Assuming a person has a normal immune system, a person should be immune for a
period of months. This supposition is based on the nature of somewhat similar
virus diseases.
A university prof virologist, says the difficulty of making assumptions about
this virus is that it has the characteristics of 3 different viruses. Given
more time, more will be known, and treatment will hopefully be more effective.

Umm - immunity to the common cold, another corona virus, doesn't work.
There's no real reason to think that this corona virus will let you build
immunity to it either. All it has to do is morph, change, evolve a bit, and
off it goes.

Worldwide we should already be building up a population of cured and immune
workers who can go back to work in perfect safety and gradually get cities and
towns back on a functional basis; the first item being the restoration of the
medical system to the point where both coronavirus patients, and ordinary
patients, can be treated effectively.

Because the press is overly fond of sharing the data, I am able to keep track
of the hotbed of US infection on an hourly basis, even though I no longer live
in WA. Latest figure had 74 deaths out of 1376 confirmed infected. That seems
consistent with the figure stated below. There was a 10% fatality in the
beginning, but has been falling toward a 5.5% kill ratio since.

Alaska is setting up regulations governing behaviour of those entering the
state from outside. The college kids being repatriated, if they come from an
area of contagion, will have to isolate for at least 14 days, not attend events
outside their homes, use public transport, or come in contact with others
outside their homes.

Meanwhile, eateries are no longer able to serve food unless it is delivery or
pick up. Employment in that sector (including bars) has fallen to 10% of
former staffing levels. Hope is that this only lasts until April 1. Cruise
ships will not arrive until July, which is a massive hit to the employment
where boats disgorged visitors. Expectations were for an increase in revenues
of up to 40% in 2020 from tourism. The oil fields are packing up due to the
decrease in oil prices. Todays. price for a barrel was $22.43, down from the
expected/budgeted $69 at the beginning of the year. Larger companies are
idling rigs and dropping capital investment by approx. 25%. News this morning
was some $280 million of the expected $1.8bn was leaving the table, with other
firms not yet reporting their coming cuts.

All the applaud for government handouts is silly, as somebody (you and I, the
tax payers) will be footing the bill. Better that we were able to keep on
interacting with business to keep the economy flowing, and allow the creation
of jobs related to any deaths that take place. More grave digger jobs, more
flower arrangements and florist delivery, more hallmark cards, janitorial
positions, and the sports and entertainment sector, as well as travel could
just keep chugging along.

I did enjoy the dissonance of the CBC stories about closing down businesses,
rousting kids from college dorms at Concordia in Montreal, shutting the border
to non Canadians, and the story of the need to import 16k agricultural workers
from Mexico to keep food growing and produce sections viable. As if wetbacks
are immune to the flu. Just wait until tamale munchers start dropping dead off
their burros.

Re: [MBZ] OT: A contrarian view on COVID-19, plus good news - there's a CURE!

2020-03-19 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
Every medical center treating these patients, including ours, is using
hydroxychloroquine. It is an old and well known drug. Not a cure by any
means. We hope it helps.

The epideliologic evidence is extremely poor quality; I will give him
that. But the lack of high quality evidence applies to his position also.

As is so often the case, this situation boils down to what to do in the
absence of evidence. If everybody taking it easy for a week or three gives
us some time to get better data, I am all for it. The testing is ramping up
by the day and it will not be long until we have on demand testing for
everyone at drive throughs. That will give us a clear picture of true case
fatality and how contagious it is. Those numbers can then drive policy.

If he is wrong, we could be the next Italy. If the feds and states and
cities are being overly cautious, things will be back to normal pretty
soon.

Garcetti put everyone in lockdown tonight, and then Newsom did the same for
the entire state of CA, or something like 37 million people. Interesting
times.

Still waiting for the wave to break at work. We have a few cases, all
elective surgery is cancelled, all staff who can telecommute are doing so,
all meetings that can be done by phone are being done by phone. Lots of
contingency planning because Italy has lots of healthcare workers out with
infection. We remain very short of N95 masks. Not sure when that situation
will improve. Trump approved all the industrial n95 masks for sale to
hospitals, but I think many of them had already been hoarded by
individuals. Basically you need a bunny suit, an N95 and a face shield to
stay healthy if dealing with large numbers of infected patients.

