Thanks for the responses about the pushrod tubes - since I have both already,
I’ll start with the accordion style and see how they do.

What should I be shooting for as far as propellor orientation to the
crankshaft? My crankshaft/prop hub don’t have any kind of indexing marks, so I
have nothing to go off of. Anyone have information to share on that?

Gonna try to start assembling the gears onto the crankshaft tomorrow…

You really do not want to over insure. I will give an example. My neighbor
built an RV7 and insured it for $126000. after her 6 attempt at landing WITH
the wind she flipped it over on its back.  She told the insurance company she
did not want it fixed, They told here it would cost $4 to fix it. She sued
and lost to the insurance company, it paid to fix it. She bought an RV10 and
when they finished here 7 she sold it. It only sold for $78000 which was the
value of the plane. The ins. company pays on insured value not book value. A
friend wrecked to planes and the ins. company paid both without to many
question but now he fly's with only liability because that is all he can get.
You will fined That if you wreck a plane and ins. pays it off most company will
tell you they will not insure you, you will need to go back to the 1 that paid
the claim. They will sometimes insure you again only because they would like to
get some off there money back.

Ask your underwriter what they will pay if the aircraft is
"totaled".  I read years ago that they pay based on aircraft value,
not on the insured amount.  Given that, I don't recall ever seeing a
KR sell for $17,000, even the very nice ones with 0-200 engines.  A
nice KR with a VW engine, if you can find a buyer, is probably in the
$10,000 to $12,000 range.  You may be over insuring and paying more
than necessary.  I insure for liability only for $325 per year, given
my commercial license, 1500+ total time, and 600+ tail wheel time.

Given my age, 72, and the 13 years I took to build my KR, if I total
mine I could have another one flying by age 85.  :-)  Live to you
comfort level..

Some insurance companies only pay 80% on hull value.  For years I only had

for the KR.  I have less hours in the KR.  I insured my Mooney for more than it
was worth so if I had to file a claim I would get full value back.

Buy liability insurance then, set up an escrow account tagged KR airplane.  Put
the extra money you was going to pay on insurance in that account and if you

Another reason not to carry full hull insurance is that if you ever DO
file a claim, you've just marked yourself as somebody who doesn't
hesitate to file a claim, and insurance companies immediately shy away
from such "risks".  Your rates will almost certainly climb
significantly, and you may even become uninsurable!

Also, if you think like I do, if you ever tear your airplane up, you'd
much rather have all the left over parts to build another one than for
the insurance company to haul them all away so you get to start "from
scratch" to build your next one...

My prop is at 3 and 9 on the Lancair which makes it a little harder to hand
prop.  I talked to  a guy at Hartzell who said that props were put at 2 an 8

start.  I also talked with an RV owner who also said he did the same as me.  I
also did my KR but didn't see much difference.  The VW is a very smooth engine
anyway.  I left the Mooney at the factory setting which, is not a good location

I meant to ask how that lined up the prop for hand propping. Did it

Subject: KR> Airworthiness Certificate cancelled or surrendered

I recently saw a KR for sale that was "almost ready to fly".? After
looking at it I looked up the tail number and the plane has been
"deregistered", as well as the Airworthiness Certificate.? I've always
thought that a deregistered aircraft was "dead in the water" but
according to something I found on the web, there is apparently a path
back IF the Airworthiness Certificate hasn't been "surrendered".? I
needed clarification on this, and others may need it also.? I'm too lazy
to look up the official regulation on this, but I'm sure it's not too
hard to find.? From a thread on Vans Aircraft:

"Has the original airworthiness been surrendered? If so, the aircraft is
"dead in the water".
Once the airworthiness certificate for an experimental amateur-built
aircraft has been surrendered, there is no path back.
If the airworthiness is still valid, then no problem. It can be put back
into service by going through a new phase I test program.
No one but the original builder is eligible for the repairman certificate."

Just FYI...

I used Princeton Probes, capacitance senders for the wing tanks I built for

On my Panther, I am using the same float senders at the low point in the
tank, just like is used in all the RVs.? I don't care so much that they are
accurate at full to half full, but when that float starts to move down, I
will know something, to be recorded at a later time.? I will know when my
fuel flow/totalizer tells me how much I have used at that point.

There's some ambiguity there, as the plans call for 8"-16" from the
leading edge of the stub wing, and the range is quoted as 15%-35%, and
20% of 48" is 7.6", so the numbers don't jive. But let's say take 2" off
of the 16" for simplicity and call it 8" to 14" for an "amended" CG
range, then check the max forward loaded condition (lightest pilot and
full/empty fuel, depending on where your tanks are).? Then calculate
worst case with heavy passengers and aft-most fuel situation? and make
sure you're nowhere near the aft end of the range, adjusting as
necessary to get that range situated toward the middle, or biased toward
the front.? Generally speaking the further aft the CG is, the less
stable it will be.? There are few downsides to a forward CG, being able
to lift the nosewheeel for rotation being one, and having to crank in
some nose up trim (extra drag being the other.? The downside to too far
aft is that the plane is a handful to fly, or, it kills you shortly
after takeoff!

N56ML is slightly forward in the condition that I usually fly it in,
with half fuel, me as pilot, and the usual 20 lbs of crap I carry
(tools, spare radio, camera, etc) sitting on the seat.? I've put some
pretty heavy people in there and it gets a little light on the stick,
but not dangerous, and most people that've flown my plane would call it
quite reasonable.?

