Re: Siri and Orthography
Hello Esther, Your posting below causes me to wonder something else: Is it possible to peruse iBooks stores or other App stores on your Mac and have the item you purchased download to your iPhone when you go into the App store? I find that I am far more proficient on my Mac, in terms of web surfing than on my iPhone. If the answer to this question is in the affirmative, then how do I indicate that the item purchased is intended for use on the iPhone as opposed to on the Mac? Thanks and kindest regards, Mike to On 7,Feb,2012, at 10:37 AM, Esther wrote: Hi Mike, Zack has already answered your question about using the free iBooks app to both purchase and read ePub books. (There's both a store for purchasing books and a library for holding ePub books or PDF books that you read in this app. Your library can include both books you purchase from the iBooks store, and any DRM-free eBooks that you load into the iBooks app, either by emailing them to yourself as an attachment, or downloading them from a linked version from a web page or Dropbox file, then opening the file in iBooks, or exporting to iBooks.) Talking to Siri is available in the Austrian iBooks store. On the main iTunes Store home page, there's a link for Change Country. I just checked by changing my iTunes Store country to Österreich and clicking on the link in my earlier post for Talking to Siri. The link worked, which means that the title is available in your store, and the price came up as 3.99 Euros. The easy way to change back to your country's iTunes Store is to sign into your account, since when you change countries you are immediately signed out. On my Mac I just press Command-Option-F to go to the search field, then VO-Down arrow to the sign in link and activate it with VO-Space. When I enter my login and password, I'll get a dialog window telling me that my Apple ID is only valid for the US iTunes Store, and that I will be switched there, so that I can try my purchase again (even though I'm not purchasing anything). I VO-Space on the OK button, and I'm switched to my account, which in my case is in the US iTunes Store. I think that the restrictions on iBooks titles to German language titles may apply to eBook versions of printed titles that are released and subject to copyright licensing distribution agreements by country -- for example, a popular novel for which different publishing groups in each country will bid on, for distribution sales rights. But titles like Talking to Siri exist only in electronic distributable form, and the authors make the distribution arrangements directly with Apple's iBookstore. There is no print copy of Talking to Siri distributed, as far as I know. HTH. Cheers, Esther On Feb 6, 2012, at 10:20 PM, Michael Busboom wrote: This is helpful information indeed, Zack. Re: Siri and Orthography
Hello Ian, Zack, Geoff and Esther, It works! Per your suggestions, I just announced the punctuation marks as I went, and it worked perfectly. Then, I switched my keyboard to German, spoke German (including punctuation marks) and Siri performed flawlessly. The only downside, when I switched to German, was that my phone still spoke English. I wonder if there is a way to tie the VO output language to the keyboard one has in use. At any rate, per Esther's suggestion, I will buy the book in the App Store in order to refine my approach to speech input. Since my iPhone has 64GB of RAM, it might be possible to compose longer texts using Siri. I also downloaded the Dragon Dictation app, but I haven't tried it out yet. Using a 32-bit USV Device on my Mac
Hello all, I have an Aluminum Macbook from late 2008 with 4GB/Ram and a 2.4GHZ processor. I assume, but am not 100% sure that this is a 64-bit machine. I couldn't ascertain this when I went into the About This Mac option. I have a USB data stick for accessing the Internet during my upcoming visit to the U.S., and I am wondering how I can use this USB data stick. I checked with US Virgin Mobile, and this particular model will only work in 32-bit mode. Is there a way for me to use some sort of utility to emulate 32-bit mode under Lion 10.7.3? My alternative would be to run VMWare Fusion and Windows 7, but then my concern is that I would not be able to use mac applications that require an Internet connection. Any thoughts? Another approach might conceivably be for me to bite the bullet and purchase a USB DSL modem for my parents' phone line. Does anyone know of a reasonably-priced approach? I will be visiting my parents and they live in the middle of nowhere and don't have the Internet. I haven't lived in the States for over 30 years, so I'm pretty clueless about what my best approach would be. Normally when I go to the States, I have access to wireless networks, but that won't be the case for those five weeks. While I could live without the Internet if this were just vacation, I can't during this trip because I am involved in a book translation that is a collaborative project. I then went into the Austrian App Store directly from my iPhone and did a search for the App. One result came up and it was a gratis App called Find My Friends and I from a company calledFastWhere. Is anyone familiar with this program, and can I use it to know the whereabouts of friends using the Find My Friends App from the US iStore? If not, does anyone know of a program that is equivalent and would exchange information with Find My Friends? If I am not mistaken, Find My Friends is an App developed by Apple. If this is the case, then I am wondering why it is not available here in Austria. Finally, I will be going to the States later this month for an extended visit. While I am physically present in the States, will I be able to purchase Apps from the US iStore? Re: Usable mainstream GPS on the iPhone?
