Re: [LegacyUG] Descendant Report
Sorry, that's the one - Descendant Book Report. I've reset the report options with no change except of course now the source numbers are consecutive instead of the same source number when the source is repeated within the report, so I've got 170,000 sources instead of just under 600 sources listed. I had generated the original report before Ver. 7 came out but didn't start working on it until just recently. I hate to gedcom my database into Family Tree Maker because not everything transfers correctly. I'm not all that good at computer stuff. I wish I knew when the next update was going to come out. Some of this hopefully will get fixed. Kevin, I will be happy to pass along anything I learn about available applications for the iPhone. I started out with Palm devices so long ago that I've stuck with GEDStar Pro, and done beta work for them. The iTouch was purchased for another purpose. The Cli is getting a bit long in the tooth, and I have been moving much of what I carry to the iTouch as an alternative, and am doing beta testing for Astraware, having done that for their Palm-based software for some time now. If the Cli gives out I'll be able to justify a Windows Mobile device, and then I will be a happy customer of yours. Incidentally, the only genealogy application that I know of for the iPone/iPod Touch platform is MobileFmilyTree, which sells via the Apple iTunes App Store. The program is offered by Synium Software GmbH in both English and German, but requires that you also have a licensed version of their Mac program, MacFamilyTree, which means you must be running a MacIntosh PC. I try and keep track of what software is available for each of the platforms and we keep a list on our website as a courtesy for people who dont have a Windows Mobile device. If you do hear of anything else please let us know so we can update the information. http://www.northernhillssoftware.com/EN/Marketing/competition.htm We actually get a fair number of emails asking about Blackberry devices, for example, but as far as we know there is nothing available. With the SourceWriter, is there a way to eliminate n.p., n.d. etc that appear in source output for footnote/endnote and bibliography (preview and report) when you have elected to not fill in some of the fields in the source input screen, particularly with the generic ones. I presume n.p. = no publisher and n.d. = no date but I would prefer that they did not appear in the output. Some more points about accessing Legacy data on a network. The shared drive or the Legacy folder on that drive should be mapped as the SAME drive letter on all the machines. This doesn't appear to work if I am doing it right. If I select marriage records I then have the option of church records, government records or frakturs. The church records and government records only break down into certificates, transcriptions, registers or books. Nothing for online sources. That brings me to the Frakturs that I mentioned in the original e-mail which has online options (online database for example). Is this what people are doing though? I deleted the Descend.usr file and recreated the 17 chapter book. This is how one of the chapters reads: 1125. Julia Patricia Dodaro Julia Patricia married Mauro Ongaro Children from this marriage were: 736 F i. Bianca Julia Ongaro (born 1998) 737 F ii. Alexa Maura Ongaro (born 2002) Going backward in the chapter to 736 and 737, this is what it reads: 736. Francesco Pasquale Michele Falsetti (born 1879) 737. Francesco Carmine Falsetti (born 1882) Neither of these people are direct ancestors of Julia, Bianca or Alexa. The children should have numbers higher than the father. I think my only hope to create this book for my cousin is to uninstall Ver 7 and download Ver. 6. I read the instructions for Downloads, under B. Tom, On each report for which you want to save the settings Click the Save button on the report screen once you are happy with all the settings. A mini browser will open and you change change the location of the saved file to your USB drive using the Save In box at the top of the screen. When you want to repeat a report using those settings use the load button and retrieve the settings file from the USB drive on the computer you are using at the time. NOTE: Those load and save buttons on the report screen only save the report settings, they do not save or load a copy of the report. RE: [LegacyUG] new.familysearch.org
There will be in the near future. We are one of the approved affiliates and have been working with the Church helping test and develop the new API. We are working very hard on new Family Search integration and have some very cool features coming that will really make it easy for users. Legacy will be among the first programs to become certified to work with New Family Search. There are about 10 different areas of certification to be able to work with the NFS. Some of the smaller genealogy products might only need to be certified in 4 or 5 areas to be working with NFS. Legacy needs to be in all of the areas because we are a bigger or a complete genealogy program. Thanks for using Legacy. Re: [LegacyUG] Am I suscribed or not? and how do/did I do it or undo it?
