Re: [MOSAIC] teacher desk or no?
Until I began teaching only Art, I always had a teacher desk, and feel no need to apologize for that. When I was teaching with a partner in the multiage classroom, we had our desks facing and butted up against each other, and would debrief at the end of the day. I have never worked in a classroom with decent storage or counter space, and like to have drawers to close and a place to keep what I need. The student who was person of the day was always allowed to sit at the teacher desk for that day, anytime I was not using it (which was practically never, during class time). As for kidney tables, I very much dislike them, they way they put the teacher at the head of the group. If I can, I just get rid of them and trade them out for a rectangle or round table. I always did my guided reading groups at a round table. I would have all my students read aloud at the same time, at their own paces, and would walk around and listen to them from just behind them, with my face next to theirs. Yes, it was weird at first, but it didn't take them long to just ignore the others. Renee On Aug 10, 2009, at 9:50 PM, Darlene Cook wrote: My desk is facing the wall with my computer and phone on it. For many years, I did without a teacher's desk and all of my things took up every available space in the room! So, this year, I am back to a teacher's desk, in the corner, and shelf space for my teaching things. I am going to try very hard to stay contained in that area. We'll see! Re: [MOSAIC] teacher desk or no?
I still have a teacher desk, although I've downsized from a whole teacher corner. That corner has become another reading nook and a writing center. My goal is to get rid of the desk but I'm not sure where I'll station myself. Perhaps my laptop can go on top of a file cabinet while it's charging, since I'm tall enough. The students already have six computers for their own use. I could work at our small group rectangular table after school. Hmmm...maybe I'll try this out this year. _ Get free photo software from Windows Live http://www.windowslive.com/online/photos?ocid=PID23393::T:WLMTAGL:ON:WL:en-US:SI_PH_software:082009 ___ Mosaic mailing list Mosaic@literacyworkshop.org To unsubscribe or modify your membership please go to http://literacyworkshop.org/mailman/options/mosaic_literacyworkshop.org. I asked an older semi-retired farmer/carpenter to build me a podium. I gave him a sketch with dimensions and asked for adjustable shelves, a drawer, and a built in pencil cup. Also, WHEELS so I can move it about easily. He ended up building me the most beautiful, pulpit-looking solid oak podium. He really enjoyed the challenge! Here's a photo: http://www.flickr.com/photos/28083...@n07/2743645031/in/set-7215760647159883 1/ AND the bonus is it's MINE. Cost me about $300 out of my own pocket, but it goes wherever I go. I know that office supply catalogs have similar metal podiums if you are allowed to request items like that from your building principal. They also run about $300. Re: [MOSAIC] teacher desk or no?
Yup. Which takes up the most room--the kidney table or the desk?? Hands down, the kidney table, right? That really buys you increased space. I was struck when I was watching my DVD of Jan Richardson last night how silly it was that she was using a kidney table. What she needed was as narrow a table as she could find. I have one that's only 24 wide. She had to drape herself clear across the kidney table to listen/talk to her 3 little ones. That stretching and twisting motion will buy her a lot of back troubles in time. If you're at a narrow table for guided reading, you all have access to everything. Yes, she did need some space for materials, but not the entire area of a kidney table. Those kidney tables are really space hogs--and have far more disadvantages than advantages. When I pull small groups the kids grab a rag rug from our hamper/basket and sit in a tight circle around me on the floor. I sit on a stool that has wheels. I found it at Loews or Menards or Home Depot. It's something like what a car mechanic uses to scoot around. It's very sturdy and it raises and lowers. Here is one link I just found: www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_375713_375713 I can wheel up closer to each of them as they are reading for a quick running record. The stool on wheels is GREAT when I want to zoom around to each child during writing workshop to conference with them while they work at their tables. I gave up my teacher's desk years ago. I claim a corner where the computer desk is (two computers) and use stacking trays on the counter for each of my small group books and the shelves right there for my teacher stuff. I have one student desk up against the counter for my lesson plan book. If you don't have counters use 2-3 extra student desks up against the wall. Re: [MOSAIC] teacher desk or no?
I completely agree with removing the desk and using the mac table or kidney table as your desk. I positioned mine so that I have shelves and cabinets behind me. This aloud me to utilize the space as a desk when the kids were not in the room and clear off the space for my guided reading table. I think you will love the space this will bring you. Hi everyone, I was wondering if you had a teacher's desk in your room or instead used the small group table or another table as your desk. I like having something that is mine and off limits to the kids, but I also know that it's kind of a waste of space b/c most of the stuff that is in my desk could be store somewhere else. It would open up some space in my room if I used the macaroni table as a desk. Thought or ideas? Re: [MOSAIC] teacher desk or no?
I am so not a kidney person. I love art and it has always been important to me to have lots of surface space for projects, so rectangles are where it's at for me. I gave up my desk on the advice of a student who felt perpetually driven to clean it up (it just became a pile on). Seven year olds can be very wise. Bottom line, what you choose and where you work with small groups has to work for you. Having just finished three years of coaching, I saw effective small group instruction delivered on any number, shapes and sizes of tables (and some ineffective in the same manner). What you do is more important that where you do it. I have pondered getting rid of my desk but I need to sit at a high table with a higher chair at the end of the day in Kindergarten. I can only take the knee high tables for so long!!! hehehe I am considering getting rid of the horseshoe table instead. I plan to be doing more conferences/strategy groups and I think we will meet on the rug. Re: [MOSAIC] teacher desk or no?
Have the janitor move the desk out of your room and just take a look around. That should help you decide!! They have wonderful drawer units available now that you can use for the things that are yours that take very little space.