N891JF was set up by Jim Faughn to be right on the forward end of the
range with full fuel and him as pilot.? Needless to say, on my first
flight, I took off with neutral trim and flew it up to cruise altitude
that way.? Then I started checking control reactions and when I let go
of the stick it immediately nose dived!? That's the downside...it needs
trim cranked in.? That won't kill you though.? I have since added a few
things aft (flap, backup battery, APRS, ELT), so it's a little more aft,
and I noticed yesterday that my previous landing after a long cruise
back home, the trim tab was level with the elevator, so I'm flying it
"typically" with no up or down trim now, and it's quite fine...but the
heaviest person I've carried is my 100 pound daughter!

See http://www.n56ml.com/wb/index.html for more on what happens if you
go too far aft.? Been there, done that, and don't want to repeat it!

KR> Selecting an airport to be based at

Subject: Re: KR> Selecting an airport to be based at

I've been running the 8.5:1 compression O-200 in my KR and the 8.5:1 160 HP
O-320 in my SuperCub clone on a diet of 100% E0 premium fuel for the last 2
years.? I have a tank with filter, grounds, and electric fuel pump that is
anchored in the bed of my truck.? Nobody at the airport (including the airport
manager) has said anything about it other than they wish they had the same
setup.? I do make it a point to use safe practices for fire mitigation like
never fueling in the hangar.

Previously, one of the other pilots proposed to park his truck on the ramp at
the airport with my tank in the back to be used for fueling.? Of course the
airport administration went liability crazy and denied his request.? When I
decided to start using Mogas, I didn't ask.? I just made sure my fueling rig
was configured with the proper venting, filter, ground, and pump for the
application and started using it.? I also keep it painted and nice looking.?
They never questioned it.? It looks exactly the same as the fueling rigs hauled
around in many pickups for fueling farm equipment out in the fields, except
cleaner.? :o)

As Mark says, you want to start out with 100LL until you find whether you have
cooling/vapor lock issues and what your detonation margin might be.?

KRnetHeads,

Sure is quiet lately!? Too cold to work on KRs, and too busy shopping or
making Christmas presents anyway, I'm guessing.? Same here.? But I have
managed up update the N891JF brake website with some photos though, and
updated the newsletter page with links to the last installments.

See http://www.n56ml.com/n891jf/brakes/ for the brake update and
http://www.krnet.org/newsletter/ for the final batch (NL6) and the
Quarterly Newsletters, which are equally useful.? There's a lot of good

Now, off to the airport...

KR> brake problem at Barnwell

2014-11-10 Thread Lee Parker
I sold my KR because of brake problems. Not because it was not a good airplane
but because of the inferior axles, brakes, and tires. and I have a Lancair. I

a good set of axles and brakes if I was going to keep the plane

Don?t think it was my idea to install these?they were on the plane when I
bought it, and was told by the builder that they worked fine. I suspect he had
a much longer runway though! I was trying not to spend a fortune on this
?fixer-upper?, and if what was there worked, why would I replace it? They
certainly didn?t work when I bought it though, which is why I completely
rebuilt them before I flew it again (once I got it home). See
http://www.n56ml.com/n891jf/brakes/ for more on that, but I?m missing some
photos that I need to add one of these days, along with some ?fried? ones to
finish up the story.

The disk you see in the photo is the brake pad backing plate (minus the
shredded pad and rivets)?the actual disk is much thicker, and connected to the
aluminum wheel, which provides some cooling for the disk, but it can?t handle
?hard? braking for even five seconds, apparently. These are enclosed in wheel
pants too, so that?s another factor?

I know Randy was kidding when he said this. I don't think Lee's plane was
flying yet, although I could be wrong.

Lots of KRs have been totaled or substantially damaged by first flights on
"pickup".? I could have easily become a statistic myself, and I consider
myself to be a pretty good KR pilot.? You get a one-way airline ticket weeks
in advance, and when you get there you're under pressure to fly it home,
whether you (and it) are ready or not.? Although you could spend a few days
going through it to see if it's airworthy, what you really need to do is
trailer the thing home and go over it for several WEEKs, to make sure you
know exactly how it operates, and if it's really safe to fly...with no
pressure to fly it home right now.

If trailering a KR home from buying it sounds like a hassle, imagine the
hassle of? being in the hospital for a few weeks because something didn't
work exactly like you'd hoped or expected...

The advantages of an in flight adjustable or a
constant speed propeller are generally seen as
the top speed of the aircraft increases.  The
increase in speed makes the difference in the
desired blade pitch for takeoff and cruise
greater.  A fixed pitch propeller is a compromise
between the two extremes.  You must, however,
weigh the advantages of an adjustable propeller
against the cost, reliability, and any other
factors that come to bare.  An adjustable
propeller would, in theory, give you a shorter
takeoff roll, a better climb rate, and a higher cruise speed, but at what cost?

I use it when I had wet wing fuel tanks in my Mooney.  I now have bladders.  I
just used a small vacumn pressure to pull the Loctite in at the source of the
seep, then let it cure overnight.  It would seal the leak.  It only worked on
small seeps where you could see the stains of the
fuel.___

Today I logged my 51st KR2 landing in 15 hours of flying, and probably my fifth
at M38 (short and narrow home field).  Today was the first time I didn't scare
myself to death...it was actually a decent landing.  I love it while it's
flying, but landing is not my favorite flight regime. No flaps or belly board
make this thing a whole 'nuther ballgame when it comes to short fields.
"Regular" runways are a piece of cake, however.

