There's nothing I can find that's called Descendant Report. There's a
Descendants Book Report and there's a Descendant Chart. When all else
fails, you can try resetting the report options. Bottom right corner.
It's not all that much fun when you have all your options set the way
you want them, but it might help.

Sorry, that's the one - Descendant Book Report. I've reset the report
options with no change except of course now the source numbers are
consecutive instead of the same source number when the source is repeated
within the report, so I've got 170,000 sources instead of just under 600
sources listed. I had generated the original report before Ver. 7 came out
but didn't start working on it until just recently. I hate to gedcom my
database into Family Tree Maker because not everything transfers correctly.
I'm not all that good at computer stuff. I wish I knew when the next update

seeing the problem. Can you send a screenshot to my personal address of
where it shows you as 85 or 86, I've forgotten what it is, just enough
that I can see the numbers. And then further down where it shows 85
or 86 being some-one else?

Re: [LegacyUG] Portable genealogy

Kevin,

I will be happy to pass along anything I learn about available
applications for the iPhone. I started out with Palm devices so long
ago that I've stuck with GEDStar Pro, and done beta work for them. The
iTouch was purchased for another purpose. The Cli is getting a bit
long in the tooth, and I have been moving much of what I carry to the
iTouch as an alternative, and am doing beta testing for Astraware,
having done that for their Palm-based software for some time now. If
the Cli gives out I'll be able to justify a Windows Mobile device, and
then I will be a happy customer of yours.

Incidentally, the only genealogy application that I know of for the
iPone/iPod Touch platform is MobileFmilyTree, which sells via the Apple
iTunes App Store. The program is offered by Synium Software GmbH in
both English and German, but requires that you also have a licensed
version of their Mac program, MacFamilyTree, which means you must be
running a MacIntosh PC.

I'm working on the 'latest' copy of the file.

4. So, I want to 'share' Legacy, but, do not know the steps for doing such.

5. Would some kind soul walk me through the process?

6. Four computers have XP Home, OE 7; the fifth computer has Vista Home

Thanks for your time consideration.

I've said before I'm attempting to create a Descendant Report for a cousin.
Her parents were cousins; there are many marriages in both sides of the
family where the persons are related. I've encountered two problems.

As the report is being generated, I get a window that says:
 Marriage of XXX and YYY
This marriage has now been processed 3 times.
You could be in an endless loop.
Please note this MRIN ### so you can check into it later.
 Continue Processing
 Cancel the Report

I've created this report many times in previous Versions but since Version
7, I get this message. The Help screen says to click the Report Options
button on the menu and select the Don't Repeat Duplicate Lines option on the
 Format tab.

This feature Don't Repeat Duplicate Lines is grayed out in the Descendant
Report so I can't select it.

I don't really know what problems this is creating, but I also have this
 problem:

In one chapter, the Father is no. 73. Under him are his children, no.'s 85
and 86. So if I look at 85 and 86 they are for different people. This report
has 17 chapters. This happens in over half the chapters; the other chapters,
they are numbered correctly. I'm using the same Report Options for each
 chapter.

Has anyone else had these problems?

Maybe the number difference is due to different lines arriving at the same
point. Are you listed as a different number somewhere else in the chart?
Have you tracked backwards to No. 102 to see how it gets to you later?

I wasn't clear on the second point. If my Dad is No. 73 and under him I'm

all the information about me - marriage, children, etc. and the same for
86, my sister, but when I look at 85, it's somebody else and I'm later on

Ruth,

I cannot see, in Descendant Book Report, the option to consolidate Sources, so
I cannot understand why your number of sources has changed.

It seems that some files may be corrupted. I would delete Descend.usr. You
could also try FileFile maintenanceCheck Repair.

I'm afraid you will have to redo all your settings for this report.

Ruth,

I cannot see, in Descendant Book Report, the option to consolidate Sources,
so I cannot understand why your number of sources has changed.

It seems that some files may be corrupted. I would delete Descend.usr. You

I'm afraid you will have to redo all your settings for this report.

