RE: [info-tech] Quick Survey - Student Accounts

2010-10-07 Thread Mitch Mueller
1. What is your procedure when a student forgets their logon password?
Who handles this request?
I handle the password resets. If a student forgets they come see me in my
office. Or leave me a note.

2. Do you maintain a list of student passwords, and if so, who do you
share that list with?
Just with a list of passwords is all.

3. How often do you change student passwords?

Once a year.

I would sure appreciate any responses to the following questions regarding
student passwords when you get a chance

1. What is your procedure when a student forgets their logon password?
Who handles this request?

2. Do you maintain a list of student passwords, and if so, who do you
share that list with?

3. How often do you change student passwords?

I am just curious what other districts are doing regarding this problem.
It's not a big deal at this point in the game, but it seems to be an issue
during the first few weeks of school and of course that is when we are
bombarded by a million other things.

Sorry guys I didn't realize that I didn't put my message in here so we go.
I have a portable hard-drive that we couldn't get to work with the usb cable
so instead, I decided to take it apart, hook it up to my hard-drive usb to
IDE/Sata converter and still nothing happened. Download a few different
programs that are suppose to work at reading unreadable hard-drives. Does
anyone have any suggestions on how I could get this drive to work. It has
the teachers whole school life on it and I don't want to be the one to give

I would guess it depends on your wireless goals. If you just need to supply
a handful of devices connectivity it is not too much of an issue to install

ensure sufficient bandwidth for many devices grouped together such as a
1-to-1 then working with an experienced installer may save you time and
money.

There are a few vendors such as Xirrus that include installation, and
guarantee coverage as part of the equipment costs.

Anyone out there do your own (no vendor) wireless for your district? Is this
dangerous from a support perspective? I was thinking of either HP/3COM or
Aruba. Doesn't seem to be really that much cheaper. Input on this would
help.

Scott,

Most of the damage has been done already. I have stopped what I could from
going out. If other shools received any of these emails and had a user click
the link, they also will be sending out thousands of these messages. Mitch,
for instance, says Emmetsberg has had a dozen or so
click the link. It also forwards all incoming email to affected addresses to

abuse.

Cheap

Fast

Good

Pick two of the above.

Cheap and good would be blocking everything but your own equipment from
accessing the wireless network by MAC address or other means.

Cheap and fast would be running something like openDNS and using their
filtering.

Fast and Good would be installing a content filtering Firewall.

You get the idea.

Well this was my first MS Settlement meeting and from what I have learned
from attending and what our tech director has told me, it seems like they
wants us to jump through rings of fire and run through a cage of lions, and
we just might get that money. Seems like they are hoping we would just give
up on it and then they get to keep it. Not knowing who the they are that
would get the money but someone is hoping that.

Just made a phone call (u of I testing) , we (I) can climb down from the

ITED's ($2.50 per student per test), so it would be $5.00 a year per student
(20 dollars over the length of the grant).

Now back to grumbling about the white stuff in the air.

The meeting they had at the AEA on Wednesday said nothing new, we had
already received all of that information from previous ICN meetings.

IEOC does not have a 21st Century Test:
http://www.education.uiowa.edu/itp/ieoc/Default.aspx

Remember, on the IEOC, you have to pretest at the beginning of the
course, and then again at the end of the course. I have not yet found
out where to see where the costs are, and if you get the pre and post
for that one cost.

Tim Buenz has started filling out his grant request for one of his
buildings. A few of us are getting together March 4th at Webster City
for a couple of things, 1) to check out his new server architecture with
virtual servers and a storage network, and also to check out the new
features of Lightspeed and their new MyBigCampus social network and 2)
work on our Microsoft filling, or at least talk about what Tim has done,
look through the process, and maybe start heading in the right
direction. We may generate other questions that we will look to the
AEA, John O'Connell or other AEAs out there. We will start there at
9:30.

So, you can attend there to start with this, although it will only leave
two months to complete the process.

Have a great weekend!!!

1) What is IEOC assessment tool? If it the end of course tests that I

2) Can we get this as a topic of an upcoming meeting, as I know we are

We allow Skype only but that is because our principals use it. But we have
allowed I.M. before and only have a few students use it and used it a little
bit.

Just wondering for those who have lightspeed. It isn't catching all of our

Everyone-

I have a few questions I would like to pose to the group for
input.

1 - At what grade do you start giving students Internet
access? Our elementaries would like to not have to log in to computers
as special internet accounts, they just want the Internet to work for
them. Our current practice would require someone to log the computer in
with an account that would have Internet access. I assume that whatever
your situation is, you expect the teacher to still supervise their use.

2 - At what grade do you start giving kids their own
personal login, with a home directory and internet access. We are doing
home directories at 5th grade, and Internet access at 7th grade.

