Re: [MBZ] Shakin' and bakin' W123 300 turbo
I replaced the longer fuel line to the inline fuel filter. It turned out to be aged and cracked. Result: no more shaking! On Thu, Aug 13, 2009 at 9:06 PM, Peter Frederick psf...@earthlink.netwrote: Adjust the rack dampner bolt. Be careful, as adjusting until you have perfect idle can cause it to refuse to start cold from inadequate fuel delivery. Eventually, you will have to just live with the shake as the spring continues to degrade The 5 cylinder shake is longitudinal, which may appear to be side to side, and the most common cause is a worn rack return spring which allows the rack to oscillate in time with the engine vibration. That causes uneven fuel delivery, making the side to side action. The real cure, of course, is to take the IP completely apart and replace the spring, but it takes a full rebuild to get to it. [MBZ] W123 brakes
My braking has gotten noticably uneven and a bit grindy sounding. It seemed to start after the car had been sitting for a few weeks; initially I assumed it was just rust on the rotors but it never really evened out after I started driving the car again. There's also some noticable pulsation in the pedal. Less than two years ago I put on new front rotors. Also new calipers, pads, and hoses all around. Parts from Rusty. I don't recall the brand of pads but I would guess they were Pagid or maybe PBR. The pads appear to have about 1/4 or so of material remaining. Looking at the front rotors, the pads don't seem to be engaging much on the outer third or so of the diameter. This is more pronounce on the left than the right. Could this be due to improper or lack of shims under the pads? The rears I think need new rotors at this point. They are fairly worn and have some pronounced ridges on the outer half. From what I can tell, I should be able to tap these off the hubs once the wheel and caliper are removed is that right? Any recommended brands to use for these? The web site lists Balo, PBR, ATE, or Brembo. I'm thinking of putting on new Akebono pads all around, despite the extra expense. Comments? Quick backstory for those who might have forgotten. 92 300SD, been using oil for a while, no big smoke but you can smell it from time to time. Started using cooling maybe 6 months or more ago. Been getting worse to the point it uses about as much coolant or more than oil. Probably have to top it off once every couple of weeks. About the same with the oil. Anyway, Top radiator hose does not seem to get real hard like some of them do, as was discussed before. There is also quite a bit of oil seeping out from somewhere near the front passenger side, above the alternator area. Hard to tell where its coming from. So today, I pulled the manifold to do compression check. Seems like some oil in the #1, #2, and slight bit toward #3 area of drivers side head. Here are the numbers #1 410 #2 430 #3 420 #4 450 #5 440 #6 415 Also, the number 1 glow plug had a little bit of a white crust on the tip (see pic) maybe its burned coolant? So, I am probably going to have to pul the head. First of all, would a compression check even turn up bent rods? If so, can you tell anything from my numbers? #1 and #6 are the lowest, but dont seem real low to me, still seems like good numbers. -- Kaleb C. Re: [MBZ] do I have bent rods?
Kaleb: Bent rods in a 603 almost always result in extremely rapid cylinder ovalization, accompanied by huge amounts of oil smoke, clanking pistons, and other assorted noises. This is because the rods almost invariably twist and set the piston off axis in the bore. That wears the bore oval in a matter of minutes, hence the sudden extreme oil consumption. We are talking quarts an hour, with the smoke you'd expect.A totally blown out turbo will do the smoke thing, but no running issues or sounds as it is dumping copious oil into the intake AND hot exhaust. Coolant loss with moderate oil consumption, especially if there is oil in the coolant, indicates either a cracked head or a blown head gasket. Since you have normal compression in all but #1 and #6, I would suspect a bad head gasket, as they fail first on those two cylinders and between #3 and 4 or 56 for some reason. Could easily be a cracked head, though, as cracks between the valves do not lead to oil passages and the coolant gets sucked into the combustion chambers. Considerable white smoke and rough running cold are clues to that. Oil consumption can come from leaks at front seal, head gasket at chain case, chain tensioner, bad oil filler cap, and turbocharger, both from leaking lines and from bad internal seats. I'd pull the head myself, as a bad head gasket will eventually leak oil into #1. There is an oil passage machined in the face of the head across the front, and new head gaskets are metal re-enforced there, but they can still leak. Eventually there will be enough oil in there to bend #1 rod. The gasket will also leak combustion gasses out into the bolt holes, making it hard to get the bolts out. BTDT. We saved my brother's SDL because an exhaust repair caused us to discover a broken exhaust stud, hence head removal. Car ran fine, but it was leaking oil into #1 from a dead gasket. Kaleb, I do not have direct experience with this engine, but I can say that from the years of diesel experience I have (and gas, for that matter as well,) that the numbers you posted are all within 10% of each other, meaning that more likely than not there is no rod, piston or bottom end problem. For that matter, I'm willing to bet you just have a leaky head gasket between a pair of the cylinders and coolant is seeping into one of them. Might only happen when it's cold, possibly. I don't think there is anything significant going on here in my opinion. You'll get the full story when the head is pulled, but I still wouldn't expect a major failure IMHO. Problem is that around here almost every bonehead that has a IH engined pickup or a cummins engined pickup, put in the chips, over fuel them and put on loud pipes. Re: [MBZ] 220D Head Removal
