At our shop we primarily use z/OS for production. We have complete DR

With that in mind I found it easier to backup our VM using what is
already
in place for z/OS, namely varying the VM DASD online to our z/OS
production system then using DFDSS in JCL. This will get you full
volume
backups for the VM LPAR. What it lacks in granularity it makes up for
in
 complete DR with little hassle.

The rule still applies, though: Out-of-band backups require that the
entities that have data on those volumes (whether CP or a guest) unmount
and/or detach them before you perform the backups.

You can do backups while the guests are running, of course, but you risk
the quality of the backup if the guest isn't actively cooperating with
the backup process. In some cases that risk is acceptable and in others
it isn't - it just depends on the particular application. I don't care
about paging volumes. I do care that all extents in an LVM are
consistent.

I mean, given
- Unix ServerA connected to SCSI LUN X
- Unix ServerB also connected to SCSI LUN X then I think no distributed
system admin would suggest using ServerB to backup the LUN while ServerA
is running.

Backups are easy. Meaningful backups are less so.

Have you contacted SuSE about the problems you're having? If there's
something wrong with the update process, you should get them involved so
that others don't have to go through this. After all, that's why you
paid them for a maintenance agreement.

Ok that seemed to be a little help...

When I restart.. The networking card (eth0) will not start..
I have to go into YAST and act like I am going to configure card
Which it is already configured.. And it finishes and then
I have an ip address from an ifconfig...

Ssh doesn't start either..

Any other ideas

Rule #1: Backups are your friend. Never, ever apply maintenance unless
you have at least two known good backups and a working rescue system
handy.

Rule #2: Do rule 1 twice. You'll be a better person for it.

Are there any error messages? If so, what are they?

I bet your Samba server has more than one interface? If so, you can
eliminate these by adjusting the bind = parameter in smb.conf so that
Samba only binds to the external interface (or the list of interfaces
you provide in the bind list).

If you're not running Windows 95/98 clients you could shut down NMBD, I
think. Samba only uses it for supporting the broadcast NetBIOS support,
and all those two messages are telling you is that it is hearing only
its own broadcasts, usually from another interface. You probably should
also adjust the OS level = parm to make sure that your Samba server
is never elected as the network master browser -- while it doesn't cause
problems, the Windows guys get nervous when their stuff isn't in
charge...8-)

When comparing zSeries Linux (assuming z/VM) to other platforms, here
are some 10,000ft views.

1) In addition to favorable IFL pricing, theres reduced software charges
when licenses are based on number of CPUs, i.e. several test/production
systems can share one IFL.
2) No cables or physical interfaces required to network your server farm
together. Cables cause 95% of network problems.
3) Simpler disaster recovery specs, planning and exercise.
4) It really is like in that commercial where someone stole all the

Be nice to have just one..

You can put the kernel in NSS and then everyone can IPL that shared
segment, but that doesn't really get you around needing some per-machine
unique r/w DASD. Although with a shared kernel in NSS and smart use of
basevol/guestvol, you could probably get a system with minimal writeable
DASD.

http://www.vm.ibm.com/linux/linuxnss.html tells you how to do the NSS
trick. Ignore the 64M is recommended bit; I've done it successfully
in 12M. Do it in the smallest size you're ever going to want to run
with.

If you want Linux on x86 to be the 'server' it will need to
be the one serving the shares (and has direct access to the

to mount a share on a Windows machine that has direct access
to the shark, you would use the mount command and need to
provide the appropriate credentials to 'sign on' to the
 Windows server.

I do not know the format of the mount command off hand. It
should be well documented on the Samba web site. David Boyes

First you have to attach a server to the Shark. If you're currently
using zSeries ESCON/FICON, then you'll need a SCSI adapter on the Shark
and reconfigure the drives to be on the SCSI adapter (blowing away any
data on them). The server would use the Subsystem Device Driver (SDD)
to access the Shark and serve the data in whatever way you see fit.

Something that has direct access to the Shark and is serving out the
shares will be the 'target' of the mount command. I don't have the
exact syntax handy, but it would be something like:

mount -t smb ipaddress/sharename -o username=userid password=password

the smbmount man page should have more information.

'Mapping' a drive is netbios/smb type of function. The
equivalent in Linux is smbmount (or mount -t smb), if you
 have the samba-client stuff installed.

