Barbara,

It is well worth the effort. I have over 23,000 names and bout 2,000

RE: [LegacyUG] Storing Photos

2007-11-18 Thread ronald ferguson

Barbara,

I cannot comment on FTM v Legacy, as apart from creating odd reports I have not
used the former.

1) Yes, Legacy only stores the path and not the picture, hence on export only
the path is sent. Strictly speaking the pictues are, therefore no longer linked
to Legacy on the host PC. There are three ways for the recipient to deal with
this:

a) If the pictures are stored in, say, C:\Legacy\Pictures then if that folder
is sent and installed by the recipient in the same place on their PC it will
work fine without any further action needed.

b) Often, mine included, they are stored in a folder (say LegPics) in My
Documents. My preferred method of exporting these is to use Pando. The
recipient then links his pictures to these by selecting a picture-site in
Legacy and when the pop-up comes up saying picture not found use the Select
by oneself option and click on the picture. All other pictures in that folder
will be linked. If the pictures are split into separate folders it will need to
be done for each folder.

c) If stored as in (b) use the back-up Muluimedia Option and then export/send
this file
and find as in (b)

2) Web Pages: Legacy copies the pictures you have selected into a new folder
together with the html files. This folder then has to be be uploaded onto the
Server on which the files are loaded.

I'm just about ready to order the Deluxe Legacy software--have been using
Family Tree Maker for the past year and input TONS of data into that
program, unfortunately. The training video mentions that the Legacy software
does not store the photo itself, but rather a link to where it is stored on
my computer. Correct? After using FTM, where the software has bogged down
due to photos being stored within the software, I understand the advantage
to this. But, how do the photos remain a part of the file if it is shared
with others? Also, I haven't studied yet on how Legacy allows you to create
a web site and upload to it, but would the photos be a part of what is
 uploaded to a web site?
 Thanks,
 Barbara Ford

At the top of Legacy there is a row of tabs for various facilities which are
available to you. One of them is called Tools. Click on it and you will see

*exactly* what criteria you wish to select by. Please let us know

Tagging: On Family View to tag one person click one of the little boxes

RE: [LegacyUG] Switched over from FTM to Legacy

2007-11-18 Thread George Davidson
Valerie,

I apologize; when I stated Tools I should have said
Features. The combined options such as Tools, View,
Reports, Merge and others all
are great tools to review your data, update and correct any
problems.

Example:
1. Click on View
2. Click on Master Lists
3. Click on Location or Source (there are also other options
listed to choose from)
Now you can view your entered locations or sources, edit
them, merge dupes etc.

Another very useful item:
1. Click on File
2. Click on File Maintenance
Now you have options to check/repair, master list cleanup
(great option).
As always and it is suggested by Legacy during these
options, please backup your file first.

George

RE: [LegacyUG] Switched over from FTM to Legacy

2007-11-18 Thread Linda McCauley
Barbara,
No need to delete your scrapbook items as they will
not be included in the GEDCOM created by FTM anyway.
You will have to manually add your scrapbook items to
your Legacy file.

I'm also in the process of changing over from FTM (v.
16) to Legacy. The clean-up/transition process is
taking some time (because the features in Legacy are
far more advanced than FTM) but I think it's going to
be well worth the time in the long run.

RE: [LegacyUG] Tagging individuals

2007-11-18 Thread Valerie Garton
At last I have found the tagging buttons thanks to Jennifer, Hugh and
Ron.

I must say the help screen does not help in that it does not mention
that you have to turn this function on. What a pity I waisted so much
time printing out the help screens and searching my computer for the tag
buttons. I was beginning to think I had gone mad.

This will also be the reason why Rhonda was having such a problem as
neither of us could find the tagging buttons.

Valerie,

I apologize; when I stated Tools I should have said Features. The
combined options such as Tools, View, Reports, Merge and others all
are great tools to review your data, update and correct any problems.

Example:
1. Click on View
2. Click on Master Lists
3. Click on Location or Source (there are also other options listed to
choose from)
Now you can view your entered locations or sources, edit them, merge
dupes etc.

