RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy Charting - Married Cousins

2009-10-30 Thread smegraw

I came across an old post from Geoff dated 26 March 2008 saying that
suppressing duplicate lines is one of the items on the to do list for Legacy
charting. It seems it still needs to be addressed (unless there is something
I'm missing).

Robin,

You have confused a product from Ancestry.com with Legacy Family Tree by
Millennia Corp. Millennia Corp and Legacy Family Tree has nothing to do
with the Legacy Surname web site in your link. We do have a product that
is part of Legacy Family Tree called Legacy Charting but that is a
stand-alone product that is installed on your own computer it is not a
web based application.

There hasn't been an update for about a year for

Does anyone know when such an update may be released?

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Charting Question

2009-10-24 Thread jeffma...@orthohelp.com
FWIW, I gave up on Legacy's charting quite some time ago. I now use
"FamilyTree SuperTools v2" (
http://www.whollygenes.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?screen=FTST ) from the makers
of TMG. It works much much better, allows coloring and sort of great things.
It cane even import Legacy files directly.

I think Legacy should drop its Charting program and adopt this one. Far
superior. It actually comes from a third party.

If you are to get 12 children across an 11" page, each box is going to have
to be quite a bit less than 1", allowing for even a tiny pace between each one.
At that size, would you be able to read the names, never mind any other

get 12 children onto one sheet.

P#2 I have the same issue. I wanted to make a chart for my cousins showing our
common ancestors, but I can only do it on one side unless I center it on each

Q#1 You can add additional information, but I don't think that includes
military or events. In the appearance tab, go to box items. For military,
though, you can
insert an icon of the relevant military branch and put the icon in/near
the people's boxes. Works best for small charts, where you don't have
to do this hundreds of times!

Q#2 I haven't noticed a price difference, but haven't tested either.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Charting Problem

2009-06-30 Thread Diane Szabo
Ron, currently it isn't installed. Because of the error messages I deleted
it. But, it installed on my "C" drive. Should I have selected another
location? I do have an external drive to do that if it will work. My
Legacy Family file is installed on my "C" drive. (C:\Legacy\Legacy.exe)

I appreciate your message.

I submitted this problem on June 26 but have not had resolution as
of right now. Can anyone help?

I am still having problems with Legacy Charting. I deleted
the program I had originally downloaded as instructed by Sherry, then
closed all programs, then downloaded the program again from the Legacy
home

page. Here is what I receive after downloading:

Access violation at address 00TDC414 in module legacy charting.exe.
Read of address 000C. I clicked on OK, but then I got
a second error message, this time reading: Access violation at address
008A41CF in module Legacy charting.exe Read of address 000C.

As I told Sherry, I am using Vista on a 64-bit computer which is a
new computer. Legacy Charting originally worked just fine on
my 32-bit, Windows XP computer. Is the fact that I went from 32-bit to
64-bit the problem? If so, when will Legacy charting be compatible with my
computer?

Please advise.

You probably have Charting installed to a folder you have no access to.
Sherry posted instructions how to solve these problem a few days ago,
but I don't remember in which thread.

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy charting

2009-05-16 Thread Boyd Miller
Create your chart in the normal way, and then Publish > Export to file > PDF
(or other as you choose), define the folder and file name and save the
chart. It can then be printed from the .pdf file to whatever size your
printer or print shop can provide.

Can a saved legacy chart be opened in any other programme other than Legacy?
I was wanting to get a fan chart printed and laminated for each of my
children. It seems an expensive process to print and send it to New Zealand
from America if the only option is to use legacy publishing centre. Cheers

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy Charting pdf file sizes - Work around

2009-04-11 Thread Sherry/Support
Even easier yet is to get one of the free PDF generators and print to that
directly from Legacy Charting. Click on the round button in the upper left
corner to access your printer and select the PDF printer.

I use PDF995, which can be found at http://www.PDF995.com. It works fine on
Vista, if that's an issue. I have another one that doesn't work as well.

Also the third party printer driver will allow you to print the PDF by pages
rather than as one large wall chart.

Thanks for using Legacy.

For others who might need it, here is a work around for the large files
produced by Legacy Charting.

Publish from Legacy Charting as a tiff file (instead of a pdf file). Open
that tiff file in your preferred graphic program (I use Paint Shop Pro) and
print it from there as a pdf using any of many free pdf creators that
pretend to be "printers". Resulting pdf file was one tenth the original pdf
file and printed nicely on regular paper.

