Personally, I would prefer a blowout to hydroplaning. The rear tires on the CDI are getting close to the wear markers, and I didn't find going down the interstate, sideways, at 70mph to be much fun. It wasn't even raining at the time, and I've driven faster during worse conditions on the same highway without any problems... many times. High tire pressure _prevents_ hydroplaning. By decreasing the contact area, it increases ground pressure and squeezes the water out. And 30 psi is _way_ to low for a high-load tire. A loaded car and a loaded truck are two different animals. For a load range D or E tire, 80 PSI probably about right. The big killer of tires - especially truck tires - is heat. And the quickest way to get a hot tire is the excess flexing caused by under-inflation. So if you have a load on the tire anywhere near it's max, make _sure_ it's not under-inflated. I have had numerous vehicles hydroplane numerous times without a catastrophe. Just like I've had a car slide on ice without turning sideways. I have also experience a couple blowouts. NOT fun!!! I'm with Peter. From my experience, risk from a blowout is much greater than hydroplaning. --Philip ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

The tire is designed for that load. Check with your tire dealers! Also, truck tires (tyres) have a greater pressure margin than passenger car tires. I understand that 50% over-inflated is still within the safety margin for truck tires. We were overloaded, way overloaded, going uphill, closing fast on a chevy pickup pulling an empty stock trailer. He got in the creeper lane, and as we passed, i could see the 454 on the side of the truck, and it sounded like it was grunting to uphill empty. I nailed the 392, opened up the back two barrels and the truck stood up on the ringgear and we accelerated uphill and left the gas sucking 454 in the dust. Those who have ridden an Earles fork BMW will understand standing up on the ring gear. I loved that effect! And we probably went twice as far on a gallon of gas! The load was at least 5 tons. [MBZ] 83 300D fuel starvation
It has been rumored that some of the listers have some knowledge about these cars, below is a question from a very frustrated Ozbenz member, thought I'd ask here to see if anyone has any further suggestions, the thread can be viewed here http://ozbenz.net/viewtopic.php?f=5t=7299p=46313#p46313 Hendrik whose last fuel starvation issue was crap in the pipes As most of you know, my wife and I have several 300Ds. My wife's car (Josephine), an '83 300D, has been losing power on the hill climb which is the highway from town to our home. Normally our 300Ds can manage 80Km/H up this road with no problems. The car runs well downhill and on level ground, but when it is under full power for more than a couple of minutes (when hot or cold), it suffers from fuel starvation. * As a matter of course, the first thing I have done is to replace both the fuel filters - no improvement ! * I swapped the fuel supply and return lines to eliminate a blocked tank strainer issue - no improvement ! * Just to be sure, I have test driven the car using a 10 litre container of fuel in the passenger's foot well and run the fuel lines to it, eliminating the fuel lines and hoses to the fuel tank. - No improvement ! * I have replaced all fuel hoses (some were 10mm where they should have been 8mm - no improvement ! * I have fitted a fuel pressure gauge, teed into the fuel line from filter to IP. It maintains a positive pressure at all times, usually around 0.8 - 1.0 Bar, so I am sure that there is no air being sucked in, or restriction in the fuel filter, after the fuel pump ! * When the engine is suffering this issue, if I turn the engine off, and check the return line for air, it is clear - no air bubbles, even if I pump the fuel pump a number of times, so it is unlikely that there is an air leak on the suction side of the fuel pump. I have also crimped the fuel hose at the fuel tank outlet and pumped, with no air appearing in the pre-filter or return line, even after allowing fuel to flow. * I have swapped the IP (complete with fuel pump) with another from a spare care I have here - no improvement ! * I have pumped the fuel pump by hand and watched the fuel flow from each of the banjos (fuel delivery and return) at the IP, with the bolt loosened and plenty of fuel flows from these locations. * I have used B100 in the tank with no improvement ! * I have used petroleum diesel (the 10 Litre container held diesel) with no improvement ! I am fast running out of ideas on this issue. The engine is suffering from fuel starvation, of that I am sure. I just don't know why, or where it is happening :? What have I missed? Re: [MBZ] 83 300D fuel starvation
If that is the turbo check the vac hose from the back of the intake manifold to the ALDA, clean it out at the manifold fitting and/or make sure it is airtight and hooked up correctly. That provides the overboost signal, if it is clogged it won't allow enough fuel or boost or something, leading to that symptom. It might also be suffering from the counter-rotation of swirl caused by being on the other side of the planet. A properly polarized magnetic turbolizer on the intake manifold and fuel lines would probably cure that.
