I am currently selling a travel pillow on eBay and would like some advice
please.
I am in the UK and have had one person from Canada and one from Germany both
trying to place bids.
Does anyone know how to change the settings to allow this please?
I have spent ages reading through the support pages but have had no luck!
Many thanks

Thank you also for the stamps and the teddy scented sachet that perfumed the

The keyring scissors are a great idea as you never have a pair when you need
them.

[lace-chat] Lancaster

2006-02-11 Thread Anne Nicholas
Hi,

I have just had a call from my son who is in Lancaster visiting his girlfriend
who is at university there.

He told me of a new shop that opened there today called Bobbins and Beads (I
think)
As today was their opening day there was someone there making lace so he spoke
to her about his mum who makes lace. He always was the chatty type !!

He also spoke to the shop owner who told him that they are in the process of
making a website.

I said that I didn't think that Lancaster was particularly famous for its
lacemaking but he thinks I'm wrong as there are a few shops there selling
bobbins.

Can anyone tell me who is right please?

I also asked him why he has never come home with any bobbins for me !!!

All for now,

Dear Secret Pal in Australia,

Many thanks for the lovely parcel of goodies that arrived yesterday. I had a
bad day at work so it was a welcome relief to have something lovely to open !

I love the teddy key ring ! It has already been added to my keys.

I might follow your suggestion and use the fan sticks when I make the fan
that I have been promising myself for about the last 5 years ! Although the
actual fan is very pretty.

Unfortunately the case to the calendar was damaged but as it is a cd case was
easily replaced. The calendar has lovely pictures and will make us think of

[lace-chat] Secret Pal Thanks

2005-11-18 Thread Anne Nicholas
Hi Secret Pal,

Thanks for this months parcel of goodies.
I love the needle case and my aunty who is a lace maker and a bobbin maker
will be very jealous when I tell her about the rescued trees!

The bobbin is very unusual and I don't have another like it. I also love the
spangles and will put them to good use.

I had guessed in the end that you must of been here or sent someone else who
was over. What a great pity that I missed you and Faye it would of been so
lovely to meet you!
I was at work but only work a mile away and could of popped home if I'd known
you were coming.
I'm surprised that you found our house at all ! Friends here have a problem
with the aptly named Wigley Road and I'm not surprised you got lost trying to
return !
What a fantastic trip you made and you were very lucky to visit so many
countries and so many lace places!

The past months have gone so quickly and I can't believe next month is the
last.
Until then,

[lace-chat] Re: [lace] Continuing problems with AOL and others!

2005-06-19 Thread Anne Toney
I ran into problems sending to AOL addresses in another group. The tech I
talked with said it was because I had a business card attachment. Just a
few days earlier I had no problems with sending to AOL. It coincided with
AOL's decision to start attaching ads, etc., to emails. It could be that
the unsubscribe tag is causing the bounces. AOL members are only allowed to
send to a maximum of 10 people if even 1 of the addresses is to a Yahoo
address. This went into effect at the same time.

Dear Secret Pal,

I went and collected my parcel from the sorting office tonight after work.

Thank you for the gardening gloves they are just what I need as last weekend

sizes too big!

I love the tissues and the lavender smellies and the lilac coloured notelets.

I usually make the Christmas ornaments on bangles so the bangles will
certainly come in very handy.

Last but not least another beautiful handmade card and in lilac also!!

Thank you so much for all the lovely goodies. I can't wait until next month

[lace-chat] Re: school dinners

2005-05-08 Thread Anne Nicholas
Hi Liz,
At the primary school that I work in the children are only entitled to a
free school dinner if their parents are on income support otherwise it costs
£1.60 a day.

The Jamie Oliver programme has had a brilliant effect at our school and
because of it last week our canteen stopped selling crisps and chocolate
bars at lunch time and have adopted a 'Healthy Meals' programme.

As far as our staff were concerned this should of happened a long time ago
and it is a shame that this doesn't stop the children who bring their own
packed lunch from bringing crisps (they are not allowed chocolate in their
packed lunch anyway)

Hope this answers your question but it does vary from borough to borough and
so not all schools will be the same.

Best wishes,

We have been watching the Jamie Oliver TV series on the School dinners, and
his effort to get decent food into the schools.
Do the kids have to pay for these dinners, and if so, how much?
I have a feeling they are free, but not sure.

Re: [lace-chat] Charles and Camilla

2005-02-10 Thread Anne Toney
Actually, I think the fact that Lady Di is dead clears it in the eyes of the
church. I know that's why the Catholic Church allowed my aunt to get
married in the church. Her first husband died and they didn't count the
husbands after him. History shows us that most of the monarch would be hard
put to be "Defenders of the Faith" considering their indiscretions. If it's
so terrible for the US to have a gay bishop, then it's also terrible that he
and Camilla have been lovers for so long. Personally I think Charles should
be skipped entirely and Will designated the heir.

