[info-tech] Livescribe Pulse Smartpen

2010-08-19 Thread Bud Carruthers
The Livescribe pen is listed in our AV Co-op Catalog under Hand Held
Learning Devices: Intelligent Pen.
Catalog item# 20530, current vendor for this contract is with Livescribe
but they have a new Iowa dealer, Haddock Education Technologies.
Co-op price is $1641.71 for an Education 10 pack of the 4GB units. The
education package gives you 10 of everything included... see the catalog
description for that listing.

I know that these can be found at Target and probably other business
like them, but they do not offer the Education package ... as far as I know.

I think that I have recently seen an advertisement touting a discount
for single 4GB units at Target but I don't think the package includes
all the parts that the education package does.

I would also like feedback on this product as well as the vendor you are
purchasing it from.

Re: [info-tech] skype (or other suggestion)

2010-01-19 Thread Bud Carruthers

Jackie,

If you find something that you think really works well, please share it.

I use skype to see my grandkids and also to talk to Scott F and David
Herzog at MCP - occasionally. We found that you can show your desktop
to the other side. I have also showed video from my flip video camera
from my desktop and it works great. You can hear the videos audio and
at the same time here both sides of the skype call.

As long as you have a strong connection signal the call goes well. My
son in Monterey, Ca has a poor signal and it breaks up all the time.
The other problem is that each side has to move slowly or you get
pixillation. Good luck with this adventure.

What is your skype address?

Skype would be a definite possibility. I know that some folks have
some issues with the security and Skype's desire to use all your

to send a MacBOok with the kid and have him use iChat. Using iChat

To all,

When the AV catalog goes on line later this week, look over the surge
suppressors and battery back up devices and then tell me what you all
are wanting to purchase in the future.

There is no need for me to ask for bids for products no one is going
to purchase. Give me a list and I will add those to the Spring 2010 bid.

You might also have to tell me what vendors are selling those items,
just in case I have to contact them if they are not already a vendor
for the co-op.

Same thing goes for all of our AV Catalog ... if you have standardized
on a product or mfg for certain items it would be good to know that.

I am moving to recommending something other than APC for UPS units.
The APC units are Standby (equipment runs on line power and
quickly switches to inverter when needed) UPS. Not that I have had
any real issues with them I like the Idea of On-Line UPS better
where the UPS inverter is always supplying power to the equipment.
They are also a little happier when connected to a back-up generator
than Standby UPS units. CyberPower Online Double Conversion would
be my recommendation.

http://www.cyberpowersystems.com/products/ups-systems/ups-
selector.html

The software included allows for a single machine to connect via
USB, then it will chain to any number of servers via software. So
now if you have several servers on a single UPS all the servers can
shut down gracefully in the event of a UPS low battery.

I have a couple installed and have been very happy with them.

I did just hear about this issue and am looking into it further. Yes,
I will be offering some metal housed surge suppressors but they may
not make it into the catalog when it first goes online.

Thanks for the suggestions below. If anyone else has a favorite brand
or model as options that I should look at please let me know.

Glenwood Community School District just finished our Fire Marshall
inspection for our new high school and we were told some interesting
“technology” information. We were told that all of our current APC
surge protectors needed to be replaced with metal ones and that any
plastic ones were no longer acceptable for compliance.

Since I had no clue this was a new state regulation – I’m wondering
if anyone else knew this information. We have approximately 600 of
these we will need to replace.

I asked the Fire Marshall how we would have found out about this new

Are we the only district who didn’t have any clue about this new

Re: [info-tech] Surge Protectors

2009-09-22 Thread Bud Carruthers
I just spoke to the Fire Marshall, Ron Humphrey, about surge
protectors being used in schools.

He indicated that the regulation that is posted online was written for
health care institutions where they may be using a surge suppressor
that could get run over by a bed or crushed between two pieces of
equipment and then cause problems.

He stated that as long as your device has a UL1449 or ANSI ieeC62.4
1-1980 code on the device it is ok to use in schools.

Schools can use plastic constructed surge protectors BUT are not to be
using power strips without surge protection at all... anywhere.

I have included a link to the Fire Marshall's Surge Protection ruling
in case you wanted to read it.

Re: [info-tech] Printers

2009-08-04 Thread Bud Carruthers
Samsung placed one model of their monochome printer in several AEAs
and they all worked fine with the exception of one sent to Jerry
Cochrane. Samsung picked that one up and sent a replacement out right
away and it worked fine too.

