TIPS ON CHANGING TRANSMISSION FLUID

Mickey, The BIGGEST problem is getting the torque converter drain plug into
position! Once you have it lined up - PUT a paint mark on the crank damper
so you can easily find it NEXT time!! Then a 5 mm hex (allen) to remove the
plug and the fluid runs out. Replace the plug with a new washer (comes with
the filter) and torque to - DUH - no manuals to look it up - I think it's
about 20 ft-lbs, but CHECK IT! To refill - put 3-4 qts. of fluid into the
transmission, start the engine and allow to run for a minute or so (run
through the gears) to fill the torque converter, then shut down and add all
but the last 1/2 qt of fluid. Then go for a 20-minute drive. When the fluid
is HOT (after 15-20 minutes of driving) the level should be at the MAX
mark - LOW and MAX marks are about 300 ml (a little more then 1/2 pt) apart.
Add fluid 'til it near or at the MAX mark - DO NOT OVER FILL! With your
transmissi0on the fluid should be about 10mm below the LOW/ADD mark when
cold, but it's the warm/hot level that important.

Hello all,

How much transmission fluid do I need to change the transmission fluid in my
1985 300SD, I'm going to drain the converter too. Also any tips would be
appreciated.

It sounded like Trampas was talking about knurling the OUTSIDE of the guide

Be sure not to overtighten the bolts that attach the pan to the
transmission. That's a VERY common mistake and can damage the gasket or
pan and sometimes require that they need be replaced. If tightened too
much the pan WILL distort and that can cause fluid to leak. You can also
CUT the gasket and transmission damage is likely (do NOT ask how I know
this).

Torque on the pan bolts is 7 Nm (that's only 5.2 lb-ft). If the pan is
not distorted that's all the pressure it takes to seal the pan. More is
NOT better.

The drain plugs (pan and torque converter) have a 14 Nm value (that's
only about 10.4 lb-ft).

Knurling the valve guides is a used car lot repair. There are some old
arguments about the groves left in the guide from knurling holds more oil
for good lubrication, not in a cast iron guide, knurling fractures the metal
about .005 deep for rapid wear. Silicone bronze guides? Most OE engines that
use bronze guides wear is not a issue. Bottom line don't do it even if you
plan to sell the car.

Re: [MBZ] OT: A guy can dream can't he?

2005-10-11 Thread Trampas
Let me tell you a story...

I once got a Caravan really cheap only a few years old with a 2.6L 4 banger
Mitsu engine. I got it cheap because the head was cracked. New head and off
and running, well head cracked again, and again... Finally a friend of mine
had a totaled 3.8L V6 caravan, so I swapped engine, transmission, computers
etc. Then I had a nicer caravan. But it did not have power anything so I put
power seats, windows, door locks, etc. So now you know what I had, that is
right a POS caravan.

My lesson was that it takes the same amount of money to fix a POS as it does
a nice W126. So now I drive W126's and not a caravan.

My bad, in is cutting of groves in something like a metal handle.

As I recall from years gone by, the 3.0L V6 by Mitsu that was used in the
caravan had brass/bronze valve guides and aluminum heads. The valve guides
would come loose from head and start getting oil in cylinders and smoke like
freight trains. The solution was to press out guides, knurl them and press
back in. At least that was what I was told by the machine shop...

Having seen the after effects of the weak valve train of the engine trampas

There is a relatively simple fix for the one weak link of the valve train,

Having seen the after effects of the weak valve train of the engine trampas
mentioned, it is not propaganda.

There is a relatively simple fix for the one weak link of the valve train,
though (of course, I can't remember what it is).

True, true. But on the slightly old van you have to either draft
yourself or find an engineer / mechanic to help you move engine
mounts, fabricate parts to connect to existing drive train (unless
you're ripping everything from motor back out and if that's the case,
more mount moves) Plus trying to tell someone who may be working on
the vehicle (Hey, even gear heads feel under the weather and just want
someone else to get dirty every once in a while) why the oil filter
they are trying to put on that "Chevy 3.8 L engine" doesn't fit.

