Re: [MBZ] VW

2016-04-02 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Read a report some days ago that the All Powerful EPA has VW in lockdown
over this issue and a lawsuit has been filed against VW in the 20 Billion
dollar range. All cars now in country are frozen from being sold and none
can be imported until the EPA says they can...

That has to sting a bit...

I could be wrong on the 20 Billion.. just skimmed the report.. seems the
number was higher than that.. but since I have no dog in the fight.. only a
quick glance for the highlights.

Re: [MBZ] OT dishwashers

2016-04-02 Thread rogerhga--- via Mercedes
I'm always amazed that you guys are always complaining about Maytag. I
installed mine when I built my house in 1999. About 7-8 years ago Maytag did a
recall on the door wiring and replaced it all for free. Last Summer, (16 years
old) after reading an article on line, I took mine apart to clean the screens,
etc. There was minimal material in the screens to remove. I use Cascade powder
for cleaning. Now, this unit isn't the quietest, but it's fast and efficient. I
guess the newer Maytags may have problems, but then it seems that most newer
appliances do (made in China, trying to get a high energy rating, etc.).
I know it goes against all the list "macho teachings", but if you have an
appliance problem, maybe you should call an appliance repairman to
repair/resolve it. There is that old expression about a man knowing his
limitations.

We have a Kitcenaid that's several years old that I repaired twice under a
homeowners warranty. Quiet and cleans well - no food disposal so no
maintenance other than adding the rinse agent.

Be careful - in the old house we bought a Bosch model that was affordable
but found out later it had the SMALL tub. :(

Bosch make different racks for different countries, but you should be able
to order what you need in terms of racks if you do some homework. The one
we got in 2010 is still in service but the door itself is flimsy
torsionally and the metal at the hinges was giving up, literally cracking.
Not impressed. Filters need cleaning and occasional de scale with vinegar.
No food grinder. Filters are easily removed. Racks in ours were terrible -
none of our dishes fit into that thing efficiently, and the flatware rack
was in the back of the bottom rack, which has to be the worst location for
it. The wheels fell off the top rack all the time and would get lost if not
put back on promptly. Yes it is quiet and energy efficient. Takes two hours
to do anything unless you pick quick wash, which turns out to be 90% of
what you use the machine for. Not terrible, but I won't be buying another
one.

I think i mentioned before here, but you should know that Bosch make the
dishwashers for all other high end brands also, eg kitchenaid, and
thermador and possibly viking/wolf also. So you can shop around the
different brands for the best price on features and rack styles you want.

I think Miele might make one, but it will be double price of a bosch, and
probably only 1.5x as good. We are going with Fisher and paykel dual
drawer model next.

We have a Whirlpool "Quiet Partner I", which was about $200 a few years ago.
Quieter than the 1994 Maytag it replaced, but not terribly quiet. Plastic tub.
No filters, not many options, just gets the job done.

I don't remember which brands make repair info available to home owners, but I
think that is important. I think it is very hard to find repair info for
Maytag appliances.

Kitchen appliances are very simple compared to our beloved cars. There's no
good reason we shouldn't also fix our own appliances (if we want to).

[MBZ] Mobil One Rebates

2016-04-02 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes

The $12 (limit two rebates) rebate is back on Mobil's web site. What made it even better for me is that Meijer has it on sale (for another two weeks I think) for $23.xx a jug.And they've got an mperks online coupon for $5 off a $30 automotive purchase. And, yesterday and today, they had a coupon for $5 off a $50 purchase. So, I ended up paying less than $44 with tax for two jugs and two bags of potato chips. After the $24 rebate, that's $2 a quart, a price I haven't seen since 1987 (and it was an incredible sale back then).

its done such items will be down in the bottom of the washer, not
even sucked down to where they would be chopped up by the

assembly deal that catches all sorts of crap. Long story short I
do not see how food particles would even make it past all this to
be chopped up by the chopper. I pretty much have to pull
everything apart about once every month or 2 and clean all the food
particles out. Lately the top rack is not getting clean at all even
though I know the top spray arm is spinning etc, its just leaving
deposits all over everything. I pulled everything apart again and
cleaned it even though I just did it a couple of weeks ago and it
still does the same thing. I will research further but WOW it sure
does not seem like you should have to take the dishwasher apart
monthly to clean it out. I am starting to seriously consider just
buying another one, this time maybe a Bosch or something. I have
always looked for washers with the disposals and I understand the
european models such as Bosch only have a filter that you have to
clean out. Since these are designed to be cleaned out it seems
easier than having to take the dish washer apart anyway. I know
several of you swear by Bosch so what is your feedback, or anybody

Any thoughts or ideas on my Maytag? This is the one we have now

all this off there is another sort of screen assembly deal that
catches all sorts of crap. Long story short I do not see how food
particles would even make it past all this to be chopped up by the
chopper. I pretty much have to pull everything apart about once
every month or 2 and clean all the food particles out. Lately the
top rack is not getting clean at all even though I know the top
spray arm is spinning etc, its just leaving deposits all over
everything. I pulled everything apart again and cleaned it even
though I just did it a couple of weeks ago and it still does the
same thing. I will research further but WOW it sure does not seem
like you should have to take the dishwasher apart monthly to clean
it out. I am starting to seriously consider just buying another
one, this time maybe a Bosch or something. I have always looked for
washers with the disposals and I understand the european models such
as Bosch only have a filter that you have to clean out. Since these
are designed to be cleaned out it seems easier than having to take
the dish washer apart anyway. I know several of you swear by Bosch
so what is your feedback, or anybody elses? How do these filters
compare to the hard food disposals? Any thoughts or ideas on my
Maytag? This is the one we have now that is about a year and a half
old.

