[LegacyUG] Windows 11

2021-11-08 Thread Rita Lynn McKale
Hi,

I am thinking about getting a new computer. Does Legacy run on Windows 11?

Thank you,

[LegacyUG] Hashtags and Bookmarks

2019-09-26 Thread Rita Lynn McKale
I have noticed that my Hashtags and Bookmarks don't stay.

I have just started using Hashtags and have created two. I don't know how
long after I noticed that the couple that I assigned one of the hashtag too,
their hashtag was greyed out, not blue, and when I clicked on the hashtag
icon in the family view there were no available hashtags to use. So I
created another one and after I did the two that I created prior then showed
up. This has happened now several times..every time I go to look for
the families that share those two hashtags their hashtags are greyed out.
Is there an option somewhere I need to turn on somewhere?

And for the last few months my bookmarks don't stay.

I am using the lastest version of Legacy 9 and windows 7.

Thank you for your help

Rita

Re: [LegacyUG] Big Problem

2019-05-23 Thread Rita Lynn McKale
Brian,
My problem(s) seem to be fixed but I want to make sure.

When the hints window started popping up all the time I went to the
troubleshooting help and did what was in helpdeleting and
reinstallingand then I had TWO windows that popped up every time I
clicked on something (the hints window and do I want to allow Mellennia to make
changes on my computer). After unchecking Hints like you suggested, both of
those windows do not come up. Are both windows tied to Hints or do I have
another issue lurking in the background waiting to pop out?

Thank you all for your help
Rita

Instead of removing the check box from the options screen in Options >
Customize > View (not General as you said in your message) > Section 8.13,
click on the Select Background Hints button and remove the check marks from all
the hint sources (MyHeritage.com, FamilySearch, FindMyPast.com and
GenealogyBank).
Save that screen and you should see that the check box on Setting 8.13 is also
off.
Save your options and you should not get the hints and they should stay off
when you reopen Legacy.

PS the hints not working message problem has be tracked down to MyHeritage.com
hints. If you just turn off that hint source you should not get the problem
with Hints has stopped working but hints from the other sources will still
appear.

You are awesome Thank you so much. That even stopped the second box (Do I

I was so afraid that my file had become corrupt. I am still concerned that

Hi Rita,

Open Legacy & get the error message box, I clicked the X in upper right corner
of message box, then immediately went to customize options, and general, and
removed the check mark from "show hints" and then click 'save' at the bottom of
the screen.

Some of my selections on customize options do not save, and the hints is one of
them, so I have to do this each time I open Legacy. I'm hoping that this
problem is fixed on the next update.

[LegacyUG] Legacy and FindAGrave

2019-01-03 Thread Rita Lynn McKale
I have created hundreds of memorials on FindAGrave for family members in my
Legacy Database.

Before the creation of the Find a Grave ID field I used the User ID field to
record the memorial numbers. In the User ID field I would place an asterisk
at the end of the memorial number to indicate a memorial that I
created/maintain (number with no asterisk, someone else maintains that
memorial) I have tried placing an asterisk in the new Find a Grave ID field
but then Legacy doesn't find the memorial when you click on the Find A Grave
field.

Does anyone have any thoughts on how to indicate that I maintain a memorial
on the individuals information screen and still be able to click on the Find
A Grave ID?

Thanks,

Rita

In the family view, above my name is the word "Self" and above my husband's

When all else fails I suggest trying File > File Maintenance, that will
sometimes correct weird behaviour.

Deleting and recreating the event might also work but that will remove it
from everyone and you will have to link the recreated event to all those
currently using the problem event. If it is only used by one or two that
might be worth the effort.

Hi Brian,

The "List Style" formatting is not checked.

The problem seems to only be with this one "created Event". I check a
different Event that I recreated and it reads fine on reports.

The Event reads fine in the Edit Event screen but not in the reports or when it

The problem is with your choices for event format in the Report Options.

Start the Report
Click the Report Options Button
Select the Format Tab
Click the Event Narrative Format

Make sure that this does not have "Use List Style formatting" selected.

I tested both reports for a custom event I created for my file and the created
event correctly used the sentence style in both the FGR and Individual report.

If just changing the option does not correct the problem then use the reset
button in the lower right of the report window to reset each report to their
default options. Now change the Event Narrative Format to Sentence style if it
is not already set.

