Re: [MBZ] 190D fuel filter change

2009-04-17 Thread Zoltan Finks
Ah, good input. I should have posted the question a day or so before I
started the procedure.
(87 190D NA approx 290k mi.)

I actually did not have to loosen or remove the two-bolted bracket I was
referring to. The bracket I meant is the actual assembly that holds the
whole filter deal. But as I said, it turns out I did not have to move it.

As for the stiff vacuum line, I just pulled it forward to pop it out of its
grommeted bracket.

I did have to remove the radiator hose - radiator side - to get filter out.

It slid out pretty easily, with minor spillage.

And shoot! I forgot that filter changing time is the time to administer
diesel purge! I have some from Rusty sitting in the garage.

I cranked for just a few seconds and it came to life, but died. And then I
thought I screwed up by letting off the starter before it was fully running
and, per the manual, it might not start after that. Or maybe that's the 240D
manual.

But I jumped with the battery from the 240 just because I don't like running
my battery down much.

After a few more cranking sessions of maybe 7 - 10 seconds each and
remembering I need to use the pedal to goose it along, it started.

My Big Cam (82) 300 SD with three adults, a dog, and a cram-full trunk
averaged 27.0 mpg running 1600 miles from Iowa to extreme downeast
rural Maine with no cold starts. Average speed including stops to eat,
pee, and walk the dog was 66 mph according to GPS. Much of the time on
the highway, we were doing 80-85. 27 mpg highway is typical, tho
before I adjusted the valves I was getting more like 25. This is with
300+k miles on the clock.

Lowest I've ever gotten in the same car was the return trip, driving
70 into a 30 mph westerly, with two 16' alden ocean rowing shells on
racks on the roof. Their huge wind-catching cockpits, the roof racks,
and the headwind pulled the average down to 22 mpg. In town my milage
is always 24-26, even in the dead of an iowa winter and all short trips.

Re: [MBZ] QRe: Ext HDD, was RE: OT -new computer

2009-04-17 Thread LarryT
There are a couple of ways. I've been fighting this for a while and think I
have found the best solution for me -

which may not be *your* best solution.

Here's your best options (IMO):
1. (What I am doing) - Using a new 500GB Hard drive (~$100) for my laptop
(I could use the 250GB HD that came with the laptop but this gives me more
room I can use the smaller HD as a ext HD) , I will install Vista with the
Recovery Discs, then install XP on a seperate partition. I will use a 3rd
partition for my data files. This is the best solution because I don't have
to find the HD Driver (and others) for my new Toshiba laptop. Problem is, a
XP driver for my Toshiba components may not even exist! You'll need 3GB for
XP and 20GB for Vista. Since I have data on my 250GB Hard Drive I'll use a
HD Docking station I have ($30) to copy/share files between the 250 500
HDs.

2. Here's another less desirable (IMHO) option. On a seperate PC, download
nLite (free) software. Locate the HD driver (and drivers for all other
components in your new computer) and place them in a temp folder on your
borrowed PC. Run nLite which will use your XP install discs to place a copy
of XP Installation on your borrrowed PC. nLite will then integrate the
drivers into the files of the XP installation folder. Now you can copy the
new XP files containing the drivers onto a CD. Use that CD/s to install XP
on your computer and hope you have the correct drivers.

It's more complex to describe than to do but the problem is still finding
the proper drivers. I started to try this but feel the 1st option will be
more likely to work.

Using option 1 you can start up on Vista then switch to XP once the computer
is running. This is called a Dual Boot System and is very common. \

If you do figure out how to get back to XP let me know. My daughter has a
new HP laptop that she wants to go back to XP on. Problem is HP doesn't
provide any drivers for the computer that will work with XP. Since she
uses the computer for relaxation (games). Linux won't work because the
games she wants to run won't run on Linux. or is there some way to install
XP in Linux and have the Linux drivers run the computer? How much would
that slow things down because she has the games turned down to medium to
low detail just to run them now. Any slow down and you might as well
forget about playing.

Hi Tim -
Thx but no thx - it sounds too complicated for no improvement in
performance. You didn't mention if it would improve security but I doubt
it,.

You're right about the configuration - presently the Ext HD is shown as a
drive in the desktop. And when on the desktop I see it like that - it
shows the 2 HDs in the puter and the 3rd as C, D, E F and H as the ext.
I
use software called Network Magic which makes things nuch easier to set
up.
I had tried unsuccessfuly to set up the LAN so I could print (printer
hooked

to desktop) with the laptop - followed the instructions but still it said
No! But NM configured it perfectly. Until my new laptop added Vista to
the
mess. But that too can be fixed. once I get rid of Vista and install
XP

A fully patched and updated xp copy takes something like 7.5.to 8 gb,
so IMHO, it takes at least 10 GB for XP without a lot of
software. In practical use, i consider 20gb to be the practical min
drive size whether you are using 2000 Pro, xp Pro, or Wissta.

When Wissta was released, Fully updated and patched 2000 Pro, XP Pro
and Wissta all took about 7.5 to 8 Gb of storage. I found that to
be quite interesting. considering they are all built on the 2000
code base, i didn't find it surprising. I just retired a workstation
that originally had 2000Pro installed og a 4 gb partition, which was
plenty of space. Then i had to replace the drive with a 10 gb
partition for the OS, then I had to replace the OS partition with
20GB to handle SP2 and the software I had installed.I don't
believe it is wise to run unpatched MS software.

which may not be *your* best solution.