I bought the cheapest available at the local hardware store, it works great, no
filters to clean. I think the pump is a macerator (so?) type that grinds it up
a bit as it pumps it out to the sink-mounted disposal.

Well this maytag is pretty quiet, but I am just so annoyed with having
to take it apart and clean it out all the time. I hate to ditch it
already when its so new but I guess I can just put it out in the garage
and have it available in case the dishwasher in the rental house craps
out. I do like this 3rd top rack on some of the Bosch ones I have
seen. How does the filter thing work? Also, which Bosch did you get?

I just about always have them ask any questions they may have after
reading the detailed ad via email and once all their questions are
answered I will then give them a phone number if they want to schedule
an appointment. What annoys me with this guy is I have been talking to
him about it for a couple of days and wanted to look at it the other day
but he was not available. We set a time for today and I emailed him
that I was heading his direction. He should have said he has somebody
else coming at the same time. At least he did email me back though but
I was literally right down the street from him at a stop light and just
happen to check my phone. Oh well. I am not annoyed about the car but
wasting the trip down to him.

Price is right. Doesn’t look too bad.

Pre-1996 models are troublesome like the W140s are, only they don’t have the
W140 issues. Distributor ignition, old style Bosch fuel injection, etc.

Stil looks like it might be a good deal.

The Merrie Monarch Festival is an Hula annual
contest in Hilo. In the world of Hula, it is the
olympics. The winners are the best of the best.

http://www.merriemonarch.com/the-festival
There will be live streaming from
http://www.merriemonarch.com/live-streaming
tonight at 11 PM central. This will be Hula
'auana and awards. The finalé for 2016.

I would define hula as storytelling. Most people
in the US have heard the song: "I wanna go back
to my little grass shack in Kealakekua Hawaii"
There is a hula that accompanies this song that
tells the story in movements. Every hula tells a
story.

There are different types of hula

Hula Kahiko is the ancient form, and includes
men's hula which is often preparation for war,
telling the story of victories, or a means of
intimidating a opposing force. As such, the
men's kahiko may be aggressive, loud and
intimidating. Other types of kahiko are
generally telling the story and history of the
land, the people and the customs. Accompaniment
is with traditional instruments such as the ipu
and Kala'au (sticks)

http://www.staradvertiser.com/breaking-news/kahiko-takes-the-stage-at-merrie-monarch-fesitval/

Hula 'auana is the modern hula and is what you
think of related to movies, advertisements for
tour companies and the like; the stereotypical
hula. The accompaniment is generally western
instruments such as ukulele, guitar and bass.

This website tells a few of the basic moves.
http://www.alohafriends.com/hulamoves.html

This site defines movements but does not help much with interpretation.
http://www.huladancehq.com/hula-dance-steps-in-depth.html

This video does a good job of defining hula

As usual wikipedia knows all:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hula

You don't have to understand the Hawaiian
language. I don't know more than a few words. I
enjoy Hawaiian music as well as hapa-haole music,
and I enjoy the Hula. I am more drawn to the
Hula Kahiko.

Re: [MBZ] New Frontier

2016-04-02 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I hope they get their act together. Right now it’s like a Three Stooges
episode around here with the changeover.

Our other option is Brighthouse, who is being bought out by Comcast. I’m not
going there, for sure.

Our FIOS contract ends this month, so it’s going to be interesting to see what
their retention efforts are like. Verizon was pretty aggressive, and if you
went off contract for a month or two and ignored their calls and promotional
mail, you could call them up and haggle for a better deal.

Dan, I don't know about security issues. The upgrade kept my Win 7 settings. I
then went into Security settings after the upgrade and tweaked anything I
didn't like or want. And then I left Defender on and I run Norton, so I don't
have security issues...or at least none I know of. Maybe ignorance is bliss,

I did on the wife's PC - and it works fine overall. I did not notice an
increase in performance. Sometimes "Edge" - the new "improved" browser acts
up and she screams at it - but she did that before the upgrade also. I'm
experimenting with Opera, Iron, Comodo Dragon, Comodo IceDragon, and
SeaMonkey to find an easier, less annoying alternative for her.

Verizon got bought out by Frontier in my area a few years ago. I do not have
FIOS available, so I have ADSL. I have had no complaints.

When I have had to deal with tech related customer service, it is based in the
good old US of A, staffed with intelligent, articulate people. I had my
internet go out last week, for a few hours, as a matter of fact. ‎I thought it
was fixed while I was at work, and a field tech showed up a few days later to
follow up. He had called first to let me know he was coming. No sooner did he
leave, and my Internet crapped out again. I called him up on the number from
the caller ID and he came back, checked the lines, then went and reset
something at the central office. He said if I had any more issues with it, to
call him on his work phone, and he would see to it that it would be fixed. He
even called back the following day to reaffirm my ADSL was working properly.

I am sorry you are having problems in your switch to Frontier. In my area, they
are great.

I can’t vouch for the Widows files. but the Apple files you reference are
merely caches, or places where files and data are cached during use. The
system saves copies of these if it thinks you’re using them regularly so that
when you re-visit a site it can load faster.

As a point of housekeeping you can easily clear them on a regular basis without
fear or damage. Just do a “Safari > Clear History” and “Safari > Preferences >
Privacy” and click on “Remove all Website Data”.

Do understand that if you remove cookies if you had autofill turned on for
things like credentials that you would have to re-enter this information on the
respective web page.

There are some tools that clean this stuff out automagically, such as a program
I have used for many years called “Cocktail”.
