MI Project Requirements
Hello all, I'm hoping someone might be able to help me out with this: I'm working on a web-based mapping project using .html maps created with MI 6.0, and corresponding .mdb files for the MI .tabs used. For the end product, we would like to have a form created on the website where clients could update their information, submit the form and update the .mdb. ( we would also like to have the maps automatically updated, but I'm assuming this would require MapXtreme?). Essentially we would like an end user having only Proviewer, to be able to download the saved .wor files for each .html map( as well as view the .html version), download the database itself( in .mdb format), and update their information/submit it to a webmaster from a Form( compatible with MSACCESS). Could someone provide a basic heads up on the software requirements, processes etc. that would be required ? We are currently working with MSACCESS, NetScape Composer, and MapInfo 6.0. Thanks to all who responded to my problem in importing a .gif into MI. I've got the output required!! -Original Message- From: Waardenburg, Dennis [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, May 23, 2000 1:58 PM To: Swayze, Natalie: WPG Subject: image registration Natalie, Is your goal to display the GIF as a background under some other files, or do you want to digitize relevant features from the GIF into a new layer? If you want to show the image in the background of a map, just register it (using the instructions below) and open the other layers into the same map window. If you want to digitize features from it, register it, display it in its own map window, then create a new table in the same map window and trace the features you want onto the new layer. From the MI help files: What Does It Mean To Register A Raster Image? When you register a raster map image, you enter map coordinates (e.g. longitude/latitude degrees), and you indicate which locations on the raster image correspond to those coordinates. You must register each raster image before displaying the image in MapInfo, so that MapInfo can perform geographic calculations, such as distance and area calculations, when displaying the raster map. The first time you open a raster image file within MapInfo, MapInfo displays the Register Raster Image dialog. By completing this dialog, you tell MapInfo how to register the raster image. MapInfo stores the raster image's registration information in a table file for future re-use. The next time you run MapInfo, you can re-open the raster table without repeating the registration process. Thus, you only need to register each raster image once. If you have not yet displayed your raster image in MapInfo, perform the following steps to register the image: 1. Choose File Open Table. the Open Table dialog displays. 2. Choose Raster Images from the File Format drop-down list. MapInfo displays a list of raster image files. 3. Choose the raster image file you want to open, and choose Open. MapInfo displays the Image Registration dialog. A preview of the raster image appears in the lower half of the dialog. 4. Specify the image's map projection by choosing the Projection button and completing the Choose Projection dialog. If you created the raster image by scanning a paper map, the paper map may contain information about the map projection used. If you cannot determine the map's projection, use the default map projection (longitude/latitude). Choose OK. 5. Move the mouse cursor over the image preview in the lower half of the dialog, to a spot where you know the map coordinates (e.g. longitude/latitude), and click the mouse button. MapInfo displays the Add Control Point dialog. 6. Complete the Add Control Point dialog by entering the map coordinates that correspond to the location where you clicked on the map image. Choose OK. Remember that any location west of the Prime Meridian has a negative longitude, and any location south of the Equator has a negative latitude. Thus, 73 degrees West corresponds to the X value -73. If you are entering coordinates in degrees, you must enter decimal degrees as opposed to degrees/minutes/seconds. 7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 until you have entered at least three control points. To ensure accurate results, enter five or six control points. Each control point that you add helps MapInfo associate earth coordinates with locations on the raster image. Ideally, you should have at least one control point at or near each corner of the image. The number of control points needed depends on the nature of your raster image. If you are not able to determine your map's projection, or if you are working with an image that does not have an actual map projection, such as an aerial photograph, you may want to enter twenty or more control points. 8. Choose OK when you are done adding control points. MapInfo displays the raster image in a Map window. When you complete the Image Registration dialog, MapInfo saves the registration information in a table (.tab) file. In later MapInfo sessions, you can re-open the table by choosing File Open Table, without repeating the registration process, and without having to choose Raster Images as the File Type in the Open Table dialog. Since the province use the software Caris (which was designed for hydro application and not Environnmental studies, that you can be sure off!) I transfer all files in Mapinfo. We can easily concatenate them as we need. It's also very practical for the dispay parameter when you zoom in an out. So, We have all wet land, power lines tower, Sensitive area, slopes, etc. All we have to do is create a buffer of the necessery size on the feature according to the bylaw. When someone come to for a permit. We see exactly his property and if there a zone where someone is not suppose to be in. Attn Peter Doyle: MI Workspace regression utility
