Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 9 Family View Screen

2023-11-04 Thread Brian Kelly

Colin,

That was a typo on my part. As a beta tester I do have a testing version
9.0.0.444 but I did run my test in my copy of 9.0.0.443, the version
available to the public, and got the results I described.

Sorry about the confusion.

The Click to Add is working for me in Legacy 9.0.0.444, it opens a menu of
options to add new son's or daughters or link to existing people to add them.
It also has an option to change how children are viewed.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 9 Family View Screen

2023-11-01 Thread Gene Young

Linda,
Turning the computer of rather than re-start does nothing.  When you
turn it off it saves the current state of the computer, as is, including
any errors that exist in memory.  When you the start the computer again
it reloads everything, including errors.  When you do a restart it will
flush the memory and start fresh.  Remember, re-start clears and flushes
memory, turning off and on preserves the state of memory, saving and
re-loading all existing errors.

Unless you've done a clean uninstall your Legacy9.lic file will still be
in ...\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\_AppData\ folder
Download the free standard version of Legacy and install it. You may
need to disable your security software during the installation. Some
security software is more aggressive than others. Some will block until
they see that all is well after a number of other people have clicked
through their warnings and got them to do a proper check.

If you get a Windows screen saying Windows protected your PC click the
More Info link and then the Run Anyway button.

I see so many complaints about the new Legacy I just have to add my 2 cents
worth.
I am absolutely in love with the new program.  I've been able to find extensive
information thru the "Find A Grave" & the "Family Search" additions.  It has
re-inspired me in my genealogy searches and I couldn't be happier with the
"MyHeritage" access.
Because of the new info I've had to merge many locations in my files.  (Reason
for complaint?)  Nope, while I was adding United Kingdom locales I found and
added MANY "Battles of..." information to the individuals that died in the
battle, famous and not so well known.  What an addition the the history of our
families.
I have been unrelated families added to my database since a friend and I are
researching families with roots in our small county in West Virginia.  What a
joy to learn again what I didn't understand when I was in school learning that
dry information.
Thanks, Legacy/Ancestry, A whole new world has been opened for me.  I'm in my
late 70s and feel young again with so much to do.  "God put me on this earth to
accomplish a certain number of things; at this rate I have so much to do, I'm
never gonna die!"

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 9

2017-08-05 Thread Hogrooter .
I am a long time Legacy user. Recently, I also started using MyHeritage.
I had the same concerns about the quality of some of their information.
However, I have realized that I am the final judge about what gets added to
my tree. In spite of some questionable sources I have discovered some that
were both new and accurate. Without the new source suggestions I might
have missed them altogether. This is the same situation we have always
faced: Is the new information we find accurate?

[LegacyUG] Legacy 9

2017-08-05 Thread Carrie Pillow
Hi Shane

I am hesitant regarding My Heritage, I find the standard of their transcripts
poor, but I am in great hope that the acquisition of a quality product like
legacy and the Legacy customer support will make My Heritage sit up and think;
and up their game.

There are some wonderful features in 9, that as a Beta tester I have seen get
better and better, I also trust the Legacy team to be open an honest, so I have
no worries regarding using legacy 9.

There has never been a better time to try it, and I know it’s not possible to
go directly back to 8 from 9, but there is nothing stopping you exporting a
gedcom to any program you wish use in the future

of my ancestors and saw errors in just the little bit they let me see without
an account, just as when I search the Ancestry trees.

I have used Legacy just about from its beginning, through all the versions. I
do not used the search features; I just want good software that lets me
document names and personal data, events, and sources in an efficient manner,
and then lets me print useful and well-formatted reports. I also use it to
create webpages for my own family history website. I don’t upload family trees
to sites like Ancestry and MyHeritage or Genii. I want a website that shows
complete source documentation and event notes that are as long as I want. The
thing I would like Legacy is to allow drag and drop on the webpages instead of
just source code. I have tried TNG more than once, including having them set
it up, etc., and then paying someone to help a bit, but I just can’t master it.
Legacy webpages are easy for the reader to maneuver, and I like that
uncluttered aspect.