And the best thing I can say about the POSa carb is that it hasn't succeeded in
killing me, yet!  That's going to get fixed soon!

More later, I'm sure...

Im switching from a Posa Carb to a Revmaster and since the the "rev" carb is

KR> CARBS OR DRIBBLERS

2012-07-03 Thread Lee Parker
I have a friend that has a Revflo with a low pressure pulse pump that he says
works great.

From: STEVE bennett
To: krnet
Sent: Monday, July 2, 2012 5:47 PM
Subject: KR> CARBS OR DRIBBLERS

The POSA, Lake Injector, RevFlow and AeroCarb are of all the same jenere. The
operate under minimal fuel pressure, ie gravity feed in 99.999% in most cases.
The POSA was originally used on motorcycles. The fuel pressure was about .2 of
1 psi or less.  If memory serves, 1 psi of fuel pressure requies about 40 some
odd inches of vertical height.  Fuel is 6 lb per gallon vs water being 8 lb per
gallon.  Water requires about 27 inches of vertical height for 1 psi. The above
carbs all operate the same.  Fuel arrives at the carb needle either directly in
a non adjustable mixture option or through a fuel control valve at the carb
that leans the carb out.  So if you have 12 inches of fuel pressure with a full
tank and 3 inchs at a quarter tank, your fuel pressure is reduced
accordingly. This usually makes an engine run lean if the carb's fuel adjustment
is set up with a full tank of fuel.  The above carbs do not have a float or
diaphragm.  The do not
have an elmulison tube to pre mix air with the fuel to break the fuel up into
droplets prior to being injected into the intake. Thus the term "dribblers". If
you have a mixture control, you set the carb up so you can actually add more
fuel to the engine.  This requires that the mixture control when set initally
be pulled out a little so you can go "over rich" if necessary. If you do a 3G
pull up, you put 3 times the fuel pressure to the carb and you  can make the
enigne stumble.  If you go over the top, a 2G "push over" you can make the
engine run lean "stumble" and almost quit!  Plug the fuel vent with the "Jesus
Bug" and the engine will quit in short order. The Ellison uses a diaphragm in
the fuel well.  This is actuated by a teeter todder on the main fuel valve.
Fuel pressure via a fuel pump keeps the pressure constant to the carb
irrespective of the amount of fuel in the tank so the mixture is constant.  The
fuel jet has about 100 (just a
guess) .006" or so holes in it  so the fuel is broken up into particles  vs
drops as it is injected into the intake manifold.  The mixture is adjusted by
rotating the main fuel jet relative to the airflow, vs. restricting the flow of
fuel as on a POSA, Lake, RevFlow or Aero Carb. The Ellison EFS-2 is no longer
in production due to lack of sales when the AeroCarb came out. The EFS-3 is a
little big for the VW but can work by restricting the throttle position. The
Rotex Carb is not an Ellsion. It looks similar, but look at the details to get
the full picture.

http://www.engr.sjsu.edu/nikos/projectsMSAE.htm , along with the current
subject report.  These two reports are very similar and contain some of the
same mistakes and factual errors.  If I were Nordin, I'd feel violated!  I

unlike the other reports listed on that page.  The document security is also

I could go on, but why bother?  This "analysis" is a complete "red herring"

KR> Landing a taildragger

2012-05-06 Thread Lee Parker
Well, I finally figured out what my problem was landing.  First off my brakes
were not very good so, I changed the master cylinders and that fixed that.  I
was using the slight slack method on the tail wheel.  I changed to springs with
very little slack and installed a tailwheel lock ( which I found that I didn't
need).
I have almost  3000 hours in various planes with a commercial with instrument
so I'm not new to flying.  This has been my first tail dragger and "it has been
a learning experience".  If I had to do it again I would have gotten my tail
wheel end endorsement.  I finally got my fourty hours flown off today and made
the best landing yet.  My landing were so bad when I first started a croud
would gater when I flew my KR, they would take bets on whether I would ground
loop it or not.  I found out that the problem was not so much me as the tail
wheel rigging.

Subject: KR> KR NOT overly PITCH Sensitive. NOT NOT NOT.

HEY, I am not saying that the KR has a pitch sensitivity problem.  I am just
responding to that issue to dispel it as it is a CG problem if you are having
pitch sensitivity, or you can't keep from over controlling it.

I never had any issues when I had my VW on the plane with the fuel in the
header, NEVER.  NO PITCH Problems, NONE.  I could fly it hands off, and still
can.

I built fuel tanks that weigh 22 # each and put them in the wings full span
between the spars.  I thought I had to get the weight back to counter the extra
weight of the Corvair.  That turned out to be NOT the case.

WHAT I AM SAYING is simply that if you have pitch sensitivity issues and you
are NOT over controlling the plane, you have a CG problem.

I DO NOT have a pitch sensitivity issue even with my plane in the current
configuration.  It is just too heavy for me to do a decent landing.  It takes
off and flies great.  In fact, yesterday when I had 130# in the right seat, I
was flying it "HANDS OFF".

