re: [LegacyUG] Living list
You can create a Search List (a subset of the Name List) for people whose Living status is Yes: 1. Click Search on the menu bar and select Find to open the Search window. 2. Click on the Detail Search tab and then set the following 'Primary Conditions': Look for whom? = Individual Where to look = Living How to look = Equal To What to look for = YES You are now ready to create your Search List. 1. Select 'Clear List before this search' and then click Create List. The Search List (a subset of the Name List) will then open. Typically when I check their subscriptions, they appear to be subscribed and I just click Save to reset and close their screen and all is well. Emails might stop being send to people when their number of bounces reaches 200 or it may be due to the number of subscribers some how (11,669) as of now or ??? Brian, thank you for your most thorough feed back. You found a lot of things, including our competitor's knowledge base (we have one too). But what you did not find is their internal system used to track, categorize and prioritize issues as well as manage programming projects. This may be what some of our users want access to. However, these kinds of systems are available only to employees plus approved beta testers who have signed non-disclosure agreements. To access this kind of system you must have a username and password -- or commit the criminal act of hacking the server. And by the way, these kinds of systems are secret for good reason. Amen! Another much large list. BINGO! Another nice feature is on the right side of the Knowledge Base page where you can click on Check Your Existing Requests. I really don't need a list of all bugs. I agree that might be an unwanted thing for products with a lot of bugs (which means all products). I have never really seen a list of bugs for any other products either. What I would like, though, is a way to be able to know the status of MY reported bugs. For other products, once I would report a bug, customer service would give me a status of when that might be fixed, next update, next release, never, etc. And they would usually offer to provide me a status on a weekly, monthly, etc. basis. This may be an unfair because those were all larger companies (IBM, HP, Microsoft, Amazon, etc.) and Legacy just doesn't have resources for providing statuses. I can't ever remember reporting a problem (even with smaller companies), being told yes indeed it is a bug and we'll put it in our tracking system. And then never being able to find out anymore about it. But that's kind of the way it feels with Legacy. RE: [LegacyUG] Same sex Marriages
Adrian, It's not secrecy at all. Some changes like allowing same sex relationships/marriages affect many aspects of Legacy, like reports, events, file maintenance, etc. It takes time and testing. I presume things that crash Legacy and affect the largest numbers of users probably get the programmer's first priority. In addition, the programmers are always thinking ahead to the next version while trying to work on things in the current version. We have a bug tracking system as well as a list of suggestions made by users that the programmers make use of. I image that it all can get complicated. So we never know how long beta testing will take and what issues testers might find. I am now using the latest version 8 but have not in the past encountered any issues in using the software and have never had to resort to a forum such as this. In the past a General note has been added describing details of same sex relationships where the parties are keen for this to be recorded. Over recent years same sex marriage have become legal in many countries and 3 families in my tree have such a marriage and understandably expect their marriage to be treated as any other marriage which is required by law. One such family has children with the same sex people legal parents. The next family tree is due to be published in 6 weeks' time. I have been using Legacy for over 20 years and have a tree with about 7000 names including over 4000 living, most of which are recorded with full contact details including email phone and physical addresses and occupation. The next family tree is due to be published in 6 weeks' time. re: [LegacyUG] Housecleaning
Barton, It sounds like a good plan to me. Too many old backup files can be confusing and they take up disk space. I try to keep just two or three of the most recent backups. Too many copies of your fdb file saved with slightly different file names (or the same file name but in different folders) can also can problems if a user gets confused about which one is current. Data can get lost, not by Legacy but because bad file management practices. Jim Technical Support Legacy Family Tree Original Message From: Barton Lewis bartonle...