Through the years I have tried most of the other genealogy software, but Legacy
has fit my needs better than any. I do genealogy research on a client basis
also, and I use Legacy if the project is large enough to merit it. It creates
footnotes for me to paste into the narrative report I write for the client, as
well as printing reports when needed and creating a simple family tree for the
client, if the project is large enough. I create a family file and point them
to the Legacy free download so they can see literally all my research.

I am hoping for the best.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 9 - "hang time" when adding or editing individuals

2017-06-30 Thread Ian Thomas
Provided it doesn't cause the entire application to freeze, I put up with the
"hanging".

I have had longer waits than that; always put it down to 'Hints' or similar but
I have left that facility set on. Hints and the FamilySearch application (large
green window) are useful - though I would like the main Legacy program to close
the FS rather than requiring my intervention.

While not in every instance, there are enough times when this happens that I
get quite frustrated entering or editing individuals -

This happens when I click to ADD a new individual OR click to EDIT an existing
individual.

The individual "window" opens and I complete the individual information. I
click on "Save" and then, more often than not, I wait...

Clicking "Save" - "freezes" visible activity for anywhere from 2 seconds to, on
occasion, more than 10 seconds until finally, the window closes. I can't help
but wonder if this is related to the "research" of the individual I'm working
on (ie; LDS, MyHeritage, etc.) as I do have the hints enabled.

Anyone with suggestions, I'm happy to listen.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 9 - Search Find-a-grave

2017-06-24 Thread Philip Solida
When you search FAG from legacy, yes, your info right or wrong is used and
there is no fuzziness programed in, so memorials may exist under other
spellings or different infomation... so use the new search feature on find
a grave to search again... they do not use historical locations as the
program does, so if the historic and current locations do not match, again
it is not found... however, once you enter a FAG memorial number in the
box, it searches by that number rather than any info you have in the
program, so spellings or other info will not matter then.

I just entered a new person into Legacy and the search works just like it

Thanks Margaret

[LegacyUG] Legacy 9 - Search Find-a-grave

2017-06-24 Thread Margaret Gagliardi
Yesterday I upgraded to Legacy 9. When I try to search for a grave, every
time it says there is not one. However, when it tried to look for one I
knew I have a grave for, it still says there is none on F-A-G. When I copy
the memorial number into Legacy, it will allow me to search and find it,
using the new option.

What have I done wrong?
Thanks

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 9 - Source

2017-06-23 Thread Cathy Pinner

Dave,
There hasn't been a change with that template from Legacy 8 to Legacy 9
(I don't think any have changed but I'm not positive).

Do you see these at NARA or get sent photocopies to be using Basic
Format? I would have thought you'd be seeing them online.
I do note that the input and the output order are quite different
depending on whether you choose basic or microfilm or online images.

I've checked my copy of Evidence Explained and the template is
reflecting that.

Here's a quote:
11.40 Pension Files
The essential details for pension files are much the same as those for
bounty land records (11.28). When you cite a pension file’s number, you
should include the letters that preface the number (S.C., W.C.,
Inv., etc.). These designate the type of file—Soldiers’ Certificate,
Widows’ Certificate, Invalid (i.e., disabled), etc.
When citing a pension for a widow or the eligible children of a deceased
veteran, your citation to their file must also fully identify the
veteran by service name and unit. Even though the files carry separate
numbers and are bundled in separate envelopes, they share a common
jacket that carries the veteran’s identity. When the veteran or the
widow submit multiple applications—say, first under one act and then
under another—you will again have multiple, but still separate, files
and file numbers within a common jacket. The key exception to the rule
that all files are jacketed with the veteran is the case of eligible
children of veterans whose mothers have remarried a man who is also a
pensioner; in those cases, the children’s file may be jacketed with the
stepfather.

The following examples cover typical citations to
• Civil War veterans (Union Army);
• Indian Wars pensioners;
• widows and remarried widows;
• rejected applicants;
• microfilmed pension indexes; and
• online databases.

