Could I suggest the installation of a motion sensor tied to a video camera and bright lights that records? [MBZ] DIY Tranny Rebuild
In Rick Knoble's submission, he provided a link to DRIVE TRAIN.COM which contains the following quote: If you have particles in the pan of the transmission you can be sure that the same contamination can be found in the cooling system at the bottom of the radiator. With your overhaul parts you should also purchase two cans for radiator cooling system flush and completely purge out all contamination in the cool hoses both output and return as well as the radiator reservoir. Doesn't the bottom of the radiator just have sealed lines from the tranny that carry fluid, clean or dirty, through that area to be cooled by the radiator? And don't these lines keep the two fluids separated? So why the need to flush the radiator and the radiator reservoir? Or did I misunderstand and it means to flush out the TRANSMISSION lines that are in the radiator? Re: [MBZ] DIY Tranny Rebuild
Most I have taken apart have a small heat exchanger built into the bottom of the radiator. It is very likely that it is contaminated with clutch pieces or metal if the trans is real bad. You MUST flush the cooler and lines when you rebuild the trans! Many tranny shops will not warranty a rebuild unless they flush install a remote trans cooler in place of, or replace the radiator to insure a clean system. The cooler and lines can hold a pint or so of dirty trans fluid, that can hold a lot of dirt! [MBZ] Today's First puzzler: The incredibly disappearing SLS fluid (1985 300TD)
All: I can't recall whether I tasked the group to help me figure out why the newly re-reconected self levelling system on my 1985 300TD with the CA version engine kept losing (or loosing, if you prefer) its SLS fluid. The rear components were dry (SLS valve, air cells, struts) so I had suspected a leaky canister that was pretty much covered with a film of oily residue, or perhaps a hose connector under the hood. I cleaned the canister and surrounding area thoroughly and I drove the car for a couple months. This past Saturday, the local MBCA club hosted a session at a dealership in suburban MD in which a tech would drive our cars onto a lift and proceed to spend up to an hour going ovet the car with a fine tooth comb to find new problems and diagnose existing ones. We checekd the SLS canister and sure enough it was bone dry, but to my surprise there was no evidence of fluid anywhere under hte hood. After 30 minutes, Ed and I discovered the surprising source of the fluid leak, and probably solved another issue as well (sooty smell inside the car when the heat came on). I will award a special prize of artisanal (formerly known as home made) hot pepper jelly to the first among you who correctly diagnoses the source of the SLS fluid leak. [MBZ] Today's Puzzler part deux: Sooty smell penetrating the car - 1985 300TD
This one really threw me for a loop. Once my 1985 300TD gets halfway warmed up, a sickly sweet soooty smell emanates through the vents - even with the ACC in the off position. At the tech session last Saturday, Ed (the tech I was working with) pointed out several possible sources: a dribble of green antifreeze coating the large radiator hose that heads downward and to the left (viewed from the front), and other areas. We tightened the radiator hose clamp, which seemed to solve that issue. Ed pointed out as well an awful lot of oil coating the engine, basically from beneath the turbo to the bottom of the oil pan, as well as oil seeping fom the breather hose on top of the valve cover and the valve cover gasket itself (despite being new). I was instructed to clean off as much of this gunk as possilbe and then inspect for any live leaks. I cleaned up all the areas that were accessible, but it's still too early to tell whether there is an active oil leak associated with the turbo assembly. The antifreeze flow has been stopped so while I am hoping this takes care of smell problem my pessimist self says the turbo itself could be the source of the toasty burnt smell. Anyone been there/done that? Re: [MBZ] Today's First puzzler: The incredibly disappearing SLS fluid (1985 300TD)
An SLS line was leaking onto the turbo/exhaust area, where it was heated to produce the smell but also heated/burned so that it didn't actively drip from the car. I further guess it was the supply line, producing a high-pressure very small stream of oil that could cross the air-gap from the line to the turbo/exhaust. They broke the door lock again and then broke the ignition lock but did not get it to go without the key with the chip in it. Again, more than $1K in damage but at least in that case I did not have to pay the deductible because there was evidence that they tried to steal the vehicle. Re: [MBZ] Diy tranny rebuild
I looked into doing this, I have a 722.4 with a slipping 4th gear sitting in the shed, which means the K2 is worn. Unfortunately the 722.4 won't be suitable for my 300TE (M102 3liter) which uses a 722.3, well it would probably work but the .4 is not as strong as the .3. Actually the 260E (M103 2.6) got the 722.4 for some reason (cost cutting most likely). There is info out there and a good write up on another forum by someone who did the job and from memory the only special tool you really need is the clutch pack compressor. [MBZ] OT 12v dc to 120v ac heating element?
