It's a way to help meet government mandates. Whether emissions related or
Corporate Average Fuel Economy related, it's a regulatory issue. Granted, a lot
of good engineering has been developed by corporations to meet the standards,
by I think we've reached the point of diminishing returns.

So basically, "blame the government".

You're missing the point of it. It has nothing to do with the longevity of
the car, nor your pocket book in any way. It is meant to reduce the amount
of gasoline burnt that isn't propelling the car. Simply lowering the total
amount of gas burned, not reducing your gas bill or total operating costs
for the car.

Engineering properly would dictate that the starter would be somewhat
overdesigned to accommodate for the additional wear and use, but that’s hard to
say.

I would like to see something in the way of research that proves it provides a
savings in the long run over the life of the car. I’m just not convinced that
it does.

Re: [MBZ] No more 116/201/107 keys

2022-04-14 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
No, it’s just that the PAC key chart is consider “internal” information. Some
dealers care, some don’t. For people like me who are/were ordering keys for
older cars with some regularity, it made their job easier, which is why they
gave it to me.

It’s just like me using my own EPC to vet part numbers before I order them.
They always get my list with the last 8 characters of the VIN, so they can
validate my choices. It saves them time and is an easy sale because I do all
the grunt work of looking things up. I feel a lot better (and so do they) about
having them research difficult items when necessary, because I’ve usually saved
them time and hassle on the front end.

They also share little “secrets” that you might otherwise not know, like how
the group number a part is in is typically the first pair of numbers in the
second group. 210 “82”0 01 51 meaning that the part is in Group 82, Electrical
System. Makes it a lot easier to identify and track things down in the EPC
knowing this if you have a part number, as the EPC isn’t always what I would
call “intuitive".

The Classic Center Parts system (Germany) shows them to be available, which
means they’re available from any dealer in the U.S. as well. They should be
able to order one for you with proof of ownership and have it cut to match the
VIN. That’s typically done at the parts depot in Texas, at least all of the
keys I’ve had made from them in the last 20 year were.

little 201 keys. The 107/126/123 keys we have are all the same. Chunky
side-cut keys. IIRC, our older 107 was an edge-cut key, as is the 114 and 115.

I would ASSUME the 123 keys are still available, but I ASSUMED the late
116 keys would be as well.  In fact, I would have ASSUMED the late 116
keys would more likely to be available since they are used in the 201
which ran up thru the early 90's.  Maybe they are similar but a little
different.  I guess I need to compare them sometime.

I guess I better not lose the key to my 116. Are the 123 keys still available I
wonder?

Next time I'm near my local locksmith I'll try to remember to ask if they have
any blanks.

ordering it. The old timer comes back and says he just realized it was a
116 and not a 126.  And nope, those keys are NLA.  I assume this is the
same key the 201 and and the later 107 uses so I assume those are NLA
also?  WTF?

Anyway, does anyone think if this shows NLA at the dealer it could be
obtained from the classic center?  What about pulling one of the door
handles and sending it somewhere to get a key cut?  The dealer gave me a
couple of local places that can supposedly do this but not sure if they
really can or not.

Re: [MBZ] No more 116/201/107 keys

2022-04-14 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
I was about to reply that the key to my '79 300D and '83 300D were the same but
I just compared them and they are not the same. Similar key but not exactly the
same.

I guess I better not lose the key to my 116. Are the 123 keys still available I
wonder?

Next time I'm near my local locksmith I'll try to remember to ask if they have
any blanks.

Beats probably $1,000 for the conductor plate, especially if it’s got to be

[MBZ] No more 116/201/107 keys

key like used on the 201 etc.  Kid at the counter was very confused, not
sure what key it was etc.  He said he needed to get the old timer to
come up there.  Old timer shows up and immediately says "Hi Kaleb".

A lot of them aren’t buying jets necessarily, they’re just chartering far more.
The leasing services that let you buy “shares” in a plane or fleet have also
increased significantly over the past few years as well.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Planespotting

2022-04-14 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
Those subscription charter services are doing big business. The number of
private jets flying into our little local airport bringing the swells to the
resort lifestyle gated beach community on a weekend is most interesting to see.
The other day I saw a G5 or 6, it was big, getting ready to take off. Judging
by the windows it could probably haul 30-40 people easily.

