Where tornadoes show up, do their damage, and are gone in a matter
of an hour or two. With a hurricane, the warning times is measured

Looks like right along the coast, the eye might go over us in the
morning some time.

Raining very heavily, winds at ground level not too bad. I can hear it
roaring up higher though the trees seem to be holding up so far, but
strongest winds not yet here. High tide in an hour or so, I took a peek
out a little while ago, can't see any water up close, will check again
in a while.

Uverse UPS battery seems to be powering the modem and wifi so have the
tubes for now. Will put some more juice into it with the genny tomorrow.

Re: [MBZ] Auto transport

2016-10-07 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
MIT student, I forget what his field of study was. So it is quite possible he
had some sort of derangement. I'm pretty sure he was off the scale intelligent
but he was of the kind who was barely functional in society.

There was a phrase used on guys like that (there were some girls too), "no toad
sexing." It mostly referred to an admonition to just avoid them, minimize
interaction especially in "that" way.

I recall too this girl who was a year ahead of me At Purdue in the aero Astro
dept too. She was very smart but not very socially adept. I vaguely knew her,
she me, we had the occasional conversation and attended events, etc. So I had
been at mit maybe a week, I was walking up the main steps and literally ran
into her as she had her head somewhere and was paying no attention to what she
was doing. This before texting but basically same behavior. I see it is her
and say hi to her, how are you, etc. she looks at me like I have 3 heads and
turns around and runs off. Seriously, like I was a mugger or something. She
was working on her Ph.D. In the aero Astro dept, I was nominally enrolled in
that dept too, and the AA offices were just down the hall from where I camped
so I would see her somewhat frequently, similar behavior. Weird as hell. She
went on to be a shuttle astronaut, flew several times. She died of breast
cancer a coupla years ago, apparently just had her mother besides work
 colleagues. Kinda sad.

Electric co shut off pwr around 5, took the substation across the road offline
to minimize damage should it get tidal surge. They shut off Kiawah and Seabrook
a bit earlier. Those 2 are barrier islands and might get some significant over
wash. I'm not sure of elevation on the substation but it is near tidal creek s
could get flooded. So most of johns island without power too, they think it
could be 3-4 days. I guess it depends on saltwater getting in their equipment.

I'm at 9.5ft. High tide at 1AM approx 5.5ft. There isn't actually much
sustained wind right now so maybe that will minimize surge although a bit
further south on edisto island it was topping the dunes late this afternoon,
waves and surge. We are lucky it is not next weekend with the full moon tides.

So far here mostly fairly heavy rain, occasional gusts but not a high sustained
wind. I guess that will come later.

We have decided to stay, because the latest forecast has Matthew weakening
from a Cat 2 to a Cat 1 during its pass by Chucktown, and it looks like it
will stay offshore, so we'll be on the weaker wind side of the storm.

I'd still like to move a couple cars to a location less likely for a tree
strike, may do that after I take a shower and get cleaned up.  I suspect
we'll loose power later tonight, might as well enjoy a hot shower and run
the dishwasher, clothes washer etc.

Temps are mid 70's, we've got a steady rain falling, and the wind is
starting to pick up a little.

Lots of TP (toilet paper) and water and food, gas for the generator, two
other different ways to cook if needed (butane stoves).  Plenty of canned
food and dry goods if we need to go for a bit with no ability to cook, but
that wouldn't be too fun if that lasts longer than a day or two.

This morning I awoke at 2 a.m. with something painful in my eye, which
turned out to be a little metal flake.  Yesterday afternoon I decided to
attempt to fix up the suspension on the sail boat trailer, which has gotten
really rusty and would be unsafe to tow on the road.  I used the "sawz-all
of death" to cut off the old stuff, and apparently a metal flake was on my
eyelid or somewhere on my face, and moved into my eye during the night.
Somehow it didn't come off in the shower last night, and waited until early
this morning to strike.  I didn't get a lot of sleep with that thing in my
eye, and my wife and I tried to flush it out of find it and get it out
during the night, but failed.  So at about 9 I headed on down to the
nearest hospital emergency room, which was empty, and within about 30
minutes the doc had found it and removed it and gave me some eye ointment
for the conjunctival abrasions (on the the white of my eye).

I stopped at the grocery store on the way home to see if they had
re-stocked the bottled drinking water, and they had a couple pallets right
in the front of the store, along with a pallet of toilet paper.  The
pressure was just too great, I could not buy just water and ignore that
toilet paper, so I came home with a big package of TP and the two girls in
the house are much relieved.