Hello Geoff, Esther and others, I'd like to thank all of you for your helpful information. Since I frequently travel to certain countries outside Austria (Germany, UK, France, etc) and only to three or four different states in the US, I think I will go the selective download route. It is nice to know that other apps developed specifically for blind people can simultaneously run in the background. My thanks to all of you and best regards, Mike On 31,Jan,2012, at 9:32 AM, Geoff Waaler wrote: To expand on Esther's comments a bit, I intended to mention that beginning with Navigon NorthAmerica version 2.0 (and presumably also the European version) released last November, it is now possible to selectively install maps by jurisdiction. Bare in mind that the mapping data for main stream products is compressed much more (not to mention more current and less expensive to maintain) than their humanware/SenderoGroup counterparts. To give you an idea of the storage requirements, Navigon NorthAmerica's largest map is California taking up 100.1 MB. Texas comes in second at 96.0 MB. As for Canadian provinces, Ontario at 40.7 MB beats out Quebec by nearly 7MB. Most of the States and provinces are smaller. I'll list a few so as to give you an idea: DistrictOfColumbia=1.1MB Maryland=15.7MB Illinois=38.5MB NewYork=43.8MB NorthCarolina=45.3MB Virginia=34.0MB So, you don't need the 64 GB model just to run GPS apps, though the larger storage capacity is fun, and I'd rather have the problem of having to much space smile. Hi Mike, I agree with Geoff's comments and recommendations but there is one importatn correction: MotionX GPS Drive is only available in the US There is another app that they make, called MotionX GPS, that is available internationally and that is often confused with the first product, but that does not have the features that give turn-by-turn directions that Geoff is speaking of. So if you want a GPS app that can be used in both the US and in Europe, you'll have to choose Navigon. Also, you have to purchase separate apps for Navigon US (or North America, or a region of the US) and for Navigon Europe (or a specific country). The usage format is similar, but the map data is different. The Navigon apps typically take about 1.5 GB each to download. You need twice the space to unpack and update the app. I also agree that you'll want to get the free AroundMe app and/or Where To? -- Discover your next destination ($2.99 from FutureTap). These have a much better interface for searching for points of interest, which can then be sent to the default Maps app, or Navigon, MotionX GPS Drive, TomTom, etc. They'll list matches to your search terms in order of distance from your current location or, you can set this to be a location from your contacts or that you type in, if you're planning travel. These are great apps to have, even if you don't have an iPhone or use GPS apps, and I used both on the iPod Touch before I ever got an iPhone. The really useful function that was added to the Where To app last July is the ability to use the built-in compass on an iPhone or iPad with 3G, and update information on direction and distance as you travel. So, for example, if you search for a restaurant, and then check the detailed screen for your POI, near the top right corner of the screen, yo u 'll hear something like, Direction and distance, right, 240 yards, and this will update as you travel in both terms -- so you could hear slight right or straight ahead, and the distance decrease as you approach your POI. This can be set to use metric distances in the settings. I should probably mention that I've heard that some iPhone users in Scandinavian countries find the POI database in AroundMe out of date, compared to the one in Navigon. That's the only set of locations I know of where users don't really like these POI helper apps. Both AroundMe and Where To work internationally, and also support other language localizations. HTH. Usable mainstream GPS on the iPhone?
