It does. While the W126 isn’t quite the living room couch compared to the
W140, it’s still a very comfortable car to drive long distances in.

I’m reading some threads on the R129 forum about people retrofitting lumbar and
seat heating to their R129s, which is really easy to do. I’ll bet it would be
easy on the W126 as well. A lumbar support would really make it nice.

Absolutely. I saw one immediately after a blowout on my return trip.
Fortunately, the brake lights ahead of me helped identify where the remnants of
the tier were in the roadway.

I don’t draft off of trucks, and haven’t for some years. I used to have a
customer years ago who ran a small regional cartage company, and he talked
about how much they hated people that did this, as wella s how really dangerous
it was for a lot of reasons. I deferred to his experience and didn’t do it
again.

While crossing the great plains in a '63 beetle, I found there are three
low pressure areas around a semi-trailer that I could draft in: one on each
side near the rear axle set, and one directly behind. I preferred drafting
on the side, as I could see the road in front of me and the driver could
see me. Using this method, I could go as fast as the truck, typically
about 10 mph faster than the car would go solo. I didn't care about
improved MPG, I wanted to make time! On that trip I nicknamed the black
car "Remora". If the truck was in the right lane and wanted to pass a
slower vehicle, it was a bit of a dance for me to slow down and let him
move into my lane, without dropping out of the draft zone and getting left
behind. However, the low pressure zone directly behind the trailer was
usually pretty long, and I could fall back about fifty yard and still keep
with the truck.

There were more than a few truck drivers who would just shake me off or
strip me off using another vehicle, but it was entertaining and challenging
to see how fast I could go. I think I was able to get over 80 mph a few
times. This was in the late 80's and early 90's.

In the Winter of 1973, I drove the '61 MGA 29 hours, solo, from OKC to
Somerville, NJ, about 1500 miles, non-stop. I had planned to stop sometime
to sleep, but didn't feel tired until I figured it was too late to get
sufficient sleep before check-out time. I did stop twice for two hours on
the way, for supper and breakfast. I had to stop on the way back when the
water pump in the Olds 215 V8 crapped out as I was nearing St. Louis -
changed it in the parking lot of a FLAPS, and spent the night with a
friend.

The water pump and rear u-joint (original MG) were the weak links in that
car. The water pump didn't like the rapid increase in RPMs, but I couldn't
see taking longer than 6 seconds to hit 60 mph :-)

2016-02-24 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Sounds like the return trip from our honeymoon.

We took a cruise that docked in Ft. Lauderdale on Friday and we both had to be
back to work on Monday in Indianapolis. I had the family's hand me down
1971-1/2 Ford Pinto hatchback, 2000cc with a stick, which the new wife couldn't
drive.

Around northern GA I was getting sleepy, so we decided that she would drive. I
figured I could walk her through getting the car moving, and since it was all
interstate it wasn't like she would need to start and stop.

We got going and I nodded off. Next thing I know, I feel the car swaying and I
wake up to see us plummeting down the mountainside around Chattanooga at high
speed, in the rain, swerving in and out of trucks that are barreling down the
highway. I nearly soil myself.

If you have driven through Chattanooga you know where I'm talking about. Some
really serious grades, truck runoff ramps, etc. On top of all this it's early
in the morning, the light is poor and it's pouring down rain.

"Pull over. NOW!!!"

We pulled over, she killed the engine since she didn't know how to drive a
stick. I got in the car, slightly shell shocked, and drove the rest of the way
back to Indianapolis.

Oy!

I always heard the term "monkey butt" in our Harley days. I'm sure it was a
reference to orangutans, who have the bright red butts, suggesting that one's
butt resembled this after a long day riding. Our bikes always had Mustang seats
which are some of the most comfortable seats there are for motorcycles, so I
never experienced such maladies.

I did SFO to Tampa in under four days in my 1982 300SD, so that probably
qualifies.

Now Martha will need to find excuses for more
iron butt ( 1000 miles in a day) driving in this
new SDL. The chowdahheads could be one reason.
Cruisin' the coast could be another reason for a
shorter jaunt.

I used to finish a class at 10 pm in Columbia MO
at 10 pm, get packed up by 10:30 and then drive 8
hours to get home. Much of it on 2 lane roads.
I could not have done it in a lesser car. Still,
it was hard to stay awake.

There were a few weeks I finished one class at
noon, packed up and drove nearly 300 miles on 2
lane heavily prowled roads (55) to get set up for
the class the next day. It is hard to drive an
SDL for 6 hours and stay at 55 or less. I did
get stopped once, but they guy let me off.

The most fun I had was one night I was headed
home, got to the interstate for the last 1/2
hour, and this semi flew around me as I got on.
I stepped on it and got behind him and finished
the interstate stage at 90. The car loved it.

Re: [MBZ] THIS MERCEDES BENZ IS IN INCREDIBLE ORIGINAL CONDITION Throughout!

2016-02-23 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Since I don’t have the original owner’s service records, I can’t substantiate
engine rebuild/rod replacement, etc. However, with the help of my dealer guy
and the VMI from Mercedes, we were able to determine that some really
substantial work, possibly as much as five figures worth, was done under
warranty on the car at around 43k in 1993. The independent shop who took care
of it for some years knew the car but couldn’t recall anything specific as far
as major work - all they could tell me (and this was the son of the owner, who
has taken over since the owner’s retirement) was that the PPO would drop the
car off and write a check. I suspect they made a lot of boat payments for the
shop owner based on what they did tell me.