@optonline.net Sent: Tuesday, August 11, 2015 7:13 PM To: legacyusergroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: [LegacyUG] Housecleaning All my Legacy files are stored in the Data subfolder of Legacy Family Tree in the Documents folder under my name (I think). These files are zip files of my data and media, it appears, and have a date and time in the filename (very nice of Legacy to do that - I don't remember telling it to). There are dozens of them, and I'd like to be sure I can delete most - I want to keep (as Brian suggested) the backup files for the current month and the last one from the prior month, and delete all else. This pertains to any fdb file that I want to keep, in addition to my main file. Does this all sound safe and sound? Am I missing anything? With this update we really need the Legacy FamilySearch feature to be used and tested. Please try everything you normally do. Share data back and forth with FamilySearch, Merge Duplicates, etc. If you are LDS is everything related to ordinance working for you. If you are not LDS (you won't see LDS ordinance items) but everything else should still work and needs to be tested. re: [LegacyUG] Search Function Anomalies
Brian, I have confirmed this bug and entered it into our bug tracker as Detailed Search issue 5815. Jim Legacy Family Tree Technical Support Original Message From: Brian L. Lightfoot br...@the-lightfoots.com Sent: Sunday, July 19, 2015 1:07 PM To: legacyusergroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: [LegacyUG] Search Function Anomalies I've come across two different problems with the Search function and since they are not related to one another, I'll post them separately to avoid confusion. The first problem occurs with the Find Next/Previous buttons. Apparently upon the creation of a Search List, there must be an internal pointer to the very first item/person on the Search List. If you have a very large Search List and have clicked on Find Next multiple times but then for some reason your attention is drawn to another person much further down in the Search List and Select that person, the internal pointer remains wherever it was. That may sound like a good design but what happens if you just want to skip several dozen family names or even a hundred or more? For example, if you have stepped through 50 names in a Search List of 500 names, but then wanted to jump to name number 300 in the list (by double clicking it or clicking on it once and clicking on Select). That seems to work well but then you want to continue by going to the next name where you are currently at, namely number 301, you'd think Find Next would get you there. Unfortunately, it does not. Clicking on Find Next will get you all the way back to name number 51. So the big question is if this is how it is supposed to work? I've removed v7.5 from my current computer so I can't check to see if the function has changed. RE: [LegacyUG] Potential Problem with dates
Ron, . You could also try exporting your records into a new Legacy family file: Click on File Export Export to a new Legacy Family File. Give your new family file a name and click Save and the Legacy Export screen will open. Click the Privacy Options button to open the Privacy Options screen. In the lower half of the screen, under Override Private Settings, click the Check All button and then click Save. In the Legacy Export screen check mark Include general To-Do items and then click Start the Export. If the AutoSource Reminder screen opens, click the Don't Assign a Source button. The export will begin. When it's complete click OK. When asked Would you like to open the file you just export to? click the Yes button. Use the new family file and delete the old one when you are satisfied the Potential Problems date error is fixed. . If the Legacy export doesn't fix the problem, try exporting your records to a GEDCOM file and then import the GEDCOM back into Legacy. If you use the SourceWriter to create sources, please be aware that your SourceWriter sources will be converted to the Basic Source system so do this step as a last resort. 1) Click on File Export GEDCOM File. The GEDCOM Export window appears. 2) In the Produce file for: box, select Legacy (this is the default. It should already be selected.). 3) Click the Privacy Options button to open the Privacy Options screen. 4) In the lower half of the screen, under Override Private Settings, click the Check All button and then click Save. 5) When you are ready to export, click the Select File Name and START EXPORT button. Legacy prompts you for a file name and location, and then creates the GEDCOM file for you. Remember the location on your hard drive where you save the GEDCOM file. You will need to be able to locate it in order to import into the other Legacy program. When the export is finished, import it back into Legacy as a new family file. Click on File and select Import GEDCOM File and follow the prompts. . If all else fails, restore your family file from your backup copy. re: [LegacyUG] About merging order
Ian, When merging duplicate records within your family file, Legacy's Automerge feature can be used to automatically merge records that it determines are most certainly the same person. After the first pair of duplicates is encountered that can be AutoMerged, Legacy offers to run through the entire merge and do all the remaining Automerge pairs all at once. This can usually save a substantial amount of time. This option is called IntelliPass. To let Legacy continue with this pass, click Yes. re: [LegacyUG] Lockup, wrong record displayed and Error 381 (Strange behavour)