I apologize for giving everyone the wrong impression about pitch sensitivity
with the KR.

KR> Wing weights

2012-04-20 Thread Lee Parker
My plane weighed 630 lbs. with oil, elt and one gallon of fuel.  I concentrated
on being light.  I used shorter screws when possible.  I also have very little
filler in my plane.  I block sanded my wings being careful not to sand into the
glass.  I also have diehl wing skins.  My engine cowling only weighs ten lbs
and two ounces.  I added another eight ounces by making the exhaust cooling
outlet larger.  I used a Rotec fuel injector which has worked great.  I also
have a Revflo injector if anyone is interested.  I thought my plane was over
weight but I guess I'm in better shape than I thought.  I still have two hours
to go to get the fourty hours flown off.  I'm still having trouble landing the
bad boy as this is the first tail dragger for me.  My best cruise speed so far
is 152 mph on a 2100D.  I had the prop repitched which didn't do a lot for
speed but did lower my RPM's down to 3350 WOT at altitude.   I have over two
thousand hours in
several different planes.  I now own a Mooney, a KR2, and a Lancair.  I enjoy
flying the KR because it is so economical.  I dynamically balanced my prop with
my new balancer and it is almost as smooth as turning on an electric fan.  I
can't believe the difference.  This is the second plane I have built.  The
Lancair was first.  The KR took longer because I had to make so many parts from
scratch.

Dave,

I think my Diehl wings with 10 gal aluminum tanks and no lights are around
67# each.  The tanks were about 22# each.  They could be built lighter by
using .035 aluminum instead of the .040 that I used.  With all the baffles,
I did not need to use the thicker material.

How heavy is your plane.  Mine is a stock KR2 and with a Corvair engine is
750#.  I think that is about 300# over the design weight for the stock KR2.
But I ain't cryin, cause it flies great.  It isn't a sports car, but I think
it is more stable than was my much lighter first KR2.

KR> Rotec

2012-01-18 Thread Lee Parker
One thing I like about the Rotec is that when you shut down the engine there is
on fuel leaking out the bottom of the throttle body, even if you don't lean the
mixture.  You just hit the prime button on the regulator one time and the
engine is good to start for the rest of the day.  Usually starts on the second
or third turn.  My engine never ran so smooth.  I like it so far.  I have not
used the Ellison very much so I don't really know a lot about it.  I know Mark
Lankford had one on his plane.  The Rotec has 50 tiny holes in the center bar
that atomizes the fuel so you don't end up with droplets in the cylinder or
uneven fuel distribution to the cylinders.  That probably is the reason my EGTs
are so close.

Interesting Steve!

I did not realize the AeroCarb was a close copy of the EFS-2! I am
running an EFS-2 on my 2.4 VW but I am looking at upgrading it to an
EFS-3 as I think it might be restricting the airflow a bit at the moment.

I wonder if the AeroCarb would be an option? I suppose I need to look at
throat diameter. Fitting an EFS-3 would be easier though as the linkages
would be similar to my current setup as shown here:

KR> Carbs /quasi injectors

2012-01-18 Thread Lee Parker
The Rotec now has a tube that runs from the regulator to the throttle body to
equalize the pressure which eliminates the hesitation.  So far I have not had
any problems.  Mine ran good right out out of the box.  I just had to adjust
the idle speed.  My EGTs  are now within fourty degrees of each other at cruise.

Just a small note, the Rotec carb, is not a fuel injection system, nor fuel
injector when compared to what a modern day automotive fuel injection system
is. It is a knock off of the Ellison series of carburetors. Their web site does
say " fuel injection", if you read down the page a bit. When Monnett came out
with his AeroCarb, a POSA knock off, is killed the sales of the EFS-2, so Ben
Ellison ceased production of that particular carb. Ellison Fluid Systems still
manufacutrers all the other carbs.
http://www.rotecradialengines.com/TBI/TBI.htm
http://ellison-fluid-systems.com/injectors.shtml Steve Bennett

Good note Steve. Absolutely true. In the sense of today's modern fuel
injection, or even the Lycoming/Continental style fuel injection, these are
carburetors. They call themselves "Throttle body" injectors due to the lack of
a venturi, so they are more resistant to carb ice, although they certainly can
ice up. You'll note that Rotec considers carb heat to be manditory equipment.

My hangar mate is using the Aerocarb on his 6 cyl Jabaru powered Sonex. They
had a lot of trouble getting it tuned and working right, but it seems to work
well since they finally figured it out. They have never had the plane below
5000' yet, so they may find some low altitude tuning issues when they do. The
mixture on the Aerocarb doesn't seem to be very useful. About all I can say
about it is that it is more friendly than a Stromberg NAS, but not as
effective. And it is nowhere near as nice as a Marvel Schebler.

The Rotec throttle body appears to be a knock off of the Ellison, but there is
one important difference. These types of carbs are very sensitive to Gs, flow
and air pressures. The Ellison has the pressure regulator built in as part of
the throttle body. The Rotec has the regulator mounted separately, but there
are restrictions on where you can mount it as posted below from the Rotec FAQs.
Additionally, some testing I know about with the Rotec demonstrated that
differing air pressures between the throttle body and the regulator created a
bit of a disconnect in that the regulator and the throttle body weren't working
together very well and required a pressure equilization hose to be run between
them.