Rita

Check this setting in each Report you use.
Open the Report options and then click the Report Options button
Go to the Format tab and click the Event Narrative Format. It sounds as
if it is set on List.

If not, you actually have more than one Event and they have differnet Event
Definitions.
Check at View - Master Lists - Event Definition.

[LegacyUG] Looking in Temporary Interfiles

Hi

I can't figure this out. After reformatting my computer I installed Legacy
7.5 from the website. I have several family files that I had backed up and
saved to an external hard drive. I restored those files and then backed
them up. Now when I go to File, Open Family File, Legacy is looking in
"Temporary Internet Files. I can direct it to my C, Legacy, Data file but
the next time I want to open a family file it is looking in the Temporary
Internet File again. What did I do wrong? How can I fix, or do I need to
delete everything and start over again?

Thank you,

RE: [LegacyUG] Using Legacy 8 with Crossover on Mac

2014-03-12 Thread Rita Lynn McKale
Hi Earlene,

Here is part of an email I saved from Sherry in Technical Support stating that
Legacy 8 does not work with Crossover.

Crossover isn't free. It's the supported version of WINE and there's a charge
for it, although Legacy users get a discount.

WINE is free but unsupported.
http://www.winehq.org/

I don't know if it works with v8 - since Crossover doesn't at this time, I
don't think WINE will work with Legacy.

Earlene:

You might try these 2 things:

1. In my use of VMWare and Parallels, It works the best if you set the virtual
machine up to NOT share files with the Mac. The VMs use basically network
drive locations for the VM (e.g., //psf/user/Documents/...). Network drives
that have a "//" as the beginning of the drive location is just not in the L8
vocabulary.

2. Open up L8 with no file and go to Options >Customize >6. Locations.

Change the Default location for 6.1, 6.2 & 6.3 to the normal location in the
Windows environment
6.1 would be: C:\Users\Earlene\Documents\Legacy Family Tree Beta 8\Data\

6.2 would be: C:\Users\Earlene\Documents\Legacy Family Tree Beta 8\Media\

6.3 would be: C:\Users\Earlene\Documents\Legacy Family Tree Beta
8\_AppData\Temp\

After doing steps 1 & 2, then try to open your L8 database (assuming you have
copied it to the location in 6.1 above).

When you run the Tools >Media Relinker to get all of your pictures located,
make sure you just have drive C: selected to search. The VMs may have several
other network drives that L8 doesn't recognize.

Good luck.

[LegacyUG] arrow key

2014-02-24 Thread Rita Lynn McKale
I am using the latest build with Window 7 64 bit.

When I click on the "Index" tab the curser is in the Surname box. I start
typing a last name and then use the down arrow to start to scroll and the
curser jumps to the Given name box. Once this has happened one time, I can
then put the curser back in the Surname box and type any number of letters
and use the down arrow to scroll. When I get out of the "Index" tap and
come back the same thing happens.

Is this the way it is supposed to be?

Can anyone else verify this problem? I had one other person verify it prior to
my reporting it, however, Support cannot duplicate this.

In Family View if I right click on a tag in a person's name the Advanced
Tagging screen opens and that tag that I right clicked on will show in 'Make
changes on #'. A great feature, which I use all the time. Except it now
only reliably works if I chose the husband. If I do the same for the wife I
will get a different selection, as follows…

Right clicking on Tags 1 through 4 will result in Tag #1 in 'Make changes on #'

Right clicking on Tag 5 = Tag #2

Right clicking on Tag 6 = Tag #3

Right clicking on Tag 7 = Tag #4

Right clicking on Tag 8 = Tag #5

Right clicking on Tag 9 = Tag #6

Well I feel quite deprived :-) I rarely change settings for Individual Report

Pretty sure they've been in Legacy since v.5 if not earlier.
It would be nice to have the choice to use the old behaviour.

When I was looking at this the screens moved too quickly for me to
notice that the Preview Button was greyed out. That does, then, sound
as though the behaviour was intentional.

Personally, I would rather have the option of making some Option
selections or making one mouse click to open the Preview rather than
have the Preview open immediately and perhaps have to close it, make my
Option selections and open it again. I've never found myself thinking
"oh I wish this Report opened straight away without me having to make
yet another mouse click"! But I can see you might miss it if that's
what you're used to.