I hate to gedcom my
database into Family Tree Maker because not everything transfers
correctly.
I'm not all that good at computer stuff. I wish I knew when the next

There's nothing I can find that's called Descendant Report. There's a
Descendants Book Report and there's a Descendant Chart. When all else
fails, you can try resetting the report options. Bottom right corner.
It's not all that much fun when you have all your options set the way you
want them, but it might help.

Re: [LegacyUG] ... Legacy 7, file/folder sharing ... Jim Hughes

2008-08-18 Thread Brian/Support

Some more points about accessing Legacy data on a network. The shared
drive or the Legacy folder on that drive should be mapped as the SAME
drive letter on all the machines.

Legacy uses explicit paths rather than relative paths to store links to
multimedia files. The paths to multimedia files must be the same i.e.
Z:\Legacy\Pictures etc. on all the machines or one or more computers
will not be able to find the files.

The file linking for multimedia files in Legacy will only see local
drives, a mapped network drive will appear but not a location in Windows

2. One PC is *always* on. The folder containing Legacy is shared on the
network and all computers use it - but ONLY ONE PC AT A TIME. This PC
should have a UPS adequate to keep it running long enough for a proper
shutdown; most UPS units come with software that can read the status of
the unit and shutdown the PC.

Each computer can either use the files on the shared drive or you can copy

Regardless of the option used, always make a backup of the changed files
on the computer you used to make changes. This ensures that you have a
backup of the most current data if something happens to the shared copy.
This is especially important with always on devices because they will

likely fail sooner than the devices which see interittent use.

Carl,

The export of invisible people to a GEDCOM is a problem that has been
recorded in our bug tracking system. The programmer has reported it
fixed but the fix still needs to be tested.

You should update to the latest version 7.0.0.55 dated 13 Jul 2008 even
though that version does not include the fix for the export problem.

RE: [LegacyUG] Sourcing the IGI

2008-08-18 Thread Gavin Nicholson
This doesn't appear to work if I am doing it right. If I select marriage
records I then have the option of church records, government records or
frakturs. The church records and government records only break down into
certificates, transcriptions, registers or books. Nothing for online
sources. That brings me to the Frakturs that I mentioned in the original
e-mail which has online options (online database for example).

Is this what people are doing though? Is there a best practice when it comes
to quoting the IGI? Should I just select InternetDatabase and be done with
it?!

I use a USB drive for the purpose of using Legacy on both my desktop and
laptop. However, the book formats for several families which I created on
the desktop are not there when I use the laptop even though a lot of book
files do show up when I explore the USB drive. I am also able to access
the files on my desktop wirelessly but the book files are not there when I
try to use them on my laptop.

It would be very helpful if somoene could list the steps required to insure
that book settings are properly saved to the USB drive and are available on
the laptop either directly from the USB drive or wirelessly.

FYI - The desktop uses WindowsXP and the laptop uses Vista.

Re: [LegacyUG] Descendant Report

2008-08-18 Thread Ruth Nerud
I deleted the Descend.usr file and recreated the 17 chapter book. This is
how one of the chapters reads:

1125. Julia Patricia Dodaro
Julia Patricia married Mauro Ongaro
Children from this marriage were:
736 F i. Bianca Julia Ongaro (born 1998)
737 F ii. Alexa Maura Ongaro (born 2002)

Going backward in the chapter to 736 and 737, this is what it reads:
736. Francesco Pasquale Michele Falsetti (born 1879)
737. Francesco Carmine Falsetti (born 1882)
Neither of these people are direct ancestors of Julia, Bianca or Alexa.

The children should have numbers higher than the father.

I think my only hope to create this book for my cousin is to uninstall Ver 7
and download Ver. 6. I read the instructions for Downloads, under B. It
looks very scary but I don't think I have a choice. I will backup my files
before I uninstall Ver. 7 and hope I know what I'm doing in making a gedcom
to get the family data back to Ver. 6. This is very disturbing.