Considering that it runs very well with no noise, almost no smoke, and used no
oil in a thousand mile high speed drive, I’m satisfied that there’s nothing
sinister lurking under the hood or elsewhere.

So that’s where I’m at. Thanks a lot to Curly, Jaime and others who helped me
parse out the information I could find to help make the decision on whether or
not to be comfortable with it. I am.

I know it hasn’t had mounts for over six years/30k miles. That’s probably not
a service interval, but mounts are cheap relatively speaking and I don’t mind
putting a set on it. Once that’s done if I still feel like it’s vibrating too
much I’ll check elsewhere. Do realize that I have been driving vergassers for
nearly 15 years, so my point of reference is pretty far from the operating
characteristics of a diesel. As I become more familiar and comfortable with
the car I my realize that my concerns are unfounded.

Re: [MBZ] THIS MERCEDES BENZ IS IN INCREDIBLE ORIGINAL CONDITION Throughout!

2016-02-23 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Dan,

Motor mounts may be required to isolate the vibration, but if the engine
has issues (usually minor) then new mounts are just a band-aid.

Rough idle can be due to issues at the injectors and delivery valves.
There is a guy Mark something on Peach Parts, located in Columbia SC, that
will clean / test / set / balance your injectors for about $120, I can post
his contact info if interested. His Nom de Plume is Greazzer. I had him
service the set in my '87 wagon, he did great work. My engine at idle is
rock steady, no visible movement, no vibration in the cockpit. This summer
I'm probably going to send him the injectors from my '95 sedan to be
completely rebuilt with new nozzles.

If you go into the delivery valves, which I consider a minor job well worth
doing on any new MB diesel, a special splined socket is required. I always
replace the copper washer, spring, and o-ring on each valve. However,
clean clean clean is the order of the day, as the least contamination of
the DV or the hard injector line can result in clogged or damaged DV or
injector, and there is a special torque sequence for the DVs. This job is
possible with the intake manifold in place, but best done with that removed
(new gaskets required). At that point, one had might as well replace all
the hard injector line plastic clips and rubber pads under them, and also
refresh the glow plugs, and then none of those things will need to be
touched for another 100k miles or so.

Collapsed hydraulic compensators (aka lifters) can also cause idle
problems, but you'd probably get some lifter clack-clack if that were the
case.

Yes, I need an auto now, because of my CIDP condition, hard to get my left
foot reliably (EVERY time, that is) on the clutch pedal. So far, no problem
getting right foot on brake.

Oh, and I really don't want an auto 240D.

Re: [MBZ] THIS MERCEDES BENZ IS IN INCREDIBLE ORIGINAL CONDITION Throughout!

2016-02-23 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
After driving the 350SDL for a few days I can understand Wilton's affection for
these cars. While I will say that it's not as plush or comfortable as my W140s
or W220, it drives almost the same as a vergasser. The OM603 is amazingly
smooth, powerful and quiet compared to the OM617, which is the only MB diesel I
have had direct experience with up to now. I find it interesting that it seems
like it wants to go fast, with me thinking I'm at speed only to realize I'm
well over it!

I do get some vibration in the cabin at idle, but a new set of motor mounts is
in and waiting for me at the dealer. I'll put them on this weekend and see if
that helps. Otherwise, apart from the smell and minor noise at cold startup,
it's tough to tell this is a diesel.

It definitely seems heavier than the later cars, but I'm not sure if this is
due to steering geometry or what.

I've got nearly 400 miles on this tank of fuel and I still have over a 1/4 tank
left, too.

My '83 240D is exactly the same as the one first discussed on this string
except for having 200K miles and a few very minor dings inside and out.
It's always been garaged or parked under a carport and has no sun damage.
Windows, A/C, heat, etc. are all manual. No sunroof. I bought it from a German
prof who bought it new in Germany.
I'm going to sell it as soon as I figure out what these cars in very good

$5000 at a local car meet several years ago.

2016-02-22 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
The floors, I am happy to report, are in BETTER than factory new condition,
for the following reasons..

1. Arizona car.. NO RUST.. EVER... "It's a dry heat"

2. The broken oil pressure gage supply line broke INSIDE the car, so the
COCO floor mats AND the stock factory carpets were soaked in oil for the
entire time the car was in storage.. sloshing in seasoned diesel oil... NO
RUST Possible.. EVER..

3. Interior is now soaking in 3 inches of kitty litter to soak up said oil
residue, changed out every few months while in my personal "Dry Heat"
storage facility..

This however does raise an important questions...
"How much more than the asking price demanded for car #1 should I demand
for this car with a new engine?"
and
I have more than one engine.. one NA .. one Turbo [with complete turbo
drive train] ... "Which should I use?"

I purchased a 300TD that had lost its oil at 75 mph when the engine
collapsed onto the oil cooler lines due to completely worn motor mounts.
Not a pretty sight, although I purchased the vehicle anyway due to its
nearly pristine body and interior... Following a drive train transplant
from another 1983 300TD, the car is driving me daily and happily.
