This may be too late for your circumstance, but when I first moved my DB using
Gedcom, it did the 'caps' the way I didn't like, and it took 2-3 start overs,
having set the Data Format to 'Don't change what I enter' everywhere. Using
those choices, I then did the Gedcom, and it came out MY way. There are various
choices to make it come in the way you already have them done elsewhere. Choose
first, then Gedcom.

Jane,

Or just use the Sample file, supplied with all copies of Legacy - I do suggest
that changes are reversed though, otherwise the file becomes a complete mess
(not to mention that reversing changes is also good practice in using whatever
function maybe under test).

 Toni,
If you select Master from the top toolbar, you can select the Master
Location list. If you select edit, you can globally edit the locations from
that screen. I just did this in a PLAY FILE I created (and an excellent
 suggestion from this LUG).
After you edit Nz to NZ, a pop up message This change will affect all
records using this location. Do you want to save the change? appears.
Select Yes and you have changed each entry of that location.
That Master selection is quite powerful. I do suggest you create a PLAY
FILE to see all you can do with the options for locations. Please come back
to the LUG with any questions.

I am new to Legacy but not genealogy, I have just purchased and imported my

countries (except USA) have reverted to lower case and some both (i.e. Nz)

I have found the way to edit them but this only does one line at a time, I
have 7000 odd people in my tree and frankly at the moment will chuck the
programme out .. any ideas ?

This was a common bug in version 7.0.0.55. It was fixed in the most
recent update (7.0.0.76) so if you update to that, it won't happen
again (and a vast number of other formatting and display bugs have
also been fixed.) If you have the Deluxe version you can update from

Re: [LegacyUG] Help Please on Source Template Overrides

I'm seeing another problem that may have compounded my confusion
previously. I just copied the below-mentioned source to the clipboard,
then applied it to another individual. The detail screen then popped
up and I changed the information as appropriate for the new individual
and saved it. The Output Preview still shows the details for the
original Detail Screen - not the change made.

Is anyone else having this problem? Doesn't seem feasible that I would
need to do an override on the detail screen rather than just change
data and save it. Or is this the way it works?

My brain's a bit fuzzy at the moment (combination of heavy cold and cold
cures!) but I think I have worked through this correctly:

Working in the Source Detail screen, if you enter the Details on the
first tab, then click the Override tab there will be nothing entered in
the boxes, but if you click on click here to go to the overrides tab
the boxes will have the citations entered ready for you to edit.

If you copy a Source which has overrides to the Source Clipboard, then
paste it, it will paste with the overrides included and the checkbox
ticked for using that override. If you make changes to the Source
Detail and then want to incorporate these into an Override, you need to
make your Detail changes, then click the output has been overridden by
the user. Click here ... and then re-write your override sentence, not
just change the bits you have changed on the details screen.

I hope that makes sense!

[LegacyUG] Help Please on Source Template Overrides

2008-12-02 Thread Kay Fordham

Using 7.0.0.76

I've spent another half day trying to figure out the override protocol.
Never had a problem with Legacy 6. Can someone please give me a heads up on
what I am doing wrong?

I'm using Newspapers - online - by unrelated content provider.

I create the master source and save.

I need to insert volume # and issue # in addition to the page #. I need the
information in this order (largest to smallest). I input (in page block)
vol. 1, issue 10, p. 3 and save.

The Output Preview shows: p. vol. 2, issue 10, p. 3.

I hit the override button and prefill the Footnote/Endnote block. I delete
the p. before vol. 2, issue 10, p.3 and save.

The Output Preview still shows p. vol. 2, issue 10, p.3.

Yes, I can resolve the problem by entering the page number first and then
volume and issue, but this is not the way it should be. I've not been
successful in performing overrides for other sources either. I'm following
what little information is contained in the Manual and Help File, unless I'm
misinterpreting something..

Thank you!

Are you entering the page #, volume # etc in the Source Details screen
and using the Override there? If so, are you remembering to check the
box for Use this customised Footnote on reports?

