I have not had the chance to use licq yet, but I believe that I read that
you need to run dbupdate before you first run licq (just type 'dbupdate' at
the command prompt).

[newbie] X crash

1999-06-20 Thread Alan Shoemaker

While copying a file from my dos partition KDE locked up so tightly that I
had to do a hard reset to regain control. Many many fixes were applied to
my file system during the reboot. When X started it brought me up to a KDE
sign-on applet instead of the normal Mandrake one. There were no options
and no way to shutdown. I enter KDE just fine but when I click on X to
shutdown I end up back at the KDE sign-on applet and the only thing I can do
is sign back on. To shutdown I do a ctl-alt-f1 and shutdown from there.
Can anyone help me fix whatever got destroyed?

Re: [newbie] BZ2 FILE?

bz2 files are bzipped archives. bz2 is often used
as it has a very good compression ratio. Normally mandrake 6 has bzip2
installed. just try to type bzip2 at a command line and it should pop up with an
error message saying it can't output to a terminal. If it doesn't, have a look
at the cdrom in the /mandrake/rpms directory. you should find it there and
install it using kpackage for example. If you can't find it on the cd, have a
look at www.linuxberg.com, it's tucows
for linux ;o)

hi, I had the same problem with Licq. after you install go to the console
and execute Licq, it will ask you for your username and your user ID number
and password, if you don't have them or you don't know All that information
Licq won't work because it cannot set up an account for you,
if you want to find where your files went after they install in Kpackager
just click on file at the top of the RPM window and than choose "open
recent." it will have a list of installed files just click on the one you
installed and choose the file list tab in the lower right window.

I hope this helps you guys, my sentence structure kinda' sucks!! :o)

 Hi-

Maybe one of you who are more experienced with linux can help me. I'm
having trouble making a connection with kppp--Immediately after making a
connection, my modem hangs up. I get to the point where kppp tells me it
is logging on, and -boom- hang up. However, I *am* able to make a
connection through the PPP config in linuxconf (although I cannot get that
connection to disconnect...one problem at a time, eh, unless someone has a
suggestion for that one?). I do have kppp setuid and there is no
difference when I run it as root.

In case it will help, I've attached the log below.

Re: [newbie] modem configuration

Hy Lei Tie,
When I had the same problem, I found out I had set the modem to the
wrong serial port. If you want to follow the PPP HOWTO, you need
scripts, ppp-on, ppp-off, and ppp-on-dialer, that are in
/usr/docs/ppp-2.3.7/scripts. I moved them to /etc/ppp and filled out
ppp-on with info pertaining to my situation. Also, fill out
pap-secrets, also in /etc/ppp. Eventually, I will get around to using
the kppp dialer, but right now I am too lazy.
adios, Steve W

Well, i don't know if this still applies to Venus, but in Festen you have to
select "custom" instead of workstation or server.
Then, after partitioning and formatting, the installer asks what kinds of
packages it should install, and there is an option for "select individual
packages"

(more or less, I re-installed my Festen a couple of weeks ago and I dont
remember exactly, but its more or less this way, compadre)

By the way, I sometimes get that affect very mildly when my
refrigerator is powered up. It is about 20 feet from my computer.

Q'onda Compadre...
The Fridge and the monitor both generate static electricity... if you dont like
this side effect (usually only happens when the Fridge starts, and then it
slowly fades), get one of those monitor screens (designed to protect you eyes)
that also have like a small cable with a pin.
Attach this pin to something fairly large and metal (like your computers outer
casing) and the static electricity will dissipate safely and easily.

I have one more question: I was messing around with the desktop and I
pushed some icon and GNOME icons overlaid the KDE icons on my desktop.
GNOME did not replace KDE but rather is sitting there with KDE. Along
the top task bar are buttons labled "gnc", "gnc2" hasta "gnc8"
Any suggestions how I can remedy this?

Sorry... cant help you here. : (

[newbie] Need Help on Klicq

1999-06-20 Thread root

Finally i got my klicq to work. Like some of you said that it should
ask me for my password and uin and alias the first time i type Licq in
console. Well it just poped up the window and didn't ask for anything.
So i had to type "licq -b config." And then it asked all those thing as
if it were my first time of starting that program. So from that time,
everytime if i just typed licq it would not open my account in licq. So
now i am forced to type "licq -b config." It is a bit annoying and
abnormal. Did any of you have this problem before? How do I work
around this? Thank you.

[newbie] Major problems with X under Cyrix P150+...

1999-06-20 Thread Anonymous

Please help,

I've been trying to install and configure Venus now for well over a week.
I'm sure that I have set all my hardware up correctly during install, but
there seems to be a major problem, and it sounds as though others (with
Cyrix chips) have encountered it.

Basically, now I'm forced at the end of installation to NOT boot into X, or
else my computer just stalls and I'm forced to use
CTRL+ALT+F2.F(whatever..) then unmount and reboot.

Now though, if I don't boot into X and start with the command prompt and
"startx" my machine just gives up on me and I'm left with
CTRL+ALT+F2.F(whatever..) again. The screen it 'dies' on is the black
and white hatch with the (mouse) cross in the middle!! That's the limit to
my X on 99.99% of logins?!?!?!? It's getting annoying and frustrating...!
I've installed Venus about 13 times now - I think I'm becoming a bit of an
expert!!

I only have Venus on my machine, and I know everything is set up correctly
(hardware wise). Is there a problem with Venus under Cyrix chips (P150+'s)??
etc. I have had the advice to downgrade to 5.3 as it is more stable
But, is there a quicker answer?

