Marshall,

The one that pops is not from over tightening it just is noisy, and has been
that way for 100k miles. It sounds like the center detent is worn an causes
a pop as the it passes.

I kind of doubt that a 120k mile car would have every had the need to have
steering box messed with. From what I could tell the car had an alignment
before as the tie rods had piler marks. However the tie rod ends were not
worn out, and the car drove great. The guide rod bushings were worn out,
which happens at about 120k. I find that tie rod ends last till about 150k,
thus I went ahead and replaced tie rod ends.

I will get more information tomorrow. If the mechanic's answer does not make
sense I will pay him to put it on lift and show me what "play" he is
referring to.

It gets hot a steamy here, but probably 1 degrees cooler than Dallas.
You will probably be short of cooling in idling or slow traffic unless
you get a larger condenser, I don't know of any way around that. Mine
work fine -- I've never been comfortable in any car idling it traffic
with the AC on anyway, so I don't notice it much.

Once you get moving I cannot tell the difference. I would suggest
replacing the condenser if it has a lot of miles on it, they collect
crud internally over the years that reduces cooling.

You must also have the system completely dry -- 134a makes hydrofluoric
acid in the presence of water and heat.

The green ones are a different material, just what I don't know. The
older black 0-rings don't last well in PAG or PEG compressor oil,
although they will last nearly forever in mineral oil. All McParts
stores have them, and I'm sure Rusty does. He will have the correct
ones, makes it easier to get the correct ones in place -- the "kits" at
McParts have dozens of sizes, and never enough of just the one you need
-- there are at least six different ones I've found so far!

Re: [MBZ] DIY AC repair in modern times

2006-06-13 Thread Peter Frederick
It's not the flamability that is the problem, they all ignite about the
way, but a slowly evaporating liquid and a substance that is a gas a
atmospheric temperature and pressure are very different in explosion
hazard. Halogenated hydrocarbons (all Freons, and anthing else with at
least one chlorine or fluorine or bromine atom added) are NOT flammable
under normal conditions, although most of them can be induced to burn.

They don't explode as dilute mixtures in air, and that is the cogent
point here, not flammability.

Propane powered vehicles do NOT have high pressure propane in the tank,
it's cool to cold and liquid at fairly low pressure. An AC system on a
hot day will have hot gas (250F or so, maybe higher) in the condenser,
it doesn't become a liquid until it's cooled. All propane tanks have
anti-venting valves, so that tearing the regulator off (or uscrewing it
with the tank valve open) will cause the tank to seal off. The fuel
lines up to the engine have about the same pressure as the one to the
burner valves on a gas grill.

You start by adjusting it (the adjustment requires that the screw be
turned COUNTERCLOCKWISE to tighten it - just the reverse of most boxes -
many mechanics turn them "clockwise" and when they don't tighten up
condemn them) so there is only 10-15 mm play at the steering wheel (more
than that and the box will wear rapidly). Max allowed play (measured at
the steering wheel is 25 mm (about 1 inch).

If the box IS adjusted too tightly, it will wear rapidly, but most boxes
last the life of the car and few require replacement UNLESS people
adjust them incorrectly. The full adjustment procedure is complex and
few shops have the tools to preform it, but it's seldom ever required
unless people PLAY with it. Used boxes represent a very good value as
they are abundant. Recyclers have them in abundance as they seldom wear
out and are not in high demand. Used ones can often be had for $75-$100.
Rebuilt ones ($250-500) are NOT usually a good value and offer little
more than good used ones. New ones are OUT of the question ().

I suppose they can, but that's awfully low mileage for such a failure.
I'm told that if the box is adjusted too far 'tight' it accelerates
wear such that it does indeed wear out very quickly. But whole lots
of steering boxes go 2-3x that distance, and most of the replacements
I've heard of were to try to cure leaks, not wear.

I ran into a friend of mine last night who owns a Chrysler dealership,
so I asked about the new Diesel Grand Cherokee some of you mentioned -
Turns out it will not be available in NY (where I live), CA, and a few
other states he said. Apparently it will not meet emission standards.

He also speculated that the only reason Chrysler is making them is to
get their average gas mileage of vehicles over the magic number, and
therefore they will probably never try to make it pass the above states
emissions testing.

Sucks for me up here in NY - Probably a nice ride for those who can
get one.

NO! Proper offset for you car is in the 21-25 mm range (depending on
precisely which wheel is on you car). A wheel with a 51 mm offset would
be for a 124/201 car.

The kicker with bikes is the wet clutch. Using oils with friction modifiers
(I.E. molybdenum bi-sulfite?) is the possibility of damage to the clutch
pack. M1 15w-50 didn't used to have it, and neither does Rotella T 5w-40
Synthetic. I don't think M1 5w-40 has it either, but I am not certain.