RE: [LegacyUG] no pop up information when mousing over children in upgrade to version 8

2013-12-11 Thread Rita Lynn McKale

Jenny,
Thanks for suggesting this. I tried and sure enough, if I click on the mother
I can then scroll in the children's grid. I cannot scroll if I click first on
the father. I'm pretty sure Sherry said you need to click first in the
children's grid, but I could not find a place to click that did not bring up a
menu or take you to that child's page.

Mentioned recently that SOMETIMES I cannot scroll the Children grid with the
mouse wheel, but I can if I click first on the Mother of the children.
(Sometimes it is necessary to select the Father first, then the Mother and then
I can scroll with the mouse.)

Has anyone else you says they cannot scroll the grid at all with the mouse
wheel tried to duplicate this? If you can confirm it, it is something which
can be reported to the programmers for investigation.

Yes - did you click on the list? Legacy doesn't start scrolling just by
hovering over a list - you need to click on it.

You can also scroll with the scroll bars on the right and bottom.

The pop-up info on Family View was removed because you now have the Scrolling
List (grid) view for children, which can provide a *lot* more information than
the pop-up did.

Right click on the children and select View . Scrolling List (grid).
To customize fields, right click on an existing header.

The ability to show more fields of information for the children was something
that a lot of users requested.

automatically but didn't! Evidently you have to 'adjust settings'. 'Did manage

RE: [LegacyUG] Split View

Hi Sherry,

Hope you had a wonderful Christmas….

I have done a reinstall of Legacy from the website. My problem remains however
it is not how I first thought. It is not the split view that causes Legacy to
freeze. It is the particular family file that I was trying to open that causes
the freeze. My main file works fine and I can open it again in split view but
if I try to open this one particular family file, by itself or in split view,
that seems to cause the freeze.

What do I need to do? I’m running Windows Vista.

Today I learnt of a distant relative who was in a legal registered civil
relationship with a person of the same sex. I then started to look how
this could be entered into Legacy. What I've read, and I would like
members to confirm this, is that Legacy 7.5 is not capable of handling
this sort of relationship. Further, if I am to understand correctly, it
is against the policy of the software publishers to allow Legacy to be
record for such relationships or gender changes.

I would be most concerned if this is a policy decision and not just a
technical problem. As in genealogy we record the records as they are and
our own personal views and prejudices must override this.

Some time ago, I found in the parish register, my great aunt who
baptised her two illegitimate children who were born 12 years apart. I
was horrified to see that the vicar had recorded occupation as, "A
harlot", because this was official records I still recorded it as an
occupation and put some notes alongside.

I am hoping that some members can give me some reassurance and also how
I can work around entering this relationship into legacy.

Robert…

Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] new biological father

You can link the children to both families. Just add a child to your uncle’s
marriage to this woman. Right click in the list of children area. Use the
option “link to an existing son (or daughter).” After you have linked the two
children, right click on one of their names (while still in the family view
with your uncle and his wife as the family view couple). Click on “children’s
settings” On this page you can change their relationship to their father and
mother. You can now put them as the adopted children of the uncle and
biological to the mother.

On the family view for the woman that your uncle married and her first husband,
do the same thing. Now you can mark their biological father as their
biological father.

In summary, the two children will show up as children in two different
families. In the first marriage of the woman they will show up as the
biological child of the husband and wife. In the family group of the woman’s
2nd marriage, they will show up as the wife’s biological children but as the
adoptive children of her 2nd husband.

I hope that all made sense.

I wouldn't want to see Legacy changed in such a way that same sex
relationships were regarded at the norm. Perhaps "Partner 1" and
"Partner 2" could be the normal with options to customise with
Male/Female, Husband/Wife, etc. This could also cover relationships
where a male/female couple aren't/don't marry but the date on which
they got together to form a family unit is wanted. I know there is a
box that can be checked to indicate a couple didn't marry but it isn't
immediately obvious they didn't, esp if a date is also included.
There's also the instances where there's an illegitimate child and an
alleged father.

Something else I would like to see is the dropping of "Unknown" for
the father where a child is illegitimate together with the indication
the mother had had a relationship with the child's father.

Rather than include all the various options as standard and thus
making Legacy ungainly and bloated, it might be better (from my point
of view) to simplify it but allow customisation.

I do not know if you are trying to update using the update from the Web
or the full version.

