Re: Deactivating my MBP's Track Pad

2015-01-07 Thread Grant Hardy
Another thing you could try is enabling Mouse Keys in accessibility
preferences, available from the System Preferences app. This normally allows
the mouse to be controllable using keyboard keys. There is an option to ignore
the built-in trackpad when you’ve enabled Mouse Keys.

Best,

Grant

Not here. At my end I only see contacts and calendar in the applications table
for my Facebook account. I guess then the below isn't true at all for Facebook.
Anyway, I use Skype for all my instant messaging needs. I have linked it to
both Facebook and Microsoft so can chat to all my friends in one client.

Re: iTunes Match: do you keep matched tracks after your Match ends?

2015-01-07 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Matched are considered different than Purchased to iTunes, so those Matched
items you’ve downloaded to the local machine will remain yours to use and only
Purchased media will be available from the Cloud if you discontinue.

When in the Music app, on the main page, double-tap the More button, then
double-tap the Edit button. Drag the items you want in the tabs along the

Re: The switch from Microsoft to Apple

2015-01-07 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
OS X is decidedly the technically superior OS, but alas, I am back to running
with the herd now, despite the inconveniences and compromises that you
naturally get in exchange for the over-promised and under-delivered features
and customisation in Windows, and contrary to the bizarre idea that a platform
is simply better because you can do more with it. OS X is simply a more
enjoyable, seamless and satisfying environment than Windows will ever be, and
is built on a rock-solid foundation that you can exploit to full potential if
you desire. Unfortunately, the pleasures of OS X will be no more for me at the
point where Apple stops supporting Mountain Lion, assuming no further
developments of technical merit, innovation of the screen reader, or concern
for the advanced user. My MacBook now runs Windows 7 exclusively, as that's
simply the better choice across the board now for me, and I only run OS X
Mountain Lion on this iMac 2011 because I can do so and still get the best
value from it and many OS X apps. I also, no doubt about it, relish in what I
consider to be one of Apple's finer releases, after a fairly shaky start, and
will miss it terribly when finally I have to abandon it. All my other needs
are taken care of by Linux, running in virtual machines; I've even converted my
home Mac Mini server into a Linux box. And I now have a ChromeBook, to
experiment with the future of cloudy clients.

Having said all that, please choose your platforms objectively and don't simply
run one platform or another in order to conform, because you just lose out in
the end if you restrict yourself. There are lots of people I hear of who are
on Windows XP running on metal, who absolutely should be using OS X, because
they will never go to Win7 to save themselves. I'll gladly get them using OS
X, and they get to keep their classic Start menu and working apps, especially
gaming and Office, in a XP VM. Otherwise, virtualisation is a thing, so use it
to give yourself access to even more apps on the same machine when it's
convenient, in Windows or, if you're feeling plucky, Linux. Such a pity OS X
cannot be virtualised, outside of OS X itself, without going down shady routes.

JMO, of course.

Ipod Nano Syncing question

2015-01-07 Thread Sarai Bucciarelli
Hi:
I have an iPod 6th gen Nano and iTunes 12. I’m trying to figure out how to sync
specific songs from one album.
I have chosen iPod nano, and the music playlist. I move back to the left and
interact with the scroll area. I see the tables for albums, artust, genre. I
can interact with the table, arrow down and press space to select then sync;
however I cannot figure out how to only select specific songs in an album to
transfer?
Another question, is it just me, or is first letter navigation not working in
those tables? IE if I wanted to transfer Enya artist, I cannot press e. I have
to down arrow.
Thanks!

DVD Player

2015-01-07 Thread The Believer
   Installed Mac DVD Ripper which is working nicely. But even tho I set
DVD Player (Mavericks) to not open when a disc is inserted, it still
pops up and says initialization error. Once I press the Ok button, the
ripper gets to work.

   I see no other preferences for DVD Player so am sure I did not miss
anything. Is there something else I need to set?

Re: Yosemite and a Dead Finder / Partitian an Active Drive

2015-01-07 Thread Jeff Berwick
Thanks Tim,

I was in a bit of a panic yesterday and I expected the Apple genius to say
exactly what you just did. However, he didn't and I took a chance on
partitioning my drive and reinstalling on the new partition. The process
worked flawlessly and I migrated all my info and apps over. When I woke up
this morning, I was back in business.

