[LegacyUG] Not Receiving Mailing List Messages

2013-12-31 Thread Kay Fordham
This is a known issue that occurs every time I unsubscribe for periods of time
while on lengthy travel. I later subscribe and receive confirmation but no
messages. I can, however, contribute to the list. Why has this problem not been
addressed and rectified?

Thanks,
Kay Fordham

Re: [LegacyUG] Not Receiving Mailing List Messages

2013-12-31 Thread circe
I tried subscribing about a year ago. Waited for a week with no messages,
the "Report a problem" address wasn't visible, had no idea who to write to
so finally just gave up. Even this time I kept hitting the "click on
this link to
confirm your subscription" daily for at least a week and got nowhere
until I
pestered the list with messages.

2014-01-01 Thread Ward Walker
I also agree with Robin. However, I am a big fan of temporary workarounds, as
people here might have noticed. Why can’t Legacy place a notice on the
instruction page that subscribers receive, just like they already do when
warning people that the URL link might be broken into two parts? Such a notice
would say to contact Support if LUG e-mails do not start flowing within a day
or so, and would mention the list archive as a means of checking.

It may be a mailing list completely separate to Legacy, but it must surely
create extra work for the support staff, and also very frustrating for those
that want to join, and don't receive any emails, or in fact don't get any
response at all on joining.

Shouldn't it be something that Legacy wants to fix, and create satisfied users
of Legacy.

If the responsibility of the mailing list has been contracted out, shouldn't
Legacy request that the contractor fix the problem, or else they should fire
the contractor and  contract it out to another who will ensure this doesn't
happen.

I don't believe that it cannot be fixed.  Most things like this are fixable.
How many other similar lists have this problem?  I belong to a few, and
haven't had any problems with them.

It doesn't look good for Legacy public relations, or aren't they worried about
that?

Maybe they don't want too many joining the list???

Helen,

This isn't a Legacy "big" and there is nothing that Legacy can do to fix it.

By my understanding, the "bug" is with the mailing list program which is a
completely seperate program to Legacy.

Legacy support staff know how to get subscribers manually subscribed when
they have issues with the automated process, but can't do anything more.

Let's not blame Legacy for this issue - that would be like blaming your
mother for wet grass every time it rained.

Kay,
The solution is very simple and has been mentioned on this list over

email, all you have to do is send an email to support and request that they
subscribe you manually.  There is no need to get upset about it.

Re: [LegacyUG] Not Receiving Mailing List Messages - Suggested Workaround

2014-01-02 Thread David Newton
I just thought I would stick my foot in here as someone who has suffered
this problem a few times. I have yet to get a gmail address working
properly so I changed to my ISP supplied email which was fine until I
unsubscribed for the Christmas break. Subscribing again fed me no
messages although I could still write messages to LUG. I have had to
make use of the alias facility of my ISP email address and I am now
receiving the list again.

There seems to be a feeling that it is not the fault of Millenia and
that they have no control having outsourced the list. It might be worth
recalling what Millenia state quite clearly on the LUG Guidelines

"The LUG is not a free forum for political or social commentary,
activist issues, religious opinion or morality lectures. Millennia
Corporation reserves the right to ban discussion of "hot button" topics
that are divisive; disruptive to the LUG; or are not in line with the
purpose of the LUG.

Millennia Corporation reserves the right to remove without warning any
subscriber who violates the purpose of this forum; who ignores warnings
from the LUG Administrator; or who violates the rules of LUG etiquette."

It is hard to see how they can achieve these ends if they do not have
control of the mailing list

2014-01-02 Thread Ron Bernier
First, I and many others have no problems receiving Legacy UG messages
using gmail accounts.

Second, no one has said that Millennia does not control the content
and use of the list. What has been said and is a fact, Millennia does
not have control of the server/service that hosts the list. The
reality is, the company that Millennia is using to host the service
seems to be incapable of correcting what has been a long term
recurring issue with many (not all) subscriptions.

2014-01-02 Thread David Newton
I am glad that you and many others have experienced no problems with
this list. I would be even happier if that applied to me.

This topic should perhaps be banned.

Clearly subscribed members of a mailing list should have the right to
expect to see the messages that are sent to the list but in view of the
fact that this is a long term problem yet to be resolved there is
probably little point discussing it. I agree with the suggestion by Ward
Walker - instructions on the 'verify your subscription...' email as to
what to do if the list messages do not appear and then perhaps we can
get to discuss Legacy software rather than the LUG mailing list.

Saw this in an email from Michelle in Support, to the latest victim of this
problem

/Please send an email to supp...@legacyfamilytree.com and we will send the info
through to the person that can manually subscribe you to the list. We like the
requests to come through our tracking system. I am sending this message to
the list as well as to your email address (the revised one that you sent) so you

From this I would surmise that the people at Millennia do control who gets full

Re: [LegacyUG] Not Receiving Mailing List Messages - Suggested Workaround

2014-01-02 Thread Sherry/Support
We ask that all requests for support go through our tracking system so
we have a history for reference if the issue comes up again or if a
tech who is working with you is out for an extended time, another tech
can step in and help resolve the issue. Not to mention the hundreds of
emails we get to our personal email addresses for all the company
lists we're on - it's real easy to lose track of a customer's ticket
that's in our own email box!

