Re: Updating Mac 10.5 (password)
Hello, I went and found my install discs and inserted them to check the instructions. I think what you found is simply that the Apple menu (the first menu on the menu bar when you use VO-M) is dimmed. This is because all those operations reference the system loaded on the hard drive, and you are by-passing the hard drive to boot off the install disc. If you arrow across to any of the other menu options on the menu bar and specifically, if you press u or navigate with your arrow keys to the Utilities menu on the menu bar and arrow down, none of the entries should be dimmed. If you arrow down to the Reset Password option of the Utilities menu I think you will be fine. Just remember that the password you want to reset is for your friend -- if he has Administrator privileges. Do not select System Administrator as the account for the password you want to reset. Also, don't worry or try to set anything about keychains. Chances are that if your friend never knew his password that there are no keychains to worry about. You can quit at any time with Command-Q, or by choosing the option to quit from the Installer menu on the menu bar. HTH Cheers, Esther Dr.Khalid wrote: Thanks for the instruction . I was able to choose English from the list of languages, then I pressed continue. I then searched for utility which I couldn't find . So I pressed VO-M , but all the options were dimmed . I didn't want to mess around , so I didn't choose any of these options .. How can I get to utility to change the password ? Any help is appreciated .. There are various keys that you can hold down while the Mac is booting that determine the boot mode. Most of these stand for modes that are easy to remember. C stands for Boot from inserted CD or DVD; the Shift key stands for Boot into Safe mode (a restricted access mode where you only bring up a subset of the operating system where audio and network connections are disabled -- this mode is not accessible, but certain problems can be fixed by just booting into this mode (without logging in), and then rebooting normally; T stands for boot into target disk mode (when you connect to another Mac via a Firewire cable and use its disk to boot the second machine -- this no longer works with the newest MacBooks that have no Firewire ports; D' stands for boot from the hard drive, etc. For the formal instructions see this Apple help article: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/11627.html (Mac OS X 10.5 Help: If you forget your Administrator Password) This describes the boot sequence and how to navigate to reset the password. Just make sure to start up VoiceOver as your first action after the Mac boots from the install disc (while you hold down the C key. You may need to use Fn-Command-F5 on the laptop instead of Command-F5. (I don't remember, so you may have to try both to start up VoiceOver). Re: Blind Ecto users, adding categories and tags to a post, how?
Yes, but Marsedit can't do static pages, which for me is a showstopper, plus there's another interesting quirk in that program. You can add categories, right, but if you don't want some of the categories that you add in the post where you add the categories, the unchecked categories vanish from the list. Don't know why it is like that, only that it is... or is there some place where you can add categories and they don't disappear? /Krister 23 aug 2009 kl. 22.03 skrev Maxwell Ivey Jr.: Hello; ecto used to confuse the heck out of me too. Logging into Gmail
I was trying to access my gmail account via the web at http://www.gmail.com . Although my password seems to work fine for sending e-mail from Apple Mail, it doesn't seem to allow incoming mail. So, my plan was to access the website and see if Mail was actually appearing on the site, but it won't let me login with the password I have been using for a while. Of course the other problem is I had to get help with the damned visual verification since the spoken bit didn't work as expected. So, is there another way to reset a password without needing the visual verification crap? I did get to a reset page and oddly enough after my wife typed in the letters required, it was to send me an e-mail on how to reset the password, but incredibly, it never showed up. Re: Creating a smart playlist in iTunes - I don't get it
I use smart playlists for most of my music (over 7000 songs) and think they are tremendously interesting. First off, before you set rules, assuming you will have more than one, it is usually best if you switch the combo box that says All to Any as that will resolve a lot of contradictions. Once you have your list of rules in place, you just name it and off you go. For instance, I have one in which filters on Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Lou Reed and a few others whom I feel work together. With automatic updating, I was able to rip the latest Springsteen album and the playlist automatically contained the songs. My quejstion is how to keep shuffle from grabbing items outside the current playlist? This happens on my MacBook, iMac 24, Nano and iPhone whether I hit the button or shake the handheld devices. Thus, I jumped from a movement in Brahms Fourth to a song by Eminem an experience that nearly knocked me out of my chair. cdh On Aug 23, 2009, at 11:45 AM, rayna424 wrote: Hi everyone, I know I'm asking lots of iTunes/iPod questions, but I get the most useful information from ya'll, so I've just given up searches. Re: Updating Mac 10.5 (password)