I'd try the oring on the fuel filter first, then try replacing every hose on the suction side from the tank to the transfer pump, and the transfer pump to the filter. If the line from the filter to the IP was not replaced, replace that also, along with all 4 aluminum rings. My guess is the line from the transfer pump to the filter. If these are 124 300D's then there are the fuel heater lines also. Re: [MBZ] Carfax/ 454 milage
not so We got 10-13 for years and years in 1500s with 304 to 392. the 266 v-8 on a 1500 got 12-13. Pickups get better mileage. I drove one pickup that got 17 if you were careful with the throttle. The 3/4 ton 73 with an 9' van body also got 12-13 for years and years. This over 30years and hundreds of thousands of miles, not a one tank average. They do have to be tuned right. LT Don, Regarding the behavior of your oil gauge bouncing off zero at hot idle, consider a new oil pressure sender. They're about $20, takes 20 minutes to change (on the om603, not sure about the gasser). Re: [MBZ] 83 300D fuel starvation
Well the first thing I would do is clean out the ALDA line from the intake to the ALDA on the IP. If that didnt work, sounds like the turbo is dumping the boost. Dont forget to also check the switch on the firewall that is in the line between the intake and the ALDA, could be plugged or not working. Bypass it for a test. I had a new set so I put them all in but it did not help at all. I am starting to wonder if I have run it low on fuel. I knew I was getting toward the bottom of that tank given the mileage on the trip odometer etc but was waiting for the low fuel light to come on before refilling. I have about 350 miles on the tank according to the trip odometer. I have gone further than that but only in warmer weather with all highway driving. This tank is while it is cooler and has some urban driving so I may not have much left in th tank. I am wondering now if that light may have malfunctioned. So, before I dig any further, I am going to pick up a 5 gallon can of diesel and pour it into the tank. I might even change out the fuel filter as I have never done that in my 4 summers of driving it. I also got some of the small clear filters but the car did not have one originally and I have never put one in so I cannot crawl under and look for fuel or for crud in the filter either. My initial thought was the glow system as I drove the car on Saturday and it ran like normal. I went to help my brother-in-law do some electrical work and install a roof vent in his new garage. That is about 45 minutes away. I drove out there on Saturday morning and the car sat on the street from 10:30 to about 8:00 PM and then started normally and drove fine for 45 minutes home in the dark. Maybe I am lucky that I made it into the garage. I did not use it at all on Sunday and then Monday morning, it would not start. It cranks and it tries to fire and it smokes a cloud out the back but it does not start. Will add some fuel and see if that resolves the problem. My recollection is that it may take a fair amount of cranking if there is now some air in the lines. Nope, the 1994 was pre standard tester days. There is a test plug next to the battery that will allow you to dump the codes stored in the various computer subsystems. There's a built in LED for the check engine light type functions (primarily emmisions) and standard banana plugs for the others. Requires you to wire up a LED tester. Take a scan through the Mercedes Shop forum. There are a couple of posts that list the testing methodology, the home-made LED tester, and all the trouble codes. http://www.mercedesshop.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=107630 Gary Thompson 1995 E320 On Wed, Nov 5, 2008 at 11:59 PM, Tom Hargrave [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Take it down to your local Auto-Zone - I believe they have a tester that will plug in read out for free. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

[MBZ] 115 300D now running
Thanks much to all who offered advice. I believe that I do need to adjust the valves but I also think that will likely have to wait for spring. About all I hope to yet do is to change the oil before it gets stored for the winter. I think it must have been low on fuel. I picked up a 5 gallon can of diesel and poured it in the tank. I cranked it a bit and I pumped the primer on the fuel filter. It took a number of tries over the evening as I kept running the battery down and re-charging it but it finally started last evening about 11PM. I drove it to the local station and filled it this morning and have driven it to the office. I will drive it home at lunch and may not drive it out of the garage again until spring. We are expecting snow and colder temperatures so it is about time to put it away. I guess my low fuel light must be having an issue. It has always worked and I was expecting it to come on. It did not and I guess maybe I went a bit too far before re-filling. Could have been worse. Learned a lesson not to rely on such contraptions. Unfortunately, the guage gets a bit wonky when the level is low too so I may have to rely more on the numbers on the odometer. The many good wishes and prayers are greatly appreciated by both of us. It turns out that the fluttering and kinking seen in my coronary grafts don't seem to be