Just because it has not moved in your car (yet) does not mean

That mass that keeps it in place will turn from friend to

The two post lift leaves a lot more open space under the car than a scissors

Re: [MBZ] Potential engine rebuild

2008-08-22 Thread larry turner
IMHO, The most important part of an engine rebuild is the choice of machine
shops - it *must* be someone familiar with the engine being rebuilt as each
type has its own quirks. Perhaps you can find out something about the MS
and ask some questions. Maybe find out how many of this particular engine
thay have machine'd for a rebuild. Any come-backs? Did they magna-flux
surfaces that are prone to crack? Did they have the nitriding on the crank
redone? Everyone I've talked to says it never works.

Thanks Tom I will keep your suggestion in mind regarding the injectors.
Probably will take them to the injector shop as part of the process. As
 far
as Donalds suggestion regarding a replacement engine, I'm wondering what
that might cost? I recall hearing prices for a crate engine at $6k and up.
Anyone have a line on a used engine? My Indy is very confident in his
rebuilder. Guy charges around $1400 plus parts. Then I'd have to pay my
 Indy
the labor to pull and install the engine.

How much power do you have in the garage now? I have 220 V in mine but only
30 Amps as I ran #10 cable
underground when we built it. Now I wish I had gone with a minimum of #8 so I
could run 40 Amps or more. My welders
want more power. If I try to run at the higher amperages, I blow breakers. The
underground cable is a bit pricy so
it will cost some money to run the bigger line out. My garage is only 40 feet
or so from the house but also a mess
to dig in the new line.

lot more about this than I do! I've never even been to Fiji, but I
hope to go over to attend his wedding next year.

The village has a diesel generator which they don't really use because
they can't afford fuel for it, and don't have vehicles to get the fuel
with. I'm hoping to help them make their own fuel for the generator
from coconut oil either as biodiesel or SVO

[MBZ] AC flushing solvent ?? what is OK ??

2008-08-22 Thread George Larribeau
I have seen different products around auto part stores as AC flush, most are
quick evaporating and fall under suspicion as to their contents. There has been
some discussion here recently about this. One product that in a previous thread
was :

http://www.id-usa.com/product.asp?CID=12PID=41

There has been postings of concern that there could be nasties in some of this
type of stuff that could damage rubber hoses.

I have found to products available from FJC

 http://www.fjcinc.com/fjcflush.htm

2128 / 2031 2406 / 2405

The MSDS sheets:

http://www.fjcinc.com/msds.html

list these as:

2406 - Blend of Aliphatic Hydrocarbon CAS 64742-47-8 99% and 1% top secret.

2128 - top secret with a boiling point of 212F and a Specific Gravity of 1,
sounds like water to me ..

Any one know any thing about these products?? I have a real 2 stage ½ HP
Alcatel vacuum pump. Pulls about 10 milli-tor ( 10 microns). So in theory I
could handle 'water based solvent'

 Ideas suggestions ??

By power, I mean what currently runs from the house to the garage? Is there a

Are there breakers at the house end
that you would use to shut off the power to the garage? That alone would tell

[MBZ] Weird junkyard

2008-08-22 Thread Curt Raymond
If you're ever in north Central MA don't go to Ollie's I190 Auto Parts looking
for a good deal. He's got a bunch of old MBs but he thinks they're made of gold.

I went up there today looking for a hood for my 240D, he's got a couple, 2 are
okay, one has a little rust, two maybe dime sized spots, the other has maybe 3
half dolar sized spots. The third is bent a bit on the driver's side and just a
little rust...
The guy says $100 for the best one, the hood pad is disintigrating so I say
$75, he says forget it. He says he'll make a deal on the bent one, I say $25,
he laughs...
Theres a couple other little things I need, like a shifter surround a buzzer
and a clip so I tell him if he'll throw that in I'll do $100 he says no way...

So I walk.

A buddy is tied in with the junkyard crowd, I should have gone to him first...
He says the guy Bert that runs the place is a no-dicker kind of guy and was the
top salesman at another yard years ago mostly by being a hardass. My buddy
calls but can't get anything, he even tried $80...

Dwight knows a guy with a good hood for $60 in RI which is $20 away. I asked
Dwight to ask about a couple other parts for me, I think Monday I'll head down
there, to hell with Mr. Hardass. Its odd though, I've never been to a junkyard
where the price demanded had any relationship to the price paid before...

want more power. If I try to run at the higher amperages, I blow
 breakers.
The underground cable is a bit pricy so
it will cost some money to run the bigger line out. My garage is only 40
feet or so from the house but also a mess
to dig in the new line.

Also, it requires 220 volts. How big a deal is that? Our garage is

This new technology looks like it would be better for your car's
performance than pumping up your tires, but it might take a bit more
effort. But just a bit of effort to save the planet?

2008-08-22 Thread Rich Thomas
You need some air shocks with those bigger tires, pump them up a bit.
You can buy a rattle can for a buck at the dollar store would do the
aero add-ons. So for maybe $3 for some paint, tape, and a razor knife
you too could make your car faster and more efficient, and save oil for
the future!

The guy says $100 for the best one, the hood pad is disintigrating so I say

Theres a couple other little things I need, like a shifter surround a buzzer

 So I walk.

A buddy is tied in with the junkyard crowd, I should have gone to him

My buddy calls but can't get anything, he even tried $80...

