[MBZ] Considering a '73 450SLC - am I crazy?

2009-03-25 Thread David Bruckmann
OK gang, so there's a nice-looking '73 SLC (with the small bumpers) with just
over 100k for sale nearby. The last thing I need is another car, but this one
is basically exactly what I'd like in terms of colour and mileage etc.

As I understand it, the SLC is basically the W114 suspension components. I
already have a W108 with the same engine and transmission. Those seem to be
pretty reliable as gassers go.

So what are the nightmares to beware of on an SLC? Did they adopt the heater
fan placement from the W114? Do the windshields leak? Door seals? I know what
to look for on a 123/126, but I'm not really sure where to start on a 107, let
alone an SLC.

Any tips would be appreciated.

D.

Not being an electrical kind of guy, I did a search for UV lights and was
surprised to see search results were all blacklights.

OK, now I know what we're talking about ;-) So, the UV kills various kinds
of mold, and germs, etc to keep the condensor clean - that''s really a great
idea! Will have to try it.

The filters do nothing to keep germs/mold etc from growing on the evap do
they?

How large/powerful does the light need to be in relaton to the evap?

I have 2 HVAC systems - 1 for upstairs and 1 for downstairs. Trying to
understand how many lights I'll need.

I'll bet having the evap so clean really helps the performance of the
system!

Yes, my bulbs are about four inches from the evap. You can install
everything inside, or do like I did and install the sockets outside and
drill some holes for the bulbs to be inside.

This is where I got mine. A friend tells me you can find them cheaper.

Larry, check out the link I provided, lots of info there. They were also
easy to talk to when I had a question.

Not much electrical stuff involved, I put a male plug on the pigtail and I
plug it into a nearby 115AC outlet. You can wire it into the HVAC, but I
choose not to.

It cleans the whole duct system over time because the air is circulated past
the lights many times in a week.

It cleans the evaporator, not the condenser. Of course with my geo thermal
system they are combined into one. I think with most regular heat pumps,
the condenser is outside.

I have two 16 bulbs for my 1800 sq ft house and that was overkill. I could
have gotten by with two 8 bulbs.

[MBZ] More on 350SD

2009-03-25 Thread Rich Thomas
OK I am still obsessing. Found this official 126 site,
http://www.s-klasse-club.de/gb/index.html wherein it says:

*Diesel:*
The Diesel versions were only produced for the North American export
market. Over here, they are quite rare, therefore we have only limited
information about their performance. Even the best MB workshops
generally do not know how to handle these cars when they require
service. More often than that, spare parts for these cars are sought in
123 spare parts lists, not always the most reliable source. Most 126
diesels in Europe are privately converted gasoline engine versions. We
have to advise against those: Quality of such projects is hard to
describe! Those who are looking for an original diesel should look for
the telltale US markings: Combined mileage/kilometer counter, fat
bumpers front and rear, English text on switches, VIN plate visible
through the front windshield and the characteristic sealed beam
headlights and taillights with integrated running lights. The diesel was
available in three main engine variants: the 5-cylinder OM617 300SD
Turbo diesel (until 1985), the 6-cylinder OM603 300SDL turbo diesel
(only available as long wheelbase version) and the 6-cylinder OM603
350SD turbo diesel. We have to advice against the 350SD because of its
tendency to develop cracks in the cylinder head. Best buy is the 300SDL,
both because of the long wheelbase option and the better performance
(145 HP against 120 HP of the OM617).

So, this car I looked at supposedly had a bad head gasket, this seems to
suggest cracking head could be a problem. Anyone have an (relevant)
opinion? If I got this thing would it be a boat anchor, or if the head
is indeed cracked, would a good one be findable?

Subject: [MBZ] Considering a '73 450SLC - am I crazy?

OK gang, so there's a nice-looking '73 SLC (with the small bumpers) with
just over 100k for sale nearby. The last thing I need is another car, but
this one is basically exactly what I'd like in terms of colour and mileage
etc.

As I understand it, the SLC is basically the W114 suspension components. I
already have a W108 with the same engine and transmission. Those seem to
be

pretty reliable as gassers go.

So what are the nightmares to beware of on an SLC? Did they adopt the
heater

fan placement from the W114? Do the windshields leak? Door seals? I know
what to look for on a 123/126, but I'm not really sure where to start on a
107, let alone an SLC.

Any tips would be appreciated.

D.

2009-03-25 Thread Rich Thomas
Around my neighborhood I see quite a few SELs that are in pretty nice
shape but most have pimp wheels. They are owned by, how would I say
this in a politically correct way, people of color, the Gullah folk who
comprise most of my neighbors.. While the cars are well-taken-car of,
and I relate well to their interest in these fine cars, I just don't get
the whole thing with the pimp wheels. There seems to be a
pre-occupation with flash and bling among the demographic, most of whom
live in shacks and trailers, and have more money in their wheels than in
the bank I am sure. I guess it is just a matter of priorities.

have to give him the PN, since his system doesn't pull it up.

6-cylinder OM603 350SD turbo diesel. We have to advice against the
350SD because of its tendency to develop cracks in the cylinder head.
Best buy is the 300SDL, both because of the long wheelbase option and
the better performance (145 HP against 120 HP of the OM617).

So, this car I looked at supposedly had a bad head gasket, this seems
to suggest cracking head could be a problem. Anyone have an
(relevant) opinion? If I got this thing would it be a boat anchor, or
if the head is indeed cracked, would a good one be findable?

Many SLC body parts are special to only the SLC. Such as glass,
trim bits, etc. May extend to door seals as well. Windshields
are glued in, not particularly prone to leaking but can of course.
107's are rust magnets, so watch out. D-Jet has extra fun, I
don't have one yet but beware of fuel leaks and resultant fires.
(Tend to underhood fuel rubber in other words.) Heater fan is
easy to get to, it's under a hatch accessed from underhood.
For the right price I'd certainly consider one. Fuel economy will
not be great.

