Re: Three running applications?

2012-08-14 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

I wouldn't worry about it.

It might be some app running in the background like dropbox for example. Or,
it might be a function of iCloud. I'm really not sure. But I don't think its
anything to be alarmed about.

Re: Exceedingly scary and confounding problem with on-line banking account

2012-08-14 Thread Esther

Hi Christine,

I read your original post again, and noted the mention of Java, which
is used by some banking sites. Java is not installed by default under
Mountain Lion, and depending on whether you upgraded or performed a
clean install of ML you may have a version of Java that is not
compatible or needs to have a certificate deleted. I'm not clear on
the details, because there are accessibility issues with running the
Java preferences application, so I can't easily check by looking at my
own setup. (We had to delete an old certificate for a Blackboard user
on another list, and use mouse keys to move to change the tabs).

One Apple discussion web site reported this recent exchange:
Installed mountain lion but the web application I use for internet
banking requires java and there does not seem to be an update for java
in OSX ML
Reply:
Type "java" into spotlight. Make sure the check boxes are selected in
the java preferences.

The original poster stated this worked like a charm, but I have no
idea which check boxes are referred to given the accessibility issues
and the fact that I'm still running Lion. The Spotlight instruction
is the way to launch java preferences.

HTH as a starting point. Cheers,

Esther

Re: Text edit and icloud

Hi there!
Happily, I also figured out that somehow when installing ML, it had changed my
icloud settings. So once I went in and unchecked documents, as I don't want my
documents in the cloud, Text edit started behaving nicely again. Yay! No
opening with the strange wizard and saving defaulted to the documents folder.
Yippee! Thanks.

Re: Exceedingly scary and confounding problem with on-line banking account

2012-08-14 Thread Christine Grassman
I did go into reset Safari, kept checked anything and everything I thought
might help -- I did not see reference to emptying caches, cookies, or anything
resembling that. I reset top web sites; reset history; unchecked saved names
and passwords; I think I left only two or three things unchecked. Still, when I
go into my bank's web site, it dumps me as soon as I get to the log-in page, or
right after logging in. It is literally the only web site where I have
experienced this; I cannot replicate it anywhere else where I must log in.
Clearly is something about my computer, though, not the bank, not Safari, not
VoiceOver.

P.S. My husband has not upgraded to ML, so that is the one and only difference

Re: Exceedingly scary and confounding problem with on-line banking account

2012-08-14 Thread Esther
Hi Christine,

I'm not at my computer, so I can't check this first, but try going to
the menu bar (VO-M or Control-F2), right arrow to the Safari menu,
then arrow down to a "Reset Safari" menu option. I think one of the
submenu options you can check is to clear or empty the cache when you
perform the reset. Only check the options you want to take effect
with your reset.

HTH. Cheers,

Anohter thing you could try, is the Reset safari option, which is found in the

Re: Preview Pane in Mac Mail (Mountain Lion)

2012-08-14 Thread Alex Hall
It worked for me, and nothing is marked as read once I arrow over it anymore.
unfortunately, I can no longer use vo-j, which I wouldn't mind if cmd-o didn't
read the subject and some other text all over again before reading the message.
Also, the handy feature, where arrowing would decide in which direction focus
moved when deleting seems to no longer work either, so focus always moves up. I
suppose it's a trade-off...

I looked in Safari preferences, and under the Privacy tab, there is references
to which cookies to allow, but I did not see any option for clearing them. I
also cannot locate a general "empty cache" Looked in Security as well. .

Exceedingly scary and confounding problem with on-line banking account

2012-08-14 Thread Christine Grassman
Since upgrading to ML, I have paid some bills with my on-line banking site with
no problems whatsoever. Today, though I was able to log on successfully
multiple times, as soon as I attempted to do *anything* on the site, I was
thrown off, and a "problem report" came up. When I tried to quit out of Safari
and go back in again, there was the banking site, with the log-in page, waiting
for my information again.
I first closed all windows and tried again. No luck. I rebooted and tried
again. No luck. I called my bank to ensure that no one besides me was
attempting to log in. They said my log-ins were being recorded, and that only
one IP address was recorded. Phew!
I was then told to go in Security, uncheck Java script, but check Java, and
uncheck "allow plug-ins". Then I was told to go to "empty cache" -- but I could
not find this animal. The bank's tech rep said it should be the seventh choice
down in the Safari menu, but I did not find it. The only thing I could find
was "clear history" -- but could not find cookies, or clearing cache, etc.,
When I logged onto the account on my husband's Mac, all went fine. But no such
luck on mine. What is going on? Any ideas?
Is it okay to leave the Java, java script, and plug-ins as suggested by the
bank rep, or should I return to default settings to avoid problems on other
sites?

