VoiceOver in iOS 4.2 first impressions
Hi all, I've just updated my iPhone 3gs and played around with it a bit, so I thought I'd let you all know what I've found out so far. You can now disable the volume buttons if you like, which is actually very handy for us VO users. With them disabled, you can control VO's volume just by pressing them, rather than making it speak first. Nice. :) you can find this toggle in the sounds section of settings. As mentioned in the Maccessibility article, you can now add a rate setting to the rotor. The setting is located in Vo's settings, directly below the rate slider. we can now finally read the birthdays field in Contacts. VO now identifies headings in applications, by saying heading after the text. For example, the title of an app is a heading. personally I'd rather it didn't, or played a sound instead, but there you go.Also, after reading a review of an app, it'll say dimmed. VO now plays a quiet sound when something pops up, like if you're typing a name into the to: box and it finds a match from your contacts when you're sending a text, or if the keyboard appears. Finally, we can now access the dismiss app switcher button, which appears directly above the row of icons. There are a few more enhancements that Maccessibility have already mentioned, which I haven't tried yet, and they'll probably be more things that I haven't found yet. Hi. Jaws does actually have quite a few emoticons and abbreviations in the dictionary manager file for windows live messenger, so you could use that to find out what they are and add them to VO's pronunciation dictionary if you're so inclined. Adium problem
Hi all, for some reason,Adium has started acting strangely. More often than not, the vO cursor will get stuck in the message history window. This happens when I'm moving between messages, and it'll randomly stick on one and nothing I can do will move it. It's like it finds invisible window boarders I'm not accidentally interacting with the text of a message. I'm running the latest stable version of Adium under Mac OS 10.6.5 with the latest version of Safari and Webkit. Has anyone come across this problem and have any work arounds? Hi. I just want to add that since version 4, you can change voices without changing the international settings. In the voiceOver part of settings, scroll down to language rotor. Find each voice you want and double tap it. When you selected all the voices you'd like to use, close the settings app. They're now be a language option in the rotor. With that selected, flicking up and down will cycle through all the voices you've selected. trouble with loops in garageband 11
HI all. I got my copy of iLife 11 today and have just been playing around with garageband.. Apple have done a wonderful job improving accessibility and it's now a lot more intuitive to get around. VO telling you the bar and beet you're on as well is priceless. However I can't seem to get loops to be added where I want them to be, so I'll outline the steps I took in case I'm doing something wrong. I position the play head where I want a loop to be inserted using the arrow keys, e.g. bar 1 beet one.. I then find the loop I want in the browser, using cmd+shift+L to audition them (I believe this is a new shortcut key). Then I turn off cursor tracking, make sure the mouse pointer is also on the loop then do the mouse down command. I then locate the timeline, move the mouse to it then release the mouse button. The loop gets inserted but in a random place - the last time I tried it ended up at the beginning of bar 7. Does anyone know why it's doing this? Thanks in advance. Good idea, but you can't insert them that way unfortunately. It can only be done by drag and drop as far as I'm aware. Apple's event next wednesday
Hi all. As you might be aware, apple are holding a Back To The Mac event next Wednesday at 10 eastern in Cupertino, California. There are rumours of possible upgrades to the MacBook Air and also the unveiling of MAC OS X 10.7. So, what would you like to see included in next version of the OS, either generally or VoiceOver specific? Personally, I'd like to see a female voice that is as good as Alex, and to have voices in other languages even if it meant licensing them from nuance as they have done in iOS. Accessibility improvements to garage band would be welcome, as well as making iWeb accessible. The last major thing I can think of is to finally fix the issue of VO randomly resetting itself. I'm sure they'll come up with a load of things I haven't even thought of. So what do you all think? Hi all. Have any of you had any luck getting the last.fm scrobbler to work with VO, or are there any 3rd party applications that are more accessible? The iPhone app is completely accessible bar some unlabelled buttons, so it's a shame to find that the Mac version is completely unusable. Another bug in iOS 4.1
Hi all. Has anyone else noticed that when moving to the beginning or end of a text box, VO nolonger announces the location of the insertion point? It only happens when the box isn't empty. Also I've just noticed that navigating in text boxes seems to be broken.completely. I'm writing this on my iPhone using the screen. Hi all. Just to let you know that the Facebook app seems to be more stable with VO. Whether it's something they've fixed in iOS 4.1 or Facebook itself I don't know, bbut it hasn't crashed on me yet. New Nike + app
Hi all. Just to let you all know about this new version of Nike + that doesn't require a censor. Instead it uses the accelerometer and gps. It's £1.20 and is currently in the top 25 paid apps chart in the UK. I assume that its as accessible as the previous version. Hope this is of use to some of you. using Navigon
Hi all Has anyone successfully used Navigon to travel somewhere safely on foot? I've yet to try to walk a route using it myself, and since I have a 3gs, I wouldn't trust the battery in any case. I'd like to gage your responses before I attempt it and also wait til I have an iPhone 4. Did you find it gave you adequate instructions? Also, would the iPhone still be able to pick up GPS signals whilst in a pocket? I'm also a bit wary of using a bluetooth headset in case they block your hearing somewhat. This happened to me yesterday. Luckally I had backed up my settings a few months earlier as it was doing it quite often. But I had changed a few more things since then so I'll have to boot off my backup drive, export the settings off that and import on my original installation. Problem with 3 finger flick on trackpad
