MD: Rugged portable player needed

2000-08-25 Thread Alexander Dietrich

Hi,

in your experience, what are the most rugged portable players
currently available ? I'm asking this on behalf of a friend
who wants to use it while practising BMX bike stunts (which
is a stupid idea if you ask me, but hey, it's his player...)
His last one was an AIWA portable recorder (F-65 I think) which
dropped and got its lid dented, recently the drive mechanism
died, according to him.
So what I'm looking for is a player whose mechanic parts, short
of being jumped on, can stand a whole lot of shaking. It would
be even better it it isn't on the upper end of the price scale.
Please answer, you can help keep a person from buying an MP3
player !!

Usually there is no way get real trackmarks out of a soundcard,

It might be possible that XMMS has a bug in the pause-between-songs

MD: MD Advertising: Sharp

2000-02-20 Thread Alexander Dietrich

Hello,

today I saw an MD ad by Sharp on MTV. I'll type in a description
that might not be complete, I only caught it with half an eye:

The ad starts with several twentysomethings listening to some
music on a bookshelf system (by Sharp, obviously). After a
couple of rather uninformative shots of the people "grooving",
one guy pops out the minidisc, which looks like a blank (it had
no label I think), puts it into his portable and walks out.
Cut to: a harbour environment, two guys meet, both with portable
MD players. They sit down, open their portables and exchange
the discs. One of them points his indiglo Sharp remote into the
camera, then they part. Subtitle: "Digital deal with Sharp
minidisc" or something like that.

Now, this is far less cryptic than Sony's ads, but what exactly
WAS the message ? Sharp endorses (probably) illegal trading of
music ? And if it was legal, why did they meet on a quay ?
Oh well, at least the recording aspect was emphasized more clearly
(at least I believe the disc was recorded in the beginning).
And none of them carried pigeons on the head !

BTW, is this a new ad ?

The Hoontech Digital-XG would be nice, but Yamaha still refuses to

I have read that the Soundblaster cannot copy bit by bit.

If you're talking about the fixed samplerate of 48 kHz, that's

If that's true, the CDs will be useless for those of us with outboard DACs.
I checked the manufacturer's site and as I'd feared, there was no
 information of real substance...just market-speak.

Luckily, that doesn't seem to be the case (again in german):

http://www.heise.de/newsticker/data/cm-26.01.00-000/

Neither SPDIF outputs nor Audio CD-Copiers like the Philips CDR-765
were affected by the protection. Copies made with the Philips did
not contain the protection. So all the people who bought these
devices don't look so foolish anymore, eh ? ;)

The trick seems to be a fake TOC that gives a runtime of 28 seconds
for the CD. PC CD-ROM drives get fooled by this and stop reading.
What's interesting is that the article says ALL CD players display a
runtime of 28 seconds. So apparently you not only lose the ability to
play the CD from your PC, your Hi-Fi CD player looks pretty dumb as
well.

I don't think so, have a look at the pictures at
 http://www.hoontech.com/product/digitalIObrakets/nxdb2e.htm
I believe that the NXDB II is a cheaper digital connections for a digital
 amp or the external A/D-converter.

The Hoontech site isn't exactly an example of providing clearly
understandable information. I can't find any confirmation that
either of the DB III brackets can be connected directly to the
Digital-NX. I think you need the NX DB II as an intermediate
step ?

Anyway, if I need both modules it is still cheaper than the DIO 2448 and I
could use the NX for games too, so it seems to me the cheapest possibility
for a recording card. Any other suggestions?

What exactly IS the DIO 2448 ? And while it might still be cheap,
it would probably be easier to just get a Live! (no pun intended,
honestly !) where you have to deal with only one bracket. And you
have confirmed functionality of both SPDIF directions (according
to FAQ).

If you're talking about the fixed samplerate of 48 kHz, that's
apparently the case with every AC97 compliant card.

Yes. The plus of the NX is, that there should exist a solution with Linux.
With Win you have the 48kHz problem too.

Actually, I was told that the 4DWave NX chip can output in 32 and 44.1 kHz
as well, just the drivers are locked at 48 kHz. I wonder if that is true.
Now since Trident has stopped any involvement in sound hardware (I think
I read this somewhere) you can probably forget about this showing up in
Windows anytime soon. But since the Linux drivers are open-source, perhaps
it can be implemented ?
It probably doesn't matter, I guess it wouldn't improve the quality of
MP3 - ATRAC transfers at all. :)

15 DM for a 5-pack of colored TDKs (5 differently colored disks

Plus they've got better labels.

17 DM for a 5-pack of colored Sony blanks I think, but I'm
not sure.

38 DM for 10 Sony "Premium" blanks (dark-blue translucent top)
plus one piece of that silver plastic "Tower System" rack thingy

The other possibility is that Easy CD Creator moves the track splits

know that if a sound file isn't the multiple of a block (a couple of
thousand bytes if I remember correctly) long you can get noise between
the tracks, which is really bad for live recordings.
I did this with a shareware tool so far, the name escapes me right now.
The awkward thing is that this tool doesn't work with peak files, so it
reads the complete wav file once on start, quite a lot when you have a
full CD !

in jetaudio to make it "cd-quality?" I'm using either ez-cd creater or nero

Audio CDs store music in 16 bit, 44.1 kHz stereo samples.
Other than that, I wouldn't know what your writing program

Re: MD: Soundblaster Live! 1024 Player anyone ?

