I have been contemplating converting my (old) sources from Basic to Source
Writer format. However, I'm thinking I just have the urge to do it due to
my personality... everything must match etc.

I would appreciate it if any of you on this list could share with me any

Re: [LegacyUG] Moving Street Addresses and Location Names from Location

2009-09-09 Thread Leon Chapman
Mike:

I believe you can accomplish the migration patterns for an individual using
Legacy as follows:

1. Place a Resident event for the individual for each resident location,
e.g., at college, 1st job, 2nd job, etc -- I have about 15 resident events
for myself for each location that I have lived at - be sure to include the
city, county, state, country location in the resident event
2. Then View the Chronology Tab and it will display the time history of a
person very nicely -- this provides a 1 or 2 page summary of a persons life
3. You can also map an individual and it will map all of these resident
event locations during the persons life.

When I 1st started using Legacy, I didn't use event, but I now place Census
events, resident events, and others for each person so I can use the
Chronology reporting capability and the mapping capability.

Try this for yourself in your database, you might like it.

Thanks for responding. My main point was that there is no single place in
Legacy that deals with migration patterns of ancestors. I believe that this
information is very important if someone wants to understand such issues.
Therefore, having a complete history of locations and addresses of
individuals throughout their lifetime (in one place) can be created through
an broad Event, such as Residence History. In one click on your mouse
or in a print out of an individual's genealogy data, you can see
at-a-glance the most important information summarize appropriately. You
can then compare such migration information to other family members, etc.
Patterns will emerge that will enable you to write a great family story.

It would be great if Legacy could develop a migration capability so that we
all could see a migration pattern plotting chart. It would be also
interesting to overlay one individual's migration pattern on to other family
members information. Hence, one could view a complete family's migration
 history. Any thoughts?

 Mike,

Yes, Events/Facts appear in reports and they contain the Location Field
where it says Place in the Event boxes. Which is why I use Location Fields
and not the Address Fields in the Address Book.

Does not Events/Facts appear in reports? If so, I have found creating an
Event called Residence History is a great way to see the migration
patterns of your ancestors over time. In this Event, I list all known
addresses by year, including those locations/addresses at birth, marriage,
and death as well as those in Census Records, Naturalization Records, etc.
Its all in one place in an easy understandable format. This does not mean I
 don't record addresses/locations in specific records. I do. However, I don't
know of any way that Legacy can display all of an ancestors
locations/addresses over his/her lifetime in one place.

Personally, I only use the Address Fields as an address book - hence only

Why? Mainly because the Address Fields do not appear in many reports. I

Re: [LegacyUG] Default location for photos

2009-08-29 Thread Leon Chapman
I agree you store you files and pictures anywhere on your hard drive
or thumb drive. Conceptually you could store each picture in a
different location and as long as you assign or point to the picture
location, Legacy will be happy.

The issue is what happens when you move to another computer - you will
need to replicate and/or point to the location of each picture file.
The other issue is backing up your files - you will have to back up/
copy each file from each location.

If you only have a few pictures, then everything is easy. In my case,
I have several thousands of pictures - I want to keep it simple. Try
moving your files to another location, e.g., c/legacy6/ to d:/legacy7/
and move your pictures to drive D. This is where simplicity pays off -
same for backups.

Bottom line, if you like complexity, go for it. In my experiences,
the KISS principle works much better.

Since Joyce has chosen to create a new structure/location for her photos,
she may very well have her family database in a unique location also
Wherever it is located, she will probably want to copy that file to the same

The 2nd option that I proposed was to simplify the picture file structure by
coping all the photo files into a single sub-directory. Legacy by default
uses: C:\Legacy\Pictures\ as the picture sub-directory.

The standard Legacy default locations has advantages when it comes to
backing up your files and databases - it is much simpler, just copy the
entire Legacy subfolder and you get all your necessary files. Some people
have their database and pictures located under c:\My Documents\so they
can backup the folder c:\My Documents\ and get all of the major files.

that private information is to be printed. The square brackets work in any
field and in notes for sentence(s) or word(s). You have control to either
print private information or not in your reports. If you chose to print
private information, then you will get the information printed.