But to physically attach a Shark to an Intel system would
require a SCSI interface on the Intel machine, the proper
drivers for Linux to access the Shark and SCSI ports on the Shark.

running fsck on the root disk will fix your problems. After

In case anyone out there is running Samba 2.2.x on any of
their systems, they should know that 2.2.12, which was
released back in September, is the last version of 2.2 that
will be released. That means that the bug just recently
discovered will not be fixed in the 2.2 series by the Samba
 developers.

Your Linux distribution provider may or may not backport the
fix, depending on what version of Linux you're running.

The decision to not put out more 2.2 releases was documented
in the release notes for 2.2.12:
 http://www.samba.org/samba/history/samba-2.2.12.html

Oh, right, you're running 3.0 and an older fdasd than I am.

 Hmmm. Try:

 fdasd /dev/dasd/01ad/disc

Then I think the p command will print the partition table and q
 will quit without changing anything.

Basically, I want to see if partition 1 looks correct.

It doesn't look like the volume group lvmdata ever got
 correctly defined.

What commands did you execute to build the VG? Did you run
dasdfmt on all the physical devices first? Did you use the
right devices (the partitions, not the raw DASD devices) when
you ran vgcreate? Did you activate the volume group with
 vgchange -a ?

Any ideas.. The developer is wondering why this won't work???
Is there other underlying problems

You'll some way to get jobs to and from the system, so that
the card can be configured. The configuration member is in a
VSE library and the jobs to start OSA/SF and communicate with
 the card are in ICCF.

If you have a tape drive on the MP2K, you can get jobs to and
from it via POWER offload (a real kludge and a time waster,
 but doable).

That sounds like the part that is configuring VTAM and CICS for
local terminal support. You'll need a local terminal for telnet

Do you have access to 3270s for the console and single

That sounds like the part that is configuring VTAM
 and CICS for
local terminal support. You'll need a local terminal
 for telnet
access, so that you can get in to ICCF to use OSA/SF.

Ok.. I want to thank all for the help..
 Just 1 more question...

I have changed the ip of the osa card to 0.0.0.0 That way it
will allow any ip address that I apply to linux

Here is what I CAN'T do .. Which may not me a big deal

 Can't ping itseld (192.168.1.13)
And can't ping local host (127.0.0.1)

Any ideas.. The developer is wondering why this won't work???
 Is there other underlying problems

 Thanks again

You'll some way to get jobs to and from the system, so that
 the card
can be configured. The configuration member is in a VSE
 library and
the jobs to start OSA/SF and communicate with the card are in ICCF.

If you have a tape drive on the MP2K, you can get jobs to
 and from it
via POWER offload (a real kludge and a time waster, but doable).

This looks fine. I don't know why you can't ping yourself or

Try iptables -L -n (maybe you're blocking ICMP or something?)

That sounds like the part that is configuring VTAM and CICS
for local terminal support. You'll need a local terminal for
telnet access, so that you can get in to ICCF to use OSA/SF.

Do you have access to 3270s for the console and single

I have a question

2004-09-08 Thread Noll, Ralph

We are trying to change the ip address of this debian we built..
We have been working on this since Tuesday...

We changed the /etc/network interfaces from 10.37.1.21 to 10.37.1.22
Changed ip to 10.123.1.1. Etc..

Seems to be the only thing that will work is 10.37.1.21.. Nothing
else...

Did the /etc/init.d/networking restart

Did the ifconfig

Shows 10.37.1.22

We cannot connect to it thru putty or anything.

Is there any settings that we have missed to cause this not to work??

Any help will be appreciated

Ralph

Default network interface configuration for Debian is in
 /etc/network/interfaces.

3 things have to be right:

 1) IP address
 2) netmask
 3) default gateway

The lines in /etc/network/interfaces for the configuration
should read (assuming interface is eth0):

 auto eth0
 iface eth0 inet static
address=x.y.z.a
netmask=g.h.i.q
gateway=a.b.c.d

'man 5 interfaces' provides all the necessary documentation
 on changing the address.

As far as I know, you need either VSE, VM or MVS on the
system to tinker with the OAT. We always had VSE in one of the LPARs.

You don't need much of a VSE system, you can probably get
with with just a BASIC startup.

