Re: MD: Tarnished brandnames (was-Re: MiniDisc Weekly News...)

1999-12-14 Thread Steven Brooks

This is more of what I meant than having not heard the brand name in years.
It was also a shock to find they are starting to make audio equipment --
something akin to finding that the brand "Maytag" also makes vacuum
cleaners. Or that "Craftsman" also makes engine parts. You think of
"Maytag" as a brand that specializes in washers/dryers and dishwashers, and
"Craftsman" specializes in tool-making.

On another level, "Casio" is not exactly thought of as high-end. Maybe
they're trying to change that (though it's a little late methinx)

Well, I've got a MZ-E40 for an excellent price (~$92 on Ebay) so I can't
complain too much... it is my first minidisc portie. But ideally, I would
like to find a unit that doesn't skip as much, and munch both AA batteries
in 1.5 hours. I've even dropped the thing, and it still works (Thank God.)
As long as you don't mind holding it fairly still and buying batteries in
bulk, it's an alright MD portie :)

MD: disc capacity (was-Re: Name Full!!!)

1999-12-13 Thread Steven Brooks

In reference to the part of the paragraph that's "carroted" (i.e.,
"...write over titling space to increase capacity") -- how would you go
about doing that? I'd love to fit in a few more songs, and often find the
74 minute capacity stifling, since I had grown up on and gotten used to
cassettes that were anywhere from 90 - 110 minutes long (if only that
capacity on MD) I go on hourlong runs or hour-and-a-half long runs
every once in awhile, and that 74 minutes just gets to be a little too
short...

So Rodney, back to the subject: about how many tracks do you commonly get
onto a disc before filling the titling space?

snip

I counted about 180 characters in that Jennifer Lopez track - so I'm
guessing about 9ish tracks (?) before filling all of the space. I wonder if
there's a way to increase titling space by writing onto the music area
(kinda the opposite to the trick where you write over titling space to
increase capacity).

MD: Fluctuations in remaining time

1999-12-13 Thread Steven Brooks

Sometimes, I find my deck at home (a 320) will, after a number of edits,
slicing, dicing, and moving, that the "total minutes" -- 74:59, seems to
diminish the more you edit. Let me explain more fully: If you have X
number of tracks, and you find you need to slice off about 5 seconds off of
3 tracks, due to your absentmindedness of leaving the minidisc unit
recording while your tape deck launched into the next song. This, of
course, means you need to take 15 seconds off altogether. Your disc reads
29:30 now (minutes left to record). You make the edits, and now find the
remaining time is 29:38, not the 29:45 you were expecting. So, in essence,
I am never guaranteed my 74:59 of recording time unless I make NO edits?

You actually run OUT of characters on your disc? Do you really need more
than 1700 characters (AFAIK, the maximum limit)? Exactly how much time DO
you have on your hands for these marathon titling sessions? :-)

Throwing in my 2 cents, I get irked when I have to title a track like the
Quad City DJ's "C'mon Ride It (The Train)" especially if I'm including the
Band's name... Let's see... if you had songs like that (40 characters long,
including apostrophes and spaces) on an MD, you would have to title 42.5
songs, a feat few Md-er's have achieved up until now...

As far as the eight- or ten-line LCD on the MD, I suppose it might be
practical for showing the preceding song, the current song playing, and the
next song; for more long-winded titles, it would display the current title
in however many lines needed.

While titling a recording of Handel's 'Semele' , which contains lots of
snappy numbers like
'Ah, wretched prince... Wing'd with our fearsO prodigy, to me of dire
portent!'
on my Sony deck, I received the 'Name Full !!!' message. I like to pack the
info in when titling, and with opera, you can really get carried away, but
to my amazement, this is the first time I've ever exceeded the limit. Just
wondered if anyone else had ever run out of space in normal use?

The titling feature seems to me to be one of the major glories of the
format, and high on my wish list is for some manufacturer to produce a deck
with either a small eight or ten line LCD screen, or a thin display that
runs the width of the unit. The truncated titles that you end up looking at
really get on my tits. Maybe Japanese is less verbose.

Well, I seriously doubt any company is going to be resting on its laurels,
except possibly after a new product launch -- and that's what the 2-week
vacation is for. They exist to make money -- and if they're not doing
anything, then they're losing money.

So just be patient. I'm not sure when the 330/530/630/730/930 decks came
out, but I sure wouldn't call Sony "resting" after releasing these 5
new(er) MD decks. Maybe they are working on the next big thing... i
dunno... a Microdisc that's half the size of Minidisc which they'll release
in 5 years? Maybe they're working on a MD format that'll hold 100 or 120
minutes of stereo music (200 to 240 of mono!) Who knows?

What's the web address for Wholesale Connection?