Your issue is still a problem -- the private information is a global switch,
so it would not work for a single individual's birth/death information
assuming your printing multiple people in reports.

Library, so MojoPac probably wouldn't help me for that, but it
would for a family member's computer.

I have PAF5 that I haven't used in several years, but might give
that a try.

Thanks so much for the help

expand capabilities. I have asked the developer to provide a means of
supporting alternate sets of parents (I'm adopted, and trace both my

the display of images. The first request should be included shortly, and
the second is on the list of things planned for the future. I also run

After looking at the site, new.familysearch.org, you cannot use their site
unless you are a member of the church and have a membership record number.

So, I would guess, for the majority of Legacy users, the integration / tie

available within Legacy.

You can access the Pilot.familysearch.org site and create a search string
within Legacy that will provide lookups for you.

Good luck.

The alternate name appears in my Index of Names in the Modifed Descendant

specific nickname or Alternate Name in the Index, it won't be there. I have
gone through the 3,000 page Descendant's Book Report in Word and added code
for all Alternate Names so they'd appear in the index, but that took a lot
of time. It would be much easier if it were part of the Legacy program

I think you also have to check the Alternate given and surnames box in

(If alternate names aren't included in the report, they obviously won't be

You basically can do whatever you want depending on the information you have
available.
Many times you only have a Census date to define the Resident event in which
you would only use one date. If you have the beginning and ending dates of
a resident event, then you should probably use them or at least put them in
the notes for the event.

Here is an example that I use for myself:

Event: Residence
Description: 1234 Main Street
Date:1 Oct 2004-1 Jul 2005
Place: Somewhere, Good Co, WY, USA

I also do the same for Occupation events.

If you have the beginning and ending dates, I would certainly document them
either in the Date field of the event or the Event Notes field.

Hope this helps.

January 4, 1960. So there are several months in between where residence is
 not known.

Other examples of this might be Education, Employment, Military Service,

Try this search string (remember, no spaces):

Use default Data Prep field:

NOW - has anyone come up with the Customized Search String needed to

Re: [LegacyUG] push pins not showing

2008-12-02 Thread Leon Chapman
I just installed the latest update to Legacy, v 7.0.0.76 on 10
classroom machines all using Vista.

The push pins did not work on 1 of the 10 machines.
I was able to get push pins to work from within the map, by going to
Options, Push Pins, (3rd choice) Large Blue pins with Red active.

The other Push Pins did not work - just a map only for the locations.

I do not understand the cause of the problem, but there is an issue here.

 Version: 7.0.0.76

I'm not sure if this problem existed before 7.0.0.76. I personally don't
remember ever having a problem with it, but my experience with chronology
reports thus far has been somewhat limited anyhow. I've only recently
started using them. I just created a Chronology Report for an individual,
and there are source citations listed at the bottom that are not attached to
any of her events. For example, at the end of the report, I have this:

 15. Steve Zulpo, Rosati Family Tree (http://rosati-mo.com/tree/: accessed
9 Nov 2008), entry for Peter De Luca Jr.

However, up in the report, #15 is not a superscript on any event. The only
events this master source and that particular source detail mentioned above
are attached to is Peter De Luca Jr.'s birth, death, burial, and
mother/father relationship. The chronology report I have run is for Peter's
 mother, Clementina.

The same master source with different source detail is attached to
Clementina's name, birth, and death on her assigned sources screen. That
 footnote shows up correctly as:

 6. Steve Zulpo, Rosati Family Tree (http://rosati-mo.com/tree/: accessed
10 Nov 2008), entry for Clementina Matilda Trillo.

This is attached correctly to her name, birth, and death on the chronology
 report.

The only thing I can think of is that one of the events on this chronology
report is Peter Jr.'s birth. However, I don't remember there ever being
sources on the chronology report for the births of children. Another reason
I don't think it has anything to do with his birth event being on the
chronology report is b/c Clementina's daughter Aileen's birth is also an
event on this chronology report. The master source and detail attached to
her birth on her assigned sources screen are the same as Peter Jr.'s except
the last part reads entry for Aileen De Luca. This particular footnote
with her detail does not show up on Clementina's chronology report. And
also, there are other sources on Peter Jr.'s assigned sources screen for his
birth, such as his son's marriage certificate, that do not show up on the
 chronology report.

