I'll be switching back to the 380 SL very soon now. Gas prices

 Troy,

I have a 1987 300SDL but it has a leaky head gasket. It's been leaking for
 the last 150,000 miles.

 Other particulars:
Has right at 3000,000 miles on the clock.
New radiator, vacuum pump, alternator, starter rebuilt transmission in
 the
 last 2 years.
Replaced low mileage differential ~4 years ago.
Have replacement headlight lenses doors - NIB.
Needs a IP pump seal replaced.
Salvaged / rebuilt title but it runs drives straight. I bought the car
with a rebuilt title checked it out before purchasing.
 Dark grey exterior, black interior.
 Good tires.
 Seats OK, but complete.
Hit a deer on I24 several years ago. No harm done to the front end sheet
metal. I hit her square in the shoulder and she shattered the headlight
plastic slightly dented the driver door as she spun around. Deer bounce
off SDL's at 80 MPH!!! She was tenderized by the big rig that was
 running behind me.

I've offered the car for trade to the list several times because I've lost
interest in it. Several have been curious but no-one has bit yet. I guess
I'm too honest about the condition of my cars.

 BTW, I'm interested in a 190D, 200D, 220D or a 123 body 240D with a manual
 transmission.

prego again! I asked cops to phone Dad, don't want him to worry as we are
late. Tell him we've been in minor accident with HIS car, nobody hurt. Than I
put vise grips on the stick and drive the poor thing up onto the road and
change blown tire. Cops not too happy but he lets me drive it home.

You should have seen the look on Dad's face when I went into the house and
handed him his gearshift!

[MBZ] VW accidents Was: i see 4 buck a gallon

2008-03-17 Thread Loren Faeth
My 1956 Karman Ghia was hit square on in the right front as I was
slowly crossing an intersection by a 68 Grand Prick 400 four barrel
that a 16 yr old girl nailed the throttle to the floor a block
earlier when I started across the intersection. She was already
going fast when she nailed it on a sleepy residential 25 mph street.

According to eyewitnesses, the Ghia was airborne and slid sideways
into a house mashing the right side. It went about 15 feet forward
and 80 ft sideways. Her uncle, the cop, said I was going too fast
and gave me a ticket, in spite of the law which said a vehicle in an
intersection has right of way over a vehicle entering an
intersection. You don't really expect a cop to know the law do
ya? She said she stopped and I hit her. That makes sense. That is
why the front end of the GP was smashed and the sides of my Ghia were
smashed. That Ghia was slow going forwards, but it sure was fast and
quick going sideways! Right!

When I got out of the hospital, and was able to look at the car and
the situation, I determined: 1) I was lucky to be alive. 2) She must
have been going close to 60. I did the physics later based on the
measurements 3) I believe the Ghia held up remarkably well, crumpling
as it was designed to do, but protecting me even it its advanced
state of tinworm cancer.

I have no experience with beeltes. I do believe the Ghia is well
designed and built for safety, considering it was designed in 1954 or
so. Karmann built good cars.

Re: [MBZ] Todays Accident - Looking for a new car

2008-03-17 Thread Tom Hargrave
I'm already talking to Troy he has the car if he wants it. Kaleb also
shows some interest, so I guess he's second in line. That is, unless he only
wants to give $500.00 for it. ;)

It's in Huntsville, AL and I'm asking 2K. I'd much rather trade it for one
of the Mercedes on my wish list.

 Thanks,
 Tom Hargrave

You can take the settlement buy the car from them have it repaired
 yourself.

No-fault State? If not, whose 'fault' is it? 'cause if it's
not yours you don't re-buy the car at all. You're not dealing
with anybody you have a contract with. No salvage title, etc.
That all only happens if _you_ invoke the contract you have

Re: [MBZ] VW accidents

2008-03-17 Thread Tom Hargrave
Yep, but a VW chassis but not just a floor pan with wheels. It has a strong
perimeter frame designed to absorb energy on impact and a center tunnel
that's even stronger. Then the body bolted on, adding rigidity to the whole
assembly.