Hi all, has anyone else noticed that in some cases the 3 finger flick doesn't work? I've found this particularly in tables and in the playlist browser in iTunes. Is this a bug in VO or is there a reason why these elements can't be scrolled? I'm using the magic trackpad but this happens on MacBooks as well. Secondary clicking is Mac speak for right clicking, like to open up a contextual menu. Press down on the trackpad with 2 fingers til it clicks. I think it's maybe a problem with Gmail being slow as sometimes I have it when Mail crashes when I try to delete a load of messages at once. Hi Mary, if you do a search for trackpad in VO's help system, you'll find a list of standard gestures there. Thoughts on Magic Trackpad
Hi all. I took the plunge yesterday and bought the magic trackpad. i've only used Vo with multi-touch trackpads briefly before as I have an iMac. But because I use the iPhone I could see the benefits such an interface would bring to Mac OS. Having spent nearly two days with the trackpad, I personally thing that it is the best thing to happen in assistive technology recently. To be able to visualise how things are laid out on the screen is just amazing. It's larger size is also an advantage. It has really changed the way how I use my Mac and I won't be going back to using the numpad commander unless I have to. VO and spell checker bug in safari fixed.
Hi all, Just to let you all know that VO now brings up the menu of corrections for a misspelled word when you use VO+shift+m in edit boxes in Safari, after you use command+semicolon. This bug was fixed either in mac os X 10.6.4 or Safari 5. I asume this will also work if you have check spelling while typing enabled. Hope this is of benefit to some of you. using the numpad commander without a numpad
Hi all. I accidentally came across this a few minutes ago. if you press and hold any arrow key then press a key on the number roe, this will cause VO to trigger the function you assigned to that key on the numpad. For example if I press and hold the down arrow while hitting 1 on the number roe, VO will bring up the item chooser, which is assigned to number 1 in my setup.. Obviously it isn't a perfect solution for those who don't have a numpad as the cursor moves, but it probably could come in handy in some situations. Of course you can assign commands to the keyboard commander. but there you go, I thought I'd let you all know in case someone might find it useful. Hi all. Ever since I've owned a mac, I've noticed that when I enter text into a single line edit box on a web form e.g. a username or password field, the first character I type doesn't always get entered. To use a password field as an example, VO will click for each character, even though the first one hasn't registered. This happens with both Webkit and Safari. Also, there are times where vO doesn't make any sound when entering a password even though I haven't muted it's sounds. does anyone else have this problem and if so, is there a work around? Regarding moving apps around on the home screen, double tap an app, hold your finger down till VO says either moving on an app that came preinstalled on the phone, or delete on an app you've installed. While still keeping your finger on the screen, move it to where you'd like the app to be. You'll hear a beep when the app has moved to another location on the grid and VO will tell you the row and column number it is now in. If you move an app to either the far left or right of the screen, it will be on the next or previous home screen. It can be bit tricky, especially moving apps between screens. I've had the iPhone for about 3 months and I still can't do it right first time. further to locating radio streams in iTunes
Hi all. I'm subscribed to Mac OS X hints RSS feed and today they posted a great hint that is helpful for deleting radio streams you no longer listen to. I found that when I created a smart playlist of all the streams I imported I couldn't delete any of them from the library from there. Mac VO resetting itself
Hi all. If my iMac does this again, I will go mad. Over the last month or so, VoiceOver has reset nearly all its settings spontaneously and with out any warning. Everything bar my numpad commander customisations get reset to factory defaults. I make quite a lot of changes mainly in the verbosity section and it is a pain to have to keep setting things back to how I like it. I'm glad it leaves the numpad commander alone at least as I have mapped every ctrl layer key to do things. Are apple aware of this major bug and if so, what was their response? I completely forgot that you can save your settings to a file. thanks for reminding me and I've just done it. For those of you asking how it's done. open up VoiceOver Utility and choose export preferences from the file menu. A standard save box will pop open so tell it where you want to save the file and click save. Importing is the same, but choose Import Settings instead. The file should have a .voprefs extension.. spotify alternative
Hi all. For those of us in the UK at least, there is a free alternative to spotify called WE7. Like Spotify, it is a free legal way to stream music over the interweb. However, it is browser based, resulting in better accessibility. It's not perfect though. When you've found what you want to play, to actually get the song to play you'll have to simulate a mouse button click with VO shift space on the play button. This is usually the first cell of the table of songs. It'll either say play or empty cell depending on something or other. I've only started using it proper a few minutes ago, although I've heard of it for a while. It seems a lot better than spotify in many ways. You're not presented with an overwhelming list of every song an artist has done for a start and it apparently has a lot more options for discovering new music. however, it plays an annoying promotional stinger between songs unlike spotify which plays ads every 40 minutes or so. the Address is www.we7.com. It's well worth checking out. I will say though that since it's a browser based thing, there isn't keyboard shortcuts to turn down the volume independently. There maybe is a volume control in the player frame but I haven't found it yet. I hope this is of any use to some of you and good luck. Clean my Mac accessibility improving.