Re: [LegacyUG] Descendant Report

2008-08-18 Thread Ellaine Goodall

Ruth and Group:
Could you please tell me how I access the the option to have same source
numbers when the source is repeated within a report rather than a separate
number for each source cited (at the end of a report). I am using the
descendent narrative under books option on Legacy 6.0

Many thanks

Sorry, that's the one - Descendant Book Report. I've reset the report
options with no change except of course now the source numbers are
consecutive instead of the same source number when the source is repeated
within the report, so I've got 170,000 sources instead of just under 600
sources listed. I had generated the original report before Ver. 7 came out
but didn't start working on it until just recently. I hate to gedcom my
database into Family Tree Maker because not everything transfers
correctly. I'm not all that good at computer stuff. I wish I knew when the
next update was going to come out. Some of this hopefully will get fixed.

I deleted the Descend.usr file and recreated the 17 chapter book. This is
how one of the chapters reads:

1125. Julia Patricia Dodaro
Julia Patricia married Mauro Ongaro
Children from this marriage were:
736 F i. Bianca Julia Ongaro (born 1998)
737 F ii. Alexa Maura Ongaro (born 2002)

Going backward in the chapter to 736 and 737, this is what it reads:
736. Francesco Pasquale Michele Falsetti (born 1879)
737. Francesco Carmine Falsetti (born 1882)
Neither of these people are direct ancestors of Julia, Bianca or Alexa.

The children should have numbers higher than the father.

I think my only hope to create this book for my cousin is to uninstall Ver
7 and download Ver. 6. I read the instructions for Downloads, under B. It
looks very scary but I don't think I have a choice. I will backup my files
before I uninstall Ver. 7 and hope I know what I'm doing in making a
gedcom to get the family data back to Ver. 6. This is very disturbing.

2008-08-18 Thread Brian/Support

Tom,

On each report for which you want to save the settings Click the Save
button on the report screen once you are happy with all the settings. A
mini browser will open and you change change the location of the saved
file to your USB drive using the Save In box at the top of the screen.

When you want to repeat a report using those settings use the load
button and retrieve the settings file from the USB drive on the computer
you are using at the time.

NOTE: Those load and save buttons on the report screen only save the
report settings, they do not save or load a copy of the report.

There is a recorded problem with printing and the Title page being on

Re: [LegacyUG] Report wording

2008-08-18 Thread Brian/Support
The sentence is on the Wording 1 Tab of the Report Screen. Whatever
change you make though will apply to all marriages. Legacy does not test
if the couple and/or children are living when writing the report.

RE: [LegacyUG] new.familysearch.org

2008-08-18 Thread Sherry/Support
There will be in the near future. We are one of the approved affiliates and
have been working with the Church helping test and develop the new API. We
are working very hard on new Family Search integration and have some very
cool features coming that will really make it easy for users. Legacy will
be among the first programs to become certified to work with New Family
Search.

There are about 10 different areas of certification to be able to work with
the NFS. Some of the smaller genealogy products might only need to be
certified in 4 or 5 areas to be working with NFS. Legacy needs to be in all
of the areas because we are a bigger or a complete genealogy program.

Thanks for using Legacy.

2008-08-18 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
This is the first message I have noticed of yours in
plain text. I saw one earlier with blue large letters,
implying html, but I didn't check it out.
As far as I know, the LDS is opening up the various
portions of the NewFamilySearch by groups and
locations of searchers. The first ones were (my guess)
previously registered users (mostly, not totally LDS).
I don't know the criterion they are using, and I don't
need to know. I think they are being cautious in
opening up their services and will be fully
operational 'soon'.
For myself, I am waiting until it is open to me (and
all of the rest of us) before seeing how it will work.
I know Geoff and gang were in on the creation of the
NewFS, so I expect there will be ways to do what you
want. I am as anxious as the rest to see and use the
new tool.

Re: [LegacyUG] ... usergroup message handling ... Jim Hughes

2008-08-18 Thread John Carter
That depends entirely on the mail program you are using.

Eudora allows you to specify where messages go based on sender, subject,
etc, in various combinations. If you include a unique word/phrase (i.e.,
JIMH) in the subject line, then those messages could be placed in a
specific folder (i.e., MyLegacy) and anything else from the LUG could be
put in the trash. Doing that also means that you will miss any follow-up
messages with a different subject line and all hannuncements from Legacy
because they won't have that word/prase in the subject.

