[newbie] X crash
While copying a file from my dos partition KDE locked up so tightly that I had to do a hard reset to regain control. Many many fixes were applied to my file system during the reboot. When X started it brought me up to a KDE sign-on applet instead of the normal Mandrake one. There were no options and no way to shutdown. I enter KDE just fine but when I click on X to shutdown I end up back at the KDE sign-on applet and the only thing I can do is sign back on. To shutdown I do a ctl-alt-f1 and shutdown from there. Can anyone help me fix whatever got destroyed? Alan
Re: [newbie] BZ2 FILE?
bz2 files are bzipped archives. bz2 is often used as it has a very good compression ratio. Normally mandrake 6 has bzip2 installed. just try to type bzip2 at a command line and it should pop up with an error message saying it can't output to a terminal. If it doesn't, have a look at the cdrom in the /mandrake/rpms directory. you should find it there and install it using kpackage for example. If you can't find it on the cd, have a look at www.linuxberg.com, it's tucows for linux ;o) - Original Message - From: Lei Tie To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, June 20, 1999 9:08 AM Subject: [newbie] BZ2 FILE? Re: [newbie] A problem with Kpakager (licq)
hi, I had the same problem with Licq. after you install go to the console and execute Licq, it will ask you for your username and your user ID number and password, if you don't have them or you don't know All that information Licq won't work because it cannot set up an account for you, if you want to find where your files went after they install in Kpackager just click on file at the top of the RPM window and than choose "open recent." it will have a list of installed files just click on the one you installed and choose the file list tab in the lower right window. Re: [newbie] modem configuration
Hy Lei Tie, When I had the same problem, I found out I had set the modem to the wrong serial port. If you want to follow the PPP HOWTO, you need scripts, ppp-on, ppp-off, and ppp-on-dialer, that are in /usr/docs/ppp-2.3.7/scripts. I moved them to /etc/ppp and filled out ppp-on with info pertaining to my situation. Also, fill out pap-secrets, also in /etc/ppp. Eventually, I will get around to using the kppp dialer, but right now I am too lazy. adios, Steve W --- Lei Tie [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: How do i configure ppp in console using ppp HOW-TO? On Sun, 20 Jun 1999, Cesar translated thoughts to electrons: Where is that "select individual packages" thing on the installation?? What options do I need to select so I can choose what packages I want?? Thanks. Cesar O. Well, i don't know if this still applies to Venus, but in Festen you have to select "custom" instead of workstation or server. Then, after partitioning and formatting, the installer asks what kinds of packages it should install, and there is an option for "select individual packages" (more or less, I re-installed my Festen a couple of weeks ago and I dont remember exactly, but its more or less this way, compadre) -- ___ Jose Alberto Abreu Executive Editor Plan B Mystical Enterprises ___ "Do or do not... fuckup you can if you try..." -attributed to Jedi Master Yoda =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Get Your Own Free Pop or Web Based Email and a 10MB Web Site for FREE at: http://www.nettaxi.com! =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

[newbie] Need Help on Klicq
Finally i got my klicq to work. Like some of you said that it should ask me for my password and uin and alias the first time i type Licq in console. Well it just poped up the window and didn't ask for anything. So i had to type "licq -b config." And then it asked all those thing as if it were my first time of starting that program. So from that time, everytime if i just typed licq it would not open my account in licq. So now i am forced to type "licq -b config." It is a bit annoying and abnormal. Did any of you have this problem before? How do I work around this? Thank you.

He is used to work with VC++, C++Builder, Visual Basic and therefore he is looking for a environment with a compiler, a debugger etc. (everything integrated) with a good GUI. I received some messages and in one of them there was an advice: "Take a look at Kdevelop ( http://samuel.cs.uni-potsdam.de/~smeier/kdevelop_new/)". Well, we went there and became very impressed with the snapshots and with the texts explaining all the capabilities of the program. We downloaded the 0.4 version and the programs that are needed to have kdevelop running. Here our problems started. First, we couldn't compile any of these programs and any of them are provided in rpm except kdevelop. [newbie] Treating Devices as Files
My earlier post asked about how much the /dev directory files were like regular files. Specifically, I talked about checking a CD that had been burned with the ISO image using the md5sum file provided on the mirrors. It doesn't work. I don't know what a .iso file is, exactly, that is, if it's a file system that can be burned onto the CD bit for bit, and maybe even mounted under Linux (I never thought to try this while I had the ISO image, and it's gone now for space reasons). My experiment involved two tests: md5sum --check=md5sum (the filename in the input file was changed to /dev/cdrom instead of mandrake60-1.iso) md5sum /dev/cdrom md5sum.out Neither of which worked. Unfortunately, I don't have the error message with me now. If anybody's interested, I can post it Monday when I get back to my computer (this is being written on a different computer). Ah, well. It was a neat idea- or so I thought. -Matt Stegman [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: [newbie] Major problems with X under Cyrix P150+...