No Way! it would be easier to put a 123 OM 616 or 617 in the 115. major problems are flywheel/trans mating; oil filter and motor mounts. Of those, the motor mounts are the easiest. THere is probably a factory set of motor mount arms somewhere that will bolt in, or can be mounted on 2 of the 4 motor mount bolts, and one additional bolt fore or aft that just happens to already be there. To install the 123 616 into the 110 chassis, we made a cover plate for the oil filter, and the block, where the filter mounts. then we could mount the oil filter remotely, and connect the 2 plates via hoses. Actually, I think you could take your 615 block and use all 616 components to rebuild it. I thought about trying that with the OM 621. THen the block would bolt in, and you would have a 616 in all other aspects. I think you could also use the 615 crank and flywheel assembly, so the trans end would bolt up too. bear in mind the last paragraph is speculation. the 616 in 110 transplant, I did At 03:44 PM 8/12/2009, you wrote: Can I put a 615 motor into a W123? So Hursty, I propose changing your statement a little. This list would not have existed without Alex Gabbard, and Herr Doktor and the Diesel list would not have started without Dr. Booth. After dickarde smoked a few too many and melted down, Kaleb picked up the pieces he found, and put together one list, much like the original veterans list, but without most of the international members. (Yes, we have Bennell, whom I appreciate even if he is a lawyer and one errant lost Aussie, but the Veterans had a whole raft of Aussies, including Greene, who was no slouch on technical stuff, and Frada, who was a hoot) Then there were Gabbard and others from Europe, an occasional Indonesian and a few South Africans, so it gave us a perspective of Air, Land and Sea, the world around I still miss the veterans list, but I consider the character of this list to be essentially the same as the original Mascedes-veterans list. That is a hilarious history. SO is the VM what is in the Diesel grand caravans in you-rope? I'd sure like to sneak one of them into this country! I really wanted a 2007 Bluetec Grand Caravan that was reported in 2006 as a fact. (until the big divorce got public) I would really like the DB Bluetec engine in a grand Caravan. Ya gotta excuse my ignorance (about VM) and prejudice for OM series Diesels from DB or whatever they call themselves the past few years. I have been driving and working on those engines for 30 some years. I have never even seen a VM diesel, and I never heard of it until the liberty came out. This list would not have existed without Alex Gabbard, and Herr Doktor and the Diesel list would not have started without Dr. Booth. After dickarde was successful in starting the Diesel list, it siphoned off members like me and OK Don, who was then known by his real name, from the veterans list. THe 108 list siphoned off more members of the veterans list. each subsequent list siphoned off members from the veterans list. I have not heard from him in a while, but he's still floating around up there in the mountains. I am going up there in a few weeks, may look him up. Yep, thanks kleb for the list service. I'm almost positive that the Liberty is the first stateside VM engine. But, as I said in the previous post, they appear to be well respected in Europe. Toyota, Rover and Jeep all using them in off road applications. But `Mericans hate Diesels. They don't last any more than 30,000 miles. Just ask anyone who's daddy owned a Diesel Caddy. Re: [MBZ] Hursty's list history
Dickarde would never have started any other list had he not decided to host the veterans list. He was hosting the Veterans list on MBZ.org before there was a banned list or a Diesel list. You rejects from the RE list would have just found some other sap to host banned had dickarde not been already hosting. The fact that veterans existed on mbz.org before banned or Diesel is relevant to everyone but you! By your logic, the banned list was simply hosted and the Diesel list was simply hosted too. The flavor of this list is still much like the Veterans list. It is not Banned, and it is not limited to Diesels. Some of us have to put up with a few vergassers in the fleet, and some others only have vergassers. When Alex got tired of administering the list, dickarde, seeing a potential to rake in rapacious fees from Hursty, started up mbz.org, and grew it into several lists, veterans, Diesel, 108, banned and more We are talking about 1998 or so here, when dickarde took over administering the veterans list, then migrated it to mbz.org I am not sure of the timing of those banned form the R/E list, as I was only a member of the RE list for a short while. My impression was that it was after dickarde had already moved the veterans list to mbz.org. Re: [MBZ] Power antenna relay on 1985 300CD?
Why/when would you want it at half-mast? On an SL, in particular, they whistle noticeably in the wind. Raising them only the necessary amount for good reception is nice for those. Also, not raising them the full amount extends their life to some extent, and reduces the vulnerability to damage. I suppose there are also multipath scenarios in cities, but I've never run into those. The power wire for the antenna was not plugged into the correct jack on the radio. The antenna plug has 4 pins but doesn't function as it should. The three-wire antenna has a four-wire-plug adapter cable, so it can plug in place of the correct (NLA) antenna. But it ain't right (IMHO). -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] W123 Aux Fan Switch Location and testing?
I am hoping someone can help. The aux fan in the wife's '79 DT does not seem to be working correctly. If I knew where the thermostatic switch was, I guess I could short across the leads to test the fan and the switch, but I am clueless as to its location. It's on the AC receiver/drier. It only comes on (IIRC) if the AC gets hot enough in operation. Nothing to do with engine temp. It's a 123 thing.