3 - Facebook. We have 3 interested groups ready and wanting
to create a Facebook group or a Facebook Page for their specific group.
We have talked about privacy, and what kids post about themselves there
and how we as District employees are mandatory reporters. From my
limited playing of Facebook, I cannot limit access to specific facebook
site, it is either give them (staff only, not students) access to
Facebook or not. All or none. Their thinking in wanting to create a
Facebook page is because that is what the kids are doing, when they
aren't at school. My concern is the privacy and lost work time with
people maintaining their personal Facebook, Mafia War or Farm Town
creation. Give me your thought, the discussions you have had, and we
can kind of go from there.

Thanks for your time and help.

Jeremy

RE: [info-tech] iPad pro/con

2010-02-02 Thread Mitch Mueller
Now that I have finally read about this iPad, I'm going to put in the my two
cents. I don't think it would be the greatest thing to replace 1:1 laptops
because like Tim said, it just won't do all the big things like editing
videos or doing CAD. I do think that it would make a great tool for putting
all the text books on and stuff like that but it won't do everything that a
laptop will. Also we have found a piece of equipment similar to the iPad
with a detachable keyboard, it's the Touch Book from Always Innovating. I'm
sure you have seen it but it looks much more intriguing to me. Only because
it doesn't run Mac software ( I don't like Apple, sorry you Mac fans).

Scott - Makes since I agree with you but how do you ensure that students do
not bring in undesirable things like porn on their tablets? What does this
do to CIPA compliancy? Since students today are growing up in a media rich
environment perhaps it is time to look at how restrictive we are and if it
is really important to nail systems down tight to protect kids from
experiencing some aspects of life @ school. When they walk out the school
doors they are unprotected.

Sorry for the delay in my post.

I do think in concept the iPad is a potential Tool that could be used in a
1-to-1. Would it replace a 1-to-1 Laptop project? If you are going to be
having students doing things like video editing I don't see it.

But thinking Outside the box in concept I see that it could be a lower
cost alternative to a laptop project.

Used in conjunction to Moodle, or similar web based solution the Pad could
be used to work in the class electronically. The pad could be used in a
Moodle course to view/review content, take quiz/tests, and participate in
Chat/Forums. This would become more of a pen/paper replacement than a
Computer for the class.

With electronic rights to Textbooks the students would only have to take
home 1 device weighing less than 2 pounds instead of a backpack full of
textbooks.

But it does not have., Is it that big of a deal, Just don't think of it
as a Computer or Laptop, but a whole new class of device.

As a Palm Owner since the original units were released I saw it as a great
technology. A device to supplement the computer, allowing me to take the
computer data I use the most with me on a small handheld. It was never
designed to Replace the computer, and I think that was the secret to its
success. Although the Palm is on the verge of extinction I still see the
concept as a good one. The Pad type of device I see as a similar
technology. Not a computer replacement, but a supplement. With technology
moving to The Cloud I guess I don't see a big deal with the lack of
USB/SD/Firewire or other jacks, plugs, or holes in the device. I would
think with no moving parts, maintenance should be minimal compared to a
laptop. The cost also would/could allow you to purchase 2-3 Pads to one
Laptop.

Of course the bad news is that a district would probably still have to
maintain traditional computers for higher end processing such as Video/Photo
editing, CAD, and such.

I guess what I am saying is don't look at this as a traditional computer,
but as a new different kind of tool, then think about the problems it could
solve.

Kurt,

Yes, I actually agree with you that this is probably not a good 1:1 device,
at least not if you expect students to really be able to create and produce.
I feel the same way about netbooks. They have a place, and are useful for
certain things, but if I'm going to base a full-time take-home 1:1 program
around a device, it would be a real fully-functional laptop. I can see some
educational uses of the iPad (or a netbook, or an iPod touch, or...), but
I'm thinking of certain specific applications, not as general purpose
machines.

My feeling is that its main benefit is to push technology in a certain
direction that might really develop into something. I mean, remember the
Apple Newton? It didn't amount to much on its own

Ok, it works fine with server 2008 under TS, but it can be flaky with 2003.
It won't work with Firefox in TS (if you are using renaissance place).
Everyone must have admin rights to the installation, if I remember
correctly, if you are loading it locally.

[info-tech] Dual Link SonicWall

2009-11-25 Thread Mitch Mueller
For those of you who have two internet links coming to your district using
the sonicwall, could you give me some help. We have a connection coming
from the ICN(AEA) and also one coming from our local provider, Iowa Telecom.
But when I enable the Iowa Telecom link, the community users with Iowa
Telecom as their provider can no long get to our school site. We think it
maybe a mis-configured sonicwall but I do not know where to start looking.
Any help would be great.

Had the same issue at EG.

All the local users of Iowa Telcom are on the same subnet. Your Sonicwall
is receiving web traffic on your ICN port and the Sonicwall is seeing all
of the Iowa Telcom users as local addresses trying to access through the
wrong port. This is a classic IP Spoof and you can create NO rules to
circumvent it.

Solution, put a NAT device between your Iowa Telcom router/modem and your
sonicwall.

Make sure to restart the Sonicwall after making the change so that it can
make the correct adjustments also.

That was my fix.

