[LegacyUG] Can't Recover Functionality from Crash

2009-08-31 Thread MJ Harper

I think I've followed all of the suggestions from the website on what
to do when after a crash the program doesn't work right.

Of course, I've rebooted (cold boot). It still puts me back to all
the default settings when the program is launched anew.

I've defragged. Same results.

I've first save my Legacy Data to another location. Then I
uninstalled Legacy 7 (Deluxe). It could not completely uninstall,
however, and I got the message:

"Could not open INSTALL.LOG.file"

I did a fresh download of the program. When opened, it had my
customer number and all that already in the fields I thought I'd have
to fill out, on a fresh install from a deleted product.

I did a couple of simple changes, e.g., fonts, female color,
background color. Closed the program, did a restart. Opened the
program again and those simple changes were still there. So I made
my other option choices. Closed the program, exited Legacy.

Restarted again. Opened Legacy. It set everything back to defaults
yet again.

I'm afraid to try to do anything with my data until this part of it
gets fixed. What else can I do?

Thanks for any help.

Has anyone come up with a successful string to search Find-A-Grave -
where the current person in Legacy is put into the search boxes on
Find-A-Grave search? If so - may I please have the string so that I
can set up such a search!

RE: [LegacyUG] Can't Recover Functionality from Crash

2009-08-31 Thread Boyd Miller
I had the same sort of problem and this was my solution.

Make sure your data is not under C:/Legacy/Data folder. If it is, copy the
data and pictures etc to somewhere else, and don't put them back in the
C:/Legacy/Data folder when you get the program running again. (General
principal is to always keep data separate from the program files.)

Copy the file C:/Legacy/Backup/Install.log and put it somewhere away from
Legacy in case you need it again.

Uninstall Legacy. If it says "Could not open INSTALL.LOG.file", then copy
from your safe copy of this file and put it in C:/Legacy folder. Try to
Uninstall again.

Have a look at C:/Legacy and you will see that even though you have
uninstalled the program, it has left a series of folders and a few files.

Copy the file C:/Legacy/Legacy.usr to somewhere out of the way (this has you
customise settings). If you loose this it is no big deal to reset you
Customise settings.

Delete the whole C:/Legacy folder and all its sub-folders and files.

Reinstall Legacy to C:/ from the original Legacy7setup.exe file

Reinstate the Legacy.usr file in C:/Legacy (overwrite the default file), and
you should be back in business.

Depending on whether you have moved your data, you may have to reconnect
this from Options>Customise>Locations

[LegacyUG] Sourcing an old wedding invitation

2009-08-31 Thread Brian Beddor
I have an old wedding invitation that I'd like to use as a source. It
has the name of the couple, the names of their parents, the date of the
wedding and the location of the wedding. What would be the best way to
source this using SourceWriter? The options under "Marriage Records"
don't seem to fit. The closest that I see is "Artifacts" -- but I don't
think of a wedding invitation as an artifact.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Brian

Re: [LegacyUG] Adoption

2009-08-31 Thread Kramer
Mike, there are probably various ways to do this depending on the
situation. However, I would:

1. put in initially her under the Steinway family and note the
adoption at the bottom of the screen where you enter her personal
info. I would use that name as if it were the maiden name due to the
amount of time it would have been used by her.
2. add in the biological parents kind of like you would if a divorce
and remarriage took place.
3. I would add her Cassebeer as an alias, not change it under her
biological parents. Depending on when she was adopted, she may never
have used that name except on adoption papers.

2. Do I record her surname as CASSEBEER but create and Event/Fact

3. He marriage record says that a STEINWAY (not a CASSEBEER) got

I don't think I would have normally used the word "Artifact" in that
context either, but Legacy does and as one of the dictionary definitions
of the word is "Hand-made object, or other result of human activity such
as a design or document" I think they actually correct to do so.

So go ahead and use the Artifacts template. I have done so for
invitations and the like.

