That is what I use to do my Diff fluid. First attempt without that on Gump was
a real mess. Even sticking a hose on the nozzle and squeezing while suspended

[MBZ] DeWalt Recip adventure

2016-12-05 Thread clay via Mercedes
Last week I scored a used Dewalt saw so that I could deprive a PnP car of its
tin bits. Polei had a run in with what must have been a parking space barrier.
The underside supports took the brunt of the impact, and over the past few
years these frame rails have rusted out the bottom and into the sides. I think
there is about a foot of metal that wants replacement.

I had rented a saw a few months ago to get myself a bit of rear fender panel,
and did very well until I broke the only blade I had on hand. In the
meanwhile, the crop of W126 examples had dried up.In the past few weeks
more S cars showed up, so I need to go hunting. The battery that came with my
saw is a bit low on electrons, and it took two visits to the yard to get one
frame support. I am less than impressed with a few of the blades that I have
dulled in the process, and squirming around in a gravel filled puddle, while
sawing away, makes for an uncomfortable drive home.

I have a cheap chinese imitation battery on the way so that next visit I will
be able to complete my hunt and move on to another product I might need.

Commerical quantities of hydrogen usually come from natural gas these
days. Might eventually be produced by solar powered hydrolysis, but
not currently.

I always fall down laughing when people talk about "ecological"
electric or hydrogen powered cars. Electricity comes from magic,
right? Haha, they both produce MORE carbon than burning fossil fuel
in the engine, what with conversion loses and all.

Re: [MBZ] 722.6xx Transmission Filter

2016-12-05 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Found this in a DIY for the transmission on Benzworld. This guy has every
possible Hazet and MB special tool there is, and he must be a engineer based on
his write ups.

http://www.benzworld.org/forums/attachments/w210-e-class/138975d1187568458-photo-diy-722-6x-transmission-fluid-8.jpg

It’s clear the filter can’t come out of the valve body with the pan in place,
and it’s got to be on or near the bottom of the pan when it’s all together, so
once I realized this and saw the picture above I called it and buttoned things
up. Filled it up, did a test drive and got it good and warm.

Got my special dipstick out and with 8 quarts of ATF it was barely hitting it
at operating temperature. I got over 8 quarts out of the system as I was able
to drain the torque converter, so I probably need one more quart.

I called it a night, cleaned the garage up and put the cars away for the night.
Working from home tomorrow so it’s not an issue having the SL500 VOR until I
can snag another quart of ATF from FLAPS later in the day.

yes, the earph and the oceans are self healing. They eat oil. (or the
critters that reside there do) The oceans are continually eating up the
oil that constantly bubbles out of the ocean floor, and it ate up the
gulf oil spill in a few weeks, rather than the decades the albore
"experts" said.

Reminds me of black flies in Canada. One year it was very cold all

Mosquitos are a pest -- screens turn black at night when they try to

The blood tricking out of the bite (they slice off a bit of skin and

Re: [MBZ] Excepts from Sierra Club spam

2016-12-05 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes

There are several things going here:

Pipelines are safer than moving that sludge in tanker cars -- there
have been two very serious accidents already, one of which pretty much
burned out a Canadian town. Bakken crude is much to thick to ship
unadulterated, so it's mixed with solvent to move it (mostly hexane I
think, but that's really a guess). This solvent is highly flammable.
The crude itself is 'dirty' crude -- full of carcinogens and toxics,
nasty stuff. Better to put in in a pipeline than the crappy, leak if
they fall over rail cars we have available.

The pipeline was designed and routed by a private company with the
State providing eminent domain services, which is probably really a
violation of the Constitution's ban on taking property without
compensation, and no consideration was taken for anything but the
shortest route to Illinois and the existing pipelines.

Western states have been violating Indian treaties for a long time,
and this is just another example of commercial interests ignoring
Indian Nation status, it's hardly a new problem, but is in fact just
another in a long, long series of treaty violations -- any time there
is money involved, the Native peoples get the short end of the stick.

Pipelines leak. Always. Usually underground. Contamination of the
groundwater or the Missouri River by this stuff would last for
centuries if there was a significant leak into the water table,
rendering the water source for the Reservation poisonous for decades.
If this were to happen, I would guess the oil and pipeline companies
would simply declare bankruptcy and walk away from the people they
poisoned. Not the first time, and there isn't much the Sioux could
do, they don't have a police force to collect from said bankrupt
companies.

Therefore there is a considerable conflict between safe shipping of
Bakken crude and protection of everyone's right to clean air and
water. As usual, the money is all on the oil company side, and money
"lubricates" the political system in the US.