Greetings, I will soon acquire an iPhone 4S and had a couple of questions about GPS solutions. 1. Although I know of Sendero Look-Around, I am wondering if there is an app that works with something like Google Maps. It would really be even better if one could get turn-by-turn instructions. 2. I can't really make use of a GPS solution unless it works in several countries. The appeal with regard to Google Maps is that this problem would be solved. 3. Lastly, approximately how much do the GPS solutions that work with VoiceOver cost? Wonderfully instructive and helpful, Geoff, thanks! I think I will have to get a 4S with 64GB if I start downloading maps onto my phone. IMHO, from a VoiceOver perspective MotionX is a bit quirkier than Navigon initially, in that many items are not labeled. For that reason you probably would not use Motionx to search for businesses, but other apps such as WhereTo and AroundMe accomplish this and integrate with Navigon and Motionx, which, considering the price difference renders the Motionx POI search inaccessibility a non factor. I have Navigon and am very satisfied, but if I was making the choice today would go with Motionx. To answer your previous question, Navigon stores all maps on the phone. They now require a subscription to keep the maps up to date. Unlike most reviewers at the app store, I don't begrudge them ten dollars a year, since they do need to pay their provider and have not passed those costs to me for over two years before implementing the policy. In the US app store Motionx costs $2.99 (I believe it may still be on sale for $1.99). This includes one month of voice guidance. The app can be used without voice guidance to plan routes, etc, or you have the option via in-app purchase to subscribe to voice guidance for $3/mo or $20/year. By contrast, Navigon NorthAmerica's fresh maps option costs $20 for two years. I suspect one major advantage of Motionx in your case is that unlike Navigon, you would not need to purchase two apps in order to use it in both Europe and NorthAmerica. Best regards. Re: MagicJack IOS app.
Hello Geoff, As you know, I have two MJ accounts, one is the Magic Jack Plus, and the other is the older, traditional account where you plug a device into the USB port of your Mac or PC. Do you know if the MJ app for the iPhone would allow me to use one of these two accounts, or would I have to create yet another account? Thanks and take care, Mike On 26,Jan,2012, at 6:45 AM, Geoff Waaler wrote: Greetings y'all, While fighting the MJ site to ascertain their international rates I discovered the existence of a free of charge MagicJack app; it was the first one displayed when searching on the string: magicj in the US app store. Considering the accessibility of their Windows and Mac apps I wasn't expecting much, so this app was a very pleasant surprise,. All buttons are clearly labeled. I used the new IOS5 double tap and hold with two fingers (i.e. relabel) gesture so as to reduce some of the junk text that appears in all the buttons -- e.g. s1 asterisk became star, etc. Once this was accomplished, the app can be used much more quickly. Since vo and all other sound is routed to the ear piece upon placing a call, it may help to use head phones the first time and learn the location of the end button which is about an inch above the home button at the center of the screen, and the speaker button which is a bit above and to the right.. This app renders it possible to place and receive calls to/from magicjack numbers on IOS devices via wi-fi or 3G. I have not yet received a call, but my wi-fi call quality seems fine, and the one time I tried placing a call on the 3G network with two bars, I didn't notice any difference except that it longer for the call to complete. I do not have a MagicJackPlus, but even for those who do, this app might be worth considering since it renders it possible to use the mobile phone without chewing up minutes. Those with older MJ hardware have the added benefit of not having to turn on the computer and run that nasty inaccessible addware that MJ calls SoftPhone. I went to AppleVis, but noticed that a review was already written and I didn't have much substance to add. Thought I'd post here in case there are others like me who don't necessarily peruse AppleVis on a regular basis. Best regards. Re: RTF version of IOS5 VoiceOver Manual?