OSA/SF is included with zVM and it is a lot easier to setup
 than installing VSE!

As far as I know, you need either VSE, VM or MVS on the
system to tinker with the OAT. We always had VSE in one of the LPARs.

You don't need much of a VSE system, you can probably get
with with just a BASIC startup.

2004-09-08 Thread Noll, Ralph
I now remember.. Found an old oat table in ICCF...

Configuring it this way is about the dumbest thing I can remember..
Going to be a pain in the rear
Going to have to install VSE just to change ip of the osa card..

Can I install vse under vm to real dasd and then ipl the mp2000 from
that???

Thanks for all help

Are you using an OSA2 on the MP2000? If so, do you have an IP Address
in your OAT? It must match the IP Address that you are trying to use in
Linux.

the answer is that you need to add them to /boot/parmline or some such
(look in /etc/zipl.conf), or is it that they show up but the RAID device
doesn't, in which case, I need to think about it?

I currently have a few linux servers running in production
(ZVM 4.4) with heavy usage. Our IFL is only IPL'd once every
few months. Would it be advisable to recycle the whole
machine (and all linux servers running under VM) more than
that ? I was told that linux servers have to be rebooted
periodically to clear out buffers, cache, storage, etc.

Re: LVM under Debian

2004-09-02 Thread Noll, Ralph

Whenever we load SUSE 8.x under z/vm we get the option to setup an lvm
At install time

Debian doesn't seem to have that..

We can only load Debian on physical devices at install time and add an
Lvm later.

Would like to be able have certain sys dirs (/var.../usr..etc)
On an lvm at install time, because these directories can
Be difficult to move from a physical device to a logical device
Once the operating system is up and running...

Been able to accomplish that with SUSE.. Haven't figured out howto on
Debian
Or if it is even possible.

Any comments or suggestions

When I re-ipl... The lvm is gone..added to fstab..
What else is missing

 and add an

Would like to be able have certain sys dirs
 (/var.../usr..etc) On an

Been able to accomplish that with SUSE.. Haven't figured
 out howto on
Debian Or if it is even possible.

Woody definitely doesn't let you do a Debian install to an LVM.

It's not at all clear whether that support will go into the
Sarge installer or not. My guess is (for S/390 anyway), not.
A lot of people (mostly in the x86 world) want it, but
getting the installer to do it right, in the general case, is
surprisingly tricky. Cross-platform partition management is
a really hard problem; parted helps a lot, but it's not clear
that it's going to be stable enough to make work in time for
 the Sarge release.

As I package Sarge for an S/390 release, I'll take a look at
what LVM support in the installer would take, but I would
 certainly not count on it.

For the time being: do a basic (no task) installation.
Apt-get the LVM tools. Create your LVM partitions, mount
them where they should go, copy the old filesystem data to
them, and edit /etc/fstab (if you're doing this with /usr
then you'll need to go single-user, etc...). After you have
the system coming up with the filesystems on the right LVM
devices, *then* run tasksel to load it up with all the
 software you want.

Debian 3.0 uses devfs by default, so your device will be
 /dev/dasd//disc and /dev/dasd//part1 once you've
partitioned it, where is the device address.

Well, it's mounted on /cdrom (really /media/cdrom. Hmm.)
 What is in /etc/exports?

You might want to tell the installer that you're mounting
/media/cdrom, rather than /cdrom. I think debian in that
directory is going to turn out to be a symlink to ., so
whether or not there's a debian there may not make a difference.

Can you just plain NFS mount the CDROM from another machine
(that is, don't even worry about the installation at this
point, just do an NFS mount and make sure you can see it) ?
The NFS server may be restricting connections somehow.

A virtual machine only has access to the data to which you
give it access(dedicated or shared, read only or read write,
 nfs or local).
zVM 5 has good native security and SuSE SLES8 also has EAP
3+ certification (I think Redhat as well but I'm not certain
there) but if your boss is that concerned it would be far
better to purchase additional security packages than to throw
away the flexibility and performance options available only
 if you run under zVM.

It looks like we are almost to the point of implementing a
production linux image which will be an oracle back-end for a
public-access webserver. Naturally the concept of multiple
virtual machines on a single physical machine is a new
 concept for the network/security/sysadmin types.
They are used to a physical tangible box that you can put in
a close and lock the door.