By the way, the same exact source for Peter Jr. shows up on Clementina's
husband's chronology report even though there is also no event attached to
it by means of a superscript on the report.

I made sure that I unchecked Child-Par Relationship on the include tab of
the Options menu, just in case this has something to do with it.

You need to select Reports All Reports and select a report
Ancestors, Descendants, Descendant Narrative for example - assume
Descendant.

Then select Report Options button at bottom of Options for Descendant Books
and then select the Sources Tab.

There you have options to print a Bibliograhpy, Footnotes, etc.

The best part is all is the pictures of each application screen as he

As they say, a picture is worth 1000 words.

There are 13 chapters, 7 Appendices in the 495 page book.

Re: [LegacyUG] combining two files

2008-09-18 Thread Leon Chapman
Yes, all your sources will be imported.
If you have duplicate people in both databases, Legacy will try to
automatically merge those people and the ones is cannot merge it will let
you determine whether to merge them. This is why you need to backup your
original file before you start this merge process. I would not recommend
using a master source when importing -- that will add a source to everyone
in your imported file. Do that in Legacy ahead of time before you import if
you want a master source say added to each name field.

  Michele,

Basically, you need to use FileExportLegacy and then Import into your
file. Set to import to your file with s starting RIN greater than the last
in your file. I guess your husband is in both files so you will need to
merge him into the husband in your current file and ant other duplicates.

You will have to use two conditions as follows in the Query by Example Tab:

Primary Condition:

Second Condition:
  And
Individual, Death Date, Before, 31 Dec 1983

This finds all people who died in 1983.

Is there a naming convention or pattern in naming
 sources. The training
 video suggests:

Country, State, County, City - date - Census - Name

for a census, but of course there are any number of
 sources out there. I
don't want to make up my own system which may change
 from entry to entry.
This would of course result in the same type of
 source being listed in two

Is there a guide or list? Is Evidence Explained

making new events like family picture, marriage picture, should work
fine. You do have to have the Events Event Pictures option checked

Your best bet is to use events for county formations as attached to an

You can declare these county events to be private in the event data

Then, when you normally print reports, the private events will not be printed.
But, if you want to print the private events, you can select in report

Re: [LegacyUG] Mapping addresses

2008-06-26 Thread Leon Chapman
Keith:

I use the following so I can map 2 locations:

1. Brenham, Washington County, Texas, USA -- Death location

2. Brenham - Priarie Lea Cemetery, Washington County, Texas, USA -
Buriel location

This way, you can use the push-pin for the cemetery location.

Yes, it creates two locations, but they are different.

Now let's say for a persons birth I enter as the location Brenham,
 Washington County, Texas, USA

I also use this location for the burial. However I add a burial address of
Priarie Lea Cemetery in the burial address.

The problem is that I can only map both instances at one location i.e. the
town centre of Brenham. But I would have liked to have a push pin in place
for the cemetery too. How do I manage to do that without creating other
location with a different structure than my 4 place holders?

There is probably some very good reason why the RTF option isn't available

However, have you tried producing the text file and opening that in your

You should be able to run another version of XP as a Virtual Machine

I wouldn't recommend going back that far in time.

Good Luck.

Having two instances of XP would be simpler than dual booting, but it will
probably require increasing the amount of RAM, as both OS's would be using
RAM at the same time. Dual booting is harder to switch back and forth but
 avoids the RAM issue.

A VM is probably the best solution for those who buy a new computer with
Vista but have some products that require XP or earlier, or IE6 or earlier.

 Pat Gary:

You might want to consider this solution as an option.

Use MS Virtual PC, v.6.0.6001, SP1 is the latest version -- It is a
 free download.
You can install it and run a Virtual Machine.
I have Vista and am using it to run Windows XP in a virtual machine
 window.
You will need to have a copy of an operating system to install in the
 Virtual Machine (VM).