As usual, Esther, your response was delightfully thorough and very helpful. The article I will be translating is by a blind user of the iPhone who wants to chronicle her experience with the device and what strategies she employs to accomplish specific tasks. Understanding the German is absolutely no problem. I won't need to refer to the German documentation at all. I just want to make sure that all nomenclature in my English translation is spelled correctly and properly translated. I'll drink a cup of coffee to your health, all the while saying Thank you. However, I think that an easier way to check the English and German equivalents for terms in the iOS 5 VoiceOver User's Guide is to use the accessible HTML version for the iPhone OS 5 in English and in German. The same sections only differ by using en (for English) instead of de (for German) in the URL address. So, for example, the English version of the iPhone OS 5 user guide is: http://help.apple.com/iphone/5/voiceover/en/ while the German version uses the same address with de substituted for en: http://help.apple.com/iphone/5/voiceover/de/ This also works for individual sections. The section on Accessibility of the User Guide for the iPhone is: http://help.apple.com/iphone/5/voiceover/en/iph3e2e2c13.html The same section on Bedienungshilfen in the German version of the User Guide can be found by replacing the en in the previous address with de: Using this substitution I can find an example of how double tapping to unlock the iPhone screen is translated, even though I don't speak German, just by finding the corresponding text to the section of the VoiceOver User Guide in English and in German. For example, under the section of Using VoiceOver is the description: Unlock iPhone Select the Unlock button, then double-tap the screen. On the same page of the German version of the User Guide, Verwenden von VoiceOver, is the description: Entsperren des iPhone Wählen Sie den Schalter „Entsperren“ aus und heben Sie die Sperre durch Doppeltippen auf den Bildschirm auf. The two different translations are on the pages: http://help.apple.com/iphone/5/voiceover/en/iph3e2e2329.html and for the German: http://help.apple.com/iphone/5/voiceover/de/iph3e2e2329.html I keep a TextEdit window open to paste in the URLs and to change en to de, and then to find the corresponding text on each page to copy. Re: Reading RSS Content Offline
Hello Sandy, and thank you very much for responding to my query. The problem with using the Safari approach per your suggestion would mean that I would manually need to go in, download the content from each site individually and manually save it. What I would really like to do is just grab a whole bunch of content from a lot of different feeds and parse it offline, as it were, picking and choosing what I wanted to read and then deleting the rest. I spend a lot of time away in areas where there is only limited and brief Internet connectivity. I will read up on Instapaper and if it appears that it is a useful tool, I will let you know. At any rate, thank you very much for drawing it to my attention. Then, while in the dog park, I could go through a list of articles that had been previously downloaded and if a title sounded interesting, I would just press Enter and I could listen to the article on my Braille Plus. Does anyone know if something similar exists for IOS5 devices? I guess that what I am asking for is a news aggregator that downloads every article while an Internet connection is available and allows a user to selectively determine which articles are read offline. Re: App Switcher on iOS5 with iPad/iPhone 3GS/iPod Touch 3G
Hello Lynne, The way I accomplish this is to press and briefly hold the Home Key one time which gets me back to the Home Screen, unless I am already there. Mind you, I don't know what Apple calls this screen, but it is the screen where your apps are displayed. Then, I quickly press the Home Key twice, and then the App Switcher screen pops up. I hope this helps. Kindest regards and thanks to you and Gordon for running such a nice list! Re: Data entry on the iPhone 4 with OS5
