RE: [LegacyUG] Help files gone somewhere

2007-05-24 Thread ronald ferguson

Kim,

Have you downloaded the latest version of Legacy 6? I understand that in the
last updates the help files were switched (I think to html) so that they
would work on Vista. I have no way of checking the effect on Windows 9x.

You may find some information by going to the Legacy Updates page and
looking at the update history or in their error pages.

Hello to all,
I have a little problem no acutally it's huge!!! I used to have the
Standard Edition installed then realized I had to have the Delux. OK
that's as good as I thought, but, now that I have got the Delux none of my
help files pop up anymore. I'm running Windows 98se. I had all the help
files before on the Standard version but know I have to go into
C:Legacy/help, which is more a nuance than anything coz now I have to
really look for the help topic. Can someone help me please without having
to go back to version 5 is there a way I can get them to do wha they are
suposed to do when I click on the button. Hope someone can tell me. Thanks

Kim

Ron,

I have build 6.0.0.133 and the help file is a .chm as normal. There are six

Legacy etc. but all works fine in WinXP(2). Don't know about 98se but cannot
see why it should be different?

[LegacyUG] Notes for Name fields

2007-05-24 Thread MJMethod
Does anyone have suggestions for the best way to attach notes to the Name
fields (Given, Surname, Prefix, Suffix, AKA)?
- there are numerous occasions when I need to provide comments or
explanations about Names
- all other Events let us attach notes to the respective events (Birth,
Occupation, Residence, etc.), but the only way to have notes associated with
Names is to either a) put it in general notes, or b) create another event for
Name. Neither of those options is attractive (even though I'm doing it).

Am I missing something or should this be on the New Feature list?

Hi Mike,

If you go to the *source detail* there is an option for *comments* and I use
that. This then becomes specific to the source, but I find that my comments
are almost always specific to a particular source.

At the right end of the Birth, Christening, Death and Burial fields there is a

these fields. Click on the for the Born field, for example, pops up a

Clicking on the desire option opens the appropriate window for adding the

Bert: I appreciate those fields and that is my question for comparison. I
use all of those note fields and I have frequently used the Birth notes to
hold some commentary on the names. -- but there is no comparable note field
for names.

Mitch: I do add comments in Source Details, but unless you print all of the
sources, those don't print in, for example, a Descendent Narrative report.
Also, the notes I want to record are frequently about my logic for why I
settled
on a particular name, or how I found it, or why a spelling change to the
name may have occurred, or why a nickname or AKA was used.

[LegacyUG] U.S. County Verification

2007-05-24 Thread Jill King
I have inherited my Mother's genealogy. I have transferred it from PAF to
Legacy and have been working on cleaning it up. In the USA County
Verification, I have 188 pgs. I find that most of the problems are:
1)She put Of Cherokee, Iowa or something similar in the location. There is
no County called Of Cherokee. How is the best way to change this? I notice
there is the preposition that you can change in the Master Location List.
Would I make a location titled Prep: Of and then put the location? I am
concerned if I do this, when look at the person's data, I won't know if it
means In Cherokee or Of Cherokee.

  2) Other entries she put Cherokee?, Iowa There is not a County called
Cherokee?. I am assuming she meant Did they come from Cherokee? Possibly,
but not sure Is there a better way to data input that so it won't be on the
County Verification list?

I appreciate anyone's ideas so I can get this list to a manageable size to work
with.

Thanks,
Jill King

RE: [LegacyUG] U.S. County Verification

2007-05-24 Thread Alice McVearry
Hi Jill,

On the first point, I have not had a lot of luck changing the preposition from
in to of in the Master Location list and have gone back to in. There
just is no help for it. It is generally understood that of means at some
time the person was located in or associated with the location preceded by the
word of.

On the second point, there is indeed a place called Cherokee, Iowa, and
RootsWeb Townsearch confirms Cherokee, Iowa is in Cherokee County. I didn't go
so far as to research when Cherokee County, Iowa was established. -- Alice

Hi Jill, if I am reading your first question correctly the word of appears
with the address in the location box and you want to get rid of the word
of, if this is the case then you can go to the top of your screen and
select searchsearch and replace, in the find where box click the button
on the right side and scroll down then select Lists-Location; in the Find
What box enter of without the ; in the Replacement Text box leave ths
blank, now click the start button. The search and replace screen will come
up, when is locates a location with the word of in it make sure that the
replacement line reads what you want before you click the replace button
because some locations may start with Of in them, an example is Offaly,
Ireland. You would not want it to read faly, Ireland. I hope this works for
you.