Christine

Re: Please explain disclosure triangles

2012-08-14 Thread Mary Scott
This is so super. Thank you. My son spent time with me today and helped me so
much. I discovered that my biggest issue with opening files is that I did not
realize how long I had to wait before the file actually opened. I tend to be
impatient and my son just kept telling me to wait and let the computer do what
it needs to do. So if there are impatient souls out there, waiting is good
advice. He also fixed my iTunes by completely recreating it. It was very

 Hi,

 Try the following.

 1. Removing the Preview Pane in Classic layout:

 • Navigate to the Horizontal Splitter that is to the right of the Messages
 table.
 • Press VO-cmd-f5 (add FN if needed). This will bring the mouse to the VO
cursor and announce where the mouse is and it should read "Horizontal
 Splitter".
 • Double-click on your Trackpad or alternatively, you can press near the
top of the Trackpad and drag to the bottom. Make sure in this case that
you actually make the Trackpad button depress so that the drag action will
 work.

 2. Removing the Preview Pane for non-Classic layout:

 • Navigate to the Vertical Splitter just to the right of the Messages
 Column Group.
 • Press VO-cmd-f5 (add FN if necessary) to bring the mouse to the VO
cursor. It will announce Vertical Splitter if it did what it was supposed
 to do.
 • Double-click on the Trackpad or alternatively, put your finger near the
left hand side of the Trackpad, then drag to the far right and release.
As in the first case, make sure that you depress the Trackpad button so
that the dragging process will occur.

Note that in the Classic layout, you are dealing with a Horizontal
Splitter and in the non-Classic layout, you are dealing with a Vertical
Splitter. Each case requires a different dragging direction if you choose
 that option.

There are a couple of ways of determining if it worked. Firstly, you can
navigate around the Mail screen and if you don't hear anything about
"Message Content Area", life is good.

The second method is a little more complicated but tells you for sure. In
Classic layout, navigate to the Horizontal Splitter to the right of the
"New Mailbox Action" menu. You'll notice two Horizontal splitters, one
after the Messages Table and this one that I'm talking about. Once you've
located this Horizontal Splitter, Interact with it and press VO-down. Vo
will announce "Collapsed" which is what you want to hear. In non-Classic
layout, navigate to the Vertical Splitter just to the right of the
Messages Column Group and Interact with it. Press VO-right and VO will
announce "Collapsed" if the Preview pane is gone.

 HTH.

RE: Growl in Mountain Lion

2012-08-14 Thread Missy Hoppe
I love growl for dropbox notifications. I don't use it for much else at this
point since Pianopub seems to be broken, but it
can be used for all kinds of neat things. I'm sure others can be of more
assistance, but once you get it set up the way you
want, Growl is awesome. I was having trouble getting the paid version to work
under mountain lion, so I just went back to the
last free version. It might not be as fancy, but it does what I need it to do.
Good luck, and I hope this helps a little.

Subject: Growl in Mountain Lion

Hey all,

I have never used Growl before and have been reading through all the threads on
it to get a better understanding, but still
am not sure what the whole point of it is. I was surprised to learn that Growl
is installed on my system, as I don't recall
ever installing as saw that you had to buy it in the app store. Is the paid
version more advanced?
What do people use Growl for? I do not need to be notified of incoming mail
messages as I am constantly checking my mail, but
would love to get notified of when certain friends tweet or post to Facebook.
Does Growl work with Menu Tab or Night Owl? I
did see Night Owl in the applications for Growl in my system preferences, but
again am not sure what it does. I was also
surprised to learn that all of my applications were enabled, but I never get
any kind of notifications.
I did read something about turning speech on, so maybe this whole time I have
had little Growl messages popping up but never
saying anything.
Thanks for any help.