We do not control who is in the list or who isn't unless they
"misbehaving" on the list, then we will remove that person. It's
*very* rare that we do that.

There is no "full" or "partial" access to the list. You're either on
it or your not!

Sherry

I don't know - it's something in the software, a third-party program.
We only manage the *names* on the list, not how the software works.

Thanks Sherry. Has anyone within Legacy thought to find out what the
problem is and have it fixed? Surely, someone must be responsible for
having this run smoothly.

If there are problems or bugs in the main Legacy Family Tree program,
it is looked at and fixed. There is a procedure for that.

There appears to be no-one responsible for this third-party program,
even though Legacy uses the program.

This is exactly how I handle all my mail lists. When I set a list message
stream to filter to archive or trash, I set a reminder in my Calendar to turn
off the filter in one or two weeks' time or whatever, so that I can resume
reading at the right time. It's easy, and it works, and it means no list admin
hassles.

You're right about the unsubscribing but since the final LUG rule of
etiquette requests that you temporarily unsubscribe when going away and
using an autoresponder I assumed that temporarily unsubscribing would
not be a problem. Had I realized the problem that it was going to cause
I would not have done it.

I have no idea what the problem is with gmail perhaps it is something in
my setup. It's not a major problem for me just an irritant.

I rarely use autoresponder mechanisms, except to those on my 'white list'.
Mostly, I guess, because it's a surefire way to let those wicked spamsters know
they've hit a 'live' address. Lists, like Legacy Support, will never 'know'
they're being temporarily sent to a bit bucket. I used Googlemail in the past,
and I have to say that Legacy Support emails rarely came through, and I
initially thought it was just very low volumes of traffic. Since I moved to
'Outlook.com' as my primary e-mail address, the traffic has gone right up, so
much so that I thought I'd made a mistake upgrading to Legacy 8! (Mistake in
the sense that there are many reports of problems, but I'm certain this is just
part of the natural cycle of major upgrades in any such product.)

So they can then nag their list-manager into fixing it,
maybe? Otherwise, they've got word-of-mouth, not
documentation, of the severity of the problem.

The reason for that etiquette rule becomes evident if you have ever been on a
list that is bombarded with autoresponder messages from some oblivious
vacationer. It doubles the list traffic as every message is promptly followed
by the same message that so and so is on vacation... It could be said that
autoresponders are the spam of the self-important.

Don

I'm sorry if I didn't make my point clearly. The Rule gives the
impression that temporarily unsubscribing from the list is
straightforward, and may be it is for most, but for me it wasn't. This
is the point I was trying to make with the remainder of the sentence
that was left out of your quote from my email:
"I assumed that temporarily unsubscribing would not be a problem."

I was not complaining about the rule and I totally agree with you about
the use of autoresponders on mailing lists.

RE: [LegacyUG] Not Receiving Mailing List Messages - Suggested Workaround

2014-01-05 Thread Don Hanson
David,
I think we just nailed the root of the problem. In any writing, the author and
reader may not have exactly the same experiences and therefore may make
assumptions that lead to mis-understandings. I have administered mail lists and
would not assume that unsubbing and re-subbing are straightforward and would
not cause unforeseen problems. So, I discounted that and honed in on the
autoresponder. With that bias, I would look to other ways to prevent an
autoresponder message from clogging the list other than unsubbing. If I were
writing the list, I would want to make the suggestions as simple as possible
for the majority of readers. The simple solution, will not necessarily be the
one that I would use, but it would be the one requiring the least amount of
explanation or reader expertise.

None of that is to point the finger of blame towards anyone. It's just
acknowledging that any communication will be far less precise than either had
hoped. Heck, I sometimes read my own notes and wonder what I meant!

Re: [LegacyUG] Not Receiving Mailing List Messages - avoid unsubscribing for vacations

2013-12-31 Thread Ward Walker
Kay, circe,

There is another solution: don’t unsubscribe. Just prior to your trip, go to
the webmail page for your e-mail provider and set up a filter. Filter all
e-mail with [LegacyUG] in the subject line to either a folder or the trash.
When you return, undo the filter. If you used a folder, you can do a quick scan
of the LUG e-mails before deleting them.

Kay,
The solution is very simple and has been mentioned on this list over and over
again. If you have subscribed to the list but are not receiving email, all you
have to do is send an email to support and request that they subscribe you
manually. There is no need to get upset about it.

Sounds easy, doesn't it! Not quite. How is a new user to know to e-mail
Support, even if he can find the address, unless he reads your message
first?
I trusted Legacy, I trusted then to know what they were doing. That's why I
clicked on the link daily for a week, waiting for messages to appear, never
expecting another 'bug".

Helen,
This isn't a Legacy "big" and there is nothing that Legacy can do to fix it.

It may be a mailing list completely separate to Legacy, but it must

If the responsibility of the mailing list has been contracted out,
shouldn't Legacy request that the contractor fix the problem, or else
they should fire the contractor and contract it out to another who will
ensure this doesn't happen.

I don't believe that it cannot be fixed. Most things like this are
fixable. How many other similar lists have this problem? I belong to a
few, and haven't had any problems with them.

It doesn't look good for Legacy public relations, or aren't they worried
about that?

Maybe they don't want too many joining the list???