I asked for an all-in-one printer to review, fax, scan-to-fax, scan-to-
email color printer. We got the CLX-6210FX. We had some issues with
color and with a mac driver but that has been taken care of. In the
process they actually sent us a second unit to replace the first one
with the problems. By the time it arrived we had figured out the
solution to our problems but have kept the other unit as a test unit
too. We use both of them to print, and to scan-to-email. It is really
fast and prints black fine but for color, if we are printing something
out to share we always use our old Okidata C5500. Overall the Samsung
is a lot faster printing than the Okidata. We have also found out that
when a color runs out, the printer continues printing. We now have
been running one of the printers with no magenta toner left and black
indicates that it is gone but continues to print black. Some printers
won't continue printing when the machine says there is no toner left.
I don't know if all models have this capability or not.

We have ordered and use the extended use cartridges for the Samsung.

I have just had a customer order a monochrome all-in-one and have not
gotten any feedback.

If you are only needing black print then I would not be afraid of the
Samsung printers. Samsung has taken care of any problems that we have
had and all of them, as far as I know, were experienced by me or
Jerry. Go figure that out.

Since I don't know your price range I don't know what models I should
be focusing on. Let me know if I can help.

Re: [info-tech] Best Practices LCD Projectors

2009-05-20 Thread Bud Carruthers

Lance and All,

I am wondering where you got this advice below as it does not apply to
some of the newer projectors. I will give you my interpretation on
this and will be listed in Red below

Bud

On May 20, 2009, at 1:34 PM, Lance Lennon wrote:

As we place ore and more Projectors in classrooms and IMC's for
checkout, I was wondering if there is a Best Practices for there
use. I received this from another list I am on and would love
comments, recomendations, amendments and/or overa ll changes.

Thanks

LCD Projector Best Practices:

The standard rating for a projector bulb is about 2000 hrs of use.

The AV Co-op Committee has decided that a classroom projector should
be able to show 2000 lumens of light, however the ultraclose focus
would not require that since it may only be a couple of feet from the
screen.

The replacement cost of the bulbs is about $300 each.
Replacement lamp cost will vary with the machine but can range in
price from $200 - $500, depending on the age of the machine.

Under normal
conditions the bulb should slowly get dimmer until by about 2000 hrs
it
is dim enough to need changing. They are not supposed to actually
burn

out (but sometimes they do) The life of the bulb depends on the number
of hours it runs, but also on the way it has been warmed up and cooled
down.
Under normal conditions, if a lamp is rated for 2000 hours on Bright
mode, it should last 2000 hours and then get dimmer until you need to
replace it. Some of the newer projectors have instant start and
instant off, with some keeping the fan running when turned off and
some just go off...that is the way they are built to perform.

Here is a summary recommendation for proper use:

1. If the projector is turned on, be sure it runs for at least 20
minutes before turning it back off. This insures it gets completely
up

to operating temperature and has been stable at that temperature for a
while before cooling down again.
I have never heard this before. If you turn the projector off and then
want it back on quickly, then it does take a few seconds or a minute
to get the lamp cooled off before the machine will let the lamp turn
on again. If you want it off and on for a reason, some projectors have
a shutter function that blocks the light but keeps the projector lamp
on and ready for use.

2. If the projector is turned off (put into sleep mode,
never really turn it off) then do not turn it back on for 30 minutes.
The bulb has to get completely down to room temperature before
trying to

power it back on.

No, not true. The projector will cool down and allow the lamp to turn
back on... it doesn't take but a couple of minutes to do that at the
maximum time period.

3. During the day if you are done but will use the
projector again in less than 20 minutes then leave it on but you can
press the video button to get it to the blue background. You can
then

turn it back to computer when you need it again.

Turn it off. Otherwise you are using up lamp life. It doesn't take
much time to turn it on and get going again.

4. During the day if you are done and WILL NOT be using it
for 30 to 40 minutes then please do turn it off and allow it to cool
down completely. (we have some who go to lunch and leave their
projector running)

Yes, turn it off.

5. Out in a corn field our power goes out. I asked about
power on/off problems with our electricity but was told as long as the
projector is asleep it should not be a problem, other than those times
when the power does the on/off/on/off flashing which is hard on
everything.

Power fluctuations may cause the projector to shut off. Like every
other electrical device, a power outage can cause problems and
sometimes damage. If you are concerned about that or have voltage
fluctuations in your building, without any storms, then get your
electrician in and get those spikes identified and find a solution.

You can also plug your projectors into a surge protector to help with
that ... but most don't do that. Some newer buildings may have surge
protection built-in to the outlet.

I hope that this info helps you. There are probably many ideas for
Best Practice, the one that I try to use and keep in mind is called,
 Common Sense.