Dave,

I have used a motorcycle battery to crank my O-200 in my KR since it was new
(14 1/2 years now). I can't recall the exact model right now, but it's a very
common one used in many of the bigger bikes, so is readily available at all the
discount autoparts stores. I typically get 6 - 7 years service per battery. The
down side is that I do have to add water occasionally and I get some acid
damage to the paint on the belly from the venting acids.

I have a Odyssey PC-680 cranking the 160 hp O-320 in my home built SuperCub. If
it had fit without making major modifications, I would have converted the KR to
the Odyssey battery as well. I've only had the Cub flying for a few months, but
others using the Odyssey batteries in their RVs and GlasAirs have several years
of use on their batteries, so apparently they do have at least a few years
longevity.

2011-11-02 Thread Lee Parker
I changed the small 4" tail wheel on my KR to a larger 6" tail wheel (solid
rubber). . That makes the tail wheel farther back a few inches.  It now sits
about 3 1/2" higher which makes it easier to see over the nose.  I know the
math doesn't add up but, the new tail wheel I installed I made from a hospital
stretcher and it sits higher.  The Tractor Supply cap bearing will fit right
into the holes and a 1/4" will fit the bearings.  It also makes it easier to
land and roll out is a lot easier to control.. I am not as likely to ground
loop it now.  I takes a little more room to turn it around but, at least I can
land it now without ground looping it. I am a 2000 hr. pilot but learning to
fly a KR is a lot different but I have found that the more you play with it the
more you learn..  Tail wheels are a whole different ball game.  I now have 10
hours on it and still working out the bugs.

Dave,
I converted N6242 from a conventional retract gear to fixed tri-gear using
Diehl fixed mains and nose gear.  The large holes in the wing in front of
the spar were converted to inspection panels; very useful.  The large holes
aft of the spar were mostly closed in with foam and glass lay-up.  You are
correct: After fill, sanding and paint, the cover up is invisible.
If you use the RR spring gear, the RR gear legs may be to short to match the
nose gear height and steering geometry.  The RR spring bar would need to be
absolutely latched in the down and locked position; you may not have room
under the seat for that setup.  The RR gear legs are HUGE flat plates
hanging out in the air stream; sort of a speed brake permanently deployed.
You will have much difficulty fairing around those wiggly gear legs.  On
most retract KR-2 there is an aileron control cable running through the area
aft of the main spar.  You will need to re-route the cable or use more
modern control linkages.  If you have a spring bar aft of the spar, where
are you going to mount the stick?

Highly recommend you use the Diehl or similar fixed main gear.  Fairings are
also available.

--
The aircraft was issued it's N-Number (N86KR) in 1986, and is in need of
3 things, it seems - wing pins, some avionics replacement, and
conversion to tri-gear (personal preference).

The pins can be bought from NVAero from what I understand, I've got the
avionics I plan to install back home - those are the 'easy' jobs..

The tri-gear conversion seems the most difficult, and has been the
subject of much thought & online research, resulting in the following
plan (which I'm seeking comments/advice on)

1) Components would be the original KR2 spring-bar mains, and the Diehl
nose gear kit as sold by NVAero.

2) The 'objective' is to convert the plane from taildragger to tri-gear
'in-place', prior to ferrying it from where it is now to my home state.

3) From what I've read here and online, the largest block of time (and
largest requirement for jigs/tools/space/etc) in doing this work is the
post-conversion re-assembly - which generally is done by flipping the
plane and re-glassing the area cut open to gain access to the spar/gear.

What I have come up with, is a *possible* process to accomplish this
conversion without flipping the plane, by raising it up on jacks,
cutting away a rectangular patch of skin (and saving it in-tact for
later) to create access to the mains. At this point, the gear could be
'flipped' from the front of the spar to the back, and then the
rectangular patch would be re-attached with doublers around the edges
(inside the stub wings, not out in the airstream) and Hysol 9309.3
(microbead structural adhesive) for an adhesive and gap filler. Properly
done (eg, keeping the patch sucked up tight to the plane while the Hysol
cures) it should be just about as strong as the original structure, and
once sanded & painted, invisible...

Now, I'm not familliar with the specifics of the KR2 design yet (this is
a mix of army helo repair techniques, online research, and so on),
beyond what I can read online. Apart from a small bit of added weight
(from 4 doubler strips and the 9309), do you guys see any issues with
this plan? Is it going to create issues with the structure of the
stub-wings? Am I going to have trouble cutting out the 'access patch'
and separating the glass skin from the rest of the structure (Say, due
to the skin being adhered to foam & wood structure, making intact
removal of a cut-out section impossible)

I'm submitting this for comment, because you guys know alot more about
these planes than I do at this point... For all I know, there is a very
good reason why everyone flips the plane & does it the 'conventional'
way - or maybe it's just that's

I have three planes.  You will get a letter in the mail explaining when you
need to re-register each plane.  There is a three month window to do it.  You
can do it online and it cost $5.00.

KR> Aircraft Tax Question

2011-06-29 Thread Lee Parker
Jack, I got my letter a couple of months ago.  They wanted a copy of the bill
of sale where I purchased the kit.  I tried to explain that the airplane was
not finished.  They wanted me to pay the tax on the value of the plane
finished.  I made up a figure somewhere close to the amount that I had spent on
parts and materials, which came to around $8K dollars and figured the tax and
sent it to them with a copy of the bill of sale.  They got me on my Lancair
last year.  Thank goodness you only have to pay it once.  I should be flying
the KR2 shortly.  I have a few little things to finish and call the FAA.  I
have a friend at the FAA who is an inspector when you get ready.  He says he
enjoys checking out the experimentals.  Some of the local RV boys use a DAR
which is ok but, he charges $400.00 .  The FAA does it for free.  We pay their
salaries so we might as well use them.