Thanks for the info though, I'll be better prepared and more willing to take
the risk next time. Wish those geniuses would say more than - I don't know
what is wrong, it could be software or hardware and we need to keep your laptop
for three days and charge you $100 to backup your data...Looks like they just
want the money and not necessarily to help.

Thx,
Jeff

Re: iTunes Match: do you keep matched tracks after your Match ends?

2015-01-07 Thread John Panarese
   iTunes match will basically copy everything you have in your iTunes library
that is available in the iTunes store. If you have tracks that are not
available in the iTunes store, it will upload a copy to your iCloud library.

   Once you have Match, you can choose to download better versions of the
tracks that ou have in your library. You keep those even if you choose to
cancel the service.

iTunes Match: do you keep matched tracks after your Match ends?

2015-01-07 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
Quick question. If I got iTunes Match, it will upload all music I have that
iTunes doesn't, and "match" music it does have, essentially considering the
matched songs purchased. If I discontinue Match after the first year, would I
keep the matched music? That is, after I stop using Match, will that music
still be considered purchased in my account? Thanks.

Re: remapping the capslock for linux

2015-01-07 Thread Chris Moore
Hi Deedra,
The purpose of these two programs is to remap the caps lock to an insert key in
your vm. As I recall, the correct code is 110 (not 50). Of course, you need
to disable the caps lock behavior in mac keyboard preferences. You also don’t
need to do any key mappings in vmware preferences.
The whole point of remapping capslock is to give you an insert key to use in
windows screen readers like nvda and jaws. This insert key is also recognized
by orce in linux but sadly not by speakup. However, Karabiner gives you a
numpad which speakup does in fact recognize.

I wish there were better documentation on all of this, but I think you’re
almost there!

Hi,

Was there a checkbox that said “Sync Audio Books”? Did you check it if it was
there? Was there an item where you could choose between syncing all books or

Re: messages app revisited

2015-01-07 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Setting up FaceBook Chat on the Mac is easily done when you use the Internet
Accounts Preference pane in System Preferences. All you really need is your
FaceBook login and password, the rest is done by the setup app. I believe that
it is automatically set up as a Jabber protocol client so I’d guess that it
needs to be. Regarding Windows Live, I’m fairly sure that this needs to be
done using the Skype app with Messenger built-in. Live Mail is configurable in
Apple Mail but I don’t believe that the Messenger can work this way. You could
certainly give it a try yourself when in the Internet Accounts pane of System
Preferences, choosing Other and choosing a messaging account.

HTH.

Braille translation settings on iOS devices?

2015-01-07 Thread Chenelle Hancock
Hello everyone,
This is Chenelle, I wanted to know when you're using a refreshable braille
display on I was device such as: iPhone, iPod touch, iPad mini or iPad?
Can you download bro translation programs for other languages suchS French,
Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Arabic or Russian? Reason for my asking for this
question is because, I am learning Russian and I want to learn Russian braille
so I can read or write Russian. There are no resources in the US for which I
can access the Russian Cyrillic alphabet. I do not own and A Windows computer.
I only have a Mac. Mike took Sperry program with my Romeo embosser will not
work with my Mac. Furthermore, the only way I would be able to access materials
and Russian Brio is to write to the library for the blind in Moscow Russia.
However, I don't know enough Russian in order to write them in their own
language. Is there anyone out there thatlives outside of the US that could help
me with this problem?
Thank you so much for your time I most greatly appreciate it.
Sincerely, Chenelle

messages app revisited

2015-01-07 Thread Faisal ali
Hi,
I’ve got Facebook chat set up on my messages app under jabber. Is it possible
to set it up by forgoing jabber? the set up process was pretty complicated as I
recall and not exactly the most straight forward thing on the mac. also, I
understand that Adium can handle window live messenger but I’m wondering if
this could also be set up in messages? And finally, is it possible to have
notifications set up when new contacts go online?
I want to use this app more regularly and cut out other apps like Adium.
Thanks

Re: Audio Book Builder transferring books

2015-01-07 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

You can also customize this so that Audio Books is one of the tabs along the
bottom so that you don’t need to use more. It all depends on which of those
items you use the most. Since I often listen to Audio Books on my phone, I’ve
put it along the bottom for my iPhone.

Re: iTunes 12 and downloads in iTunes match.

2015-01-07 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

You must first delete the copy of the mp3 on your local machine. Then, as long
as you didn’t tell iTunes to remove it from the Cloud, it will be available for
download the same as in previous versions of iTunes. Also, you must have the
“Show iTunes in the Cloud Purchases” box checked in the iTunes Preferences
under the Store pane.