I have installed Legacy 7 in the VM under Windows XP and have
installed IE 7 in the VM. Then Legacy 7 and IE 7 run perfectly and I
can do the mapping in the VM.
The files can be copied from your hard drive to the VM very easily.

One advantage is you do not have to reboot your machine to run the VM.
It just opens a window and starts up or you can save the exiting
state of the VM and return to it later.

You can also use VMWare software for a VM, but tipically it will cost
for the software and moving in and out of the VM windows back to VISTA
is not as user friendly as MS Virtual PC software.

The use of VMs has become more popular since the Macs now run on an
Intel processor and people want to run an application under Windows
that is not available to them otherwise, e.g., Legacy.

We have gone to this approach in our computer lab for teaching both
Vista and XP. We use the VM under Vista to run XP to teach classes as
 needed on Windows XP.

The bottom line, you get to keep your favorite IE6 or whatever on your
machine as your workhorse, but you can use IE7 only in the VM -- this
way you have the best of both.

Back up your existing Legacy 6 database and picture files.
Then copy your database and picture files into the correct locations under:

C:\Legacy7\Pictures\

This way you can run either Legacy 6 or Legacy 7.

I have not found any need to go back to Legacy 6, but once your
database is upgraded to Legacy 7 format, it will hard to go back to
Legacy 6.

You will like Legacy 7!

Re: [LegacyUG] Huge Master Source List (was Source titling question)

2008-06-03 Thread Leon Chapman
Mary:

You can still use the original sourcing just like you are doing in
Legacy 6 if you like.
In Legacy 7 you can choose as an option to use the new Source writer or not.

I do not believe I will be using the Source writer until the user can
edit some of the templates.
For now, the templates are fixed. I think it is on the to-do list to
allow the user to create their own templates and edit existing ones.
Once that happens, then I think everyone will be using the source
writer.

Of course, be SURE you specify a DIFFERENT INSTALL directory!

I like having both old and new version installed - it allows me to keep
working with the older version while I play with the new version to get
used to it and make sure I don't hit any hiccups. It also allows me to
compare screens and option settings and report settings between the two
 versions.

One problem - version 7's database is a different format. Once you've
converted your database, version 6 won't be able to read it. In the past
they've offered an after the fact patch for the old version so it can read
the new version (but of course doesn't offer the extra features). But its
too early to know if they will do this for version 6/7 yet (I'm guessing
they will). Best bet - make a COPY of your database and use one copy for
version 6 and a different database copy for version 7 while you are
 playing/experimenting with it.

NOTE - I have not tried de-installing an older version after a new one is
installed. I would think it would work fine (assuming, again, that it is
installed into a different directory), but I haven't tested it.

Either one works.

In Legacy, under Options, Custimize, Data Format Tab, at lower left of

1) assure a space is added after each comma (that is what I use),
2) remove spaces after commas,
3) leave spacing as entered.

It is faster data entry for me to chose option one above.

It is true that you can click an edit button and bring up the
individual's edit screen when you are in the master lists - Location,
Source, Event definition. The master location list, when you click

click a person and edit. The same for the source and Event

It is a big improvement to be able to edit the person from these screens.

It will not run on an Apple computer directly, however:

You do have the option on Apple to run a virtual machine of say

different emulators or dual boot packages that will do that. Once you
are running the virtual machine (Windows XP), you could install Legacy

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy V6. File ID #s and Events – Am I doing this right? (semi-long)

2008-05-15 Thread Leon Chapman
Joi:

As I understand the File ID in sourcing and other locations, it
provides a method so you can correlate with your actual source paper
files that you have created in a filing cabinet. As an example, you
might have folders in your filing cabinet labeled by Family, e.g.,
Jones, Smith. In fact you might have 3 folders of Jones information -
Jones.b.1870, Jones.b.1890, Jones.Tom.b1910.

In the Jones case, one could use the File ID in Legacy to correspond
with your folders by using File IDs of: Jones.1870, Jones.1890,
Jones.Tom.1910.