Re: multiple messages from macvisionaries group

2012-08-14 Thread Ioana Gandrabur
Hi,

Just a quick update that the advanced imap controls that allow you to choose
what to synchronize is now a main feature of mail settings. No need to look for
it in labs. I did have to ask my husband for help since I could not locate the
show and hide labels in imap in the basic html google site.
I chose to not synchronize the all mail folder.

I was however able to set filters in gmail in basic html site.
My personal setup is a filter directly in gmail to apply macvisionaries labile
to messages sent to that address. I think I told gmail to skip inbox to avoid
duplicates.

Hope this helps,

Ioana

Growl in Mountain Lion

2012-08-14 Thread Brian Fischler
Hey all,

I have never used Growl before and have been reading through all the
threads on it to get a better understanding, but still am not sure
what the whole point of it is. I was surprised to learn that Growl is
installed on my system, as I don't recall ever installing as saw that
you had to buy it in the app store. Is the paid version more advanced?
What do people use Growl for? I do not need to be notified of incoming
mail messages as I am constantly checking my mail, but would love to
get notified of when certain friends tweet or post to Facebook. Does
Growl work with Menu Tab or Night Owl? I did see Night Owl in the
applications for Growl in my system preferences, but again am not sure
what it does. I was also surprised to learn that all of my
applications were enabled, but I never get any kind of notifications.
I did read something about turning speech on, so maybe this whole time
I have had little Growl messages popping up but never saying anything.
Thanks for any help.

Re: Cannot copy track from shared library to my own computer

2012-08-14 Thread Ioana Gandrabur
HI Tim,
Thanks for your answer.

Unfortunately I still cannot locate that famous copy button. I see the music in
question but after the list table with music I want to new playlist. I
activated the shortcut menu of the track I want to get and found a copy option.
I pressed it but even after 1 minute it still is not in my library. I checked
the apple id. IS there a setting on the remote computer that I need to check
that it allows copying items to an other one? Thanks for your elp in solving
this mystery.

Best,

Ioana transfer it goes

Re: multiple messages from macvisionaries group

Thanks for the link. I think I have solved the problem. Had to do this by
resorting to the standard view in gmail which was fiddly but I think I have
managed to uncheck all the boxes. Removing labels by itself did not help.

Re: Calendar Appointments on the Mac and Syncing Google Calendar to iCal

2012-08-14 Thread Harry Hogue
Now that I have learned to put appointments on my calendar by writing "Meeting
on 14 August at 15:00," for example, I have found no problems with calendar
whatsoever. I do with when adjusting alerts that we didn't have to keep
tabbing back to where we were in the event details scroll area, but that's my
only real complaint.

I've noticed that my iCal events sync with Google Calendar but not my Google
Calendar to my iCal (the list of holidays, for example, on Google Calendar, do
not show up on my iCal, but my friend's calendar I share with her show up on
both of my calendars [Google Cal and iCal]). Does anyone know why this might
be?

As concerns seeing a list of appointments in a list, I find that tabbing
between appointments works very nicely for day, week, or month view, but I've
not had much luck with the year view. Has anyone else experienced this?

This is my observation of the app as you explore, starting with the

There is the toolbar which you can interact with. I think another view
should be added to the calendar view switcher. I think there should be a
"List View". This would make the calendar behave more like iOS. I also
think the Today button should be moved to the toolbar as well as a button
for invitations and for adding a new calendar.

After you stop interacting with the toolbar, there is the vertical
splitter (why do we need to care about this? I would rather not hear VO

of calendar types into view. Perhaps calendar view should actually be
moved to the view menu at the top of the window. There could be an entry
called Calendars, with a sub menu which you can then place a tick against

the year view selected) ). I think it would sound better if VO rad all
this out as "Today is the 10th of August 2012, Year view is selected".

Next, as long as you do not interact with the calendar area, there is a
horizontal splitter, yet again, why does VO even need to know this?

I have my calendar currently set to year view, so let's interact with it
 and explore that.

The first item is the previous year button, and the next item is the
today button, should this not say what the current year is? for example
2012? No matter which view I use, the today button is always read out
which is not relevant when in month or year or week view, this should
behave more like iOS. . The next element is next year button.