With the non-convertible Bug or the Ghia, you are actually riding inside the
frame. VW had to weld an additional set of frame tales to the convertible.

Re: [MBZ] i see 4 buck a gallon diesel today here in atlanta

This is another one where I'll cause trouble...
What is plenty of power? My wife's 454 LTD has 32hp and to my mind is plenty

I *need* to make sure its totally up to snuff (has had some annoying electrical

ready for 50mpg.
She's got a 20 mile daily commute on all secondary roads (nice easy ride) and

Hmm.. I wonder if my wife would ride a motorcycle to work? ;-) Since

Hmmm. would have to be a big enough bike to have plenty of

but not so big she'd have a problem handling it.

Nahhh. She'd like a 125cc to ride around the neighborhood but that's
probably it - course, I would mind having a new Triumph in the garage -

Re: [MBZ] Todays Accident - Looking for a new car

2008-03-17 Thread Harry Watkins
Joe Knight wrote this back in April. His approach paid off.

Finally! Just heard from the Farmers agent from up in the Redding
area. She'd just gotten back from the body shop and has authorized
repairs totalling a tad over $7200, supplements to follow. Anybody
think of anything else I should be asking for beyond direct expenses
and compensation for loss of use? I think it's probably a little late
to bring a chiropractor into the picture. ;(

More history, to which there is a bit of a point if you'll bear with
me. Accident, for which the other driver was clearly responsible,
happened Feb 16. Took 'em quite a spell to come up with any sort of
admission of liability, which came in the form of an offer to settle
and total the car accompanied by a check for $3800 change. While I
was psyching myself up for going toe to toe with them in a legal arena
someone suggested I get the wagon appraised. So, not alltogether
optimistically, I did a little surfing for auto appraisers and came up
with a website for the Auto Appraisal Group, nationwide outfit, that
for the nominal sum of $25 does a thing called a Value Range
Report/survey/whatever. So thinking only that this might give me a
clue as to whether it might be worth my while to spend significantly
more for a full blown appraisal, I filled out the online form and
authorized the $25 and a couple of hours later I had by email evidence
that my wagon should appraise somewhere between $9500 $13500.
Couldn't foresee any problem with passing this little gem on to
Farmers, whose agent had previously suggested I buy my own appraisal,
so I did. Right away, I got a call from them and suddenly they wanted
to buy an appraisal. Few days later the appraiser came out and I
supplied her with the comps I'd been collecting and the Value Range
thingy from AAG and let her do her thing. Next morning came another
call from Farmers informing me they'd decided to fix the wagon after
all when the appraisal came in at $11500. Today's call pretty much
set that in stone so far as I can tell.

The appraised value was arrived at by averaging the listed prices for
which 3 'comparable' vehicles were being offered. The nice appraiser
used two of the comps I'd supplied her, after verifying them I later
learned, and another kind of lowball example, no doubt a rustbelt
beater.Could have been a bit higher but was more than sufficient
to the purpose. Warmed the cockles of my wee heart that Farmers got
to pay $372 for the appraisal only to find they were going to have to
put out what will no doubt turn out to be more than double their
original settlement offer.

So the moral to this story is to keep in mind the potential power of
an independent appraisal should any of you find yourself in a similar
situation and are sure that your local market will support a much
higher assigned value to your ride than what resulted from an
insurance company's internally generated valuation. I suppose that
even if you have to spring for the appraisal youself and it turns out
to support your position you should be able to include that in the
costs for which you are due restitution. Reminds me, I need to
include that $25 in my expenses resulting from this fiasco. :)

Anyone interested in becoming the only guy on the block that can go anywhere

I'm not sure on this one. I've heard that if in searching they find
something illegal that isn't related to the cause of the warrant they
have to get another warrant. I'm not sure if that applies to in plain

Friend of mine has one which he's restored and now rallies. There was a
company over in England, I think it was called Heritage Motors, and the
bought up the old tooling for a number of cars like MG's, Midgets etc. You
could buy a panel, or a complete body, and you just had to trim it our and
add the mechanical bits from a donor car. The saved a lot of cars from
going to the crusher, and if you had serious tin worm, it was probably a lot
cheaper way to go too. Not sure if they offered a Frogeye, but seems they
were adding new models every few years for awhile.