I drove from Cambridge to Orlando straight through once, then back a week
later. I put a notice on the ride board to see if anyone wanted a ride, pay
some gas money, some guy calls and says he did. So he got dropped off at an
exit on 95, he had no particular plans just wanted to go to Florida. He had a
small backpack. OK, I will pick you up RIGHT HERE next Saturday at 10AM or
whatever, if you aren't here, you're ridin the dog back to Boston. OK he says.
On the 20-some hour ride he said about 6 words the whole time, which were an
odd oblique second-degree abstraction reference to a billboard we had passed
about 50 miles before, in the middle of the night. After about 15 minutes I was
able to work it out, and said something in reply, he just grunted. I think he
was a genius-level functional idiot.

Stop to pick him up, he was there at the gas station. Gets in the car and the
stench was gagging me and my other friend. Turns out he just hitchhiked to
wherever was near there, down to the beach, and stayed under a bridge for the
week. Met some bum who was living there too, they ate oysters or mussels or
something ("seafood" he said) they picked from the creek. He had a great time.
Next exit I stopped at a gas station, got out a rag and a bar of soap I had in
my bag, told him he was to go in and bathe and if he still stunk he was finding
his own way home. He was in there a little while, came back with his change of
clothes from the backpack on (he wore the same clothes all week), and fairly
tolerable. He made no complaint of it, it was like it never happened. Again,
he said about 6 words the rest of the whole ride back, then thanked me for the
ride and walked off when we got back to campus.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Buried house in CO

2016-10-07 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Sheesh, nothing new there, just a crazy big price tag because a bowtie
was involved.

Sinatra's house was featured in Better homes and gardens in what? 1980?
Maybe 1979. I finished up the walls for it in May of 1979. 10"
reinforced concrete. Bowtie had 2 layers of #4 rod at 6" O.C. Stupid.
I think we ended up with 1 layer at 12" OC and that was probably overkill.

You can't find the house now unless you know it is there. I talked to
the current owner in about 1994, and he was quite happy. I didn't like
it because there were no interior walls and the sound bounced all over.

The whole development was supposed to be earth berm/earth roof, but
nobody built there after the first 2 houses. So they changed the
covenants, and now it looks pretty much like any other subdivision,
except for a few places where the sumac that Sinatra specified still
exist. The last house built there is a "HEY LOOK AT ME" 3 story
monstrosity. Opposite from the original vision

Re: [MBZ] OT Latest track

2016-10-07 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
On the farm we're getting a lot of volunteer pines and spruce in the fields to
the point where I've stopped planting new, mother nature does a better job for
free, why would I pay for trees?
So anyway now I spend most of my time either transplanting trees to places we
do want them or mowing down the trees we don't want, like where they're too
close together.
What I've found interesting is if you take two trees about 2" diameter a spruce
and a pine when you mow down the pine you get a big "WHACK" and the tree is
gone, sliced right off. With a spruce or fir the tree bends down, you drive
over it with the lawnmower chopping off the branches on that side, then it
springs back up after you pass. Turn around and go back and you chop the
branches off the other side. Run over it 4 more times and it MIGHT get cut off.
Usually once all the branches are gone I leave it, next spring the stick will
pull out of the ground when I run over it.
And thats why we build houses out of spruce...

Those oaks were there for Hugo, I suspect most will weather this just fine.
Pine trees are the big danger, they snap off mid trunk. THAT is a missile

“Program cars”. When my Dad was a VP at GM he got them - twice a year he could
go to the dealer and pick something out or have one ordered for him. I thought

Re: [MBZ] Auto transport

2016-10-07 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I drove from Cambridge to Orlando straight through once, then back a
week later. I put a notice on the ride board to see if anyone wanted a
ride, pay some gas money, some guy calls and says he did. So he got
dropped off at an exit on 95, he had no particular plans just wanted to
go to Florida. He had a small backpack. OK, I will pick you up RIGHT
HERE next Saturday at 10AM or whatever, if you aren't here, you're ridin
the dog back to Boston. OK he says. On the 20-some hour ride he said
about 6 words the whole time, which were an odd oblique second-degree
abstraction reference to a billboard we had passed about 50 miles
before, in the middle of the night. After about 15 minutes I was able to
work it out, and said something in reply, he just grunted. I think he
was a genius-level functional idiot.

Stop to pick him up, he was there at the gas station. Gets in the car
and the stench was gagging me and my other friend. Turns out he just
hitchhiked to wherever was near there, down to the beach, and stayed
under a bridge for the week. Met some bum who was living there too,
they ate oysters or mussels or something ("seafood" he said) they picked
from the creek. He had a great time. Next exit I stopped at a gas
station, got out a rag and a bar of soap I had in my bag, told him he
was to go in and bathe and if he still stunk he was finding his own way
home. He was in there a little while, came back with his change of
clothes from the backpack on (he wore the same clothes all week), and
fairly tolerable. He made no complaint of it, it was like it never
happened. Again, he said about 6 words the rest of the whole ride back,
then thanked me for the ride and walked off when we got back to campus.