In my negotiations with the County Tax people just south of you I took pictures
of my airplane in a disassembled state and included some early articles from
Kitplanes and other magazines which contained the info that the plane has a VW
engine and can be built for $3000 in materials - you can find all of that
online.  Include the Popular Mechanix cover story with a picture of Ken Rand
and his original KR-1.  Put a nice package of this info together for them -
educate them. They only know RV's and factory builts when it comes to planes so
you have to inform them of just how inexpensive and special the KR is - made
out of styrofoam and plywood.

This is a better route than asking owners what they think their airplanes are
worth.  We all think our planes are worth at least $25K.

Today I flew up to see Fontana Dam again, in western North Carolina...an hour

and some rafters (orange dots in the middle of the photo), as well as the power

Some of the smaller airports are the best.  While flying back from the
gathering 4years ago. We had to spend the night in Liberal KS.  We
were able to use their courtesy car for the night. When he went off
the runway in st johns AZ they let's use the car to go into town to
get a bite to eat and when I got back the airport mgr had some
blankets ready for me to use. They had a shower there and he said that
I could watch tv and sleep on the couch for the night.  In my mind the
smaller the airport the better the service.

Cover the fuselage and wet lay-up areas with micro (epoxy with micro
balloons).  Be sure to clean off all your finger prints from the plywood for
best adhesion.  Clean the wax and finger prints from the fiberglass with
Metal Prep 79 to save lots of unnecessary, futile and dangerous sanding.
Mix enough micro balloons for a wet peanut butter consistency.  You will
sand most of the micro off and it sands quite easily by hand.  Use the
longest and flattest sanding board you can get to fit.  The micro will fill
all the checks in the plywood and the weave valleys in the fiberglass to
provide a smooth leveled surface ideal for primer.  Remember to only touch
the sanded and cleaned surfaces with gloved hands.

"If there ARE other A&Ps reading  & 'using' this net we need to start
monitoring this net a bit more closely  and offering our advice to our fellow
builders (and pilots, also, for that  matter.)"

Forgive me while I respond to two posts with one reply. Like Jeff's response I
am also an A&P and did actually make my living for a year and a half turning
wrenches on GA airplanes. Loved the work hated the lack of money. One of the
problems with your suggestion is that in that year and a half I met more than
one A&P that had absolutely no business having a wrench in their hand, I even
know an IA that falls into this same category. Quite an eye opening experience
for me. Also like Jeff when I see a response that I feel strongly about I will
usually respond directly to the sender. This may rob others of my particular
opinion but that is just what it is.
As far as the aileron attachment was concerned I installed my nut plates on the
back of my spar with small #4 x 1/4" wood screws and then floxed over the heads
on the screws and ears of the nut plate. This eliminated the head of a rivet on
the other side or the need to counter sink the spar or add a strip of nut
plates riveted to a separate piece of metal. But it accomplishes the same thing
and that is to provide shear resistance to the nut plate. I also put my screws
on 4" centers instead of 6" centers.
And personally I thought the tube pinching ideas were not just good but
obviously "airworthy".
One last thing, I had the pleasure of meeting Jeff for the first time at last
year's gathering. He is no idiot and I have incorporated his suggestion into my
airplane.

I tried to use a r/c servo with a test controller, and it worked fine
until the transponder transmitted, then it went to full deflection.

If  you use a r/c landing gear servo, it does not use a pulse modulation
to control it, it might work.

I went with a Ray allen servo, which works just fine.

KR> Slick finnish.

I wouldn't put anything on dry.  It leaves you open to air pockets under the
finish which causes bubbles in the paint later on.  Peel ply works and helps
remove excess resin.

I like peel ply.  I know it works.  If the micro does not wet out, then it
will just flake off and you will not have accomplished anything.  A quick
test on a small piece should tell the tale.  Not sure about the "lighter"
either as peel ply actually sucks up excess resin, but I will bet we are
talking grams here.

pour dry micro balloons over the wing and brush it around to fill in the
weave. After drying just rake the excess back into the can. He said that
this would be lighter than the peelplying method but how much weight are we
talking here ? Is there a best way to do this ?

I listened to the interview and never heard anything about $62 a
gallon.  That might be what it's costing them for their "test"
batches but they claim it should be comparable to 100LL when in full
production.  They also claim it will increase your horse power by
allowing you to advance timing by 2 or 3 degrees.  Personally, I hope
they succeed.  If they do, I don't expect to see it on the market for
3 to 5 years.  Also, if I heard correctly, they have produced a 4000
gallon batch or two for running a test engine (a big one, 540ci or
so) to TBO and check for wear.

KR> Paint :Imron

2009-12-07 Thread Lee Parker
Most automotive paint and supply stores sell the wet paper for final finishing
the clear coats.  Actually I prefer the palm sander.  It is much easier to use.

