[MBZ] A couple general questions about 190D

2008-01-16 Thread Zoltan Finks
Two quickies regarding our 87 190D:
Is the passenger door supposed to not be able to unlock from the outside?
Nothing at all happens when key is turned.

How much deflection should the serp. belt have? We had it replaced with the
alternator and various tensioner equip. It seems, to me, looser than it
should be.

2008-01-16 Thread Zeitgeist
If a door has a keyhole, then it should both lock and unlock via that door.

If the OM601 engine is anything like my OM603, then you shouldn't have much
deflection at all in your serpentine belt. I'd look to the tensioner pivot
to see if it's sitting at an angle to the timing chain cover.

Wow, I haven't studied the various classic Benz models, but after viewing
the photos, this may be my favorite. It works for me too! I know the
mid/late 60s were a great time for American car styling. And aircraft

Yes, me too. The year was 1968 and a MB dealer had just opened in the small
city where I was going to college. My then girlfriend and I went down to the
dealers and there they were-three of them-it was lust at first sight. Right
then I vowed to have an MB-I never forgot that lust/love. (Girlfriend is
long gone.) I still would like a W108.

Re: [MBZ] Front Wheel Bearings

2008-01-16 Thread LarryT
Hi Robert,
Not sure what container Rusty sells - last time I did my bearings I
bought grease at the dealer - the tube held enough to do 2 wheels, so I just
had to fold the tube in half and ended up with 1/2 grease in each half
(approx) - it takes a little experimenting t
o find the halfway point - but it's semi-precise.

The alternative is to find an inexpensive scale to meaure the grams of
grease - which I have not looked into.

Good luck -

Re: [MBZ] This is a pretty car

2008-01-16 Thread LarryT
It's a typical 280S W108 chassis - carburated version of the 280SE/SEL. I
owned one for many years - it was my 1st MB.

Big 6 cylinder that cruised effortlessly at 80 all day long - that was it;s
sweet spot - the suspension got firm and felt as smooth as glass - the
engine was running at the rpm it seemed to like - I guess it was into the
peak hp or peak torque rpm. It was a typical S Class sedan - MB offered
more powerful versions - like the 300SE/SEL 6.3 which was a true hot rod but
the 280S/SE/SEL was the S Class for the masses. Loved it.

My only complaint was the carbs (dual) which never seemed right altho I
usually for upper teens/low 20s gas mileage. I probably would have disliked
the FI even more since I knew nothing about FI at the time.

The price for this one is not bad - but I wouldn;t pay more that $2500 for a
very nice one. Also, this one doesn;t seem to have the typical rust around
the headlight buckets but the angle of the front bumper indicates rust on
the bumper supports - which can be pretty expensive to repair.

The 6 is more economical to operate and maintain that the 4.5 V8 common to
the 72-73 models. But nothing compares to a diesel for simplicity and
economy.

Let ,me know if anyone gets serious about this car and Ill look closer at
the photos. Now that I think about it, I'd like to have one of these if I
had the space.

Take care --

Re: [MBZ] W124 seat switch

The seat switches in my 190D were bad and worked only occasionally when I got
the car.
I don't think you can get enough contact cleaner in there to make much
difference, I couldn't anyway. Once you take one apart you'll know why.
I replaced both of mine with units from Rusty.

A hint: Don't take the switch apart in the car... Little balls and tabs and
springs go everywhere. The old advice to take it apart in a plastic bag is spot
on.

The electric seat control on the door of my 300D 2.5t only works in
 some
positions-this is recent, although it seemed to be flakey on the
 forward
position when I got the car. Had stopped altogether and then I sprayed
 dome
electrical contact cleaner in it today to give it the Cathey treatment.
Seemed to help a bit, but not sure it didn't discolor the door panel a
 bit.
Can I remove this switch by just pulling off the plastic handle? Or
 other
disassembly required? (I am used to the 240D's with the $16.75

Are you in a hurry?
15 years ago I bought a low hour (looked like new) 2hp Sanborn from
an ad in the local paper for $175. Took me 2-3 months to find it.
Fortunately, it was the only one I spent time looking at. Only time
I want more is when I'm using a die grinder. Duty cycle on that grinder
is like 20-30% on my little compressor.

A friend bought a Campbell Hausfeld 2hp airless. Very noisy, but that
might be because the one of the 'connecting rods' broke. It was
a twin cylinder opposed unit, the pistons and connecting rods were
cast in one piece from aluminum or pot metal. The drive was very crude.
I don't remember the specifics, but I think there was an offset peg
on the motor shaft that rode in a slot in the center of the piston
assembly to kick the pistons back and forth. If that's any indication
of oilless compressor construction, stay far away.

Generally, the bigger a compressor is, the slower and quieter it seems
to be. (not to mention more expensive)

A friend of mine owns a monument company, they carve the lettering in
the marble with a sandblaster. When he needed a new compressor, he bought
a truck mounted rotary screw compressor from a electric company auction,
and then sold the truck for close to what he paid for it after he took
the compressor off it. Output to noise ratio is quite good on that
compressor, but I doubt you need 50+ CFM for anything you do.

