And the currently correct name is "Celsius", named after the
Swedish astronomer Anders Celsius who developed a similar

A spray-on polyurethane foam should stop water as well as a
plastic sheet will.   And polyurethane is a most excellent
insulation!  If it's closed-cell, it's air-tight and water proof.
And termites really like it as a place to build a colony...

Nope, certainly not cheap, $60K OTD. That is what we have. Seating for driver 
+11, heated front seats, all sorts of safety features like 360 camera setup and 
front and rear sensors, MB/Tex seats and all but the rear 4 passenger bench 
recline, USB-C ports for everyone’s devices,  high performance rooftop AC 
system, 3.0L V6 Diesel, 5000LB trailer towing package, anything one could want 
in a people/dog/paddle board hauler. I’ll have some pictures taken to share 
with the list at some point on a nice day.

BTW, the "experts" don't evaluate a roof by looking at it on the roof. 
(and under the roof)  They look at a satellite picture, then try to 
figure out the worst case scenario for the roof.   THat goes on the 
report to the buyer and their agent.   It is completely bogus, but it is 
how they do it now.

Exactly.   His market may be different that the rest of the country, 
because of all the people fleeing stupid states and moving to FL wanting 
to buy houses.   but he needs to consider it is exactly these people who 
made their state of origin stupid.


I had 2 experienced agents tell me the same thing.  buyers don't give a 
rats ass about efficiency or operating cost.  They want everything new, 
painted fixed etc.   They are too dumb to paint a room, and too lazy to 
hire someone to paint.    Our selling experience bore this out.   We 
spent thousands and months fixing up everything and still got beat up 
badly.   To be fair, a large portion of that was due to the city's 
stupidity.


If there are more people fleeing high tax states wanting to buy his 
house, than houses available, then it is different.   But the buyers are 
still idiots, and they will still be egged on by agents and brokers who 
are as bad or worse.

water freezes at 0c and I will not live to see a 100* day.  To be much more 
exacting, I should learn Kelvin, but that just scares the crepes out of folks 
when you report temperatures.

It also tends to irritate SWMBA when I tell her how cold it is, as she is not 
metric minded

yes.  All you need for solar water heating (in summer or where it never 
freezes) is black pvc tubing laid out where the sun will heat it and a 
circ pump.  It can be on the roof, or on the ground/pavement, or 
anywhere else it will catch sun.   When/where freezing conditions exist, 
it gets a little more complicated.   There is science also to 
determining the dia and length of the tubing needed, but that can be 
trial and error.


On the roof, it can be a gravity hydronic system, without a circ pump.

Back around 1980, I saw plans in Popular Science for a very cheap 
solar heater.
It was, IIRC, a 100' coil of black poly pipe mounted to a black 
painted marine plywood box and affixed on the roof.
The same black poly pipe that transports potable water from my well to 
my house.
It was to be plumbed between the water supply and the water heater to 
preheat the input to the heater.

No need to drain it and bypass it for the winter in Pinellas.
And it sounds like Dan's already got the plumbing loop to the roof.

BaT that and hope some fools on the west coast find it.  Big dollar sale for 
sure.  Craig McCaw (cellular One) has a racing shop that restores vintage race 
cars.  There is a really nice red 510 in the garage.  

The vintage asian cars are huge out there.  I was attending an MBCA event in 
North Vancouver BC a few years back.   Got stuck in the traffic near the venue 
by a few hundred dathonyotas on their way to their gathering.  Traffic at the 
border at the end of the day was a large percentage of the same folks

bullet turnsignals.  By 1962, new import 220Sb has the clear bullet TS 
with yellow bubs.


i'd guess this one was imported in 1961 or before and they reissued a 
MSO calling it a 62.   That makes it legally a 1962, but production may 
have been anywhere from 1959 to 1961.

I arrived near midnight to ANC, the snow had been falling for a bit over five 
days, temps dropping to -17c over the past week.  This morning, temps were 
climbing to +2c, melting the compacted snow/ice tracks in the driveway.  The 
longer I stay here, I am sure I will be able defeat winter weather with ease.  
My tenure here has resulted in record high temps in town and drought.

it’s just not worth the hassle. Everything in it is less than two years old, 
that's AC, exterior paint, water heater, carpet, etc., etc.

Interesting.  I've seen a lot of black iron pipe for natural gas but all the 
piping for my LP system is copper/brass/bronze (except for the stub going into 
the generator).  All this tubing is in a protected area (buried or in the 
crawlspace).

At our other house the water heater is in the garage which would be OK but in 
the winter mah not be as effective. At this house if some sort of vent could be 
installed that had some sort of diverted to vent the cold in the winter and 
direct in into the house in the summer. I wonder if that sort of setup would be 
possible.

Yeah, that’s one of the issues with these being used in colder climates. That 
and their efficiency drops off when the ambient goes down, too. In a basement 
they seem to do OK but if they’re in the living quarters like in your place 
it’s probably not the ideal setup.

I did a lot of research on these before I bought the one for the old house. 
They’re definitely best for certain kinds of applications, but not all. More 
heat = more efficient. That’s ideal in my climate, as the garage is always warm 
even in the “winter”. Definitely made a difference in the energy consumption. 
Between my new AC unit and the hybrid water heater, both replaced at about the 
same time, my very worst electric bill went from $275/month to maybe 
$150/month. That convinced me I made the right decision. I wished I had known 
the new AC would make such a significant difference in energy consumption, as I 
would have replaced it a long time ago.

I like the idea but the problem here is our water heater is actually in its own 
closet inside the house. The cold air it would vent in the winter would be a 
problem unless I installed some sort of vent to vent it into the attic space. 
In the summer it would be great. Hmm.

