I'm not sure what you're after. As long as you set a password on a
user's account, they must use the password to gain access to MySQL.
Have you found an exception to that?

Hi,

This is a known problem with solaris tar, I suggest you use gnu tar for
solaris, This should solve your current problem.

You can get a pre-build package of gnu tar at www.sunfreeware.com

Problem Running a Script File

Hi All,

I am trying to run the following syntax on a Windows NT Box.

mysql -h host -u user -pPassword Scriptfile

If this command is entered into a console window all is well (it works
fine).
This will also WORK if it is entered in a batch file and then run in the
batch file.

This command need needs to be scheduled and run unattended.
For security reasons I wanted to put the mysql -h host -u user -pPassword
part
of the command in a compiled file.
So I've written a small VB app to shell the command out.
It fails when the Scriptfile portion is added to the command.

The above syntax will also fail to run from Windows Run box.

Fail, Fails = Can see the console window open and the help text scroll
through.

It appears, possibly to have to do with the character

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Re: mysql.org

2001-07-15 Thread B. van Ouwerkerk

Hi,

Sorry.. can't keep my mouth shut..

A few comments on the legal matter: GPL has been spoken about more then
enough here..
Trademark: If no license or agreement exists which allows nusphere to use
MYSQL AB's trademark it's probably illegal. One could think of situations
where it might be perfectly legal.. MYSQL AB must act otherwise MYSQL AB
will probably loose the right to use their trademark and the right to
defend it againts others.
Having a word in a domainname that corresponds with a trademark does not
always mean you're in violation of a trademark.. one might have obtained a
license to use the trademark.. or one might have a trademark of their own
with the word MYSQL and not violate any trademark..
This is in a nutshell how most laws I've seen work. I studied a few laws
which have to do with intellectual property..
NOTE: I did use the word probably quite often.. It's not always sure..

If I look at the mysql.org website it looks to me like I found the home of
MySQL. This is what most visitors which are unfamiliar with MySQL might or
will think. It's a very thin line.. I know..
If nushere want to provide the mysql community with addons or
enhancements.. why can't that be done via mysqladdons.com (if that one is
still free).. Or even via mysql.org but without attempting to look like the
home of MySQL..
I don't think it's generally a good idea to split a community amongst

Here is the problem... MySQL seems to open too many threads and die...
(i.e., if I run top mysqld sems to take up over 90% of the CPU cycles,
for hours, if I let it.) Once it does this, I can't shut it down with
mysqladmin. It will not respond to anything... No queries, no mysqladmin
functions. Nothing. I had a friend of mine write a monitor script,
which simply checks every 45 seconds to see the CPU usage of mysqld, and if
it is over 90% for longer than 2 minutes, it kill -9's it, and restarts it.

What you are getting looks like a mutex contention problem.

Make sure you build MySQL with OpenBSD native threads and not with MIT
threads.

If you use native threads, use our super-smack program to find out how
OpenBSD threads perform. If they don't perform well (compare results
with Linux 2.4 kernel), write to OpenBSD.

I respectfully disagree with your suggestion that such a site

I think it is a fine distinction to
say the (slight?) difference between mysql.com and mysql.org
would lead to confusion. Are you confused by the extant
mysql.net? What about xmysql.com? There have been arguments
by both parties that these so-called support sites are in
everyone's interest. This practice is common, just think
 of linux-help.com/linux-support.com/linux-this-or-that.com
ad infinitum, and all these play in certain niches without
necessarily confusing the linux user, or to-be linux user.

I see one HUGE difference between these support sites and .net,
in regards to .com: Every one but .net clearly state that
this is a product of MySQL AB, tell people about and make
very explicit links mysql.com.

I came across mysql.org through a search engine some days before
this discussion exploded. I, too, wondered why there was no
mention of the people behind the web page, what the intent
of the page was, etc. One thing I did notice, though, was that
not mention AT ALL was made of either MySQL AB or mysql.com.
This is still the case today.

While people may download the software and documentation, they
are completely cut off from the existing community @ .com.

I am in no position to discuss the technical merits or legal
issues concerning the NuSphere debacle in this context; As such,
my point of view is limited to the fact that I see .org as an
attempt to pull people away from/split up the community
surrounding .com. I wonder why anyone would consider this
a bright idea.

Simple Array Question

2001-07-15 Thread Douglas Brantz

Simple question:
Using multiple checkboxes and assigning the value from mysql field with.

a loop showing all the data I need. I am created a form to delete
selected users from database. So I loop through all the ids and this is
the checkbox line. not exactly but close.
print input type=\checkbox\ name=\idnum\ value=\$id\; in perl

Now I need to grab all the idnums and make an array in my action
perl-cgi script
my @idnums = param(idnum);
my blah = $query-param(blah);
etc..

My question is how do I make the simpliest loop to delete each idnum
from the database.
the way I have it now it only deletes the first selection.

foreach(@idnums){
$theid=$_;
delete from database name where id = $theid
 # does other things sends email to user
}

There must be a better way? can I find the length of the array with
$length=@idnums;
$theid = 0;
if ($theid  $length) {
delete from database name where id = $idnums($theid)
#send email to user and other stuff
$theid = $theid +1
}
}else{

The MySQL trademark is registered in Sweden and 13 other countries. In the

Fax communication sometimes don't work... (An aspect sofar

I believe it is Lorne Cooper, President of NuSphere that needs to agree. I
do not know where the fax thing came from, because the letter referring to

Problem inserting array of rows

2001-07-15 Thread David

I am trying to insert an array of rows or values from a PHP form into a
MySQL database. There are six columns in the table songs: id, songname,
rating, video, album_id, movie.