One of these days, there will be so few unrusted SLCs left on the planet
that they will actually start to appreciate. Until then, STAY AWAY!

I restored a 1978 SL C, and it was money POORLY spent! Filling the dash
cracks and redying the seats and vinyl dash was no fun, and the dyed
portions of the plastic peeled off :(( These cars rust if you breathe on
them, and the engines regularly need an expensive valve job before 200K
miles, when they start to seriously burn some oil. The fuel economy sucks,
and the plastic interiors are brittle and prone to breakage. The peeling
paint on the rear quarter window louvers are another joy to fix - NOT.

That being said, they are quite distinctive and almost beautiful. If I had
room to store one I would purchase the LATEST possible example (1981 380SL
C) in showroom condition and coddle the hell out of it as an investment. I
would pay up to $15 K for a perfect example with under 100+K miles, fully
documented. To restore a rusty and/or beat up SL C would easily cost
more. My 2 cents.

Can you imagine if somebody tried to condemn a 1978 Chevy for burning oil before
reaching 200,000 miles?
My parents got 145,000 miles out of a 1977 Nova (250 I-6 3sp) and it was still a
reliable car when they sold it. That was considered a minor miracle at the time.
Most people were happy to scrap a car at 60,000 miles and ecstatic if it reached
100,000.

[MBZ] Reviving a w115 300-D

2009-03-25 Thread tom tomscat

Hi,

I swapped out the motor several times on my 1975 W115 300D a few years back. I
was swapping engines between my 1975 and my 1976, and then (long story) I ended
up swapping them back so probably a total of 3 removals and two
installations.

I was given a tip: you don't need an engine tilting mechanism. Leave the
tranny attached, then lift the engine by using a strap around the engine just
behind the oil sump. I used a cherry picker crane hoist. The weight of the
tranny gives the engine an almost perfect tilt to clear the firewall, front end
and front grill assembly. I did it singlehandedly in my garage, and I couldn't
believe how easy it was. The first time it took me less than 10 mins to
maneuver it out. The biggest problem I had was, while moving around the car
checking all the clearances, I knocked over my coffee mug. Twice! :)

I did use a little scissor jack under the tranny for support. And installation
is the reverse of removal, of course. One of the MB manuals---maybe Chilton's,
I'm not sure--- has a pic of the process with the strap attached correctly.
That properly positioned strap made the job a piece of cake.

BTW, I wish I had swapped in the block heater from the '76 to the '75 at the
time, but that remains a project for. manana. Or maybe the day after
manana. :)

I found it easier to attach the tranny outside the car, then install the
whole assembly- AFTER I got one of those engine tilting hoist accessories!

If you have the transmission attached, it will act as a lever to keep the
whole assembly from flopping. You just need to have someone hold the front
of the engine to make sure it stays upright.

pulling the head and checking that out, you're into $2k territory, and
no one is buying anything now, so that would be a crapshoot, then if you
gotta do the whole engine transplant... I don't know, I'll think on it
some more. With a good original engine it would be worth a lot more I
would think, but the market as it is...

Yup - I've done it both ways, perfer the easy way now that I'm old.

When we changed our '82 240D from 4 cylinders to 5, I had the engine and
transmission on the ground and installed a block heater where none had
been before. Then I rigged it up with a chain connected to a hoist and put
it in the engine bay. We had a rope attached to the back of the
transmission that went out behind the car. On a slightly sloping driveway
with the front of the car pointing downhill, a friend and I man handled
the hoist and the front of the engine while Shirley pulled on the rope at
the rear, sitting on the ground with her feet braced on the rear bumper.
It worked OK. But you're right, it would have been easier with one of
 those engine tilting jobbies.

The '86-'87 300SDL with the OM603.961 tends to crack the original head (#14)
if overheaded. I had one with well over 250k miles that was fine.

The '90-'91 350SD and 350SDL have the OM603.97x engine that bends rods, but
has the new head (I forget the number - higher than #17?).

The best combination is a 603.961 engine with the later head from a 603.97x,
or new from Rusty.
I don't think that a car with a known bad engine is worth more than $500
today.

So, this car I looked at supposedly had a bad head gasket, this seems
to suggest cracking head could be a problem. Anyone have an

if it says atf, that should be fine, thats all I have ever used.

One section of the manual says check with your Mercedes dealer and the
specifications section says ATF.

I was asking awhile ago too, and was told it's not ATF, so I'm all
confuddled now.

Yea, I am an idiot. Just found it in a different section of the owner's
manual. ATF.

When I asked on this about our '94 E420, I was told that ATF would cause
the system to leak. I had already put some in because it was already
leaking and I needed to drive it. I guess I should look at the owner's
manual like Don before I repair the leak (it's been sitting awhile now
waiting for some free time and warmer weather).

2009-03-25 Thread Tom Hargrave
Power steering fluid and ATF are almost the same thing in different
packages. ATF has friction modifiers, power steering fluid does not.

You can use ATF in a power steering system but should not use power steering
fluid in a ATF.

[MBZ] W108 4.5 D-jet fuel leak

2009-03-25 Thread David Bruckmann
As if to prove the point made in one of the posts sent in response to my
question about the 450SLC... this morning my W108 4.5 developed a fairly
substantial fuel leak in the rubber hoses on the pressure rail. There had been
some weeping before, but today it became a gusher, emitting a drop of fuel
about every 1-2 seconds from the input line into the fuel rail.

Anyway, no big surprise as this is a known issue with old D-jet cars and is
easy to fix.

Just thought I'd weigh in and say, yes it does happen and it's not just a D-jet
myth!

D.