The filing numbers / system you want to use is up to you. I think if
you search the archives, you will find some very useful formats that
people are using for their actual hard copy documents / folders.

Another option is to not use the File ID at all.

Good luck.

So, here's the question…if I have a source document that provides information
for many things –such as a death certificate which gives the DOD, COD, place
of death, parent's names, etc— I have one Event in Legacy -- the death,
right? (Still a bit confused as to what should and should not be listed as
 an event)

But, that aside, for all the other pieces of information gleaned from this
single document– the death certificate is cited in the various places – COD,
DOD, Cemetery, etc.—so far so good?

Now, what do I do in the File ID box? Is that something to turn on
somewhere with a tick box so an ID is automatically generated? Is that the
 MRIN? The RIN?

If I were to create the File ID using the MRIN (or RIN), should I tack on an
additional number or letter to identify the specific document attached to
that family or individual? So, the Death Certificate might be MRIN 00012-2,
representing couple 12 with only 2 documents in their file. Does this work?

What kind of problems could this create in the future for reports, retrieving
 documents, etc.

Thanks for your help--many of the posts here have already answered so many

wonderful. They have integrated sourcing using a Wizard for inputs.
As I understand, they have all the sourcing templates for everything

Geoff had uncovered and worked with E Mills to get clarification on.
This has also led to some of the delays with Legacy 7.

I think everyone will be greatly impressed with the new sourcing
capabilies in terms of both input and output formats. You basically
enter the fundamental source data in templates and the Wizard writes
the output sourcing based on the examples in E. Mills book. You don't
have to worry about the formating of the output -- it comes as part of
the system. There are also ways you can go back and edit the source
if you so desire. I think everyone will find this part of Legacy to
be well work whatever the cost of the new version will be.

Geoff also showed a nicely integrated mapping system as part of Legacy
 7. For locations in your database, one can zoom into the street level
to see a cemetery location. There is also the capability to view the
maps in 3D and do similar things like is in Google Earth. Cities are
shown with buildings in 3D. You will need a high speed Internet
connection for best performance of this mapping system.

Of course, everyone now is aware of the new Legacy 7 Charting

great input and influence from Legacy's own Geoff Rasmussen!

I have renewed confidence that the new sourcing capabilities will be exactly
what the customers need: something easy to use for beginners and something

 BRAVA Elizabeth.

Thanks, Kathy--and Betty, for posting the GPC announcement. One sentence in
that announcement is important--or at least the last four words of this
 snippet from the sentence:

Mrs. Mills' 2007 publication, the distillation of years of her own and her
 colleagues' research experience

EE would not have been possible without the contributions of *many* from
this list--many who shared their resources, many others who pushed me
outside my comfort zone to learn new materials I did not daily use, and
others who helped with more technical aspects. In addition to all those
mentioned in the acknowledgments, I should add one more--Geoff Rasmussen of
Legacy--who, post-publication, combed the volume with a fresh and
wonderfully critical eye, finding passages to polish before the new printing
went to press last month. No work is ever perfect, but thanks to Geoff's
meticulous effort, the new printing should be--in the words of the late,
great genealogist, Ge Lee Corley Hendrix, CG, FASG--more better :).

 Thanks, *everybody.*

 Geoff,

Twice now when in the charting program I get *hung up* with this error menu:

Sizing Options: LegacyCharting.EXE - no disk
There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive E:

Of course there is no disk in the drive. I was not doing anything with that
drive. No matter what I do it is STUCK! I cannot get out of this without
going to task manager and closing the program. When this happened this time
I was changing the 'themes' to see what each looked like and checking out
the other options of the program (trying to learn it). I don't remember what
I was doing the first time the message came up.

There are only 90 people in this particular DB so I know I am not going to
try it on one of my larger ones.

OK, so I am gonna go back to reading the help section and see if I can
 figure this out.

Re: [LegacyUG] Help with a location entry

2007-12-11 Thread Leon Chapman
Legacy doesn't really care how you enter your data.
The normal approach (in USA) is to make sure you have 4 fields:
1. City
2. County
3. State
4. Country

If you followed this rule, your location would be:
, of Perry Co, MS, USA

The only issue you now have is when you search or look at your
location list, all of the of county will sort under the Os. So
finding Perry County could be an issue.

