[MBZ] A couple general questions about 190D
Two quickies regarding our 87 190D: Is the passenger door supposed to not be able to unlock from the outside? Nothing at all happens when key is turned. How much deflection should the serp. belt have? We had it replaced with the alternator and various tensioner equip. It seems, to me, looser than it should be. Re: [MBZ] A couple general questions about 190D
If a door has a keyhole, then it should both lock and unlock via that door. If the OM601 engine is anything like my OM603, then you shouldn't have much deflection at all in your serpentine belt. I'd look to the tensioner pivot to see if it's sitting at an angle to the timing chain cover. Wow, I haven't studied the various classic Benz models, but after viewing the photos, this may be my favorite. It works for me too! I know the mid/late 60s were a great time for American car styling. Yes, me too. The year was 1968 and a MB dealer had just opened in the small city where I was going to college. Re: [MBZ] Front Wheel Bearings
Hi Robert, Not sure what container Rusty sells - last time I did my bearings I bought grease at the dealer - the tube held enough to do 2 wheels, so I just had to fold the tube in half and ended up with 1/2 grease in each half (approx) - it takes a little experimenting t o find the halfway point - but it's semi-precise. The alternative is to find an inexpensive scale to meaure the grams of grease - which I have not looked into. Re: [MBZ] This is a pretty car
It's a typical 280S W108 chassis - carburated version of the 280SE/SEL. I owned one for many years - it was my 1st MB. Big 6 cylinder that cruised effortlessly at 80 all day long - that was it;s sweet spot - the suspension got firm and felt as smooth as glass - the engine was running at the rpm it seemed to like - I guess it was into the peak hp or peak torque rpm. It was a typical S Class sedan - MB offered more powerful versions - like the 300SE/SEL 6.3 which was a true hot rod but the 280S/SE/SEL was the S Class for the masses. Loved it. My only complaint was the carbs (dual) which never seemed right altho I usually for upper teens/low 20s gas mileage. I probably would have disliked the FI even more since I knew nothing about FI at the time. The price for this one is not bad - but I wouldn;t pay more that $2500 for a very nice one. Also, this one doesn;t seem to have the typical rust around the headlight buckets but the angle of the front bumper indicates rust on the bumper supports - which can be pretty expensive to repair. The 6 is more economical to operate and maintain that the 4.5 V8 common to the 72-73 models. But nothing compares to a diesel for simplicity and economy. Let ,me know if anyone gets serious about this car and Ill look closer at the photos. Now that I think about it, I'd like to have one of these if I had the space. Re: [MBZ] W124 seat switch
The seat switches in my 190D were bad and worked only occasionally when I got the car. I don't think you can get enough contact cleaner in there to make much difference, I couldn't anyway. Once you take one apart you'll know why. I replaced both of mine with units from Rusty. A hint: Don't take the switch apart in the car... Little balls and tabs and springs go everywhere. Re: [MBZ] OT: Inexpensive compressor
Curt Raymond wrote: Anyway I can't afford more than about $250. I'd like to run an impact wrench, maybe a spot blaster and a couple other fairly low air tools. Are you in a hurry? 15 years ago I bought a low hour (looked like new) 2hp Sanborn from an ad in the local paper for $175. Took me 2-3 months to find it. Fortunately, it was the only one I spent time looking at. Only time I want more is when I'm using a die grinder. Duty cycle on that grinder is like 20-30% on my little compressor. A friend bought a Campbell Hausfeld 2hp airless. Very noisy, but that might be because the one of the 'connecting rods' broke. It was a twin cylinder opposed unit, the pistons and connecting rods were cast in one piece from aluminum or pot metal. The drive was very crude. I don't remember the specifics, but I think there was an offset peg on the motor shaft that rode in a slot in the center of the piston assembly to kick the pistons back and forth. If that's any indication of oilless compressor construction, stay far away. Generally, the bigger a compressor is, the slower and quieter it seems to be. (not to mention more expensive) A friend of mine owns a monument company, they carve the lettering in the marble with a sandblaster. When he needed a new compressor, he bought a truck mounted rotary screw compressor from a electric company auction, and then sold the truck for close to what he paid for it after he took the compressor off it. Output to noise ratio is quite good on that compressor, but I doubt you need 50+ CFM for anything you do. I have a friend who had a Mazda diesel years ago and got about 38mpg out of it. My oldest daughter had a VW diesel pickup and got about 40mpg out of that. I have only owned 14 heads with over 200K to over 400k miles, all with no problems. As Marshall said, if they were going to fail, they would have failed by now. I will happily buy any 14 head car that everybody else wants to pass up, as long as it has not been overheated in the last 10-20 k miles. Alex said OT third H, a 603 car with a known good head; accelerator and transmission linkages adjusted by the book; ALDA set properly; the vacuum system sorted out; and good shocks, springs, and suspension rubber is an engineering masterpiece that stacks up to just about any car, new or old. [MBZ] 300 SD 722-303 transmission trouble
My brand new '82 300SD *suddenly* and *with no warning* developed a transmission problem: does not shift out of first. Reverse and First shifts are quick. Since I stuck the Kaleb motor along with a known good transmission (~ 100k miles) in the car, everything was fine for ~ 10K miles. The old transmission leaked bad and it happened when the fluid level went low that it would not shift up. This time the fluid level is good. IIRC, you move the ride height lever (cockpit control) to full high, stick a stand under the affected corner of the car, and then lower the ride height to raise the wheel. Not as nifty as the onboard jacks in a Indycar, but still pretty slick. (when the hydraulics are working) The brake pedal is something else too. Re: [MBZ] Oil Consumption
I seem to remeber reading that MB specs is 1% oil use versus fuel used, or in other worrds for every 100 litres of fuel it is OK to use 1 litre of oil. A PITA more than difficult, it's a job to get all the short hydraulic lines back in place without stripping the fittings. Accumulators were about $100 each when I did mine, but that's a few years back. Takes a couple hours to do, no more if you have a lift. Should I be concerned? Bob, I would like to know where it is going if I am using that much. Check the line from the vacuum pump to the intake. Oil leaks pumped from either the vacuum pump itself, or the shut off diaphragm on the FI pump, will end up going into the engine without being visible. You can put the line in a 2 litre soda bottle for a few days to watch this. From add to full is about 2 quarts. Are you remembering to only use the lower half of this range. Filling to full will likely use the top quart more quickly. Slow down! I know that is a boring ride to the site but blowby is a function of engine load, as we discussed before.