Re: [LegacyUG] U.S. County Verification

2007-05-24 Thread frankanedc
I would not change the Of Cherokee entries just because there was no
county called Of Cherokee. The Of means that the person lived
there at some point, but whether she was born and/or died there was not
known when the entry was made. For instance, you might find a person
on a census record for a particular place, but have no source as to
where she was born or died. For people whose actual place of birth or
death is known, leave out the Of. But if you take it out for across
the board, it degrades the accuracy of the data.

There have been discussions before on trying to change the preposition
in the location list. There doesn't seem to be a good way to do it.

As to the question mark, it probably means that your mother did not have
a source for that location, but thought it was right. Some people enter
Prob Cherokee, when there is some uncertainty about the location.

I would not let the county verification tool or the location list take
over your effort to have a reasonably accurate record.

Re: [LegacyUG] U.S. County Verification

2007-05-24 Thread Jill King
Hi Alice,
I got three responses. Yours was the closest to what I am looking for but not
exactly. I am aware that of means at some point they were there. For
instance, we may not know a person was born in a particular place, but we know
they were from that area. If I put it in as , Of Cherokee, Iowa, shows up on
the County Verifier as not a valid place. Possibly the best thing to do would
be to change it to be of, [county name], state or of , ,[county name],
state to indicate that I do not know the town. Then it would no longer be
listed as an problem in the County Verifier. What do you think?

Regarding my second question. I believe my mother's intention when putting
Cherokee?, Iowa in the location, was that she thought they may have been there,
but wasn't sure. This is the case with several county names (and towns), not
just Cherokee. I used Cherokee as an example. So if you think someone is from
a certain place, but not sure, how is the best way to indicate that in the
location box, so it does not come up as a problem in the County Verifier. Or
is there a better way to indicate you are not sure?

Thank you for your thoughts and assistance.

-- Alice

I have inherited my Mother's genealogy. I have transferred it from PAF to

1)She put Of Cherokee, Iowa or something similar in the location. There is

there is the preposition that you can change in the Master Location List.
Would I make a location titled Prep: Of and then put the location? I am

  2) Other entries she put Cherokee?, Iowa There is not a County called

I appreciate anyone's ideas so I can get this list to a manageable size to work

The best way (and easiest) to change a location is to go to the Master

I hope this works for
you.

I would not change the Of Cherokee entries just because there was no county
called Of Cherokee. The Of means that the person lived there at some
point, but whether she was born and/or died there was not known when the entry
was made. For instance, you might find a person on a census record for a
particular place, but have no source as to where she was born or died. For
people whose actual place of birth or death is known, leave out the Of. But
if you take it out for across the board, it degrades the accuracy of the data.

There have been discussions before on trying to change the preposition in the
location list. There doesn't seem to be a good way to do it.

As to the question mark, it probably means that your mother did not have a
source for that location, but thought it was right. Some people enter Prob
Cherokee, when there is some uncertainty about the location.

I would not let the county verification tool or the location list take over
your effort to have a reasonably accurate record.

I am new enough to Legacy that I haven't done this, but in other programs,
search and replace can generally avoid the fealy, Ireland problem by including
the space in the search box. Or even include the following word, for example
search for [Of Cherokee] and replace with [Cherokee] (brackets for my emphasis).

John,

Displaying 6 additional tags in the Family View simply adds clutter without
function. Secondly, tags are temporary, reusable, definable by the user and
if you made them permanent what happens when you use up the 9 tags? Tags do
not just disappear into thin air it takes a user command to untag anyone in
the file.

Re: [LegacyUG] Notes for Name fields

2007-05-24 Thread Tim Willis
Hi Mike (and list),

I agree that there are times when it seems appropriate to add a note about a
name specifically, and I think this functionality would be good to have.

But in lieu of that, you could add to the General Notes and put a paragraph
about the name. That would come out on the Descendent Narrative report.

Arthur Rogers was known to me as Uncle Stub. I never got an explaination
from others in the family about why he was called Stub, but I suspect the
reason is that there was another Arthur Rogers (who would have been HIS Uncle
Arthur) in the family

Something like that??

Re: [LegacyUG] U.S. County Verification

2007-05-24 Thread Alice McVearry
Hi Jill,

I don't let the County Verifier drive how I enter my place names. In fact
I found it so annyoing I am not using it at all just now. Like you I
inherited someone else's genealogy and there was a lot of what I call
freehand in it, like near Eulala or west of North Platt. Research
has allowed me to pin down some of those broadly brushed locations. In the
meantime I am leaving them just as they were in the original researcher's
notes. Later on when I am more certain of locations I may enlist the help
of the County Verifier.