DA is short for "dual action" sander.  It is body shop  lingo to describe
the air powered sander that has been around a long time.   I have never heard
of using one with wet or dry paper, but I guess you  could.  I would think
it would sling filthy water in your face, all over  the shop, and inside
your project.  Watching out for the sharp edges  is very good advice.  Sanders
eat through these areas very quickly.   Sort of like when you cover a fabric
wing and you avoid sanding on the ribs much  to keep from eating through
the fabric.  Power sanding tools can  do a lot of damage in a hurry if not
watching what your doing.  Be  careful.

KR> Paint :Imron

2009-12-04 Thread Lee Parker
Imron is just a brand name.  Many of the paint company make single stage
urethane paints that do the same thing.  The urethane paints were used several
years ago before the base clear coat paints arrived on the scene.  I like the
premium line base clear coats because they are so much easier to work with.  If
you get a run or sage, it can easly be sanded and buffed out without repainting
the entire section.  Also, base clears are so much easier to repair.  You just
blend into the existing paint and burn in the clear top coat.  It is very hard
to see where you made the repairs and is less expensive in the long run.  Clear
coats will buff to a mirror like finish and Imron is very hard to buff
expecially if is has cured for any length of time.  With clear coats, if you
get a little lint or dirt in the top coat you simply sand the clear top coat
with ultra-fine sand paper and buff.  We do some antiques and street cars and
we will put as high as four
or five coats of clear and DA sand them with 1500 grit, 2000 grit and then
3000 grit and buff several times to get the desired finish.  Ultra fine sanding

One intrepid builder in the UK has used Rustoleum combicolor paint on his
aircraft. He was inspired by the amazing finishes the VW campervan community
were achieving! There is an article about it in the April 2009 LAA magazine.
(our equivalent to the EAA).
He applied it heavily thinned with white spirit with a 4" roller in very
thin coats.
The advantage being that small components can be finished and put away, with
the minimum of workshop preparation as there is no overspray.
The plane hasn't flown yet so we are all waiting to see how durable it is.
There was some question about how hard it was.

I've done body work for thirty five years.  I am a firm believer in using
quality paint and undercoats.  Limco and the other generic brands don't have
the UV protectors that your major brand paints have.  We've tried many brands
of the cheaper paints and they just don't hold up.  I would not spend five or
more years building an airplane to put a cheap paint job on it.  Just doesn't
make sense.

KR> ethanol and the Ellison

2009-11-30 Thread Lee Parker
I have a friend who has had several race cars.  He said they tested the 100LL
against 93 octane auto gas and the auto gas came out with more horse power on
the  dynometer.  He also said the auto fuel ran smoother and had less problems
with the valves after the engines were broken in.  Embry Riddle University did
a test several years ago on Mogas and determined that if you used auto fuel you
could cut your maintainence cost signifiantly.  You can check the archives if
you want to read about it.  I tried Mogas in my mooney and found that it also
ran smoother.  The only problem was PRC fuel tank sealer won't hold up to auto
gas.  I have friends with experimentals that have their fuel tanks sealed with
Epoxy Novalac that run the ethanol and so far have not had any problems.  I
think most of the problems with auto fuel is the risk of vapor lock and fuel
tank sealers.

KR> Careful what you carry with you

2009-11-01 Thread Lee Parker
I spent 31 years in a public safety career.  Any item that was in a private
airplane was considered personal property.  We were instructed to return any
personal items to the owner.  Guns were also considered private property and
returned to the owner.  On the other hand I live in Tennessee and we respect
the right to bear arms.  Other states may be different.  EMT's in Tn. have no
authority to take any persons property unless it has to do with the injured
persons injuries or well being.  That includes guns, knives, etc.  That EMT
should be reprimanded.

Dan,
Call the Emergency Medical Services office and ask for the Director. You
haven't heard from the police because you didn't break a law. An EMT has
absolutely no authority to confiscate anything - they can remove stuff if it
hampers their job of providing medical services - they cannot take
anything - period. I was an EMT for four years from NC to Hawaii. He

No, not at all.  It's certainly a free country.  I asked for volunteers a
few weeks ago, and you were one of them, but after I made my comment about
the event being held at a somewhat centralized location, several of the
volunteers were sufficiently hacked off that they withdrew their
invitations.  You're certainly free to make any offer you'd like to make.
The vote at the Gathering will be deciding factor, as always.  It's up to
the participants to decide where they want to hold the next one, and up to
the pilots to decide if they want to fly there or not.  If AJO or somewhere
else in California is voted as the place for the next Gathering, then I'll
do my best to fly there.  Mark Jones also volunteered his place at KSTE, but
I'm not convinced that one would win a vote by the majority either, although
y'all are both welcome to prove me wrong on this.  I'll try to be neutral,
but that appearance is probably toast at this point.  I thought I'd found
the perfect offer, but like I said, it's not up to me.  Please don't let me
be the guy who started a perception of some kind of rift between the East
and West coasts.  I'm already stressed out enough.

One thing's for sure, we can't expect Larry to do this forever...

