Put a 6.2 L diesel with either an SM465 4-speed (no
overdrive) or an NV4500 5-speed (overdrive) into that pickup
and it would be mighty nice. The overdrive 5th would help
if it was ever on the highway. Put a torsen differential in
at least the front and you could get really far before
getting stuck!

The 6.2 L is pretty decent. Folk who complain about it being
underpowered are comparing it to the high horsepower heavy
duty pickups, etc.

The 6.2 L diesel and the 5.7 L gasoline with a carburetor
drive very much the same - but the diesel gets a whole lot
further on one gallon of fuel. I have a couple '85 suburbans
 - one with the 5.7 gasoline and the other with a 6.2 L
diesel. The gasoline is shorter and lighter, and has never
gotten better than 14 MPG, usually 11-12. The tall, heavy
diesel gets 18 MPG. That engine in a similar chassis with
similar air resistance would do even better. So similar
driving - 50% better fuel mileage. I sure like mine!

I was thinking a '72 (disc brakes) 1 ton with a 350. Good farm truck
now that Dad's spending a bunch more time up there. His Jeep isn't a
terrific hauler.
Actually last fall when I was there squeezing the Dodge around on
some of the woods roads I got thinking about buying a Suzuki Vitara
or Sidekick to put the engine from my '98 Jetta into. The Jetta is
very rusty and on borrowed time. Put 31" tires under the Suzuki with
a lunchbox locker out back and it'd be a pretty good woods rig. Dad
had a Chevy Tracker that was decent in the woods stock, better than
his Jeep Liberty actually, he's had the Jeep stuck several times,
never did stick the Tracker. Sadly it was destroyed by a drunk in a
Subaru.

The auto auction uses a fleet of viteras to run around on the lot,
jump cars, etc. They are very good for that and lightweight offroad.
My cousin had a suz samurai in the 80s and he drove it hunting in the
mountains and was quite happy with it except to get to the other side
of the island (200-250 mile RT) had the little engine screaming all
the time. (I am sure it was louder than a 123 240D!)

There is an enormous misconception that the 350 Olds is based on GM's 350 gas
engine. While they share similar architectural dimensions, this is a rumor. Not
only would such a design be engineering suicide, but the gas engine would never
live up to the cylinder pressures created by the 22.5 : 1 compression diesel.
In fact, GM's official statement regarding these rumors was that "All of the
major parts: block, crankshaft, rods, pistons, and lifters have been
strengthened to handle the higher compression ratio." The rumor that the
engines are related likely stems from a combination of the following:
• Because of the engine's identical bore and stroke, the Olds diesel could be
manufactured using pre-existing tooling.
• Not only is it easy to assume the 350 diesel is based on the 350 gas engine,
but owners and outsiders alike needed to place the engine's problems on
something.
Regardless, the 350 Olds was capable of up to 30 miles per gallon in the right
car and with the right driver. GM continuously tried to sell buyers on its Olds
diesel by identifying it with "prestige" and "status". Unfortunately, by the
time most of the kinks were worked out, their customers had fled.

It all depends on what the definition of "is" is W.J Clinton (Slick
willie trying to get out of willie trouble)

As previously posted, both factions are right. It is a different
block, but as you say, the same block can be built into a vergasser,
and has the same dimensions as the 350 gasser. There is no
standardized definition of what Dieselized is. I say strengthening
the casting, using Diesel pistons etc. is Dieselizing an existing
design, but your faction is also correct in that many internal parts
were redesigned to dieselize the 350.

Grrr... Not true, they share displacement and thats about it. It was
a special block which I'm given to understand the block is highly
desirable for those looking to build a gasser.
The 2 basic problems were the lack of water separation as previously
mentioned and the weak head clamping. Once they worked out the head
bolts and people realized they needed a real water separator they
were fine although under powered for the displacement.