I finished the hash wood trim repair on my car. I let it go a little to long
however go it back good enough. Used the liquid nails adhesive, the previous
owner had something done with what looks like a yell contact adhesive. That
repair was done with the wood trim in place. I removed it for this round.
Where the adhesive squeezed out during the clamping I wiped it. After if got
good and dry, I left it clamped for a few days, I carefully trimmed it with
an exacto knife. Got the thing reinstalled. Am still having a little problem
with the 2 metal screws that go in the center vent that attach with clips to
some sheet metal. Not to worried about this at the moment I think I can take
care of that neat weekend ran out of time on this week end.

After my adventure into the HVAC vacuum actuators in my car I decided to
address the trim wood. It was delaminating from the metal piece glued in
it's center. I have re-glued it with liquid nails and used a 'clamp kit'
from harbor freight. Have more work to do on it but it looks like it will
turn out OK. The little rubber shield around the ignition lock was
cracking off and I plan to use silicon glue and sealer on it. Will know
later how this works out .

Re: [MBZ] Replacing Oil Lines OM 617.951 in 85 300SD

2008-03-17 Thread George Larribeau
snip
Used 2 wrenches on oil cooler as suggested, ground (thinned) a 22MM wrench
mid grade import. Lines on oil filter were a greater challenge. I used a
1-1/16 inch 12 point crowfoot. The lower one was the hardest, very little
clearance near IP ( no I did not move the IP I have not fooled with IP
timing yet, could have marked is position but chose not to fool with it.) It
was very difficult and Messy to remove the old lines and I am now of the
previously stated opinion that I should have cut them off. I was too chicken
to try this but have now learned. Threading (by that I mean routing) in the
new ones was not all that bad. The biggest hassle was the motor mount. I
removed the motor to mount bolts and jacked up the engine however I have
never have been successful at removing the mount to chassis bolt closet to
the engine with out removing the aluminum mount arm that bolts to the motor.
Maybe I did not jack it up enough. I get conservative with stuff like that,
don't want to trash anything. The second biggest hassle was making sure that
the lines were fitted up to the holding bracket near the lower side on the
motor and on top of the AC compressor mount.. Had them tight and found that
I did not like the way they were sitting on top of the AC compressor. Had to
loosen them at the oil cooler a couple of times to get it the way I liked
it.
The old lines were worse that I realized the upper cooler end was loose on
the hose. (I never witnessed the leaking but it was getting harder to clean
it for an oil service.) I shall now see what else oozes ..

Is that because the linkage was worn and it required some special finesse or
are you just saying that people no

The valves will not be OK. You will need to pull the head and have it

I can answer that one. If they find it by accident while looking for
the item(s) listed on the warrant, they are in the clear. OTOH, if the
warrant lists the object to be found as a 300lb woman, they can't look
for her in a shoe box. It's my understanding that the unwarranted search
I mentioned earlier went quite quickly, as they really were just looking
to arrest a broad and not fishing for other stuff. As near as I can
tell, two women posted a plea on the internet for donations to pay
for a lawyer for a custody battle in Arkansas, and that resulted in
feds running around in Michigan looking for one of the women. Gigantic
waste of my/your/our money if that's what really happened.