As usual, Esther, your response was delightfully thorough and instructive. One question I forgot to ask in my original note was about the orientation of the iPhone when entering data. Should it be oriented to landscape or portrait? Along similar lines, does the iPhone need to be lying on a surface or can I hold it while entering data? Thanks so much, to you, Sarah and everyone else who is helping me. Mike On 17,Nov,2011, at 8:51 PM, Esther wrote: Hi Mike, Sarah's explanation of the behavior of the insertion point position describes how to tell where you are positioned in a text entry, and also which characters will be removed when you press the delete key, but I'll try to answer your specific questions by interleaving replies. You might want to check the earlier podcasts at the Vision Australia web site (for the iPhone 3GS, for example), because the concepts of keyboard entry arise very early, and they probably didn't redo podcasts to have separate episodes for the iPod Touch, iPhone 4, etc. Other than this, while there probably are podcasts that demonstrate this, I can't quickly think of one. (Of course, Mike Arrigo's podcasts tend to cover everything, so you could start there *smile*.) One podcast demonstration that might help you out is Kevin Chao's podcast on Text selection. Copying and pasting at: feed://kevinchao.podbean.com/feed/ It's actually more complicated than what you're asking about, but the second half of the podcast describes using the web rotor to move your insertion point by characters and words, and what VoiceOver announces. Michael Busboom wrote: MB: 1. How can a document that is currently being written checked for errors? In other words, must one somehow leave the keyboard app in order to do this? Esther: If you are typing with the virtual keyboard in the bottom half of the screen, you can leave the keyboard up, but move your hand to the top half of the screen and set the rotor to either characters or words. Do this by placing thumb and forefinger on the screen, with a slight separation, and twisting clockwise (or counter clockwise), as though you were turning a dial. Some people find it easier to use their index finger and middle finger, and twist these to make the turning gesture. MB 2. When hitting the Delete button, how does one determine whether the first character of the text has just been deleted or whether the cursor is at the end of the text, and deleting from right to left is occurring? When you're in a text field and double tap, you'll hear VoiceOver alternately say insertion point at start or insertion point at end. The way to check your insertion point in the middle of a document is to set the rotor to either characters or words and then to flick down (to move forward) or flick up (to move backwards). VoiceOver will announce the character or word that you just moved over. Let's take an example. You're in the Notes app and just typed Hello world, and want to review your entry. Currently you're at the bottom of the document. You double tap and hear VoiceOver say insertion point at start, so the insertion point has just been moved before the H in Hello. If my rotor is set to characters, then each flick down moves the insertion point one character to the right. VoiceOver announces each character as you move the insertion point over it, so the direction that you move counts! If I'm at the start of the phrase, I won't be able to flick up to move to the left of the H in Hello. If I flick down to move by one character to the right, I hear H as the insertion point moves from before the H to a position between the H and the e. If I flick down again, I hear e as the insertion point moves over the e to a position between the e and the first l in Hello. But, had I instead flicked up to move by one character to the left, I would have moved back over the H to my starting point, and VoiceOver would have announced H as I moved over this letter from the other direction. If I keep flicking down in an editable field, with my rotor set to character, I hear all the letters announced as the insertion point moves over the letters from left to right: H, e, l, l, o, space, w, o, r, l, and d. Now, suppose I wanted to edit and change world to word. After I flicked down and moved past the l of world and hear it announced, my insertion point is between the l that I just heard VoiceOver announce, and the final letter d. Double tapping the delete key deletes the letter to the left of the insertion point. If I double tap the delete key to the right of the m key and just above the return key in the bottom right corner of the virtual keyboard, I'll delete the l, and VoiceOver will announce the new word, word (instead of world). My insertion point is still before the final letter (d) in the phrase. I can flick down to move my insertion point
Data entry on the iPhone 4 with OS5