Your mother did the best she could to assign a location, and if I were you
I would not change that very much. She may have had certain meanings to
how she entered the data. Do you see a pattern in the use of the question
marks, or do you think she just randomly used them to indicate she was
unsure? If you think it is random, then for the time being I would make a
place name called of , , Cherokee, Iowa as you suggested and use that as
the place name for all the uncertain place names of that location,
especially if it is not clear whether she was referring to the town of
Cherokee, or the county of Cherokee. The use of commas as place holders
for the town name will be very useful later on when you begin to make full
use of the Locations Master List. Once you get your data base cleaned up
you can go to work on all those who have been assigned of , , Cherokee,
Iowa or any of the other locations where your mother was unsure.

I absolutely think use of the word of to indicate uncertainty is the way
to go. -- Alice

,[county name], state to indicate that I do not know the town. Then it
would no longer be listed as an problem in the County Verifier. What do
you think?

Regarding my second question. I believe my mother's intention when putting
Cherokee?, Iowa in the location, was that she thought they may have been
there, but wasn't sure. This is the case with several county names (and
towns), not just Cherokee. I used Cherokee as an example. So if you think
someone is from a certain place, but not sure, how is the best way to
indicate that in the location box, so it does not come up as a problem in
the County Verifier. Or is there a better way to indicate you are not sure?

Thank you for your thoughts and assistance.

Subject: [LegacyUG] U.S. County Verification

I have inherited my Mother's genealogy. I have transferred it from PAF to
Legacy and have been working on cleaning it up. In the USA County
Verification, I have 188 pgs. I find that most of the problems are:
1)She put Of Cherokee, Iowa or something similar in the location.
There is no County called Of Cherokee. How is the best way to change
this? I notice there is the preposition that you can change in the Master
Location List. Would I make a location titled Prep: Of and then put the
location? I am concerned if I do this, when look at the person's data, I
won't know if it means In Cherokee or Of Cherokee.

  2) Other entries she put Cherokee?, Iowa There is not a County called
Cherokee?. I am assuming she meant Did they come from Cherokee?
Possibly, but not sure Is there a better way to data input that so it
won't be on the County Verification list?

I appreciate anyone's ideas so I can get this list to a manageable size to
work with.

Thanks,
Jill Kin

I should have stated that I have no intention of making all 9 tags
permanent. I want that to be a user's choice as to whether one or more
tags are made permanent, or later returned to a temporary state. By
mistake one can click Clear All Tag Numbers for Everyone, and then
tags do disappear into thin air.

Re: [LegacyUG] U.S. County Verification

2007-05-24 Thread Sandra Tyler Duncan
This is probably not what you think that you want but here goes anyway. I
once had a pile of pictures to scan into my computer and I actually thought
that I would never get it done but I just started with the first picture and
went at it one by one and in what seemed like 4 short months I was done. I
might add that in October 198 I had a massive stroke that pretty much paralyzed
most of my left side. I never hardly ever give up on things.
Then shortly after I had issues with LEGACY and my computer at least 3
crash times and the locations were in such a mess that I decided to go through
them one by one until all were EXACTLY as I wanted each and every one. I knew
that if I wanted it a certain way, I would have to do it one by one until it
got done it took me six months besides the other non computer stuff that
filled my time, but I now have the perfect location list [[FOR ME]] and I could
not be happier, my motto is whatever it takes.
Hope this helps
Sandra

NOTE: besides curing the OF question for me , I was also able to fix other
errors that any other cure would have missed, you are blessed to have your
mother's genealogy. All of mine is my own creation

2007-05-24 Thread Ann Parsons
Hi Sherry,

I use [for example] probably Oakland County, Michigan [I know they died in
Michigan, and I think probably was in Oakland County]. This triggers the county
verifier. If I was to change the Master Location wouldn't it change everyone
that I know for sure was died , Oakland County, Michigan? I think I once tried
this and that is what happened. I understand I cannot change the preposition to
probably, on that thought changing in to of would that change even those you
wanted left with preposition in? I would, as always, appreciate your thoughts
on this.

The best way (and easiest) to change a location is to go to the Master
Location List (View Master Lists), locate the location that you want to

I hope this works for
  you.

2007-05-24 Thread C.G. Ouimet
I agree that permanency would not be preferrable. But I would like to see
them all. It wouldn't add clutter as there is lot's of space besides the
existing three above the name field. There could be an option to display
none or all and everything in between, perhaps even only the ones in use in
the database.