I was able to check the account setting, and it asked me to enter old password. Ok so are there any other users listed in the accounts pane? if so do any of them including your friends show the word Admin under them? if this is not the case then you are in for backing up your data and reinstalling the system. With the install DVD you can only change an existing users password not create users or give them admin permissions. I noticed something strange though; under password, there is a field called password hint (or something of this sort) and the first name of my friend in lowercase was written. maybe its a hint that it is their surname in lowercase? IF he didn't find the DVD, is there other way to update his Mac? i.e. can I download from apple website the updates directly, and install them in the machine. Any suggestion is greatly appreciated. The short answer is NO. This is not windows so without an administrators password you cannot install/remove most applications or any updates at all. If your friend has been doing this ask them how the have. Alternatively if someone set up the system for them find out the password from them. you can always check which accounts have been setup by looking in the /Users Folder on the root of the HD there will be all the accounts listed as their short names which do not contain spaces and are all lowercase. Worse comes to worse. backup all their data then do an Archive and Install with the original install dvd and DO NOT copy their account when it asks you to but make a new one with admin privileges and a standard one for regular use. make the passwords easy to remember but hard to guess. Re: Updating Mac 10.5 (password)
I'm not sure how to reset the password. I have the installer DVD with me, but I'm not sure how to precede. Any help is appreciated .. After the disc has booted and you are presented with the language screen choose your preferred language and then when you get to the start of the install go to the utilities menu and choose reset password. this will present you with a dialog asking for the system disk on which you wish to change the users pw. choose the hd of the mac not the install disk and you will be shown a combo box with a list of users on that system. choose the appropriate one and fill in the fields as stated and hit the reset button (i think it is reset) if all goes well you might now have admin privs normally with a standard user you are presented with an empty password dialog box but when logged in as an admin the short name is already filled in. Re: Skype problems Re: sorry gang, still stuck on the DMG problem
OK, a bit more research and things are straight. I am running the same version. I installed it as an admin user, but only ran it in my own account. Once I ran it once in the admin account the message indicating that this software was downloaded from the internet went away. There are also accessable issues with the initial login screen, all fields are accessible via tabs, but the normal VO cursor movements don't work. So: after installing. 1. start the program as an admin user say OK to the question about running an internet downloaded application. 2. accept the user agreement. 3. Login screen appears. Hit tab until you reach the user name combo box and enter your skype login name. 4. Hit tab until you hit the password field and enter your skype password. 5. Hit tab until you find save password and enable the check box. 6. click OK. 7. Accept the request to use the keychain. (Skype uses your system keychain to save the password) 8. Profile window comes up and fill in as you feel appropriate. (VO works great here) 9. Go to contacts menu and make sure you are viewing contact groups (the menu will say hide contact groups if you have it right). 10. Go back into contact menu and find the contact group submenu there is a presets sub-sub-menu where I recommend you click at least Online contacts These are checkboxes. Re: How to Shuffle within Playlists [was Re: Creating a smart playlist in iTunes - I don't get it]