Are you entering a new Master Source for a different Legacy file?
If you really need a new family file but will be using sources

Some reports do support colour. If the report has that option you will
see a "colour text and boxes" button on the report screen. Look at the
pedigree chart report for an example. The Name List report does not
support colours however.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 9 right click delete wife's father or mother bug

2017-05-16 Thread Larry Lachance
Although I did not submit a “bug” report to anyone, this sounds very similar to
the “right-click” issue I previously inquired about on this forum. The
difference being, I wasn’t trying to delete the wife’s father, rather I was
trying to add a father or mother to the wife OR link to existing parents…

For example, using a wife for whom I never had parents before, when I right
click on the “add father” or “add mother” - the window that opens is the
individual view of the person (the wife in this case) I am trying to add the
parents to.

Same issue – if I have the parents’ names already in place and I right click on
the name of either one, a pop-up allows me to click “edit the father” or “edit
the mother”. When clicking on either choice, the individual view for the child
(again the wife but not either parent) opens for editing purposes.

Can’t help but wonder if this isn’t related somehow.

I'm using version 9.0.0.169 and tried to right click delete a wife's father.
Result was the husband was deleted instead. I've reproduced the problem with

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 9 - Hints - Query

2017-05-09 Thread Cathy Pinner

Marion,

The websites have to provide an API (Application Programming Interface)
in order for the Hints to be provided. These 4 are the only ones to have
done that.

Note that the Hints can be helpful by alerting you to the existence of a
source even if you don't have a subscription. MyHeritage Record Match
hints are often to the FamilySearch databases so you can go there and
search for it.

FamilySearch hints on the other hand are not coming from their databases
but from data they have hinted to their FamilySearch tree (and only then
if you have

entered the FamilySearch ID in Legacy).

Also there are free days on many subscription websites so you can take
note their are Hints you want to follow up and make the most of that
free time. At least I know FindMyPast and Ancestry have free days
regularly.

Note in Legacy 8 and 9 (and earlier versions) you can initiate a search
for the current person on any site you like. Some searches are provided
but you can add your own. Internet - Search Internet.

One of the things that I did first was to include a F-A-G Mem # Col on
the index. This works fine, and I can see at a glance who has been updated.

But, as mentioned above, I now want a list specific to three things:
Surname, Birth Location [State] and whether they have a F-A-G Memorial #.
The Search function has options such as: Equal, Contains, Not Equal,
etc. but the F-A-G Mem #s are huge and not consistent so using any of
the options does not work. For instance if the first three #s were 123,
a search might work, but they are not.

Searching for an "Individual" with "Find-a-Grave ID" Contains "*" will
give you a list of those who have an entry in the ID field. If you
choose Not Equal To instead of Contains, you will get a list of those

Disregard my post entirely Cathy, just call my original post a total
brain fade; I'd like to be more descriptive about my post, but the
Moderator would be a bit touchy I reckon. Dunno what came over me to
be thinking so outside the square, when I've been with Legacy for s
long, and I should've taken a break and made a cuppa. As it is, I'm red
faced enough, so I've gone off to serve some penance, and will print
out the new manual and sit down for a read.

Thank you though for one of your very familiar helpful posts Cathy.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 9 default install directory naming structure

2017-04-24 Thread Cathy Pinner

David,

Are you talking about your data or the installation of the Program and
the Settings file?

Legacy 8 installed by default to Program Files (x86)\Legacy8\
Legacy 9 installs by default to Program Files (x86)\Legacy9\ and removes
the Legacy8 program folder.

You may have chosen to install Legacy 8 somewhere else but wherever it
was installed, it used
...\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\_AppData\ folder for your settings and
Legacy 9 uses this same folder.
If you move or rename any part of \Legacy Family Tree\_AppData\ it is
simply recreated by Legacy using default settings the next time you open
Legacy.

...\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\ also has folders for your Data and
your Media but you don't have to use them.
When you use another folder instead - like your C:\Legacy8\ folder then
you should say that is where your data and/or your media is at Options -
Customise 6.1 and 6.2
That way, especially with Media, Legacy will help you keep your media
properly connected.

The good news is that if just your data and media are in your
C:\Legacy8\ folder, you can rename it to \Legacy\ or \Legacy9\ and
record that in 6.1 and 6.2. In addition, if that's where your data file
is, you'll need to use the File - Open in Legacy to open your file the
next time you open Legacy and Set Options - Customise 1.2 to open the
file you want in the right folder (don't just see the filename and
assume it's the one in the right folder).