Pegasus mail allows you to retrieve just the headers (Subject From) and
determine which messages to download and which to delete. This ensures
you will see all the subject lines but will only need to download the
items of interest.

Pegasus is free; Eudora has a free version. Neither is targeted for
malware as Outlook and Outlook Express are.

I also noticed a similar wierdness. I had my event source pictures and
documents in subfolders under C:\Legacy\MM\. With vers 7 Legacy gave us
C:\Legacy\Docs\ and I have been migrating from MM to Docs folder. I do
frequent checks of CustomizeOptionsLocationsTest all MM locations.
Sometimes these MM files are not found to be missing after I moved them. I
can click on them and they come up when it seems they should not. I delete
these vapor linked documents and re-attach them properly.

Brian,

Your solution doesn't seem to work. The book setings have been saved on the
USB drive from the desktop. Those settings do not load from the USB when it
is inserted into the laptop. The family file is visible and usable from the
USB, but the book settings saved on the USB aren't loading even though I see
the book files there when I explore the USB drive.

Tom,

On each report for which you want to save the settings Click the Save
button on the report screen once you are happy with all the settings. A
mini browser will open and you change change the location of the saved
file to your USB drive using the Save In box at the top of the screen.

When you want to repeat a report using those settings use the load button
and retrieve the settings file from the USB drive on the computer you are
using at the time.

NOTE: Those load and save buttons on the report screen only save the
report settings, they do not save or load a copy of the report.

There are three common options for sharing Legacy files among multiple
computers.

1. The files are on a USB hard drive or memory stick which is moved
from

The other two options require having a home network and remembering one
key restriction - Legacy does *not* have a multi-user daabase.

2. One PC is *always* on. The folder containing Legacy is shared on
the

network and all computers use it - but ONLY ONE PC AT A TIME. This PC
should have a UPS adequate to keep it running long enough for a proper
shutdown; most UPS units come with software that can read the status of
the unit and shutdown the PC.

3. You have a network-enabled hard drive that is always on an can be
accessed by the computers on the network - again ONLY ONE PC AT A TIME.
The network drive unit should have a UPS and be able to be shutdown by
the

UPS just as a PC would be.

Each computer can either use the files on the shared drive or you can
copy

the network files to the computer at which you are working and copy it
back to the network drive when you finish.

Regardless of the option used, always make a backup of the changed
files

on the computer you used to make changes. This ensures that you have a
backup of the most current data if something happens to the shared
copy. This is especially important with always on devices because
they will

likely fail sooner than the devices which see interittent use.

Gavin,

Apologies for the delay in coming back to you but I had to go out this
afternoon.

We seem to be at cross-purposes. ViewMaster ListsSourcesADD takes you to the
Source Creation Screen entering marriages England in the yop Searcg Box
brings up a screen for you to select the details you wish to have in the Master
Source.

Source Detail is then added when you choose to add the Source is from the event.

Yoy can also check Marriage Records from the text box and by making your
selection you can also find the templates which you are looking for - including
Family Search

This doesn't appear to work if I am doing it right. If I select marriage
records I then have the option of church records, government records or
frakturs. The church records and government records only break down into
certificates, transcriptions, registers or books. Nothing for online
sources. That brings me to the Frakturs that I mentioned in the original

Is this what people are doing though? Is there a best practice when it comes
to quoting the IGI? Should I just select InternetDatabase and be done with
 it?!

 Hello again listers!

Thanks for all the help so far and sorry if this has been asked before
 but
 I
have scoured Google, looked at the examples on the Legacy website (which
appear to refer to a previous edition) and looked at the sample file
 with
 Legacy 7.0 to no avail.

I am just after the best way to Source the IGI. When I select Internet
there is a message in RED that says I should select the type of record I
want. If I select a marriage record then the best thing to select to get
 an
online option is Fraktur. I don't even know what a Fraktur is!!

 Looking forward to your thoughts!
 Gavin...