That's my understanding of it. I don't think my brother was entirely
coherent when they woke him up in the middle of the night, but that's
how he told it to me. It would take a huge load of perjury to get a
warrant for his place, as I don't think he's laid eyes on the subject
in the past five years, and she doesn't know exactly where he lives now.
I think they were just using the arrest warrant and 'probable cause'
to believe she'd be there. If they did that at my house, I'd tell
them that X county prosecuting attorney's office had her address last
summer when she took out a restraining order against her husband, go
talk to them, but I wouldn't let them in.
I'd sooner shoot both of them then let them make an armed home invasion
at my place. I hope I'd have the sense to grab the shotgun with the
flechettes in it if somebody started pounding on the door at 3am.

Yeah, he's asking for trouble, isn't he? OTOH, rust seems to be less
of a problem for old cars here than mildewed interiors. Maybe it's
because we don't ever put salt on the roads, and there's a mountain
range between Portland and the coast so the air itself is not salty.

A Fiat, I think. Weren't there some cosmetic differences---ground
effects on the Bertone cars, or something? This one looks plainer for

[MBZ] Near 4 Dollar Diesel Here in Dallas

2008-03-17 Thread George Larribeau
The web site dallasgasprices.com still lists a station in Allen at 3.69, may or
may not be the true price. Any way that would be about 20 - 25 mile trip in the
wrong direction for me (each way). There are still some at about 3.82 to 3.89
around town, at leas today. Good luck next week.

However right by my house at north Buckner and Northcliff a defunct small gas
station has reopened and is now called something like the green spot. I bought
5% bio blend there for 3.79 / gallon. Have never used that before. They also
sell some kind of straight bo diesel from an above ground tank. B99 ?? Do not
know what the price is. This in my experience is a bit unusual for Dallas. I
talked with the owner for about 10 minutes, interesting guy. I wish him luck
and hope he can sustain his business. I think he also sells organic snacks /
food. I have never dabbled in bio before but 5% is just kind of a 'sales
gimmick right?

My neighbor's son has a 300TD wagon that he run SVO in. (It has a lot of extra
plumbing on it with the Aussi heater block). I ask to see what he thinks of it.

[MBZ] way OT: SCR or triac dimmers

2008-03-17 Thread Fmiser
I am involved with a low-budget theater group (thespians) that
have an old, old follow spot with a monster 1000W lamp without
the proper reflector.

I have a friend who is a wizard with lighting systems. He said
that 410W MR16 lamp will put out as much light as that old 1000W
_and_ have a built-in reflector. But it's 82V, not 120V.

So my first thought was a transformer. But I'm not having much
luck finding a 120V-82V 500VA transformer.

My next thought was a half-wave rectifier. Since the lamp
doesn't really care what the voltage is - just the power
dissipation - I calculations are

410W @ 82V = 16.4 ohms

16.4 ohms @ 115V = 807W

half-wave rectify a 807W AC load should result in 403W. Perfect!

The snag is I don't know how the lighting dimmer is going to
react to a half-wave rectified load.

Any thoughts?

Oh, and I last drove to the theater in my 240D. (token MB
content...)

Re: [MBZ] '79 240D w/broken timing chain

2008-03-17 Thread Loren Faeth
The valves are straight inline with the piston travel. Piston pushes
valve up, valve breaks camshaft and cam bearing(s) engine stops. The
head may or may not have cracks, but 90% you put in a new chain,
guides, tensioner, cam and bearings and it will be back on the road.

I had an OM621 that had that happen. I put in a used cam and new
bearings I had onhand from a prior conversion kit and it was back on the road.

Well if so then its 2 different leaks. On mine, it was leaking from the
c clip area, so I just pulled one off another trans and swapped it in.
Stupid me I didnt replace the big o-ring under the assembly and it
leaked from there. So I had to pull it apart again. Thats the hard
part, trying to get the oring to stay in place while you reinstall it.

A white car also looks dirty 4 seconds after pulling out of the car
wash.

The only thing worse is a white interior (from experience).

I shall ask for records. My youngest girl child told me that the
E320, in
the Polar White, looked like an old man's car. She doesn't think her

needs an old man's car yet, bless her heart.