Hello everyone, I am having some difficulties entering data into my iPhone 4 under OS5. Although I was able to glean a little information from the Vision Australia podcast on Read2go, I am still struggling. Here are my questions: 1. How can a document that is currently being written checked for errors? In other words, must one somehow leave the keyboard app in order to do this? 2. When hitting the Delete button, how does one determine whether the first character of the text has just been deleted or whether the cursor is at the end of the text, and deleting from right to left is occurring? 3. Does anyone know of a podcast where this topic is handled in greater depth? I only started using my iPhone yesterday, and I really can't complain too much. I only encountered the keyboard entry problem when I unsuccessfully tried to sign in to a website. :) Many, many thanks in advance, Mike --- Mac Access At Mac Access Dot Net --- To reply to this post, please address your message to mac-access@mac-access.net You can find an archive of all messages postedto the Mac-Access forum at either the list's own dedicated web archive: http://mail.tft-bbs.co.uk/pipermail/mac-access/index.html or at the public Mail Archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/mac-access@mac-access.net/. Re: Documentation for iPhone 4, iOS5 and Voice Over
Esther, you are incredible. Thanks so much for all this information. I am currently in Innsbruck, getting ready to attend a Bob Dylan and Mark Knopfler concert, but you can be sure that as soon as I get back home to Vienna, I will start to go through the links you so kindly provided. Thanks again and my very best, Mike On 7,Nov,2011, at 10:01 PM, Esther wrote: Hi Michael, I'll point you to John Panarese's MacForTheBlind web pages that have this documentation in other formats: http://macfortheblind.com/documentation?page_id=12 You'll be able to get .rtf format files for the iPhone iOS 5.0 user guide, and for iOS 5 keyboard commands and gestures. Note that the latter, in particular will not be up to date. So if you care about learning, for example, the keyboard shortcuts and commands for using Braille devices with your iPhone, you should visit the current web site from which this earlier document was generated (Daniel Göransson's AxS Lab page on iOS VoiceOver Gesture, Keyboard Braille Shortcuts, mentioned in previous recent posts on this list): http://axslab.com/ios-shortcuts If you have an Apple Wireless Keyboard, you'll be able to pair it via Bluetooth with your iPhone and use it for both keyboard navigation and text entry. (Note that the documented shortcut for switching between active apps with Command+Tab does not work under iOS 5, although it worked under iOS 4.) Most, but not all, commands can be executed by keyboard, but there are instances where there is no equivalent for VoiceOver gestures. That's also true for the use of paired Braille devices, and timing of your typing with these devices can be tricky. The accessible HTML version of the iPhone User Guide also shows up as a bookmark under the Safari App of your iPhone, and I believe this should come up in whatever language you used to activate your iPhone, or else you may be able to change the language. And incidentally, if you want the iPhone user guide for iOS 5 that Colin linked in German instead of English, just change the two letter code at the end from e n for English to d e for German -- for example: http://help.apple.com/iphone/5/voiceover/de/ If this is your first iOS touch screen device, I strongly suggest that you create a link to the section on VoiceOver and save it as an icon on your iPhone home screen for quick direct access. For example, in the iPhone User Guide you might use the link for VoiceOver: http://help.apple.com/iphone/5/voiceover/en/iph3e2e4218.html Or, you could navigate down to a link for a specific section, like VoiceOver Gestures: http://help.apple.com/ipodtouch/5/voiceover/en/iph3e2e2281.html If you send yourself an email with this link, and then double tap the link when you read your message in mail, Safari on your iPhone will open up to the page you've linked. Double tap the Utilities button at the bottom of your screen in the Safari app, just above the Home button. Then double tap either the Add Bookmark button to add that section of the guide as a bookmark to Safari, or double tap the Add to Home Screen button if you want to add an icon to access that section of the user guide from your home screen. I used this feature a lot when I first learned VoiceOver on the third generation iPod Touch. You may have read Michael Freeman's article in the October