Re: [MBZ] loudness

2016-01-17 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
A 240D wailing away at max speed (85? I forget now) is kind of loud but I never
thought I had to yell over the engine. The turbo engines are quieter.
The 124s have the double firewall and much better sealing of the passenger
compartment from the engine bay, they're also a lot slipperier through the air
so theres less wind noise. The 60x engines are much more refined also.
When I've got someplace to park it for the winter I'll again have a 123, they
are lovely to live with but honestly from a cheap to keep perspective my VWs
are tough to beat. The '98 has cost me maybe $3500 total over the 2.5 years
I've had it and it just crossed 270,000 miles. I think I've put almost 40,000
of those on it but I'd have to check my records to be sure. Its going in for a
tie rod and brake booster tomorrow but that'll be the first money I've put into
it for like 6 months other than the bi-annual oil change I did just after
Christmas.

2016-01-17 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Grrr... Not true, they share displacement and thats about it. It was a special
block which I'm given to understand the block is highly desirable for those
looking to build a gasser.
The 2 basic problems were the lack of water separation as previously mentioned
and the weak head clamping. Once they worked out the head bolts and people
realized they needed a real water separator they were fine although under
powered for the displacement.

That's a Horizon TC3, right?
When they renamed the 024 and TC3, they called them what, Charger and Turismo?
Once upon a time, I wanted to get a pickup (Scamp? Rampage?) and put all the
good parts from
a turbo Shelby Charger (seats, ground effects, drivetrain/brakes/suspension) on
it.

At idle/stopped, the 110 with OM621 was noisy enough to let you know

Oldsmodissels were the same dimensions (Bore, Stroke, crankshaft etc)
as the 350 gasser. The casting was strengthened, but not enough. So
kleb et al claim it is not disselized vergasser. However to quickly
put out a dissel, they decided to make a dissel version of the 350.
So the rest of us say it is a disselized vergasser. Either way, it
is a POS for the first several years.

The 6.2 was further strengthened and some dimensions changed, but
still has a heritage based on the SBC. It was more reliable, but
still nothing like the OM engines of the same time. While GM was
designing the 6.2 POS, MB was designing the OM60x series, which IMHO,
are still the best automotive Diesel engine.

Keep in mind that while GM was hawking the oldsmodissel PsofS, MB was
selling the OM617 turbo in the USA in the 123 chassis, which is still
going strong and highly desirable 40 years later. Even the 115 OM617
NA is considered desirable by many. ('Specially if is is baby poop
green.)

That is a rumor. The block is not the same block as the gasser, it is
much heavier duty, the crank is different, pistons are different. on
the outside they look similar because they are designed to fit in the
same sort of cars. The valve covers are the same, the oil pan is the
same, but that is about it.

I live in St Charles, and the River is an effective protective rampart

Well, the repair estimate just by walking around the car and using "used,
reconditioned, or aftermarket" parts came to $14,500, so I guess it is
worse than it looks. Apparently an offset crash like that is particularly
difficult to straighten out.

On the upside, I settled with the insurance company on Friday after more
contretemps than should be necessary, and purchased a one-owner 2009
Bluetec with the same mileage for less than I got for my 2007. We pick it
up in Texas on Saturday.

2016-01-17 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
It was a barn find when I got it in 1983. It had been purchased new by a local
company who used it as a company car for two years. They parked it in 1965 and
it didn’t see the light of day until 1982, when the guy I bought it from took
it out of storage. I think it had around 30k on the clock when I bought it.

A true land yacht. Damned thing was nearly 20 feet long, longer than the
Suburban I replaced it with in Wisconsin.

It’s hard to see, but the plate on the front is the original Indiana plate the
car was registered with.

Look at what was parked next to it in the driveway:

The rules are very strict for MD EJs. No cell phones, must be one rep of
each main party on the election team, must be able to lift heavy weights,
etc. Several hours of pre-election training, and on election day the hours
are long 6AM - 10 PM - or later. We have to reconcile every ballot box
vote by hand, with signtures for each machine by R and D party reps.
Despite all this, a R won. We really do need to do a better job screening
potential voters. ;)