causing much if any problem - though no one can say if it is related to my chest pain. This time my cardiologist did a pressure differential on each side of the [thankfully very healthy] grafts and it shows little difference - 6% drop. Trying a new drug - I might have to get a larger pill case. Either that or the bottom half of your fuel strainer is plugged. I assume the car was parked on the level. Mitch. When I first got my 300SD the previous owner was not driving it much. He put in a new battery in it to sell it. It did all kinds of weird stuff when the tank was on what should be reserve. I replaced the tank screen and had to clean the sender unit. There was all kinds of goo. I put algae killer (from the boat shop) in it for about 3 months before and after the repair. It has been fine ever since. I can now run it to very near empty. The low fuel light now works fine and the screen has not re clogged. Yes, another thing that I have already acquired but have yet to do anything with. I have a box of spare parts in the basement waiting for me. A new bottom half of the oil pan, a transmission filter and gasket, a tank strainer, cam cover gasket etc. All nicely sitting there waiting for me to decide now is the time. I need a nice heated shop to work in when it is cold out and I can't or won't drive the car. Right now, it is outside in the parking lot and we are getting a messy rain mixed with sleet storm. Freezing rain etc possible as it is right at the freezing mark. I just need to get home without some nut running into me. We took the Accord in to have it undercoated and rust proofed with Ming this morning and won't get it back until lunchtime tomorrow so wifey is driving my truck this afternoon and I had to take the MB out into the cold and wet. Re: [MBZ] 115 300D now running
This is a first for me. The light has worked well and I guess that was my downfall. I knew the tank was getting low but was waiting for the light to come on before filling. I did get lucky though in that I drove it home in the dark for 45 minutes and pulled into the garage and then it would not start later. Maybe the jiggling when the vehicle is moving keeps some fuel flowing through whatever guck might block the fuel pickup after it is parked. The garage floor is pretty level so it maybe just would not feed after it sat for a bit. Will keep an eye on it as I suppose it still could be some other problem but I have driven it on several short hops today and it has started fine every time. Now I have the opposite problem as it is not willing to shut off when the weather is cold. I have to open the hood and push down on the tab in order to get it to stop. Vacuum leak that gets worse when the air is colder and the old rubber parts harder. [MBZ] electric trailer brakes
Anybody know anything about these? The ones on my trailer are not doing much of anything. Finally got to get the drum off today on one of them. It has a big magnet attatched to a leaver, that when powered looks like it sticks to the drum, thus pulling a leaver and activating the brakes. On mine, it sticks to the drum, but with not enough power it seems to move the leaver. Anybody know how to fix this? Is there a way to measure power being received at the magnet to see if its getting enough power, or does something worn out need to be replaced? Not a simple matter of adjusting the shoes because the leaver is not being pulled anyway. -- Kaleb C. [MBZ] Back and on the hunt for a W126
Hi Everyone, I'm back after a time away, and on the hunt for a gasser W126. I've looked at a couple, but they were a bit on the rough side, so I passed. I have another 420 lined up for this weekend. I've done some reading on the need to do the chains and tensioners at 100-150K on these cars, so one I find a car that looks good, I'll have a PPI on it. I found one car that is going cheap, but no records. Maybe not the big deal is would be with a W140, which I'm also looking at, but still, after reading about the chains, no records means I'm assuming some work was not done, and would be required ASAP. I'd have a go at doing the chain, tensioner, and guides myself, but it's getting a bit late in the season hear to be out messing with cars. Can anyone help with directing me to a source, or picture of a 420 taken apart to do a timing chain job? One other thing, is the tranny from a 560 the same as that found in the 420? I seem to recall there were slight differences?? By the way, the old W124 gasser is still running pretty good at 345,000 kms. Burning a bit of oil now, but on the whole, still feels really solid. It's going to get a few new hoses, and wires before the weather really turns here. Do you think this is it for bad weather? Make sure you let the engine get good and warm before you really put your baby up for the winter, burn out all the moisture... If they are rusty, or gummed up with old grease or oil, the lever won't apply the brakes. Is there a way to measure power being received at the magnet to see if its getting enough power, or does something worn out need to be replaced? You can measure the current draw on the brake wire, or measure the resistance of the brake coil. I have not measured the brake current draw on my trailer (tandem 6,000 lb axles, both axles with brakes) but I just measured the resisance at 1.3 ohms. That feels a bit high.