Hi all. just to let you know that in the latest version of Clean my Mac, most controls are now labeled. The table where you select each section such as logs and universal bynaries still says blank when you arrow through it. However the label of the next table changes to reflect the section that is selected. The select all and select none buttons now have labels also, so If they could label the items in that table, the app would be perfect. iPhone - using different voices with VoiceOve
Hi all. I was speaking to a friend last night whose friend also has an iPhone. Somehow, he uses VoiceOver with an English male voice instead of the default female voice. I searched briefly for text to speech on the iTunes store and found that Neospeech's Paul and Cate voices are available as rather hefty free downloads. Apparently, their new Julie voice is also available.I also found a translator that has an option of installing Loquendo's voices as paid extras. The onl suggestion I can give you is try pressing the left and right arrow keys together. Sounds to me as though you have turned on quick nav by accident which makes the arrow keys behave as though you are holdin down control and option. Accessible interactive fiction client
Hi all. just to let you know that there is a free accessible open source interactive client available for the Mac called Spatterlight. I have literally only spent 5 minutes testing it, but apparently it can play most formats, such as AGT, Adrift, TADS, Level 9 and Zcode games. It supports games with sound but not graphics.. Voiceover doesn't read new text automatically, however the text area is easily read with the VO cursor. The up and down arrow keys let you review your command history which is again not read out, but it is shown on the command line. There's not a lot in the way of options other than changing the back and foreground colours, font and size of your commands and the game's text which can be set independent of each other. One other neat touch it has is that it will worn you if you try to quit without saving. captcha problem
Hi all. Has anyone else noticed that on blogger, the audio captchas won't play when you click the link? I can't understand why this might be as they work whereever else they appear through google's products. These particular captchas play fine in windows and they sound the same as other google ones. Quicksilver
Hi all. I'm wondering has anyone else tried Quicksilver? I have a feeling that it has the potential to be a fantastic app for getting things done quicker. However it's not accessible with VO. For those who haven't heard of Quicksilver before, I'll try my best to explain what it does. It's hard, as it can do so much. It's a way of interfacing with the OS by typing in commands. It's not a command line environment as such as it doesn't seem to require you to learn complex commands. . It has 3 panes. The first is where you type in what you want to do, say move file. The second, you type the name of the file you want to move. The third is where you would give it the name of the destination folder. . It can do a lot more than moving files around. Here's a link to an overview of it from the developer's website. By the way, the interface is completely keyboard driven. You move between the 3 panes using the tab key, and the arrows are used to select the action you want. After everything is filled out, you hit enter to carry out your command. CleanMyMac is a utility that basically removes junk files and removes files left behind when you uninstall programs. It also reduces the size of universal binaries. I'm guessing the latter means it removes the non-intel code or something. As I'm new to the mac, I won't be experimenting with that particular feature as I've heard it can cause problems. It's not free and costs around 30 dollars. There are probably free or cheeper programs that do the same thing or similar, but this one seems to be the best, judging from the reviews I've read. It is almost fully accessible but for a few unlabelled controls. I hope this is of use to some of you. Hi Paul. I switched over to the mac about a month ago. It really is such a fantastic. platform. The only things that I use windows for now are Ventrillo and anything flash based that requires me to interact with it. I occasionally use Sonar, too. For me, e-mails from this list say Mac Visionaries in the subject field. I think this is true for most subscribers so it's probably an issue with your e-mail provider. You could try using the to: field as a filter criteria. That should work. After some 20 podcasts even without having the mac myself so far, I do believe I'm going to love it. The way Voice Over works, as it leaves what you want to read in your own hands, rather than deciding what is important on the screen. The new operating system, based on unix, and its smooth work flow. What excites me most of all is rather a lot. To mention a few: I think I'm going to love to be able to get out of trouble if my mac can't start from its internal drive. Booting from an external u s b drive from super duper is fabulous, as