Adrian, Then it's probably not a family file problem, but a possibly program problem. Intermittent problems can be exasperating. Perhaps a fresh re-installation of Legacy will resolve the error 381. Please see the article Uninstall - how to do a complete and totally clean removal of Legacy 8.0 at http://support.legacyfamilytree.com/article/AA-00926. To do a fresh download of Legacy Family Tree 8.0 Deluxe, please visit http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/DownloadNewLegacy8Deluxe.asp and use your Legacy 8 customer number to unlock the deluxe features. This re-installation process will wipe out any customized setting you have made. If you want to keep them, please see http://support.legacyfamilytree.com/article/AA-00983 for the steps to back them up. Richard, I have tested this problem, but I cannot duplicate it. My Internet Website links attached to Event sources are merging correctly from the right person into the left person and the links in the event Source Media Galleries work after merging. I have a couple of suggestions: 1. Make sure that you are double-clicking on the Internet Website icon in the Source Media Gallery for it to open. 2. Make sure that you have a good link. 3. If the link icons still do not work try a clean re-installation of Legacy. I use SugarSync to sync Legacy files with a 64bit Windows 7.0 Home Premium laptop. Evidently something I've done just recently has caused a problem in the sync-ing process because the SugarSync program never gets totally sync'd because on the desktop side SugarSync is attempting to download a .LDB file that NEVER downloads! From what I've been able to gather .LDB files have something to do with ACCESS and are supposed to be deleted automatically not needing sync'd. I've found 10 of these .LDB files, two of which are the current date, and one of which is the culprit noted in the SugarSync message. I'm not sure if this is a Legacy issue or SugarSync issue. Can I *safely* delete these 2 files with the current date (and the other 8 for that matter) and, hopefully, get SugarSync working properly? I don't know what I did to create this situation. re: [LegacyUG] Family Search Sync
Ila, There is no one cause of the Access Violation error in Legacy FamilySearch. I have noted that I can reproduce the error when exiting Legacy under certain conditions. For example if Legacy FamilySearch is busy collecting possible duplicates and I decide to quit the program in the middle of the search, the Access Violation error will happen. Also when starting Legacy, if you suddenly decide to quit while the program is still initializing, the Access Violation error will appear. So I am guessing that your Legacy program might be busy doing something in the background when you decide to exit. Again, there is no one cause of this problem. I know that a user can decide that the word married in that checkbox can mean whatever they want it to mean, but I hallucinate that most users assume it means just what it says married - formal ceremony with binding contract assumption. But, with the checkbox being a combination of two attributes and no way to identify what means married, the use of the checkbox will be, in my opinion, inconsistent or ambiguous between various users. john. Re: [LegacyUG] Oh-oh!
Here are some things that may help stop data corruption and data loss: . Always do Check/Repair before and after updating/upgrading the Legacy program; before and after importing one file into another; before and after merging duplicate persons, etc. . Use an uninterruptable power supply or APC to protect your computer from sudden power loss and to filter out power surges/fluctuations. . Don't leave Legacy open and unattended for prolonged periods. Shut it down if you are going to bed or will be away for more than a few minutes. A family file can be corrupted if Legacy is open when an automatic Windows update with reboot happens. . Make sure that you always work in the same family file. Some users have more than one family file with the exact same name, but saved in different locations. For example, if they have been adding new people to their family file called MyGenealogy.fdb saved in Documents for several weeks, and then inadvertently open an old version MyGenealogy.fdb saved in the Legacy folder they conclude that Legacy has lost data. . Restoring a family file from an old backup can be a problem. If you do not backup frequently and need to restore your family file, you will get an older version of your file with fewer people. . Too many backups can be confusing. When you restore from a backup copy, select the one with the most recent date. . Run ScanDisk / Disk Defragmenter regularly on your computer's hard drive and replace bad drives. . Don't push the 2 GB size limitation for a family file. As a file approaches the 2 GB limit it becomes susceptible to errors that can't be fixed. . Back up your family file on a regular basis, especially before any major file operations like importing and merging records, or using any tools like Check/Repair, Advanced Deleting, Advanced Sourcing or Search and Replace which make global changes to your family file. Re: [LegacyUG] how to...