There are those who also own them, might be a bunch of them here, or corporate
jets they use. A few years ago I started a little cycling group, we had a core
group but various people would join and drop over time. One ride there was this

Yeah you get to peel back the curtain a bit on the layers of the economy
when you start paying attention to private jet traffic. All that stuff
people say about the rich getting richer during covid is 100% true. Prices
of private jets are out of sight. If people have the means to fly private
they do, and there are a lot of people with the means.

Rebuilt steering box will transform the car; get one from a reputable place
or it will probably need to be replaced again in short order and you will
spend more on the 2x labor than you would have on a decent rebuilt box.

Re: [MBZ] Wow, I could have had a V12

2022-04-14 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
This is in my future so I am (not?) encouraged!  I would probably go
with the rebuilds from TH and be done with it, probably not worth the
time and bother associated with zylinder DIY rebuild.   And with the
cars going upupup in value it would not be a bad expenditure to get it
right.  Does not sound like a pleasant job but that's whatchagottado.

The German guy commenting on the vid made some interesting points about
the wiring too -- apparently the biodegradable wiring was not a German
gummint mandate but some cheap-out by MB with some suppliers of certain
wiring, not all of the wires in the looms.  He also said there were at
least 2 or 3 Euro suppliers for "new" looms.  i checked out one of them,
and I think I had looked at another one, so there are parts out there.
And again rewiring the looms is a DIY job but it is tricky and
time-consuming.  I have not dug into the wiring yet but I am sure that
and the throttle bodies are going to need some work.

I got the new rear spheres in but since I have the car up on blocks and
the rad out I have not fired it up and pumped up the suspension system
yet.  That will have to wait.

The joys of a 90s German supercar!  I am comforted it is not Italian
with unobtanium parts.

So here’s what I have to say about R129 top cylinders:

1.) There are numerous suppliers of “kits” on eBay and elsewhere for seal

That and there’s no telling how long the seals will last. This should be a once
in a ownership job, ideally, and in my opinion, justifies the complete rebuild
of the cylinders by a competent firm such as Top Hydraulics, who guarantees
their work *and* provides excellent support. Not only that, but some
components, such as the top locks in the top of the windshield frame, are
easily damaged if you attempt to disassemble them, and also require careful
alignment when reassembling for them to work correctly. Top Hydraulics aligns
and adjusts them when they rebuild them, cutting down the time it takes to get
everything working again after reassembly. Sure, it’s easily $800 (or more) for
a complete cylinder rebuild depending on the model, but it cuts to the
potential for future issues down to almost nothing. Not only that, but if you
goof up a cylinder, you’re buying a new one, which will cost you more than what
a rebuild of the complete set costs.

2.) R is an unpleasant job, mainly because you have to disassemble the back section
of the interior. Other than that, it’s just a brute force, time consuming job that requires
a lot of arm scratching gyrations to get to everything. Again, Top Hydraulics provides some
really good documentation on R of the cylinders and what to watch out for, as there
are some microswitches on the top frame that are critical to proper operation that are
easily damaged or goofed up when R’ing if you’re not careful.

It takes all of a day to remove and another day to install. Again, it’s a lot of
R that you can’t shortcut, you just have to take your time and do it
properly. It’s not difficult nor does it require special tools, it just takes time.

cylinders reasonable, or can it be done quicker than that?

I hope one of these never comes my way, I'd be tempted.
It seems doubtful that these cylinders would be all that much
harder to deal with, individually, than was the rear strut in
the 560 SEL. See:

I spent $9 on parts for it. That was 12 years ago, and it's
still holding up. (Not getting driven a lot, though.)

I engaged in discussions with the owner and some others in the comments. The
owner says he knew the issues and was ok with the deal (more money than sense I
guess) and that the weezurd gets a lot of views from the drama which makes
sense.

One guy, a German maybe, had interesting comments about the wire insulation
issue.

Mine in probably similar condition but better spec was $2250 which I think was
quite reasonable but I can address the issues myself. It will take some dineros
for parts and time buts that’s the deal with owning a 90s supercar. You know,
being an inthoooseeass and all.

Mr Wizard checks out the faults in a R129.
And explains why the $7500 price should have been more like $2700.