MOST group III oils do used viscosity improvers!

Lots of people LOVE it. It's cheap! It's also hydrocracked group III

DOESN'T meet any of the Mercedes standard sheet specs!! Maybe Shell

2006-06-13 Thread Marshall Booth

Harry Watkins wrote:

What could cause the front shocks to fail so often?

Here is the history as I know it:

I bought the car in Dec 2003, the PO had the front and rear shocks replaced in
March 1999, Pd $120 for the front plus $98 labor, I don't know the brand. The
rears were $132 plus $98 labor.

When one of the front shocks failed in April 2005 I R&R both.

Then, in October 2005, the left front failed and was replaced (6 months old),
it was bouncy and wet.

On Friday I ordered two new front shocks to replace the two that have just
failed. My wife said she thought the front bumper was going the hit the road
as it bounced down the interstate.

When I push down near the star with both hands, I get a measured 5 inch drop.
When I stop pushing I get 4 or 5 more bounces.

I tried the same push on the other SDL, the 240D and the TD and probably got
less than an inch and no bounce.

The left front is wet and the right appears dry but is very soft and makes a
rubbing noise.

Anyone out there BTDT. Anyone with a clue, I can't see a way to install them
wrong but I could be wrong.

Bilstein shocks installed to replace the original ones, have a lifetime
warranty (for the part - not the labor) if sold/installed by an
authorized supplier. You MAY need the paperwork to get them replaced.
Most Bilstein shocks last 150-200kmi in my cars. They seldom last longer
than 100kmi in BIG models.

What seems to be important is that there is clearance between the

[MBZ] 2007 Grand Cherokee with MB Diesel

2006-06-13 Thread Dave Wakin
I ran into a friend of mine last night who owns a Chrysler dealership, so I
asked about the new Diesel Grand Cherokee some of you mentioned - Turns out it
will not be available in NY (where I live), CA, and a few other states he said.
Apparently it will not meet emission standards.

He also speculated that the only reason Chrysler is making them is to get their
average gas mileage of vehicles over the magic number, and therefore they will
probably never try to make it pass the above states emissions testing.

Sucks for me up here in NY - Probably a nice ride for those who can get one.

Re: [MBZ] Wheel offset

2006-06-13 Thread Desert Rat

Don,
I have been told that the W140 takes a special wheel (different hub
fitting plus the larger offset) than the W126. I wasn't able to put
W126 wheels on my W140 and would suspect the opposite is true as well,
but I don't know that for sure.

Be aware that the W126 never had the 8 hole option from the factory,
only bundts and flatface types but I think Tirerack has developed a
relica 8 hole wheel.

I agree, Tire Rack wheels are probably fine. But, Jim (from Phoenix)
has some nice 8 hole wheels that are 16 X 7.5 with some nice Michelins
on them. If I buy four new wheels from Tire Rack that will be $400. If
I buy his they will be $350 and I get some good tires. ($350 is what he
has them on ebay for - maybe I can offer him Kaleb pricing). The only
problem is I think the offset is going to be too much. His wheels are
+51 offset. So, I think that is too much difference. But, I am not
sure.

Most undercooling problems are a result of overcharging -- R134a is
lighter than R12, only put in 80 to 85% of the weight -- otherwise you
get high suction side pressures and low cooling.

am afraid that if I don't use the hooks properly (exact location of
penetration?) that I will break something. Some kind of clip, or something that
the hooks push out of the way. Do not know exactly where to force in the hooks.
Could some one hold my hand on this one and explain it a bit more?

The clips are little twig-like forked things that are barely held on
at the front, it's a very weak design. I found them in the guts of
the car when I took it apart, and it took some sleuthing in order
to figure out where they went.

See http://cathey.dogear.com/mb190d.html, at the end of the log

Does anyone know which state and which insurance company have the cheapest
auto insurance rates? Just got my insurance bill from Allstate for two old
MBs here in Florida:  $840 for the minimum insurance required by the state;
no comprehensive, etc. included; and that's with one driver for two cars.

Anyone who does not have a job in Florida can have out-of-state tags and
insurance, so it's possible to establish residence in any other state and
still live here. (I'm thinking about living in another state in the summer
anyway.)

Homeowners insurance has gone up, which is understandable because of the
hurricanes, but that kind of auto insurance bill for little besides
liability seems high.

It's about the same as the bill for homeowners insurance on the house
($853).

Also, if anyone is familiar with the insurance/licenscing costs in various
states for motorhomes, that info would be appreciated too since motorhome
living is an option.