There is absolutely no reason for the pipeline to go where it is
except it's the straightest line from the Bakken fields to Illinois.
Oil company could care crap for anything except saving a few bucks.
This is the issue with the Keystone -- cost more to route it around
the exposed water table in a protected wetlands, the oil company could
give a crap if they make half the state lose their ground water for
drinking or irrigation. A little forethought instead of chasing
pennies could have eliminated much of the problem, but you know, gotta
get that oil going today, might have to defer some profit a couple
years, such a bad thing.

Little people against corporate interests. Unusual result, the normal
thing is for police to disperse the protesters and trample their
rights.

We will see how this ends up. Sadly, probably an oil pipeline through
someone's sacred ground dribbling toxins into the water supply.

surface temp of the earph is tied to sunspots, not escapades, renegades,

I never drive it on the freeway, so the tall gearing is of no benefit.
Mileage around town is abysmal anyway. It has variable valve timing and
abundant torque but would be truly fast like 7s 0-60 with a 3.07. So more
jump off the line is the goal basically. And yes it is a 2.24 or something
now. The only thing missing would be the limited slip. an e500 different
would be 3.07 also I think.

[MBZ] 722.6xx Transmission Filter

2016-12-05 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Changing the SL500 transmission fluid and filter tonight, ran into a possible
snag. This has stumped me and I don’t want to proceed until I’m sure it’s safe…

I’ve drained the fluid, removed the pan and filter.

When I pulled the filter, there was a little tab of sorts on the top of it
opposite the suction tube that clipped into a slot in the valve body.

When I opened my OE Mercedes filter box, the filter looks essentially the same,
but the little plastic tab on the new filter doesn’t have any clips, so it just
“hangs” from the suction tube in the valve body. If I push up on the filter,
the tab indexes right into the slot in the valve body, but there’s nothing that
will hold it in place.

Can this be right?

I’ve looked through Google images and see filters of this type with little
clips on the tab and ones without.

I don’t want to button the transmission up if I’m not satisfied the filter is
going to stay in place.

Can anyone reflect on this? If necessary, I’m going to go over to the dealer
tomorrow and have them pull another to see if it’s got the clips.

[MBZ] BMW Car catches thief!

2016-12-05 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes

From seattle, northern home of fruits and nuts!

Police blotters can be the source of tiny treasures, and one out of
Seattle last week offers up a gem involving a sleepy suspect and a
high-tech car. Per the Seattle Police Department's crime log, a BMW was
reported stolen in the early morning hours of Nov. 27, and thanks to the
perks of owning a luxury vehicle, BMW's corporate office was able to
help cops track the car, parked but still running in an alley—with the
suspected thief taking a snooze behind the wheel.

BMW came to the rescue a second time, locking the doors from afar and
trapping the 38-year-old suspect inside. He tried to drive away, failed,
and was then arrested on charges of auto theft and drug possession for
the small amount of meth cops say they found on him. (In Canada, a game
of GTA led to a joyride and car chase—with an 11-year-old driver)

I agree those symptoms are suspicious. Both tests (used oil analysis, coolant
strip test) could be useful.

Sounds like you can live with it for a bit, and time the work to match your
schedule. Just keep an eye on the engine oil, heavy coolant contamination with
turn it into a frothy milkshake, and then deeper damage can occur (bearings).

Re: [MBZ] Excepts from Sierra Club spam

2016-12-05 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
Oil pipelines under a drinking water source is a bad idea, if alternative
routes exist.. Slight risk but a potentially catastrophic impact. Much
like the BP Horizon spill, which has lingering effects and will have them
for years. I used to think offshore oil was fail safe too until the BP
disaster. There have been numerous pipeline spills into bodies of water and
under creeks. Nasty business. Natural gas pipelines will only explode so
not as big a deal.

Their goal is to stop that oil from coming here altogether, so this is
just one battle in that war.

I had an interesting conversation with this young woman a year or so ago
over a local issue where there is (was) a scheme to do seismic
exploration and drilling offshore here. It is a completely stupid idea
for a variety of reasons, with no upside I can see and no one on the
"pro" side could adequately articulate. We were in agreement on that,
but then she (and I have known her for awhile with not entire respect)
made some stupid comment about oil spills from offshore drilling in the
Gulf (and that big blowout a few years ago was her main issue, which is
perfectly reasonable) and that all offshore drilling should cease. I
pointed out that in the Gulf, and I think on the SoCal coast, that oil
production had actually improved the cleanliness of the coast and
beaches and marshes and such, since the pressure was taken off the pools
and it was no longer seeping and being pushed up into the water to float
to shore and pollute everything. She kinda went blank on that idea,
which I then pointed out was the main issue with the BP spill, all that
stuff is down under there under some pretty high pressure, and pumping
it reduces the pressure, and if done properly, as it mostly has been for
at least 30 or 40 years or more, it is safe and actually has some
significant environmental benefits.