The source that transfers to Legacy automatically is very generic - just the name of the person, their FSID and the website address. re: [LegacyUG] how to...
Cheri, The correct way is to first enter the two children. Next, in Family View, right-click on one of the twins and select Children's Settings from the popup menu to open the Edit Children screen. Highlight the first twin and set his/her Child Status to Twin, then do the same for the second twin and close the screen. The Twin status can be included in reports. In the report screen, click the Report Options button (has a pencil, triangle and ruler) and on the Include tab check mark Child Status and close the screen. You are now ready to print. Jerry, There are several ancillary files that may show in the data folder where the family file (.FDB) is saved. They do not contain any family tree information. If you delete the ancillary files, Legacy will simply recreate them. These files include but are not resistricted to: .CB= Clipboard information settings file (older versions of Legacy) .CBH = Clipboard header file (older versions of Legacy) .FSD = Legacy FamilySearch Database .FG= Focus Group file .IGI = IGI Search results file .LDB = Record-Locking Info. (temp. file made when .FDB opens deleted when it closes properly) .NC = Source clipboard .PPL = Potential Problems List .Rc3 = Calculated Relationships .REL.CAL = Relationship Calculator file .RGD = Research Guidance file .TC = Clipboard files (To-do, source, etc.) .TC0-9 = Clipboard files (older versions) .TCH = Clipboard files (older versions) The ancillary files cannot be opened by the user. If you try, you will get a message that you need go to the Internet for a program to open it or look on your computer for a program to open it. re: [LegacyUG] Media File Names
William, My advice is do not use RINs in media file names. Over the course of time RINs numbers are likely to change for some individuals as you delete records and merge individuals, which leaves gaps in the RIN sequence (abandoned RINs). Legacy can use these abandoned RINs when you import GEDCOMs or add new people or renumber RINs to fill gaps. A photo name RIN135tombstone five years ago might not belong to the person with RIN 135 today. I like to name pictures of people by surname, given name(s) and a short description like Newborn or 45thBirthday etc. Original Message From: William Hoff bh...@mchsi.com Sent: Wednesday, October 08, 2014 6:59 PM To: legacyusergroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: [LegacyUG] Media File Names I've read here that media file names should have no caps and no spaces. Re: [LegacyUG] Can't believe I deleted whole family
Sheila, In Legacy 7.5 and earlier versions we frequently experienced users who accidentally deleted their entire family file. Thinking they were deleting just one father-mother family with kids, they would click on File Delete Family File and confirm the deletion. Their whole family file (.fdb) would then be sent into the Recycle Bin. Usually restoring from the Recycle Bin would get everything back or they could restore from their backup file and get everything back. The only permanent losses were a few people who emptied their Recycle Bins before contacting us and only backed up very infrequently, like once every month or two. I recently helped a user restore from a backup. The most recent one he had was six months old. Run-time error 5 can happen at different times and when totally different things in Legacy. In order for our programmers to be able to fix a problem they first must be able to reproduce it. If they can't reproduce it, they have no way of diagnosing the cause. If you can send us the steps that consistently reproduce the problem on their computers the programmers will work on it. Legacy is an excellent program and the best I've found for genealogy recording and this is the only major negative point that I have found so far with V8. No other program I have ever used, genealogy use or otherwise, has had this problem, but then I may just have been lucky! I appreciate how difficult this type of error can be to isolate but I sincerely hope that one of your programmers is looking for any possible causes as it's very annoying. On restarting, Legacy never resumes where it crashed but usually at an individual I had been working on quite some time before and to compound the error, there is no trail back to the individual being worked with when Legacy crashed- very frustrating! This one's pretty simple but I use it quite often when I don't have the married names included in Name List. Another that is more involved is a saved Focus Group of collaborators with 12 generations of ancending pedigree for each. I use SearchMiscellaneousFocus GroupCreate List and set Tag1 for those ascending lines. Then I set Tag2 for descendants of an ancestor common to the collaborators (within 12 generations). Finally those with Tag1 and Tag2 are exported to a new database and then a nice descendant chart of related collaborators is easy to produce. Re: [LegacyUG] Sourcing a blank first name in SourceWriter?