[info-tech] Terminal Services help

2009-11-19 Thread Mitch Mueller
If anyone out there uses terminal services, I'm hoping you can help me. We
are unable to set a default printer on our terminal server, which is keeping
our students from printing off of adobe reader. Can anyone give me a
suggestion, a script that I can put in group policy or something.

Techs,

I've been blissfully retired for 2.5 years and have missed most of
the conversation and debate associated with 1:1. When called back about a
month ago, our district was already committed to 1:1. During the past month,
I have reviewed some of the information associated with this commitment. As
a classroom teacher, I would have loved to use the immediate feed-back and
evaluation that is possible with 1:1. There are many other positives. But I
see one possible negative. From the comments that I have heard during the
last couple of days, it sounds like most let the kids take the units home.
How about the kids with no internet access at home? At first blush, it looks
like this creates an even larger uneven playing field for the disadvantaged.
Is this a problem and if so, how has it been addressed by those already
involved with 1:1? I'm concerned about this and definitely need some help
with this one.

George

PS: I have to respond to emails at night at home because I haven't taken
the time to create a school email address (don't plan to stick around that
much longer) and we block hotmail at school!! What a world we live in!!

PSS: Several schools have called and asked if they could attend the meeting
tomorrow at 10 AM (PM for Lance) Anyone's welcome!! I really need help in
getting up to speed on this 1:1. I really appreciate Scott and Jason taking
the time and will share their expertise with everyone.

Going to agree with TIm on this.

1) We did a survey of our students before the roll out and found out that
96% of our students had internet at home, now some of those are just dial-up
but not many.

2) Also we spoke with the public libraries in the communities that make up
our district and made sure they had wireless there (all did , but we planned
on putting a wireless router into the buildings if they did not).

3) At the roll outs we also had a variety of local ISPs here to meet with
families in case they wanted to upgrade or change their current internet
status at home.

4) Lastly we made sure that the wireless was powerful enough to work in the
student parking lot.

Two thoughts on the home internet thing:

First, that's something you want to look at in the planning stages of a 1:1,
because the percentage of homes with internet access (or even high speed
internet) can affect how the 1:1 is implemented. One of the reasons for a
1:1 is to take learning outside the classroom and outside the school day,
and that can't happen if lots of your students can't access the internet at
home.

Second, if you find that a good portion of your students' homes don't have
internet access, the school may want to partner with a local internet
provider to help remedy that situation. At our rollout, representatives
from our local ISP set up a booth and offered a deal on high speed internet
for new customers. Many people took advantage of that deal. Right now we
have very few students without access.

Mitch,
It sounds like a possible driver issue. XP came out back in 2001, before
SATA and solid state drives. Maybe you just need mass storage drivers for
your netbook and press F6 on boot from the CD. If the CD worked even a
little bit, it sounds like you have a work ext. CD-ROM that you can boot
from. If you get a screen where it finds no hard drive, it is a driver
issue.

Mitch,
Maybe you can find some good info here:
http://www.liliputing.com/2008/04/install-windows-xp-on-mini-note-usb.html

This is how you can install XP from a Flash drive. Use this as a template,
since it looks to be a different netbook than yours. Good Luck.

Trying now to use the USB CD drive. Was told to turn off Native Mode with
the SATA drive. Seeing if that helps. I can't seem to get anywhere at all
with any installation. It will get to the Setup is loading file (Windows
Executive)... and stops right there. Tried different CD's of XP and still
no luck. Can't seem to get a USB Flash Drive install to work either. Don't
know many more details I can get you. Just anything I try doesn't work.
Dang just going to have to hit it really hard and hope.

Mitch,
It sounds like a possible driver issue. XP came out back in 2001, before
SATA and solid state drives. Maybe you just need mass storage drivers
for
your netbook and press F6 on boot from the CD. If the CD worked even a
little bit, it sounds like you have a work ext. CD-ROM that you can boot
from. If you get a screen where it finds no hard drive, it is a driver
issue.

using Google Apps. I attended a Webinar yesterday about it and watch a

To all,

When the AV catalog goes on line later this week, look over the surge
suppressors and battery back up devices and then tell me what you all are
wanting to purchase in the future.

There is no need for me to ask for bids for products no one is going to
purchase. Give me a list and I will add those to the Spring 2010 bid.

You might also have to tell me what vendors are selling those items, just in
case I have to contact them if they are not already a vendor for the co-op.

Same thing goes for all of our AV Catalog ... if you have standardized on a
product or mfg for certain items it would be good to know that.

I am moving to recommending something other than APC for UPS units. The APC
units are Standby (equipment runs on line power and quickly switches to
inverter when needed) UPS. Not that I have had any real issues with them I
like the Idea of On-Line UPS better where the UPS inverter is always
supplying power to the equipment. They are also a little happier when
connected to a back-up generator than Standby UPS units. CyberPower Online
Double Conversion would be my recommendation.

The software included allows for a single machine to connect via USB, then
it will chain to any number of servers via software. So now if you have
several servers on a single UPS all the servers can shut down gracefully in
the event of a UPS low battery.

I have a couple installed and have been very happy with them.