Dwight knows a guy with a good hood for $60 in RI which is $20 away. I asked

MMM's SLC has no EGR now - well that's not totally true - all the
parts were in the trunk. It's a fine running car. The early EGRs were
to cool combustion and reduce nitrides(?) at idle and before warmed
up. You can't compare the emission systems on current cars with those
from the '70's.

2008-08-22 Thread Wonko the Sane
My battery hasn't shifted in (if I remember correctly) four years of 240D
ownership. If I roll the car and the battery breaks loose, its welding
itself to the hood is way down the list of my concerns.

And yes, I have had to do several panic stops. Battery didn't move, or if it
did, the cables rocked it in place (they are not excessively long).

I am not saying that locking the battery down is a bad idea. I am simply
saying that mine isn't and I've not experienced any ill effects.

Re: [MBZ] Live learn

2008-08-22 Thread Tom Hargrave
EGR bleeds some exhaust gas back into the intake which dilutes the
intake charge and drops the peak combustion temperature.

An engine set up to run with EGR will run the same or worse without.
This goes for diesel and gas. Disabling the EGR in a diesel prevents
sludge from building up in the intake. The sludge is a mix of soot from
the exhaust and oil mist from the crank case. Blocking the EGR
eliminates the soot.

Thanks, Tom

My battery will not leave the tray unless the cables (or the battery posts)
break.

If an impact -- or any other sudden, catastrophic vehicular deceleration --
is significant enough to snap those big copper wires or the battery posts,
then I have way more important things to worry about -- like the afterlife.
(I sure hope John Calvin had it right!)

Like I said previously, I've stood max-force on the brakes a few times (when
a car pulled out in front of me) and the battery didn't depart the tray.

Good enough for me.

But, hey -- if you have the clamp on your battery tray, snug it down. I
don't currently have that option and don't plan to spend any $$$ to resolve
that issue.

They can be intermittent for a year or longer, then finally just
refuse to turn. Two options are to pound on the starter via a length
of wood and a hammer, or using one of the manual starter switches
(sold for turning the engine while you're adjusting valves, etc.) that
clamp onto the solenoid terminals to see what's happening.

It has done it long enough one would think if it was the
brushes going out it would have died by now ..

Does the MGA (I lust after one) have two 6-volts tucked in behind the seat
like the '71 MGB does? I shoved a 12 volt battery into my trunk (not tied
down anywhere), strung long cables, and drove the car until the day I sold
it.

I trashed and thrashed that car -- as one should do with an MGB -- and the
battery never even turned over in the trunk.

Just to deflect flame wars, here again is my point -- If your battery tray
has the snug-down, use it. 30 seconds max to attach. Me? My car doesn't have
one and I'm not going to start haunting junk yards looking for the hardware.

I have, however, checked all of my fuses and am using Mobil 1 15W-50.

Re: [MBZ] 1985 300SD Stater interment

2008-08-22 Thread Luther
Quick and dirty starter test. Open the door so the dome light is on,
try to start car and watch the dome light. If it does NOT dim, then the
problem is at the ignition switch or the neutral safety switch. Next
time it happens, try wiggling the gear shift or placing it in neutral.
You might need to adjust the shift linkage, NSS, or install a new NSS.
If the dome light does dim, then first check your battery (probably not
the case here, since it will start later), and then check to see if the
starter is in a bad position, seized, or has a bad solenoid. Sometimes
bumping the car forward or backward while in gear will move it into a
better position.

Does this help?

Ok, got it -- *Diesel varies between 126°F and 204°F.

*Not anything to worry about. It isn't like it is a gasser.

*Once again, if I have an event that moves my battery, I will be too screwed
up in a crash to worry about the battery.

That said, if anyone wants to send me a $2 battery clamp-down piece of
hardware, I will be happy to install it.

By the way, John -- I also drive a motorcycle. I rarely wear a helmet - only
on long rides in 55+ mph zones.

I'm going to worry about diesel burning me up?

Re: [MBZ] Sorry to see this

I am way more likely to die in a motorcycle accident than I am to die due to
an unanchored battery. I am only alive today due to a helmet (catastrophic
65 mph motorcycle crash 7/4/76) but yet still don't grab my Shoei helmet
unless I am riding out of town.

But hey -- what will happen will happen. If I obsessed about how I will pass
away, I'd be on the other side of my work desk and would have to pass myself
psychotropic meds (only OK Don knows what those are) at Monday lunchtime.

Live hard, die young (missed that gate in the hurdles) and leave a good
looking corpse (working daily on that part but gravity is catching up).

Tell you what -- you prep your car and drive it, and I will prep my car and
drive it. If I die due to a loose battery, you have the last laugh. And that
would be very ironic given what I did for a living in the late '70s and my
motorcycle riding habits since.

If I roll the car and the battery breaks loose, its welding
itself to the hood is way down the list of my concerns.

I couldn't care less about the hood or the battery. But
the fire it could start might cause me some concern.

That reminds me: Some years ago I hit a patch of ice with
the Camaro and ended up in a slow rollover off the side
of the freeway in deep snow. (Car teetered a bit, then
flopped over.)

I drove it home, once the oil level was checked. A
fire would have made me much more unhappy, as even
a ruined battery would have.

Is the bolt in the tray still there? It's just a nut