And try searching the Internet using terms like Unknown, Unk, ??? and --- entered into a Surname or other field. I guarantee Ancestry, FamilySearch and other genealogy websites will be confused by them and won't return any useful information. However, the drawback to entering something in a field where you don't have information (question marks, dashes, unknown, etc) are: 1. If you use the Missing Information search tab in the Search window, you won't find the missing information - it's looking for blank fields. 2. If you use the not equal to or equal to in a Detailed Search and leave the field blank, (find everyone who doesn't have this field blank or find everyone who has this field blank - good search for missing data) the search won't give you what you're looking for 3. If you want to use Insert underlines for missing in the book reports, those fields will not be included since again it's looking for empty fields. 4. Blank fields draw attention to the reader in the chart reports. So entering anything in the fields that you don't have information for can impeded your research. I know a lot of people insert a lot of different things but I really don't recommend it. In my early days I did and now I'm sorry (easy to remove for everything but Surname) Mr and Mrs should only be used as a surname prefix Legacy will complain if you put that in a given name field Sincerely, Sherry Technical Support Legacy Family Tree On Tue, Jul 1, 2014 at 8:54 AM, singhals singh...@erols.com wrote: Or for absolute certainty while scanning a list of name : Mr Ms as appropriate to the known gender. Click on File File Maintenance Check/Repair and follow the prompts. If any error messages occur during the Check/Repair process, click No to continue with the repair. Do step 1 twice if errors are found. 4. Click the Reset button in the lower right of the Descendant Book screen. Confirm the reset with Yes. 5. You will have to reset your options. In the Descendant Book screen set: (1) 7 Generations on the main screen. (2) On the Page Layout tab check mark 'Start new page after each generation (mandatory if including source footnotes). re: [LegacyUG] Splitting File
Diane, Here are two critical things to keep in mind if your entire family file is getting copied in the Split Screen View: 1. When in an Ancestor Options screen, select only 'Direct Line Ancestors' and optionally you can check mark the three boxes under Direct Line Ancestors. Do not select 'Entire Ancestor Line'. This option is exactly like adding an entire family line and will take everybody connected in any way to the individual -- up or down or sideways in his or her family tree. 2. When in a Descendant Options screen, select only 'Descendants (includes all descendants)'. Do not select 'Entire Descendant Line'. This option is exactly like adding an entire family line and will take everybody connected in any way to the individual -- up or down or sideways in his or her family tree. RE: [LegacyUG] Same gender marriage???
Legacy won't let you do a same sex marriage or partnership. This may change in a future version of Legacy, but version 8.0. There is a work-around. Before you start, backup the family file. The first steps are exactly what you do when entering a straight couple. The change in sex is made in Microsoft Access. After adding the couple in Legacy (one will be male the other female), make note of their RIN numbers and close the program. Next open the file in Microsoft Access. Here are the steps: 1. Start MS Access. 2. Click on File and select Open. 3. Type *.fdb in the File name field at the bottom of the window and press Enter on the keyboard. Access will now see all files with a .fdb extension. 4. Browse to the directory where the family file is saved and open it. Change the gender of one of the partners: 5. Open the table named tblIR. 6. The IDIR field holds the RIN numbers. Use these to find an individual. 7. The Surname and GivenName fields are self-explanatory. 8. The Gender field holds the sex of the individual: Male = 0 and Female = 1. 9. Change the gender to be the same as his or her partner. 10. re: [LegacyUG] Migration of Data/photos.