Best.

Hi all.
I’m a subscriber of an iTunes match account. Before I was able to replace my
old mp3 file with a copy of them downloaded from the could, which is at 256

Now, on the iTunes 12 last release, the download option is no longer available

How Can I do?

Re: how to add events from emails into calendar

2015-01-07 Thread Andrew Lamanche
I wonder whether it is necessary to interact with the text first in order to
carry out the vo+space command as Tim says. The interacting with the text of
the body of the message is necessary to activate links in a message so I feel
that maybe that's what needs to happen.

Re: can't add Google account to messenbger

2015-01-07 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi Donna,

Instead of doing this in Messages, do the following:

• Go to System Preferences.
• Click on Internet Accounts.
• From the Internet Accounts table, select your Google account.
• Stop interacting with the Internet Accounts table and navigate right to the
Applications table.
• Interact with this table.
• Navigate down and check the box for Messages.

Normally that does it. After that change is applied, GoogleTalk with your
Google account should be one of the accounts within Messages.

HTH.

Re: how to add events from emails into calendar

2015-01-07 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

OK, things appear to be a little different when it is an “Event Detected” kind
of thing. After a bit of investigation, here’s how we’d accomplish this with
VO:

• highlight/select the text related to the event. VO should still announce
“Event Detected” when reading the highlighted text.
• Press VO-shift-m to bring up the Contextual menu.
• Choose QuickLook Event from this menu.

>From this QuickLook window, you can edit the necessary fields related to the
>event and also directly add the event to Calendar by pressing the Add to
>Calendar button.

HTH.

Re: remapping the capslock for linux

2015-01-07 Thread deedra waters
Ok so seil and karabiner are installed. I changed the capslock keycode to 50
since i want it to be the accent key. I have the capslock mapped to the accent
key in the vm. I’m running in circles here people, I have no way still to get
the capslock to pass to the vm wtf is going on here? you guys say this is
doable but right now i see no way to get it to pass to the vm as a capslock key
and i “have” to get this thing working, suggestions please?

Again, i changed the capslock to 50 in seil, then mapped the accent key back to
the capslock key in carabiner though this seems a bit screwed up in the mapping
department. Then i went to vmware and mapped the accent to the capslock but
it’s still not passing through. So what the heck am i doing wrong. Is this even
doable or do i need to toss the apple keyboard in favor of a windows one. If i
have to do that I’m going to be extremely upset.

Re: Audio Book Builder transferring books

2015-01-07 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

You are selecting the incorrect Audio Books item. When your iPhone is
selected, navigate right once past the Scroll area to the Playlists table.
Interact with it and move down to select Audio Books there then stop
interacting with the table. Navigate left to the Scroll area and interact with
it and it should read info about your Audio Book syncing settings. Make sure
that it is set to sync Audio Books and if you wish to simply transfer a
specific Audio Book or books to your iPhone, check the box for Syncing Only
selected Audio Books and check the books you wish synced from within the
corresponding table.

HTH.

Re: Braille and Spanish

2015-01-07 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello,

You can switch activities at any time. VO-x brings up the Activities menu. I
have an activity with low verbosity and lots of other things turned off which
is used automatically for Mail, but sometimes I switch to it in Safari because
what I’m reading is too cluttered with links and such. The beauty of activities
when switching languages is that it can change both Braille and the voice at
the same time.

Cheers,

Anne

I have manually manage content checked.
I connect the cable to my Mac, and iPhone. I open iTunes. I navigate past the
music radio button, and go to the more pop up. I choose audio books, and press
vo space. I vo right arrow over to the my audio books and make sure it says
selected. I vo right arrow again until I hear book grid no selection. I
interact wit the grid and hear my audio book title: it says 1 of 1. There is no
check box here. I make sure VO says selected though. I vo right arrow past the
iPhone pop up button until I hear scroll area. I interact with that scroll
area. I go to the end, stop interacting, go across until I hear the sync

using Google chat?