Here is what I get when I submit the form
Add songs for Record Array
INSERT INTO songs VALUES (' 1, blah', ' ***', ' 45', ' 2', ' ')
id[0]=: 2 this is debug code
INSERT Failed, check the code.this is debug code

The problem seems to be with this part:

for ($i=0; $i= $songsinalbum; $i++) {
  $vals .=, ('$id[$i], $songname[$i]', '$rating[$i]', '$video[$i]',
'$album_id[$i]',
'$movie[$i]');
}

// $vals=preg_replace(^,, , $vals);
$vals=preg_replace('/^,/', '', $vals); // chop leading comma

Complete code:
When the user presses submit on the form this part executes:

  mysql_connect(192.168.0.1, mysqluser, mypassword);

$vals=' ';
for ($i=0; $i= $songsinalbum; $i++) {
  $vals .=, ('$id[$i], $songname[$i]', '$rating[$i]', '$video[$i]',
'$album_id[$i]',
'$movie[$i]');
}

// $vals=preg_replace(^,, , $vals);
$vals=preg_replace('/^,/', '', $vals); // chop leading comma

$qry=INSERT INTO songs VALUES $vals;

echo $qry;

$res=mysql_query($qry);

Here is part of the form:

?
$i = 1;
 while ($i = $songsinalbum) {
?

TD align=rightID: /TDTDinput type=text name=id[]
size=3br/TD

Hi

there is no UTF-8 possibility for

How can I tell mysql to send to clients utf-8 if everything on the database is latin-1
?

if
--default-character-set=UTF-8 would exists in shared/charsets,
does it mean I have to recode all the content of my database or
does it mean mysql would convert it dynamically when sending something to a client ?

has anyone got the same problem ?

looked in the docs, but not a word on utf-8.

Just to clarify the U.S. trademark point raised here ...

The fact that it is in the mail, in progress, or whatever is really
immaterial.

It is not at all unusual for the formal application for trademarks, service
marks, patents, copyrights, etc. to come months or even years after the
product's introduction. According to my Patent Attorney, you are generally
protected so long as you can demonstrate proof of 'first use' in the event
of a dispute or contest by another applicant.

For example, my company introduced a product in April of 1998 at a trade
show, but didn't start the wheels in motion to secure the trademark until a
few months ago (lawyers cost $$$!). Among the exhibits our attorney is
filing with our application is a trade publication reporting on the show
where our product was mentioned and copies of literature and logos we used.

Monty, David and their associates can point to mountain of magazine
articles, trade publications, websites, etc. to prove their claim of first
use.

In the same vein ... they must aggressively pursue their disagreement with
NuSphere. Failure to take legal action to protect a trademark or service
mark would be serious mistake, and could result in them losing any
protections they would otherwise have.

MySQL doesn't create any Registry keys. The only registry entry that relates
directly to MySQL (in addition to the one Monty's InstallShield sets so you
can uninstall) is the one the Service Control Manager creates when you
install the service.

If you install MyODBC, you'll need to account for the keys your DSN's need

Re:Replication and InnoDB

2001-07-15 Thread Heikki Tuuri

Hi!

As far as I know, replication works with InnoDB and BDB,
and some users have at least tested it with InnoDB.
MySQL only writes complete transactions to the binlog
and therefore ROLLBACK does not need to be implemented
in replication.

LOAD TABLE FROM MASTER does not currently work
with InnoDB. Look at the Restrictions section in the InnoDB
manual at http://www.innodb.com for workarounds.

Since the slave executes the binlog in the autocommit=1 mode,
you may have to set innodb_flush_log_at_trx_commit=0 in
my.cnf of the slave if you have performance problems with the
commits in the slave.

In crashes there exists the following problem: the MySQL binlog
flush and the InnoDB log flush are not synchronized. It means
that after a master crash, in some cases the binlog may contain
less (or more) transactions than the InnoDB log. Thus, after a master
crash, when you restart the master and InnoDB does its crash recovery
using it own logs, the master database may end up in a different state
from the slave. Then you have to manually resolve the out-of-sync
problem. For example, copy the slave database to be the new master.
Of course, since MyISAM is a non-transactional table type, users
of MyISAM replication need to resolve the same out-of-sync problems.

Regards,

Heikki

Copied message:
...
Sinisa,

SM It is the same. Replication works already with all table handlers,
SM but all that remains to be solved is ROLLBACK.

What could be the problem is servers are recording in their
binary log only committed transactions ?
Why should ROLLBACK be implemented in replication ?
If only committed transactions are recorded in the binary log then
if a server crashes and it has to rollback it's uncommitted
transactions, this has no impact on the replicating scheme isn't it ?
Let me know if I'm wrong.

Re: Problem inserting array of rows

Re: Parallel Databases

2001-07-15 Thread Michael Widenius

Hi!