Another very useful item:
1. Click on File
2. Click on File Maintenance
Now you have options to check/repair, master list cleanup (great
option).
As always and it is suggested by Legacy during these options, please
backup your file first.

I would like one that just prints out the birthdays and anniversaries

[LegacyUG] The wonders of laptops

2007-11-18 Thread Kathy Shiell-Stokes

Valerie.
Assuming that your laptop is not equipped to go onto the internet
perhaps having it handy while you are on the net would be helpful.
One of the nice things about laptops is that they are so portable and
some of them even have batteries and can run with always being
plugged in...assuming that you aren't expecting them to run 24 /7.
From the dialogue you've been carrying on I am betting that if you
had it handy while following up on the tips generated by this group
that you would likely get the answers you seek in about half the
time...which would give you even more time to come up with questions
that leave the rest of us scratching our heads...wondering where you
dream them up. I do have to say though that they force the rest
of to stop short and think about just what we are doing. Keep 'em coming.
The other idea would be to equip your laptop to go onto the internet
so you could have everything all on one computer...They have these
things called modems and wifi cardsand some even have gps.!
I keep dreaming about how I might record all that wonderful info in
Legacy if only I had a suitably equipped laptop. Oh to dream

 Valerie,

I understood that, but *how* are you selecting the ones to add - by age,
place of birth, surname, first name, date of death etc etc etc. Without
this information one cannot help properly.

Re: Tagging please have a look at http://www.fergys.co.uk/jhn.html I
have ringed the boxes concerned. If they don't show on your own screen
then go to OptionsCustomiseGeneral and set the button on the bottom
 left.

 Valerie,

It is not really possible to answer your question without knowing
*exactly* what criteria you wish to select by. Please let us know
otherwise any help would be strictly limited.

Tagging: On Family View to tag one person click one of the little
boxes in the panel above the name. To tag more than one right click on

one of the boxes and make your selection from the options available.

I am trying to create a gedcom file from some of the entries in my
CULLODEN file to export to my IndiaCULLODEN file.

I have read the help file on tagging BUT I can not find where the
 tags

 are ?

Also is this the best way to go about selecting my records for this
 purpose.

Simple instructions would be very much appreciated. Pretend I am 2
years old OH NO that is probably not a good idea as a 2 year old
 could

 probably work it out.

 OK I am 70 and stupid ?

 Hi Sharon,
Is the only style for the birthday calendar a page by page calendar
that looks like the type you hang on a wall?

I would like one that just prints out the birthdays and anniversaries
in a list format. I think I had this capability with the old Family
Roots. I have the previous version of FTM - maybe that does it?

 Thanks,

Re: [LegacyUG] The wonders of laptops

2007-11-18 Thread John Carter
 Valerie.
Assuming that your laptop is not equipped to go onto the internet
perhaps having it handy while you are on the net would be helpful.

This does assume that you have space for more than one display + keyboard
- not always the case when you're surrounded by paper or sitting in front
of a microfilm reader - the *laptop* part of the name becomes a necessity
at most of the microfilm reader stations I've seen :-( The pages that
don't print legibly in a couple of attempts can be transcribed to the
laptop and emailed to yourself as a backup (if the location provides
internet access - see below).

Valerie has gotten people to think about *how* they do what they do - it's
so much easier to *do* something than to explain it to someone else (been
there; done that - corporate technical trainer for several years).

The other idea would be to equip your laptop to go onto the internet
so you could have everything all on one computer...They have these
things called modems and wifi cardsand some even have gps.!

Having a network card in the laptop is most convenient when researching at
a library that provides internet access to their patrons/visitors. In the
past six months, I've found wireless access in one public library (Cobb
County, Georgia, card holders only) and wireless + wired access in another
(Memphis, Tennessee, visitors also allowed).

I keep dreaming about how I might record all that wonderful info in
Legacy if only I had a suitably equipped laptop. Oh to dream
   Kathy

Older laptops (Pentium II/III) can be found at computer shows and in yard
sales for $30-$50US (and up). The biggest downside to in-your-lap
operation is that the battery needs to be replaced every 2-3 years (Ebay
prices start about $60US delivered - with a new battery, I get 3 to 3.5
hours of unplugged operation). If you know someone who works at a company
that replaces computers every few years, you *might* find a deal there (a
typical price is the current average Ebay price of that model). The
laptop I'm using (pentium 4 equivalent) is 5 years old (ancient by current
standards), but is adequate for what I do: two lines in Legacy, one about
4000 names, the other about 6000 names.