Hi, The only thing I'd like to add to Esther's great post is that if you choose Shuffle Songs from the iPod's main menu or shake to shuffle, all songs on the iPod are shuffled, regardless of their playlist, unless you have set them not to be included when shuffling as Esther describes. Best, Anna On Aug 24, 2009, at 9:03 AM, Esther wrote: Hi Chris, Shuffle playback uses whatever group you're in at the time you turn it on as its basis for shuffling. So in iTunes on your Mac, if you select your Music playlist in the sources table, turn on the file browser (Command-B), select a genre or artist, and press the Do Not Shuffle button (which describes the current setting) to turn on shuffling (where this becomes the Shuffle button), then start playing music (either by pressing the Play button or by starting from any of the tracks in the resulting songs table and pressing enter), iTunes will shuffle through all the songs in the songs table, playing each exactly once. If you select a playlist, turn shuffle play on, and start playing from that playlist, then iTunes will only play tracks from that playlist (and will leave out any tracks where you have checked the box for Skip when shuffling on the Options pane if you edited the track with Get Info (Command-I)). If you want iTunes to continuously shuffle through the playlist, press the No Repeat button (which describes current setting) to turn on repeat play (this now becomes the Repeat All Songs button) and start playing. Chances are, you turned on shuffle play from your music playlist and never turned it off, which is why you're getting a mixture of Brahms and Eminem. On your Nano or iPhone, navigate to your playlist and then turn on the setting to shuffle songs before you start playing your playlist. Remember that these iPod/iPhone settings stick. If you set your iPod or iPhone to shuffle songs, either from the Settings menu or while playing from a playlist, when you next go to play an Album you'll hear the tracks play in shuffled rather than sequential order. The shuffled setting (on the song level) applies to whatever group of music you're in, and only exempts tracks that were marked as Do not shuffle (such as Audiobook tracks, or any tracks where you checked this setting if you edited the Options tab in iTunes.) Cheers, Esther On Aug 24, 2009, Chris Hofstader wrote: My quejstion is how to keep shuffle from grabbing items outside the current playlist? This happens on my MacBook, iMac 24, Nano and iPhone whether I hit the button or shake the handheld devices. Re: audible.com question
Hi Daniel, Thanks for the tip to download a book. I had been to the Audible site, and seen that I didn't need to download any software, but wasn't sure what the next step was, as I figured I had to do something to authorize Audible on this computer. I do have one question. On my Windows machine, there was actually a folder called Audible Downloads. There does not seem to be a counterpart on the Mac. So, I guess my question has two parts: 1. Re the book I just downloaded, should I leave it in the downloads folder, or should I move it? If I should move it, where should I move it to? 2. To what folder should I copy the Audible files from my PC? ITunes Music? Re: Simple editing in Amadeus Pro
Hi Gene. First of all, I recommend you to do the following: 1: Open up the preferences by pressing command comma. 2: Choose the general tab 3: Move the VO-cursor to the left for some weird reason, and find the playback settings. Set the If selection is empty to Play from insertion point. If you change this setting, your playhead will always follow your insertion point if you moves your insertion ppoint by pressing the left or right arrow keys. If you wanna select a part of your audiofile, you can do the following: 1: Press the spacebar to start the playback. 2: Press the spacebar again to pause the playback when you have found the place where you wanna start your selection. 3: Now, you can choose to select in 3 different ways: 1: If you wanna select a few seconds, you can simply hold down the shift key, and then select by pressing the right arrow key. Please note that the audio has to be stopped or paused to be able to select anything. You can always press the spacebar to hear how much you have selected. 2: You can place a marker at the playheads perfsition by pressing the p-key 3: Or you can press command y to move the insertion point to the playhead, and then press m to place a marker. If you use step 2 or 3 to start your selection, you have to find the perfsition in the audiofile where you wanna end your selection. So start the playback again by pressing the spacebar, pause when you wanna end your selection and re-peed either step 2 or 3 to place a second marker. Now you have placed two markers, so now you have to select the audio between these two markers you've placed. You can do that by pressing command left arrow if you have focussed on the last marker you've placed, or command right arrow, if you've focussed on the first marker you've placed. You can move between the markers by pressing option left and right arrow. When you have made a selection, you can then move the left edge of your selection to the left or right by pressing a or s, or you can move the right edge of the selection by pressing d or f. You can also press e to hear what it sounds like if you delete the selected audio. If you wanna enable the loop playback, you can do it in the following way: 1: Find the Loop playback with the VO-cursor, and check the checkbox by pressing VO spacebar. 2: Move back to the scroll-area, press VO command f5 to move the mouse to the VO-cursor and press VO shift spacebar to gain focus on the scroll area again. I hope it explains how it works. Re: Logging into Gmail