*Anything* is possible, but it may not be entirely probable. I've had
to talk myself out of measuring mount points on Mitsu 3.0 V6 engines
several times. I love those things, and I still say one of these days
one is going into an S10. And a W124. Maybe a BMW 3 Series, Jaguar XJ6
.. bullet proof and strong. But costs and cooler heads prevail and
I have yet to drop one into anything other than a Mitsu.

Can I blame the NIMBY's?
There's a bunch of them in Meridian Township, east of Lansing.
They built their homes, schools, etc on top of a pipeline.
When the pipeline had a failure 30 miles south of there, the
petro company wanted to replace the whole thing. All the nitwits
who bought houses with an old and unsafe pipeline running through
the backyard suddenly didn't think they should have to live in
a house with a pipeline running behind it, not even a much safer
one than the one that's there. The answer? Reroute it through some
poor neighborhoods in Lansing, where nobody ever volunteered to
live over a pipeline.

Re: [MBZ] Transmission Fluid

2005-10-11 Thread Dennis Perkins

Here is some tips from the archives,

There IS power going to the connection from the switch (the plug at the end

Either the band breaking OR the piston failing will result in failed

Every year Mercedes makes tens or even hundreds of changes to the cars
it builds. Some changes are VERY minor and some are quite major (the
heads and head gaskets for OM603.96 engines were all revised in '89-90).
The only way to know is to study the factory documentation. MBUSA does
NOT provide documentation on models they did not import so finding
what's better about a '90 or '92 diesel wagon is going to be difficult.
If you look at the gasoline versions of the cars, that can OFTEN provide
a hint of what might have changed. You can also ask European or Asian

On my newly acquired w126 300sd, I am having an odd problem whereby first I
thought two of the seat motors must have been shot, but when fed power
directly (to the connection under the seat) they do move.

Checked the other end of the connection and power IS coming through the
harness to the plug, enough to light up a test light anyway. But when you
plug it all in, the motors don't move.

My first suspect is a weak ground, but I assume this setup grounds itself
through the harness. Never got into electrical troubleshooting like this

All the connectors, etc., are pristine. This car came from the CA desert.

What Jeff said, Buy a Sprinter :) Slightly off topic, I saw a
*Mercedes* Sprinter in Indiana today. Has MB ever sold a properly
badged Sprinter in the NA region? If the guy hadn't been on his way
somewhere (ie filling up, getting out to get lunch, etc) I would have
stopped and asked if he had just bought the proper Euro parts to take
it back to MB badging.

Though it was a work Sprinter, hauling a small trailer, very
short wheel base, no windows in cargo area so for a van that was
obviously for work and not show it doesn't make sense that they would
have gone through the trouble to Euro-ize it.

That is quite different from the MB solution, alcohol versus soap,

it from his customer. The customer was the original owner. The
customer bought it new. He only had my mechanic work on it (with the
exception of warranty work at the dealer). When it had 140,000, my
mechanic bought it from him. He drove it for several years (he had
seven cars and used this car as a "trip" car because of the great
mileage. He drove his 94 500E on a daily basis. I bought it from my
mechanic when he was going through a divorce. He had to give his wife
something. I traded in my crappy old 84 280E and he gave her that. The
original owner was a fanatic about maintenance and cleaning and so was
my mechanic. He thought the wheels were too hard to clean, so he
purchased 6 new style wheels. So that he could also have matching rear
snow tires. I still have these. So, the car comes with 7 tires and
wheels. (four on the car, 2 snows mounted and the spare.) I honestly
don't know if which wheel the spare is on because I have never needed
it. I have service records back to the original purchase (or at least my

I have not replaced the timing chain. The chain stretch was measured

the opinion that if you used good oil, changed it frequently and never
let it get a quart down, that timing chains rarely need to be replaced.
I think I agree with him, because my old 123 had the original chain at
487,000 when I sold it. A friend of mine bought it and decided it would
be a good idea to do it at 500,000 miles. Some jackass in a suburban
crashed into him at 494XXX and it totaled the car.

I flushed the transmission when I got it. I have since changed the fluid
and filter since. I do it every 25,000 because I once bought a new MB
transmission on an older model and I have decided that $100 bucks every
25,000 is a whole lot cheaper than a new tranny.

I have NO RUST!

No body panels have been replaced on my car, no paint work has been
done.

