Re: [JAWS-Users] laptops and OS
Thank you all for your very hehlpful replies re a laptop and Windows 7. I'll know later this week what the school uses, and that will determine what I will look for. One reason why I think I have to give up my much-loved Word-2003 is that Microsoft has or is soon stopping support for it as they move forward. I don't want to be a dinosaur. . So, what about 64-bit versus 32-bit? I know Jaws now supports 64-bit. Can a 64-bit PC or laptop run 32-bit software, or is that how it works? Not sure about that stuff either. - Original Message - From: "Steve" To: Sent: Sunday, March 28, 2010 6:45 PM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] laptops and OS Jean, Well, first, any laptop will work. You can always shop for it on the internet if you are comfortable with its keyboard layout. Dells are quite reliable. The problem with laptops is they aren't as rugged, and yes, there could have been a lemon. Re: [JAWS-Users] laptops and OS
Good afternoon. I've got several for you, as I am a single mom, and full-time student who has recently been in your shoes. First, you are correct, Windows 7 is pretty much the standard, and while there may be a small learning curve, particularly if you're still comfy with XP, it works magnificently. There are new features that make it much more intuitive, and faster. Secondly, a spacious keyboard is a must. Touch them before buying. Make sure your hands are comfortable and have room to breathe so to speak. Some laptops have this tiny little mouse thingy right in the center of the keyboard, usually around the g and h keys. I have found this to be a terrible thing indeed, because one bumps it inadvertently, and it tends to wreak much havoc on my work, I mean one's work. Office 2007 will soon be replaced by office 2010, and while different, is, like Windows 7, intuitive, and learnable if you give yourself the patience and time to do it without pressure. The biggest thing I can say is that if you're starting school in the fall, give yourself a good 6 weeks to play with the laptop before school starts. That way, by the time you have your first class, you and your laptop are already best friends. I would be glad to answer any spacific questions you may have, on or off list, so please feel free to write. Another possibility to consider is if you were trying to get JAWS to not speak a greater than sign in the dictionary manager, if you accidentally didn't press the shift key with the period for the greater than sign then you might have told JAWS not to speak the period. I have listed steps below for how to check the first possible scenario, and a second set of steps shown below is for how to check in the dictionary manager. CHECKING HOW PUNCTUATION MODE IS BEING CONTROLLED 1.Use JAWS key with F2 to bring up the list of JAWS managers. 2.Press the letter "c" until the configuration manager choice is in focus and press enter key. 3.When the configuration manager appears use CTRL+shift+D to bring up the default configuration manager. 4.When the default configuration manager window is in focus then use Alt+S to bring up the settings menu. 5.Use down arrow key to the "text processing" menu choice and press enter key. 6.When the dialog box appears then use tab key to move to the "punctuation mode" box. If the setting is on "synthesizer" then use up or down arrow key to choose "JAWS." 7.Use tab key to the OK button and press enter key or spacebar. 8.Use CTRL+S to save changes and then Alt+f4 to close the default configuration manager. 9.If the problem is only happening in one application then when working in that application bring up the configuration manager as shown above but ignore step 3. CHECKING THE DICTIONARY MANAGER 1.Use JAWS key with D to bring up the JAWS dictionary file. If you start in an application that hasn't had a dictionary file created for it then you might get the "new dictionary" dialog. If that happens then tab to OK and press enter key. 2. When the dictionary file is open then use shift+CTRL+D to load the default dictionary file. 3. Use tab key to move to a tree view containing a list of actual words and replacement words. 4. Use down arrow key through the list to check if there is any entry for the period mark. If there is then use tab key to the change button and press enter key or spacebar. In the resulting dialog box type a period mark in the actual word edit box and then tab to the replacement word edit box and type in a period mark. Tab to OK and press enter key, and then use CTRL+S to save changes and Alt+f4 to close the dictionary manager. 5. If it is only in a specific application such as your Email program where you are not hearing the period spoken, open the dictionary manager using JAWS key with the letter "D" while focus is in your Email program. In this case do not load the default dictionary manager. 6. Follow steps 3 and 4 shown above in this set of steps. I hope you get the period being spoken again. Take care. Re: [JAWS-Users] keyboard manager question
Here is something else I have discovered. Now JAWS is reading the period in all applications when I read one line At a time or use the say all command. It is only as I type a period That JAWS is silent. I just finished typing a . and JAWS was silent, However I typed a , and JAWS said comma. Does that help anyway. Michell, Send Space is a web site from which you can send larger files, those which are normally too large for your e-mail program to accept. Most, if not all e-mail services, have a size limit which would prevent you from sending an attachment which was larger than their maximum allowed limit. On Send Space, you can place a link which contains the information you're trying to send and which can then be retrieved by the person you intended to have the information. I hope that makes sense. There are several internet web sites which provide that kind of service. Re: [JAWS-Users] keyboard manager question