Here's your best options (IMO):
1. (What I am doing) - Using a new 500GB Hard drive (~$100) for my
laptop (I could use the 250GB HD that came with the laptop but this
gives me more room I can use the smaller HD as a ext HD) , I will
install Vista with the Recovery Discs, then install XP on a seperate
partition. I will use a 3rd partition for my data files. This is
the best solution because I don't have to find the HD Driver (and
others) for my new Toshiba laptop. Problem is, a XP driver for my
Toshiba components may not even exist! You'll need 3GB for XP and
20GB for Vista. Since I have data on my 250GB Hard Drive I'll use a
HD Docking station I have ($30) to copy/share files between the 250 500 HDs.

2. Here's another less desirable (IMHO) option. On a seperate PC,
download nLite (free) software. Locate the HD driver (and drivers
for all other components in your new computer) and place them in a
temp folder on your borrowed PC. Run nLite which will use your XP
install discs to place a copy of XP Installation on your borrrowed
PC. nLite will then integrate the drivers into the files of the
XP installation folder. Now you can copy the new XP files
containing the drivers onto a CD. Use that CD/s to install XP on
your computer and hope you have the correct drivers.

It's more complex to describe than to do but the problem is still
finding the proper drivers. I started to try this but feel the 1st
option will be more likely to work.

Using option 1 you can start up on Vista then switch to XP once the
computer is running. This is called a Dual Boot System and is
very common. \

there some way to install XP in Linux and have the Linux drivers

[MBZ] OT - IBM Working to Integrate ALL Med Records

2009-04-17 Thread LarryT
Just saw a disturbing TV commercial (History Channel) where dozens of white
robed technicans talk about what they are working on. Seems they want to
create a huge database that puts medical records, insurance records,
hospital records, etc etc where *everything* talks to everything else!
Don't know about you, but this doesn't sound like the greatest idea. Sure,
it may make the insurance business more profitible, but at the expense of
patient privacy! We've had a regular diet of reports of credit card
information being lost or stolen when hard drives are given away, lost or
stolen. That's *very* bad. But medical records being out there for all to
see is even worse IMHO.

Yet here they are, all those IBM technicians proudly boasting they are
working toward the goal of total integration of

your life's total body of information.

Am I being too paranoid? I mean, I don't have to worry about finding a job
anymore, but someone with a family history of heart disease or cancer may
not get hired if that info is readily available.

It seems the govt wants to eventually create an electronic record of each
person in this world -- driving records, working reccords, health records,
tax records, family records, - everything. Sure sounds like 1984 to me.
Loss of pivacy is one thing - having faceless bureaucrats crawling through
every facet of my families' life is not something I want happening. It may
surprise you to learn they're not ALL honest.

The computer has brought us great convienence but it has the ability to
cause great harm also.

It seems the govt wants to eventually create an electronic record of

[MBZ] The Autobahn on History Channel

2009-04-17 Thread LarryT
The History Channel runs a series called Modern Marvels - the program
called Autobahn which will be on again this evening (Fri) at 7PM Eastern
time.

The opening has a RUF Porsche 911 going to the limit - evidently German
tuners must certify the top speed advertised will actually be met.

Hmm.. where do I apply? ;-)

They also have video of a SL flipping over several times from high speed.
When the Mercedes stopped rolling the occupants crawled out and staggered to
the nearby hill.

Anyway - they go over the history and construction of the highway as well as
the controls in place and police coverage. BTW, tickets are based on the
drivers income. (So, I guess poor people can drive really fast and pay
really small tickets?) ;-p

It's a program well worth watching -- IMO at least.

I agree that 20 Gb is a practical Min size for Windows OS. 7.6 GB
for the install leaves less than 25% free space on a 10 gb partition,
and is a ticking time bomb. There are clever ways to do minimalist
installs, but that is another matter and not for the faint of

minimal installs.

I did not say I agreed with it, I just stated where things are going.

There are benefits.

What if you have a chronic condition - let's say congestive heart failure,
you are traveling and have an accident. You are hauled into the ER and they
have to know what medications not to give you. For example, if they give you
the wrong stuff, you could die in the ER from heart failure or internal
bleeding.

With an on-line system, the attending physician can pull up your records and
adjust your treatment accordingly.

A new, fully charged battery should read 12.7-12.8 no load. At 12.3 it's either
half charged or seeing a bigger draw than the clock and the radio memory should
put on it. 13.5 charging is a bit low, but the older MBZ had their voltage
regulators set low, I think 13.5-14.0 is normal.
When estimating to a tenth of a volt, you're using the mirror on the meter to
eliminate parallax error, right?

Hmmm remember the Va Tech shootings 2 years ago yesterday? The govt
claimed they had no knowledge of the killers mental state and thus had
allowed his firearms purchases to go thru.

So, now they are asking for more power to collect medical records to use
during firearms purchase background checks.

Doesn;t sound like they're being completely honest. I guess that's par for
the course. Now you know why I am so much against additional firearms

I did not say I agreed with it, I just stated where things are going.

There are benefits.

What if you have a chronic condition - let's say congestive heart failure,
you are traveling and have an accident. You are hauled into the ER and
they
have to know what medications not to give you. For example, if they give
you

the wrong stuff, you could die in the ER from heart failure or internal
bleeding.

With an on-line system, the attending physician can pull up your records
and

adjust your treatment accordingly.

Once you;re sure there's nothing in the Windows folder you need, you can

Subject: Re: [MBZ] QRe: Ext HDD, was RE: OT -new computer

Just saw a disturbing TV commercial (History Channel) where dozens of
white robed technicans talk about what they are working on. Seems they
want to create a huge database that puts medical records, insurance
records, hospital records, etc etc where *everything* talks to everything
else! Don't know about you, but this doesn't sound like the greatest
 idea.

Sure, it may make the insurance business more profitible, but at the
expense of patient privacy! We've had a regular diet of reports of
 credit

card information being lost or stolen when hard drives are given away,
lost or stolen. That's *very* bad. But medical records being out there
for all to see is even worse IMHO.
