Can't help with the spring questions but you comment about flaring, basically the engine spins before it goes through (I think) 1-2 and 2-3, IMO Flaring is when the clutches do not completely engage quickly - you are basically slipping the clutch as it shifts - to put it in Manual Tranny mode - But that may be what you meant by engine spins ? I use the rattle-wrench to remove and tighten the alternator pully nut. I've had one (FLAPS-branded) rebuild come with a keyed shaft; the Bosch rebuilds don't in my experience. Normally you just get a little vrrr as the engine revs up a little for an instant during upshifts---that condition can often be cured by proper modulator adjustment, a fluid change, and running a while with synthetic ATF. But the best cure for what you're describing, Tim, is often one of Rusty's rebuilt trannies installed by a competent shop (or on your own, if you have the right equipment). I do remember there was quite a difference in performance with a full load, and empty. Deliver the cargo, and then hightail it home. Pretty slow target on the way to work though, as I remember. I need to do the diagram of y=f(x), while explaining what that means, with x,y and (x+deltax),(y+deltay) on a curve and show how as deltax and deltay approach 0 the slope between the two points becomes the tangent to the curve, which is dy/dx. Most of the books have that, but until you really show someone they have a hard time understanding it. Much more typical, en route cruise for a B-52 is at 35 or 37 kft (easily go much higher); IAS 238 kts, MACH .77, 444 kts TAS; combat cruise at 250 kts IAS, mach .82, 470 kts TAS. Easily go significant faster. I've seldom known a B-52 to stay at 25 kft long. I had an uncle who flew in a Lanc during the war...rear gunner. The guy had lots of stories, some great, some not so great. One mission, the plane was pretty shot up, and the floor of the rear turret was shot out. As he tells it, he had his legs dangling out during the flight home. Flying over the water and looking down, he told me he kept thinking, higher, higher! I also have a friend who flies. He too can't get on a chair to change a light bulb, but no problems flying. Doesn't seem to be that uncommon amongst pilots. Re: [MBZ] B-52 was: 07 R320CDI with 320259000meters
My Dad was a flight engineer in a B-29 based on Guam and later Tinian. It was outfitted as a photo reconnaissance plane, with a tail gunner and possibly no automated turrets (not sure about that.) They flew daytime sorties over Japan and the islands to gather intelligence and document the results of the previous night's bombing raids. He said it was noisy and frighteningly cold, and since they normally flew without escorts, the Japanese left them alone. This meant that the tail gunner, Gene Nelson, would be all the way in the tail of the plane, bored out of his mind. To combat the boredom, they played chess over the intercom No ordinance on these birds, just a huge pallet in the bomb bay with very, very large cameras. I put a hex key socket/impact wrench on the shaft end, and a box end on the nut. Got it up pretty close to 80 ft/lb and stopped when (cheap) allen key in end of shaft began to strip. Think maybe the 4 year old battery is bad since the cell hydrometer readings won't go up after charging a few hours. Getting a new battery this PM. Thanks, Gerry From: Dieselhead 126die...@gmail.com Yeah, I went through the same thing. The answer was to just put the pulley on and tighten the nut. Your number of 80 is about right. I got mine as tight as i could, and it has been ok. From: Allan Streib str...@cs.indiana.edu I use the rattle-wrench to remove and tighten the alternator pully nut. I've had one (FLAPS-branded) rebuild come with a keyed shaft; the Bosch rebuilds don't in my experience. Doesn't seem to really matter in practice. Re: [MBZ] B-52 was: 07 R320CDI with 320259000meters
BTW, several years ago, at a local air show, I was kneeling down at the forward end of the open bomb bay doors of a B-17 and peering up into the bay when one of the crewmen walked up and asked, What do you think? I immediately said, Small, very small. I immediately realized that I'd better be careful not to insult somebody else's air plane, and quickly went on to say, I'm a B-52 guy, and comparatively, the bay is shockingly small, but they certainly did a fantastic job for us over Europe and wherever they were in service, and I thank God for them and the tough, brave souls who flew them. [MBZ] OT: Bought a new computer monitor
My wife wanted the 17 LCD from home for her office to replace her 17 CRT so I bought a new monitor for home. We watch most of our TV online and I figured it made some sense. For ~$180 I got (from Amazon of course) a Viewsonic 24 LED. From the reviews I read it seemed like a good deal and I've had a Viewsonic monitor before that I liked. This thing is HUGE for a computer monitor, 1920x1080 (full HD) gives me plenty of desktop real estate. I've been steadily turning the brightness down so it doesn't burn my eyes out. Down to 35% now, might go to 30% yet. The screen is clear and sharp and the whole unit is very thin (maybe 1 1/2) and weighs nothing. Supposed to use very little energy too. We'll see how it lasts over time but so far I'm pleased. -Curt ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

I've got 2 spares, one from Hammie the '83 240D (RIP) and one from a junkyard unit. Both have some kind of cable that gets payed out of the unit as the fan speed is raised. Anybody know what its for and how to correctly connect it? In both cases for removal I just pulled and twisted until the existing cable either came off or broke. Re: [MBZ] Tranny questions
I put one of Rusty's ATs in last summer (by local shop) and must concur - they are awesome with great prices. I may have mentioned this, but my local MB Dealer was willing to install a outside vendor's rebuilt AT just like the local Indy did (but the dealer wanted $1250 Vs $650). When I was talking to Rusty about the AT he said he'd sold thousands over the last ~20 years and had only 3 problems!! That's incredible! 2 of the problems were the fault of the installer and the other was something external that could be easily repaired. All 3 problems were minor BTW. When I asked the rebuilder what kind of ATF to use he said Dexron III. I was hoping to use M1 ATF but went with the rebuilder recommendation. They also say to use 24K ATF change intervals Vs 30K that MB says to use. Re: [MBZ] Tranny questions
Pretty certain that the K1 spring kit is only for 722.3/4 trannies and only fixes the 2-3 flare. Have no experience with the 722.1 boxes but flaring can be caused by a slow change over, worn clutches, brake band 2 sticking and perhaps low operating pressure. At this stage I would suggest that a rebuild is not in order but a look inside the pan to see if there are metal particles is in order. I have had good success with Fuchs titan D3 semi-synthetic ATF. Modulator adjustment is related to all gears and while adjustment will mask a problem it does not fix it. Shift timing is determined by control pressure, nothing to do with the modulator. You really need to find someone who is an expert on these boxes and will not just tell you that you need another box. However, this leaves me with two questions: a) How likely that I did permanent damage? I guess I was telling the transmission I was always at WOT? Not really sure what the vacuum valve is doing in practice. [Fluid was replaced 8-10 months ago, I'll do it again soon anyway since I have a slow leak I want to track down.] b) Why would it shift early with a pushrod that was too long? Seems like it should be the other way. *I think it's flaring, basically the engine spins before it goes through (I think) 1-2 and 2-3, especially if I'm accelerating above 40%.