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy Charting pdf file sizes

2009-04-10 Thread ronald ferguson

Maybe Jeff, but Legacy Charting is mainly designed (as I understand it) for
producing wall charts, rather than for reports or web pages.

Jeff,

The size of any chart file obviously depends on how many generations and
hence how many people are in it. If you reduce the size it will more than
likely become unreadable.

Legacy Charting creates some beautiful charts. However the size of the pdf
files it creates are huge. To large to send out as email attachments.

Is there a way to reduce the size of these huge pdf files?

maybe you will see something different when you enter your results. let me
know what shows in the chart types for dna in legacy charting. what i hoped
to see was a way for legacy to find matches of dna information once it is
entered for two or more people.

Hi, Harold,

I use Legacy and love it and I also had my DNA tested and have the results
ready to enter. But, like you, I'm curious as to what type of report would
include the DNA data. Please let me know what you might find out. We might
just have to go directly to Legacy for help on this.

i am curious if anyone is using legacy to record dna test results and how
effectively legacy or legacy charting support reviewing that information. i
have not started entering any information yet but i dont see anything in legacy
reports that suggests a report using the dna data. legacy charting has chart
types for dna but no explanation of how the charts are different from other
charts or how dna data might be filtered.

You could try to save the photos to a folder on the same drive as the

I figured out 1. The photo was corrupted - how, I don't know but I
re-cropped from the original and it was fine. 3. I found a (bad)
picture of said partner and put it in. I couldn't figure out how to get
rid of him (not that there's anything wrong with him, just didn't want a
blank space in the chart where his face should be.) The chart's gone
off for printing now so I don't want to know about anything I could have
done better for at least another year.

Any suggestions? Make a CD of your chart and take it to your local blueprint
shop, etc. They can print it out in any size or shape you want. I plan to
do this with mine; with the 8-1/2" X 11" sheets, I would have 20 sheets!

If you go to page setup from the menu round button, goto page setup. The
dialog comes up. You should have a choice next to your the printer you are
going to use. That has a properties button next to it, press it, then if you
have a advanced button, you can set it to any size. I just set one to 72"
just to test it. You have many choices.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Charting update

2008-08-17 Thread DimJim
While trying to update my Legacy Charting to 7.0.118 today I have
encountered the same problem as described below.
I think the update installs into the program file where the first
pre-release was installed. I have uninstalled that pre-release
edition, but when updating from 7.0.110, I end up with TWO instances
of Legacy Charting installed - one within the c\Legacy7 folder and the
other in the c\program files\millenia folder.
Has anyone stumbled across a "fix" for this yet?
I was thinking of uninstalling Legacy V7 and then downloading and
installing the latest from the Legacy site with (hopefully) Charting
7.0.118 included and the whole shibang might get installed into the
c\Legacy folder.
Any words of wisdom?
Jim

It sounds as though you have exactly the same problem as I had - and

Well, after all this time waiting for the folks at Legacy to solve the
"problem", I think I may have solved it myself. Previously (months ago)
I had Googled the error message and came up with a great many hits. Many
involved a USB drive that had been removed or had the letter
re-assigned. I have some USB drives and I played with them trying to
stop the error. I had no luck. After I posted my original message below,
I Googled the error message again and found a result that I hadn't seen
before. This led me to try something I hadn't done before.

My HP printer has two slots for memory cards that show up as drives on
my PC. I don't ever use them so I went to Device Manager and disabled
them. Problem solved - so far. I still don't know why Legacy Charting
was the only program to cause the error to appear.

Anyway, if you have a problem like the one described below try playing
with any USB drives and don't forget the memory card slots.

Happy Hunting,
David

Still no joy.

My guess is that I am one of few people having this problem so it was
placed low in priority. I believe it is actually Windows issuing the
error but it is caused by something that Legacy Charting is doing.
Previously, I had gotten this identical error in another unrelated
piece of software. When I inquired about the problem on their forum, I
found that there were indeed a few others getting the same error. The
software authors eventually eliminated the error but offered no reason
why it had occurred.

Here's what happens. When ever I try to create a new chart or make
changes to an existing chart that involves adding people the error is
created. Clicking on any of the 3 buttons numerous times will
eventually clear the error and Legacy Charting will continue to run as
if nothing had happened - until the next time I try to add someone to
the chart.