Re: [LegacyUG] Renumbering RINs and MRINs

2009-08-31 Thread Kramer
I still would like to renumber my RINs and MRINs without myself as
#1. I switched from Legacy 6.0 deluxe (on a Mac in Virtual PC) to
Legacy 7.0 (to a Dell computer) deluxe last week but didn't see a
prompt to renumber. I also lost all of my sources too in the
transfer. I couldn't figure out how to get the files off of Virtual
PC and my husband finally did it "by accident." I'm wondering if we
should try to make a GEDCOM file of my 6.0 info, figure out how to get
that out of the Mac which was the problem in the first place, and then
put that into 7.0. Would that retain the sources and also give me the
prompt to renumber?

We have LOTS of genealogists in one name I am working on. The first
ancestor began researching it over 100 years ago and people have been
working on it ever since. I was elected the new Family Historian of
that side and want to work with others in a more cooperative manner.
It is just like me not to have myself as #1 but also it might show a
little family solidarity if I have our line organized with someone
more likely as #1. The family is so large there are 21 lines with
thousands of people in each line. There have been marriages between
the lines etc and we need things computerized. Most is in typed or
professionally printed books. I'm working on locating who has lines
in genealogy software to make it easier to import into one large
system for reference and each line separate for more manageable
publication etc. The other person who was interested in being Family
Historian wants to publish a 3-ring binder book which is what I
already began. It might be a computer disk instead of a book, but so
far there's so much info and so many people working on it that (and
some very possessive of it) but no one yet that I know of has any
filing system for it but me. It wouldn't be that tough for me to redo
at this time. So should I retransfer or what? I already deleted the
messages about the loss of sources. Would this correct that as well?
Is everyone losing sources when they upgrade or is it just
transferring between computers or what? Is it always best to load from
a GEDCOM into a new version? I want to figure out what I did wrong so
I can be of help to others in the family that I am influencing to
switch to Legacy.

Indeed it does, Mary.

I have mine in My Documents, but wish I had put them in C:\Legacy\Pictures\
when I started out. It is now too late and I have too many images to make the

You mean version 6 of the program? Or your version 6 family file
(*.fdb)?

I don't know why your sources "disappeared". The only way I know that
sources can "disappear" is if you transfer your file via GEDCOM and
either fail to export your sources or fail to import your sources. If
you still have your V6 database (.fbd) or a backup (.zip) around
somewhere, you stand a good chance of being able to recover your
sources.

As far as renumbering is concerned, in a GEDCOM import you have the
option of specifying a starting RIN/MRIN that the import process will
use. You could use that to assign your entire database to RINs above a
certain number ... say 1. This would free up anything below 1
for you to *MANUALLY* change an individual's RIN to. It will still be a
99% manual process.

If you're not doing web pages, can't you just move the pictures to a
similar structure of folders within your desired target folder. Then,
use Legacy to access one of the now missing pictures and, when it moans

RE: [LegacyUG] Can't Recover Functionality from Crash

2009-08-31 Thread ronald ferguson

Sure could Mike, *but* in my ignorance at the time I started, I created
multiple folders, all in My Documents so it's not quite that easy. And to make
it worse not all the docs are in the folder where they should be. In other
words (politely) a mess.

As I am still using my original machine for most of the work which I do, this
mess continues. In reality, of course, it gets worse. If Legacy didn't know
where to find my stuff I would be really at a loss.

So, whilst I know the options available to me to correct the effects of the
naivety of an innocent blundering into the ways of the Legacy program for the
first time, I think I will continue with the muddle until Legacy's memory
expires. With a bit of luck it will be after mine does :-)

This may be a silly question, but did you actually upload it to the
Internet?

Until you do that you are just viewing a version of your potential
website on your own computer. From the way you say "thinking I could
view it before publishing it" makes it sounds as though you think it
went directly to the Internet when you created the pages. It didn't!