That works perfectly for me. BUT, I see that if you use the Override
tab on the Master Source screen, this is ignored when you add data to
the Source Details screen. I think this might be a bug.

Yes - however, if I went back in to make another change I may have started
at the Master Source screen and then moved to the Detail screen. This may
have been the problem. I was getting some squirrelly results at times.
From now on I will be careful to start from the Detail screen only when

Are you entering the page #, volume # etc in the Source Details screen and
using the Override there? If so, are you remembering to check the box for
Use this customised Footnote on reports?

That works perfectly for me. BUT, I see that if you use the Override tab
on the Master Source screen, this is ignored when you add data to the
Source Details screen. I think this might be a bug.

Re: [LegacyUG] Help Please on Source Template Overrides

2008-12-02 Thread Kay Fordham
I'm seeing another problem that may have compounded my confusion previously.
I just copied the below-mentioned source to the clipboard, then applied it
to another individual. The detail screen then popped up and I changed the
information as appropriate for the new individual and saved it. The Output
Preview still shows the details for the original Detail Screen - not the
change made.

Is anyone else having this problem? Doesn't seem feasible that I would need
to do an override on the detail screen rather than just change data and save
it. Or is this the way it works?

Yes - however, if I went back in to make another change I may have started
at the Master Source screen and then moved to the Detail screen. This may
have been the problem. I was getting some squirrelly results at times.
From now on I will be careful to start from the Detail screen only when
making changes there.

Thank you Jenny for your help.

 June 05, 2007
Ancestry searching error from within Legacy
Ancestry.com http://ancestry.com/ has recently made changes to the way
 customers search
their site. These changes have effected Legacy's ability to
automatically search for a person in their databases. Continue reading
 for the workaround

For example, click on the Search menu from within Legacy, then click
on Search Internet for Current Person. You can now choose which
genealogy web site to search. If Ancestry.com http://ancestry.com/ is
 selected, click on
the Search button. Normally Legacy would then search Ancestry for the
currently-highlighted individual and display the results. Because of
the changes made by Ancestry, you will now receive an error message.

Fortunately, Legacy has the ability to create and modify the search
strings that are used to perform these automated searches. The
Ancestry.com http://ancestry.com/ search can easily be modified by
 following these steps:

Once you are on the Search the Internet screen, click on the
 Customize Searches button.
Click on the Select button next to Ancestry.com http://ancestry.com/
Click once on Ancestry.com http://ancestry.com/, and click on the Edit
 button.
In the field the currently begins with http://service.bfast.com...,
replace all of the text in this field with this new link:

 http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?rank=0tips=0gsfn=[GivenNames]gsln=[Surname]sx=gs1co=1%2cAll+Countriesgs1pl=1%2c+year=[BirthYear]yearend=[DeathYear]sbo=0sbor=ufr=0wp=4%3b_8002%3b_8003srchb=rprox=1db=ti=0ti.si=0gl=allgsgss=ansmpso=1o_iid=21416o_lid=21416
Click Save, click Select, click Close, now click Search.
Legacy's Research Guidance section also has links to individual
databases at Ancestry.com http://ancestry.com/. For example, on the
 Preliminary Survey tab,
clicking on the Local Histories tab provides an automated listing of
local/county histories of the areas in which your ancestor lived. Some
of these books are available online. If you click on the Online button
for books that are available at Ancestry, you will still be presented
with Ancestry's error message. Currently, there is not a way to update
the link. However, the book is still available at Ancestry, you will
just have to temporarily manually look it up on their site.

If you have any questions about performing automated searches, please
don't hesitate to contact our support team. We will continue to work
hard to provide a future update that will correct these links, but for
those who want the immediate fix, please follow the steps above.

RE: [LegacyUG] Help Please

2007-10-12 Thread Sherry/Support
Because, as I said, the URL is quite long - and several people have already
emailed it to the list. 99.9% of the time the URL gets broken up quite
badly in emails and won't work correctly because it doesn't copy/paste
correctly into the URL field without a lot of fiddling around (pasting the
URL in a document, making sure that there are no line breaks at the end of
the three or four lines that the URL has and *then* copying and pasting into
the field)

That's why I recommend that you go to our website where you'll have a better
chance of getting the URL intact. I'm not trying to be difficult - I'm just
trying to make it easier on you!