[LegacyUG] Source Options Screen in Publishing Center

2008-08-18 Thread Thomas Herson
The Source Options Screen in the Publishing Center is not the same on my
laptop using Vista as it is on my desktop using XP.

The XP Source Options screen has the option of Print Bibliography as the
last indented item under Print source citations

The Vista Source Options screen does NOT have an option for Print
Bibliography, although it does have several additional options such as
Format Source Title, Include Record Date, etc.

I am running the latest build of Legacy V. 7 on both machines.

What goes?

While there's a lot that I like about Legacy, since trying to use the book
feature I've discovered nothing but problems.

I moved to Legacy from Family Tree Maker because an early build of FTM's
latest verion did not have a Book feature. Now they do.

[LegacyUG] Legacy Now Available in German and Swedish

2008-08-18 Thread Geoff Rasmussen
Surprise, Arizona, August 18, 2008 -- Millennia Corporation, a leader in
family history software, today announced that its software, Legacy Family
Tree, is now available in two new languages: Deutsch (German) and Svenska
(Swedish).

The software, used by beginners and professionals to record, plan, and share
their family trees, is now the premier choice for German and Swedish
researchers. Legacy is also available in Danish, Dutch, Norwegian, and
English editions.

Making genealogy software available to researchers in their native language
is a big step in helping the world trace their family trees, said Dave
Berdan, president of Millennia Corporation. This is an exciting day for us
to help German and Swedish researchers.

Do you have the Start indices on odd numbered pages in the Index Options?
If so the Location Index will always be on an Odd numbered page with a
blank before it if necessary.

There is a recorded problem with printing and the Title page being on the
back of the last Index page. The work around is to create a preview first
then use the print button on the preview screen.

Re: [LegacyUG] Most used narrative reports

2008-08-18 Thread Alastair Lack
To get back to the original point (at least I hope I'm right that
these comments may be helpful), I find that the only way to include
all the sometimes rather distant descendants of interesting ancestors
is to use the 'multiple lines of descent' report.
To help with creating this, I title the 'head' of each interesting
line 'Old Father XX'. Then I can click in the name list in the given
names, and all the 'Old Father's come up together, from which I can
note the RINs, for use in the order I choose in the report.
The only snag is that although one may check the 'don't repeat
duplicate lines' box, this is unreliable.

Any help with what triggers the 'duplicate line' would be much appreciated.

We are working very hard on new Family Search integration and have some
very
cool features coming that will really make it easy for users.

There are about 10 different areas of certification to be able to work with
the NFS.

Legacy needs to be in all
of the areas because we are a bigger or a complete genealogy program.

Ruth it is my understanding that you cannot go back to previous
versions with the fdb file once upgraded and used in a newer version.
If you create a GEDCOM export, you should be able to open it in
version 6 or earlier, but not the actual legacy database.

So please be sure to GEDCOM ALL of your active files prior to
reverting to an older version.

[LegacyUG] Location List

To set all the geolocations, I had to add . . .London, England' etc.

without the long names.
But when I create the list, each line literally says

interest. I don't know of any mailing lists that do what you want. This kind
of filtering should be done on your end with your email client.

Carol,

Do you mean September 8th for the beginning date? Do you mind if we help
publicize this through Legacy News?

Thanks,

GMail does that -- I never see my own messages posted. Since most of
them don't get a response, I just assume they're getting through and
no one knows the answer -- or hasn't had time to respond.

Re: [LegacyUG] Descendant Report

2008-08-18 Thread Ruth Nerud
Since the Descendant Report doesn't work, I thought I'd try the Ancestor
Report. The Title of the report is Descendants of (Name). Shouldn't it say
Ancestors of (Name)? I wonder if I should uninstall Ver. 7 and reinstall it?
I'm sure those folks who've been waiting for Legacy to come out in German
and Swedish are now delighted, but I for one wish the English version was
bug-free. I've been trying to patient but this is getting ridiculous. I've
looked at uninstalling ver. 7 and downloading ver 6 but the instructions
look difficult.

I'm not sure where you're looking. My Operating System is XP, not Vista. I
do not have an option to print bibliography in the Publishing Center under
Source Options. It is, however, an available option of other reports.