Unless you started out really early in the morning, I wouldn’t think about trying to go from Naples to DC in one day. That would be a very, very long day.

I’ve made it from Reading, PA to SC or GA in one day, and even that’s a haul.

I just did the drive from Little Rock, AR to Tampa earlier this year when I got
my 350SDL, and that was 14 hours nearly nonstop. I went across to ATL and then
down, rather than dropping down across MS. It was a little longer, but faster
and all interstate. If I hadn’t been within a few hours of home when I started
to get tired I would have stopped. I left LR around noon local time (1:00 pm
Tampa time) and got home around 3:30 am, if I recall correctly. I was wiped
out.

And yes, I broke some laws doing it.

mind, flying down and driving back would be a better way to go. Its roughly
600 miles. So, its either a long one day drive or spend the night somewhere
and make it an easy two day cruise. That way you don't have to worry about the
car being torn up or taking two weeks to get to you. From all the horror
stories about an open carrier, a covered truck would be better. But, I think
that increases the price quite a bit.

I flew to Tampa once to pick up a car and drive it back. The drive up Florida
was an easy and pleasant part of the trip. I drove from Tampa to Tupelo,
Mississippi (which was almost 750 miles) in the first day. It should be a
decent drive with almost all interstate.

When I was much younger I might have tried it, but now I know and understand my
limitations enough to realize I don’t want to be smooshed against a bridge
abutment when I fall asleep at the wheel.

I drove straight through from Ft. Lauderdale to Indianapolis on the way back
from our honeymoon. There was a stop of a few hours in Kentucky to see some
inlaws, but other than that it was all white line time. I did a leg of my
return from SFO to Tampa from Bill Wachsmuth’s house in LA to Ozona, TX in one
shot. I’m not sure how far that was, but I was pretty wiped out when I stopped.

Unless you started out really early in the morning, I wouldn’t think about
trying to go from Naples to DC in one day.

I was wiped
out.

And yes, I broke some laws doing it.

cheaper to fly us one way and have us drive the car and much, much faster. Each

doubled the mileage on the car...

One of my daughter's friends in HS was from Mexico (they had moved to
Houston for her brother to get treatment for his cancer, the battle with
which he ultimately lost at 16 or so). She went with the girl for a few
days to their house in Mexico City and brought back a book her uncle had
put together about some of his projects. It was called BioArchitectura
or some such, anyway he was a pretty famous architect and did all these
things that looked like caves inside, were part underground like that
one, very organic. Not my style but they were very cool and artistic, I
could probably have one for a second home or something like that just
for the novelty. Full time might be a bit much.

The more I think about it, I think it makes more sense to fly down and pick it
up. I know you were just wanting a quote and I think most rough estimates
would be anywhere from $400 to $750. For that much money and for peace of
mind, flying down and driving back would be a better way to go. Its roughly

Nope. No W140 chassis’ cars. W126 only, I might consider a nice 300D (W124)
diesel, but prefer the W126.

Thanks for looking, though.

She works in Spartanburg (about 3.5 hr from here in the upstate), has a
house there, gets back here weekends or I go there. She was planning to
come down this weekend but that ain't happening. I was going to go
there next weekend but she will probably come here if she can get here.
We are pretty much at the end of the road, which is 12-20 miles of large
live oak tree canopy so if any of those start coming down it could take
awhile to get the road opened.

I think the lucky thing for Florida, GA, SC, and NC is that the upper right
corner of the storm is staying out to sea. That is the worst and most
powerful part. If the storm had turned inland much more, it would have been
MUCH worse. Im hoping it stays offshore so Charleston and surrounding
areas don't get hammered.

My brother has had two cars shipped in the last year. One from Boston to
Memphis and the other from Raleigh/Durham. Coincidentally, the same guy with
the same truck delivered them both. He was REALLY happy both times. It is an
enclosed truck and his estimate of time was exact. Apparently, most of the
guys business is picking up lamborghinis when they arrive and transporting them
to the various dealers. But, he also picks up additional cars to fill the
truck. I saw pictures of both of my brother's cars being delivered and the
truck is super clean inside and the guy is very professional. The shipping
from N.C. to Memphis was about $700. Yours would be a relatively short trip.
I can get the guys name and number if you like.

The suspension control lever was hang-tagged, white/red striped, with
instructions. I found it torn off and laying on the back seat floor. It was
dirt and damage on the lower rear quarter. With the suspension set properly,
no blocks were necessary, nor would they have fit - they would have fallen out.