I had an acquaintance who was the husband of a friend I worked with. He was a 
SEAL and had gone to the Monterrey Institute to learn languages (as did she, 
she had for reasons unclear enlisted in the Navy and was in for a few years). 
He was fluent in Russian, apparently spoke like a native. She also spoke 
Russian very well which was somewhat strange. 

He was not around much. When he came back after a coupla years of being off he 
was an interrogator of (apparently) Russian defectors. Prior to that he had 
been “military attaché” in Tajikastan or one of those Garden Spots. The 
stories...

They got divorced soon after he came back, I think his reentry into “real” life 
was quite difficult. I always wondered what crazy sh*t he was still engaged in, 
he would disappear regularly for 2-3weeks at a time which of course was hard on 
her...

Back around 1980, I saw plans in Popular Science for a very cheap solar heater. 
It was, IIRC, a 100' coil of black poly pipe mounted to a black painted marine 
plywood box and affixed on the roof. 
The same black poly pipe that transports potable water from my well to my 
house. 
It was to be plumbed between the water supply and the water heater to preheat 
the input to the heater. 
No need to drain it and bypass it for the winter in Pinellas. 
And it sounds like Dan's already got the plumbing loop to the roof.

hybrid water heater like the one I put in at the old house. Yeah, they’re $1200 
new, but cost about $100/year to operate. A comparable standard resistance 
element water heater costs around $400/year, so the hybrid payback is pretty 
quick.

After all, it’s only money...

Have you the OM617 waiting for a new life?

Looks like the kit only has the parts to mate up to the transmission.  What
about engine mounts, radiator hoses, fuel tank / fuel lines, throttle
set-up?  Exhaust?

I'd think that if you had an entire donor car to start from, fabricating
all those bits would be a nice project.

SWMBO has offered that the OM603 burns a little too smokey for her taste,
for use in the "new" 124 gasser wagon project, so I might be making Floyd
an offer on that OM606 turbo that is wasting away on his vast estate...

Very stinky, know of a similar story for a distant relative who was rumored
to have done some work with the CIA during the cold war.  Found dead in a
foreign country, family pretty much immediately told it was a suicide, no
one believes it but official story is as far as anyone can get.

it was required for the title insurance when the deed was transferred. Says 
nothing about suicide, but I suspect that’s because suicide is illegal in the 
Greek side of Cypress.

So I mentioned the former owner of our new house who allegedly offed himself in 
Cyprus. We knew this guy well, and there was no way he was suicidal. While I

background, note that it is not mentioned that the location of his death was in 
a very rural location not far from a Five Eyes listening post run by the Brits

smuggling and trafficking due to the division of Cyprus and the geography. 
There are also reports of a letter left by him that embassy personnel saw but 
did not provide to his family. If you do some serious digging you can find 
references to this in some foreign service forums.

 The best part about Kroil is its largely inoffensive smell, unlike PB 
Blaster...
Would a gallon of white vinegar allowed to sit for an hour be worth doing? In 
lantern land vinegar gets used to clean parts quite often. I upgraded to citric 
acid, I can make it stronger and in the long run its cheaper too.

I went down yesterday and soaked all the bolts in Kroil. The studs from the 
manifold to the turbo are a lost cause. The bolts into the engine don't look 
bad though. Fortunately the manifold comes with new studs.
$1700 for the manifold direct from Pisten Bully. You might remember that this 
is an MB engine but the Pisten Bully tilts the turbo differently, we never 
could find an MB manifold that we could work with...

That reminds of something. So my father is living in mi grandparents house. 
This is about a 100 year old house and they bought it in 71 or 72. My 
grandfather died in 91 and grandmother died in 03. Not too long before she died 
she hired a plumbing company to completely replace all of the gas lines under 
the house and paid probably $3k or so. A couple of weeks ago I was over there 
and immediately smelled natural gas. Of course my father did not. Nevertheless 
he had a plumber come check it out. Plumber says he has never seen gas lines so 
rusty and they are definitely original to the house. No way they were replaced 
in the early 00’s. They are supposed to replace them all this week.

out of the tank and the nylon/plastic drain valve. I’m enjoying some lunch 
while the Kroil does it’s thing. I’ll go out shortly and see if I can turn the 
valve loose. Earlier attempts yielded no movement.

This could get ugly.

 Power is still on, its rain/snowing, about 35F. Not bad really, it snowed some 
before the rain so the windshield won't be too hard to scrape. Angie is upset 
because I'm still planning to go hunting this afternoon. Tomorrow is the last 
day...
I don't think I mentioned I missed a deer Saturday. I feel like I let my rifle 
down, it was about a 30 yard shot that I should have made. I think I was 
surprised the gun went off. On the plus side the gun went off which I think 
means I've mostly gotten my gear figured out. Muzzle loader season is more 
challenging. After I missed the deer (there were 3) ran down the hill where 
Zach's gun misfired. It made a kind of farting noise, we found the bullet about 
10 feet from him. Probably his powder had gotten a little wet. Can't tease him 
too much he got 2 other deer with that gun this year.

I bought my SL600 from a guy associated with this dealer.  He was black 
but the guy who runs the place is Bulgarian, I don't know how they got

We’ve had light rain and cloudy skies now for at least a week. Unusual, but not 
unheard of for this time of year. The part that stinks is that the last couple 
of days it’s been in the high 70s, so it’s not terribly pleasant if you want to 
work outside. Cold front coming through on New Year’s Eve going to drop the 
highs into the 60s, but it will be sunny and dry, with low humidity. That’s 
typical Florida “winter” weather. Thursday things kick back up into the high 
70s and chances for rain increase (again).