[lace-chat] bent pins

2005-01-23 Thread Anne Nicholas
Hi,

Does anyone in the UK know where we can send bent pins please?
My lace group always used to give them to Christine Springett and then
Fountains.
We used to save them all year and then someone would take them to the NEC.
We haven't heard of anywhere we can send them now and wonder if it's worth
still collecting them?

Many thanks,

[lace-chat] Secret Pal Thanks

2005-01-15 Thread Anne Nicholas
Dear Secret Pal,

Thank you so much for your parcel of goodies that arrived today.
You are certainly multi-talented as the card that you sent is beautiful.

Thank you so much for the thread I love the colours and will have to find a
pattern so that I can use them!

My husband has been eying up the jelly babies as they are his favourite so I
expect that he will have them and I will have my favourite the white chocolate
!!

The notelets always come in handy as I never have any when I need one, so no
excuses now !

The sachet is already in a drawer and smells lovely!

I have never seen the tweezer and magnifying glass set before but aren't they
a good idea ?
I have a feeling that my husband will be using them as well as me as he makes
oo gauge model trains and is always after both a magnifying glass and tweezers
!!

Now to answer a few of your questions.
I have done some cross stitch in the past but haven't done any recently and
this weekend if I find the time I am going to have a go at some wire lace. I
have been promising myself this since before Christmas so we'll see !!

My birthday is in September but my 26th wedding Anniversary is 24th February.
I can't believe that it is almost a year since we celebrated our Silver
Anniversary, where does the time go ?

My favourite colours are lilacs and pinks and my favourite patterns are
torchon and very simple Bucks. as I have only had a limited go at that. I
collect small teddy bears and snowmen.

All for now,
many thanks again,
Anne Nicholas

[lace-chat] Re: [lace] Lace Guild Advent Calendar competition

2004-12-30 Thread Anne Nicholas
"Has anyone successfully managed to send an entry to the Lace Guild Advent
Calendar competition? I keep getting a form submission error - and am not
certain if the problem is at my end or the web sites."
Hi Karen,
No the problem is not at your end .
I have never entered the competition before and thought this year I would
give it a go .

I got the same error report as you so I copied and pasted the form onto Word
and e-mailed it to the Lace Guild.

I then thought that I had better e-mail David to see if he had received it.
He hadn't and told me to do it again directly to him.

David wrote back again and said that it hadn't worked and he sent me an
order to send the answers in not using the entry form.

So third time lucky he received my answers!!
Good luck,

[lace-chat] lacemaking family

2004-07-08 Thread Anne Nicholas
Hi,

My lacemaking family began with my aunty Barbara who taught herself from books
and makes the most perfect lace and is an inspiration to us all !!

About 15 or so years ago when my sister Alison was on holiday with her she
taught her to make lace. This proved a bit tricky when she came home and many
a lesson were taught over the phone. Very expensive !!

My sister then looked up a local group which was Isleworth Lacemakers taught
by Julie Nicholls and joined after while on the waiting list.

Alison then taught my daughter Beverley who was about 11 at the time. Beverley
made lace for about a year but as she can not sit in one place for more than
ten minutes this was not too successful.

Alison then suggested that I learn using Beverley's equipment so that is how I
started making lace 11 years ago. I also joined Isleworth Lacemakers.

About 6 months later Mum decided if they can do it so can I so she started as
well !!

[lace-chat] survey

2004-07-03 Thread Anne Nicholas
Hi,

The piece of lace that I am working on has been on the pillow since 2000 !!

It is a piece of church lace from an Eva Kortelati (sp?) book that I started
in memory of my dad who died in 2000. My mum made some too and that has been
in the church since 2001.

The lace was originally intended to go on a table but is now going to be
used on a windowsill as realistically I would never get it finished !!

The trouble is every time that I think that I have finished I find out that
it needs to be a bit longer. I now have only one more three inch repeat to
do and then all I have to do is mount it on the linen.

I am planning to have it in the church by the end of the summer. We'll see
!!

Your package arrived safely yesterday. Thank you so much for all the

Alas, my DD confiscated the Kinder eggs. We discovered them when we visited

time trying to translate the Dead Sea salts package before I noticed it was
in English too. LOL

The tiny appliques are adorable. I always welcome thread. A lacer can

I just bought a packet of limescale remover wipes for my bathroom and
kitchen sinks - if the water in Poole was any harder, it wouldn't come out

stuff. The warning on the packet of wipes is "Not to be used for personal

[lace-chat] Secret Pal Thanks

2004-01-26 Thread Anne Toney
Merci beaucoups, moi amie.