I recommend you use the full update version and tell IE to save the
installer file in a folder on your hard drive. I recommend using My
Documents not the desktop since the icon for the installer and Legacy
are the same, if both are on the desktop you can be confused over which
one is the installation and which is the working program.

I saw your note, but have no good answer. It is currently 430AM in California.
I believe Millenia opens the phone lines around 9AM PST, which is about 4 1/2
hours from now. When they get in the e-mail is checked first thing. Weather is
rainy, but should not cause problems. No major snowstorms on the west coast
now. Do you have any disks for the program. The not valid Win32 concerns me,
but I would reccommend calling the phone number when they get there, or they
usually help any strays lurking, so they might send to you once opened? My only
help is to turn of computer count to 20 slowly, turn back on. Does windows open
up normally? THEN open up Legacy if an old version is loaded and working. I
would think it best to call Jim or whoever is opening this morning. Good

The only way I can think of doing this is:

1) Create a new empty database.
2) Open in "Split Screen View" your original database. Now you have the
empty database in one MDI window and the original database in the
   other.
3) Drag-n-drop the person you want to copy from the original database to
   the new empty database.
4) Now drag-n-drop the person in the new database back to the old.

I haven't tried this, so let us know if it works.

Your problem is more general than that. Other Hotmail, Gmail Yahoo! accounts
have been used to spam normal users. Some mail relay servers recognise this and
lump all users of these webmail services in the same bucket and do not pass on
messages from these services. Hence your 'hole' in the messages.

Real solution: get a real email address registered with a proper ISP. Then, you
have some sort of comeback if you notice missing messages. Otherwise, you just
have to put up with it.

RE: [LegacyUG] Individual Report problem

2011-08-10 Thread Rita Lynn McKale
Hi Sherry,

1. I do have the latest build

2. I reset the report as instructed and that creates a one page report with no
issues.

I went to report options, in the Pictures tab, I checked "Picture of Main
Person". No problem with that report, even though it was still a one page
report. Next I unchecked "Picture of Main Person" and checked "Event
Pictures". That report was 2 pages with no problems. Then I went back and
checked "Picture of Main Person" and left "Event Pictures" checked. Here
starts the problems. Page one is OK, page two has the vertical line all the
way done the page (this is the line that separates the Labels Father: (or
Mother etc.) from the actual name. This page only has three lines of
information. Page 3 is fine.

This still only seems to be happening on my father's page and I have tried
several others.

What do you think is causing this?

Thanks,
Rita in South Carolina

I'm not able to duplicate this.

The first things to do when a report isn't formatting correctly even
when it's just for one individual:

1. Make sure you have the current build (7.5.0.112)

2. Reset the report options by clicking the Reset button in the lower
right corner of the main report option window.

You'll have to reselect your choices.

Under options> select customize> select data format, >then under category, Term

[LegacyUG] Index Tab

2011-06-27 Thread Rita Lynn McKale
There are two things I have noticed when working in the Index Tab that I
think have changed with the latest update.

1) If my curser is in the RIN field I cannot tab over to the Given field. I
can tab from Given to Surname and from Surname to RIN but that's it.

2) After creating a new individual, they do not appear in the Index list
until I have closed and reopened Legacy. I am reasonably certain in the
past they appeared in the Index as soon as they were created.

Would someone let know if these things used to work that way.

Thanks,
Rita in South Carolina

Yes, when left in the “My Documents” you do not know which are linked to your
Legacy files. It is so much easier that have your Legacy data and linked files
in a folder by themselves, so you can copy ALL that is in that folder. You will
have everything when moving or copying to take with you to another machine.

A bit of File management upfront will save you many headaches later.

I still do NOT like the fact that the default locations for the files is within
the Legacy Program folder.

Scott - I've talked to support and they tell me it is a printer problem and not
a MAC issue - I've learned to 'work around' it though so it isn't as bad a
problem as I may have indicated. As you indicate - I love my MAC - there is so
much more stability and I'm not always 'tweaking' some issue as I do on my PC.
Just wish Legacy had a MAC program, but I understand that Legacy is a Windows
platform. I've used a couple of the MAC genealogy programs, but none of them
approach the Legacy for usability.

I used Parallels, Fusion and Bootcamp - finally settled on the Bootcamp package
and it works just like any PC when in its configuration. Installing the
program isn't difficult - I'm no techie, but following the instructions was
pretty easy. Then Windows 7 install was just as though it was on a regular PC.
As Scott said though, if you are reticent about doing it yourself, the tech
folks are great in helping to get you going.