You may be better off documenting the Of Perry County in the Notes
field, then all of your locations will be easier to work with.

If I add the word of to the location line, will that mess up the location

Re: [LegacyUG] I am very frustrated

2007-11-21 Thread Leon Chapman
Michele:

You are on the right track.
I always take a Preview of reports to make sure the wording is like I
want it when I add sources and events. The screens also show you how
the events / sources will be printed. A little tweaking can normally
get the right results.

If you have imported from another program, then you will have to do
some clean up work.

Legacy offers so many options that other programs do not have
available to the user, so much of the inputs in other programs creates
problems that you didn't know you had -- like in the Location fields.

According to the peak looks that has been reported on the new Legacy,
there should be more standard templates that one can use. You may
want to wait till the new version comes along.

Good luck

for Certification of Genealogists and the wonderful book Professional
Genealogy by Elizabeth Shown Mills, as well as her citation books). I am
not saying that the report should be coming out perfect and I am glad that
you can change the wording on the event fields (sentence override) but I am
going to have to go in and pretty much change the wording on all of the
event fields (and I am thinking that I am going to have to do this on each
individual and that any changes I make will not carry over person to
 person).

I know that the new version of Legacy will have a source wizard of sorts
that will format the sources to comform to the standards outlined by
Elizabeth Shown Mills but I wonder if there should be a data wizard that
will make sure that all of the data is in a standarized format.

Having a feature in the program where you can input your data into a book
format is not helpful if there are so many errors in how it comes out.
There is no way someone could just hit the button and POOF! a formatted
book comes out. You would have to import the entire book into Word and
clean it up which would take countless hours (might be easier to just type
it in from scratch using a printout from Legacy as your notes).

I do want to say that I really do like Legacy. It has a lot of great
features that the other programs don't have but this is a shortcoming and I
am hoping this is an area where there will be some improvement.

Re: [LegacyUG] Source Detail Citations on Import

2007-10-31 Thread Leon Chapman
Greg:

I have found it easier and you have better control to assign one
master source to a completely new Legacy file that was created from
just your Pedigree resouce file.
Then, merge this file with your master working database and do not
assign a source when you merge. The steps are summarized below, but
assumes you know how to do some of the basic things along the way.

The basic process is outlined below:

1. Create a NEW Legacy file (say - PedFile) by importing from the
GEDCOM or pedigree resource file that you have.
2. Make sure you edit all locations and sources within that file to
your likiing.
3. Chose any person and use the surname field and add a new master
source with all the details that refers to your pedigree resource
file.
4. Click on Souces for this individual and Copy this master source to
your clipboard
5. Tag everyone in your PedFile with Tag 1
6. Then go to Tools, Advanced Sourcing
  A. Choose all the option / locations for you master source to be
assigned on Where to Assign the Citations Tab.
  B. Also chose your master source from the source clipboard button.
  C. Also chose which records to use Tab and select all records with Tag 1.

This completed the assignment of your master souce to all the records
in you PedFile database.

IMPORTANT STEP HERE: Make a backup of your master database before you
do any merging of the PedFile into your master database.

7. Now, just merge the PedFile with your Master database file and do
not assign any master source -- you have already done that in steps
3-6 above.

Good luck.

Specifically, I have downloaded from the Pedigree Resource File a person's
entire submission - ~1,000 individuals. I have gone through all the
instructions in Legacy's help system (e.g. Database Management Notes by
Joseph V. Leavitt) and am ready to do the merge.

I want to add an assigned source to every individual in the file I am
merging. So I chose assign a master source. I then see that I get sent to
the list of master source citations I have in my master database – i.e. a
list that contains the master Pedigree Resource File source. Great so far.

However, the dilemma is that I want to add source detail to every individual
identifying the CD and other information of the submitter. From what I can
tell, Legacy will only allow me to assign a master source and not add the
detail that is necessary to identify the specifics of the submission.