Here is a link to show you what the error looks like:
http://www.judivad.com/lc/ChartingError.jpg

Has anyone else seen this error, either in Legacy Charting or another
piece of software?

David

By adding people I meant something like increasing the number of
generations being displayed or switching to a parent or spouse as the
primary person. This would cause the need to add different people to the
chart.

I don't think you can simply insert an individual.

I have all the same fonts available in Charting as in other Windows

A related point: pictures do not seem to be available as an option in Fan

just happened to be using charting when i noticed the update alert.
after downloading the update, legacy charting restarted but when i selected
the file i was working on i got an error popup. there is no message number,
just

"Cannot create file "C:\Program
Files\Millenia\LegacyCharting7\data\DES\Default.theme". The system
cannot find the path specified.

i exited the software, started Legacy 7.0 and selected charting from the
tool bar and did not get an error. i then loaded the file that failed
without getting an error. however, the message at the bottom of the screen
shows "New Version Available: 7.0.101" The tips and updates tab shows:
Installed version 7.0.097
Available version 7.0.101

i suppose this means the update didnt take?

Subject: [LegacyUG] legacy charting 7 v7.0.101.764

just happened to be using charting when i noticed the update alert. after
downloading the update, legacy charting restarted but when i selected the file
i was working on i got an error popup. there is no message number, just

  "Cannot create file "C:\Program
Files\Millenia\LegacyCharting7\data\DES\Default.theme". The system cannot
find the path specified.

i exited the software, started Legacy 7.0 and selected charting from the tool
bar and did not get an error. i then loaded the file that failed without
getting an error. however, the message at the bottom of the screen shows "New
Version Available: 7.0.101" The tips and updates tab shows:
  Installed version 7.0.097
  Available version 7.0.101

i suppose this means the update didnt take?

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy Charting Version?

2008-06-09 Thread Dave Miller

Jenny,

I did the same thing. uninstalled charting from "Add or Remove Programmes"
and it removed the new one. The pre-release remained.

Just re-install Legacy V7 again over the top of the one you've got and it
will skip most files and re-install charting. That will show up again in
"Add or Remove Programmes". I can find no entry in "Add or Remove
Programmes" for the pre-release version nor any way to uninstall in the
programme's folder itself. As someone else said, it is in C/Programme files/
Millennia. The new charting for V7 is in the C/Legacy folder. I'm quoting
the defaults. The pre-release is "LegacyChart7" and the new one is
"LegacyCharting7". The same naming applies to the shortcuts in the "Start"
menu.

We can remove all the shortcuts for the pre-release and even delete the
contents of the Millennia folder but I can see no way to uninstall properly.

 Regards,
  Dave (NZ).

Which doesn't actually answer the OP's question about whether it's correct
for Legacy Charting to show "Pre-Release Version" when accessed from within
Legacy 7.

When I downloaded Legacy 7 and installed, I don't think it asked me where I
wanted to install it and it went into C:\, thus leaving untouched Legacy 6
which is in C:\Program Files. To be honest, I'm not sure where the
Pre-Release version of Charting was installed, but having read that I should
uninstall it, I did so from Control Panel.

Now I see that Legacy Charting shows "Legacy Charting Deluxe (Pre-Release
7.0.094)" on the Title Bar.

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy Charting Version?

2008-06-09 Thread ronald ferguson

Jenny & Dave,

It can be removed by going to the Registry. However, rather than that, it is
possibly not being deleted at the moment because it is still valid until 17
June (I think). Maybe on that date it has a self-uninstaller or perhaps Luc
could uninstall at the time of the next update.

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy Charting Version.

2008-06-08 Thread Dave Miller

Sorry, I just found the uninstall file, must have missed it before. It's
called "unins000.exe" and is in C/Programme Files/Millennia/LegacyChart7

  Dave (NZ).)

 Regards,
  Dave (NZ).

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Charting question

2008-06-08 Thread Robert57P via Gmail
I don't see how to do it directly via charting, but here's a method that
should work:

Exit the charting program
In Legacy, edit the person you do not want displayed
Click the PRIVACY SETTINGS button (bottom right)
Select INVISIBLE option (or PRIVATE should work too)
Save
Save
Still in Legacy, move to the person you want to be the "base" of your chart
Click the CHARTING icon
Pick your chart
Click PRIVACY OPTIONS from the charting tool bar (HOME tab)
Click SUPPRESS PRIVATE INDIVIDUALS

They (and the branches above (or below) them) should disappear

Just remember to go back in Legacy once you are done and put the person's
privacy settings back if you want them included normally in other reports
and such.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Charting Background Question

2008-06-08 Thread Cathy

1) You need to update Legacy Charting separately from within Charting.