is the ability to have speech during o s installations or upgrades. Running xp as a task on the mac by using fusion, is another thing I'm looking forward to. Pro tools is something I will want to explore to the best of my ability, as that will expand my musical possibilities even further than they are for now. I'm a documentation lover, so I'll have more than enough to explore in the months to come. I heard a podcast on maccessibility.net about pro tools becoming accessible in April next year, and I'm very much looking forward to laying my hands on it. I hope it will be a smoother experience than I daily have in sonar for windows. With an open mind to all that is new, I'm hoping to be a part of this community soon. Regarding this list, here's a question. To make it possible for a message rule to sort all mail coming from this list into its own mail folder, is there any way for an email program to recognize mac visionaries messages? The mail I see from here, seems to come from the individual senders of the messages, rather than from one list server. Similarly, I can't think of a way to recognize mac visionary messages by tag in the subject field, because there is none. How do you folks deal with this? Interested to know. Help importing audiobooks into itunes.
Hi all. I use Audiobook Builder to convert audiobooks to the bookmarkable format. For the most part, it works great. However, if I convert something like a radio play where tracks are seamlessly joined together, it leaves little gaps between them. Has anyone got any other suggestions? Hi Anouk. this isn't possible at the moment as far as i know. I sent Apple an e-mail asking them if they could put in a sound output device selector. I haven't had a reply yet. So, What I suggest is the more people who e-mail them to request this feature, the more likely it will be implemented in future versions of the Os. mail problem
Hi all. last night, I've started having a strange issue with Mail. for some strange reason, messages intermittently come up as images and not text. When I hit return on a message, voice over will just say image and will behave as though it is an image I'm focused on. After restarting mail and the mac several times it seemed to have sorted itself out. But on checking my mail just, it started doing it again. It didn't take as long to rectify the problem but still it's bizarre . The message preview also apparently shows an image too when it happens. It seems to only happen with messages from this list, but I could be wrong. Anyone else experiencing this? Any suggestions appreciated. Anouk, To get system sounds through your headset, there's an output list on the sound effects tab. Select your headset there, as well as on the output tab. Answering calls on iphone
Hi All. i bought the iPhone yesterday. overall, I love it. I'm having problems answering calls though. for some reason, two finger double tapping the screen doesn't seem to work like it should and I have to flick to the answer button and douple tap that. two finger double tapping does end the call though. has anyone else noticed this, or am I missing something? Nuance really needs to sort out Sarina's pronunciation. She says loaked instead of locked, wighting instead of waiting and iport instead of iPod. lol. That's why the pronunciation is so bad sometimes, the voices on the iPhone are very economical. You could try the Australian voice to see if you like it better. Couple of safari questions
Hi all. I've noticed that on some webpages such as Wikipedia that vO speaks both the onscreen text and the title of the webpage when reading links. i realise you can turn off either of those settings but then you get some links that have only one of those attributes then you run into problems. Are Apple aware of this? Maybe they could implement so that VO searches for on-screen text and if that doesn't exist, it speaks the title? Is there a reason why VO doesn't remember where you were on a webpage when you go back a page? I've also noticed this happening sometimes when I hope a page in a new tab then ctrl tab back to the previous page or close down the new tab. Is this an issue that effects sighted users too? Although I think the web rotor is a wonderful feature, I'd prefer it if it didn't start from the top when you start using it, It would be better if it took into account where you are on the page and went from there. The item chooser is sometimes too slow to jump around a page but I find it more convenient than the rotor, depending on what I'm doing. I have mainly been using webkit, so this next one could well be a bug with that, but, more often than not, when I search for text using the VO find command, it interacts with whatever it has found. IS this because I have interact when I press the tab key turned on? Speaking of webkit, I have also encountered the bug where it says selected on every edit box I come across. Finally, VO has started to read the whole line when I delete the previous word with option backspace. I think it started after I upgraded to 10.6.2. Has anyone else noticed this? I've done it.