There is some concern expressed by these people about
information `leakage' between virtual machines. My boss has
proposed separate lpars instead to `harden the walls'.
I desperately want to talk him out of this course of action.

What I need is some published verbiage discussing the
`boundaries' between virtual machines and citations (if
any) where multiple lpars running z/vm) are preferable over a
a single lpar running z/vm (disregarding any performance aspects).

 Thanks,
 Greg Smith

 1. That's probably you're problem.
 2. Impossible, otherwise your system wouldn't boot under VM.
 3. Sounds like you updated your parmfile, but never ZIPL'd
 the changes.

 You're welcome.

PS: Wanna make things simple? Make your Virtual Machine
virtual addresses identical to your MP3000 real addresses,
that way the system can be configured and IPL'd in either environment.

Right ipling from dasd NOT reader

 cat of parmfile
zvmlinx5:/boot/zipl # cat parmfile
dasd=0a0e,0a0f root=/dev/dasda1
zvmlinx5:/boot/zipl #

What I did and output from that

zvmlinx5:/boot/zipl # mkinitrd
using /dev/dasda1 as root device (mounted on / as ext2)

Found ECKD dasd, adding dasd eckd discipline!

Note: If you want to add ECKD dasd support for later mkinitrd
calls where possibly no ECKD dasd is found, add dasd_eckd_mod
to INITRD_MODULES in /etc/sysconfig/kernel

creating initrd /boot/initrd for kernel /boot/kernel/image

 - insmod dasd_eckd_mod
(kernel/drivers/s390/block/dasd_eckd_mod.o)

Run zipl now to update the IPL record!

Hmmm. My initial guess would be that it's trying to load the
ECKD driver as a module and failing. That probably means
it's not in the ramdisk that you loaded...but if this is the
default SuSE install, it certainly should be.

When it comes up under VM, you're IPLing from DASD, not from
the reader, right? You might want to bring the system up
under VM and do both a zipl and a mkinitrd (is this what
the command is under SuSE?) to make sure the boot record and
 ramdisk are correct.

Another thing to check is that you have exactly the same set
of DASD defined under VM and in the LPAR: if there's an extra
disk that Linux can see under VM, that might be the problem.
What does /etc/boot/parmfile (or parmline, don't remember
 which) contain?

I ipled from vm's rdr.. Did all the ip,name, netmasketc

Connected via telnet...started yast...
1 of the first things is where is your install medium..
I picked nfs..
Put my ip address of an x86 linux box
Few other questions.. Mount point of /..
Partition or not (lvm)
Then install linux from scratch.. Or some other options
I picked install from scratch..
And here we are to the error msg..

How did you get to this point?

 SLES 8, or something else?

Were you ever prompted for the information about how you're

Were there any warnings or error messages before that point?

 Apparently. :-)

How did you get to this point?

 SLES 8, or something else?

Were you ever prompted for the information about how you're
connected to the 'Net or what the installation source media
was? If so, what did you say?

Were there any warnings or error messages before that point?

Re: Suse install under z/vm

2004-08-03 Thread Noll, Ralph
Ok I figured out my problem..

I was ipling from rdr sles7 and had sles8 cd's

Still could not get the Debian to load

The cd's that I have are Debian GNU/Linux 3.0 (woody)
Binary-s390

Do these seem to be ok??
Is there a problem like SUSE.. Booting sles7 and sles8 cd's?? (which was
MY problem not suse)

Thanks for any comments or suggestions

Yeah, you're not modprobing your dasd driver, which means
you're somehow not using the same initrd. Did you run zipl
 on the 0a0f volume?

 Hello from Gregg C Levine
I'm probably chiming in with an opinion late for this thread but here
goes: On my Intel based systems, I need to make sure the
right hard disk is assigned. Inside the device directory,
 they go hda1 hda2 hda3
 hda4 hda5 hda6 hda7 hda8 hda9 hda10 hda11 hda12 hda13 hda14
hda15, and much further then that. The first time I booted
it, without setting the right disk I received the same sort
of message as your ended up with, a classic kernel panic, in
mine. Incidentally that's from the linux.bat file for booting
my setup using load Linux program for zipslack from Slackware 9.1.

What sort of parm file settings do you have? I suggest you
present us with that. As I said I'm probably landing on this
a bit late, but the error messages looked similar.