OK, I lied.  I haven't given up yet.  Although Dana's Key West idea really
is pure genius, that's a long way for me, and I live in Alabama!  I have
another plan.  I just looked through some of the old Gathering photos, and
the ones of Red Oak Iowa (http://www.airnav.com/airport/KRDK) still remind
me of the nice rural countryside, multiple runway airport, and great people.
Mike Garbez and Steve Bennett put this one on, and I'm guessing that if
others volunteer to deal with hats T-shirts and awards, that'd make things a
lot easier on them, and they might be coerced into doing it again.  That'd
be closer to the West Coast, near Omaha's major airport. It struck most of
us as being a perfect place when we were there.  The nearest hotel is 2.2
miles, and the beer store is only slightly further, and they have kegs!  The
only way you could get any closer to the center of the country is go a
little south to Kansas City Missouri or maybe western Kansas.

Having said all of this, I don't have a problem with going to California one
year, but I wouldn't want it to be the only KR Gathering of the year because
many east coast folks wouldn't be able to attend.  But as a "freebie"
Gathering, I think that's a great idea for those who could make it.  Same
with the other locations that volunteered.

Of course this is all somewhat hypothetical, as there has to be a vote at
this year's Gathering on where the 2010 Gathering will be, and it's really
anybody's game.  If somebody comes up with a better idea and we vote it in,
that's great.  It's really up to all of this year's Gathering attendees to
vote for where it will be next year..that's the way it's always worked.

I think I just saw three Spitfires fly over in formation, and then a DC-3
like thing, all headed in the direction of Popham airport, so I'm outta
here...

KR> KR-1 Plans Available

2009-05-22 Thread Lee Parker
To copy someone's plans is stealing.  Why not just order them  and pay the
small price they cost.  Then you can feel good about the whole thing when your
plane is finished.

GOOD DEAL!

KR information should be public domain anyway.  The  original KR is
outdated to the point they are more of a GUIDE than  PLANS.   I believe this
"loyalty" is misguided and silly.  There  is a Yahoo group that has a bunch of
free downloadable plans from years past and  this might be a good place for the
KR plans.  This site can be found  here:

_http://ca.groups.yahoo.com/group/cfair/?yguid=62311250_
(http://ca.groups.yahoo.com/group/cfair/?yguid=62311250)

Bottom line:  I don't think if the plans are given away  free that more KRs
will be built.  The plans cost is so tiny compared to  the overall cost of
the project

Also, I already have KR1 plans bought from Jeanette nearly 10  years ago.

Hey  Guys,
I have put a digital set of KR-1 plans up on the internet.  They  are
available via bit torrent and the torrents can be downloaded  from
www.isohunt.com, www.thepiratebay.org and www.demonoid.com.   Demonoid
requires an account which you have to get through invitation but  isohunt
and
thepiratebay are free.

I'm also thinking that I'll post  it on a file sharing website like
mediafire
so those without bittorrent can  get it.  The download is 208mb and includes
all of the manuals and  prints required for the KR-1.  There are actually 2
different sets of  plans that I scanned.  The scan quality on some of the
plans is  lacking so there is a B&W and Colour set.  I'm planning  on
digitally retouching all of the older prints both for clarity and also  so
they can be compressed more, for ease of downloading.

I'm putting  the plans on the net because I'm irritated at how long it took
the get the  plans from Rand Robinson, there was no chance of telephone
correspondance  and I was irritated by the serious lack of quality in the
plans.   There appreared to be missing pages in the construction manual and
the  drawings were very helter skelter.  The construction manual  even
references drawings that apparently don't exist.

If anyone has  a set of KR-2 or KR-2S plans they would be willing to loan me
I would love  to get a set of those up on the internet.  Please bear in mind
that  I'm trying to do this as a favour to the community.  It costs me
about
$50 to get the large plans scanned and then there is considerible  work on
my
part to scan and assemble all of the other material.

Hope  you enjoy em!

KR> Cleaning Brushes and Buying Peel Ply

2009-04-08 Thread Lee Parker
Don't clean your brushes.  Go to Harbor Freight and get some chip brushes.  I
buy them by the box and they are cheap.  Throwing them away does less damage to
the enviroment than cleaning them and worrying about what to do with the used
cleaning solution.

Hi Kurt, Easiest way I found is to have a bucket of acetone with a lid on it
beside my work bench. I drop the brush in it BEFORE it starts to set and
continue doing other things like laying peel ply on with a squeegie. When I'm
finished I wash the brush around in the acetione and wipe dry with a rag. Next
I rub in a generous quantity of citrus hand cleaner which rips through the
residue. Wash up in water and leave to dry. Comes up like new every time.

Keeping this short, is there anyone with ANY KR2 version near knoxville, TN?
I'd like to visit, or invite to visit [I live on TN87, 8nm south of TYS,

FW: KR> RE: RC Servo

2008-10-12 Thread Lee Parker
I used a 1995 Toyota heater control motor for a trim servo on both my rudder
and elevator. A 1992-1995 Lexus ES-300 also works. The heater control cables
also work well because they are very strong and lightweight. Use the pink and
orange wires to run the motor. If you need feedback for a gauge to tell the
location of the trim tab, use the other 3 wires for that. I chose not to use a
gauge.

parley byington  wrote:  Larry;

I use a small window crank mounted on the cokpit side just behind my
throttle quadrant to move a spring attached to my rudder cable as a trim.
I purchased the window crank at a local hardware store for under $10.00.
This crank, there are several different models available, is the type used
in some campers and is readily available. The crank has a geared shaft
that travels for and aft depending on the direction you turn the small 2
inch handle. This device comes complete with mounting hardware and was
simple to attach and works great.

Just another idea, hope it helps.