Is there a way to do add this detail? Thanks,

Re: [LegacyUG] Master source vs events list

2007-10-12 Thread Leon Chapman
Randolph:
The page number is from the actual Census roll, page, image:
   Roll: T625_528, Page: 10B, ED: 50, Image: 0032

This is what Ancestry.com provides as their reference to the census image.

  EVENTS:
   1. He appeared on the census on Jul 1, 1910 in Pleasant Valley Co,

You might notice in event 2 above, the details of Roll:,... has been

  probably not necessary.

  MASTER SOURCES:
  4. US Federal Census - 1910 - Pleasant Valley, Cowley Co, Kansas, USA

Anyway, this is how I do the Census Sources - I am sure there are
lots of other ways, but for me, this provides a nice clean report

just started putting in people, I got about 156 of them and now have put in

wrong, as its taking so long. The think is, Ive been putting them in via the
events. Should I be making Census information a Master source list. I
thought I had this worked out, but now I'm getting confused. Im getting
mixed up as to which one I should be using.
Also, Ive been laboriously clicking the Census info into each
individual in the Census. There must be a way that I can make a list of all
the people in a Census, and then somehow add a single event (the appropriate
Census). I find the help confusing.
I searched the Archives, but hard to get an answer.
   Tks, Richard.

Re: [LegacyUG] Sort Number Portion Numerically?

2007-09-07 Thread Leon Chapman
Rob:
This is not a Legacy problem. It is a Windows / computer feature.
If you want the files to sort correctly you will need to use something like
this:

MS0001 - file name.tif
MS0010 - file name.tif
MS0100 - file name.tif
MS0002 - file name.tif
MS0020 - file name.tif
MS0200 - file name.tif
MS0003 - file name.tif
MS0030 - file name.tif

The trick is to use the same number of digits each time. Your name scheme
basically uses a blank after the digit and that is why it gets sorted early.

I have currently have the scans of my documents named in a manner similar

 MS1 - file name.tif
 MS2 - file name.tif
 MS3 - file name.tif
 MS100 - file name.tif
 MS200 - file name.tif
 MS300 - file name.tif
 MS1000 - file name.tif
 MS2000 - file name.tif
 MS3000 - file name.tif

However, when trying to attach a file/picture to a Master Source, Legacy
lists the files in this manner below. Trying to find the right one is a
 bit
of a pain when dealing with a great number of files.

 MS1 - file name.tif
 MS100 - file name.tif
 MS1000 - file name.tif
 MS2 - file name.tif
 MS200 - file name.tif
 MS2000 - file name.tif
 MS3 - file name.tif
 MS300 - file name.tif
 MS3000 - file name.tif

Is there a way to tweak Legacy to get the Load Picture window to sort
Number Portion numerically like the File ID Assistant window does with
 File
 ID's?

 Thanks!

 Rob

Re: [LegacyUG] Chart printing

2007-09-01 Thread Leon Chapman
Bill:

I don't think most people would ever want to print a chart with everyone in
their database.. I for one have over 30,000 people in my database and a
chart for everyone would probably be a block long - how do you print that
and what would you do with it if you had it?

Most people will probably only print a few generations of ancestors and/or
descendants, say 5 to 10 and place them in a frame to hang on the wall. If
I would try to print say 15 generations of all ancestors, my chart would
probably exceed 100 pages. Most fan type charts for practical purposes are
normally limited by the user to about 5-7 generations, otherwise, you cannot
read the print or it gets too large to print economically.

You might want to print a direct line ancestry chart which if you could get
5 generations per page, then a 25 generation ancestry chart would only be 5
pages - that would be ok. I have printed out over 100 generations like that
and it is basically 2 people per generation.

In Legacy 6, you can create a compact form of ancestors charts (Ancestor
Chart) that is very useful for determining what lines of ancestors that you
need to do more research on. You can start with the youngest person in your
database for your family and create say 15 generations -- preview it first
before you sent it to a printer - you may not want to print that many pages.
I would suggest you try that 1st and see if that meets your needs.

I believe there are other programs that are capable of doing this, like
Genbox. But I wish to know if Legacy is capable of this function.

I am running the deluxe version.