Next is The 2012 (or whichever year you have selected). VO tells you this
is a grid and tells you how many rows and columns there are. Is this
relevant? and why do we even need to interact with this grid? Should it
not be visible by default? This is one of my biggest complains about the
calendar app, there are too many levels to interact with. Can you imagine

That is the thing, the full list is present in the day view.

I could understand if some of the table and row stuff was actually relevant,
but you don't hear iOS reading it all out, and I can't find a way to switch it
off.

In a day view like this, wouldn't the list only be events for that
given day? I was looking for a list of all available appointments

chronological order like it does on IOS.

You seem to have a lot of criticisms for the calendar ap. I don't
mind most of it. I think some of the verbosity you are complaining

Hi,

I'm not sure if I understand your question totally. In standard view, your
messages are in conversations and by default, a couple of lines of the messages
is displayed. Vo will read this summarized version of the message and in some
cases, this will be the entire message if the sender is not extremely wordy.
Otherwise, VO will normally cut off if it is a longer message.

Re: multiple messages from macvisionaries group

2012-08-14 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi, Brian,

In Gmail, you can first set up labels and then set up filters to allow messages
to be sorted by these labels. However, this requires a lot of website
navigation. You can do this from any computer using any platform.

In Mac Mail, you would first create new mailboxes from the mailboxes menu.
Then, in Mail Preferences, which can be reached from the Mail Menu inside the
app, or by pressing command-comma, you would go to the rules button and set up
message rules this way.

If you need further instruction, depending on which way you want to accomplish
this, I'd be happy to help.

Teresa

Re: Cannot copy track from shared library to my own computer

2012-08-14 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

If you have Home Sharing turned on for both machines, with the same Apple ID,
you'll see the other computer in your Sources List under the Devices section.
If there is no Devices section, then your Home Sharing is either not set up
accordingly or there is a network issue. Once you have focus on the other
computer, expand it with VO-back slash, then wait a few seconds for it to
populate, and navigate down to the Music Library or Playlist you wish to grab
songs from. You can then either search with the Search field or navigate
through the Table to locate the items you wish to transfer. Once selected,
Stop Interacting with the Table and navigate right to the Copy Item button and
things will move over. They will not be placed in any specific playlist, they
will simply be copied over to your Music Library and placed in the Music
section within your Sources List. You can subsequently add them to any
playlists you wish. Now, if you had iTunes Match, it can be configured so that
whatever is put in a playlist in one computer is automatically put in the same
playlist in the second computer. It is a very cool set up, although one has to
be willing to spend the yearly subscription fee to have the iTunes Match
service.

Later...

Re: Ripping from cd to .ogg vorbis

2012-08-14 Thread Chris Blouch
iTunes doesn't present the full QuickTime export options so even if you
have the xiph ogg plugin for quicktime iTunes won't present that option.
QuickTime Pro will export in any format supported by QuickTime
(including ogg with the plugin) but you have to buy the pro version.

Re: Calendar Appointments on the Mac

2012-08-14 Thread Chris Moore
You have to switch to day view to see a list. Personally I think a list view
should be added to the toolbar.

I wrote to Apple expressing my disappointment with Calendar and felt it should
be more intuitive, be more iOS like and require less interacting.

This is my observation of the app as you explore, starting with the toolbar:

There is the toolbar which you can interact with. I think another view should
be added to the calendar view switcher. I think there should be a "List View".
This would make the calendar behave more like iOS. I also think the Today
button should be moved to the toolbar as well as a button for invitations and
for adding a new calendar.

After you stop interacting with the toolbar, there is the vertical splitter
(why do we need to care about this? I would rather not hear VO announce this.
I can appreciate it is there for when you bring the list of calendar types into
view. Perhaps calendar view should actually be moved to the view menu at the
top of the window. There could be an entry called Calendars, with a sub menu
which you can then place a tick against the calendar or calendars you which to
be be visible such as all calendars, home, work, birthdays etc.
) After the vertical splitter, VO says "Friday, 10 August 2012, year, Calendar
area" (this is the date of myself writing this message, and I had the year view
selected) ). I think it would sound better if VO rad all this out as "Today is
the 10th of August 2012, Year view is selected".