Re: [MBZ] Subject: Re: Tampa re: voting

2016-01-17 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
I have this friend, an old black guy who is 81 and has been agitating
longer than I have been alive. A year or two ago he was all upset about
this subject, basically saying it was to disenfranchise blacks. I asked
him how many people he thought would not be allowed to vote without an
ID (which anyone can get for free from the DMV or somewhere, somehow).
He said a lot of old black folks were born at home, never had a birth
cert, couldn't get an official ID, etc. I asked him how many he knew
like that, he didn't know any but was sure there were some. So I asked
how they could get social security, medicare, and other bennies without
some kind of ID, he didn't really have an answer but was still sure
there were some who would not be able to vote since they didn't have an
official ID and couldn't get one. I pointed out they could go get one,
and he said it would be hard for them to do that, get a ride, etc. So I
asked how they got to the grocery, doctor, etc. some family probably
took them. Well he said they might be able to but the issue was how it
looked, that it was like the poll taxes and tests and stuff, which a lot
of black folks around here still remember. So it really wasn't the
practical issue of having an ID, it was how it was perceived. I get
that, but that doesn't keep anyone from voting or being disenfranchised
(except the illegals who shouldn't be voting anyway).

3 yr ago I was in the (long) line to vote, next to this black guy who
turns out is married to this (white) woman I know. He was watching a
lot of elderly black folks coming in, the (black) poll worker (there was
a white woman and white guy too) was taking them to the booth and
telling them how to vote for Obama. This guy I am next to was getting
really upset and finally went over to the black woman poll worker and
engaged in a fairly heated conversation with her about it, that she had
business going to the booth with anyone, and especially telling the old
black people how to vote. I'm sure they wanted to vote for Obama
anyway, so not like she was changing anything, but it was improper.
Turns out he really detested Obama and had some very harsh things to say
about him (had I said them I would be a racist), which was quite
interesting.

On the same aspect, another woman I know fairly well, who also knows the
wife of this black guy who got upset, was a (Dem) poll observer. She
comes into the place after this happens, we get to chatting, I told her
quietly that this guy was really upset about that, and she kinda
shrugged it off, well they need help blahblah no big deal. I'm sure if
the situation had been reversed she would have had a fit, but since it
is SC here, the dem votes don't really matter much anyway. I did not
let on to him what she was doing there ( he did not know her), he
probably would have gone off on her, the wife then would have gone off
on her at some point later on.

Absolutely.

In fact, when I first went there they wouldn’t align my cars because they
didn’t have the proper spreader bar. The service writer guy I spoke of ordered
one and called me when they got it in. He was all put out that that they
didn’t have one to begin with, as they had just gotten a brand new alignment
rack.

Got that W140 diesel ready to show me?

The 82 was ok, you just need to put a real fuel filter and water
separator on it. They were still running fuel to the IP off the
bottom of a stupid dinky little paper filter than was little more
than door screen.

If your fuel was not perfectly clean, you were buying injectors. Any
water went directly to the injectors and ruined them.

My friend with the grain elevator used to buy shovey PUs back then
with the oldsmodiesel in them. I told him he was nuts, but he put
filter/separators on and had good service life. Much better than
contemporary gassers from detriot.

IRC by '82 they weren't terrible engines but the damage was already done.
I was talking to some old timers at a local lunch spot the other
day, one guy had a diesel pickup that he plugs in, I pointed out
that neither of my VWs have block heaters and the '05 doesn't even
have a place to put a block heater (supposedly no freeze plugs) and
neither has ever failed to start due to temps although the coldest
I've ever tested was -6F just because thats the coldest its been
here since I got the Jetta. I forgot to point out that I never found
out how cold it had to be before a 190D wouldn't start, I tried that
at like -10F...

Those are the new laser machines that don't have to have the wheel sensors on
each wheel. They would still have to have a rack or lift with turn plates to
make adjustments though. Maybe they were just using that to check it but not
making adjustments. I'm looking at old ones and will use it with my future 2
post lift and get some wheel stands with turn plates.

Re: [MBZ] S420 Work for the Day

2016-01-17 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes
I had to go to Sears right before Christmas and get another battery
to replace the 1.5yo battery that died, and sitting next to the
battery bay was a guy doing an alignment (I am guessing that is what
he was doing) without a big machine, there were these laser things
or something the guy put on each wheel then it looked like they were
talking to his controller machine, or something was scanning them,
not sure. But no big drive-on machine in use though they did have
one there too. I should have asked him what was going on but I was
having to monitor the guy doing the battery job, who was a
brain-dead idiot.