Braille Monitor on My Adventures with the iPhone: http://www.nfb.org/images/nfb/Publications/bm/bm11/bm1109/bm1109tc.htm Some of those tips may help you. He references the book by Dean Martineau and Anna Dresner called Getting Started with the iPhone from National Braille Press: http://www.nbp.org/ic/nbp/IPHONE.html This was written for iOS 4, but you may still find it useful, because it covers a lot of the concepts and actions that are part of using the iPhone. I also happen to think that the Accessible World Tek Talk podcast that Dean and Anna made for this book back in February 2011 is worth listening to if you're a new user. If you go to: http://www.accessibleworld.org/ and type in their names into the search box, e.g.: dresner martineau you'll get a link to the mp3 file of that podcast. Another good resource are the Vision Australia Technology podcasts. Go to: http://www.visionaustralia.org/info.aspx?page=2287 Check out the podcasts under both the links for iOS 5 with VoiceOver and iOS 4 with VoiceOver. Finally, there are all sorts of other podcasts out there. Mike Arrigo has done some on Blind Cool Tech (along with everything else!). Dean Martineau did one there quite a while ago on reorganizing the home screen. There are several reviews of apps. Hope this helps. Hi there, I would very much like to purchase Take Control of Spotlight from you. I remember that we pay via Paypal. Please let me know how to proceed. The 158-page ebook is now available for just £2.41 GBP from Mac Access Dot Net. Join Sharon as she explores the hidden depths of Spotlight searching, one of Mac OS X's most powerful yet least explained features. No matter how carefully you organise files and folders on your Mac, it's easy to lose important items. With Sharon's help, you can aim Apple's Spotlight quickly and precisely, and stop rummaging around in the darkness of your disk. After Sharon explains how Spotlight indexes your data and the grammar behind Spotlight searches, you'll examine the many ways you can start Spotlight searches: the magnifying glass in the menu bar, the search field in Finder windows or the Open and Save dialogs, a keyboard shortcut, a contextual menu, or customized and saved searches you've made for yourself. Then it's on to learning how to find exactly what you're looking for using keyword searches, multiple-criteria searches, Boolean searches, and more. And here's where you'll learn the most valuable lesson about Spotlight, which Apple has never fully explained, which is how to search directly using Spotlight's internal search language, making even complex searches quick and easy. Remember, searches aren't just about finding lost files, they're also useful for selecting a set of matching files to work on. For instance, we've used Spotlight to identify which photos in a folder are small thumbnails or which of our ebooks lack a certain phrase. You can even do things like find every GarageBand song in the key of E-flat. You'll learn these search-related techniques: * Improve search accuracy by limiting Spotlight to searching just where you want. * Reduce result clutter by choosing which categories should appear in the Spotlight menu. * Learn what to do when the Spotlight menu doesn't list an item that it should be able to find. * Use criteria bars (and even the elusive Boolean bars!) to create complex search queries. * Bypass criteria bars by typing complex, powerful queries in any Spotlight search field. * Build Boolean searches with AND, OR, and NOT to narrow your search results precisely. In addition, you'll find out how to make your files even easier to find with these techniques: * Customise a file's metadata. * Employ free third-party utilities to give your files useful, searchable tags. * Set up sophisticated smart folders that provide dynamic file organization. In these days of terabyte drives, your Mac has enormous storage capacity, and you may have many thousands of files squirreled away (we don't even want to admit to how many hundreds of thousands of files are filling up our disks!). But with the Spotlight expertise you'll gain from this ebook, you'll be able to retrieve anything on your Mac, no matter how deeply it's buried or how specific you need to make your search. Although there's something in this ebook for all Mac users, including novices and power users, we were particularly pleased to learn more about typing complex search queries, making us faster and more fluid with our Macs than ever before! Training Dragon Dictate without sighted assistance?