Hi Victoria; In all the Jaws versions that I have installed, in Verboscity / Jaws Options, I have punctuation set at, " some ". In the Configuration Manager / Customize Punctuation I have the punctuation marks exclaim, quote, apostrophy, left & right paran, comma, dash, period, colon, semicolon, less, greater, question, left & right bracket, backslash, underline, all set to " most ", and ellipses set to all. You can't eliminate all punctuation from being spoken / recognized because of the way the authors of webpages & any other print sources are designed / written / formatted. I couldn't list all my customize punctuation settings because it would take too long but, once you start playing with the settings you will see how Jaws reacts and then better understand how the settings work. Re: [JAWS-Users] keyboard manager question
Hello Doug, If the verbosity for punctuation is set to "most", and the level for period in the customize punctuation dialog in the configuration manager is also set to "most", you should be hearing the period spoken. There are a couple other possibilities that you might check. First of all, if you are using the Eloquence synthesizer with JAWS default settings then check in the text processing dialog box in the configuration manager to see if JAWS is controlling the punctuation mode. Take care. Re: [JAWS-Users] DVD issue!
The problem you are faceing is the DRM copy protection. Microsoft has been over zealous in enforcing this DVD! They require that no other video drivers are installed on your computer that might be attempting to copy the video. Unforrtunately, they do not distinguish between these pirate programs and the Freedom Scientific Video Mirror driver. In effect, they are accusing all JAWS users of being pirates! This could get serious if the International treaty to prevent counterfeiting gets enacted. The current leaked proposal states that if anybody is reported to be performing acts of piracy 3 times, like illegal downloads, will be banned from the Internet for life! This is not a conviction from a court, just a letter from your ISP, or other accusation could be enough. Try using another media player, such as VLC Media Player or WinAmp. Hi Chris So is this ok in your opinion? I have always used Nod32 and never had a bit of trouble and would fully reccomend it over all other programs. this laptop is on its last days and my nod subscription is about to run out and this is why I am trying MSE. when running Nod under system info I have approx 590 mb physical memory free I notice with MSE it is down to 489 mbm and Super anti spyware is even heavier. Re: [JAWS-Users] A Windows Live Mail thing I have notice with Jaws.
Thanks, I will try this when Forms Mode is not acting correctly. FS does not seem too motivated to fix the modified Outlook Express scriptts to work with Windows Live Mail. I guess they bow to corporations and government agencies using Outlook. I should just install Thunderbird, load the user created scripts, and forget this fiasco! I have not used any other email clients as I started learning email quite late. Well I knew how to do it at school but at that time I didn't have internet at home. lol But alittle tip for those who have the issue about jaws not entering into a message. When that does happen what you can do is hold your jaws key down and press the letter Z that's Z for zebra! Jaws will say "use vertural pc curser off" note I have not tryed this with out being in the body of the message so I don't know if it works when say tabing from the subject line to the message. But as I was saying do that command if you can't type in the body of that message and you should be able to type with out any problem! Note very important! when you have sent your message remember to turn the virtual curser back on! Because if you go to a message to read it and hit enter on that message and say you want to arrow around well you will get no feedback until you have turned it back on. I'll admit when I 1st started using windows live mail and incounted this issue I was really stuck and had to do alot of shift tabing and tabing to finally get into the message to type away. And it could be a long process or a short one. and just by chance I pulled this keystroke from memory and it hasn't let me down yet! The reason I am writing about this is because it might happen to someone else and if they was like me and completly stump and didn't have a clue what to do well I hope this keystroke will come in handy for all you people! I know it did for me! If any one has got any more tips for windows live mail then I would love to hear them! I mean that's what part of life is isn't it? For people to help each other! Many Thanks. I think Google is doing something funky with the main page! The USA site does the same thing. I have been pressing F5, then Insert + Escape. This only works part of the time. I will try your tip. Re: [JAWS-Users] keyboard manager question
