Re: [MBZ] Tranny questions

2012-01-27 Thread Larry T

Can't help with the spring questions but you comment about

flaring, basically the engine spins before it goes
through (I think) 1-2 and 2-3,

IMO Flaring is when the clutches do not completely engage quickly - you are
basically slipping the clutch as it shifts - to put it in Manual Tranny mode -

But that may be what you meant by engine spins ?

2) My transmission is flaring* and yesterday I realized that, after
adjusting the accelerator throw some months ago, I didn't adjust the
pushrod to the transmission's vacuum valve. I shortened the pushrod a
bit, and it is a bit better. I am hoping the trend will continue as I
make it shorter...

However, this leaves me with two questions:
  a) How likely that I did permanent damage? I guess I was telling the
transmission I was always at WOT? Not really sure what the vacuum
valve is doing in practice. [Fluid was replaced 8-10 months ago, I'll
do it again soon anyway since I have a slow leak I want to track

  b) Why would it shift early with a pushrod that was too long? Seems
like it should be the other way.

I use the rattle-wrench to remove and tighten the alternator pully nut.

I've had one (FLAPS-branded) rebuild come with a keyed shaft; the
Bosch rebuilds don't in my experience. Doesn't seem to really matter

Sounds like a really ghastly case of flaring. Normally you just get a
little vrrr as the engine revs up a little for an instant during
upshifts---that condition can often be cured by proper modulator
adjustment, a fluid change, and running a while with synthetic ATF.
But the best cure for what you're describing, Tim, is often one of
Rusty's rebuilt trannies installed by a competent shop (or on your
own, if you have the right equipment).

I used to help out at a local aviation museum here. We were restoring an
old Lanc. I remember reading the performance figures at the time back
then, but can't remember them now. I do remember there was quite a
difference in performance with a full load, and empty. Deliver the cargo,

I need to do the diagram of y=f(x), while explaining what that means,
with x,y and (x+deltax),(y+deltay) on a curve and show how as deltax and
deltay approach 0 the slope between the two points becomes the tangent
to the curve, which is dy/dx. Most of the books have that, but until
you really show someone they have a hard time understanding it. Once
they get it, the rest is sorta easy, just learning some rules about
finding derivatives and such.

I had an uncle who flew in a Lanc during the war...rear gunner. The guy
had lots of stories, some great, some not so great. One mission, the plane
was pretty shot up, and the floor of the rear turret was shot out. As he
tells it, he had his legs dangling out during the flight home. Flying over
the water and looking down, he told me he kept thinking, higher, higher!

I also have a friend who flies. He too can't get on a chair to change a
light bulb, but no problems flying. Doesn't seem to be that uncommon
amongst pilots.

Re: [MBZ] B-52 was: 07 R320CDI with 320259000meters

2012-01-27 Thread Dan Penoff
My Dad was a flight engineer in a B-29 based on Guam and later Tinian. It was
outfitted as a photo reconnaissance plane, with a tail gunner and possibly no
automated turrets (not sure about that.)

They flew daytime sorties over Japan and the islands to gather intelligence and
document the results of the previous night's bombing raids.

He said it was noisy and frighteningly cold, and since they normally flew
without escorts, the Japanese left them alone.

This meant that the tail gunner, Gene Nelson, would be all the way in the tail
of the plane, bored out of his mind. To combat the boredom, they played chess
over the intercom

No ordinance on these birds, just a huge pallet in the bomb bay with very, very
large cameras.

I put a hex key socket/impact wrench on the shaft end, and a box end

Think maybe the 4 year old battery is bad since the cell hydrometer

Yeah, I went through the same thing. The answer was to just put the

Try dumping some of that cargo in the bays, see if it doesn't help
performance somewhat. ;-) Just don't do it over my backyard please. Hee

I used to help out at a local aviation museum here. We were restoring an
old Lanc. I remember reading the performance figures at the time back
then, but can't remember them now. I do remember there was quite a
difference in performance with a full load, and empty. Deliver the cargo,
and then hightail it home. Pretty slow target on the way to work though,

[MBZ] OT: Bought a new computer monitor

2012-01-27 Thread Curt Raymond
My wife wanted the 17 LCD from home for her office to replace her 17 CRT so I
bought a new monitor for home. We watch most of our TV online and I figured it
made some sense.
For ~$180 I got (from Amazon of course) a Viewsonic 24 LED. From the reviews I
read it seemed like a good deal and I've had a Viewsonic monitor before that I
liked.
This thing is HUGE for a computer monitor, 1920x1080 (full HD) gives me plenty
of desktop real estate. I've been steadily turning the brightness down so it
doesn't burn my eyes out. Down to 35% now, might go to 30% yet. The screen is
clear and sharp and the whole unit is very thin (maybe 1 1/2) and weighs
nothing. Supposed to use very little energy too.
We'll see how it lasts over time but so far I'm pleased.

Re: [MBZ] Tranny questions

2012-01-27 Thread Hendrik Fay
Pretty certain that the K1 spring kit is only for 722.3/4 trannies and
only fixes the 2-3 flare.
Have no experience with the 722.1 boxes but flaring can be caused by a
slow change over, worn clutches, brake band 2 sticking and perhaps low
operating pressure.
At this stage I would suggest that a rebuild is not in order but a look
inside the pan to see if there are metal particles is in order.

I have had good success with Fuchs titan D3 semi-synthetic ATF.
Modulator adjustment is related to all gears and while adjustment will
mask a problem it does not fix it.
Shift timing is determined by control pressure, nothing to do with the
modulator.
You really need to find someone who is an expert on these boxes and will
not just tell you that you need another box.

little vrrr as the engine revs up a little for an instant during
upshifts---that condition can often be cured by proper modulator
adjustment, a fluid change, and running a while with synthetic ATF.
But the best cure for what you're describing, Tim, is often one of
Rusty's rebuilt trannies installed by a competent shop (or on your
own, if you have the right equipment).

[Fluid was replaced 8-10 months ago, I'll
do it again soon anyway since I have a slow leak I want to track
down.]
 b) Why would it shift early with a pushrod that was too long? Seems
like it should be the other way.

*I think it's flaring, basically the engine spins before it goes
through (I think) 1-2 and 2-3, especially if I'm accelerating above
40%. If I force it to hold gear with the floor shift, it shifts
perfectly at a higher RPM.

Thanks!
-Tim

You can use k to abbreviate kilo, meaning a 1000 and you can use km to
abbreviate kilometers but a kilomile would be 1609.344km, so if that R320
has done 199kilomiles, it has in fact traveled.well..**lots

One can rate many things in kilos. Kilobuck, Kilowatt, etc.
 Why not Kilomile?