Maybe your problem is simply not having X configured right? Before blaming the CPU or something else, first I'd try Xconfigurator and using the lowest monitor setting, and setting the resolution to 640x480 and color depth to 256 colors. If X doesn't work with those settings then I guess you do have some other problem I wouldn't know how to help you with (incompatible video card maybe?). And you should of course make sure that Cyrix isn't overclocked which seems to be what causes problems for other people.. If X DOES work at 640x480 and 256 colors then I would try different resolutions/color depths until finding the best one that works. Please help, I've been trying to install and configure Venus now for well over a week. I'm sure that I have set all my hardware up correctly during install, but there seems to be a major problem, and it sounds as though others (with Cyrix chips) have encountered it. [SNIP] I only have Venus on my machine, and I know everything is set up correctly (hardware wise). Is there a problem with Venus under Cyrix chips (P150+'s)?? etc. I have had the advice to downgrade to 5.3 as it is more stable But, is there a quicker answer? I do no if its the Cyrix cause mine works fine with 5.3 Festen. I am running a S3 Virge Video card however. Maybe its a problem unique to 2.2 Kernal I am running 2.0.36 on my Cyrix Jeanette
Re: [newbie] Question LICQ
search for a file called owner.uin and open it and modify it with your info Jeremy Mann wrote: -- From: root Sent: Sunday, June 20, 1999 7:03 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject:[newbie] Question LICQ Hi, I got licq to run but didnt add my ident number.. As I said before, my IBM/Cyrix 150+ worked fine under Fensten and sucks under Venus. Except for the sound issue, Venus works perfect on my desktop and laptop.. - Original Message - From: Jeanette Russo [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, June 20, 1999 10:12 PM Subject: Re: [newbie] Major problems with X under Cyrix P150+... Re: [newbie] Major problems with X under Cyrix P150+...
Andy, I found my biggest problem( I have a Cyrix PR200+) was not being able to install at all. I overcame this by downloading a new 'boot.img' file from updates,6.0.,images(I think) transferring to a floppy and using that as my boot disk. Installation then went with no problems. Before I had tried to load about a dozen times and it just 'bombed out'. After that I downloaded the latest kernel from the same source together with the initscripts and installed them with 'rpm -Uvh It's not perfect but I can now use it. Good luck and write me if I can help some more. I'm sure that I have set all my hardware up correctly during install, but there seems to be a major problem, and it sounds as though others (with Cyrix chips) have encountered it. Basically, now I'm forced at the end of installation to NOT boot into X, or else my computer just stalls and I'm forced to use CTRL+ALT+F2.F(whatever..) then unmount and reboot. Now though, if I don't boot into X and start with the command prompt and "startx" my machine just gives up on me and I'm left with CTRL+ALT+F2.F(whatever..) again. The screen it 'dies' on is the black and white hatch with the (mouse) cross in the middle!! That's the limit to my X on 99.99% of logins?!?!?!? It's getting annoying and frustrating...! I've installed Venus about 13 times now - I think I'm becoming a bit of an expert!! I only have Venus on my machine, and I know everything is set up correctly (hardware wise). [newbie] Fwd: KDE and 640x480
Mhmmm... Nope, I havent tried that, mainly because I have a _very_ old monitor that can hardly make 640x480... I'll get myself another one when I save enough bucks, though... -- Forwarded Message -- Subject: KDE and 640x480 Date: Sun, 20 Jun 1999 20:55:44 -0400 From: "Doug McGarrett" [EMAIL PROTECTED] I can't post to the list, for some reason, but I thought I would pass on the following: I had a Seiko monitor a few years ago, only 14" but very sharp, with a Trinitron. It would not do 800x600, but it _would_ do 1024x768. Have you tried that? Good luck. --doug -- ___ Jose Alberto Abreu Executive Editor Plan B Mystical Enterprises ___ "Do or do not... fuckup you can if you try..." -attributed to Jedi Master Yoda =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Get Your Own Free Pop or Web Based Email and a 10MB Web Site for FREE at: http://www.nettaxi.com! =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