Sometimes, as I well know, zeal can either be due to ignorance or to
calculation.

I don't recall any oil pipeline ruptures, as the impact in minimal. If
I were the pipeline company, I'd offer to install a pipe in pipe for the
portion under the missouri river (which we are told is the rub) with an
automatic pumping/recovery system for any oil leakage under the river.
Some folks seem to think oel is a substance from another plant and is
terribly deadly. They seem to forget it comes from the earph, and will
return to the earph. It is organic. Coal is organic.

Now, if the subject is LP gas pipelines, I have a very different
outlook. Those DO blow, and the results are spectacular and deadly.
The resultant explosion is often heard for 50 or more miles, sometimes
as much as 75 or 100. The shock wave destroys birdlife and other
wildlife for a large area. It is decades before the wildlife returns.

I have found no trace of coolant in the engine oil.

Re: [MBZ] Block Tester

2016-12-05 Thread Jon Agne via Mercedes
Ah yes. I forgot to mention the symptoms.

1. I started to notice that I’d need just a little coolant now and then. A
pint or two now and then.

2. Occasionally on cold start-up, I’d notice rapidly rising temperature with a
cold thermostat and radiator. This is being caused by an occasional air
bubble. Vigorous squeezing of the top radiator hose solved this problem.

3. Occasionally on cold start-up, I’d notice that coolant was flowing out of
the radiator overflow hose. Again with a cold thermostat and radiator.

4. And yes, occasionally when checking coolant when cold, I notice a slight
pffft when cracking the radiator cap.

I have found no trace of coolant in the engine oil.

Accident / Damage Indicator
CARFAX receives information about accidents in all 50 states, the
District of Columbia and Canada. Different information in a vehicle's
history can indicate an accident or damage, such as: salvage auction,
fire damage, police-reported accident, crash test vehicle, damage
disclosure, collision repair facility and automotive recycler records.
Not every accident or damage event is reported and not all reported
are provided to CARFAX. Details about the accident or damage event
when reported to CARFAX (e.g. severity, impact location, airbag
deployment) are included on the Vehicle History Report. CARFAX
recommends you obtain a vehicle inspection from your dealer or an
independent mechanic.

Re: [MBZ] Block Tester

2016-12-05 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
NAPA sells them, as do other FLAPS I'll bet, but I've never tried them.

When I was getting the classic symptom of a pressurized coolant system that
stays pressurized overnight (The White Whale, a couple years ago), my
thought was that the head crack or failed gasket was allowing pressurized
gasses to be dissolved into the coolant when the engine was running. These
dissolved gasses are what the test strips from NAPA are designed to
detect. The gasses have effectively "carbonated" the coolant, like a can
of seltzer water, and if the coolant pressure cap is performing correctly,
it will hold the pressure in the system at 2 bar, but allow pressure beyond
that to escape.

So, does your 250S cooling system stay pressurized overnight?

Having seen the work the folks at the National Reconnaissance Office do, I can
assure you that they've been able to see you at far greater resolution from
that high up in space for a long time.

The Department of Agriculture uses aerial surveys for crop records and reports,
it's very possible that's what you saw. Their imagery is usually much lower
resolution and shifted to infrared for detection of vegetation, sometimes the
illegal kind as Kaleb suggests.

That's what I used to think but when the same plane makes north
south passes at about 1000' and about a mile apart east to west
that takes about 1/2 hr to come back from the north and about an
hour from the south it makes you wonder. I'm thinking that they
do the closer images with the plane and the higher altitude ones
from the sat. I'm on a dial up line so the time it takes to
download the images is noticeable. When you get down to about
1000' another set of images is loaded that replaces the larger
area ones that were loaded for the higher altitude view. I've
seen the flight pattern from a similar looking 2 engine plane
twice now about 3-5 years apart and noticed the different closeup
views about a week after. Of course the larger area pictures
change at the same time so it could still be all sat images. Or
maybe it's the MIB keeping an eye on us.
Of course being German I'm probably just being paranoid to be
thinking that so I like the Google picture taking theory better. :-)