Les, Making a multimedia backup (a zipped file) and restoring it (extracting or unzipping it) is the best way of moving multimedia files (pictures, sound and video files) attached to a family file from one computer to a new computer, or to send them to another person along with a GEDCOM file. Just backup your multimedia files on the first computer and unzip them on the new computer. The big problem is when pictures are saved to a folder under the user's Documents folder. If the user account on the two computers don't have the same user account name, Windows 7 and Windows 8 the result is that Legacy won't find the pictures. When this happens the pictures will have to be located and reattached in Legacy. The multimedia backup contains not just your pictures, but also includes the directories and subdirectories that your pictures are in. So when you restore, please restore only to C:\ because that is the starting point from where the directory structure will be recreated. This is really important. Please see the article Moving Legacy Pictures from One Computer to Another at http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/tipsPicturesMoving.asp for details. re: [LegacyUG] Exporting/Importing Files
When you want to transfer information from the Family Tree Maker program, you have to first export a GEDCOM file from it and then as the second step import the file into Legacy. The steps for creating a GEDCOM file from the various versions of Family Tree Maker are listed at http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/tipsGEDCOMfiles.asp. Once a GEDCOM file has been exported from Family Tree Maker, you can easily import it into Legacy by clicking on File and selecting Import From Use Import Wizard to help with any import and follow the prompts. To view the Legacy for Beginners training video showing how to import a GEDCOM file, please visit http://www.legacyfamilytree.net/videos/beg7/LegacyForBeginners.html and select Getting Started. The import will be very faithful, but please be aware of the following Family Tree Maker quirks: 1. Facts are exported from Family Tree Maker with a PLAC tag, which in all other genealogy programs is reserved for Locations. Any program would import that as a Location and not an event. In Legacy, we have accommodated this by giving the user the option to determine at the time of import if the data is actually a location or an event and where to direct it. 2. Pictures inserted in Family Tree Maker scrapbooks do not move to Legacy, or other genealogy programs for that matter. The article Import GEDCOM at http://wiki.phpgedview.net/en/index.php?title=Import_GEDCOM states, Family Tree Maker is one of several off-line editing programs that does not properly handle media object pointers within the GEDCOM. Legacy, among many others, does handle these properly. (Media object pointers is another way of saying multimedia links, or in other words pictures, sound and video.) re: [LegacyUG] Size of data base
George, Here are some things that can change your family file size (some are obvious, some are not): 1. Check and Repair and File Compacting will reduce a file size by deleting unused/unreferenced data without affecting the number of individuals in it. 2. Merging duplicate records and deleting records. 3. Inadvertently opening or restoring an older version of a family file or backup with fewer people in it (this is quite common). 4. File damage from various causes can cause record loss (this is very rare). 5. Exporting to a GEDCOM file and then importing it back into Legacy. It's good to check the statistics for your family file now and then to see how many people, marriages and sources it has. Click on the Legacy Home tab and see the Statistics box in the upper right. Dennis, Open the Web Page Creation tool and click the Reset button in the lower right. Next, reselect your webpage options and then recreate your Individual web. Re: [LegacyUG] Building Web Site
Dennis, Try these steps: 1. With Legacy closed, please browse into the Legacy folder on your hard drive and delete the WebPage.USR file and also the Legacy.exe program file. 2. Next, go to http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/DownloadUpdate.asp and run the update. This will replace the deleted Legacy.exe file. 3. Open Legacy and start the Web Page Creation tool. 4. Reselect your opens for the Individual style web and create your wepages. 5. Check the source citations. They should be on their own page.