If you can get new email but nothing else works, then the Mac must know your password. You can retreive that password as follows: 1. Open Keychain access from your utilities folder (command-shift-u) 2 Hit tab and enter pop.gmail.com into the search text field. 3. Hit tab a few times, and you should be in a table with just one item. The key for your pop account. 4. Hit command-i to view the key info. 5. Near the bottom is a view password checkbox. 6. You will probably be prompted for your keychain password. If you are reading these instructions, then 99% of the time this will be the same password as your login passowrd. Now you should be able to view what your system things the password is. Best of luck, Jonathan Cohn . In the Systems Preferences window, navigate to the Accounts menu button (using tab, VO-Right arrow or item chooser menu) and press the button (VO-Space) 3. In the Accounts window, interact and VO-Right arrow to the Accounts and Login Options list. 4. Interact with the Accounts and Login Options list and navigate to Login Options. 5. Stop interacting and VO-Down arrow to where you hear Click the lock to make changes. You will need to unlock the screen using your Administrator password. 6. Press (VO-Space) on the lock, then type in your password in the dialog window that appears. 7. VO-Right arrow past Automatic login: and press (VO-Space) the pop up button to select the account you wish to enable. 8. A dialog window will appear prompting you fort the password to this account. Type in the password and press enter. 9. At this point you could use item chooser menu to navigate to the lock, and press it (VO-Space) to prevent further changes. However, you might first want to create another account to use for test purposes, or to log into if you somehow manage to disable the other account. If so, navigate to the Add User button and press (VO- Space), then fill in the user name and password information and create the account, before locking the settings (VO-Space on the lock button). 10. Command-Q to quite the Accounts menu. HTH. By the way, are you a French speaker? C stands for Boot from inserted CD or DVD; the Shift key stands for Boot into Safe mode (a restricted access mode where you only bring up a subset of the operating system where audio and network connections are disabled -- this mode is not accessible, but certain problems can be fixed by just booting intothis mode (without logging in), and then rebooting normally; T stands for boot into target disk mode

Infovox iVox voices and Snow Leopard
Hi, Infovox iVox 1.3 will not work on Snow Leopard. Infovox iVox 2.0 will be required. This will be a free update. As iVox 2.0 required a major rewrite for compatibility with Snow Leopard and Apple has released Snow Leopard earlier than they had said previously we do not have a final release for iVox 2.0 ready yet. Instead, if our current tests are positive we will make iVox 2.0 available as a public beta by Friday, 28 August. If you rely on Infovox iVox do not upgrade to Snow Leopard until you have upgraded to iVox 2.0. Note that if you rely on the older HD voices (which do not sound as good as the more recent HQ voices) you should not upgrade to Snow Leopard as the change to support 64 bit technology made it impossible to retain the HD voices in Infovox iVox 2.0. For most languages HQ voices are available (several new ones are included in Infovox iVox 2.0). Only Icelandic had to be completely dropped in Infovox iVox 2.0 because there are no HQ voices for that language. Re: Simple editing in Amadeus Pro
Hi thanks I'll try that later on when I have a chance and let you know how it goes! Gene - Original Message - From: Søren Jensen s...@coolfortheblind.dk To: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com Sent: Monday, August 24, 2009 9:33 AM Subject: Re: Simple editing in Amadeus Pro Hi Gene. Re: audible.com question
Hi Donna, Just a few additions to Daniel's remarks. You can make things a little more efficient if you copy your Audible files (which can be in an Audible Downloads folder) to your iTunes Music folder, which you'll find in your account under Music/iTunes/iTunes Music. While you don't actually need to download a book, that's a good way to start authorization. Otherwise you would be prompted to authorize your account the first time you tried to play one of the Audible files you transfer to your Mac. If you ever need to de-authorize your Mac's Audible account, for example, if you upgrade your computer or before you send your Computer in for service (in case they replace a logic board or other element that wipes out your authorization record), you can find a Deauthorize Audible account … option in the Advanced menu on the iTunes menu bar. Re: Checking Download speed in iTunes