Hi Victoria & Doug; Settings in Verboscity & Customize Punctuations are read by JAWS opposite ways. In Verboscity settings, if the punctuation is set to " most ", JAWS is told to " RECOGNIZE " most punctuation. In Customize Punctuation, JAWS is told the direct opposite, JAWS is told to ignore the individual punctuation marks depending on your settings choice. For example; With punctuation set at " most " in Verboscity/JAWS Options, JAWS will read " most " but, not all question marks, periods, commas, and so on. This setting covers all punctuation marks. Now, in Customize Punctuation in the configuration manager; If you have the period, question mark, comma, & exclamationmark set to " all ", Jaws is told here to ignore all of these punctuation marks. If these same punctuation marks settings were set at " some ", JAWS would " ignore " only some of them and therefore since JAWS is told to ignore only " some " Jaws would read some of them but, not all of them. If I have misstated something in my explanation, Please Brian or David jump in and set me straight! I surely don't want to mislead anyone on this issue. Hope this helps. Take care. Any other suggestions Doug -Original Message- From: jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Brian Lee Sent: Saturday, March 27, 2010 11:13 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] keyboard manager question Hello Doug, If your punctuation level in verbosity is set to "most" then the level for announcing the period should be set to "most", "some" or "none" in the "customize punctuation" dialog box. 1.Press JAWS key with V to bring up the verbosity dialog box. 2.Press the letter "p" until you find the punctuation choice. 3.It is likely set to the most choice and if so just escape out-of-the dialog box. 4.Use JAWS key with F2 to bring up the list of JAWS managers. 5.Press the letter "C" until you find the choice for the configuration manager and press enter key. 6.Press CTRL+shift+D to load the default configuration manager. 7.Use Alt+S to go into the settings menu. 8.Use down arrow key until you find the choice for customizing punctuation and press enter key. 9.Press a period key to move focus to that punctuation mark. If it is set to the "all" choice then you won't hear it announced when punctuation in verbosity is set to the "most" choice. Press spacebar until something other than the "all" level is chosen. The level for the punctuation in the custom punctuation settings should be the same or lower than what is chosen in the verbosity. If it is set to "all" and the verbosity level for punctuation is "most" then you won't hear it spoken. 10. Use tab key to the OK button and press enter key or spacebar. 11. Use CTRL+S to save changes and Alt+f4 to close the configuration manager. Take care. [JAWS-Users] Forms mode in google.co.uk
Hi Sometimes when I open up google.co.uk - which is my homepage and JAWS 11 goes into forms mode in the search edit box, the text I type doesn't get entered into the edit box. If I exit the edit box and return I get the same behaviour; no text. As I type, if I attempt to backspace I just get blank repeated over and over. I have to reload the page to be able to enter text. So, not exactly the end of the world I know, but I find I have to check to see if I am entering text every time I use google which is a little irritating. Any ideas; oh, I have repaired my installation of JAWS 11 to no effect. Re: [JAWS-Users] keyboard manager question
Thanks Brian Lee! I really appreciate your instructions! I do so hate hearing that darned "Period Period Period. Vicky - Original Message - From: "Brian Lee" To: Sent: Saturday, March 27, 2010 11:51 PM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] keyboard manager question Hello Vicky, If you set your punctuation verbosity to "most" and change a specific punctuation level to "all" in the customize punctuation dialog box in the configuration manager, the specific punctuation should not be announced any more. 1. Use JAWS key with V to bring up the verbosity dialog box and press the letter "p" until the punctuation choice is in focus. 2. If the punctuation is set to "most" then just escape out-of-the box. If it is set to "all" then use spacebar to change the level. 3. Use insert+f2 to bring up a list of JAWS managers, press C until the configuration manager is chosen and press enter key. 4. Use CTRL+shift+D to bring up the default configuration manager. 5. Use Alt+S to go into the settings menu, use down arrow key to the "customize punctuation" choice and press enter key. 6. A list of punctuation marks will come into view. Press a period (key by the comma) to move to the period choice and use spacebar to change the level to "all" if it is not at that setting already. 7. Use the end key to move to the ellipsis choice and press spacebar to set it to the "all" choice. 8. Use tab key to the OK button and use spacebar. 9. Use CTRL+S to save changes and close the configuration manager using Alt+f4. Microsoft Word actually changes the three periods in a row to the ellipsis symbol. Editors sometimes require three dots with spaces between them or if an entire sentence is left out they want four dots separated with spaces after the first one. This can cause a problem if the dots are at the end of a line as the Word ellipsis won't break over lines. This problem is usually resolved by changing the auto correct function for the ellipsis, by creating auto text or by using a macro assigned to a hotkey. It usually also involves the use of non breaking spaces between the dots. If the ellipses that you are hearing have not been changed into the ellipsis symbol by the book authors or editors then you might need to change the level of announcement of the period as well as the level for the ellipsis. Take care.
