Additionally it will cause 2012 srv errors on your Windows servers. It cannot cause stoppage of the servers but if you are scratching your head trying to figure out where these are coming from you now have the source. This is most irritating because you will spend time updating drivers, etc. and make no headway with it. Some copiers and printers now have this included with them. I recommend you shut this off! Setup the Windows firewall on your servers and block UDP port 5353 and do not let the mDNSResponder service run on Windows 7 machines.

Here is what to expect ARRA funds will be 100% competitive grants. Grants will be filled on-line. The Iowa DE current view is to keep the current E2T2 Consortia intact. E2T2 Funds may still be through the existing Consortia. (Yes I expect new schools will be allowed in, but it is too new to know how it will work now) Regardless there is a QUARTERLY reporting requirements, and complete transparency in funds usage. If part of a consortia the reporting will be done by the consortia. IMHO: I don't expect that it will be money that each district can spend as they want. The Iowa DE does not have the resources to review 360 reports four times a year. The next big question is what is next year E2T2 consortia going to look like. I can speculate it will continue with reading, but could transition to math. The funds will purchase at least 40% Professional Development, and some is going to purchase technology for the districts. As the consortia the purchases will be determined and applied to all participating districts. It could be Hardware, On-Line resource subscription, and/or software. [info-tech] So much talk about JOOMLA
All this talk about Joomla got me wondering. We have a separate INTRANET for staff we use webGUI. What are others doing for intranet? Joomla? We'd like to create a repository for classroom content and resources. Here's what I envision happening. A teacher puts together a lesson or group of resources for a lesson and saves it (any type of file - including Interactive whiteboard, html, responders, anything) They go to a website that allows them to answer a few simple questions (via dropdown) like grade, subject and type (resource, lesson plan, notebook file, etc.) Then a browse button that allows them to upload the file from their desktop to a server. The files that are on this server then populate a separate website that is categorized by grade, subject and type so teachers can lookup what other teachers around our district are doing. (no sense in recreating the wheel) We could also used this repository as a way to publish common assessments. Would this be a sharepoint thing? Is anyone doing anything like this? Thanks, Layne A. RE: [info-tech] wireless projectors
We did a pilot in Sioux City with the wireless and it was a huge disappointment. WE couldn't do both internet and projection at the same time unless we added an additional wireless card to the tablet. Even then is was patchy and you still couldn't do video- Highly disappointing results. We wire everything now and are starting to use some LCD TV's. We mounted projectors for each H.S. and M.S. teacher, and for the teachers that use them all the time from the same spot shooting at the same whiteboard, that is great. Once mounted, the mobility is obviously very limited. So, for the teachers that NEVER use their projectors they are now stuck to the ceiling. I know I could go get them down and move them somewhere else, but... Also, now every teacher K-12 will have a laptop in the next few days, and if you mount the projector and run a VGA cable somewhere in the room to connect to it, then that is where they have to connect to the projector. It limits the mobility of the laptop. So, because we are going away from desktops, I think we are going to move to a cart solution. So the teachers will have the cart with the projector in their room and connect to it with their laptops when needed. This solution also allows for sharing of equipment. I hate to see expensive equipment just hanging from the ceiling gathering dust. I see advantages both ways, but for us in many situations the non-mounted solution makes more sense. I'm getting closer to picking a Doc. Camera. I've appreciated the input I've gotten from various peeps. AverVision 300AF+ is in the top3: Fold for portability, about 4lbs., can capture up to 80 images and bright. $570 Lumens DC160 - not quite as nice, but smaller footprint and flexible arm on cam and light. $590 AverVision CP150 - haven't got my hands on this one yet - don't know the price, but it like the cam, light and flexible arm. We are going to be offering some classes for teachers on using these in your classrooms. I think the training piece is very important. We do have some old Elmo's in the District, but those are old, not very bright, and current back at Elmo as they were recalled for a fire problem. Nice!!! The nice thing about the upper end Qomo and Promaxs, they already have the video switcher built-in to the document camera, so it takes care of two boxes that you need in the classroom. As always, that would be a problem with the projector dies and then your whole system goes with it. I would enjoy hearing what you end up standardizing on, and what drew you there. I spoke with a rep from the company after looking over the website and what the assessment offers, it appears quite comprehensive and well laid out. One of the things I liked about it is the ability for schools to go together to lower the costs. There is an initial cost to set up the test of $1500 but if more than one school goes together that number can be split many ways. After the set up the cost is $5/student assessed annually. South Hamilton is looking at this assessment and we would like to know if there are other schools that might be interested and if so seeing about setting up a consortium of sorts to lower the costs. If this is something that interested you please email me off list and we can talk. RIght now I know Boone CSD is using the assessment and I am waiting to here back from them to get their thoughts. [info-tech] Inspiration and inspire data software
I have recently become aware of the incredible uses for this software in the classroom, especially as more and more teachers are using projectors and smartboards. Are there others out there using Inspiration and Inspire data? How are they using it and what kind of curriculum goals are they meeting with this technology? Here's a link to some quick overviews of their software Inspire data: http://www.inspiration.com/quicktours/index.cfm?fuseaction=inspiredata_Q T Inspiration: http://www.inspiration.com/quicktours/index.cfm?fuseaction=Insp_Quicktou r_QT Also, are there any members of this list service who have a blog or website about technology integration curriculum that they publish too or even read on a regular basis? [info-tech] Technology Proficiency of 8th graders
I would like to hear from other districts on what they are doing to assess proficiency of 8th graders with Technology for the Spring BEDS report. We collected data last year, but would like to get more accurate and actually do some hands on for computer skills in software application and Internet use. RE: [info-tech] Teacher Webpages
Scott, I think you may have sent this to me by accident. You could also tell him about SOCS - we get erate for socs and it is pretty reasonable (and we don't have to host it or do any support). One of the extensions that I have been working with is User Home Pages My best published example of an option for you can be found at www.titonka.k12.ia.us Click on the Staff link. Find Paul Heyer and click on View My Site The cool thing about this solution is that staff members don't need any special software or have to upload anything to the server to make it work. The user just needs to log into the web site and click Manage My Pages link. All editing is done through a wysiwyg editor through the web site. If you want a demo of what a teacher would see create an account on the web site 207.28.111.100 Then contact me. I will walk you through the process. Joomla is open source, and User Home Pages is free with a few restrictions (50 teachers, 5 pages each). or around $100 for the unrestricted version. Joomla runs on any web server with PHP, and MySQL. You can run it on your site on Mac, Windows, or Linux. I can also host the solution here for $20/month. Currently we are hosting 5 live sites, and have several in development stages. - Original Message - From: Karl Hehr [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: info-tech@aea8.k12.ia.us Sent: Tuesday, June 12, 2007 9:02 AM Subject: [info-tech] Teacher Webpages | What are other schools doing for teacher webpages? | I have looked at Nvu/Apple Weblogs/TeacherWeb, ideally I would have a | cheap to free solution.