2) I think you'll need to flip your picture outside of Charting - but
the transparency slider is on the same dialogue as where you choose
the Background.

Which doesn't actually answer the OP's question about whether it's
correct for Legacy Charting to show "Pre-Release Version" when accessed
from within Legacy 7.

When I downloaded Legacy 7 and installed, I don't think it asked me
where I wanted to install it and it went into C:\, thus leaving
untouched Legacy 6 which is in C:\Program Files. To be honest, I'm not
sure where the Pre-Release version of Charting was installed, but having
read that I should uninstall it, I did so from Control Panel.

Now I see that Legacy Charting shows "Legacy Charting Deluxe
(Pre-Release 7.0.094)" on the Title Bar.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Charting Pre-release - SUCCESS! off topic reply

2008-06-06 Thread Trippsibs5
Kris wrote:

I'm going to a Family Reunion in less than 2 weeks and decided to try
printing a descendants chart using the pre-release version of Legacy
Charting. I have to report that the resulting printout was FABULOUS!! I
had 5 generations, printed in color, with 272 names, pictures, range of
lifetime (e.g., 1856-1904 or 1950-). I didn't want to clutter the boxes
with too much information, just wanted a great visual for all to see and
find themselves and relationship to others.
I was able to "grab and pull" the chart margin (top/bottom) from 11" to
22" (the size of the color copier it would be printing on), and I was able
to move the various generations up and down en masse to better fill the
page, and also reposition some individuals to spread out some crowded
areas. The chart was 8' long. After fiddling with it for a pleasant
visual format, including changing the borders on the boxes and using a
generational color scheme, I saved the file using the "save as" feature.
The next day I added a few more pictures to my database and pulled up the
existing chart. The new pictures were there, but I don't recall if I had
to do a "refresh" or "update" to my existing file (sorry, just don't
remember). I saved the chart again, and then used the "publish" button to
save it as a pdf. I took the file on a USB flash drive to Staples
(stationery/office supplies store) copy center and they printed it on photo
quality paper. It turned
out just the way I wanted it!! (and just the way it looked on my computer
screen). It took about 3 hours to print, but the resulting chart is
absolutely gorgeous!!
I haven't heard anything about Legacy Charting [pre-release] for a while
now and wanted to remind folks of this option. With all the griping and
complaining lately, I also wanted to post a POSITIVE message and to say
THANK YOU to Millennia Corp for such a great product!!! I'm just thrilled
at the result. I know the chart will be the centerpiece of the reunion and
I can't wait to show it off.
Kris in Texas

Kris,
I know your chart will be a hit. They told me the the family tree chart for
my Mother's 1950 something Family Reunion was a hit.

6 generations on one chart.

They started with a blank 9 something foot by 5 something foot paper on the
dining room table after the Thanksgiving dinner of 1953 dishes were
cleared. The project began with promises to complete long before the
already scheduled Christmas diner.
At the end of Summer 1954, when the 1900+ entries were meticulously hand
printed on the chart, the then 20 something graphics artist looked at his
grandfather and said 'I have an idea'.

They trecked that huge paper out to the backyard, spread it on the grass
and took a picture.

They developed the print and each family attending the 1955 reunion
received a 3 something foot by 2 something foot copy of the tree.
Since then, many more copies have been passed out and passed on to family
members. The original is still in the possession of the, now
great-grandfather, graphics artist grandson. I just found that my mother
has a copy of the poster sized negative, so I'll be able to print more and
keep the family tree of this Pennsylvania roots family going on and on.
May Your tree will not only be a centerpiece for the reunion, but the
beginning of a family tradition.

The message you quote includes "* Added the ability to display the

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Charting Pre-Release 7.093

2008-05-12 Thread John Carter
I just checked and the installed version on my PC is 7.0.094. Even though
the Messages show the new update of 7.0.093 with a date of 12 May, the
automatic update in the software doesn't see the online file as a new
version. Looks like there was a slip-up in the version numbering -
probably too much going on with the pre-release of V 7 at NGS...