I dont have a problem with doing simple things to slow this down while we
get a better handle on it. Most of us believe it is out there multiplying,
because that is what contagious viruses do. Even if distancing only gives
us some time to get n95 masks to hospitals to protect doctors, nurses and
other staff, it will have been worth doing.

The hospitalized are pretty every divided age group wise. Young people are
dying in this thing. Not as often as old people, but often enough for
everyone to think seriously about it on a personal level. Not too many
contagious things put 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 year olds in the hospital at
similar rates. That is what is happening. Old people are recovering less,
but lots of young people are being hospitalized with viral pneumonia.

Let's all hope the true prevalence of asymptomatic infection is much higher
than suspected and that the case fatality rates are wild overestimates.

Karl

A local mech has a 300SD maybe 3-4 yr ago sitting in his yard for awhile. I
stopped by one day, the car was in excellent condition, gold color light
interior, but he thought head was cracked. He wanted like $1200 for it. I knew
there was an engine in a junkyard in a wrecked car probably with a good head, I
offered $500, he wouldn’t budge. Don’t know what happened to it, wasn’t there

If chloroquine does prove to be the magic bullet that controls the coronavirus
epidemic, it will be a remarkable coincidence since the organism it has been
killing for 70+ years; a protzoan; is completely unrelated to the virus that
causes coronavirus infection. That's based on current knowledge, but there may
be biochemical similarities that explain it. The protozoan is easily seen via a
clinical microscope such as below:

https://search.yahoo.com/yhs/search;_ylt=AwrEeSS9CXRe2RUAIgsPxQt.;_ylc=X1MDMjExNDcwMDU1OQRfcgMyBGZyA3locy1pYmEtMQRncHJpZANSSW1nc1NLcVExeUFUckx0akZTWWtBBG5fcnNsdAMwBG5fc3VnZwMwBG9yaWdpbgNzZWFyY2gueWFob28uY29tBHBvcwMwBHBxc3RyAwRwcXN0cmwDMARxc3RybAM0NARxdWVyeQNtYWxhcmlhJTIwcHJvdG96b2ElMjBhcmUlMjB2aXNpYmxlJTIwbWljcm9zY29waWNhbGx5BHRfc3RtcAMxNTg0NjYzMjc0?p=malaria+protozoa+are+visible+microscopically=sb-top=iba=yhs-1=InsieWlkIjoiZ3lmZiIsImN0YWciOiI4NzgzIiwidmVyc2lvbiI6IjEuMC4wIn0i=r=gyff_8783_FFW_US

An Australian lab has discovered a unique cell that appears in the bloodstream
when a person is infected with the coronavirus, and disappears as the patient
improves. IMHO this could be a way of diagnosing the coronavirus disease if no
diagnostic kits are available. It could probably be done while the patient
waits if there are no special staining or incubating requirements.

is an important summary about COVID19, flattening the curve and what
will happen if we don’t take strict precautions now:

I know people are getting a lot of information, and not all of it is

the best social media posts to date on this topic (copied/pasted below).
Please read what she has to say and share with your loved ones, friends,

making. Err on the side of caution. Re the info below--note that
"coronavirus" is used generically to mean the specific strain Covid 19.
I will apologize in advance for not responding to comments as work is
very hectic right now:

Dear Friends,
So much confusion, misinformation and denial is bouncing around on
social media about the coronavirus that I thought I would try to
explain, in plain language, why the experts see this as such an emergency.
You will see the claim online that this virus is a lot like the viruses
that cause colds, and that if you get it, it will probably just seem
like a bad cold and you are very unlikely to die. Depending on who you
are, these statements are probably true. But they are incomplete, and
the missing information is the key to understanding the problem.
This is a coronavirus that is new to the human population, jumping into
people late last year from some kind of animal, probably at a wildlife
market in Wuhan, China. It is related to the viruses that cause colds,
and acts a lot like them in many ways. It is very easy to transmit
through the respiratory droplets that all of us give off. But nobody has
ever been exposed to this before, which means nobody has any immunity to it.
The virus is now moving explosively through the human population. While
most people will recover, about 20 percent of the people who catch it
will wind up with a serious disease. They will get pneumonia that causes
shortness of breath, and they may need hospitalization.
Some of those people will get so sick that they cannot be saved and will
die of the pneumonia. The overall death rate for people who develop
symptoms seems to be 2 or 3 percent. Once we have enough testing to find
out how many people caught the virus but did not develop symptoms, that
might come down to about 1 percent, optimistically.
This is a large number. It is at least 10 times higher than the
mortality rate for the seasonal flu, for instance, which in some years
kills 60,000 or 70,000 Americans. So just on that math, we could be
looking at 600,000 or 700,000 dead in the United States. But it gets worse.
Older people with existing health problems are much more vulnerable, on
average. The mortality rate of coronavirus among people over age 80 may
be 15 or 20 percent. It appears to have 7 or 8 percent mortality for
people aged 70 to 79. Here is the terrible part: If you are a healthy
younger person, you can catch the virus and, without developing serious
symptoms yourself, you can pass it along to older people. In other
words, as the virus spreads, it is going to be very easy to go out and
catch it, give it to your grandmother and kill her, even though you will
not die yourself. You can catch it by touching a door knob or an
elevator button.
Scientists measure the spread of an epidemic by a number called R0, or
“R naught.” That number is calculated this way: for every person who
develops the illness, how many other people do they give it to before
they are cured (or dead) and no longer infectious? The R0 for
coronavirus, in the absence of a control strategy, appears to be a
number close to 3 – maybe a bit higher or lower, but in that ballpark.
This is an extremely frightening number for such a deadly disease.
Suppose you catch the virus. You will give it to 3 other people, and
they will each give it to three others, and so forth. Here is how the
math works, where you, the “index case,” are the first line:

1
3
9
27
81
243
729
2,187
6,561
19,683
59,046
177,147
531,441
1,594,323
4,782,969
14,348,907
So, in just 15 steps of transmission, the virus has gone from just one
index case to 14.3 million other people. Those 15 steps might take only
a few weeks. The index person may be young and healthy, but many of
those 14 million people will

Typical, let the feds run it and it takes too long, is too expensive, and
in the end doesn't even work right.

Maybe one good outcome of this 'crisis' is a dramatic change in law and
regulation to unshackle private enterprises for producing such tests. If I
were Prez, I'd try to ram that through Congress right now, before they
start the next round of impeachment hearings. Could probably save a bit of
money in the federal budget by eliminating whichever office is responsible

I went to our local farmer’s market at 4:30 this morning. Understand that this
is a commercial marketplace, so the customers are mostly restaurants and places
that use large volumes of produce and other goodies. They allow retail
customers in after 4:30 am when the restauranteurs are all pretty well done for
the day.

Plenty of everything. Really. Tons of produce, meat, staples, etc. I did not
look for TP as we have an adequate supply. I bought a couple of beef
tenderloins (filet) (~$30/each) and a pork tenderloin (~$17) and called it a
day. I meant to get some spuds but forgot. Dang it.

Good eating for the next few weeks.

Swung by the MB dealership around 7:00 am to pick up some parts I had ordered
last week. Not a soul in the service area. They have blocked off the new car
lot so you can’t drive through or park in it, so I had to park in the service
lane on the far side. There were a handful of cars in the shop and a few people
sitting in one of the “lounges” they offer for waiting.

Re: [MBZ] Supply run

2020-03-19 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Oh that reminds me, my favorite coffee emporium is doing outside service only.
It was actually kind of fun to stand on the sidewalk and wait. They're no
contact, pay by card only.
Our grocery stores also have senior hours, I think its like 6a-8a or something
like that. Probably the most sensible precaution going on considering the
elevated risk for the elderly.

[MBZ] OT Covid Charlie Foxtrot

2020-03-19 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Two independent opinions -- one a friend, a professor of immunology at
the local kawlidge, and the Dr. Boy, both say this whole thing is a
total Charlie Foxtrot re: testing and such.