RE: [LegacyUG] Re: Calenders was [Holiday Reports]

2007-11-18 Thread ronald ferguson

Actually, Susan you can, but it is a bit of a fiddle.

I use another program called paperless printer (Can't remember the URL so you
need to Google) this enables one to copy to file in many formats including txt,
rtf, jpeg pdf etc.

It works as a printer (but to file) so it is necessary to set paperless printer
as your default printer and then click the Print button and choose your format.

Re: [LegacyUG] picctures

2007-11-18 Thread Cathy

Hi Winifred,

I've only played with the photo albums as I'm not one for printing
much out and prefer to use another program to produce photos on CDs
that can be viewed by family.

I have used the Slider Show at Family Reunions.

I've thought about, but haven't actually implemented, the idea of
having an unlinked dummy person called Interesting Sources Surname
to attach representative sources to. These could be produced as a
Photo Album and included in a book made in the Publication centre. I
think this is the only way to get most source pics at a readable size
as well as not breaking copyright for the many sources we download.
For example, somewhere I got the idea that you couldn't print all the
census images you used but it was OK to print one or two.

Cheers,
Cathy

Hi Gary,

I think this has been reported.
Until it is fixed, you should be able to correct the Gedcom by
looking for the 2 CONT's and changing the number to the correct number.
A Gedcom is just a plain text file in a particular format so can be
opened in any text editor, like Notepad.

text has a carriage return to create a new paragraph. Everything after that
return gets dropped so the notes in PAF end up incomplete. Some are for RINs
and some for MRINs which also have notes.

Since the original data came from PAF one would think it should go back into
PAF with no errors.

There is also a second group of errors that reads as follows

ERROR 10: Individual 'I33' referenced undefined note 'NO'.
ERROR 11: Individual 'I40' referenced undefined note 'NO'.

I DO want to include the notes when I send the gedcom. He happens to be

If you are wanting data in Excel, you are going to the wrong place.
Tag the relevant people and then go to the Name List and show that
tagged group and use the Print options. Choose the data you want to
use and then

Save to csv file and open that in Excel.

delete, or would like to delete all the ancestors of that person, for
example, what's the best way to do that?

Re: [LegacyUG] I need some help with the merge feature

2007-11-18 Thread Cathy

Hi Michele,

1) Make a normal backup of your family file and call it family
filename before merge date eg Smith before merge 20071119
This is so you can play with the merge quite happily knowing that you
can restore this file and get back to exactly where you were before
you started playing.

BTW To learn features it's a good idea to have a test file. You can
use the Sample file but I find it easier to have one that I'm more
familiar with. My test file began with a section of my tree that I'm
familiar with but with major surnames changed so that it's obvious
I'm dealing with my test file. eg I've changed my maiden surname of
Clark to Scotland because they emigrated from Scotland.

2) Don't bother about the options that are first presented until
you're more familiar with merging. Just use the defaults and click Continue

3) On the merge screen when two people are presented, you always end
by merging the right person into the left person. That is the
resulting person will have the RIN of the current person on the left.
If this happens currently to be the higher RIN, you may wish to swap
the people over. Otherwise swap the person with the best or most
information to the left.

3) You choose which bits of information are kept, which bits are
discarded or saved in a different place.
If you have different birth dates or places, you click the radio
button of the one you want to make the birth date and place. Then you
have the option to ignore the other date or make it an Alt Birth
event or put it in General Notes. You access these options by
clicking the black square next to the label after you've put the
radio button next to the one you want to be the main choice.

On the Event Tab, you have the option of copying a highlighted event
for the right person to the left person. You can also edit events.
On the Notes Tab, you can edit notes or add the notes from the right
person to the notes of the left person (append) or replace the notes
on the left with the notes on the right. Remember in the end the
right person is merged to the left.