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Charting Pre-Release 7.093

2008-05-12 Thread Cathy

Hi Mike,

Have you closed and reopened Legacy Charting? A new update doesn't
appear immediately in Legacy or Legacy Charting. I'm not sure how
often the programs check for an update apart from at Startup.

If it still isn't there, I'd suggest there is something wrong with
your installation and it would be best to uninstall and reinstall
from a full download.

The beta of Legacy Charting update certainly works. That's how I
generally update and just updated today.

Two things.

a) The note had version 7.093 in the title - we're already at 7.094

b) Your instructions *still* don't work!

Step 1 - fine.
Step 2 - No Download New Update Now link in the upper left.

Thus, automatic updates DON'T work!

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy Charting - more questions/request on functionality

2008-05-05 Thread ronald ferguson

Cathy,

So basically, expected to be a free add-on with Legacy7, the facilities
depending on whether Standard or Delux and chargeable to non Legacy users. I
say "add-on" as I recollect Geoff having said that this is how it will be
supplied.

I can see a potential problem if a version, even limited, is issued free to
Standard Veersion users as presumably it would be available to non-Legacy users
as well, however this is something for Legacy not us - thank goodness :-).

2008-05-04 Thread Cathy

Hi Ron,

I'm just recalling things that have been said.

Yes Legacy Charting will be part of Legacy 7 but just like Legacy 6
comes in Standard and Deluxe, so Legacy 7 will. The Charting
component will also be limited in Standard version just as Legacy is.

However, Legacy Charting will also come as a stand alone program so
that it can be used by people who for some reason use other genealogy
programs. You'll note it can search for PAF, FTM and Roots Magic
files as well as Legacy files and Gedcoms.

Rodney,

Your statement ...
"As far as I can see, it will be superior to Progeny's product."
calls for a comment (running the risk of getting this thread banned too ;-)

I have been using Legacy Charting Companion for a long time, and apart from
a more fancy GUI (for better, for worse), Legacy Charting is FAR behind
Progeny in terms of functionality.

Erik,

You are very wrong in your supposition.

Luc Comeau, who works for Millenium is hard at work perfecting Legacy
Charting - I am a beta tester - is certainly NOT sub-contracted to Progeny
and has nothing to do with them.

Legacy Charting will be a part of Legacy v7 and will also be available as a
standalone product. As far as I can see, it will be superior to Progeny's
product.

We just have to be patient for the next release of the best genealogy
program available!

Al,

A clarification: the 'Legacy Charting 7' we are debating here is a Millennia
product and is going to be an integral part of the eternal
soon-to-be-released Legacy 7. 'Legacy Charting Companion' is a Progeny
product and is as such independent of 'Legacy Charting 7'. However, as
Progeny has all the charting technology at hand, perhaps Millennia have
subcontracted the development of 'Legacy Charting 7' to Progeny, but that’s
just me speculating.

Same thing here Erik!

I do second all your remarks and "requests".

Version 7.0, as we've seen so far, lacks many "basic" and "immediate"
features.

I sincerely hope that Legacy Charting development team is reading to these
postings and will take adequate corrective actions.

BTW, will this new version of Legacy Charting Companion also be distributed
as simple add-in (to those who don't want to upgrade to Legacy 7.0 when it
comes out)?

Has anybody heard anything about upgrade fees (to owners of previous
versions of Legacy Charting Companion, more precisely v.2)?

By the same token, will there be any upgrade fees (to Legacy 7.0)?

I believe they should take into account "regulars" who have purchased
several previous versions (such as v 4.0, 5.0, and 6.0).

Best,

Al

As i can't find the functions mentioned below, i guess this message is aimed
at the Legacy Charting development team as change requests, but should
anyone on this list know how-to I'll be happy to hear about it.

- undo changes (Ctrl-Z)
- aligning selected boxes, vertically and horizontally
- snap to grid
- changing colour and shape of individual or group of boxes, independently
of the selected theme
- a colour theme differentiating spouses from blood relatives

Thanks

Hi Al,

Please note that Legacy Charting Companion from Progeny Software and
Legacy Charting from Millennia are two different programs from two
different companies.

Legacy Charting has been pre-released. It will be released with
Legacy 7 but also available as a stand alone program. Like Legacy
there will be a free version that is limited and a pay version. The
current full pre-release version has an expiry date built in.