Please contact me if you have questions or a difference of
opinion on my comments. An old dog can still learn some new tricks.

Re: [info-tech] Lightspeed Info is in the Spring AV Catalog

2009-05-15 Thread Bud Carruthers
The AV catalog does have some software like this offered from
Fortigate and SonicWall.

Do you know if a lot of schools in Iowa use the Lightspeed product? If
so the AV Committee might consider adding this for the Fall bid..

The lightspeed you speak of deals with classroom sound management.
Sorry for the confusion.

Re: [info-tech] projectors

2009-05-14 Thread Bud Carruthers
Yesterday, Jerry Cochrane, Craig Barnum, and I met with David Herzog
(Midwest Computer Products), Tim Laing and Michael Cho (both Epson
reps).

We all met at College Community's new building that will house 7-9th
grade students. Craig was interested in comparing the Dukane 8755H-RJ
projector(co-op price is $605.26) and the new Epson PowerLite 84 (Co-
op Price is $641.70).

Craig was also interested in seeing the 60x80 Draper wall screen
installed to view these both of these projectors.

FYI -- The Epson PowerLite 84 is the replacement for the PowerLite 822.

The Dukane 8755H-RJ and the Epson PowerLite 84 were chosen because
Craig will be networking these projectors. There were several points
that we compared on these machines:

1. The Dukane displays 2200 lumens vs the Epson's 2600 lumens.

2.	The lamp life on the Dukane is 2000/3000 hours vs the Epson's
5000/6000 hours (Yes, 5000 hour lamp life on high brightness)

3.	Both are network capable, however, the Epson has new network
software that is easy to set-up and use. You can contact anyone
present for their opinion on the software, but I thought it looked
like a very complete package that will allow you to do most anything
you want when it comes to monitoring a network ... there is even some
software available that allows your control of the projector via a
teacher's computer, if the remote control is not available.

4.	Warranty ... Dukane has a 5 year with the first year replacement
warranty vs Epson 3 year with a 3 year express replacement warranty.

5. Overview of the Projectors:

The Epson, of course, looked brighter at 2600 lumens, and from where
Craig had the ceiling mounting bracket located, the Epson filled the
60x80 screen and had some zoom adjustment both in and out ... the
Dukane slightly over-filled the screen and only had zoom adjustment to
make the image larger.

The color on both was reviewed. Maybe it was because of the extra 400
lumens but the Epson 84's colors were much better and more vibrant
than the Dukane's. The 84 also showed much whiter whites. The overall
quality of the image on the Epson was better.

The Epson PowerLite has a 10 watt speaker vs the Dukane 7 watt speaker.

New on this Epson Projector is a mini-plug microphone input, so you
could connect a teacher mic and use the projector's speaker.

The Epson PowerLite 84 also has a USB port that allows you to connect
the projector directly to a computer's USB port instead of using a VGA
cable.

The Epson 84 has filter and lamp access on the side and top so when
you ceiling mount the projector, both are readily available. The
filter is cleaned with canned air or is replaceable. The projector
will alert you with a colored light to show that the machine is
heating up and filter needs cleaned.

Here is the Epson link to their new projectors:
http://www.epsonbrighterfutures.com/products

If you look at Epson's Special Offers link http://www.epsonbrighterfutures.com/specialOffers#offer05
You will see a BUY 7 GET 1 FREE offer ... available for a limited
time period.

I received word from Craig Barnum this morning that he will be
ordering 75 or more of the Epson PowerLite 84 projectors and 60x80
Draper wall screens.

The AV Co-op also offers 17 other projectors from several
manufacturers in SVGA, XGA, and WXGA resolutions with brightness
ranging from 2000 to 3500 lumens. As Scott has pointed out the ultra
close-focus Hitachi CPA52 and EDA100 projector will shoot a 60 image
at less than 1 1/2 feet away from the screen. The catalog also has
mounting brackets for all of these projectors.

If you are in the market for any of these, please give me a call. If
you will have a large quantity order, give me a call and I will check
for better pricing.

FYI -- the Epson 400W has been upgraded to the Epson 410W. It will
still use the Epson wall arm bracket but Epson is coming out with a
new wall arm bracket that will make installation of this projector
easier than ever.

IMHO:
Currently DLP projectors have a significant lifetime savings vs LCD
projectors as DLP has no filters to clean. LCD projectors recommend
filter cleaning between 100-500 hours of use. This last shoot-out
we are seeing a trend that LCD projectors are going to a one filter
cleaning between bulb changes, and I expect that in the next year or
two LCD projectors will only require a filter clean/change