To "gather up" all of your Legacy pictures scattered around the hard drive,
do a multimedia backup. Then *restore* from your, and when given the
opportunity to designate Where you want the files copied to - specify the
folder of your desire.
I restored all of mine to C:\Legacy\Pictures\ and it worked just fine.
Getting them separated into various subfolders within the \Pictures\ folder
would be another matter ;-)

Make sure your data is not under C:/Legacy/Data folder. If it is, copy
the

data and pictures etc to somewhere else, and don't put them back in the
C:/Legacy/Data folder when you get the program running again. (General
principal is to always keep data separate from the program files.)

I've never had a problem with Data and Pictures being in the Legacy
folder. Why change Legacy default locations, it just introduces
another complication.

Indeed it does, Mary.

The problem has returned.

I am attempting to source an Alternate Names entry. I clicked on
"Open Source Clipboard" and received "Run-time error '380' / Invalid
property value." When I click on "OK," Legacy is blown away.

As noted below in my last post on this topic, I thought I had solved
the problem by doing #3 (export all your records into a new Legacy
family file and use it). Now the problem is back. What has changed?:
1. I turned off the computer last night. 2. I was not attempting to
Source from Alternate Names before.

There are two of us with this problem. Are we alone?

5:00 p.m., 8/30/2009
I have been having the same problem. It happens when I am in an
Individual's Information window and I click on "Open Source
Clipboard" or "Add Clipboard Source to the Current Field." Depending
which I clicked on, I would get either run-time error 380 or error
3421. Then Legacy would crash. Poof. Gone. This was repeatable.

I did a search on the Internet and found a 2001 message from Legacy's
own Jim Terry. This is what he wrote:

I don't remember seeing this error before either, so my advice is going to
be very "generic" because one or more of the following steps will usually
fix 95% of Legacy errors:

Please perform File Maintenance to see if it will solve this problem. File
Maintenance will repair index errors, correct common record problems, remove
references to unused information, and compact the family file. Here are the
steps:

1. Click File from the menu bar and select File Maintenance from the file
menu.

2. Choose the Check/Repair option from the submenu and proceed.

3. If that does not solve the problem, next export all your records into a
new Legacy family file and use it. (File, Export To / Legacy file.)

4. If there are still problems, run the Legacy setup again and from the
InstallShield options select Repair.

Please let me know how it goes.

Good Luck,

Re: [LegacyUG] Renumbering RINs and MRINs

2009-08-31 Thread Carl Cox
If I understand what you are trying to do, you would like each section of the
family to have RIN numbers within some range, say Name1 from 10,000 to 20,000,
Name2 from 20,000 to . . . .
I would suggest using GEDCOMs for each section, and on import tell it where to
begin the numbers. You will still have some merging to do where the lines
intermarried, and new additions will be numbered from the stack of unused RINs,
so keeping the RINs in proper place may be a problem.

I hope it works for you!

Re: [LegacyUG] Run time errors

2009-08-31 Thread Virginia Dunham
Just a question...when this happens do you run the task manager to see what
processes are running...and what else may be causing the system to
"overload"...had a similar problem when trying to access sources with
F4...found something on Google about deleting some processes that I noticed
were running on "overtime" with each Legacy "meltdown"...sorry, but I do
not remember what processes but they had something to do with Windows error
reporting.

Just a thought...I am not a computer whiz...

Re: [LegacyUG] Search the Internet for Current Person

2009-08-31 Thread Marilyn Clark
Go to a person in your Legacy file, then click on the globe "Internet" on the
top menubar. Then click on "Search Internet for Current Person..."

It opens a pop-up window where you can replace one of the 8 websites to choose
from with Find A Grave. I used Alta Vista because I never use Alta Vista. Click
on the button, "Customize Searches..." and it opens another pop-up window where
you can Select one of the Internet Searches (I still used Alta Vista as my
choice). This opens up yet another pop-up window called "Select an Internet
Search." "[none]" will already be highlighted. At this juncture, click the
"Add..." button.