I'm writing in as to how I can contribute in the development in Parallel
databasing. I understand MySQL currently supports replications which is a
nice way of keeping live backups of a mysql server, however is hardly the
preferred method when dealing with load-balancing and redundancy, just
because it becomes a burden at application level to manage your selects to
load-balance and any update, insert, alter statements to the parent server.

In MySQL 4.0 we will make it very easy for the client to automaticly
send updates to the current master and queries to any of the slaves.
We will provide both automatic handling of this and also provide a way
to force a statement to sent to the master or to a slave.

I'm interested in implementing Parallel databasing such as the feature
found in Oracle. This would involve (i imagine) some very complex
algorithms and some very sophisticated monitor and checking systems however
I do have a very heavy c/c++ knowledge.

If someone could contact me and update me on the current status of a true
parallel databasing support in mysql I'd love to hear about any progress
made and how I can help. I tried to subscribe to this mailing list but it
seems as if the subscribing system is broken at the moment. Please reply
back to my email address, fyi.

 Thanks,
 Trevor F. Linton ([EMAIL PROTECTED])

We here at MySQL AB don't have any developers that are working on
this. We regard parallel databases something that will be very
interesting in the future, but for the moment we have to concentrate
on extending the current functionality and the things we have on the
TODO for the MySQL 4.x versions.

If you start working on this and have any questions about the
internals of MySQL, feel free to mail them to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

On this mailing list there has been some discussions about parallel
servers in the past; Please check some of the searchable email
archives that you can find on www.mysql.com for this topic.

changing mysql prompt

2001-07-15 Thread Michael Widenius

Hi!

Nissim Hi , is there a way to change the default mysql prompt to have the current
Nissim GMT time embedded in the mysql command line prompt and look something
Nissim like this
Nissim (and also have the time increase every time the carriage return is pressed)
Nissim [GMT:193/12:13:45] Mysql
Nissim [GMT:193/12:13:46] Mysql
Nissim :
Nissim :
Nissim [GMT:193/12:13:58] Mysql

Nissim is it possible?

Nissim thanks

Nissim

For the moment this isn't possible. We have thought a long about
providing a configurable prompt for the command line tool but we
haven't yet found time to do this.
I have now updated our TODO with this, which should ensure that we
don't forget about this next time we update the command line client.

Monty

Re: innobase 4gb rows

2001-07-15 Thread Heikki Tuuri

Hi!

I am back from holiday!

I guess using SELECT INTO OUTFILE (= mysqldump)
and LOAD FROM INFILE is as fast as converting
InnoDB-MyISAM-InnoDB.

I assume Ryan has a file system with 2 GB files?
The outfile or the MyISAM table will be very big.
If you do not have 2 GB files then you have to
SELECT your table INTO OUTFILE in pieces, not the
whole table at a time.

Note that the new BLOB code is not well tested yet, though
I have not received any bug reports for it. It may be best to
experiment first with pieces of your table instead of doing
the whole, maybe several hours long, conversion at once.

 well on this table.

By work so well do you mean work quickly?
It may be faste to convert the tables to MyISAM tables, upgrade, and
convert them back to InnoDB tables. But I've not compared the speed
of the two operations. It's more of a hunch.

Re: mysql.org

2001-07-15 Thread Robert Alexander

Monty et al and fellow list people,

I've been following this thread with interest for the last couple days, have read all
the postings (unfortunate flames included), and my opinion has generally been: well,
there's been an unfortunate break down in communication between MySQL and NuSphere,
I'm sure it's just a mis-understanding, and it'll get sorted out amicably soon.

Then I actually went and looked at the mysql.org site.

Now I find I must strongly agree with what Andy Wooley wrote:

At 15:05 +0100 2001/07/15, Andy Woolley wrote:
The impression I get from the .org site, is that they are promoting a
product called MySQL, and that MySQL AB (found at mysql.com) is a different
product all together. This, is in my opinion is simply not on.

I have been using MySQL for many years and I am now wondering if there
actually is a difference between MySQL and MySQL AB simply because mysql.org
are implying such a fact. Their web site is also giving me the impression
that they are responsible for the development of MySQL.I know Nusphere have
given both time and money to the development of MySQL but I really don't
think it quite justifies building a web site with the intention of deceiving
users that may not know the full history of MySQL.

I'm no lawyer but I would say that the content on mysql.org is very
misleading and should be changed, pronto.

I got very much the same impression.

Let me expand a bit...

1. it makes sense for an 'Open Source' project to have a .org TLD, many of them do.

2. on the Home page it says:
 - its a center for free downloads, information and communication,
as well as all the files you need to build applications based on
MySQL, the #1 open source database.

 - mySQL.org offers easy access to the best binaries and source
   available to database programmers.

 - For those willing to help maintain the code, documentation,
or support resources, please email [EMAIL PROTECTED]

 - For those of you interested in getting other sites or books added
to our list of MySQL resources, please send email to
   [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Then, at the bottom, it says that it's not affiliated with some company called 'MySQL
AB.'

Nowhere does it say that 'MYSQL AB' *is* MySQL: the company that has created,
developed, promoted, and is the *owner* of the MySQL database engine. It looks very
much like 'MySQL AB' is some other company that happens to have a similar name,
especially considering that most people will know it simply as MySQL, not by the
formal 'MySQL AB.'

So it would be very easy for a recent arrival to assume that mysql.org is *the* MySQL
site -- there's really nothing telling them otherwise.