Re: [LegacyUG] Notes for Name fields

2007-05-24 Thread Mitch Mackrory

Mike,

Since you are talking about variations to names, I use the AKA option. I do
this for any variation to a name and then I add the source for the variation
together with notes in the comments section. It sounds like you want
something different, but that is how I handle it. I agree printing is an
issue with this method.

 Hi Mike (and list),

I agree that there are times when it seems appropriate to add a note about
a name specifically, and I think this functionality would be good to have.

But in lieu of that, you could add to the General Notes and put a
paragraph about the name. That would come out on the Descendent Narrative
report.

Arthur Rogers was known to me as Uncle Stub. I never got an
explaination from others in the family about why he was called Stub, but I
suspect the reason is that there was another Arthur Rogers (who would have
been HIS Uncle Arthur) in the family

Something like that??

Mitch: I do add comments in Source Details, but unless you print all of

Re: [LegacyUG] U.S. County Verification

2007-05-24 Thread Susan Daily

Jill,
After I inherited a genealogy done like that, I moved the of
Placename to a residence event, and did not leave it in the birth or
death fields. This way when I print a report, it shows she lived
there.

For your question mark locations, you might consider doing something
like this. Move the location to a residence event, then edit the
sentence wording for that particular individual's event only to add
the word maybe or probably, so it would say She probably resided
in Placename. If it is a birth location, this is trickier, because
you don't want wrong information perpetuated. Since my whole goal for
my data is to (a) output results to a book and (b) share the basic
data online at Rootsweb's WorldConnect for others to look for
connections, I would probably leave the birth location empty and add a
birth note that would say She was probably born in Placename, but her
birth record has not yet been found. I don't publish my notes to my
Worldconnect tree.

Hope these ideas might get you thinking of other ways to handle the data.

2007-05-24 Thread Mel Morris
I would challenge that they add clutter, they are very very small and there
is lots of room - they show all 9 on the edit screen for the individual. But
of course you are correct, they are not necessarily to be permanent - I
choose to use Tag 1 to represent related' and tag 2 for all my web page
exportees (Tag 1 - Tag 3) (Tag 3 living Tag 1s:-) ) Tag 3 for Privates, and
then I use the rest varibably when I am looking for people who do not appear
in a particular source that should (i.e. alive in 1841 but not noted as
using that source :-))

Works for me anyway, but I'd still like to see them all :-)

Glenn,
I guess I expressed myself rather badly. What I meant was although I would
*never* wish to show nine tags there have been/are occasions when more than
three would be useful. I totally agree about clutter and was really
suggesting a default of three, as now, but with the option of being able to
show one or two more if needed.

Ron,

You can change the tags that are shown on the Family View two ways:

1. On the Menu Bar go to OptionsCustomize, General Tab, and click on
Tags
to Show in the left bottom part of the window. Select the tags you want
to

show.

2. Right click on any of the 3 tag boxes shown in the Family View and you
can change the Tags to Show:.

Hope this helps.

  Hi Jill,

On the first point, I have not had a lot of luck changing the preposition
from in to of in the Master Location list and have gone back to in.
There just is no help for it. It is generally understood that of means at
some time the person was located in or associated with the location preceded
by the word of.

On the second point, there is indeed a place called Cherokee, Iowa, and
RootsWeb Townsearch confirms Cherokee, Iowa is in Cherokee County. I didn't
go so far as to research when Cherokee County, Iowa was established. --

Subject: [LegacyUG] U.S. County Verification

I have inherited my Mother's genealogy. I have transferred it from PAF
to Legacy and have been working on cleaning it up.

  2) Other entries she put Cherokee?, Iowa There is not a County
called Cherokee?. I am assuming she meant Did they come from Cherokee?
Possibly, but not sure Is there a better way to data input that so it
won't be on the County Verification list?

I appreciate anyone's ideas so I can ge this list to a manageable size
to work with.

Thanks,
Jill King

Re: [LegacyUG] Suggestion for future feature amendment

Ron,
You can select 3 different tags to show now, the default is 1, 2 3
but you can show 4, 5 6 or 5, 7 9 or any 3 of them.
Edit Tags Tags to show
Toni

There is no way I would wish to see nine tags on the family view screen,
although I would like some flexibility as to which tags I do show. But not
at the expense of more important changes.

I agree with making 9 visible. Also allow them to be made permanent, by
the user, so they are not erased by accident.

This just reminded me that long ago I wanted to clear mine and could not
find a way to do it...although it's probably easy and I just missed it.
Can

someone give me a hint?