Now going OT about catalog design...
I'm suprised by your comment on Crutchfield... but then again, I wondered
how/why their catalog got slicker and glossier with every year. From a
designer's standpoint, it's a very distinctively "clean" look to their
catalog - two or three typefaces per page, and colors that go 'together'
(dark blue and and green for instance; the opposite of this would be dark
blue and orange, which makes for a nice contrast, but rather upsetting to
the eye). I don't care for, say, PC/MacWarehouse's catalog (just as an
*example* folks, not to start another Jobs Vs. Gates war -- I actually do
like the company alot just not their catalogs), because they use at least
10 different fonts per page and use every color of the spectrum at least
once per double-truck (left-and-right pages)...

Then again... I've never seen a computer catalog I liked. :-P
maybe MacConnection's catalog, but that's a stretch...

Subject: MD: equipment advice, regarding the future

G'day..

I've got a bit too much cash on hand, and not enough sense, so like a lot
of
people nowdays, i'm looking at getting a MD setup..

wow wish I could say the same thing :( I intend to be in that position
soon though, hehe

As for portability, i was looking at the Sony MZ-E33.. which is reasonably
priced, and uses atrac-4, apparently.. it has the good headphone amp in it
that the original recorder has - i need it to drive some beefy sennheisers
:)

Good things and bad things about the Sony brand -- they finally had the
good sense to implement this AVLS (Automatic Volume Limiting System) for
most of these teenagers, etc. who listen to their "Walkmans"
(CD/tape/MD/radio portables) way too loud. Then they got even smarter by
implementing an "On/Off" switch for this same AVLS ;-) That's why I
avoided Sony for so many years...

I've heard a few things about it tho - it only has a 10 second anti-shock
memory, and apparently this model is more susceptible to shocks than
others.. does anyone own one, and go running with it? find any problems?

I love going running with my walkman - it's got this hand grip attached to
it so in case I stumble or what have you, the thing won't immediately go
crashing to the ground. Until Sony, etc. comes out with a "sports" MD
walkman, I'm afraid that's what'll happen as soon as I step out of the
store...

For the home deck, i was gonna do the whole Sony thing and get the
MDS-JE330. As this is going to be something i'm looking at having for the
next 5 or more years, are there any technical limitations which this model
has which will piss me off in a year or so's time?

I went with a 320, that I'm sure is similar in some aspects -- but I can
tell you I wish I had spent the extra money and gotten at least a 520. I
don't have a stereo/mono option, no remote, and no shuffle or repeat
options... just Record, Stop, and Play pretty much! :-b

Buying a CD deck without an optical out really ticked me off, but luckily
the shop is going to trade it up to one with an optical for about $120...

I'd bought my CD player long before even thinking about getting MD, and it
has no digital out at all. I'm going to upgrade hopefully within the next
3-4 months though to one with digital out, and possibly this Technics model
5-disc changer with pitch control... it's only +/- 12% though.

the whole bundle, cd upgrade and everything, will come out at about
$1000..
which is a lot, and i dont intend to re-spend in a few years time.

My cost predictions would be as follows (sorry, these are USD$): New CD
player: $250; New MD player: $300; Portable MD player/recorder: $250; Good
Headphones: $100; 10 Sony/Maxell blank MDs: $25. Gross Total: $925. Texas
tax is 8.25%, so the Net Total would be $1001.32 and I know you're speaking
under AUS$1000, but this is only $1.32 over USD$1000 :-)

Any input will be appreciated.. Keep in mind, tho, that australia doesnt
have the largest range of .. well .. anything :)

Would it be probitively more expensive, because of shipping, to go by
mail-order? Er, or internet-order?

thanks a heap
nick

hopefully this helps!

Yeah, what I would like to see is an option to reduce hissing.

MD: a smidgeon OT: Rack configuration

1999-07-28 Thread Steven Brooks

A few years ago I bought a DCC deck from JR's Music World (boo, hiss,
yadda yadda) at their closeout price of $100, and managed to record a few
DCC's before I decided I would be hard pressed to find tapes for the thing
and decided to send it back... but now I decided I'd like to have a DCC
deck as somewhat of a novelty item in my audio system. My question was,
how many components can you stack on top of one another, in terms of
practicality? I've got the mixer on top, then the tuner underneath, one
high-end tape deck, one low-end tape deck, the MD recording deck, then the
CD changer. No shelves yet. I'm not trying to build a Tower of Babel here
:-)

Okay, okay, I admit it... I did play with legos and card decks to see how
high I could go ;-)

I've not a clue as to where the thing would plug in though... As they once
said, all roads lead to Rome, and all cables must be somehow connected to
the tuner/receiver to output correctly... Am I correct in this thinking?

-sb - thinking in 5 or 10 years we won't -have- to worry about where and
how these big clunky boxes are placed...

The whole DCC diasaster got me thinking. When did Philips first introduce
this technology, maybe '92 or '93? Then they finally gave up in like '96 or
'97? If they had had publicly introduced the DCC 4 or 5 years earlier, as
a superior media to the cassette tape, the cassette would have gone the way
of the 8-track (it is, admittedly, an obsolete and archaic technology, and
the damn things STILL sell! -- you still see 'em in record shops!). We
(the MD community) would now be in competition with DCC, instead of still
trying to get rid of the tape. Does this make any sense?