The creators of the mysql.org site did not go to any effort to make the situation
clear -- on the contrary, it seems to step very carefully *around* mentioning that
MySQL is someone else's property.

Something like this doesn't happen by accident and, legal-babble aside, these are,
quite simply, not the actions of one who's respectful of other's work and property,
and not the actions of one who's dedicated to open communication and a win/win
partnership. I find it dishonourable.

It leaves a pretty bad taste in my mouth.

Can you tell us a bit more about the BLOB code?

In MyISAM you could gain performance by seperating variable part fields
from the fixed length fields. Does that still hold for InnoDB tables? (I
know that some other databases, like oracle, can do the seperation for
you.) Are the blobs slower or faster then the MyISAM counterparts? (Or
about as fast, etc.)

BLOB / TEXT support was one of the few reasons I haven't tried out
InnoDB so far (since I need to store large articles), but now that that
limitation is lifted I want to try it out ASAP.

Re: MySQL Variables

2001-07-15 Thread Michael Collins

At 1:47 PM -0500 7/14/01, Paul DuBois wrote:
Any solution I've tried using the LassoMySQL/var/my.cnf or
~/.my.cnf files affect both the special installation as well as
the standard MySQL installation. I find I will always get the
standard port.

Settings in the [client] group of your ~/.my.cnf file would affect any
client that you run. I would expect that all clients would therefore
connect to the same server...

The clients won't use the option file in the data directory. They will
only use the shared option file /etc/my.cnf, and the .my.cnf in your home
directory. You might be better off creating aliases that specify the
options on the command line.

Thank you Paul with your help so far.

As a reminder my situation is having a Mac OS X server with two MySQL
server binaries installed (with a complete set of MySQL installed
files in the two separate locations). One uses the standard
/usr/local/bin location for MySQL the other installs into the
Application directory. I am trying to find an easier way to not
have to specify the socket option each time I use one of the MySQL
client programs for databases hosted by Lasso MySQL. As an example to
run these commands they need to use the form:

root% ./bin/mysql --socket=/tmp/SpecialMySQL.sock MCExample
/Import_MCExample.mysql

root% ./bin/mysqlshow --socket=/tmp/SpecialMySQL.sock

root% ./bin/mysqladmin --socket=/tmp/SpecialMySQL.sock create newDatabaseName

In short, it becomes burdensome to type
--socket=/tmp/LassoMySQL.sock each time.

So what I am left with is that I will need to create a startup file
to map the command you type in to the actual command with the -socket
specified?

Example, create a .cshrc (Mac OS X uses the tcsh shell) and locate it
in my user directory or in /etc (I am not sure about this?). Set up
the alias lines as follows:

alias mysqldump /Applications/special/specialMySQL/bin/mysqldump
--socket=/tmp/SpecialMySQL.sock

alias mysqladmin /Applications/special/specialMySQL/bin/mysqladmin
--socket=/tmp/SpecialMySQL.sock

alias mysql /Applications/special/specialMySQL/bin/mysql
--socket=/tmp/SpecialMySQL.sock

I would actually need to use a somewhat different name for the alias
as this will interfere with use of the command for the standard
install.

The question though is will parameters be passed in? Will it then
work, for example, to import a file using:

root% mysql MCExample /Import_MCExample.mysql

I cannot test it since so far the alias file idea does not work, I
put the .cshrc file into my home directory, logged out and started a
new telnet session.

Now the problem is it only inserts one row into the table, when there should be
 more than one row inserted.

Of course it does, you have to enclose the insert statement into

re: mysql.org

2001-07-15 Thread Thomas J Keller

Well, I have gone and looked more closely at mysql.org.

I am forced to confess that I find several disheartening features at this
site. I am unwilling at this juncture to typify these issues as deliberate or
ill-intentioned, but I will say that NuSphere needs to make a concerted,
immediate effort to resolve these points.

1) While they do point out that they are not affliated, and provide a link to
MySQL AB, they do not state why this is relevant, or why someone might WANT to
go to MySQL AB.

2) They do not explicitly claim to be the developers of MySQL, but they also do
not explicitly state that they are not. While experienced MySQL users would
recognize this fact, new-comers or persons searching for information in support
of a product decision would most likely not recognize that distinction.

3) The tone and content of the requests for participation and assistance in
development do suggest that participating in the NuSphere mysql.org development
effort is identical to participating in MySQL development, which is clearly not
the case.

In my opinion, Nusphere needs to take the following actions immediately:

1) Explicitly and prominently identify on their front page, the ownership of
the MySQL trademark as belonging to MySQL AB, and point at the mysql.com
website.

2) Clearly delineate the difference between NuSphere MySQL and MySQL, on the
front page, and prominently.

3) Cause their site not to resemble mysql.com in any way related to design or
format.

4) NuSphere needs to clarify the extent and nature of their investments in
MySQL. Investment in their inhouse products does not qualify as investment in
the MySQL server product. Monies paid to MySQL AB, subject to the details of
whatever agreements said monies were paid under, may qualify.

None of these are onerous, and doing these things will go a long way to
putting NuSphere back into good graces with this community and with the folks at
MySQL AB.