2015-01-07 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi all,

Does anyone have any tips using google Chat? I'm able to type text into the
message field once I locate the message, but once I get the Ping that someone
has messaged me, I have a hard time finding the message. I'm currently
chatting within Gmail on Safari, if there is an easier way to do this I'd love
to know.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions,
Donna

Re: Yosemite and a Dead Finder / Partitian an Active Drive

2015-01-07 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Does your Mac start up from the Recovery Partition? If so, things should work
out OK, otherwise, you may have bigger problems. A couple things to note.
Re-installing over the existing MacOS will 99 times out of 100 just do exactly
that. You will not lose a thing, it will just install the OS components, and
you’re good to go. If you do wish to partition your disk, you can also do this
from the Disk Utility app within the Recovery Partition. You will need to
select the drive itself when in Disk Utility, not the volume name. Then select
the Partition tab and enter the size you wish to make your original partition.
For example, on your 2 TB drive, you can say you wish the current partition to
be 1000 GB or 1 TB and apply your changes. This will leave the rest of your HD
unallocated. Click the Add Partition button and apply your changes and a new
partition will be created using the full unallocated space and your original
partition will be untouched.

HTH.

Hi,

For Contacts, stop Interacting with the Scroll area where you were editing the
contact info, then navigate right to find the “Done” button. Alternatively,

Re: how to add events from emails into calendar

Hi,

Normally, if you just VO-space on the event, it will open Calendar and it will
be added from there. Occasionally though, .ICS attachments from Outlook give
sync errors thus a little unreliable.

Printing Envelopes from Contacts

2015-01-07 Thread Phil Halton
Anne,
I just followed your very detailed and concise directions for printing
envelopes from the Contacts app and am very pleased with the results. It would
have been a real tough one to figure out without your directions. I’ve put them
into a message with a better subject line for archival purposes.
Thanks again.

Envelope printing directions are below:

 Hello Phil,

The step-by-step instructions are below my signature. For printing labels,
select Labels instead of Envelopes in the Style popup menu.

Cheers,

Anne

Use Contacts to address envelopes.
Put required cards into a special group for the current task.

• Put the selected card or cards into a new group;
• Press Command-P to bring up the Print dialogue;
• Navigate to the last visible item (VO-End) then go left twice. If you find
Show Details button, click it;
• Go to the first visible item (VO-Home) and navigate down to Style;
• Go right to the pop up button;
• Pop it and select "Envelopes" if it is not already saying "Envelopes";
• Navigate right to Layout and select it;
• Navigate right past the other two tabs and click the button to the right of
where it says "layout" again;
• Navigate down the menu, past Save as, delete and so on, until you find either
International envelopes or North American Envelopes submenu;
• Select the appropriate envelope type;
• Navigate right to see the exact dimensions of the envelope, the position and
size of the recipient's address panel (how far from top, how far from left and
how big);
• Continue to navigate right, past the field telling you the number of
addresses selected and the zoom slider and you'll find the position and size of
the Sender address panel;
• Use the Item Chooser menu to locate the Label tab and select it;
• Navigate right to the checkbox "Print my address", clear this checkbox if you
don't want your address to appear on the envelope;
• Navigate right to the address category pop up button and select the one you
want to send from (Home, Work, etc.);
• Navigate right to the Addresses pop up button where you select the category
of address for the recipient(s);
• To the right again, you select the print order (alphabetical or Postal Code);
• Continuing right, you can select to print your company name, the recipient's
company name, both or neither;
• To the right again, the same thing for country as for company;
• To the right again, you select font colour (default black);
• Now use the Item Chooser menu to select the Orientation tab;
• The first checkbox to the right shows the printing to be perpendicular to the
feed direction of the envelope, and the second checkbox shows it to be parallel;
• You can now print your envelope.

Fortunately, Contacts remembers the settings for next time!

Re: Pages questions.

2015-01-07 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Sean,

As in any other text on the Mac, VO-t will give you the text attributes such as
font, font size, font colour, text alignment and whether it’s bold or italic.

If you set a hotspot on the paragraph styles button, you can find out the
current paragraph style without leaving the text area.

Hotspots can be used to monitor other fields as well, such as the X and Y
coordinates of an element.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Audio Book Builder transferring books

2015-01-07 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Hi,

I also use Audiobook Builder and love it. In my case I have it set up in such
a way that once I press "create audiobook" button in the last stage of it being
created, the application will put it in its separate playlist in itunes called
Audiobook Builder. So see whether you can find a playlist called that. Then
if you want to have this book on your idevices, you need to sync them manually
and make sure that you sync the audiobook builder playlist.

Hi,

Yes, you can do it with any text without having to use any other application,
and I know many people on the list have been doing this. There's also an
application called GhostReader Plus from www.assistiveware.com that is
specifically designed to do this. It has other functions as well.
