I would sure appreciate any responses to the following
questions regarding student passwords when you get a chance

1.
What is your procedure when a student forgets their
logon password? Who handles this request?
THE REQUEST WOULD BE HANDLED BY MYSELF AND THE TECHNOLOGY STAFF.

2.
Do you maintain a list of student passwords, and if so,
who do you share that list with? YES, STUDENTS ARE ASSIGNED A PASSWORD THAT IS
RECORDED. IT IS SELF GENERATED THOUGH OUR SIS SYSTEM.

3.
How often do you change student passwords? THIS IS DONE BY REQUEST ONLY.

I am just curious what other districts are doing regarding
this problem. It's not a big deal at this point in the game, but it seems
to be an issue during the first few weeks of school and of course that is when
we are bombarded by a million other things.

re: [info-tech] Mini Computer Lab

We have been using a portable lab K-5 for the last 5 years. It really
works well as we have someone responsible for the lab and makes sure that
they are taken care of. We also have portable labs that have been
dismantled due to lack of supervision. As for the computers in the room,
that depends on the teachers. I found very few used them other than when
they did centers, so they just sat in the room. We ended up pulling all of
them out and now use just the portable lab. If you have any questions let

Would like to know your feelings on switching from a computer lab to mobile
labs in a K-5 setting. I really have mixed feelings and wanted to get more
ideas from the group. We currently have a lab of 24 desktops, we would
take and put 3 in each section 3-5 in their classroom from the computer

Everyone-

I
have a few questions I would like to pose to the group for input.

1
- At what grade do you start giving students Internet access? Our
elementaries would like to not have to log in to computers as
"special" internet accounts, they just want the Internet to work
for them. Our current practice would require someone to log the computer
in with an account that would have Internet access. I assume that
whatever your situation is, you expect the teacher to still supervise their
use.

2
- At what grade do you start giving kids their own personal login, with a
home directory and internet access. We are doing home directories at 5th
grade, and Internet access at 7th grade.

3
- Facebook. We have 3 interested groups ready and wanting to create
a Facebook group or a Facebook Page for their specific group. We have
talked about privacy, and what kids post about themselves there and how we as
District
employees are mandatory reporters. From my limited playing of Facebook, I
cannot limit access to specific facebook site, it is either give them (staff
only, not students) access to Facebook or not. All or none. Their
thinking in wanting to create a Facebook page is because that is what the kids

Just an FYI:

I have moved my Intermapper system to our server room to ensure
continued monitoring in the event of a power outage in Fort Dodge. With

Intermapper Web server.

In an effort to bring all technical resources together to one spot I

Subject: Re: [info-tech] Technology Associate

I don't have an associate per-se she is hired as a secretary. She is
half time and she helps with a variety of things. There is not a hard
and fast job description, but she helps with Web updates, Project
EASIER, Student password resets, she does a little front-line trouble
shooting (like is it plugged in), she does a lot with JMC, creates
documents and reports for me and proofs things that I need to send
out. Actually without her I would never be able to twitter or check
facebook during the day ;) This is my second here with a person in
this capacity and she was hired to help when I took on curriculum
duties so she does help a lot with those as well. Lance if you need
anything more formal just drop me a note.

No, but we post it on our school website. We looked into doing it that instead

give it to everyone in the district. It would have cost us more to mail to

I thought the problem with schoolalerts is they don't work with/
report to the news media . . . ? So you still have to make all
those calls, too. (Unless they've changed recently.) I just looked
into what Sarah sent out. Do they then send your info on to the news
(radio, TV)? It appears that way on their home page. Also a free
server?

Currently we call local radio and TV stations and I put it on the web
page. From KCCI and WHO patrons could sign up for e-mail alerts as
well and get them when we call. I am hesitant to use JMC and send
out a mass message . . . primarily because I would have to get out
of bed and drive to the closest building to do it. (But we do use it
for lunch, reminders of early outs and other information). Are most
moving towards the "alert" system format that does texts and e-mail,
or still with the radio/TV.

I also sat in on a webinar last year for a school alert service (fee
based)--I think $1-$2/student. Not sure if that would be worth the $
or not . . . esp. when I think there are other initiatives I would
like to use any funds that are available for.

Some of the hoops,

Do the teachers want this? It's like buying a dress for
your wife and she's not with you. We have about 1/3 of our books on the
tablets, but most of the teachers are still using the books. Some of the ebooks
use an earlier version of Acrobat, which causes problems when we standardized
with version 8. (These publishers -vendors- insist that we use a CD in
every machine. Some vendors will push an web-base textbook, but if the student
lacks connections at home, then there's another problem.

Price- it's really not cheaper than books, I don't
have the numbers at hand. Currently software is still off the Silo tax list.

When I shared direction of the 1:1 with the listserv, one of the
questions was, "are you going to buy them a car as well?"
Looking back, the car idea would have been better.

We have 170 students with
laptops, plus the staff. Teaching Special Education full-time, I try to focus
on Network issues, we have a tech(paid at the level of an aide) that deal
only with the desktop and repair. Yes, this will be quite an undertaking.

I'm sure I have more,
but Monday morning beckons,

When printing in Safari select print and then change the third dropdown
box(Copies & Pages) to Safari and on that page you have a check box that says
"Print webpage information in headers and footers"

Is is possible to alter or turn off the header and footer that prints when you

I can't find a place to do that on the Mac. Do different browsers help?

Re: [info-tech] Today's tech meeting

2007-04-20 Thread Keith Stoeber
Murry,

Here is Lightspeeds Requirements

Single Pentium 4 Processor (2.4 ghz+) for networks running up to 10 Mbps of
traffic or Dual Pentium 4 processor (2.4ghz+) for networks running over 10 Mbps
of traffic.

4 GB RAM Recommended - 2.0 GB RAM minimum (supported for legacy servers; will
require SQL Server tuning adjustments - see Q10378)

8 GB recommended contiguous disk-storage (single disk - available space) - 4 GB
minimum (will limit report storage and performance)

This is what we are using and it runs well.

[info-tech] Computer Labs

2003-09-29 Thread Keith Stoeber
I would like to get some feedback on what schools are doing to monitor computer labs.
Do you use a person or software? What procedures do you have in a open lab as
students leaving a classroom?

Thanks

[info-tech] Questions on staff computers

2003-06-10 Thread Keith Stoeber
Our school district is installing new computers for the staff. I would like to know
how other schools handle this. We have discussed policies and if we should allow
teachers to install software. Give me some input as to what your school district
does.

Thanks