As a separate issue, I will offer my comments re: the domain name/trademark
dispute:

It is my opinion that regardless of what rights NuSphere may believe,
correctly or otherwise, they have to the use of the MySQL trademark, that the
only honorable and acceptable action for them to take is to transfer the domain
name to MySQL AB immediately. This is a matter of ethics and courtesy (and good
PR), not legality.

As for the issue of trademark infringement and protection, it is true that
failure to take appropriate legal action to defend a trademark can, and
sometimes does, lead to loss of legal protection for that trademark. This being
the case, NuSphere and MySQL AB need to work up a written agreement which
asserts that the trademark MySQL does explicitly belong to MySQL AB, and that
NuSphere formally acknowledges that ownership. Such an agreement gives MySQL AB
proof of defense, which is their largest single concern (in my interpretation).
The actual use of the trademark by NuSphere is an issue that should be settled
betwen NuSphere and MySQL, or in the courts, if that unfortunate necessity
arises.

Hey, maybe I answered part of my own question (thanks to the book
Essential System Administration from O'Reilly). There is a file on
Mac OS X at:
/usr/share/init/tcsh/rc that starts with the following:

##
# TCSH Expanded C-Shell INITIALIZATION FILE
#
# Wilfredo Sanchez Jr. | [EMAIL PROTECTED]
# July 09, 1992
#
# MIT Project Athena
#
# ORIGINAL SOURCES: /usr/athena/lib/init/cshrc (ATHENA REL 7.3P)
##

Adding the following and restarting the telnet session seems to work:

alias specialmysqldump
/Applications/Special/SpecialMySQL/bin/mysqldump
--socket=/tmp/SpecialMySQL.sock
alias specialmysqladmin
/Applications/Special/SpecialMySQL/bin/mysqladmin
--socket=/tmp/SpecialMySQL.sock
alias specialmysql /Applications/Special/SpecialMySQL/bin/mysql
--socket=/tmp/SpecialMySQL.sock

I now get the list of databases for the Special installation when
using specialmysql as a command.

And if I use with parameters or redirect to a file it also works:

specialmysqldump --opt special_site_1 /temp.mysql

And this actually added a database called special:

root% specialmysqladmin create special

Hurray!

Hmmm.. The NuSphere people may not be saying very much on

being said!

The reference to MySQL AB was not there when I started this
discussion of missing links to the .com site 6 hours
ago, and judging from the HTTP header and the timestamp
of your mail, you hit their site just 10-15 minutes after
their last update of the front page.

I, for one, am happy to see that this sort of discussion
*does* lead to changes being made.

I must say that I am very impressed with the level of
the discussion in this thread. Though many feel an emotional
attachment to the One and only MySQL, people such as Justin
and Jeremy have helped keeping everybodys heads up above
the murky waters of flames and sticking very close to the
facts, trying to unravel what's going on - very unlike e.g.
the discussions taking place on /.

Kudos also to the MySQL team for following up very fast

and the NuSphere people, leaving no-one to try and guess the
facts.

JN Joel Nelson

A lot has been said during this discussion. You covered the points I
think are most important.

I've learned a lot. I did not, for example,
know (or remember, most likely) that Paul DuBois is employed by
NuSphere. This isn't terribly relevant to the issues involved, but it
does underscore the point that this is a pretty mixed-up business. I
own Paul's book and will purchase the next one. I appreciate
NuSphere's support of such a useful addition to the body of
documentation available.

However, that said, the only way NuSphere will come out of this
situation unsullied is by deciding to do the right thing. The right
thing, in this case, has nothing to do with what lawyers decide they
can get away with. I always worry about any entity, whether
individual or collective, that constantly expresses expectations or
intentions using phrases including the terms rights, legal, etc.
This is generally a red flag indicating every intent to take the
unethical, immoral, or amoral, course.

This isn't all that difficult an issue to reconcile, in my opinion.
One post described a lot of the messages dealing with this issue
(including my initial message, I suspect) as knee-jerk. Generally,
in issues involving morality and ethics, a knee-jerk reaction is the
one most likely to produce the correct answer. We often instinctively
know whether something feels right or not. It's only after the
justifications and rationalizations have messed with our minds that we
begin to have difficulty knowing what the right thing is.

In this issue, MySQL clearly belongs to MySQL AB, and so do the
domains in question. I've looked at the .org site. With that in mind:

NuSphere, please don't insult my intelligence by maintaining the
pretense that the site is purely benevolent in intent. This reminds me
of something that passes through my mind frequently when I hear
politicians speak: Either this guy is stupid, or he thinks I am.
Either way, I won't waste my time listening to him. Benevolence, good
intentions, a legitimate and sincere desire to contribute to the
success of MySQL are easily proven: Just turn over the domain name.
It's incredibly simple to right the wrong here, unless, again, you
allow yourself to rationalize and justify your actions, to convince
yourself that shrewdness is an acceptable substitute for
rightness. Sometimes, a shrewd course of action results in
financial profit (albeit at the expense of conscience). In this case,
everyone will lose, I predict, unless the right thing is done,
especially NuSphere, judging from the knee-jerk comments, which is
as it should be.

If you really have an insatiable desire impress the MySQL community
with your benevolence, perhaps MySQL AB would be happy to let you use
mysqlmongers.org or another name that more clearly and ethically
conveys your intent.