On May 17, 2011, at 8:17 AM, Scott Hall wrote:

Mac OS sides easily. Also, as stated, though, you don't need to buy a
virtualization application, as Mac OS comes with Boot Camp, which will allow
you to run boot your Mac with Windows, acting as a PC.

If you are not confident about your ability to install this software, you can
take it to an Apple store.

As a reformed PC user, I think you'll enjoy the Mac generally, as it suffers
from few of the challenges Windows does.

Keep in mind, though, that if you install Windows on the Mac while you are
running that operating system, you are suspectible to any Windows
issue--including viruses and the like--and thus should have adequate protection
installed. Know, however, that any virus, trojan, etc. you might contract on
the Windows side will not effect the Mac OS side.

As for Bob's print issue below, I'd say that is either local to his computer,
as my iMac is about the same age and I have no issues printing from either side
and have not needed to "intervene". Bob--have you tried calling Apple support
to help with this issue? I'm confident it shouldn't exist.

Bootcamp is that you have to restart in either the MAC side or the Windows

with both these is that the MAC needs you to intervene with the Printing

not to work at times. All the gurus in India were unable to resolve this issue

Do as Ron said, but, at the same time, click on the button labelled 'View
Current List of Multimedia Locations' and then clear out anything in the
resulting list you don't want. I'd clear them all and start afresh.

Rita,

It is usually far easier to opt to find the file yourself using Windows
Explorer. If you do not know the file name you will find it at the bottom
right of the Picture Gallery.

However, if you really want to wait for Legacy to find it, first go to
Options>Customise>Locations and change your picture location to "C:\"

I set up a test file with the following:
- Mary Morgan married John Smith
- I added a daughter Anne Smith
- I set the daughter Anne as adopted by both John & Mary
- I set John & Mary to divorced
- I added a new husband temporarily for Mary (named Harry, with no last name)

- I set the daughter Betty as adopted by Mary, and left the field blank for
Harry's relationship
- I then deleted (not unlinked) Harry
- Lastly, just to be sure, I ran all three file maintence actions

The database looks consistent with the situation Rita describes, I think.

Then I ran a Descendant Narrative report on Mary Morgan with the following
results:

If you look closely, there should be an extra 'carriage return' line between
the two children. That is the 'space' for the missing(?) father. With data
missing in fields (though accurate), the spacing can be unobvious, or actually
wrong. You might want to create an actual 'unknown' for this report to get the
spacing visually clearer.
Or, instead of unknown, you could call him Mr. Unneeded or similar.

RE: [LegacyUG] Medical History

2010-09-03 Thread Rita Lynn McKale
I think we're looking for diseases etc. that are inherited (or have a tendency
to be inherited). Thank you for giving this some thought...as always
there is more than one way to approach this and I had not thought much about it
until now.

Is there a way to print a pedigree that includes the 5th BMD field? Since we
already have a place to record cause of death and medical notes, I was hoping
for a way to print a pedigree chart with just that information.

Thanks,
Rita in South Carolina

The important question is, what are you planning to use this for. If you are
tracking different cancers or birth defects for the greater family; or just one
type, then you could use events. If tracking exactly one symptom, you can put
that in the '5th' BMD field.
Deaf or blind are examples of 'one symptom'.
These are suggestions only, but may help you decide how and why you want to
track death types.

Thankyou for your reply Ron

I have always saved my work, but it happens each time. I was curious
to see if anyone else had the same
problem. I have my colors saved in the color folder. I also note
that the Labels on the Family page
File | Edit |etc
all have a white background to them now, in the form of a rectangle,
is there anyway
I can turn that off, it is quite distracting. Thanks for your help.

Are you sure ou haven't accidentally left a space on the Override tab, so
that as far as Legacy is concerned it is still active.

I have often removed text from the Override tab and never had the problem
you have, so the above seems the most likely thing.

[LegacyUG] Sentence Override

2010-06-15 Thread Rita Lynn McKale
Hi
I created an Event/Fact and in my haste I used the Sentence Override
feature. Later, having some time, I filled in my wording options so my
Event/Fact would read the way I would like. Now, I have removed the
sentence (in the Sentence Override Tab)but that tab still says 'active' even
though there is nothing there. And the Event/Fact does not pick up any of
the information in the Description, Date or Place fields.