Hi Robert, Will has answered your question, but in case you want more details, if you select Downloads in the Sources table (below the iTunes Store and Purchased smart playlist) and then tab to the table, and interact, you'll be able to select and monitor the status of all downloads currently in progress. The sources table Downloads entry also announces the number of downloads currently in progress/pending. In the other table, arrow down in the Name column then VO-Right to the Status column and interact to monitor the progress. There will also be a button to pause individual downloads. You'll hear something like: Status 46.2 MB of 109.1 MB - 2 minutes remaining pause announced. If you stop interacting with the table, there's also a check box to permit multiple simultaneous downloads (checked by default) and buttons that allow you to pause or resume all downloads. HTH. Generally, when you download a song, the process will be complete before you can navigate to the place where you can check on the download status. It's only on the longer files (podcasts, audiobooks, movies, etc.) that you may want to monitor the download. I always use it this way i never scan loose pages, also my scanner has the capability (albeit not by scanning both sides at once) to scan both sides of a page wihtout you having to manually turn them. Re: mac mini mic jack
Yeah, I checked all my configuration settings in skype. I am no skype expert but I know enough to get it working on a Windows machine with 2 sound cards. I had jaws speaking via one sound card and skype working through the other. Very nice. But that's on a Windows machine that I really need to get rid of. Anyway, I got smart and asked the google after I posted my question here. So now I'm about as sure as I can be that it's a hardware problem. I guess I can understand that Apple was in a bind. They didn't want to have a mic jack on the Mac mini that is incompatible with all the other Macs out there. But I shouldn't have to buy a new headset to use with my Mac mini either. - Original Message - From: Dane Trethowan grtd...@internode.on.net To: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com Sent: Friday, August 21, 2009 11:47 PM Subject: Re: mac mini mic jack Hi! Okay, just because the microphone worked with the Windows PC doesn't mean its going to work with the Mac I'm afraid and if my hunch is correct - that you're using a microphone which plugs into the microphone jack of a PC and you're expecting it to work plugged into the Line in jack of your Mac - then you're going to be a little disappointed I think smile. I can't answer your garage Band question I'm afraid so let's deal with Skype then. The first thing you need to do is set the audio preferences in Skype, these are independent o the System Preferences for the Mac and are found by pressing command-, in Skype, go to the Toolbar, interact with it and press vo-space on the Audio button. From here you select your input and output, make sure the input reflects the microphone or whatever you're using. I bypassed a lot of this trouble by using a simple USB microphone, Logitech sell one for about $40.00 which does an excellent job, its the same as the one I use. You may also like to consider a USB headset though be a little careful here, some microphones on some sound as though you have your finger stuck up your nose smile. One final thing, to determine what you sound like on Skype, make a call to Skype Test Call which should be in your contacts table somewhere, if you can't find it then go into the View menu and select Show offline contacts On 22/08/2009, at 12:46 PM, John G. Re: mac mini mic jack
Right, well before I go any further, I've just changed the subject line as the Mac Mini - nor any other modern day Mac - does not have a microphone jack smile. You're dealing with 2 different beasts here actually, setting Skype up for the PC is somewhat different than setting it up for the Mac and I won't go into the differences here but I do agree, if you can set it up with the PC then ou'll have no trouble whatever in setting it for the Mac, how many sound devices or whatever you have isn't particularly important when it comes to the Mac, all you need to remember is to set your Skype input and output correctly to what you want. I'm not going to enter into the argument as to what you should or shouldn't have to buy, I've never liked those microphones that plug directly into a Sound Card anyway but that's only my opinion and I've only seen cheap one's smile, one thing to be said for a USB Headset is that it works on every computer with just about every operating system, that's the case with my Logitech Headset and my Logitech desktop microphone so for that reason alone, I reckon they're excellent buys. On 25/08/2009, at 4:46 AM, John G. Heim wrote: Yeah, I checked all my configuration settings in skype. Re: got a message from abbyyFw: questions about finereader for the mac