Replication Drama

Hi there

I have a triangular replication setup, works like a dream

In my haste I went and created a table in Site A's database, and then
dialled into Site B and created the table. As yet I haven't done a slave
start to start the replication process because I caught onto my vital
mistake. i.e. The replication will now complain that Site B already contains
a table called some_tablename. So, my question is, what do I do about this?
Is there a way of getting it to skip the create or can I delete one of
them but if I delete it, Site C will complain that the table does not
exist, Site A won't update because the table exists and the Add table was
the first command, etc etc etc, turns into a vicious loop.

Is there a way I can recover from this?

 Hello

When I store some data in a table of type Heap, this data will be lost
when the server is shutdown (and later restarted), won't it?

Correct.

The clients won't use the option file in the data directory. They will
only use the shared option file /etc/my.cnf, and the .my.cnf in your home
directory. You might be better off creating aliases that specify the
options on the command line.

Thank you Paul with your help so far.
So what I am left with is that I will need to create a startup file
to map the command you type in to the actual command with the
-socket specified?

Hey, maybe I answered part of my own question (thanks to the book
Essential System Administration from O'Reilly). There is a file on
Mac OS X at:
/usr/share/init/tcsh/rc that starts with the following:

##
# TCSH Expanded C-Shell INITIALIZATION FILE
#
# Wilfredo Sanchez Jr. | [EMAIL PROTECTED]
# July 09, 1992
#
# MIT Project Athena
#
# ORIGINAL SOURCES: /usr/athena/lib/init/cshrc (ATHENA REL 7.3P)
##

Adding the following and restarting the telnet session seems to work:

alias specialmysqldump
/Applications/Special/SpecialMySQL/bin/mysqldump
--socket=/tmp/SpecialMySQL.sock
alias specialmysqladmin
/Applications/Special/SpecialMySQL/bin/mysqladmin
--socket=/tmp/SpecialMySQL.sock
alias specialmysql /Applications/Special/SpecialMySQL/bin/mysql
--socket=/tmp/SpecialMySQL.sock

I now get the list of databases for the Special installation when
using specialmysql as a command.

And if I use with parameters or redirect to a file it also works:

specialmysqldump --opt special_site_1 /temp.mysql

And this actually added a database called special:

root% specialmysqladmin create special

Hurray!

Sounds like that should do it. (O'Reilly also has a book Using csh tcsh
specifically on the shell that you're using that has a chapter on startup
files and another on aliases. It's written by, er ... never mind.)

Well, what a mess. It is regretable that this legal issue
needs to be aired so publically that was certainly not my
preference. I also will not get into a flame war, it is
not in the best interest of mysql. I appreciate all the
email I've received with advice and/or support - thanks.

It is important that everyone realize that there is a legal
agreement that both Monty and David personally signed that
provides NuSphere broad rights around the use of the MySQL
name. That agreement also allows NuSphere to release MySQL
under the GPL license forever and print and distribute the
manual. We paid significant money to Monty and David in
exchange for that agreement which was central to forming
 NuSphere. This is public record.

NuSphere has created a public image problem for itself, and
seems to be oblivious to it. I haven't seen the agreement
between NuSphere and MySQL AB. I assume that it was signed
by both parties in good faith. I assume that each party is
astonished at the other party's interpretation of their
agreement.

The contract was signed, if I recall correctly, in Bedford
MA, so the laws of the state of MA will apply. I don't
know anything about business law in MA, but I know that
American common law uses the principle that a contract is
not binding unless both parties provide something of value.
I know what NuSphere was supposed to privide under the contract:
$2.5 million. What MySQL AB was supposed to privide in return
has never been explained. I know that in reality NuSphere
paid ~$350,000. I have no idea what it received in return,
if anything.

However, MySQL AB has made the following claims about the
agreement, and NuSphere hasn't denied the claims:

1) It was an interim agreement.

An interim agreement that gave one party rights to another
party's trademark even after the two parties failed to
negotiate a permanent agreement would be somewhat unusual.

2) The agreement called for NuSphere to pay MySQL AB $2.5
million.

Only slightly over 10% of the money was paid.
Normally, one party cannot enforce the terms of a contract
if they themselves have failed to fulfill its terms.

3) MySQL AB has informed NuSphere that the agreement is
terminated.

NuSphere has not explained why it believes the contract is
still in force.

Please consider these facts when you try to understand
NuSphere's rights and motivations - we actually worked hard
to get the details in writing before we even started the
company and we paid real money. It is under this agreement
that we believe we have a clear right to use mysql.org.

See above. This right isn't clear to anyone except NuSphere.
MySQL AB's right to the trademark is clear to everyone.

Now it appears there is a need by MySQL AB to characterize
that agreement as no longer in effect - I hope you can respect
the fact that NuSphere believes it is fully in effect and we
wish to continue to abide by it. This is the central issue
and public debate will not resolve it.

No, but NuSphere's public statements influence our perception
of the matter. NuSphere has not explained why an interim
contract whose terms NuSphere didn't fulfill is still in force.
(The last sentence describes the perception NuSphere has created.
I have no idea if it describes the reality.)

As far as mysql.org goes, what NuSphere would like to see is a
non-profit organization running that site - we have been consistent
in this desire for over a year, but it has been opposed by Monty
and David. I discussed this with Monty as recently as a few weeks
ago in June and July and as always he was not interested - I
appreciate he is entitled to that opinion as I am entitled to
believe that it is time to take this step in the MySQL community.
I invite all those who are skeptical to join mysql.org and be part
 of its formation.