She's right. A white 210 is about as visually impressive as a bowl of

[MBZ] Battery-charging failure/fix '90 300D 2.5

2008-03-17 Thread OK Don
Last Friday morning the 300D 2.5 wouldn't start - turn the key, and
nothing. The idiot lights were on, the glow plug timer light works as
usual. After three more attempts, it activated the starter, and just
barely turned the engine. It started and ran just fine the day
before, and I never saw the charge light come on. So i hopped into the
240D and drove it to work. That evening I put the trickle charger on
the battery, thinking the problems was either a dead battery from
mechanical failure, or a short or trunk light stuck on, or similar
current draw over night.

I went out to find the problem Sat. noonish - first thing was to check
the date on the battery - 7/2000 on a 72 month Interstate. Seemed
likely that the battery was dead. This car has a shut-off switch
installed between the battery negative terminal and the chassis
ground. I've been thinking it was another point of failure, and didn't
see any value to it, so it's been on my list to be removed when I
replace the battery.

However, it occurred to me that I could connect an ammeter across the
switch terminals, and see if there was a current flowing, when there
shouldn't be, and how much, just by flipping the switch. This was much
easier than puling the battery terminal, etc. So I did, and saw almost
no current (a milliamp or so). The voltage across the battery
terminals was almost 13, so I tried to start it. It started just like
it's supposed to. I went back and measured the voltage across the
battery, and it was still just shy of 13v., even when rev'ing the
engine. H. Next I clipped the ammeter across the shut-off switch,
and still no current. I decided that the alternator was not delivering
electricity to the system, so pulled the alternator.

The brushes on the regulator were short, and one of them had black
carbon burning over most of it's surface. The corresponding slip ring
in the alternator was burned over 80% of it's surface. I figured the
brushes were the cause, and the battery just drained to the point that
it didn't have the juice to turn the starter.

The local Bosch parts store was closed by then, so I decided to try
the McParts stores in town, and order from Rusty if no one had a new
regulator in stock. One store did, so I installed it Sun. and cleaned
the slip ring with an abrasive rubbery disk in the Dremel tool, and
tested again.

Now I had 13.8v. to the battery with the engine running, and 13 amps
flowing into the battery at idle.

The moral of this story is that the shut-off switch was very handy for
trouble shooting the charging/battery system, and a battery that's
almost two years beyond warranty can still function, if charged. So
I'll be leaving that switch in place, and might even add them to our
other cars, should they cross my path. I won';t go searching for them
and make the special effort to install them, but if the opportunity
should present it's self I will.

Re: [MBZ] way OT: SCR or triac dimmers

2008-03-17 Thread Jim Cathey
I have a friend who is a wizard with lighting systems. He said
that 410W MR16 lamp will put out as much light as that old 1000W
 _and_ have a built-in reflector. But it's 82V, not 120V.

I thought a lot of these 82V lamps were like photoflood lamps,
rated 82V but to be run on normal wall voltage. Very bright,
very short life.

So my first thought was a transformer. But I'm not having much
 luck finding a 120V-82V 500VA transformer.

A variac would do nicely as a transformer. But...

The snag is I don't know how the lighting dimmer is going to
react to a half-wave rectified load.

Dimmer? You can't put a transformer downstream of a
solid-state (chopper) dimmer. On the other hand, it
probably won't mind a diode cutting off half the cycles.
But see point 1 above.

[MBZ] Battery-charging failure/fix '90 300D 2.5 continued

2008-03-17 Thread OK Don
To continue the story and ask a question --

I initially thought I was prepared -- I'd purchased a 105 amp
alternator from a list member a while back, thinking that it would be
nice to have when I install a ham radio rig in one of the cars. Since
tha alternator needed work, I figured I'd just replace the stock 70
amp one with this nice big one while I was at it. How ever, the
connectors are totally different, and different in quantity as well.
See the picture -- the one on the left is the 105 - smooth black
plastic rear cover, with two terminal studs/nuts and one slip on
connector, vs. the single plug assembly on the original 70 amp unit.
While there are three connectors in the plug, and three wires, the two
heavy ones are one unit in the alternator, leaving the moral
equivalent of only two wires connecting to it. So - were I to
eventually install the 105 amp alt. into one the 300D 2.5, what would
I connect to the slip-on connector on the back of this alt.???