Then you're set.

More information on finding Legacy files on your computer if you need it.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 9: Hints question

2017-04-22 Thread Brian Kelly
In order to provide hints from a site there must be something called an
Application Programming Interface (API). This is a set of rules and
programs provided by the site to allow other programs access. Even if a
site has an API they may not be willing to allow the Legacy program access.

There were some discussions among the Beta testers and programmers
during testing of Legacy 9 about adding other common sites but most
could not be added either because there is no API or the host would not
license Legacy to use their site's API.

The Legacy programmers were supportive of adding other hint sources but
cannot do so without permission. I cannot answer your question about the
specific sites you mention. Some of the sites you mention are included
in the list of places you can manually search using Internet > Search
Internet.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 9 questions

2017-04-20 Thread Brian Kelly
If your question on Hashtags has not been answered here is my take on
their usage.

A Hashtag is a label you can apply to one or many people in your file.
Once you have given them that label legacy has ways to create lists,
reports etc. on all the people so labelled.

Say you want to trace all the descendants of your ancestor(s) who came
over on the Mayflower. Now only one or very few people would have an
event for their arrival in North America on the Mayflower but by giving
all their descendants the Hashtag "Mayflower Descendant" you can take
advantage of the tools legacy provides for finding, listing and
reporting on people with that Hashtag. In a way it is an extension of
the current nine numeric tags but now you can have an infinite number of
hashtags.

So far as I know when Legacy programmers were looking for a name for
their new feature they borrowed the term from the social networking site
Twitter. Twitter uses a hashtag (named because they are preceded with
the hash mark #) as a way to group posts to that site by subject.

Brian Kelly

When/why would one use a "hashtag" instead of an "event/fact"? Or would

Why the name "hashtag"? Doesn't seem very descriptive to me . . . but I
can't think of a better name at the moment.

If I currently have something in an EVENT/FACT in version 8, but it
should really be a HASHTAG - how do I move it? (I've only downloaded
the free copy of version 9 so far and hashtags are only allowed in the
deluxe version - so I can't experiment/play with them. Answers to the
above questions may become "obvious" once I have the deluxe version??)

I thought one of the features that was being written into "the next
version" of Legacy (a.k.a. version 9) was same sex marriages. But, from
what I'm seeing, this still is not allowed. And I don't see any mention
of it in the "what's new" info. I'm sure I've seen posts saying the
programmers are working on this feature (or at least looking into it),
but it looks like it still isn't there. Is there an ETA for this feature?

Thanks,
Bob

It only stores the last backup of a file.

There are a couple of glitches with the install, which I thought
should not have happened from a professional organization.

One of those is the pre-install backup (which cautious users would
have done already), in regard to the '_Legacy Cloud_' backup. What's
that? you say ...

It appears that it does not allow one to un-check the Legacy Cloud
backup and just proceed with a _normal backup_ to local disk (or
whatever one's configuration in v8 used - which might have been
OneDrive, Google, Dropbox, etc). And to join (register for) Legacy
Cloud at that stage in the install is also fraught - see below.

Also - a minor problem only - of course v9 is a paid upgrade and the
v8 Customer Number doesn't work. If one is impatient or forgetful, and
installs v9 before paying the money, of course what results is an
install of v9 Standard Edition. But it's easy to pay (at the website –
though a little awkward to locate the page and choose from many
packages; I wanted only the $US26.95 upgrade one, at the bottom).

Out of curiosity, I did register for Legacy Cloud and followed through
with a backup after installing v9 with the Deluxe (paid) Customer
Number. I made some minor changes to my Legacy family file and quit,
so as to allow the normal backup (local disk, or OneDrive etc) and the
newly-created Legacy Cloud backup. Both proceded without problems.

I was tempted to pull the plug on my internet connection, to see how
it handled the absence of a connection to the cloud - not frivolous,
as flakey ADSL connections are common-place.

For that same reason - slow or unreliable internet connections - I am
ambivalent about a Legacy Cloud -only backup.