That's about all the French I know and it's probably wrong. LOL

I'm sorry to be so late in thanking you. I've had dental problems, a
sprained ankle, and a crashed computer. Thankfully, everything is so much
better now.

I did receive the December packet. I sent a thank you about the time my
computer decided to take a holiday, so I guess it didn't make it through.
The stocking immediately went on the tree and the divider pin on the pillow.
I used the bubbly in my bath Christmas Eve. The keychain is also in use.
Is the eagle design on the Le Puy a coat of arms? My oldest son, his wife,
and 2 daughters (12 and 7) were here for 2 days right after Christmas. They
were properly awed when I showed them all the things you sent. I even
shared the calissons with them. My daughter-in-law is so proud that now she
s has eaten something from France.

The sachet has been placed in my lingerie drawer. The zipper bag is
delightful; the candies delicious. The coiffes on the postcard are really
something. They look like they would be hard to wear. The Santa will go on
my tree next year. It looked skimpy this year because I could only find one
box of my ornaments. Wouldn't you know it--we found the missing box when we
were storing the Christmas stuff this month. I love looking at the lace on
both the calendars and hope I will someday to make some that beautiful. I
m a firm believer in aromatherapy and the wands are great!

You've have certainly been good to me. Thank you so much.

 My dear Secret Pal,

France, eh? Land of perfume and lace, cheese, bread, and wine!

Thank you so much for the goodies. The octopus is so cute. I'll have to
watch that my grandchildren take it home with them when they come to visit.
I'm looking forward to trying the prunes in my tea. The tiny bobbin is
already on a chain waiting for me to wear it. The scented wands smell so
good! I introduced my DD (23 yrs old) to aromatherapy and she in turn has
me hooked on lip gloss. She is begging me for the witch to add to her
keychain collection. Maybe if she's really, really nice to me...

I tried reading the words on the bag to her and she says my pronunciation of
French is atrocious. Hah! It's as good as my German lol. She's fluent in
Russian and has taken French also. My 2 sons deal with the German and I'm
left with the Spanish. I guess we are a multi-lingual family. We also
speak English and American.

My 2 little dogs send lots of kisses to you and your cat. By the way, you
can keep the wallabees over there. We have some in our zoo, but I don't
think any have escaped.

Again, thanks so much for such a delightful package. Now I've got to get
back to work on Christmas ornaments.

Re: [lace-chat] Books - Fanny Hill

2003-07-24 Thread Anne Toney
What on earth are you thinking, Jean? Put a "classic" in a plain wrapper!
It's research, don't you know. LOL

While studying 'Moll Flander's in my English Lit class in college, the
professor mentioned that there was another book of this genre whose name he
couldn't even mention, lest he be fired. This was in 1969 and he and I were
the only ones in the class that knew which book. Compared to TV and books
today, I found nothing explicit in 'Fanny Hill.'

Same course we read an abridged version of Clarissa by Richardson. We were
told that there was a "racy" passage in it. If so, I never noticed it. Of
course, I fell asleep about every 2 pages, so I could have missed it.

Back in the 1950s there were a couple of court cases concerning two books -
'Lady Chatterley's Lover' and 'Fanny Hill' (the latter very explicitly
described the life of a courtesan) - to try and get them banned because some

considered them both to be obscene. ... I never
managed to get hold of a copy of Fanny Hill as it was considered far more
daring and copies sold as soon as they hit the shops. ...

Then today, nearly 50 years later, while browsing in one of the remainders
shops, there was a paperback copy of 'Fanny Hill'. It's now classed as an
'erotic classic'. So I just had to buy it to find out if the fuss in the
1950s was warranted.

Haven't started reading it yet, but I feel that, if I'm going to read it in
public, I might just have to put a plain brown wrapper on it.:-)

Fairly near those villages is also a village called Moreton. The lovely
church there has the most beautifully engraved windows, not stained glass,
engraved on plain glass as a memorial to those lost in the wars. Well worth
a visit if you are in the area. It is also near to the villages of "Turners
Puddle", "Affpuddle", "Briantspuddle".

I wonder how many of you have been 'where' I have been? To "Ware" in
Hertfordshire?

Just another quirky English name place.

There is a town called "Lacy Green" near Princes Risborough in
Buckinghamshire.

In Dorset there are two villages called "Piddlehinton" and
"Piddletrenthide"!

Our Ford Anglia was a maroon coloured one! I took my driving test in it
and passed first time. That was forty year's ago! Doesn't time fly when
you're having fun?

I too had forgotten "Daps". We lived in Pontneathvaughan, near Neath in
S. Wales for eight years.

We used to call ours "plimsoles" The white we used to clean with a sort of
'white liquid' we used to 'paint' on.