Gay Larry was a big help in harassing the carrier, as they were based in CA.
However, they pretty much told us to piss off. I was lucky in that rear air
bags weren’t that expensive at the time, and since it was a Bay Area car the
undercarriage was like new and fasteners came off easy.

Don't they have blocks you're supposed to jam in the suspension for shipping, or
did raising the car make the blocks fall out? I guess you should have red-tagged
the suspension control?

One time Peter Egan (Road and Track writer) hauled a MGB across the country.
They put it on the top of the carrier, and he said the cars below and behind it
looked like they'd been tarred and feathered. He said it never occurred to him

Re: [MBZ] Auto transport

2016-10-07 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
I was looking to buy a Spark EV in Oregon last month, and made a request for
quotes to one of those car shipping sites before I realized what I was doing.
My info didn't go to shippers, it went to brokers.

The way it works is a broker pulls a number out of his backside and gives it to
you. You accept the offer, and he starts trying to find a carrier who will haul
the car for his quote, less a nice commission for him of course. If he can't do
the deal as promised, he waits until it's too late to start over with anybody
else, and tells you if you pay a big fat premium for short notice emergency
service, he can get somebody to pick it up in two days.

I found a 'reputable broker' who had a web page and a nice blog about the car
shipper brokering business, downloaded his 'terms of service', and when I got to
the part where it said that for uncovered hauling, any damage under 3" was
'normal road wear', I quit reading.

My opinion now is:

Either the car is so old and beat up you don't care what it looks like when it
gets there, or it's so precious that you're willing to pamper it with luxury
indoor accommodations
http://rennlist.com/forums/993-forum/747701-car-shipping.html#post10338631 , or
you should just go get it yourself, even if it means dollying a car over the
Continental Divide, or you should buy something closer to you.

Meh. $300 is a good deal for a car like that. Heck, I thought you were buying

2016-10-07 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
It totally depends on who is available, do they have space, is there another
delivery in the area, etc., etc. Auto transport isn’t regulated as tightly as
bulk shipping, so there’s a lot of room for the carrier to play with the
numbers.

It does sound at the low end of the range, however.

And what, pray tell, are we transporting?

Open or closed carrier?

Probably around $600 and up.  Understand that cheapest is not always the best
here.  If your car goes on an open carrier and depending on when it’s picked
up, it can end up being loaded and unloaded several times, having crap dripped
on it from the car above it, etc.

I would also encourage you to have whoever is on the outbound end take lots and
lots of pictures to determine condition before it is loaded.  If it gets
damaged it’s hell to pay to get these people to settle a claim.  Don’t ask me
how I know.

Re: [MBZ] Auto transport

2016-10-07 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
My 1962 300SE got transported from California by open trailer. There was
someone present when it was loaded (properly) and the air suspension properly
set to prevent damage. It got swapped to another carrier somewhere in between
CA and FL. When they loaded it a second time, they set the air suspension on
the highest setting, then proceeded to use load binders to pull the car down
onto the carrier with such force they blew out both rear air bags. This is
what it looked like when it arrived:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/ixf7dw3jkkix8d0/MVC-006S.jpg?dl=0

I fought them tooth and nail for months over the claim, which I was never able
to get settled.

Don’t ask me
how I know.

Those are stock Euro wheels that they got in place of the 16 hole wheels that
were sold here. Funky looking, I think. If you go hunting for stick wheels
for MBs in the 90s overseas, this is what you get. I think they even had
steelies with covers like this, too.

Very nice. I usually don't like the Euro cloth, but this looks nice. BUT, I
hate the wheels. They look weird.

I bet that would be fun to drive!

Facts are facts where is the money.. Has nothing to do with "point
 of
view" unless your only view is up the backside of a certain couple.

Chelsea living in a $10,000,000 apartment in NYC... how many houses
 would
$10,000,000 build in Hati on the local economy... how many jobs in
construction would building those houses bring? No houses have been
 built,
only money collected... Fact are facts.. In my world.. it would be
 called
 fraud...

The DC beltway is apparently an alternate universe

I think the lucky thing for Florida, GA, SC, and NC is that the upper right
corner of the storm is staying out to sea. That is the worst and most powerful
part. If the storm had turned inland much more, it would have been MUCH worse.
Im hoping it stays offshore so Charleston and surrounding areas don't get
hammered.

Dunno, They just said on the radio that Matt is the size of TX. Either way,
not something to mess with.

This one shows the 28' storm surge of Katrina.

Are you going to donate a few $thou to the CCFF? I'm sure they will
spend it wisely and help a lot of people. You might even be able to get
on the action if you give enough.