Once you've looked at all the information and made your choices, you
click the merge right into left person button.

and on to the next person.

Hope that helps but really the only thing that clarifies is trying it
out. You make that try out stress free by having good backups so it
doesn't matter how many mistakes you make while you're learning how it works.

Re: [LegacyUG] Search

2007-11-18 Thread Cathy

Hi Barbara,
It's hard to say.
Which type of search are you using?

I usually use the Detailed search.
On that you have to make sure you are searching the correct field in
the right way.
For example, if I want to find all the Ebenezer's in my file, I need
to make sure that I'm searching in Given Names and that I'm using a
contains search and not equals search.
An equals search will find people called Ebenezer but not people
called John Ebenezer.

A contains search finds both of them.

If you are using the Query by Example search form, take a look at the
radio buttons at the bottom and choose the relevant one - exact,
starts with, anywhere in the field.

The detailed search is very powerful when you get used to the
combinations but perhaps you need to become more familiar with the
different fields and what they contain first.

Re: [LegacyUG] Another merge question

2007-11-18 Thread Cathy

1) Did it find any duplicates?

2) How have you checked that there are no Tag 9's?
You could do a Detailed Search for Individuals with Tag 9 equal to tagged.
You could make sure that Tag 9 is one of the 3 tags marked for
display on the screens and then use the Name List - Search - Tag 9

If neither of those help - we need more information on what you did.

Re: [LegacyUG] Errors in GEDCOM export.

2007-11-18 Thread Gary Templeman
Thanks. I can do that with a search and replace. I am also going through and
removing extraneous items in the notes that got stuffed in there from a
previous import (listing file errors that were placed in the notes). It is
tedious to check every marriage and individual in an almost 5000 person
database so I tried opening a copy of the database in Access to see if I
could edit just the notes directly but could not locate them. If anyone has
a suggestion for that I would appreciate it.

Hi Gary,

I think this has been reported.
Until it is fixed, you should be able to correct the Gedcom by looking for
the 2 CONT's and changing the number to the correct number.
A Gedcom is just a plain text file in a particular format so can be opened
in any text editor, like Notepad.

Cheers,
Cathy

I have also noticed a similar thing with the notes.
I believe that Legacy may have a problem here.

I am testing an export to send to a cousin. My Legacy file was

PAF

5 format option. When I import that GED into PAF, there are thousands of
errors related to the notes. An example message is ERROR 5: test.GED,
line

1567: RIN 62: Level number '2' for CONT is not the same as the preceding
line. Examination shows that it occurs whenever there is a note where
the
text has a carriage return to create a new paragraph. Everything after
that
return gets dropped so the notes in PAF end up incomplete. Some are for
RINs

and some for MRINs which also have notes.

Since the original data came from PAF one would think it should go back
into

PAF with no errors.

There is also a second group of errors that reads as follows

ERROR 10: Individual 'I33' referenced undefined note 'NO'.
ERROR 11: Individual 'I40' referenced undefined note 'NO'.

and so on.

I DO want to include the notes when I send the gedcom. He happens to be
using Reunion on a Mac, so I was using PAF as my test vehicle thinking
it

should be the most generic option, AND as I said, the original data came
from PAF. Any fixes out there to get him a clean GEDCOM? I am using
the

latest Legacy build.

Re: [LegacyUG] I need some help with the merge feature

2007-11-18 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
Save first as recommended. When the first merge
choice comes up, there are a few choices of what to.
Are they definitely the same person, do this. I like
to put the lower RIN on the left. Go to General. Use
Click right or left option. If each version has
different events; A has 1900 census and B has 1896 Tax
List. go to the * tab, which shows both groups.
Copy Right All to Left. When everything is moved over,
choose Merge Right into left.
If not the same person, Choose Skip to Next.
If unsure, Choose Skip to Next, and come back for
further research later. It will remember the list
until told to forget the rest.
Good luck. Rich in LA CA

Notes of varying kinds and much other information attached to
individuals are in the tblIR table - keep scrolling to the the right
hand columns and eventually you'll reach Notes/Reference (Research
notes)/Medical ...