Thanks in advance,

[newbie] Development environment with a good GUI

1999-06-20 Thread Anonymous

A friend of mine is thinking about give up with windows and come to linux
but he has some doubts and I couldn't help him with them.
He became very impressed with the look of kde and with the resources of
mandrake in general. We decided to look for a good programing environment.
I showed him gcc and g++ and compiled some of my own programs but I am
afraid he was expecting something more. He is used to work with VC++,
C++Builder, Visual Basic and therefore he is looking for a environment with
a compiler, a debugger etc. (everything integrated) with a good GUI. I told
him that I didn't know anything like that but I could ask for something in
some mailing lists.
I received some messages and in one of them there was an advice: "Take a
look at Kdevelop ( http://samuel.cs.uni-potsdam.de/~smeier/kdevelop_new/)".
Well, we went there and became very impressed with the snapshots and with
the texts explaining all the capabilities of the program. We downloaded the
0.4 version and the programs that are needed to have kdevelop running. Here
our problems started. First, we couldn't compile any of these programs and
any of them are provided in rpm except kdevelop.
I am looking for someone who is working with kdevelop and could give us
some tips about having these programs compiled and working fine in Mandrake
6.0. If someone is working with any other development environment (with a
good GUI) and would like to point it as an alternative I would be grateful.

[newbie] Treating Devices as Files

1999-06-20 Thread Anonymous

My earlier post asked about how much the /dev directory files were like
regular files. Specifically, I talked about checking a CD that had been
burned with the ISO image using the md5sum file provided on the mirrors.
It doesn't work. I don't know what a .iso file is, exactly, that is, if
it's a file system that can be burned onto the CD bit for bit, and maybe
even mounted under Linux (I never thought to try this while I had the ISO
image, and it's gone now for space reasons).
My experiment involved two tests:
md5sum --check=md5sum (the filename in the input file was changed to
/dev/cdrom instead of mandrake60-1.iso)
md5sum /dev/cdrom md5sum.out
Neither of which worked. Unfortunately, I don't have the error message
with me now. If anybody's interested, I can post it Monday when I get
back to my computer (this is being written on a different computer).
Ah, well. It was a neat idea- or so I thought.

First of all don't reboot your machine. Probably there is a problem with your
configuration files (XF86Config). And it can be solved. There is a way to enter
the command line even if you have set your machine to start x automatically. If
you are using lilo to boot you can pass some commands to the machine at lilo
prompt. Do it:

LILO: linux init 3

It is gonna make your computer boot at the command line (console ; out of the
X). Now you can edit your XF86Config or use an application to do it. There are
two pretty good: XF86Setup or Xconfigurator. Type any of these two at the
console and try to fix your problems. I hope it can help you.

He became very impressed with the look of kde and with the resources of

I couldn't get Glimpse to compile either (and didn't try any of the others).
If I've had one big problem with M6, it's programs I download routinely failing
to compile.

I am looking for someone who is working with kdevelop and could give us
some tips about having these programs compiled and working fine in Mandrake
6.0. If someone is working with any other development environment (with a
good GUI) and would like to point it as an alternative I would be grateful.

 best regards,
 Rodrigo

There are a few IDE's available for download at Linuxberg (go to
www.linuxberg.com and pick a mirror). I'm not much of a programmer myself so I
don't know how they compare with each other, but I think Code Crusador is one
of the more popular IDE's.

Re: [newbie] Major problems with X under Cyrix P150+...

1999-06-20 Thread Anonymous

Maybe your problem is simply not having X configured right? Before blaming the
CPU or something else, first I'd try Xconfigurator and using the lowest monitor
setting, and setting the resolution to 640x480 and color depth to 256 colors.

If X doesn't work with those settings then I guess you do have some other
problem I wouldn't know how to help you with (incompatible video card maybe?).
And you should of course make sure that Cyrix isn't overclocked which seems to
be what causes problems for other people..

If X DOES work at 640x480 and 256 colors then I would try different
resolutions/color depths until finding the best one that works.

Rather than going thru the hassle of downloading, ( many hours!), go to
http://www.cheapbytes.com ,or linuxmall, and order the cdrom. $1.99 for the cd,
and $5.00 shipping, and you'll have it in 3-4 days. While you're there, get
several distros, at $1.99 each, and the whole shebang will come in one package
 for $5.00.
 Try 'em all!!

Agreed - and if you download, and the software won't work, how will you
know if it's a problem in the download , or ?? Cheapbytes gives very good
and quick service. I've bought from them: Slackware, RedHat, SuSE, and
Mandrake. No complaints.

You'll need to edit the licq.conf file with your UIN. Also double check uin.conf as
well.

Re: [newbie] Major problems with X under Cyrix P150+...

1999-06-20 Thread Anonymous

Andy,
I found my biggest problem( I have a Cyrix PR200+) was not being able to
install at all. I overcame this by downloading a new 'boot.img'
file from updates,6.0.,images(I think) transferring to a floppy and using
that as my boot disk. Installation then went with no problems. Before I had
tried to load about a dozen times and it just 'bombed out'.
After that I downloaded the latest kernel from the same source together with
the initscripts and installed them with 'rpm -Uvh It's not perfect
but I can now use it.
Good luck and write me if I can help some more.
Regards
Bob

I can't post to the list, for some reason, but I thought I would pass on the
following: I had a Seiko monitor a few years ago, only 14" but very
sharp, with a Trinitron. It would not do 800x600, but it _would_ do
1024x768. Have you tried that? Good luck. --doug