I think mysql.org is dead in the water unless you can persuade
developers that you have a right to the name and the site serves
some useful purpose. Under present circumstances, mysql.org is
doing NuSphere more harm than good.

[BTW, the first community action was to get rid of the registration
requirement at the site - it is no longer required for downloading
files rather it is a membership registration only now.]

As far as NuSphere's contribution to MySQL, it is disappointing to
see our efforts discounted so quickly. At a minimum there are
specific bug fixes, features, and language statements focused
around transaction support in the server that are in MySQL due
to NuSphere's efforts in cooperation with Monty. The Gemini table
handler itself is already part of MySQL and is licensed under the
GPL - go find ha_gemini.cc and you will see it we checked it in long
ago in V4 and again in 3.23 when V4 was late. The Gemini component itself

RE: Client Command Line interface auto compellation 3.23.39

2001-07-15 Thread Noel Clarkson

Yep, some things work others don't.

if I type shtab then I get 'show '

seltab give 'select '

but I thought I was able to type
select * from tbltab
and that this used to give me all a list of all the table names that
started with tbl (or if there was only one it would just auto complete it
of course). Now I just get the mysql commands and none of the nice
tablename and fieldname completion that I'm sure used to be there (or was I
just wishfully dreaming??).

Here's the full list of what I get if I just press tab without entering
anything:
? ego notee show fields from
alter table exit pager show keys from
clear explain print show tables
connect goquit source
create database help rehashstatus
create table insertreplace tee
deleteload data fromselectunlock tables
drop lock tables set optionupdate
edit nopager show databasesuse

interestingly, if I type shtab I get 'show ' but if I type show tatab I
don't get 'show tables' which is what I would expect.

If there is anything else that I can provide to help sort this out I'd be
only too happy to.

cheers,

noel

Re: beowulfen and mysql

2001-07-15 Thread Gary Huntress

First, lets make sure we're all talking about the same thing. A general
definition of data mining would be the automated extraction of predictive
information from large databases. Automated implies some sort of agent,
and by its very nature the predictions are statistical (hence the large data
sets). Most agents that I have seen could be classified as decision tree,
neural network, or genetic algorithm.

Note that data mining is not considered to be data warehousing, ad hoc
querying, OLTP or visualization.

Are you trying to build some sort of predictive model? Perhaps you can
describe it a bit further. In general, once you pick an algorithm or
approach you would have to build an application layer above your query
layer. I imagine you would do that in C, for speed.

You probably want to read about MySQL replication here
http://www.mysql.com/documentation/mysql/bychapter/manual_Replication.html#R
eplication

Now, regarding Beowulf clusters. They are defined as (by the people that
created it, Donald Becker and company) solely a computational cluster and
not something geared toward data mining. You certainly can learn some
great lessons from their architecture (channel bonded ethernet or myrinet)
but don't expect them to answer any questions in the database arena!

 Howdy.

My company needs to implement a data mining setup. I am
building a cluster using dual athlons and perhaps firewire instead of
 100baseTX.

I need to find out as much as I can from those who have done
mysql on beowulfen. Please contact me at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Running multiple MySQL servers on one machine

2001-07-15 Thread William Chi

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has any opinions on the advantages and
disadvantages of running multiple servers on one machine.
Each server would be used to access different databases.

Note also that these databases will both be replicated and there shall be
multiple machines. Possibly some machines would be replicate one database
but not the other.

would it be more desirable given these circumstances to run multiple
servers on the master, to facilitate the synchronisation of the two databases?

thanks in advance,
William

Thanks for your replies
but my problem is still there
this is the php code iam using for connecting to Database:

 $ss_conn  = mysql_connect($db_host,$db_usr,$db_pwd);

and hosting infos are:
Red hat linux
mysql-3.23

From the error message, I'd guess you are using RedHat distribution. If
 not, ignore this.

You must make sure that the directory /var/lib/mysql is owned by mysql and
not root, so that mysql can write to it.

Also see all the added comments in the relevant subsections of the online
manual (link is added to all posts at the end). They are constantly being

RE: Client Command Line interface auto compellation 3.23.39

2001-07-15 Thread Paul DuBois

Yep, some things work others don't.

if I type shtab then I get 'show '

seltab give 'select '

but I thought I was able to type
select * from tbltab
and that this used to give me all a list of all the table names that
started with tbl (or if there was only one it would just auto complete it
of course). Now I just get the mysql commands and none of the nice
tablename and fieldname completion that I'm sure used to be there (or was I
just wishfully dreaming??).

Here's the full list of what I get if I just press tab without entering
anything:
? ego notee show fields from
alter table exit pager show keys from
clear explain print show tables
connect goquit source
create database help rehashstatus
create table insertreplace tee
deleteload data fromselectunlock tables
drop lock tables set optionupdate
edit nopager show databasesuse

interestingly, if I type shtab I get 'show ' but if I type show tatab I
don't get 'show tables' which is what I would expect.

Does show tables actually produce a list of tables, or no tables?
On some systems, there is a bug in glibc that prevents it from working
properly, in which case auto-completion won't work. (I have one such
system, and I see the same behavior you do, even if I type rehash
to force re-hashing of the names.)