Anouk, I didn't find the interface to be much of an issue, but I was disappointed in the fact I could not use my scanner because it is a network appliance and not connected directly to the machine. I may contact them again and see if I can push them into making this possible. I was also confused by the fact the preferences was grayed out. My assumption was the software allowed for various preferences to be set, but that menu was not available. Re: Simple editing in Amadeus Pro
Hello, I'm not sure whether people will find this useful, but if you've made a selection, and then go to the Selection menu on the Amadeus Pro menu bar to choose Generate Markers and then just press enter (without changing any of the settings in the dialog window that appears), you'll get markers generated at every silence point (that is at least 1 second long) over your selection. This is really helpful if you want to split off or edit sections at gaps. I believe the markers get placed at the middle of silence gaps. So if you've made a selection by manually placing markers at the beginning and end, and you want to get a clean break, you can generate markers over your selected region, then use s to move the starting point of your selection ahead in time (into the part where someone has started talking), and use d to move the ending point of your selection slightly back in time (where the comment is not finished), then use command-right arrow and command-left arrow to push the selection boundaries to match the automatically placed silence markers at the start and end of your selection. (Hope this doesn't sound too confusing!). Another example: If I record a cassette tape of songs with Amadeus Pro, I can use the Generate Markers option, and if I select all (Command-A) after trimming the start and end, and then choose a time for the silence gap of something like 20 seconds, I can use the Split according to markers command in the Sound menu to automatically split the recording up into its component songs. Cheers, Esther Søren Jensen wrote: True. I forgot to tell that. Another nice thing is that you can read the selected zoom level with the VO-cursor. Re: Installing the new cat
Hey Marie, Well I guess not many people can say for sure right now what the instalation process will be like in detail, seeing as the only people who will have seen it firsthand so far are beta testers and people who grabbed it off torrent sites, and neither will talk about it publically in case Steve Jobs and his heavies turn up at their house with a big stick. But having said that, it's safe to predict that VO will work during the instalation, and that it'll be easy to do. With Tiger and Leopard, the install was as simple as putting in your OS dvd, booting up with the c key held down, waiting a few minutes until the disc spins down so you know that everything has finished loading from it, and launching VO with f/n-command-f5 on a laptop or just command-f5 on a full keyboard. You land in the language selection table, which is set to some variety of English by default, and from then on it's a pretty standard instalation wizard. There are usually a few different choices, you can repartition and format and suchlike. Archive and install is probably the safest choice if you've got the disc space for that, it'll preserve a copy of your leopard system libraries and such just in case the upgrade goes horribly wrong. VO stays functional throughout the upgrade process, you can get feedback at any point, and I've never yet encountered an error that it won't read during the process. Past that, the only reassurance I can give you is that, having seen your posts on list about other apps, you'll be fine with this. Re: curious observation re Cut command
The cut command is not available in read-only boxes and lists. The copy command should be available in this case. Also, I don't think cut is available in file browser, because generally a cut item is only in the paste-board once cut, and if you cut something else that file would be lost. I wonder if any of the multi-cut buffer applications would enable cutting in the finder? I have never tried any of these add-ons. Re: Installing the new cat
You don't need a guide at all. In fact all you need to do is insert the DVD and either restart the machine and hold down the letter c until you hear the DVD begin being accessed by the Mac, insert the DVD, open System Preferences, select startup disk, and choose the Snow Leopard DVD, select restart, confirm you want to restart by selecting restart, and wait for the chime, and as with my previous steps, you wait for the DVD to stop spinning, you press command-f5 to launch VoiceOver. You also have the option to launch the installer on the DVD, which will basically perform the same steps as I explained and will reboot the machine for you. Basically once the DVD has stopped spinning, you can press command-f5 or function-command-f5 for laptops, and VO will launch. If any of my steps are confusing or you have questions, please let me know. However, once VO is up and running, you'll have no problems at all installing/upgrading the os. Re: curious observation re Cut command