On the W123, at least, it can also serve as a spare oil cap, should you
misplace that. I thought they looked awfully similar, so I tried
swapping them once, and they fit. The only difference, as far as I can
tell, is the oil cap has 'OEL' stamped on it.

You'll find that as liability and lawsuits have gotten more out of control,
more and more places are going to be less likely to rent you a trailer if
you tell them you are going to pull it behind a 300D.

For a cheap[er] way to go, some LTL (less than truckload) shippers will
drop a box at your house for you to pack, then send that box via freight.
Might be cheaper than driving on top of the price of a u-haul.

If you have cash to burn, you could pick up a not too old box van (or even
cargo van if not a lot of stuff), then sell it when you're done moving.

Well, it was. What I needed was about five tablespoons of it.

Turns out the MB brake fluid is manufactured by CCI Manufacturing in

1500kg with brakes, 750kg w/o is the factory rating for a lot of MBz models, I

Jim,
Some friendly advice on what I know you have made into a good car.
State the positives first-not the negatives. Then add the qualifiers.
And do a lot more hype-in the car business the first goal is get them to
bite-then tell that later on in the ad. By then they are excited. For
example, put mileage at the end. Get the bio freaks excited, or the MB
diesel freaks going about how good it runs. Don't mention cold start
unless asked. I am not trying to be sleazy-just strategic. If you want,
I can get my car dealer and 240D owner brother to help with your ad.

For sale, 1979 240D. 302kmi, auxiliary fuel tank. Perfect
for biodiesel operation, has 1000 mile range.

Not perfect, but looks pretty good. Rust-free. Reluctant cold-starter,
but has started every time for me so far. Very clean inside, you can
date with this car and not be ashamed.

$2500 See http://cathey.dogear.com/mb240dsale.html for pictures and
more information.

OK, I don't expect you guys to buy it, I'm planning to list it on nearby
Craigs lists to start, especially in Seattle. But I'd appreciate
feedback on the web site, etc.

I'm planning to redo the pictures if I can get a nice overcast day while
it's still clean. The hazy sun resulted in pictures that are much more
washed-out looking than the car deserves. Also need to get an engine

In light of the above, does anyone really want to maintain that use of

The kicker with bikes is the wet clutch. Using oils with friction modifiers
(I.E. molybdenum bi-sulfite?) is the possibility of damage to the clutch

So how many of these Goldwing owners are driving diesels? Rotella is
very ordinary oil, as Marshall is wont to say.

Rotella syn is no big deal either. Go with Mobil 1...it's
recommended by the guys that designed your car! What more should you
need to know?

(of course I assume you mean to keep the vehicle in its best shape. If
you're changing oil every 3kmi then use whatever.)

Re: [MBZ] SDL using more front shocks than oil.

2006-06-13 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin

Are you using bilsteins?

Help!!!

Well the hydrocarbons are legal in about every other country

David Brodbeck wrote:

The propane is vastly more explosive than the oil -- this is, in fact,
why hydrocarbon refrigerants are illegal in cars, not because they
don't work well (very low temp cryo freezers run pentane, I belive, or
propane, for the low temp part), but because of the explosion hazard.

On the other hand, many people put large quantities of gasoline in their
cars, which forms an explosive mixture even more readily than propane.
And quite a few people (myself included) have driven around in RVs with

*gallons* of propane on board in exposed, external tanks, often with the
tank valve open and a propane-fired refrigerator running. I'm sure
there's some risk of explosion, but it's hard for me to see this as a
major issue.

I suspect part of the reason that hydrocarbon refrigerants are illegal
is because the companies that own the patents on the non-hydrocarbon
ones have a certain amount of monetary influence over the regulatory
agencies. I've always thought it was a little suspicious that R12 was
banned just as the patent was expiring.

Been there done that.
Either put the cap on the pump so you can go back and get it-or in the
clip that the 123's and 124's have on the fuel flap-I assume that the
201's have it too.. I also carry an extra cap in the trunk for such

After breakfast yesterday morning we stopped at the cheap fuel station
and tanked up the 190D. Going home we hit the highway, I heard a thump
and then started smelling diesel fuel. The gauge wasn't moving
appreciably so I didn't worry about it. We went to the movies, when we
came out there was a wet spot under the car. Looking around I noticed
there was a wet draintube. Thats when I checked and sure enough, no fuel
cap...

So thinking back I put the fuel nozzle back on the pump and fought
with it to get a receipt, then got back in the car and drove off. The
thump was the fuel door closing as we got up to highway speed. The smell
is from the fuel sloshing out. I headed back to the gas station and the
dude had the cap in hand as I approached.