In fact, with my ADSL connection, at best 35% to 45% of ADSL2+
maximum, registering for Legacy Cloud was a very slow process,
requiring multiple refreshes of the browser to get the confirmation
email sent back to me, then a similar slow response trying to link
back to Legacy Cloud for completion of the registration process.

Fortunately, quitting from Legacy v9 for local + cloud backup was
acceptably quick (I have a small family file, few pictures or media
files).

Apart from its cost to Millennia, having a private company 'cloud' can
be a hassle.

Although I don't have it configured that way now, I think I will use
my (local hard drive folder) Microsoft OneDrive for the regular backup
location, since OneDrive's local hard disk synchronization to OneDrive
in the Microsoft cloud is automatic and fully reliable.

Also, as a part of the purchase, I separately downloaded the PDF user
manual / reference manual for v9. It was worthwhile rembering to get it.

Now, to explore the new v9 …

With the jump from version 7 to version 8, we were allowed to have
both installed on our PCs so we could continue to use version 7 while
we "explored" version 8.

This is what I wanted to do with version 9. When I started the
install, I saw that it was installing to a different folder from
Legacy 8, so I thought I was safe.

But when the install was done, my Legacy 8 program folder is now GONE.

I did not see anything (it could have been there, but I did not see
it) that said version 8 would be purged. And since I DID look and saw
that version 9 was installing to a different folder, all appearances
were that I could have both installed at the same time.

In my book, purging version 8 WITH NO WARNING, especially after one
sees that version 9 is going into a different folder, is VERY
deceptive and "not cool". Especially since my version 8 was the
licensed deluxe version but the version 9 is the free version - so now
I am missing features (that were in version 8) WITH NO WARNING (at
least, none that I saw).

At the very least, some type of OBVIOUS pop-up should say something
about "version 8 will be deleted". At the best, a pop-up should come
up ASKING if we "want version 8 deleted (suggested option) or leave
version

8 available".

Don't get me wrong, you guys do an EXCELLENT job with features and
support. And Legacy is a GREAT program. But I think you blew it on
this step . . .

Yes you can search for hashtags.
Yes they make tags unlimited and permanent leaving the real tags for
detailed searching where you need to tag certain results to use in
another search.

When/why would one use a "hashtag" instead of an "event/fact"? Or would
some things be entered in both places? (putting something in both places
seems like it might be a bit of a pain.)

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 9 REPLACED Legacy 8 (with no warning??)

2017-04-18 Thread Ian Thomas
There are a couple of glitches with the install, which I thought should not
have happened from a professional organization.

One of those is the pre-install backup (which cautious users would have done
already), in regard to the 'Legacy Cloud' backup. What's that? you say ...

It appears that it does not allow one to un-check the Legacy Cloud backup and
just proceed with a normal backup to local disk (or whatever one's
configuration in v8 used - which might have been OneDrive, Google, Dropbox,
etc). And to join (register for) Legacy Cloud at that stage in the install is
also fraught - see below.

Also - a minor problem only - of course v9 is a paid upgrade and the v8
Customer Number doesn't work. If one is impatient or forgetful, and installs v9
before paying the money, of course what results is an install of v9 Standard
Edition. But it's easy to pay (at the website - though a little awkward to
locate the page and choose from many packages; I wanted only the $US26.95
upgrade one, at the bottom).

Out of curiosity, I did register for Legacy Cloud and followed through with a
backup after installing v9 with the Deluxe (paid) Customer Number. I made some
minor changes to my Legacy family file and quit, so as to allow the normal
backup (local disk, or OneDrive etc) and the newly-created Legacy Cloud backup.
Both proceded without problems.

I was tempted to pull the plug on my internet connection, to see how it handled
the absence of a connection to the cloud - not frivolous, as flakey ADSL
connections are common-place.

For that same reason - slow or unreliable internet connections - I am
ambivalent about a Legacy Cloud -only backup.

In fact, with my ADSL connection, at best 35% to 45% of ADSL2+ maximum,
registering for Legacy Cloud was a very slow process, requiring multiple
refreshes of the browser to get the confirmation email sent back to me, then a
similar slow response trying to link back to Legacy Cloud for completion of
the registration process.