Next, as long as you do not interact with the calendar area, there is a
horizontal splitter, yet again, why does VO even need to know this?

I have my calendar currently set to year view, so let's interact with it and
explore that.

The first item is the previous year button, and the next item is the today
button, should this not say what the current year is? for example 2012? No
matter which view I use, the today button is always read out which is not
relevant when in month or year or week view, this should behave more like iOS.
. The next element is next year button.

Next is The 2012 (or whichever year you have selected). VO tells you this is a
grid and tells you how many rows and columns there are. Is this relevant? and
why do we even need to interact with this grid? Should it not be visible by
default? This is one of my biggest complains about the calendar app, there are
too many levels to interact with. Can you imagine how popular google search
would be if you had to follow 6 hyperlinks before you finally got to the search
box?

After interacting, I am told by VO that I am on August, and that is the 8 of 12
and lists the number of columns and rows within that month. Again, is this
relevant? do we really need to know how many rows and columns can be found
inside August? and do I need to be told it is month 8 of 12?

Next we have to interact with August to see each of the days. Now this bit I
think Apple got right, as you don't want to have to listen to every entry for
every month, it is nice being able to skip over months and simply only
interacting with the month you require.

Ok, so I have now interacted with the month of August and I am still in year
view. and I move to 14, and VO tells me this is a Tuesday (great as we never
got this in the past) but it also tells me I am on 16 of 42. Why is the 16 of
42 relevant? . I have an event on the 14th August, but VO has not announced
anything about this when I move my VO cursor over the 14th (I am using the VO
keys plus arrows left and right to move the VO cursor). I would like VO to
say at least 1 event listed, press VO plus space to view the event. When I do
press VO + space (even though there was no hint to do so) I finally hear a pop
up which displays my event, and then I hit escape to make it go away. There is
no option within the pop up to then list the event in full or be able to edit
the event, these options would be useful.

Ok that is the year view, let's look at month view.

the first element is previous month and the next month is today (which should
say the current month, in my case is August), then we have the next month
button.. Next follows "August 2012 grid, 5 rows 7 columns" again, why do I need
to know the number of rows and columns? and why do I have to interact with the
grid? it should be visible by default. . After interacting, I land on 30 July
which is a Monday. and voiceover announces "1 event list", maybe it would be
better if VO said "1 event" to be consistent with iOS. This is good though, as
in month view you are informed you have an event listed when you move the VO
cursor over the day, as I mentioned earlier VO does not announce this when in
Year view. The next thing VO tells me after announcing the event, that I am on
1 of 35. Yet again, do I really need to know I am on 1 of 35?

I am now going to explore the week view. As usual we have the previous button
and in this case it

Re: Please explain disclosure triangles

2012-08-14 Thread Chris Blouch

If you are in the finder in list view each folder will read

FolderName Collapsed

or

FolderName Expanded

You can use plain old up/down to go up and down the tree and then right
left to expand/collapse the folder. Once expanded, up/down will include
all the child files/folders. If you are focused on a child and hit left
it will jump you back to the parent. If you are on the parent and hit
left again it will collapse. If you have a child folder expanded and you
collapse its parent, if you later re-expand the parent the child folder
will also still be expanded. In other words it puts things back the way
you left them. As you probably noticed, when you expand a folder it
tells you how many items were revealed (added) to the list.

Tree views are a great way to organize information so you can drill down
quickly to the stuff you care about and ignore the rest. Note that all
this arrowing around in trees is not specific to voiceover so anyone can
do the same keyboard navigation.

 1. You can read, but not write, the mac partition in windows. It works
the same in mac os: you can read the windows partition, but not write

>>> it.

 2. I use Carbonite, but my understanding is that you can't back up
both as they are different partitions. You could pay $99 per year to
back up your primary drive and a backup drive (your other partition)
but the basic, $59/year package allows only one drive to be backed up.
You can call carbonite (1-877-2225488) and check with them. As to
accessibility, the site works, and the client works well enough on
Windows (you may need the jaws cursor though). I don't know about the
mac client as I have not yet tried it.