One of you technical guys must know this. Say you get your diesel tractor suck in the woods a long way from the 120 volt ac outlet that would normally power its 800 watt engine preheater. Night is coming. It will be very cold in the morning when you return with chains, come-a-longs, etc. to extract the tractor. Let's say you happen to have a charged 12v car battery that could carried to the scene. If the + and - poles of the battery were wired into the slots of the 120 v ac plug would the heater work without damaging anything? Would it warm the engine up in 20 or 30 minutes like it does on 120 v ac? I tried researching this on the web but all I get is a lot of talk about the right size inverter needed. Would an inverter be required just to run a resistance element? Anyone BTDT? Thanks. Long ago when you first complained, I said it was likely leaking through the low pressure hose. Yes Through the hose. Second choice, leaking through the pump into the engine. Unless your CA 85 is freakishly different, all the SLS plumbing is on the left side of the car, not the turbo side. (applies to earlier and later TDs) Oil around turbo: Well, you didn't want to replace the evil trap oxidizer (Football) as everyone, including MB suggested, so I would suspect the turbo is trashed. Re: [MBZ] OT 12v dc to 120v ac heating element?
might get enough warmth to get the thing to turn over, but no way you will be able to heat it. Lose electrons at the point of inverter, then the pre heater would suck the battery dry in minutes trying to make 800watt clay Best to hit the local harbor freight and get a small genset. I figure 1kw peak, a gallon of fuel would be the same as toting a large enough battery. On Mar 26, 2012, at 5:38 PM, David Kristin Gilmore wrote: One of you technical guys must know this. Re: [MBZ] OT 12v dc to 120v ac heating element?
I dunno but the wires would probably have to be fairly heavy to pull 8a. My 400w inverter isn't to be run using the car's cigarette lighter... 800w inverters aren't all that hard to find are they? You could also drain the oil, warm it up inside and put it back in. I'd briefly considered the idea back when I lived in the apartment and was trying to keep a 240D running (or rather being able to shut it off at night and restart in the morning) through a -20F winter. -Curt Date: Mon, 26 Mar 2012 20:38:24 -0400 From: David Kristin Gilmore dandkgilm...@frontier.com To: mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Subject: [MBZ] OT 12v dc to 120v ac heating element? Reminds us how good the preheat system in a diesel MB is. My cheapo (~$30 IIRC) 400w Coleman inverter did the job nicely which leads me to believe the heater in an MB is either over-rated or the inverter is under-rated. -Curt Date: Mon, 26 Mar 2012 20:19:17 -0500 From: Fmiser fmi...@gmail.com To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Subject: Re: [MBZ] OT 12v dc to 120v ac heating element? You need a diesel coolant heater. Burns diesel and runs on 12v and puts out something like 14,000 btu which is equivalent to 4000watts/hour. They come up cheap on eBay now and then for $200-$300. Took four of the five o-rings that came with my fleece filter from Q. Hooked up the super sucker to the dipstick tube, and it started slurping air/oil mix with only about a gallon of oil in the bucket. I thought that every engine designed since the 1970s had a dipstick tube that went to the bottom of the pan? Had to crawl under and remove the drain bolt from the SIDE of the pan (probably leaving a cup or a pint of dirty oil in the pan) to get the other gallon out. Torqued the drain bolt to 30nm. Too bad I didn't have a new crush washer, but I wasn't planning on pulling the drain plug. Job was made easier by whoever was kind enough to remove and throw away my belly pans before I bought the car. Dumped my last two 4qt jugs of 5w40 M1 turbo diesel truck down the huge hole the oil filter came out of. Easy target, no spills. Installed the filter and torqued the plastic filter stem to 25nm. Oil level is closer to full than to add, either because I left some oil in the pan or because you don't really need 8 liters. Reset the FSS (flexible service system) and the job was done. In addition to all the wildlife cameras, there are cameras that look like motion lights but record video to a chip. The benefit being that they don't look like cameras. Price in the $150 range and you wire them into the 110 line like a motion light. -Original Message- From: mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com [mailto:mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com] On Behalf Of OK Don Sent: Monday, March 26, 2012 10:47 PM To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: Re: [MBZ] Car breakin A hanger about four lots down from us was broken into last week, a three bladed prop for a Cessna 210 was stolen, along with hand tools.