Fortunately, quitting from Legacy v9 for local + cloud backup was acceptably
quick (I have a small family file, few pictures or media files).

Apart from its cost to Millennia, having a private company 'cloud' can be a
hassle.

Although I don't have it configured that way now, I think I will use my (local
hard drive folder) Microsoft OneDrive for the regular backup location, since
OneDrive's local hard disk synchronization to OneDrive in the Microsoft cloud
is automatic and fully reliable.

Also, as a part of the purchase, I separately downloaded the PDF user manual /
reference manual for v9. It was worthwhile rembering to get it.

Now, to explore the new v9 ...

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 9 questions

2017-04-18 Thread Cathy Pinner

Bob,
You can change some Events to a Hashtag if you like. You'd do a search
for the Event and then add a Hashtag to the Search Results list. Or add
a hashtag as well. Hashtags don't have dates, places and notes like Events.

Same sex marriages in Legacy 9 work fine.
You can also change to Gender neutral language for the program if you
choose at Options 8.14. This requires a restart of Legacy to show in the
Ribbon tabs but is immediate on the right click menus - eg Add spouse
rather than Add husband/wife.

I've been thinking about this. There are no new methods in Legacy 9.

Some lines are quite easily isolated using Entire Ancestor line or Entire
Descendant line from a person only in that line, especially if you control the
number of generations it looks at.
However, due to multiple connections between branches that approach can be
hopeless as it is in my family file.

I'm in the habit of tagging the relevant lines that form the branch using the
earliest ancestors and tagging Descendants only. Then I add the associated
people during the export.

However, an easier way is probably to set relationships to someone in that
branch and then search for Individual - Relationship - equal to - Related. Tag
them and then also add parents etc in the export.

With a family line, it seems a more complicated and manual procedure

What must be ke]the in mind is the difference between u]date and upgrade...
u]dates are indeed free, upgrades from 1 version to another do indeed cost.
Too see what, go to the Web page and on the ribbon at bottom of logo on
top, find store and click... then find upgrades on left side... compare to
the upgrade price to find out... knowing that the upgrade will be the
download only version... (install and put in customer#) yes, the black
fri. deal was best by about $4... for the download only version of 8. The
normal price for a upgrade is 19.98 I believe for the download only of
program. So it 14.98 for a new 8 + upgrade... yes. I am uncertain but
normal price for a new licensed deluxe is either 24.98 or 29.98... thus 10
off would be 14.98, same as black friday, or 19.98... but as I said, no
substitute to looking for yourself.

My question is what will EXISTING Legacy 7 and 8 users have to pay to get

at the reduced price and then getting the free upgrade when Legacy 9 is

I am sure many existing users would like this clarified as soon as possible.

Thus I bought another version 8 at $15 on black Friday sale just to hedge my
bet the upgrade would be more than $15.

I ordered it and on the confirmation of the order, the information about the
download was on the confirmation as I recall. You might go back and check it.
If not they can sent it to you again I am sure.

I purchased Geoff's new book Legacy Unlocked which was $19.95 and I was
supposed to get a free version in .pdf format. The .pdf format book never
arrived by e-mail and I wonder why or how am I supposed to get it? Also, Geoff
stated it was written with Legacy 9 in mind. When might we expect Legacy 9 to
be available and will it be an upgrade to 8 for free or will we have to
purchase a new book and Cd?

Larry,

If similar to my order, the download link for the pdf book should have been
at the bottom on your order receipt (emailed). I also noted a download link
on the web page that confirmed the purchase. Finally, I received a separate
email later that day (Oct 28th) with a download link for the book. If you
received a receipt via email, check that.

Larry and Thomas,

I believe Geoff mentioned that while the pdf version of the book was
available, the actual printed copies of the book would not be available
until later in November. I tend to believe we will see the release of Legacy
9 about that same time (perhaps before).

The pdf should have arrive instanteously. I would contact Support with the
order number and I bet they would get you that.

As for 9, I'm clueless when. Seems odd to sell a book for a product not out
on the market, unless there was some issues that showed up in the final
testing that delayed it's released.