I know I can delete this Event and just create a new one but I'm wondering
if this is how it is supposed to work. Am I just missing how to completely
remove the sentence in the Override tab?

Thanks,

RE: [LegacyUG] Media Backup

Sometimes I just don't understandplease forgive me if this seems
elementary to most of you.
I am working with Windows Vista on my desktop (main computer). All of my
pictures, documents etc. are organized in folders in the picture folder already
set up in Vista. I have pointed Legacy to the items I want linked to my family
members and events. I want to put Legacy on my new netbook. If I backup my
multimedia files and then follow the instructions Sherry referenced below, will
my pictures (the ones linked to Legacy) then show up on my new netbook? Or
will I need to also copy my picture folder from my main pc onto my netbook?

Thanks for helping me understand.

The Help file and article on the Tips section of the website explains the

I think the problem is that legacy does back up the multimedia files
but restoring a backup only restores the family file but doesn't unzip
the multimedia backup, you have to do that yourselve. So it might look
like legacy only did a back up of the multimedia links when you
restore a backup of a family file.

Come on people lighten up. Although, I agree with many of your comments, as a
former teacher I can certainly empathize with the writer. The only dumb
question is the one that “someone does not ask.” Occasionally, us new comers to
Legacy appreciate the expert guidance and opinions of those that are more
experienced than ourselves. You actually do yourselves, and Legacy, a
disservice when we encounter your wrath.

In our haste and frustration sometimes we overlook the archives and correct
netiquette in favor of going to those that are far more experienced than
ourselves for a resolution to our problem, oversight, etc.

Excuse us for being newbie’s. Just remember that you were a newbie also at some
point in time. All we are asking is a little guidance. If that offends anyone,
so be it!!!

As for nitpicking his or her failure to give their name or return email

speculation. However, I do take responsibility for what I say, and I am not

have not been able to locate the Iphotos directory so that I can put a photo in
Legacy. What are the steps to do this? Or do you have to install photos
in vmware first? This would mean they would be installed twice: once in
Iphoto and once in Vmware.

Sherry,

I had also added some columns in the 7.4.0.9 configuration which I believe
were deleted when I installed the update. I added one back in and tried
clicking the Default button. Everything changed back to the "squished"
format and the "Age" column disappeared again. It may have had something to
do with when and how I saved the configuration. It's Ok now and comes up
correctly at start-up.

I hope this helps your analysis. Thanks,

RE: [LegacyUG] Where to put life stories?

2010-03-10 Thread Rita Lynn McKale
Hi James,
I use notes for that type of thing. I use the Research notes to collect all
the tidbits, emails, and things like "I searched the entire census for St.
Joseph Co. and could not find any Quinn's". And then I use General Notes to
tell "the story" where you can incorporate any/all of the items you've
collected in your research notes. Hope this gives you some ideas.
Rita in South Carolina

PS: What I would like are some ideas on is where to record church/cemetery
information. I have several families where the church was very important and
several generations attended the same church, donated land, founded the church,
and lots of other things. I would love not to have to repeat this information
in everyone's notes. Anyone have any thoughts?

I'm talking about the tidbits of information handed down in legends,
sent in emails, or flow out of interviews? Things like Grandpa Moses
lived in a river boat on the river, or Great Aunt Sally dated Jesse
James, or whatever. The stuff that puts some life into all the facts
we collect. I've been toying with the idea of a custom event for
this, and I was going with one I wanted to call "Fun Facts", but I've
decided everything is not fun - like a triple killing in my tree.
And, of course, the 'fact' part is questionable. It may be a fact
that this story was often told, but the story itself may not be a
fact. Anyway, I'm looking for some ideas for how to do this.

In the case of an event, I was thinking I could use an entry format in
the notes section like so

"When I was a boy, we had rocks to play with, and we liked it!" -

After thinking some more, I looked and found in 'Search and replace' a category
'List-Child status'. Switching from Natural to ' ' should work. If not, I have
found a way to confuse the computer. Use Natural to any other word. I use
dummy. When you are in the first move, it allows you to edit what you add, so
you can edit the dummy to ' '.

[LegacyUG] Cemeteries and Churches

Hi,
I would like to know how others deal with cemetery/church information. I'm
not talking about the debate about putting the cemetery/church name in the

information in the notes section it gets repeated many times. Maybe that is
what I will need to do, I just wanted to avoid the repetition.

Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Child Status

Did you convert from Family Tree Maker to Legacy Family Tree. The
Natural for child relationships was and maybe still is, used by Family
Tree Maker but not by Legacy.

I did a few years ago. And that would explain why so many are showing with
'Natural' child relationships. I did not notice this until recently when there
was a post about showing the child relationships in the Family View and I
changed my settings so I could see them.

Now, after reading Mike and Rich's response about the meaning of Natural, I'm
wondering if there is a way to remove all those at once or would I have to go
in one by one and change everyone.

something I will never be able to use?

Did the disappearing names on the index tab and notes come back for those
affected? And was that just for a couple people?

You're right I have not had much need for the source clipboard but I thought I
read right after the new release that something was not available regarding the
source clipboard that had been, and at least a couple people were very
disappointed. I try to learn more features of Legacy as I go along and this is
something I am interested in using.

Rita,

Mike was emphasising the point that one should always back up before
updating, especially, as in this case, where the format of the database will
be changed. To revert back, uninstall 7.4, and install v7.0, then restore
from the back-up.

You do not say if you are LDS, if not when the screen pops up sking if you
want the nFS, say "No", otherwise "Yes".

You are wrong to say that "removed like having more than one item on the
source clipboard to select from". This was a change made when V7.0 was
launched. If you have never noticed then clearly you are one of the majority
who never used that function, so you were unaffected.

Some bugs have been corrected in the new version, but other than those, if
you are non-LDS you should see no change.

separate unknown father so there are three marriages (two unknown)for my
aunt and when I click through the different marriages for her only one of
these two kids (unknown fathers) show at a time in the unknown marraiges
(all three of the kids born to my aunt and uncle show in all marriages) but
both show in the marriage to my uncle as half kids.

Rita,

I't a bit late here, and I've had a long day, so my apologies. I follow the
the part about what you did, but am unsure about the part about what kids
are showing up where and how!

So, this is what you should have. On the Spouse Screen (click the Spouse
Icon), your aunt should have the two marriages with the first marriage at
the top. The two children in question should be linked to this first
marriage.

The next bit depends on how you wish to show these two kids. You can leave
them just linked to the first marriage and they will show as half-kids on
the Family View screen for the second marriage. Or additionally you can link
them to the second marriage as either step, or adopted. In which case they
will show twice on Family View and also in Reports.

Hope that helps.

There is an existing problem that Show 1/2 kids does not show them all if
there is more than one unknown spouse - I actually do have an ancestor that
had kids from 2 different unknown men. (Well, I'm assuming they were
different - she had ill. kids before she married, and ill. kids after her
husband died.)

However, if you are pretty certain that the kids were likely from the same
unknown person, you want to change it to only one "marriage" (or
relationship) with an unknown. So, unlike all but one of the kids from
the parents, go to the "marriage" of the person and the unknown, and add the
kids back in (add existing child). Then, look at the list of the person's
spouses, and get rid of the extra marriages that are not needed.

I unlinked the children and then, starting with the child I added just the

accomplished the same thing. But, now when I look at the three different
relationships, when looking at the two unknown spouces only one of these two
children show up with the other children. I have "show half brothers or
sisters" checked so as long as I have the mother on the family page all of
her children should show.right? By not creating the unknown spouces
first did I mess things up?

Jane,

I understand that you are uncertain whether "Nelson" is Susanna's maiden
name or whther she had a previous marriage to a "Nelson", in event Carrie's
surname is "Nelson" and her father is unknown. First unlink Carrie from her
current parents, then create another marriage for Susanna - click on the
spouse Icon for Susanna and add a new husband called "unknown". Then link
Carrie to this marriage.

Return to the Spouse screen and ensure that the marriage to "Unknown" is
first in the list.

My ancestor married, as his third wife, Susanna Nelson, who, when they were
married, had a daughter, Carrie. I do not know if she was illegitimate or
had a father named Nelson. Somehow I got my ancestor iinput as Carrie's
father, which is quite incorrect. When I try to unlink Carrie from my
ancestor, it only allows one to unlink from "parents". Of course, I only
wish to unlink from the father. I am not sure how to fix this. Nor can I
decide how to handle the correct father of Carrie. Help?

Jane S.