Thanks for using Legacy.

Interesting - you should be getting the correct URL with that build and
after resetting the search file and folder.

If I email the link, then it's going to get broken and you'll have a mess on
your hands. Please go to our website at

http://WWW.LegacyFamilyTree.Com/Help.asp Solutions by Error Description

where you'll find the solution and URL under Internet Searches section.

It's also in the archives, but I'm sure the link is going to be broken
there.

Thanks for using Legacy.

Re: [LegacyUG] Help Please

2007-10-12 Thread Ron Taylor

Evert,

I tried the search string you posted and it works well. The URL in the
Legacy help page for the Ancestry.com error is a bit different and it
likewise works well. Could you provide some comments on the various pieces
of the URL and how they work? Specifically, is there something in the URL
or that could be added to the URL to set the Exact Matches Only check box?

Thanks for your info.

No problem here . . . . Just tried searching Ancestry.com - Legacy
transmitted the search query, Ancestry performed the search, and I got
the resulting hits displayed in my browser just fine. No need for an
update to version 6 to fix this.

From the Legacy News:

June 05, 2007
Ancestry searching error from within Legacy
Ancestry.com http://ancestry.com/ has recently made changes to
the way customers search
their site. These changes have effected Legacy's ability to
automatically search for a person in their databases. Continue reading
for the workaround

For example, click on the Search menu from within Legacy, then click
on Search Internet for Current Person. You can now choose which
genealogy web site to search. If Ancestry.com
http://ancestry.com/ is selected, click on
the Search button. Normally Legacy would then search Ancestry for the
currently-highlighted individual and display the results. Because of
the changes made by Ancestry, you will now receive an error message.

Fortunately, Legacy has the ability to create and modify the search
strings that are used to perform these automated searches. The
Ancestry.com http://ancestry.com/ search can easily be
modified by following these steps:

Once you are on the Search the Internet screen, click on the
Customize Searches button.
Click on the Select button next to Ancestry.com http://ancestry.com/
Click once on Ancestry.com http://ancestry.com/, and click on
the Edit button.
In the field the currently begins with http://service.bfast.com
http://service.bfast.com/...,
replace all of the text in this field with this new link:

http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?rank=0tips=0gsfn=[GivenNames]gsln=[Surname]sx=gs1co=1%2cAll+Countriesgs1pl=1%2c+year=[BirthYear]yearend=[DeathYear]sbo=0sbor=ufr=0wp=4%3b_8002%3b_8003srchb=rprox=1db=ti=0ti.si=0gl=allgsgss=ansmpso=1o_iid=21416o_lid=21416

http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?rank=0tips=0gsfn=%5BGivenNames%5Dgsln=%5BSurname%5Dsx=gs1co=1%2cAll+Countriesgs1pl=1%2c+year=%5BBirthYear%5Dyearend=%5BDeathYear%5Dsbo=0sbor=ufr=0wp=4%3b_8002%3b_8003srchb=rprox=1db=ti=0ti.si=0gl=allgsgss=ansmpso=1o_iid=21416o_lid=21416
Click Save, click Select, click Close, now click Search.
Legacy's Research Guidance section also has links to individual
databases at Ancestry.com http://ancestry.com/. For example, on
the Preliminary Survey tab,
clicking on the Local Histories tab provides an automated listing of
local/county histories of the areas in which your ancestor lived. Some
of these books are available online. If you click on the Online
button
for books that are available at Ancestry, you will still be presented
with Ancestry's error message. Currently, there is not a way to update
the link. However, the book is still available at Ancestry, you will
just have to temporarily manually look it up on their site.

If you have any questions about performing automated searches, please
don't hesitate to contact our support team. We will continue to work
hard to provide a future update that will correct these links, but
for
those who want the immediate fix, please follow the steps above.