IF so a cmopany called opcode (www.opcode.com) produce a device called the DATPort
which is a digital input/ouput device. This may be the ideal solution for you - no
MIDI, XLR, COAX or anything other than 1 input and 1 output.

Looks interesting, but unfortunately has no optical connectors.
And at $250 I'd rather buy a new soundcard, since I need a
new one anyway. Thanks for the tip though !

3.5mm miniplug - same as on a portable MD unit.

Oh great, I'd have to buy another cable then,
but at least it's not coaxial.

Output is 48kHz only, as with all Creative digital-output sound cards. Your
MD has a sample rate converter though so don't worry.

Yeah, but that still means another loss in quality. It's
probably not much, but if you take it to the extreme,
Analog - Wav - MP3 - Upsampling - Atrac is a lot of
conversion.

  3. Is there a possibility to add a digital input to the card ?

No. I think that's why they call it the "1024 Player".

Hmm, I thought that was because it's targeted at gamers,
I assume you own this card and know for sure ? Having the
option of digital input for later is critical for me, though.
Right now it seems like getting a standard Live! Value
plus a digital I/O board would be the better choice ?

Re: MD: SB LIVE

1999-10-07 Thread Alexander Dietrich

Hey just a quick question ... what is the best way to record mp3's to MD if
i have a SB live with optical hookup. I need something that handles track
 marking etc etc.

Unfortunately, no consumer audio card seems to be able to
do that (track marking). Does anyone know if there is _any_
kind of PC equipment that is able to send more than mere
audio streams ?

For now, you can insert 3 second silence MP3s into your
playlist, or use the Winamp pause plug-in that is available here:
http://website.lineone.net/~hedstrong1/gen_paus.zip
Don't know if that one works well though.

Alexander - Would it be so hard to create track marks ? I don't think so.

Re: MD: OT: Linux

1999-09-29 Thread Alexander Dietrich

The most critical thing is I must be able to boot into Win98 intact, and
also exit to DOS mode intact. Linux must'nt touch my files in base
640K memory (currently just 19K, despite having DOS EMS enabled,
 wow)

If you have another emtpy harddisk or enough unpartitioned space
for Linux there shouldn't be a problem. But if you have one disk
that is completely covered by Windows, you must be very careful !
First thing I would do is making a backup of all your own data,
text documents, spreadsheets, p0rn, whatever... :)
Then you can try to decrease the size of Windows's partition.
There's a free tool called FIPS that supposedly does this which
comes with some Linux distributions. Or you get Partition Magic,
which is included in Caldera Linux in some form I think. A cleaner
way would be to erase the disk completely and do a proper partitioning,
but a lot more work of course.
If you use the standard LILO boot manager booting Win98 is no
problem, I do it all the time. You can even set LILO up to boot
Windows by default and Linux only if you intervene or the other
way round. (Which is, of course, way better :)

I don't know what you mean about EMS memory, but there is no
such nonsense in Linux.

Good luck,

Okay, so no PC bay drive gizmo. What would you recomend for digital
  recordings ?
  1. PC sound card with digital o/p
  2. integrated CD/MD hifi separate (seems funny using those two words in
 the
same phrase, but you know what I mean).
  3. CD player with digital o/p.
  4. any others

CD player with digital outputs gets my vote because its what I use, but
there is a lot of discussion at present about using soundcards with digital
 outputs.

I'd like to get a digital in/out soundcard, but there
are some issues that keep me from buying one:

1. No track marks
2. No Linux drivers
3. Effectively no SCMS control (but I don't really care)

Until these are remedied, I'm happy with my CD player's
digital out.

Hi,

EOF marker card was filled with 80 nines, since it was an 80 column
card. The code was being written when the date 9/9/99 was so far off
that everyone thought the program would be replaced by a more modern
technology before it bacame a problem. Using a 9's card to signify EOF
was standard procedure for the industry. I learned it from my classes
at IBM. So I guess according to your perfect 20-20 hindsite, Big Blue
should be forced into bankrupcy for teaching such a poor technique.

Because of that, and the fact that they can deduce the date "9/9/99"
from a row of 80 nines. No wait, don't use that algorithm in your code
kids, you're probably violating an IBM patent on date compression that
is unheard of until now !!!
Just because IBM teaches something doesn't make it good. Did you ever

anything either.

Oh yes it can. It's a so called "thought virus" that eats up your
and other people's time and computer resources(= money) just like
those fake e-mail virus warnings you get all the time. People
just read this crap, panic, and proceed to follow the orders
given by the e-mail without really thinking about the contents.

Where it says, "Short Date Sample", look and see if it shows a
"two digit" year format ("YY"). Unless you've previously changed it
(and you probably haven't) -- it will be set incorrectly with just the
two Y's..it needs to be four!

Well this setting defines how a short date is DISPLAYED, right
beneath this box is a setting for displaying a long date, so what ?
Operating Systems don't even pass date information to applications
in human readable form so this setting shouldn't affect anything.

Sorry for posting OT,

Why only pre-recorded discs ? According to the latest "poll" on md-l,
this feature will hardly ever be used then...

With an optional Ethernet card, MD Discam connects to a PC so users can

This seems like another useless limitation. If I have digital storage