Hello everyone, I took the plunge and recently purchased Dragon Dictate version 2.5 for the Mac, German and English. Although the German customer service person was quite knowledgeable and eager to help, she did not know whether or not it would be possible to train Dragon Dictate (I think that's what the software package is called) without sighted assistance. The agent said that the text the trainer was supposed to read would appear on the screen. Thus, I am wondering if I could use my BrailleNote Apex to read the text as it appeared on the screen or if I could somehow transfer each screen of text to the Apex in advance so that reading would be seamless. The sales agent assured me that the version I ordered worked with Lion. Since I don't yet have the software, I can't be more specific with my questions. However, any clues in advance might significantly cut down on the time I might need to be up and running with the product. Hi, Sarah, I checked under Utilities, as well as in the Applications folder. The only program that might be what I want is Bluetooth File Exchange. Voice Input, Braille Output under Lion
Hello everyone, For a lot of health-related reasons that I won't go into, I need to slowly explore alternatives to keyboard input. My thinking is that I would use Nuance products; a recommendation for what to order would be needed. I would also like to use my BrailleNote Apex for Braille output. To make life easier for those who are kind enough to assist me, here are my questions: 1. I need voice input for both German and English. Does Nuance or someone else sell a multilingual voice input package that would fit the bill? I may be mistaken, but I don't believe that Apple sells or produces anything that would meet this need. 2. I assume that speech recognition results are most promising if one uses a good headset with a microphone. what works best with the Mac? As long as I am purchasing a headset, I would also want it to work with Skype, though if it didn't, it wouldn't be a show stopper. 3. I have never successfully connected my BrailleNote Apex to the Mac via Bluetooth. Does anyone know of any documentation that would describe this procedure in detail? Perhaps a USB connection would be better, and comments on this thought are welcome. Re: Address Book under Lion
Hello Sarah, Thank you for your response. I was doing just that, but it seemed an odd approach, especially since sometimes, when re-interacting with something with which one had previously interacted, all the Mac would do was beep at me. Though the approach works most of the time, it is slow, inconsistent and clunky, definitely a step or three below Mac's usually excellent approach to handling things. I will start to look for an alternative to the Address Book and let everyone know if I find it. I believe that I will also write to the accessibility people and apprise them of this sad state. Hello Dane, That's not the issue. I had no problem importing my cell phone contacts. What I still need to do is manually enter hundreds of addresses that, for several reasons, cannot be sent to the unit via Bluetooth. Some of these addresses are in hardcopy Braille; others are in my BrailleNote, but neither in Grade 2, nor computer Braille format, hence the need to enter them manually. Re: Address Book under Lion
Hello Colin, I will try this approach again, but I am not optimistic. I think I will encounter the problem whenever I want to enter information for a brand-new contact. I am beginning to wonder if there isn't an alternative third-party product for the Mac that would integrate seamlessly with the Address Book, once contacts were entered. I have developed a very high regard for the accessibility of native Mac programs, so the flaky nature of the Address Book and VO is surprising. Take care, Colin, Mike On 25,Aug,2011, at 12:31 PM, Red.Falcon wrote: Hi Mike! So you got me curious! Re: Multilingual: Problems downloading additional foreign language voices in Lion
Zack, your suggestion was extremely helpful, i.e. it worked! Unfortunately, VO doesn't let you know that the item (or language in this case) needs to be checked. VO seems paradoxically negligent in this context. After all, since the VO cursor is on the language you want, and since you stop interacting with the language, one might think that VO might say a little more. Your advice was perfect, and I will now enjoy writing in German just that little bit more. Purchasing Lion, International Issues
Hello listers, When I get a chance, I will purchase and install Lion. I am wondering, however, if the process will be as straightforward for me and other expatriates as it is for someone who doesn't have his or her residency in a country other than the one in which the Mac was purchased. Here is my situation more specifically: I bought my Mac when I visited my parents in the United States. When Snow Leopard came out, I had friends send me the DVD from the U.S. I currently live in Vienna, Austria, and I do not plan to visit the States for at least three months. When I go to the App Store here in Austria, will it be possible for me to purchase an English version of Lion? Sometimes, companies automatically assume that if an order originates in a certain country, that particular language will be the default language when the product is purchased. While I don't mind speaking German in the least, I still prefer to work with my operating systems in English.