You need to set up a Search as follows:

Select the Search Menu, then Find ... Select the Detailed Search tab.
Under Look for whom select Individual, under Where to look select Death
Date, under How to look select After and under What to look for select
1858.

Now tick the box for Second Condition and make sure the radio button for
And is selected. Make selections in each of the boxes as you did above,
but choosing Individual, Death Date, Before and 1946.

Now tick the box for Third Condition and again select And. Make
selections as above, choosing Individual, Death Place, Contains and
England.

Finally, select the radio button for Clear List before this search and
then click the Create List button.

Check your firewall settings. The Legacy update is considered a new

Personally I only turn off the programs which I am using eg Messenger Programs,

never caused a problem and I use AVG Virus Protection and this has always been
OK as well.

Art, Glad all is now OK. I would have mentioned Registry Mechanic which I
also use under those circumstances but Sherry shouts at me when I do! For
the benefit of others I would stress that Registry Mechanic is a register

Legacy now starts clean and much faster!

Art, Have you considered uninstalling Easy CD and DVD Creator deleting all
it's files and then trying Legacy? If all is well you could then reinstall
Easy CD and DVD Creator. Although it's not unknown for a program to
commandeer a Windows dll for its own use I fail to see why this should
suddenly happen when both programs have been installed for a long time so
I doubt if that is the case here.

You could try raising this on the forums for this product:

Better still, from what I've heard of the program, you could uninstall
it and get some better DVD-burning software such as Nero!

RE: [LegacyUG] Help please!!

2006-11-30 Thread Sherry/Support
 Art,

We see this occasionally with this and a couple of other programs.

You might go to the Control Panel Add/Remove programs and see if there's
an installer listed for the program. If so, remove the installer.

The other option would be to uninstall Legacy and then reinstall, making
sure you have all other programs shut down and your anti-virus software
disabled when you install Legacy.

Thanks for using Legacy.

RE: [LegacyUG] Help please!!

2006-11-30 Thread Sherry/Support
George,

That's the problem - we're running into this a lot with overly aggressive
anti-spyware programs. They're removing Windows system files that spyware
programs are using without realizing that other legitimate programs use
those files also.

Please reinstall Legacy and don't allow the program to remove the cia files
the next time, if you have any control over it. Make sure you have all
other programs shut down and your anti-virus software disabled when you
install Legacy.

Also, please contact Support for that program and let them know that it's
removing files necessary for Legacy to run. If you give them the link to
download Legacy, then they can check it out and fix their program!

I've found that these companies are very cooperative in fixing their
scanner.

Thanks for using Legacy.

Re: [LegacyUG] Help please!!

2006-11-30 Thread Chris Coward

Hi,
I've had similar problems but not with Legacy. Generally running certain
programs invoked the Windows installer and asked me to insert the Dell
Support CD. After a search I found an answer and it seems that some registry
entries get corrupted. There is a Microsoft utility to sort it which is on
my PC at work. I will try to find the details tomorrow.

No check box, and it might be hours after I boot up before I start Legacy.
Like just now, I've been at the computer over 2 hours, start Legacy, and

Easy DVD what

Does it have a little check box for if you never want to see it again?

Make sure it isn't something else that happens to always start up a few
minutes after you boot up your computer.

Always do a backup before you delete, especially when the registry is
concerned. Just a FYI for later. There are some registry values that can
really mess up your computer if you aren't aware of what is being deleted
and the consequences of deleting it.
Good luck

Art, Have you considered uninstalling Easy CD and DVD Creator deleting all
it's files and then trying Legacy? If all is well you could then reinstall
Easy CD and DVD Creator. Although it's not unknown for a program to
commandeer a Windows dll for its own use I fail to see why this should
suddenly happen when both programs have been installed for a long time so I
doubt if that is the case here.

Hi George,
Does your Spyware software enable you to reverse what it did? Many do
- so long as you take advantage of that feature.

If not, try reinstalling Legacy to restore the deleted files.

Error 429 is on the Legacy troubleshooting web page but I it sounds
more likely that you've removed important files with your Spyware software.