People then still wouldn't fear that the MD is trying to take over the CD,
which from talking with people. Maybe it's just the fact (silly enough
that it is) that 'MD' sounds so much like 'CD'...

Do you know what was better with the DCC titling system? Lyrics were
defined in the system, so that you could read the song text on a
scrolling display during listening. Because of this was such a superior
feature, no pre-rec tape I know used it;-)

MD: Output levels recording illumination

1999-07-20 Thread Steven Brooks

It's too bad most mid-level (or any level?) tuners/receivers do not come
with an "output level. " I remember growing up my father had (and still
does) one of these on his receiver. Most of the time it was set at the
mid-point, and me, not knowing much about audio, thought "what a pointless
thing!" and of course would always turn the output up to max (along with
the volume :-) ) He is a very avid classical music fan, as well as part
time audiophile, and for classical music, an output level is almost
necessary because all of the very soft passages, along with the loud
passages.

I think todays OEM's do not put an output level because most of the music
put out today is, to some degree, one volume level, and there rarely are
very soft passages, along with very loud passages. But I think that choice
should left to the consumer -- I can now see the definite advantage of
having an "output level" -- on any piece of audio equipment!

I had a tape deck that always illuminated in green (5 sets of lights),
yellow (2 sets), and red (3 sets). Back then, I understood from experience
that one's recording was not supposed to go into the red at all, but never
understood why some pre-recorded tapes rarely ventured into the yellow.
(Now I do of course...) This type of 3-tier illumination should be standard
on any piece of analog/digital recording equipment - is there any reason
why most OEMs do not do this?

[snip]

I *wish*! My Sony CDP-CE505 CD changer's peak search facility never finds
the true digital peak. Grega Simenc theorized that it samples only a
couple
hundred times per second (should it not sample 44,100 times per second?)
and
someone else told me that the peak search feature is designed for analog
dubbing and it seeks the passage with the loudest average volume over a few
seconds, not the single sample of greatest amplitude.

Re: MD: the hacked 80:16 discs

1999-07-16 Thread Steven Brooks

This is an old, old thread (i'm going thru my emails) but was this
regarding how to get extra minutes of a regular (74 min.) MD, or just was
hacking the 80 min. TOC?

Thanks to anyone who has any info on it.

Can anyone do the same for me, please.

Please use [EMAIL PROTECTED] so your message
doesn't end up in my bulging MiniDisc folder, thanks.

I missed how this thing works, but I can pass them on to at least 5
people not on the list, most of them will pass them on again.

Thanks!

Would whoever's turn it is to pass on the 80minute TOC contact me
privately? (Please use my normal mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]) I'll of
course
send them to two more people.

Re: MD: mini disc sound quality

1999-07-16 Thread Steven Brooks

Has this been addressed before?

I've found that when recording from tapes, most of the time the sound is
*better*. Some subtle differences in the high frequencies, making it sound
a bit crisper in the treble clef, or as someone had mentioned earlier on
the list, just a hint of being "tinny".

Does anyone get that type of sound when recording CDs onto an MD?

Also, I believe someone had mentioned (or thought) that copying a record
onto an MD would sound horrible. Why would that be so?

Hi Erick,

You pose a question that most of MD-L (the MD mailing list) would be
happy to answer. I'm forwarding my answer there because others may
wish to reply also. I suggest you join (or read the archives) to get
all the replies.

"Erick Jurado" [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

I was wondering if minidisc sound quality for recording cds or any
audio recording is better than normal audio cassettes. basically how
do minidiscs compare to tapes?

In a word, MDs sound great. They're much closer to CDs than to tapes,
both in their use and in their sound quality. The main benefit though
for me, is that they do not degrade like tapes do. You can record a CD
to MD and play it over and over and use it for years and leave it
lying around and it always sounds great, it never gets that wrinkly
sound that tapes are so prone to having after a few years.

also my home stereo is about six years old. Would this prohibit me
from hooking up a mini disc system to my stereo? Also is it possible
to record records on to minidiscs?

You can hook up an MD recorder to your home stereo just as you would a
tape deck. Records recorded to MDs reportedly sound great.

Re: MD: Long Play mode for MD's using Pitch Control?

1999-07-15 Thread Steven Brooks

Sure, if ya like the Chipmunks singing all your songs!! =^)

(faster pitch = shorter recording time)

Speeding up your songs just a bit might make a slight difference in the
time left on the MD. Maybe a minute or two overall...

Anyone any idea if it would be possible to use the
Pitch Control (on a machine like the JB920) to
store more data on an MD (like the long play mode
featured on videos)??

Could you play at say 2x speed on the JB920, record
it to another MD using a different recorder (so this
should take up half the space), then play it back
on the JB920 at half speed using the pitch control.

Don't know what kind of impact this would have on
the quality.

Anyone like to try this??

Gary.