"The FDA/CDC test is 5 genes by RT-PCR.

Not sure why on earth this method is the go too. could not borrow
our RT-PCR machines because the FDA has only approved the brand ABI.
Total clusterf***.
I had thought about ordering PCR primers posted on the WHO website weeks
ago.

My lab class was looking up the genomes of this virus that were being
posted weeks ago.  Crazy thing is us “amateur” molecular biologists
could do this testing."

Stanford developed their own tests a coupla weeks ago, better than what
is "out there."

This all goes down to a lot of long-time bureaucratic nonsense standing
in the way... comforting... meanwhile everyone is pointing fingers at
the others and the guy in charge, playing the blame game, filling 7x24
cable time...

Unfortunately there is no data on underlying heath issues which I would expect
to drive down mortality rates among the otherwise healthy population.
Based on this information I'm back to thinking that this is much ado about
nothing. For this I am glad, I had let myself freak out a little yesterday...

If the entire world is sitting at 170,000 cases right now I find it
extraordinarily unlikely that the US alone will have 10x that number in 4
weeks. Especially with China already over the hump and having seen zero new
cases yesterday.
Yes I assume the Chinese are either lying about no new cases or they've stopped
testing new people but I do expect that they're over the hump and cases are
declining...

Chloroquine is being expedited as a treatment. It has worked in South Korea,

These can also be taken as a prophylaxis for those are highest risk. Home run.
Possibly a grand slam.

Re: [MBZ] 2001 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class SL 500 Roadster 2D

2020-03-19 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
It takes a good solid day (8 hours) to remove and install the hydraulics. That
is, a total of two days. It’s not difficult work, but it’s time consuming and
involves removing a lot of trim panels and such.

The guy in Oregon, Klaus of Top Hydraulics, will rebuild the full set of
cylinders and locks for about $800 last time I checked. He often turns them
around the same day or next, so it’s not unrealistic to pull them off, ship
them to him via USPS Priority mail, and get them back in the car within a week.
I’ve done it.

Not only that, they’ve replaced the soft top just a couple years ago, which is
a major expense and not an easy DIY job. I’ve done it on other cars, but I
don’t think I would do it on an R129.

That’s a heck of a deal for the car.

I'd buy that for $500.  Worth it for all the parts, might not even be a
huge issue, most likely wiring or throttle actuators or some electrical
stuff.  The engines are solid and once the other stuff is sorted they
are not too bad, but still somewhat "exotic."

There is one sitting over near a Q joint in a guy's front yard, has been

Not necessarily. Just think of it as an M119 x2, so double your cost of
maintenance.

I wonder what the “engins” work is? Looks like the console is disassembled as
well.

Avoid. No one wants someone else’s basket case.

The WHO test was never offered to us.

"No discussions occurred between WHO and CDC about WHO providing
COVID-19 tests to the United States," said WHO spokeswoman Margaret
Harris. "This is consistent with experience since the United States
does not ordinarily rely on WHO for reagents or diagnostic tests
because of sufficient domestic capacity."

CHICOMS ARE SAYING YOUNG healthy people who have been later scanned (Did
not say ct or mri) show 20% permanent lung damage.   no confirmation
from other areas.
I don't see any reason why they would lie about this, but who knows.
They lie about everything else.

4-5% of those infected, so far as the available data goes. May be lower due to
lack of complete screening and the fact that infections can be mild enough they
don't get reported. Given that Itailians are in general a little healthier
than US citizens (lower BMI, more exercise, etc) and those things have an
effect on mortality, the death rate in the US may or may not be higher than
Italy.

China and S. Korea show very low death rates for young people, but it appears
that the numbers are higher in Italy (so are total death rates).

Have not heard of the permanent lung damage, but I'd not be surprised. Makes
sense that poor condition or underlying health issues cause higher death rates
if significant lung damage occurs.

Italy has an older population than the US and much older than South Korea,
and apparently they stay skinny by smoking, there is your explanation for a
higher death rate there.

The key question is 4-5% of what? The total population? The number of
estimated cases? The number that tested positive? The number sick enough to be

I also heard that some young/healthy folks infected but with minimal symptoms