Hi all. Yes, I bought an imac last friday. So far, I love it. it's amazing how fast it is to get things done, and*most* things work fine. I have my phone sinced with iCal and address book, been doing a bit of web brouzing with safari, used front roe, gotten voice over saving my settings on a usb drive, all the usual stuff. I still need to add my music to iTunes though. most of the ID3 tags in my mp3s are messed up. some of them have both the artist and title duplicated in both the artist and title fields. I'll have to run them through mp3 tag studio on windows first as nearly all the file names are done as artist - title.mp3, so that should sort mmost things out. . But can itunes fill in all the other tags? one thing I can't get to work is e-mail. I've switched both my phone and pc to imap with no problems at all. but the mac doesn't want to know. the incoming server has an invalid certificate and it can't connect to the smtp server. it's really frustrating. I have e-mailed the tech support guys so they should hopefully have an answer. I still keep forgetting how the cursor works. I understand what's happening, I just keep reverting to windows habbits. I'll get it eventually. then I'll be expecting windows to behave like the mac. While editing text on a webpage, say in a reply on a message board, the home and end keys don't seem to do what they're supposed to do. also, if I do vo shift m to bring up the menu of misspelled words, it clicks on the wrong word. do I have to move the vo cursor onto the word I want to change? I was just using the arrow keys before. is there a command to read the current time rather than hopping over to the status menus? I know it's possible. To whoever it was who uses XMarks on the mac, did you try it on snow leopard? I downloaded the snow leopard package, ran it and it says that it requires leopard. I'm running 10.6.1. I'll also need to get it to write to ntfs drives, say if I want to copy some music I bought in itunes over to my windows machine,. I'm planning on buying superdooper or whatever it's called. that sounds like a fantastic backup solution. Finally, has anyone had any luck using the dashboard? Hi all. I have decided to take the plunge and get a mac either this or next week and have a few questions. I use firefox on windows, and have amassed a good number of bookmarks over the years. Recently I've started using an extension called xmarks, which basically syncs your bookmarks and now saved passwords with an online server. This allows you to recover them when you do a fresh install or whatever. The reason I'm mentioning this is that they have released a Version that is compatible with safari under sl. Has anyone used Xmarks on the mac and is it accessible at all? I want to make the switching over process as painless as possible and would hate to re-add all my bookmarks and things manually. There's also a version for IE by the way. Secondly, for those of you living in Europe, how accessible is spotify on the mac? I imagine because of how VO works that it would be far more usable than it is under windows with jfw. Finally, I just want to say that I absolutely love the item chooser. I haven't had much chance to use SL and the web rotor but it's amazing how quick it is to jump around webpages just using the item chooser. It's one of those things that you'd think that should have been around in windows screen readers for years. Now to put this into perspective, let me give you some idea of what my usage pattern is like. I typically turn the phone on around 3:30 in the morning, listen to a podcast perhaps or some other audio, for about an hour or perhaps a little less, then I put the phone in my pocket and pretty much other than a couple of calls during the day, I don't use it again until about 3:50 in the afternoon when I get on the bus. The other day I noticed that after nearly 12 hours, I was at about 90 to 94% battery life. So, keep in mind the iPhone is a pretty data intensive device and has a fair amount of horsepower and so will consume more battery than perhaps something like a Motorola Q9. I do believe VOiceOver could perhaps be tweaked to eat a little less battery, but I'm not completely sure. I do know that any screen reading application on a phone, which also uses a software TTS engine is going to impact the battery life of the phone. I also submit that turning off 3G did not seem to have a significant impact on data speeds. Yes it did affect them, but I could stream audio quite well and sure pages may have loaded a bit more slowly, but I did pull an app down from the app store in a reasonable amount of time. New To The List
Hi all. I'm sereously considering switching over to the mac and also will be getting an iPhone when it becomes available on my network. I've been following Apple's progress with voice-over since the beta of Tiger. Apple are an amazing company for putting all this effort into making their products so accessible. admittedly I believe the prices are a bit steep, but you certainly get what you pay for I think. I'll be getting an iMac as I'll want to use a better soundcard for music production. I will also run windows on it so I can use sonar, or I will just use my existing windows machine for audio work. I haven't decided yet, although having everything on one machine will mean less clutter. I love the wireless keyboard, but I wish it had a number pad, so I'll order the wired one instead. Also, having to use the fn key plus the arrow keys to act as the six pack would frustrate me. I have a couple of questions. I had the chance to try the new macbook with the multi-touch trackpad over the weekend and was very impressed. After having getting used to it, I was able to read webpages in safari fairly well using the flick method. does any of you know if that technology will find it's way onto the iMac either through use of a touchscreen or by a trackpad integrated into the keyboard? Secondly, how accessible is garage band or logic with voice-over? Or am I best sticking with sonar for the time being?