The phone number appears to belong to a cell phone in Reseda CA.
http://www.thedirectory.org/pref/search/818.htm

50mpg would be a good score for a VW Rabbit. I think a friend of mine
was claiming up to 50 hwy at 55 or 60mph in a diesel 5ap Tempo. Considering
the aero advantages a Tempo has over a Ranger, I would say that the Ranger
isn't going to hit 50mpg at any speed over 40mph.

Zach,,

Are you talking about a DS19, DS21, or something else? Full wagon, I
assume? I believe they were named safari wagons?

Well, they are uncommon especially here in the States. Problem areas
include, but are not limited to:

Hydraulic system for the suspension which also feed the brakes and
power steering. Not a bad system by design, but they often suffered at
the hands of unskilled technicians.

Electrical systems. Think early lucas, but at least ground is the
correct polarity.

Rust, rust, and more rust! Think w114 coupe daily driven in the
north-east.

If it has a semi-automatic gearbox, think MB hydrak! Ugh!

Seriously, they are neat cars, drive and ride like nothing else. The 4
cylinder is a simple motor. Parts are not too hard to come across once
you have an in with a few suppliers. Beware of inferior aftermarket
quality parts. There are times when you will need to ship bits in from
overseas though. Napa carries little more than oil filters for these
cars!

As for price, they run the gamut. I saw a clean DS21 wagon go on EBay
about two years ago for under $4k, low mileage, almost no rust, stored
indoors for a few years.

Last comment on them, I enjoy driving a Citroen more than I enjoy
working on it.

I have only owned 14 heads with over 200K to over 400k miles, all
with no problems. As Marshall said, if they were going to fail,
they would have failed by now. I will happily buy any 14 head car
that everybody else wants to pass up, as long as it has not been
overheated in the last 10-20 k miles.

Alex said OT third H, a 603 car with a known good head; accelerator
and transmission
linkages adjusted by the book; ALDA set properly; the vacuum system sorted
out; and good shocks, springs, and suspension rubber is an engineering
masterpiece that stacks up to just about any car, new or old.

My opinion is that a 300SDL is the BEST car ever made. Again
assuming the engine, trans and suspension is good. buy one that has
a history with it, if you can. They are out there.

All along my recent very tiring trip to FL and back, I was wishing I
could have driven a 300SDL for the trip, or at least any 126 They
are all wonderful cars.

OTOH, Marshall always maintained (and surely with good data to back him up)

[MBZ] 300 SD 722-303 transmission trouble

2008-01-16 Thread Hans Neureiter
My brand new '82 300SD *suddenly* and *with no warning* developed a
transmission problem: does not shift out of first. Reverse and First shifts
are quick.
Since I stuck the Kaleb motor along with a known good transmission (~ 100k
miles) in the car, everything was fine for ~ 10K miles.
The old transmission leaked bad and it happened when the fluid level went
low that it would not shift up.
This time the fluid level is good. The kick-down cable is adjusted correctly
and the modulator vacuum line is plugged in.
Any ideas what went wrong?

Those are neat cars. Cool looking too. For comps, look at UK sites, but
keep in mind the prices will be higher than what can be realized in the
US. For example a comparable SM to what I have will sell for in excess
of 15k pounds in the UK.

Without having the system raised, good luck. The fluid is green and is
known as LHM assuming the correct stuff has been used. Look around the
ram part of the struts for leaks. Also check the reservoir. If it still
has most of its fluid in it, that is a good sign. There should be a
sight glass on the side.

More like a 6.9 than a SLS system. A TD can still be driven over a
railroad crossing without scraping the body on the ground, a DS can't.

The fun part about the Citroen is changing tires. IIRC, you move the
ride height lever (cockpit control) to full high, stick a stand under
the affected corner of the car, and then lower the ride height to
raise the wheel. Not as nifty as the onboard jacks in a Indycar, but
still pretty slick. (when the hydraulics are working)
The brake pedal is something else too. Looks kind of like a
floor mounted dimmer switch from a 1970 Chevy. You push on it and
it doesn't move, but the car slows in proportion to the pressure
you exert. I have a feeling that if something goes wrong with the
hydro system you can't simply stop the car by pushing harder.

All along my recent very tiring trip to FL and back, I was wishing I
could have driven a 300SDL for the trip, or at least any 126 They
are all wonderful cars.

all 603 heads #21 are guilty until proven innocent and should be watched
VERY carefully (and the prices of cars so equipped reduced accordingly).

OTOH, Marshall always maintained (and surely with good data to back him up)
that not all #14 heads were flawed, and that with proper attention to the
cooling system were not something to worry about.

Bob,

I would like to know where it is going if I am using that much. Check the
line from the vacuum pump to the intake. Oil leaks pumped from either the
vacuum pump itself, or the shut off diaphragm on the FI pump, will end up
going
into the engine without being visible. You can put the line in a 2 litre
soda bottle for a few days to watch this.

From add to full is about 2 quarts. Are you remembering to only use the
lower half of this range. Filling to full will likely use the top quart more
quickly.

Slow down! I know that is a boring ride to the site but blowby is a
function of engine load, as we discussed before.