I'd definitely like to try it out! Natalie Swayze Spectrum, IC WPG -- From: Doyle, Peter W To: 'Mapinfo-L' Subject: MI Workspace regression utility Date: Tuesday, February 15, 2000 1:12AM Greetings, Recently I have noticed there are a number of people inquiring about how to open a Workspace that was created by a later version of MapInfo. As most of us are probably aware, the process is relatively simple yet time consuming. Eg. use a text editor to edit the header of the workspace, and then try to eliminate those lines that are not supported be earlier versions. (can be frustrating at times). As I have a need to do this quite often, I decided to automate the process by writing a simple MapBasic utility. I have taken a very simplistic approach - 1) Read in the workspace 2) Change the header 3) Disregard all lines except for the table information 4) Save out to new workspace You are left with a stripped down workspace that should load into any MapInfo version, although you have now lost any formatting, layouts etc. If you think this may suite your needs, or you just want to check it out, Email me directly and I will forward it to you. Someone may even like to build on the idea? If there is enough interest I will upload it to the Mapinfo-L site Regards Peter Doyle TELSTRA OnAir Networks Queensland Geographical Information Systems Mapping ' +61 7 34064304 Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- To unsubscribe from this list, send e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and put "unsubscribe MAPINFO-L" in the message body, or contact [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- To unsubscribe from this list, send e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and put "unsubscribe MAPINFO-L" in the message body, or contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I use MI and Vertical Mapper. Vertical Mapper uses is quite flexible with grid (grd grc) files. All that is needed is to be able to convert a raster image to a .grd file in one of the formats that is recognizable with either or both MI and VM. This appears to be a real chore. At least, I haven't seen any 'successful' results or discussions about it. All of my inqueries have left me feeling like I'm the only one in the world who doesn't know how to convert an image into an ascii array of values that are related to image colors. Then that file could be modified with the appropriate header and be importable via Vertical Mapper and wa la you have a grid file that you can do something with. I have been dinking around, off and on, breaks for Army Navy Gators and Bama, and haven't solved it yet. Damians edge detector idea would be great, but what about drawing the regions after the image w/edges detected is georeference. Then you gotta create a new map and trace over the regions. I takes enough time that the quest for the better way is the only way. Does someone have the VM help desk#? -- From: MD Currie To: Swayze, Natalie: #PNWT - PTNO Subject: Re: MI Problem with VMapper Date: Saturday, October 23, 1999 6:56PM Hi there vm user We use vm since the 1.0 days. it has been working well for us. your issues seem to relate to your cpu and its memory. I will give you some tips on how we cheat with Windows to avoid memory dumping. Large files require alot of memory for processing. At least twice again more virtual memory than the file you process. This memory comes from your hard drive. If your hard drive is nearly full you might try making more memory availble for windows to use. Try 1 gegabyte free memory. Run Scan disk and Defrag the hard drive. Increase Ram Memory some programs are Ram memory intensive and will require alot of memory to keep operating. We have aleast 128 megs of ram on all of our processing CPU's The more the better. Disable window mangement of Virtual Memeory. The last tip is for the risk taking in you. for some programs we extend the processing limits of our desktops. To cheat we disable the Virtual Memory and give the computer all but say 200 megs of the hard drive where the data is on. make sure to restore the memory control back to windows later when you want the cpu to work normal for the rest of your processing. These three functions often allow us to process 1- 3gigbytes data sets using NT and Windows 95. MI default units
Is there a way to permanently set and save the distance units that MI uses so it doesn't have to be changed in the options menu each time the program is opened? MI saving workspaces
Hello all, Does anyone know whether or not it is possible to save workspaces onto a cd, so that they can be reopened from a different pc( i.e. one that does not have the original .tab files in the directory which they were made in)? I have a series of map layers( 8 .tab files), which I've created on my hard drive and created workspaces for which include all of these layers. But, when saved onto the cds, MI recalls where the tables were originally located and asks to locate each one individually... Can this be avoided by saving the individual files to the cd first, and then reopening them off the cds and making the workspace? Can the problem be adjusted by opening the .wor file in a text viewer and changing the directories that MI searches for the tables? RE: MI In search of Super Workspace registration and author name!
Does anyone know how to create/obtain .FLY files?( used in one of the programs at this site-3D flythru). -- From: Michael Scott McGinn To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: MI In search of Super Workspace registration and author name! Date: Wednesday, November 17, 1999 2:29PM I need help. I need to find the author of Super Workspace. Here is the web site I got it from. http://users.iafrica.com/s/st/stingray/GIS1.htm The program WORKS very well for compressing MI workspaces into a zip like file that can be moved to other machines running MI and opened again and viewed. The demo is free and works well and intigrates with MI very tightly. I have been trying to get a registration code so I can upgrade to the full version but no one has sent me back anything.