Freedom Scientific gets quite irritated when they have to reset keys

 2. Although Windows and MS office work pretty well in the VM, Open

There is no comparison, Boot Camp performs much much better.
 Here are my questions.
 1. Will I have any problems reading from or writing to files on the
 MAC partition?
 2. Do any of you use Carbonite to back up both your boot camp and Mac
partitions? Is the web site for Carbonite accessible?
I will continue to use the MAC for ITunes. I also want to keep up with
accessibility improvements in the IWork suite.

 Hi Harry,

I'll paste in here my instructions I posted in a different thread with the
steps you can use to get rid of the Preview Pane in Mountain Lion Mail.

 HTH.

 Later...

A few queries related to programming: vim, configuration files, etc

2012-08-14 Thread Venkatesh Potluri
Hello listers. I have a few questions related to programming on the
mac. I frequently code in C, C++, Python and Java, and I often come
across situations where I have to edit configuration files for a few
applications, etc.
1. what is the best editor or IDE?
I have tried using vim from the terminal but, I face a difficulty in
navigating around the text and editing it. VO reads some text, when I
take the curser to the place I want to edit and Hit the delete key,
text from else where gets deleted. Am I doing something wrong?
Is there any way to use xCode to open a blank file, code in the
language I prefer(at least C ), and run the code? I guess doing this
would help me use the auto complete features of xCode.
2. how do I edit configuration files using text edit or some other GUI editor?
sinse vim was not of any help to me, I tried to edit configuration
files in textedit using the open command from the terminal. but, in
come cases, after editing, I get an error while saving saying " you
don't own this file ". I am in the " sudo su " mode, stil I get this
error.
I request you to give your valuable suggestions or workarounds at the
earliest as I am unable to do my course assignments and loosing
grades.
Thank you in advance.
Cheers
Venkatesh Potluri

Calendar Appointments on the Mac

2012-08-14 Thread Steve Holmes
I have a question about the list of appointments possible in Calendar. On IOS
devices, you can see a full list view of all appointments, past and present in
a single view. I was thinking since Mountain Lion's approach in many apps is
more closely similar to their IOS counterparts,, that list could be shown on
the Mac as well. Alas, I haven't been able to do that. Is a single list of
all events even possible on the Mac? I can get a list within a specific period
of time like week or month view but I would like to see the list like I can on
my iPod.

Any ideas?

To rename your Mac, open System Preferences and click on "Sharing". If you then

Re: A way to renable the backspace key to go back a page in Safari

2012-08-14 Thread Steve Holmes
I have fairly limited experience with all of Safari but I have always used the
Commend-arrow keys to go back but I use tabs as much as possible. I believe
Safari under Mountain Lion does more with tabs instead of opening new windows.
I usually go back by pressing Command-w to close tab or window and that usually
works for me. Maybe I'm missing something too.

Renaming my Mac

2012-08-14 Thread Garth Humphreys
Hi

I know this might be a strange question but how would I go about renaming my
Mac. It's current default name is Garth's Mac Book Air but I would like to
change this

iPhoto and email

2012-08-14 Thread Garth Humphreys
Hi

I just tried to send a photo by using the action menu and email from within
iPhoto. I got errors that the server wouldn't respond. I was then able to copy
the photo and paste it into a email created from within Mail and send normally.
I then repeated the same steps again with the same results. That is the email
created in iPhoto would not send but the email created in Mail would. I had the
same pop up button on the email created in iPhoto as I do in mail which allows
the choice of sending account. I tried to send from multiple accounts in iPhoto
with the same result.

Anyone know why there would be a difference?

Re: multiple messages from macvisionaries group

2012-08-14 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Dear Ioana,

Yes, I have a rule set up on my mac in mail preferences that moves messages
from macvisionaries to a mailbox I have created. I have not got any rules in
Google itself - I did not know it was possible.. And I have turned off all the
labels.

Thanks for trying to help. I will double check the labels in Google in case I
missed something.

 Hello Everyone,

I've already asked before about the problem of receiving multiple copies
of messages from macvisionaries group. Harry has offered me suggestions to
do with labels in gmail (which is the mail provider for me) but they
haven't sold the problem. I vaguely seem to remember that I had the same
issue under Lion but I can't remember how I had solved it then. I seem to
receive two copies of each message in my inbox. Please help if you have
 any ideas.

 With best wishes and thanks

 Andrew