Re: Problems installing under solaris 2.5.1

2001-07-15 Thread Alan W. Rateliff, II

On 16-Jul-01, Colin Faber said something totally profound about Re: Problems
installing under solaris 2.5.1 that made me ponder...

CF You need to make sure that the gcc on your box is build on that box,
CF Using a package won't do it, most of them where compiled on greater or
CF lesser hardware versions than you might be running, This in turn causes
CF the compiler it self to think that its running in cross-compile mode
CF and mysql won't allow a cross compile(er) build.

I've been using gcc packages from SunFreeware.com for the last couple of
years. I've not run into this problem yet. I have also always kept my
version of gcc recent, and have had no problems compiling, installing, or
running MySQL binaries created by gcc v3.0.

However, this question (installation problems on Solaris with the cross
compile error message) has been asked and answered on this list NUMEROUS times. To
quote every message on this list:

Before posting, please check:
   http://www.mysql.com/manual.php (the manual)
   http://lists.mysql.com/ (the list archive)

CF checking for bison... no
CF checking for byacc... no
CF checking for pdftex... no
CF checking return type of sprintf... configure: error: can not run test
CF program while cross compiling

You don't have bison, which is recommended, although off the top of my head I
can't remember where I read that.

I've been using the instructions detailed on my page below for quite some time
now, without incident. The source of the page details from where I compiled the
information. Please keep in mind that that is a bare minimum install, and you may
have other options you wish to use.

 http://users.talstar.com/forager/MySQL-HOWTO.html

This has worked for SPARC Solaris 2.4, 2.5.1, 2.6, and 7, as well as Intel
Solaris 7 and 8.

Good luck.

Re: I am facing this error [ Urgent ]

2001-07-15 Thread Rolf Hopkins

This is a very common problem. It is documented in the manual and also in
other places as Edna has already mentioned. Your php code has nothing to do
with the cause of the problem.

Basics:

1. Your server isn't running
2. Your paths to the socket file are incorrect. (Check php and mysql
settings)
3. Permissions are incorrect.

Version 3.22.32 Source to upgrade??

2001-07-15 Thread R Talbot

I am spending considerable time working with
   MySQL...DB2...Sybase..PostgreSQL
I am deciding on Project development tools..
Each RDBMS has some short coming for me..
Addressing MySQL which I like very much..
I use v. 3.22.32 because there is not a binary RPM
for Caldera 2.3 and 2.4 edesktop. I also installed to
OS/2 and Winnt.

As I had to compile my install and can't determine if
I can upgrade for Caldera Install. I can only locate
source for 3.23.39 or 3.22.32 and I am not sure if
3.23.39 will compile properly on my 2.2.10 kernal.
Where is the source hidden for 3.22.33 thru 3.23.38??
?? Question: What version do you suggest in my situation..?

??Questions: with 3.22.32...
   Work around suggestions for
1 Searching on two keys ( In Tutorial) as 3.22.32 can not
  create temporary tables..
2 Select * from table to Output
I understand this will not work with 3.22.32
   ?? Comments suggestions
Temp tables can be a valuable tool..
Would you create new permanant tables temporarily and
then drop them.

What features do you believe sorely lacking in 3.22.32 which
would force an upgrade.. Including perhaps Application Interface
changes to perl or java..

Thank you for you time..

Meet MySQL Users Developers at OSCON in San Diego...

2001-07-15 Thread Jeremy Zawodny

Are you coming to the Open Source Convention next week in San Diego,
California? Would you like to meet fellow MySQL users and some of the
MySQL developers?

If so, plan to be in the room Harbor Island II (East) between 8pm
and 10pm on Wednesday the 25th of July. There will be a BOF (Birds of
a Feather session) during which we can meet and talk about MySQL. The
description posted on the O'Reilly conference Web site reads:

Come and meet some of the MySQL developers as well as new and
experienced users. Ask questions. Answer questions. Learn what folks
are doing with MySQL. Find out where MySQL is headed in the coming
  months.

Last year's MySQL BOF went very well. A lot of folks got questions
answered and had the chance to put faces with some of the names they'd
seen on the mailing lists and in the code.

Details of all the BOF sessions, in case you decide not to join us,
are listed here:

  http://conferences.oreillynet.com/cs/os2001/pub/10/bofs.html

Hope to see some of you in San Diego!

Jeremy

Re: Where to find help??

Where is a good place to find help with some basic sql? I am having a
problem getting the query results I need. Don't tell me to consult the
manual because that is the first place I turned to. I just need a real life
example of the solution to see be able to pick it apart. I posted the
request to this list (see Two table query help...) and only got one off-list
reply that didn't help. Is there a better place to get such assistance or a
better way of requesting it here???

Jeff:

The way it works is thusly:

Send an example of the query you're having trouble with. Indicate whether the
query is executed in a PHP, c, or perl application.

Send the result of the query, or error messages if they exist.

Ex.:
The query:
$rs2=mysql_query(
select count(*) from dlg where hid='$UId' and
(dlgdate = DATE_SUB(now(), INTERVAL 31 DAY)
and (dlgdate = '$DlgNow'
and
dialog like '%$rowexpl[expletive]%')));

PHP application.

Result in this example is successful. No errors.

Start from there. You could also get Paul Dubois excellent book: ISBN
0-7357-0921-1.

Best Regards,
Van