Mine is smoke silver (I think that is what the color is called). I do
like black. But, you have to wash them every 11 minutes to keep them
clean. I really like the smoke silver color it looks very nice clean
and dust doesn't make it filthy instantly after it is washed.
Incidentally, my mechanic always hand washed this car in his shop. He
says car washes were too hard on cars. I have not followed his advice
to the letter. I still go to the car wash whenever I can't wash it at
home.

I bet mine is cleaner. Mine will also be cheaper than $6700.

By the way, my washer tank leaks. I think that is the worst problem
with the car.

[MBZ] Odd SD power seat problem

2005-10-11 Thread Steve MacSween
On my newly acquired w126 300sd, I am having an odd problem whereby first I
thought two of the seat motors must have been shot, but when fed power
directly (to the connection under the seat) they do move.

Checked the other end of the connection and power IS coming through the
harness to the plug, enough to light up a test light anyway. But when you
plug it all in, the motors don't move.

My first suspect is a weak ground, but I assume this setup grounds itself
through the harness. Never got into electrical troubleshooting like this
before, any suggestions?

All the connectors, etc., are pristine. This car came from the CA desert.

Thanks

Re: [MBZ] Speaking of batteries

2005-10-11 Thread J.B. Hebert
The Walmart battery book does list MB diesels, however the group 49
battery is rarely stocked, and some Walmarts don't want to order them
because they have to order them in lots and don't have the storage
for the extras. This has been my experience, anyway, and I'm sure
the larger stores wouldn't have a problem.

I expect that you'll want a group 49 battery - the more expensive
Wal-Mart battery looks VERY attractive.

Re: [MBZ] Consumers Reports battery ratings

2005-10-11 Thread J.B. Hebert
If price were not a consideration, I would run an Optima. However, I
can't justify three times the cost on a daily driver. The one place
I allow myself the Optima luxury is on my 4x4, where I could be 100
miles from civilization and can't afford to have a battery fail. And
even then, I run two, just in case. I could run a standard battery,
but it is nice to know if (when) I'm upside down, I'm not going to
have a battery leak. I've never been in a situation in another car
where a total battery failure would leave me in peril.

I've always been partial to Optima Batteries and so far I have

but it will never leave you stranded and the good part is it
protects itself from excessive drain and always provides enough
juice to start your car.

I've run EverStarts in everything from lawn tractors to 2 Mercedes
diesels with 0 problems. Several batteries have been severely
abused, being run completely dead numerous times, and they've always
bounced back after a good charge. For the price, you can't go

to know that scientific tests back that up, as well.

That may or may not be the rule. As I said before, the wrecker co puts

pick up the car(they rack up the bills on purpose so you wont). When
you dont pick it up, they basically auction the car off to themselves to

Re: [MBZ] sites that address voltage problems

2005-10-11 Thread Tom Hargrave
A battery isolator will drop 0.6 volts and the actual drop across long
cables will be determined by length and load.

The correct solution to both of these issues is to find a way to feed your
actual battery voltage to your alternator through a sense wire that runs
from the battery to your alternator.

For the most part, I think that's true. The exception is when someone
is using a battery isolator, or very long battery cables (like in some
VWs.) Then the Bosch alternator's lack of an external sense wire
becomes a problem.

The only quick test is the B2 only controls forward gears, it should still
have reverse. OTOH, he did say it went bang when it quit. I'm guessing it
may more likely be the B2 band that broke, not the piston.

What you describe could be caused by many things including a collapsed

differential mount.

2005-10-11 Thread Peter Frederick
Flex disk, maybe both of them (front is usually the one that goes bad
first). Also check play on pinion (the spider carrier wears out
sometimes, although that is usually only obvious when stopped and
switching from drive to reverse).

Also check tranny mount (will cause vibration under acceleration as
well) and center carrier rubber. The latter will allow serious
driveline vibration all the time, though.

Most likely the front flex disk.

I double-clicked on the first link and saved the file to disk. I then
executed "file HPIM1486.bin" and the result (telling me what kind of file

What I can be absolutely sure of is that they have different stuff

So, the actuator is Y22 on the diagram, and the relay is K1/1. I see
the picture of the relay in the manual, but it doesn't indicate the
actuator as having a picture. I should be able to follow the BR/BU
wire to it, though. I don't know what readings to expect normally, but
I will see what happens when I take a look at it.