*Another* pop-up window will appear where you can name your new search (I named
it "Find A Grave") and then you can finally paste that long URL into the first
box. The second box already has []=[%20] in it so all I had to do then was
"Save" and it was done.

"Alta Vista" was replaced with "Find A Grave" on that first window, and it
works great. BTW, the Alta Vista search string is still there in Legacy,
apparently Legacy can only display 8 other websites at a time, to search from,
in that very first pop-up window.

Sorry if this is too simplistic, I'm kind of a detail nut...

I don't know what WS_FTP is, but I assume it is simply an FTP program?
You don't have to use that if you don't want to, you can use any FTP
program you choose - my choice is FileZilla
(http://filezilla-project.org/) and there are others.

Talking about uploading your web pages to Rootsweb is getting beyond the
focus of this list, so you may like to take your questions to the list
Rootsweb provides for its Freepages users - you should have been
automatically subscribed to this list when you were granted Freepages
web space. Its home page is at
http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/other/RootsWeb_Support/Freepages-Help.html

Hope this helps. :-)

That number of files should not take all that long. I would have thought maybe

If dial-up, this could take hours. With cable or dsl it won't take that
long. There is really no quicker way for the initial upload.

Re: [LegacyUG] Can't Recover Functionality from Crash

2009-08-31 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
I just fixed my photos file of 30 years of scanned copies, which contains a few
thousand pictures. From the old Windows 3.0 files, with the file name
requirement less than nine characters, and the modern size with different
rules. What I needed to do was switch to an external drive because no room on
the laptop. The Legacy program on C: and data on E: I created my
E:/photos/pictures/* then in the * I made subfiles docs, graves, 9 photos files
- numbered photo100 to photo900, US Census, Swedish Census, then under the both
Census sorted by years, and other organizing tools.
I recommend doing the same. Once you have done the task the upkeep will save
all the time spent looking for where stuff is 'hiding'.
I will help off list if desired.

RE: [LegacyUG] Can't Recover Functionality from Crash

2009-08-31 Thread Boyd Miller
This string has got right off the original subject of reinstallation after a
crash.

My remedy for this problem is the same as could be used for folks who had
the problem with the long box at the bottom of the Locations screen and then
were not being able to uninstall the program properly because the
Install.log file had disappeared, and there are corrupted files left in
C:/Legacy after the uninstall.

Has anyone else had the problem that the original message relates to?

I just fixed my photos file of 30 years of scanned copies, which contains a
few thousand pictures. From the old Windows 3.0 files, with the file name
requirement less than nine characters, and the modern size with different
rules. What I needed to do was switch to an external drive because no room
on the laptop. The Legacy program on C: and data on E: I created my
E:/photos/pictures/* then in the * I made subfiles docs, graves, 9 photos
files - numbered photo100 to photo900, US Census, Swedish Census, then under
the both Census sorted by years, and other organizing tools.
I recommend doing the same. Once you have done the task the upkeep will save
all the time spent looking for where stuff is 'hiding'. I will help off list
if desired. Rich in LA CA

Scan a copy and put it in Legacy as a picture.
Have a good day.

Re: [LegacyUG] Web Pages

2009-08-31 Thread Amy
Well, I didn't hit "publish" or "upload" but it did give me an URL. How can
I tell? (dumb huh? LOL)

Re: [LegacyUG] Web Pages

2009-08-31 Thread Wendy Howard

Hi Amy,

> Well, I didn't hit "publish" or "upload" but it did give me an URL.
How can I tell?

What was the URL it gave you?

Did it take you to a place on your computer's hard drive (eg C:\My
Documents\My Webs\...) or to someplace on the internet (eg
http://www.someurl.com/...)?

The first one is only visible to you, and hasn't been released onto the
internet anywhere yet.

Creating your web pages does not automatically put them on the internet
- you have to upload them somewhere in a separate action. If you
haven't done that, they won't be there.

Hope this helps. :-)

Kind Regards,
Wendy Howard