This is the first message I have noticed of yours in plain text. I saw one earlier with blue large letters, implying html, but I didn't check it out. As far as I know, the LDS is opening up the various portions of the NewFamilySearch by groups and locations of searchers. The first ones were (my guess) previously registered users (mostly, not totally LDS). I don't know the criterion they are using, and I don't need to know. I think they are being cautious in opening up their services and will be fully operational 'soon'. For myself, I am waiting until it is open to me (and all of the rest of us) before seeing how it will work. I know Geoff and gang were in on the creation of the NewFS, so I expect there will be ways to do what you want. I am as anxious as the rest to see and use the new tool. I think that is a part of your servers job. This is the culling service which 'avoids' spam, and (some people have this, but not me), splitting the 'good stuff' to various 'categories'. This is not the task of the User Group, but is a good question none the less. you need to contact 'twmi.rr.com' directly and ask them. Re: [LegacyUG] ... usergroup message handling ... Jim Hughes
That depends entirely on the mail program you are using. Eudora allows you to specify where messages go based on sender, subject, etc, in various combinations. If you include a unique word/phrase (i.e., JIMH) in the subject line, then those messages could be placed in a specific folder (i.e., MyLegacy) and anything else from the LUG could be put in the trash. Doing that also means that you will miss any follow-up messages with a different subject line and all hannuncements from Legacy because they won't have that word/prase in the subject. Pegasus mail allows you to retrieve just the headers (Subject From) and determine which messages to download and which to delete. This ensures you will see all the subject lines but will only need to download the items of interest. Pegasus is free; Eudora has a free version. Neither is targeted for malware as Outlook and Outlook Express are. John Good Day... Is there a way for me to only receive email 'replies' relative to my email post thread? With vers 7 Legacy gave us C:\Legacy\Docs\ and I have been migrating from MM to Docs folder. I do frequent checks of CustomizeOptionsLocationsTest all MM locations. Re: [LegacyUG] ... Legacy 7, file/folder sharing ... Jim Hughes
Brian, Your solution doesn't seem to work. The book setings have been saved on the USB drive from the desktop. Those settings do not load from the USB when it is inserted into the laptop. The family file is visible and usable from the USB, but the book settings saved on the USB aren't loading even though I see the book files there when I explore the USB drive. - Original Message - From: Brian/Support [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com Sent: Monday, August 18, 2008 10:08 AM Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] ... Legacy 7, file/folder sharing ... Jim Hughes Tom, On each report for which you want to save the settings Click the Save button on the report screen once you are happy with all the settings. The files are on a USB hard drive or memory stick which is moved from PC to PC. The other two options require having a home network and remembering one key restriction - Legacy does *not* have a multi-user daabase. 2. One PC is *always* on. The folder containing Legacy is shared on the network and all computers use it - but ONLY ONE PC AT A TIME. This PC should have a UPS adequate to keep it running long enough for a proper shutdown; most UPS units come with software that can read the status of the unit and shutdown the PC. 3. You have a network-enabled hard drive that is always on an can be accessed by the computers on the network - again ONLY ONE PC AT A TIME. The network drive unit should have a UPS and be able to be shutdown by the UPS just as a PC would be. Re: [LegacyUG] Most used narrative reports
To get back to the original point (at least I hope I'm right that these comments may be helpful), I find that the only way to include all the sometimes rather distant descendants of interesting ancestors is to use the 'multiple lines of descent' report. To help with creating this, I title the 'head' of each interesting line 'Old Father XX'. Then I can click in the name list in the given names, and all the 'Old Father's come up together, from which I can note the RINs, for use in the order I choose in the report. The only snag is that although one may check the 'don't repeat duplicate lines' box, this is unreliable. Any help with what triggers the 'duplicate line' would be much appreciated. Ruth it is my understanding that you cannot go back to previous versions with the fdb file once upgraded and used in a newer version. If you create a GEDCOM export, you should be able to open it in version 6 or earlier, but not the actual legacy database. So please be sure to GEDCOM ALL of your active files prior to reverting to an older version. Gary Templeman -- Original message -- From: Jim Hughes [EMAIL PROTECTED] Good Day... Is there a way for me to only receive email 'replies' relative to my email post thread? [LegacyUG] Location List
I'm trying to create a location list. To set all the geolocations, I had to add . . .London, England' etc. to long names of many places, because otherwise Legacy kept finding the North American equivalents. So I want to use the short names without the long names. But when I create the list, each line literally says Name: (short= Sevenoaks, Kent) where Sevenoaks, Kent is the short name. Is it possible to remove the (short= etc.? Sure, but how would a computer know if you were interested in a particular message? I've learned a lot from this list from those answering questions I hadn't thought to ask. Re: [LegacyUG] Descendant Report
Since the Descendant Report doesn't work, I thought I'd try the Ancestor Report. The Title of the report is Descendants of (Name). Shouldn't it say Ancestors of (Name)? I wonder if I should uninstall Ver. 7 and reinstall it? I'm sure those folks who've been waiting for Legacy to come out in German and Swedish are now delighted, but I for one wish the English version was bug-free. I've been trying to patient but this is getting ridiculous. I've looked at uninstalling ver. 7 and downloading ver 6 but the instructions look difficult.