The one common thread I can find is that I was working with files, rather than selecting text. So, I was selecting them by moving through the file table. Whenever I went into the menu, I was always able to copy the file, and the file I wanted always showed up as being selected. For any more specifics, I'm going to have to think about it, but let me know if there's more info that would be helpful. Re: Installing the new cat
You can start the upgrade the way you just said yep. The other option is to put the disc in, it'll appear in the finder, and there's a file you can launch on there that'll be called something really obvious like install snow leopard that will restart and boot from cd for you. Whichever works for ya. Can't say I've ever checked the size of an archive, but I'd be surprised if it's anything over 10 gb, so you should be fine. Role on Friday, I'll be queueing like a fanboy as per usual, just in the new Westfield store for a change of scenery lol. Re: voices on os x
Hi, I notice a lot people are complaining that Apple did not include the voices they now include with the iPhone 3Gs also in Snow Leopard. There may be a lot of reasons why they have not done that. I am not sure it is fair to say it is ridiculous of Apple without knowing the reasons behind it. Maybe the company they are licensing those voice from for the iPhone 3Gs is asking a ridiculously high amount per copy of Snow Leopard Apple will sell. Snow Leopard is sold much cheaper than most updates yet has been worked on for two years by a large team of engineers. I think that is nothing to sneeze at. Also, while people accept the lower quality of those voices for a mobile device, would the majority of Mac users accept it for Mac OS X on a desktop machine? Furthermore, do those voices support all the features needed for Speech Manager compatibility, or would that first require years of work? And, what about the third party voices? For Mac OS X there are multiple third party voices available for a wide range of languages. Should Apple just kill that business and possibly stifle innovation on the Mac platform in the voice area because voices in multiple languages already come free with the OS. For third parties it is hard to compete with free stuff, even if the third party stuff is of better quality. I know it would be bad for our business, but in the long run, it might actually also be bad for end-users. Things are not simply black or white. Anyway, I think there may be plenty of reasons for Apple's decision that we as outsiders do not know about. Some of those reasons you and I might consider good others we might consider bad, but I personally do not think we know enough about the issues involved to call it ridiculous, especially after all Apple has been doing these last couple of years in the accessibility area. Cheers, david. On Aug 24, 2009, at 9:04 PM, James Nash wrote: The voices from Acapella are great but it's rediculous that Apple keep avoiding the answer on whether or not they will ever include other language voices as they do in the IPhone. Re: say it's not so apple
The following is copied directly from the Apple site.Find information fast with auto web spots. Many web pages are filled with complex design elements or lack useful HTML tags, making them difficult to convey through a screen reader. So Apple invented new technologies to comprehend and interpret the visual design of web pages, then use the information to assign virtual tags called “auto web spots” to mark important locations on the page. If you’re on a newspaper website, for example, there might be an auto web spot for each lead story, another for a box containing weather or sports scores, and so on. You can jump from web spot to web spot with a keystroke or the flick of a finger. And if there’s a particular feature on a site you visit often, you can assign a “sweet spot” on that page so that VoiceOver will go there first when the page opens. Re: Installing the new cat
First yes, if you reboot the machine, you of course will need to insert the DVD prior to booting. In fact in order for the Mac to boot off the DVD it needs to be in there in advance for you to hold down the c key or set it as the boot disk. As far as space required, I am not sure of the exact space, but figure on around 10Gb or less, but no more than 12Gb total if all the languages are installed etc. Either way, it's going to be less than the current version since printer drivers you don't need will not be installed. Don't worry, you'll have plenty of space as long as you have at least 20 or so Gb free if you do the upgrade. Once things are running fine, you can delete the old system, which is backed up prior to the upgrade process.