However, it occurred to me that I could connect an ammeter across the

shouldn't be, and how much, just by flipping the switch.

The correct way to do this is to connect the meter first,
then open the switch. (I'm not saying you didn't do this.)
There are startup loads that get satisfied that way, and you
read only the steady-state draw.

Next I clipped the ammeter across the shut-off switch,
and still no current. I decided that the alternator was not delivering
electricity to the system, so pulled the alternator.

Just make sure you never disconnect the battery from a running
(and good) system, it needs the battery there to regulate voltage.
The open-the-switch trick works just fine so long as you have
the ammeter connected first, and so long as the current it's
then exposed to doesn't blow its fuse or anything.

The big terminal(s) are B, the power output. You'd obviously
need to beef up the wiring to the power consumer. The little
terminal is D, the (initial) field power terminal. It's what's
connected to the dash lamp, and is the small connector in
the stock triple plug. You just need to hook it up, too. I'd
recommend putting in new, different wire to the big alternator,
that way a smaller alternator could be put back in its place
if ever necessary.

Re: [MBZ] Things To Check for on This '97 E320

2008-03-17 Thread Hendrik Fay
Depends on a lot of things, how many people in the car yard, the body
language of the salesperson (are they wanting to make a sale/do they
need to make a sale today).
My advice is to have a look at the car and check out how much business
they are doing and how keen they are to move a car.
If the yard is shockablock full of similar type cars then you may get it
quite reasonably.
They will do the song and dance about how wonderful these cars are and
then you got to put em down with some facts about the 210. Rustbuckets
that eat evaporators and fry engine wiring looms, have these things been
taken care of? If the dealer does a lot of MB's he/she will know that
you are not talking out of your rear end and if those items are a
problem will either do a good deal for you or wait till an idiot walks
into the yard. On the other hand if the evap and loom have been upgraded
and the service history is spot on then it is worth close to asking
price, the M104 is a pretty good engine but the 5 speed autos are not as
reliable as the 4 speeds but the 5 speed is smoother (if it ain't there
is a problem).
I don't think rust should be a problem if it has lived in a sunny
climate but the other two are big ticket items.
Depending on all of the above factors I would say somewhere between 6K
to 7K to get negotiations started, you can always go up.

Re: [MBZ] way OT: SCR or triac dimmers

2008-03-17 Thread George Larribeau
I has been properly covered that you do not feed a transformer with the
out put of a 'chopper dimmer..
However if the question is can you connect a rectifier to the out put of
a stage variac type dimmer, that could be a viable solution. Remember it
could make some EM type noise that could get into sound systems.

If the question is can you connect an rectifier to the out put of a
triac dimmer that could be another can of worms ...a dimer is a 2 wire
device that returns its control through the load. might need something
like a 60w or so lamp as a load for the dimmer and the 1/2 wave load
connected in parallel with it ..

that 410W MR16 lamp will put out as much light as that old 1000W

That is a nice 98. I think the seller is wrong about the transmission.
One of the technicians at the Olds dealership I worked at had two of
these. He kept two spare injection pumps around. He swore that they
had no head gasket/head problems if you changed the coolant often and
replaced the intake gasket every 30,000 miles.

I did have a 1981 Olds 98. It was stolen in Atlanta and the police
found it a few days later. They broke the steering column and started
the
car with a spoon (they left the spoon in the car and the cop showed me
how it worked). I was in college and didn't have the money to fix the
column, so I started it with a spoon for almost three years - until I
ran into a fire hydrant and totaled the car.

P.S. you know how fire hydrants always break off in movies or TV? Well,
I can tell you they do not break off in real life. They have a big ole
steel support pipe that can easily take out a 1981 Oldsmobile 98.