Thank you.

2005-10-11 Thread mykd1
I've always been partial to Optima Batteries and so far I have nothing but good
things to say about them. If you can take a battery and install it in any
position (upside down, sideways) and it works no matter what then its a good
battery. Maybe a bit more in price, but it will never leave you stranded and
the good part is it protects itself from excessive drain and always provides
enough juice to start your car.

I've run EverStarts in everything from lawn tractors to 2 Mercedes
diesels with 0 problems. Several batteries have been severely
abused, being run completely dead numerous times, and they've always
bounced back after a good charge. For the price, you can't go
wrong. Seat of the pants told me they were good batteries; it's nice
to know that scientific tests back that up, as well.

" he would mail it to me when he found it." OOPS LOL he didnt mail the
car :-) I shoulda said the "Certificate or Ownership"

I have always been pretty careful about squaring away the paper work when
buying or selling a car. I bought a 5 speed 240D once and took the car
with a promise from the owner, he would mail it to me when he found it. (I
was taking that car home one way or the other, damn the torpedos) He mailed
it and all was well...WHEWOther than that I dont take too many chances

Anyway I just got a letter that a van my wife used to own (2 yrs ago)
...NO" DOES OWN" according to the letter from the towing co in a town
several miles away.(coulda been in Bumfuk Egypt) The letter went on to say
that OUR VANs been in storage for 1&1/2 mos at $32+ :'( a day plus the tow
bill :'( :'( . So I look through my files for the receipt from the Wa dept
of licensing that I ALWAYS go on line to get after selling a car,
the "report of sale". The car had been abandoned and I am responsible :-(
for it Long story short, turns out I had gone on line and filed the
notice of sale which I did find my copy of, later berried in my shop.
i was reminded to do a better job with paper work, Sorta like when the
jack slips and you realize you coulda been squished. I felt like I was
about to get "roasted" :-)I know there are far worse horror stories but
this got my attention. And turned out OK

Don,

Doesn't matter. Rotors and pads for your car will match regardless
of manufacturer/label..

Just order your choice (hard/soft - cheap/expensive) of pads for your
'77 240D IIRC, even calipers not play a role in choice of
pads or rotors if the calipers are vehicle specific.

Folks

We attempted to hook up some trailer lights today. I assume I need to
use a 6 wire to 4 wire convertor box (single filament tail to dual
filament or whatever it is, which we were using.

Anyway we were clipping into some snap over wire connectors that some
previous owner had installed. These were on a loom on the left rear
spare tire cavity next to the power antenna. We were checking our work
using an led testor.

It's all mixed up.

So do any of you have the translation of which german wire goes to
which red yellow brown green etc of the trailer connectors.

Wierdly, the cylinders all seem to be firing better, but the idle is
getting worse. I can feel that the injectors made a difference, but
they did not seem to affect the problem much at all. It seems to be
getting worse, though that might just be the temperature dropping.

What else should I be looking at?

Under any load at all, the car runs like a champ. It just hates to idle.
The idle is rough enough to make my CD player skip, though.

Check the idle actuator and the overvoltage protection relay.
Intermittent of either can result in poor idle and perfectly fine
operation under load.

Re: [MBZ] sites that address voltage problems

2005-10-11 Thread Dennis Perkins
I guess I should have stated the subject name better. I'm not advocating
any of these sites myself, but I also realize that technology has improved
over the years. For example the Optima style battery was not available when
my car came out. I now have one because I feel it's has some advantages
over a wet cell. It's technical specs rate it at being able to accept
between 13.3 to 15 volts with no amperage limit. By the way if you look at
the bottom of his site he does now sell an internally adjustable regulator.

I have read through this site before. As I recall this fellow only deals
with external, fender well mounted, regulators. I have had an ongoing
problem with my SD where I felt that the alternator voltage might be too
low. I installed a new Transpo adjustable regulator and adjusted the voltage
output to about 14.2VDC. It turns out that the higher voltage didn't help my
problem but now I know that low output voltage is not a contributing
problem. BTW, the Transpo regulator was cheap, I think less than $20.
