Got a spray bottle of Purple Power today and will try it if it's not raining
tomorrow. Also got a spray bottle of 303 at West Marine and will use that
when I do the 240D inside.
It's been cold here off and on; down to 34F a couple of nights ago, but it's
warmed up and is 67F at 9:00 EST; was 76F today.

I have a set of nozzles for my pressure washer (if I can find them) that

Re: [MBZ] nice article BUT

2013-02-06 Thread Gerry Archer
That's an idea. I have two old steel propane tanks and the relief valve off
a water heater which probably opens at 80-100 lbs. Would have to buy a
turkey fryer burner.

And a pressure relief valve of some sort.

Michael E. Esh

Go to the rental shop and get a wallpaper remover if you want a hose with
steam coming out, though it has very little pressure as the tank is just
a pot with a propane heater -- not like the old steam cleaners that shot
out a pretty good pressurized steam stream. You could probably also make
a serviceable one with an old propane tank and a turkey fryer burner, use
a long bit of radiator/heater hose for the working end and some sort of
pipe fitting on the end with a nozzle of some kind, like an air nozzle
with the valve.

The $20 steamer to go with the $2 oil sucker.

That only works on some parts of the country, unless you have
temp/humidity controlled garages. In many parts of the country, cold
air is replaced frequently by warm moist air. This causes condensation
on metal parts that are still cold. This leads to the cad plating
(Bright) being eaten away, leaving some oxidized zinc (dull) on steel
parts. Cars I have bought from warm dry climates with shiny cad plating
turn dull in just one winter exposed to this kind of weather. Even
cars stored in unheated garages have this happen. It is accelerated by
salt on roads, but it happens to cars in storage too.

going after it with steam still did not do much. Pressure wash with blasting

That only works on some parts of the country, unless you have
temp/humidity controlled garages. In many parts of the country, cold air
is replaced frequently by warm moist air. This causes condensation on
metal parts that are still cold. This leads to the cad plating (Bright)
being eaten away, leaving some oxidized zinc (dull) on steel parts.
Cars I have bought from warm dry climates with shiny cad plating turn
dull in just one winter exposed to this kind of weather. Even cars
stored in unheated garages have this happen. It is accelerated by salt
on roads, but it happens to cars in storage too.

The valve cover looks anodized but with a lot of embedded "dirt" that
doesn't come off with parts cleaner. Next time I have the valve cover off
I'll try yours and Jamies technique.
Know what you mean about anodized trim. It was the same situation back when
nearly everyone had aluminum frame windows.

Gerry

From: "Dan Penoff"
Anodized aluminum such as what MB used for window moulding is notoriously
difficult, almost impossible, to shine up once the finish has started to
oxidize.
There used to be a trick where you cleaned it as well as possible then put
a clear finish on it. It actually looked pretty decent, but there is no
removing the oxidation once it starts. Not without damage, that is.

Before the conversion, the york would just suck the car down in

Its easy, just take everything apart and clean it piece by piece :-)

I had done a valve job on this car when I bought it and went through
everything carefully. I replaced lots of little bits, and cleaned
everything as I went along. The valve cover was done with a soft abrasive
wheel of some kind.

I like continuous rotary motion much better than recip motion.

I've never seen an automotive compressor that wasn't
reciprocating. The number and type of pistons vary,
as does the rotary/reciprocating conversion mechanism,
but there are still pistons. 10, in the case of our
Nippondensos.

If the old electrical/plumbing analog holds, it'd take
three pistons in order to produce more-or-less continuous
power transmission. The York has two, so it's going to
be a lot more lumpy.

The York on my '67 110 was on a heavy frame on the right side. The mounting
bolts to the engine kept working loose, so I finally discarded it. It
didn't work well and air conditioning wasn't considered a necessity back
then either. Besides that it dropped the usual 32 mpg around town to less
than 30 mpg.
If the engine had idled smoothly, it probably would have been OK, but
neither the Indy nor I ever got it smoothed out short of a new pump which
was too costly.

I think they are considered more "modern" and do not take quite so much

I know there are brackets available to swap from the old York style but I

increase the idle a bit. This was back in 2003.

It was wonderful... I had that system so cold I could get the chrome on the
dash over the vents to frost over. And driving in traffic was no issue
thanks to the fan and higher idle speed.

Before the conversion, the york would just suck the car down in traffic.
Idle speed too low, vent and engine temps rising, etc.

Here are some photos:

No, thanks. I just like a rotary-type compressor more so than the
pounding/banging recip ones, actually, much like aircraft hydraulic
pump/motor, aren't they - with rotating cam that makes several little
pistons recip. So, actually, they're combination rotary/recip, aren't they?
So, in that respect, they're not true rotary in the sense of Wankel or gas
turbine.

I think they are considered more "modern" and do not take quite so much
power to run. Lighter weight too?

I know there are brackets available to swap from the old York style but
I hear some of the brackets do not fit well.