On the battery the brain-dead idiot tried to charge me full price
for a new battery, was going to be like $120, I told him that was
bullsh*t for a 1.5yo battery. So then this other guy comes over and
tells him how to do all these tricks on the computer to get a
warranty deal, turns out I owed them $19 some of which was the
disposal fee or something. Had I not been locked into the stupid
Sears battery I would have just picked one up at Costco. It's no
wonder Sears is almost dead (and this was 2 days before Christmas,
the store was a ghost town).

Typical of the Die easy battery.

Sears started machine gunning its feet in about 1970 and has been
working upwards on whatever is left. Closing the catalog stores in
1990 or so was massively stupid. Those were franchises, and so the
investment was "off the books" but some hahvuhd MBA said "Close em",
so they did.

We need to send more MBA to china. The MBAs will cripple the chinee
like they did the US of A.

Re: [MBZ] S420 Work for the Day

2016-01-17 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I have a Tire Plus store near my house that has a service writer who is a
former Michelin tire factory employee that’s really got his stuff together. He
knows me, he knows my cars, and he makes things happen the right way every
time. There’s also the tech who does the alignments that’s really good - I
slipped him a $20 a while back for an “attaboy” and he jumps on my stuff
whenever he sees me bring a car in.

For example, I had a coupon I’ve been sitting on that was god for $20% off an
alignment. I got the 20% off as expected, but when I was looking at the ticket
just now I noticed he also applied the coupon to the wheel balance as well.
Nice.

I’ve never been keen about the retail chain tire people as I think they’re all
pretty much the same, but the people at this one really stand out and deliver
top notch service and often go above and beyond.

The tire guy/service writer did a fantastic job on a package of tires for the
SL500 that have been spectacular. I was really reluctant to drop $1200 on a
set of tires, but they’ve been on the car for nearly a year, are hardly worn,
and since they were installed the car drives like it’s on rails as he promised
it would. I could have spent a lot more for the same tires in other brands,
but he told me these would be the ones I would be happiest with, and I am.

I’ve since found out this guy has a big following with the local Bimmer club
people, so he’s got to be doing something right.

Sears goes out of its way to piss on its customer base at every opportunity.
They've gotten rid of all the employees that knew how to do anything and are
left with the drooling knuckle draggers.
The only reason I ever go there is occasionally somebody gives me a gift card.
Sadly some of their stuff is occasionally good. I've got a 19.2v drill that
still cranks along great. One of the batteries is starting to get tired but its
the one I've used less, I think I just need to use it more...

I got snow tires on the '05 Golf the other day, hadta get a tie rod assembly on
the right front for it to get aligned. I'd thought it felt odd but Angie hadn't
said anything...
The rears were worn out anyway which explained the bad oversteer when it was
slippery. The tire with the bad tie rod was worn real bad on the inside too.
My '98 Jetta also has a bad tie rod, its going in tomorrow...

I would prefer a diesel long wheelbase given a choice. If it’s a gasser (300)
I want a long wheelbase (SEL) despite Kaleb’s abuse. And yes, I know the
300SEL is a dog, and I don’t care. I like the W126 chassis, and if given the
choice of a vergasser, don’t want a V8.

I'd like to extend my advice to ALL on this list complaining about the
national politics, the various candidates, and the (sorry) state of affairs
in general.

Do more than vote, volunteer as a poll worker and do a little something to
make sure this election is as fair as possible!

Does it have to be an SEL, or can it be an SE?
W126 SDs and SDLs are very easy to find.

Andrew, please volunteer to be a poll worker, work the polls for a national
election, and let us know your thoughts after that.

This has nothing to do with minorities or poor, this has everything to do
with the integrity of elections, and making sure that every real citizen's
vote counts.

That's better advice I think. Dan likes the 140, has the tools to fix
them, and they are an S-class.

A 123 diesel is just plain loud. Simple, reliable, fun to drive, etc: in
spades. But droning along having to shout over the engine and road noise
is just not too fun.
